Diving birds can lose significant body heat to cold water, but costs can be reduced if heat from exercising muscles or the heat increment of feeding (HIF) can substitute for thermogenesis. Potential for substitution depends jointly on the rate of heat loss, the rate of heat produced by exercise, and the level of HIF. To explore these interactions, we measured oxygen consumption by lesser scaup ducks (Aythya affinis) diving to depths of 1.2 and 2 m at thermoneutral (23°C) and sub-thermoneutral (18 and 8°C) temperatures. Birds dove while fasted and when feeding on blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). Substitution occurred if HIF or costs of diving above resting metabolic rate (RMR) were lower at 18 or 8°C than at 23°C, indicating reduction in the thermoregulatory part of RMR. For fasted scaup diving to 1.2 m, substitution from exercise heat was not apparent at either 18 or 8°C. At 2 m depth, dive costs above RMR were reduced by 5% at 18°C and by 40% at 8°C, indicating substitution. At 1.2 m depth (with voluntary intake of only 14–17% of maintenance requirements), HIF did not differ between temperatures, indicating no substitution. However, at 2 m (intake 13–25% of maintenance), substitution from HIF was 23% of metabolizable energy intake at 18°C and 22% at 8°C. These results show that even with low HIF due to low intake rates, substitution from HIF can add to substitution from the heat of exercise.  相似文献

The heat increment of feeding (HIF), a transient postprandial increase in metabolic rate, is the energy cost of processing a meal. We measured HIF in house wren chicks (Troglodytes aedon) ranging in mass from 1.6 to 10.3 g. This mass range (age 2–10 days) spanned a transition from blind, naked, ectothermic chicks through alert, endothermic birds with nearly complete feathering. We fed chicks crickets (2.7–10% of chick body mass) and determined HIF from continuous measurements of oxygen consumption rate (O2) before and after meals. At warm ambient temperatures (T a) of 33–36 °C, the magnitude of HIF (in ml O2 or joules) was linearly related to meal mass and was not affected by chick mass. HIF accounted for 6.3% of ingested energy, which is within the range of results for other carnivorous vertebrates. The duration of HIF was inversely related to chick mass; 10-g chicks processed a standard meal approximately twice as fast as 2-g chicks. HIF duration increased with increasing meal mass. The peak O2 during HIF, expressed as the factorial increase above resting metabolism, was independent of body mass and meal mass. Genistein, a phytoestrogen found in soybeans, is a powerful antioxidant. We evaluated the effects of genistein supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics, levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), homocysteine, vitamins C, E, A in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) exposed to high ambient temperature of 34 degrees C. Two hundred and forty Japanese quails (10 d old) were randomly assigned to eight treatment groups consisting of 10 replicates of three birds. The birds were kept in an environmental controlled room either for 24 h/d at 22 degrees C with (thermoneutral, TN groups) or for 16 h/d at 22 degrees C and for 8 h/d (09.00 am to 05.00 pm) at 34 degrees C (heat stress, HS groups). Birds were fed either a basal (control) diet (TN and HS) or the basal diet supplemented with 200, 400 or 800 mg of genistein per kg of diet. Heat exposure decreased birds' performance when basal diet was fed. Increase in feed intake and body weight, and improvement of feed efficiency and carcass traits were found in genistein-supplemented quails reared under heat stress conditions. Growth rate and feed efficiency improved in quails reared under thermo-neutral conditions as well. Concentration of serum vitamins C, E, and A increased in supplemented birds reared at high temperature, while non-significant changes occurred in TN groups. With genistein supplementation homocysteine levels in serum and MDA levels in serum and liver decreased in all birds of both TN and HS groups. Effects of genistein were relatively greater in heat-stressed quails than in quails kept under thermo-neutral conditions. Results of the present study suggest that supplementation with genistein can be considered to be protective by reducing the negative effects of oxidative stress induced by heat stress in quail.  相似文献

