In the inner Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary, most contaminated stations were in muddy, depositional areas of the estuary, particularly along the Welsh coast between the Rivers Taff and Usk, and also on the English coast between Avonmouth and Severn Beach. Some deeper areas, dominated by sand and mixed sediments, also showed contaminant concentrations in excess of those predicted from sediment texture, organic matter, and aluminium or iron concentrations.
Concentrations of lead, copper, chromium, nickel and zinc have decreased in the muddy sediments since the 1970s, but only lead has decreased in sand. With the exception of zinc, which is high in the Severn, trace element concentrations were comparable to those from other British estuaries.
Landward of the proposed barrage, contaminants are associated with the sub-estuaries and muddy areas at their confluence with the main estuary. Post-barrage effects on contaminants will be focused in these muddy areas. However, fine sediment deposition on what are now sandy areas would increase their contaminant burden unless calcium build-up from the resulting molluscan fauna has the antagonistic effect of contaminant dilution in the sediment.  相似文献

Summary The influence of heavy metal additions on availability and uptake of cadmium, lead, zinc, copper, manganese and iron by oat was studied. The experiments were carried out as pot experiments using sandy loam, sandy soil and organic soil. Selective extractants were used to remove metals held in different soil fractions.Lead and copper were preferently bound by organics and oxides, zinc by oxides and inorganics, and cadmium by inorganics and organics.Addition of cadmium to the soils resulted in higher cadmium concentrations in all plant parts but lower concentrations of lead, zinc, copper, manganese and iron, and the accumulation indexes of these metals were also lower when cadmium was added to the soil.Addition of cadmium plus lead, zinc and copper resulted in higher cadmium concentrations in leaves and straw of plants grown in sandy loam and sandy soil, but lower concentrations when plants were grown in organic soil as compared with the results when cadmium was added separately. The transfer of cadmium, lead, zinc and copper from soil to plant was greatest from sandy soil, and zinc and cadmium were more mobile in the plant than were lead and copper.Cadmium concentrations in leaves correlated significantly with CaCl2 and CH3COOH extractions in sandy loam and sandy soil and with CH3COOH extractions in organic soil.Generally, the total metal uptake was lowest from organic soil.  相似文献

本文在污染现场调查研究、试验研究和单一毒物接触试验的大量数据基础上,论述了木本植物对大气重金属污染物一一铅、镉、铜、锌的耐性。查明了大气重金属污染物引起叶片可见伤害症状需要很高的剂量。糖槭以2000ppm硝酸铅溶液浸泡涂抹枝叶,三天后出现轻度可见伤害症状,叶中铅积累量高达802ppm。旱柳以500ppm氯化镉溶液浸泡涂抹枝叶,叶中积累量达66ppm,十天内未出现可见症状。大气重金属污染物——铅、镉、铜、锌对叶片造成的急性伤害症状是相似的,而与土壤中相同污染物引起的急性伤害具有差别。木本植物对大气重金属污染物的耐性很强,在以大气重金属污染为主的复合污染现场,一些幼龄树木的叶片吸铅量达500—800ppm,超过背景浓度的120倍;吸镉量10—18ppm,超过背景浓度的139倍,吸铜量100—239ppm,超过背景浓度的5—12倍,吸锌量500—700ppm,超过背景浓度的9—20倍只出现较轻的受害症状。在相对清洁区,对幼树叶片进行单一毒物接触试验,一些主要绿化树木的叶片吸铅量达200—600ppm,吸镉量20—60ppm并不出现可见症状。木本植物对大气重金属污染物具有较强的耐性,因而为生物防治大气重金属污染开辟了广阔的前景。  相似文献

The in vitro effects of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc, and various cadmium compounds (chloride, sulphate and nitrate) on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) lymphocyte viability and phagocyte activity, were evaluated. The percentage of dead lymphocytes was determined after Trypan blue staining, and phagocyte activity was measured by using the nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test. Lead was the most toxic to lymphocytes--the maximum mortality exceeded 30%, and was significantly higher at 1 microM of lead, compared to the control. The maximum mortality caused by cadmium was below 10%, but was significantly elevated with 5 microM or more of cadmium. Zinc induced lymphocyte mortality from 10 microM, whilst no effect was observed with copper. The incubation of full blood with the three cadmium compounds (at 5mg/l of cadmium) showed that cadmium nitrate and cadmium sulphate were more toxic (over 35% and 25% mortality, respectively) than cadmium chloride (about 15% mortality). This was confirmed by the results of tests on isolated cells--1mg/l of cadmium as nitrate and sulphate increased lymphocyte mortality compared to the control and cadmium chloride. Phagocytic activity was less sensitive to heavy metals than was lymphocyte viability. It was significantly reduced following exposure to 50 microM and 100 microM cadmium, and 100 microM zinc, but no effects were observed with either lead or copper.  相似文献