The heat increment of feeding (HIF) was investigated in the tawny owl (Strix aluco) in central Norway (63°N, 10°E), close to the northern limit of its distribution. HIF was measured as the increase in heat production (measured as oxygen consumption) after force-feeding the owls with laboratory mice at thermoneutral conditions (20 °C) and during cold-exposure (5 °C and −5 °C). The basal metabolic rate of the owls (mean mass 419 g) was 4.39 kJ h−1 and the lower critical temperature was approximately 16 °C. During cold conditions, HIF substituted for thermogenesis, and at an ambient temperature of −5 °C the substitution was complete. Calculations indicate that the substitution by HIF may save the owls as much as 60% of their daily thermoregulatory costs. This corresponds to about 10% of their total daily energy budget.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of arginine on feed intake regulation. One hundred and twenty six 1-day-old male White Pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domestica) were randomly were allotted to one of two dietary treatments. The birds were fed diets containing 0.71% (deficient) or 1.27% (sufficient) arginine for 3 weeks. At 21 days of age, feed intake was determined and hypothalamic protein profiles were analyzed using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification technique. The birds fed with arginine-deficient diet had a lower final live BW and cumulative feed intake (P<0.01) than those fed with arginine-sufficient diet. A total of 16 proteins were identified in the hypothalamus with >1.5-fold expressional changes between arginine-deficient and -sufficient dietary treatments. Nine of these proteins were upregulated and seven of them were downregulated. The identified proteins could be regrouped into six categories: protein processing, carbohydrate metabolism and energy production, transporter, cytoskeleton, immunity and neuronal development. Dietary arginine deficiency decreased expression of proteins involved in energy production (glycine amidinotransferase, aldolase B fructose-bisphosphate, aconitase, transaldolase, 6-phosphofructokinase type C-like) and oxygen transportation (haemoglobin subunit α expression). The proteomic alterations described here provides valuable insights into the interactions of arginine with appetite.  相似文献

Juvenile (3.0 ± 0.2 g) gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) were fed to satiation for 8 weeks to investigate the effect of feeding frequency on growth, feed utilization and size variation. Five feeding frequencies were tested: two meals per day (M2), three meals per day (M3), four meals per day (M4), 12 meals per day (M12) and 24 meals per day (M24). The results showed that daily food intake increased significantly with the increase in feeding frequency and there was no significant difference between daily food intakes in M12 and M24 treatments. Growth rate, feed efficiency increased significantly with increasing feeding frequencies. Size variation was not affected by feeding frequency. Apparent digestibility of dry matter was not influenced by feeding frequency, while apparent digestibility of protein and energy increased significantly at high feeding frequencies. The feeding frequency had no significant effect on the moisture, lipid, protein, or energy contents of gibel carp, while the ash content decreased with increased feeding frequency. It was recommended that 24 meals per day was the optimal feeding frequency for juvenile gibel carp.  相似文献

Feed intake and its daily pattern are regulated both at a short and a long term by several control pathways, including energy balance regulation. This trial aimed to determine the effect of dietary fibre (DB) (mix of wheat, soy and sugar beet pulp fibres) and aleurone supplementation and their interaction on energy and nitrogen balances in growing pigs with ad libitum access to feed. Forty pigs (BW: 35 kg) were fed diets differing by fibre concentration (NDF concentration: 10% or 14% DM) and aleurone supplementation (0, 2 or 4 g/kg) during 3 weeks. Pigs were housed individually in a respiration chamber during the last week to record feeding behaviour and measure energy and nitrogen balances (n = 36). Glucose oxidation was studied on the 6th day with an injection of [U-13C] glucose and measurement of 13CO2 production. There was no significant interaction between DB inclusion and aleurone supplementation on any variables characterizing feeding behaviour. Pigs had less but longer meals with high level of DB, with an increased interval between two meals without effect on daily feed intake. The meal frequency significantly decreased when aleurone supplementation increased. Total tract apparent digestibility coefficient of DM, organic matter, ash, nitrogen and gross energy decreased when pigs received high DB level. Dietary fibre level increased significantly faecal excreted nitrogen. Aleurone supplementation decreased nitrogen retention. Free access to the feed induced a great individual variability not only in feed intake level (from 784 to 2290 g/day) but also in feeding behaviour (from 5.5 to 21.5 meals per day). This variability can be linked with the importance of underlying feed intake regulation pathways and difference in energy balance and metabolism efficiency. Several profiles of metabolism efficiency can be discriminate, thanks to a clustering based on feeding behaviour and pre-prandial concentrations of metabolites and hormones. In conclusion, DB inclusion decreased meal frequency, increased average meal size, decreased total tract apparent faecal digestibility coefficient of nitrogen and gross energy. Supplementation of aleurone decreased average daily feed intake with a reduction of the meal number per day, without modification of average meal size. Aleurone supplementation decreased nitrogen retention and nutrient deposition. Independently of experimental diets, the high individual variability permitted discriminating different profiles with different metabolic strategies. Efficient pigs with a high energy retention as protein and lipid seem to be able to adapt their metabolism according to energy sources.  相似文献

Four Holstein heifers (264 ± 12 kg initial BW) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-day experimental periods to determine the effect of increasing levels of sodium bicarbonate (BICARB) (0%, 1.25%, 2.5% and 5%, of concentrate dry matter (DM) basis) on chewing and feed intake behavior when fed high-concentrate diets. Concentrate (13.41% CP, 13.35% NDF) and barley straw were fed once a day at 0830 h ad libitum. Feed bunks placed on scales and video recording were used to measure 24-h feed intake and chewing behavior, respectively. The patterns of feeding behavior (feed intake, meal size and length) and chewing behavior (eating, ruminating and total chewing) were studied by dividing the day into 12 intervals of 2-h each, beginning at feeding (interval 1 through 12). Number of meals per day and eating rate decreased linearly with increasing buffer level, but meal length increased linearly. No treatment effects were observed in sum of daily meal lengths or average meal size. The treatment × interval interaction was significant on meal size, length and feed intake. The size and length of those meals occurring during the 4 h post-feeding increased linearly. However, meal size tended to decrease in the evening between 8 and 12 h, whereas feed intake decreased linearly from 6 to 10 h and from 12 to 14 h post-feeding. Buffer concentration did not affect the percentage of time spent ruminating, eating or drinking per day but the buffer level × interval interaction was significant. Time spent eating expressed as min per kg of DM or organic matter (OM) intake increased linearly with buffer levels. Proportion of time spent eating increased linearly during the intervals between 0 and 4 h post-feeding. Time spent ruminating decreased linearly during the 2 h post-feeding, and also in the evening from 12 to 14 h, and at night from 18 to 22 h post-feeding, but the effect was quadratic between 8 and 10 h when intermediate buffer levels showed the greatest ruminating time. Time spent drinking decreased linearly from 6 to 8 h but increased during the 2 h following feeding and from 10 to 12 h post-feeding. Daily eating rate and meal frequency decreased linearly as the buffer level increased, but average meal size and daily chewing times were not affected. However, significant time of the day × buffer level interactions were observed for feed intake, meal size and length and chewing behavior.  相似文献

Short-term feed preferences were studied in individually caged chickens fed sequentially in order to understand a previously described imbalance in the intake of diets offered. Sequential feeding (SF) was carried out for four 48 h cycles in male broiler chickens. The diets varied in energy (2800 (E−) and 3200 kcal/kg (E+)) and protein (230 (P+) and 150 g/kg (P−)) contents. SF was compared to standard feeding (C) (3000 kcal/kg ME and CP = 190 g/kg). In experiment 1, three treatments were used: C, SE (E− followed by E+) and SE′ (E+ followed by E−). Four treatments were used in experiment 2: C, SP (P+ followed by P−), SE and SEP (P+E− followed by P−E+). Total feed intake was measured during the SF period. After this, short-term preferences were evaluated with a choice test on chickens previously fed with the same feeds during the SF period (experienced birds) and in C chickens (naïve birds). In both experiments, total feed intake was similar among treatments and the percentage of each feed consumed was not significantly different from controls (50%). In experiment 1, SE and SE′ chickens over-consumed E+ and under-consumed E− diets only during the first 15 min of the fourth cycle. The choice test indicated that experienced chickens preferred E+, while naïve chickens preferred E−. Similarly, in experiment 2, chickens over-consumed E+ and E+P− during the first 15 min of the fourth cycle, but the intake of diets varying in protein content was not different from controls. During the choice test, as in experiment 1, experienced chickens preferred E+, while naïve chickens preferred E−. There was a slight preference for the protein-poor diet in naïve birds and there was no preference in the diet varying in both protein and energy contents. Experience modified choice between feeds varying in energy content but not in protein. When feeds were known, preference for energy affected the feed intake immediately after switching from one diet to the other, although lower with the diet also varying in protein, it did not influence the total intake of each diet. Interactions between the nutritional properties and sensorial cues of feed could explain these results.  相似文献