Monthly winter counts of seven major wildfowl species show that, since 1960, Bewick's swan, shelduck, wigeon, teal and pintail have significantly increased in both the Severn and Britain as a whole; European White-fronted geese have shown no trend on the Severn but have significantly declined in Britain; mallard show no trend on the Severn but have increased in Britain. All except shelduck show a correlation between the trends in Britain and the Severn Estuary, while all but mallard and pintail rank as internationally important on the Severn. In recent years the Severn has assumed a considerable importance for pochard and tufted ducks. The status of many species in the Severn Estuary is dependent on the management of key areas.  相似文献

Fine sediment forms tidal flats along most of the Severn Estuary coastline but subtidal deposits are localized, mainly confined to Newport Deep and Bridgwater Bay. The estuary is experiencing a period of sea level rise which has led to coastal mud erosion in recent centuries. Sediment exchanges with the sea and river inputs are negligible compared to the large-scale exchanges within the estuary itself. Measurements of tidal flat level changes, archaeological finds and anthropogenic chemical concentrations confirm that mud flat erosion is long term and typical of the entire estuary. Sea level rise and coast erosion would normally lead to much of this sediment being redeposited inshore at the landward limit of the alluvium. Other than in narrow salt marsh strips, such deposition is prevented in the Severn by the river walls. In cores of subtidal muddy sediment, the number and thickness of sand layers decreases upwards. The top metre or so is entirely mud and exhibits thousands of layers of varying thickness and origin. Radiochemical analysis confirms that mud is accumulating in the subtidal zone of Newport Deep and the seaward periphery of the Bridgwater Bay mud patch and is increasing in proportion to sand. Circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that for at least the last 600 years the dominant pattern has been one of erosion of fine sediment from the coastal margin and its accumulation in subtidal sinks.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Mit standardisierten Habicht-Mauserfedern läßt sich die Schwermetallbelastung von Landschaftsausschnitten repräsentativ erfassen, wie der Vergleich mit auf physikalisch-technischem Weg ermittelten Depositionsraten aus dem gleichen Untersuchungsgebiet bestätigt. Zwischen den Cadmium-, Blei- und Kupfergehalten in standardisierten Habicht-Mauserfedern und den gemessenen Depositionsraten dieser Elemente besteht eine signifikante Korrelation. Die einzelnen Handschwingen zeigten unterschiedlich hohe Cadmium-, Blei- und Kupfergehalte, abhängig von ihrer Stellung im Flügel. Auch Federfahnen wiesen eine charakteristische Cadmium- und Bleiverteilung auf. Die exogene Auflagerung von Schwermetallen aus der Atmosphäre auf/in die Federfahnen wird diskutiert.
Heavy metals in Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) feathers from differently polluted areas
Summary Standardized moulted feathers of Goshawks are used as biomonitors to indicate heavy metal pollution of areas. There is a strong correlation between the cadmium, lead and copper content of this feathers and the wet deposition rate, measured by wet deposition samplers. The distribution of lead, cadmium and copper in different primaries and in other feathers are shown. The exogenous deposition of this heavy metals from the atmosphere on/into the feather vanes are discussed.