Effects of a supplementation of 80mg L-carnitine perkg diet were studied in broiler chicken at two dietary levels of fat (4 and 8 %) and different feeding levels (ad libitum in a growth trial, 95 and 85 % of ad libitum in a balance trial). A low-carnitine basal diet adequate in amino acid concentration was used. In the growth trial, each diet was fed to 9 groups of 10 birds each for 16 days from day 5 of live onwards. Growth and feed intake were determined. At the end of the trial, birds were killed and homogenised for subsequent empty body analysis. Accretion of protein and energy was determined using a representative blank group killed at the beginning of the trial. In the balance trial, 8 individual birds were used per treatment. Birds were offered the feed at approximately 85 and 95% of ad libitum intake, which was determined with separate birds for both fat levels. Excreta were quantitatively collected three times daily for 8 consecutive days beginning on day 17 individually for each bird. Supplemented L-carnitine did not significantly affect any response criterion. However, growth and feed conversion tended to be improved by about 5% in the carnitine supplemented diets when fed ad libitum. An interaction between carnitine and fat level occurred with regard to feed conversion, indicating that carnitine had a positive effect at the high fat level, but not at the low fat level. L-carnitine did not positively affect the metabolisability of energy (ME/GE) and the efficiency of energy utilisation (RE/GE or RE/ME). Similarly, no significant carnitine effect was determined with regard to N accretion and the efficiency of utilisation of dietary protein in both trials. It is concluded that endogenous carnitine synthesis is not the limiting factor for energy utilisation in broiler chicken, even at high dietary fat concentration. Occasionally reported positive effects of supplemental carnitine were likewise caused by reasons other than improved energy or protein utilisation. Further studies on amino acid utilisation and catabolism should consider marginal amino acid supply.  相似文献

Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were subjected to intermittent fasting for six weeks, for three of which their environmental temperature was reduced to 4 degrees C. They were compared with a control group (fed ad libitum and kept at 22 degrees C), a group subjected six weeks only to intermittent fasting at 22 degrees C and a group fed ad libitum for six weeks, but exposed to a temperature of 4 degrees C after the third week. The effect of these various nutritional and temperature regimens on growth, on food consumption, on the formation of liver glycogen and lipid reserves and on energy metabolism was studied. Adaptation to cold raised the hamsters' food intake above the hyperphagia level observed during intermittent fasting. Cold and intermittent fasting acted synergically in raising basal oxygen consumption values and reducting the amount of body lipids. They acted antagonistically on the liver glycogen concentration; when they were used simultaneously, the effect of intermittent fasting preponderated.  相似文献

Effects of a high (33 degrees C) or thermoneutral (23 degrees C) temperature on body temperature and endocrine parameters were studied in weaned piglets. Rectal and skin temperatures were measured in four ad libitum fed animals per temperature during three weeks. After this acclimation period, 11 blood samples were withdrawn on a 24-h period. Over the acclimation period, rectal and skin temperatures were 0.6 and 2.9 degrees C higher, respectively, at 33 degrees C than at 23 degrees C (P < 0.01), this change occurring from the 1st day at 23 or 33 degrees C. A tendency of serum leptin concentrations to be lower after meals at 33 degrees C than at 23 degrees C was also displayed (P = 0.09). Plasmatic concentrations in Insulin-like growth factor I and thyroxine were decreased at 33 degrees C relative to 23 degrees C (P < 0.01 and P < 0.06, respectively), and triiodothyronine concentrations tended to be lower at 33 degrees C than at 23 degrees C (P = 0.1), which could account for the lower heat production and growth observed in pigs exposed to high temperatures.  相似文献