The diet of juvenile and adult twaite shad was studied at a number of freshwater and estuarine sites in the rivers Severn and Wye and in the coastal waters of Cardigan Bay (West Wales). In the Severn estuary and in the freshwater reaches of the Severn and Wye, adult twaite shad consumed little during their pre-spawning migration. In the Severn Estuary post-spawning adults were present during the summer months where they fed actively on mysids, gammarids and shrimps. Mysids dominated the diet of the adults caught in coastal waters during the autumn. The diet of one year old twaite shad was studied in the Severn Estuary. In May the one year olds from the lower estuary consumed mainly gammarids. During the summer months, this age-class moved into the inner estuary where they fed predominantly on mysids.The larvae and juveniles (age 0+) fed mainly on chironomid larvae and pupae and Simuliidae larvae, while in fresh water. In the estuary copepods, cladocerans and mysids dominated the diet of the juveniles. There was some suggestion of an increase in prey size during their period of residency in the estuary. The contrasting distribution of the juveniles in two river systems is discussed in relation to the effects of channelization.  相似文献

Summary The patterns of radial distribution of copper, lead, zinc and cadmium in two species of poplar, growing under polluted conditions near a copper smelter, were investigated. Populus marilandica is very resistant to such pollution, but P. balsamifera is sensitive. Soils were examined for concentrations of these metals, and only a surface layer of soil was polluted with copper and lead. P. balsamifera absorbed much more cadmium than P. marilandica under the same conditions. P. marilandica shows a pattern of copper radial distribution with significantly increased concentration of the meral in the layers in the middle of the trunk compared to P. balsamifera. Zinc and cadmium have a pattern with increased metal concentration from the bark towards the pith of the tree. In the case of copper and lead the pattern indicates increased concentrations of these metals in the rings adjacent to the pith while the pattern in other parts of the tree remains unconfirmed due to poor precision. Metallic elements in hair were assessed in human subjects randomly sampled from six villages in Hubei province, PR China, known to differ in industrial pollution. Metallic elements assessed included copper, zinc, lead, and cadmium. Subjects sampled included adults and children of both sexes. Soil and rice samples from the villages were also examined for contents of metallic elements. Soil and rice contents of copper, lead, and cadmium were higher in the villages closer to the pollution source (copper smeltery). Hair contents of copper, lead, and cadmium were higher in subjects from the polluted villages compared with subjects from the nonpolluted areas. No differences were found in hair zinc content among the villagers. Cadmium contents in rice and human hair were linearly correlated. For lead and copper a logarithmic relation was found. No difference was found between the two genders with respect to hair metallic contents. With regard to age, hair cadmium content was highest in the older age groups in the polluted villages and may reflect chronic exposure. No other systematic age effects were observed. It was concluded that contents of cadmium, lead, and copper in human hair do reflect the degree of environmental pollution.  相似文献

Samples of the edible tissue of cephalopod molluscs (cuttlefish, squid, octopus) and crustaceans (lobster, shrimp) collected off the coast of Lebanon were found to concentrate similar levels of cadmium, copper, nickel, and chromium. Lead and zinc were highest in the cephalopods and iron was highest in the crustaceans.The molluscs collected from Beirut had higher levels of many metals than those taken from the other locations. The Beirut octopus had higher lead, cadmium, copper, iron, and chromium. Lead, cadmium, and copper were also highest in the Beirut cuttlefish while iron and zinc were elevated. The crustaceans from Beirut showed no strong tendency to concentrate higher metal levels, except for the Beirut lobster which had higher copper than the other samples.In the cuttlefish, the analysis of bone showed generally higher cadmium, zinc, nickel, and chromium but lower copper and iron than the muscle. However, at Beirut, the bone samples had much higher iron. Levels of most metals in the exoskeletons of the lobster and shrimp were quite similar to those in the muscle tissue with the exception of iron in the lobster which was highest in the exoskeleton, and zinc in both crustaceans, which was more highly concentrated in the muscle.  相似文献

Trace metals are components of releases to air emitted by copper and zinc production facilities in Canada. Six metals (copper, zinc, nickel, lead, cadmium, and arsenic) are examined as part of an overall environmental assessment of these releases. Estimates of metal deposition rates to soils and surface waters were derived from monitoring data in the vicinity of the production facilities and also through dispersion modelling studies. Fate and transport modelling of the metals deposited allowed an estimation of critical loads. Estimated annual deposition rates were compared with 25th-percentile critical loads typically representative of effects on sensitive organisms under 25% of conditions in sandy soils or circumneutral to acidic lake waters. The results of the comparison suggest that there is a potential for adverse effects on aquatic and/or soil-dwelling organisms from exposure to steadystate concentrations of metals in the vicinity of copper and zinc production facilities. Approaches of particular significance in these assessments include probabilistic estimation of critical loads for metals, allowance for the speciation of metals defining the bioavailable fraction and limiting critical effect levels to the high end of natural background metal concentrations.  相似文献

A comparative study of the sorption capacity of low-esterified pectin from the seagrass Zostera marina and drugs used for hemosorption and enterosorption was made. Low-esterified pectin was less efficient in binding in vitro lead, cadmium, and copper compared to chelating and thiol-containing compounds; but it was much more efficient than activated carbon, polyphepan, microcrystalline cellulose, and enterodez.  相似文献

Published information relating to changes in the chemical element content of avian eggs caused by embryonic development is extremely scarce, although it may be crucial for understanding both the presence of anthropogenic pollutants as well as physiological levels of micronutrients. We assessed the variation in concentrations of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and nine trace elements: seven essential (chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co) and zinc (Zn)) and two non‐essential (lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd)) in shells and contents (both egg yolk and egg white) of embryonated and non‐embryonated eggs. We investigated the eggs of the Eurasian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus, a large proportion of whose eggs are infertile in our study population (almost 43% of clutches contain unhatched eggs) as well as significant embryo‐induced eggshell thinning at the equator of embryonated eggs. We found significantly higher concentrations (≥ 22.7%) of all the focal elements in the contents of embryonated eggs in comparison with non‐embryonated eggs, and a very pronounced one for Ca (nearly twice as high). The shells of embryonated eggs contained significantly higher concentrations of Zn (104.1%), Fe (56.5%), Pb (32.8%) and Cu (28.0%) but significantly lower ones of Co (8.9%) and Ca (9.3%) than the shells of non‐embryonated eggs. The simultaneous higher concentrations of all elements in the content of thinner‐shelled embryonated eggs suggest the parallel transfer of these elements along with Ca resorption from the shell into the egg interior during embryo formation. The higher concentration of most elements in the thinner shells of embryonated eggs may be indicative of the maternal deposition of some of these elements in a shell layer not subject to embryonic depletion, or in the eggshell membrane. Our results highlight the need for the careful selection of egg samples, which should differentiate between embryonated and non‐embryonated eggs in the analytical treatment of eggs and eggshells.  相似文献

The Gulf of Paria is bordered by both Trinidad and Venezuela, from which various metallic pollutants and other contaminants can originate. The Gulf is still a significant source of fish, crabs and shellfish for human consumption to both countries, where concerns over the quality of this marine environment have been long expressed but never properly addressed. In addition, the circulatory current patterns in the Gulf ensure that contaminants originating from either country are likely to affect both countries eventually. Heavy metals were determined in oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae and C. virginica), green mussels (Perna viridis) and sediments from the Gulf of Paria. Samples were obtained at four sites in Trinidad and three sites in Venezuela in the Gulf of Paria, in addition to comparative samples collected from three sites on the north coast of Venezuela. Edible tissues of twelve shellfish from each location were blended and aliquots digested with concentrated nitric acid, for extraction of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc. The solutions were analysed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Mercury was extracted with a mixture of nitric, hydrochloric and sulphuric acids and determined by cold vapour atomic absorption. Sediments were oven-dried at 60'C, before being similarly extracted. Results showed that mercury in sediments at all sites in Trinidad and Venezuela exceeded NOAA and Canadian sediment quality guidelines, while cadmium, copper, nickel, lead and zinc also exceeded these guidelines at several sites. Heavy metal levels in oysters and green mussels varied widely with location. However, oysters from the Gulf of Paria contained significantly higher mean levels of cadmium, copper, nickel and zinc than those from the north coast of Venezuela, but this difference was not apparent in mussels. Cadmium, mercury and zinc in sediments were significantly correlated with those of mussels, but not of oysters, in which copper and zinc at several sites in the Gulf of Paria exceeded local maximum permissible levels (Cu = 20 microg g(-1) wet wt; Zn = 50 microg g(-1) wet wt) for human consumption. These findings indicate that while mussels may be better biological indicators of heavy metal pollution in sediments than oysters, the latter may provide copper and zinc contamination. Further research is needed to determine the most appropriate biological indicators of heavy metal and other pollutants in the local marine environment and to develop protocols for their use.  相似文献