Describing the feeding behavior of pigs is difficult given the large day-to-day variations observed for a given animal. The objectives of this study were to create an index that integrates the information from several components of feeding behavior in order to account for intra-animal variation within a day and between days, and to evaluate the capability of this index to study the impact of relevant nutritional factors affecting feeding behavior. Feed intake information from 160 pigs during the last 28 d of the growing phase from three studies was used. For each pig, the sum of the absolute values of the deviation areas between the regression line of the relative cumulative feed intake and the observed cumulative feed intake was used to calculate the weekly index measuring the irregularity of feed intake (IIFI). Spearman’s correlations of IIFI with the number of daily meals (r = −0.42; P < 0.001), meal duration (r = 0.38; P < 0.01), and feed intake per meal (r = 0.41; P < 0.01) indicate that pigs with high IIFI have fewer meals of longer duration and higher feed intake compared to pigs with low IIFI. This shows that IIFI captures information from several components of feeding behavior. Analysis of variance showed no effect of treatment on feeding behavior for datasets 1 and 2. However, the correlation between IIFI and dietary levels of CP (r = 0.34) indicates that diets high in CP were associated with pigs having more irregular meals. In dataset 3, pig feeding behavior was more regular in control diets than in pigs fed fibrous diets (IIFI; 164 vs. 197, respectively; P < 0.05). Additionally, IIFI was smaller in pigs fed canola by-product diets than in pigs fed wheat by-product diets, indicating that the source of fiber may also influence the feeding behavior of pigs. In most cases, IIFI was more effective at identifying differences in feeding behavior between dietary treatments than conventional feeding behavior variables. These results show the ability of IIFI to integrate information from several conventional components of the feeding behavior of pigs and its potential to successfully evaluate the effect of nutritional factors on feeding behavior.  相似文献

In chickens, elevated environmental temperature reduces food intake. We have previously reported that, during heat stress, the intestinal mucosa has an increased capacity to take up sugars. To investigate whether the effects of warm environment on sugar uptake are an intestinal adaptation to lower energy intake or a response attributable to heat stress, we examined the glucose transport kinetics of apical and basolateral membranes of the jejunum and the mucosal morphology of broiler chickens maintained in climatic chambers for 2 wk. Experimental groups were 1) control ad libitum (CAL), fed ad libitum and in thermoneutral conditions (20 degrees C); 2) heat stress ad libitum (HSAL), fed ad libitum and kept in a heated environment (30 degrees C); and 3) control pair-fed (CPF), maintained in thermoneutral conditions and fed the same amount of food as that consumed by the HSAL group. Both the CPF and the HSAL groups showed reduced body weight gain, but only the HSAL chickens had lower plasma thyroid hormones and higher corticosterone than CAL and CPF groups. The fresh weight and length of the jejunum were only reduced in the HSAL group. The activity and expression of apical sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT-1) were increased by approximately 50% in the HSAL chickens, without effects in the CPF group. No changes in K(d) or in SGLT-1 and glucose transporter-2 K(m) were observed in the pair-fed and heated birds. These results support the view that increased intestinal hexose transport capacity is entirely dependent on adaptations of apical SGLT-1 expression to heat stress and is not due to reduced food intake.  相似文献

With a view to alleviate the feeling of hunger in broiler breeders, different types of fibre sources were used in high-fibre diets to increase feed quantity while limiting growth to industry recommended levels. Using scatter feeding, three diets (C1: commercial control diet, 1 × fibre content, 80% insoluble fibre (ISF); H2: 2 × fibre content, 89% ISF; and L2: 2 × fibre content, 71% ISF) were each fed to 10 groups of 16 broiler breeder chickens. Similar growth rates were obtained on different quantities of food with all birds reaching commercial target weight at 15 weeks of age. In a hunger test, birds fed C1 ate significantly faster and showed a higher compensatory feed intake than birds on diets H2 and L2, indicating that the two high-fibre diets did reduce the level of hunger experienced by the birds. Behavioural observations carried out at 14 weeks of age showed high levels of tail pecking in birds fed C1 and almost none in birds fed L2, whereas birds fed H2 were intermediate. Stereotypic pecking at fixtures was seen twice as frequently in birds fed C1. Birds on diet L2 displayed behavioural signs indicative of discomfort, and the high water usage on this diet created problems with litter quality. Birds on diet H2 continued to show foraging behaviour throughout the day, and were more frequently engaged in dust bathing and other comfort behaviour. This experiment indicates that high-fibre diets can alleviate the feeling of hunger currently experienced by broiler breeders, and a high ratio of ISF may improve the well-being of the birds.  相似文献