采用等温吸附法,研究了重金属铜、铅、镉、镍在膨润土中的吸附特征,发现膨润土对铜、铅的吸附明显强于镉、镍,吸附强度大小顺序为Pb2 >Cu2 >Ni2 >Cd2 。Langmuir和Freundlich方程对这4种金属离子等温吸附的拟合均呈极显著关系。Pb2 、Cd2 、Ni2 分别与Cu2 的双组分竞争吸附表明,黏土矿物对4种离子具有"选择性吸附"。在Pb2 、Ni2 、Cd2 的存在条件下,黏土矿物对Cu2 的吸附产生不同程度的下降;100mg/LCu2 对Pb2 的影响不大,但可完全抑制Ni2 、Cd2 的吸附。建立了IAS和LCA模型来预测Pb2 与Cu2 的双组分竞争吸附,并对LCA模型进行修正,提出了更符合实际情况的竞争吸附模型。文章最后用LCA修正模型对Pb2 与Cu2 的双组分竞争吸附进行了模拟。  相似文献

Summary The Severn Estuary has been proposed as a site for a tidal power generating barrage. The character of the existing environment would be changed but, if the risks of accumulating pollutants and eutrophication can be avoided, the reduction in turbidity and tidal scour could increase species diversity and productivity. The interests of wading birds and wildfowl could be accommodated by special reserve areas. The main unknowns are the hydrographic and sedimentological regimes that would follow construction of a barrage, and prediction of biological changes depends on knowing the physical and chemical nature of the altered environment.  相似文献

选择乐安河—鄱阳湖湿地典型植物群落,采用重要值方法评价各样点植物群落特征并筛选出典型优势植物,通过室内理化测试分析不同生境中优势植物植株及其根区土壤中重金属Cu、Pb、Cd的含量;采用生物富集系数(BCF)方法评价不同优势植物对重金属Cu、Pb、Cd的富集特性。结果表明:研究区湿地植物以草本为主,在各样点共发现124种物种,包括蕨类植物2科2属2种,种子植物40科97属122种,并从中筛选出羊蹄、红蓼、鼠曲草、紫云英、苎麻等5种富集能力较强的优势植物;植物根区土壤中的Cu、Cd含量均超过土壤环境质量三级标准,而且Cu、Cd的最高含量分别为824.03、5.03 mg·kg-1;不同优势植物对Cu、Pb、Cd等3种重金属元素中的1种或2种表现出较强的富集能力,其中优势物种红蓼对Cu具有较强的富集能力,含Cu量最高为148.80 mg·kg-1,另一种优势物种鼠曲草对三种元素的生物富集系数均较高,且对Cd的最高富集含量为15.17 mg·kg-1,对Cd的生物富集系数最高值为19.14,高于其他植物10倍以上,鼠曲草对重金属Cd具有富集植物的基本特征,且对Cu和Cd具有共富集特征并具有较高的耐性,紫云英、羊蹄等对Cd的富集能力也较强。上述5种优势植物种群对鄱阳湖湿地Cu、Pb、Cd等重金属污染物的生态修复具有一定参考价值,可作为鄱阳湖湿地重金属污染修复植物的选择对象。  相似文献

Influence of chosen elements on the dynamics of the cariogenic process   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This prospective study comprised 140 natural crowns of the teeth extracted from 31 boys and 35 men, as well as 39 girls and 35 women. They were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of primary teeth and group II consisted of permanent teeth. In each group, two subgroups were distinguished: subgroup A containing teeth without caries and subgroup B comprising carietic teeth. Zinc, iron, copper, nickel, chromium, cobalt, lead, cadmium, selenium, and strontium were determined in the samples by using the total reflection X-ray fluorescence method. Significantly higher concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, nickel, selenium, and strontium were detected in the crowns of healthy primary and permanent teeth than in the crowns of the carietic primary and permanent teeth. The concentrations of chromium, cobalt, lead, and cadmium were significantly higher in primary and permanent teeth with caries than in the healthy ones. Judging from the obtained results, we think that lower concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, nickel, selenium, and strontium together with higher concentrations of chromium, cobalt, lead, and cadmium in the carietic primary and permanent teeth, in relation with the respective concentrations of those elements in healthy teeth, can be one of the caries risk factors.  相似文献