The aim of this experiment was to study the consequences of precise feeding on the myofibre characteristics and metabolic traits of the breast muscle (Pectoralis major, Pm) of Muscovy ducks. Twenty-four samples of breast muscle, without skin or subcutaneous fat, from two groups of ducks, control and overfed respectively, were collected at 14 weeks of age. We assayed different chemical (water content, crude proteins, total lipid ashes, total and thermosoluble collagen), biochemical (activities of the CS, LDH and beta-HAD enzymes), histological (muscle fibre typing and intramuscular adipocyte measurements) and technological (drip and cooking losses, texture) determinations. At the force-feeding period, the overfed ducks weighed 6366 g and the control ducks 4606 g of body weight. In the PM muscle, some modifications of the biochemichal parameters and enzyme activities were observed but neither the shear force nor the histological characteristics of the breast muscle were affected by the fattening treatment. The overfed birds had an increased total lipids content (correlated to an increase in the intramuscular area occupied by the adipocyte) and a different fatty acid profile as the result of a higher energy feed intake. The lipids of the Pm muscle of the overfed ducks contained more C16:0, C16:1n-7 and C18:1n-9, but less C18:0, C18:2n-6 and C20:4n-6 than the control birds. These results show that in response to high energy feeding, the muscle is able to respond quickly on a metabolic basis (by increasing the activities of the oxydative enzymes) without changing its typology or morphology. Additionally, fattening was correlated to a degradation in the technological qualities of the breast muscle, especially an increase in the cooking losses.  相似文献

The objective of the current study was to investigate the impact of including whole wheat in broiler diets on the development of the digestive tract. Chickens were fed a standard feed containing 400 g ground wheat/kg or the same diet with a part of the wheat given separately as whole grains that increased progressively from 200 g/kg at 8 d to 400 g/kg at 22 d. Every week, from 16 to 44 d, growth performance, modifications of the size of the digestive tract organs and intestinal enzyme activities were investigated. Morphology of villi and crypts in the small intestinal segments (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) were analyzed at 23 and 44 d. Microbacterial counts were performed in jejunal, ileal and caecal contents weekly from 16 to 44 d.During the adaptation period from 8 to 15 d, the birds fed the whole wheat diet had lower feed intake and lower weight gain. Thereafter, they showed improved growth performance so that by the end of the experiment, they had higher body weight compared to the standard-fed birds, 2430 ± 29 versus 2331 ± 36 g.Higher relative weights of gizzard (+26%) and pancreas (+12%) were observed from 16 to 44 d for whole wheat-fed birds compared to standard-fed birds. No differences in relative size of the different intestinal segments were observed, except that the jejunum was shorter. Increased villus to crypt length and surface ratios were observed at 23 d in the duodenum of whole wheat-fed birds, with no differences in morphometry between groups thereafter. Alkaline phosphatase activity was higher from 16 to 44 d in the duodenum and jejunum of whole wheat-fed birds. However, the activities of the digestive enzymes, leucine aminopeptidase and maltase, were similar between the two diets in the measured intestinal segments.A lower number of facultative anaerobic bacteria was found in the ileum of the whole wheat-fed birds, with no differences between treatments for Escherichia coli and for Lactobacillus counts. In the jejunum and the caeca, no differences in microflora counts were observed.The present results showed that feeding whole grains to broilers led mainly to modifications in the upper part of the digestive tract (gizzard, pancreas) and had little influence on the small and large intestine.  相似文献

The calorigenic effect of feeding and its potential benefit in defraying thermoregulatory costs and attenuating immersion hypothermia of adult muskrats were investigated. A single session of feeding on aquatic vegetation was sufficient to raise the metabolic rate of muskrats for a period of at least 5 h. The peak postprandial rate of oxygen consumption averaged 1.42 times the level established for fasted animals, and the heat increment of feeding accounted for about 40% of the metabolizable energy intake of muskrats. There was no evidence of a postprandial rise in oxygen consumption of muskrats that entered water at 18–19°C after feeding. In aquatic trials, average and minimum steady-state oxygen consumption rates of fed muskrats were similar to, or even lower than values recorded from fasted animals, implying substitution of heat increment of feeding for thermoregulatory heat production. Our data did not support the hypothesis that heat increment of feeding retards body cooling in water. Net body temperature decline in water was actually higher in fed animals than in fasted controls. However, since previously fed muskrats also entered water at an elevated body temperature, the final body temperature (at 30 min immersion) was similar in all groups. These findings suggest that metabolic heat generated incidental to preimmersion feeding could provide a thermoregulatory benefit to muskrats by reducing the need for active thermogenesis in water.  相似文献

Comparative investigations were made between wild and domestic ruminants from arid and semi-arid regions and those species from non-arid areas in an attempt to evaluate the adaptations of these ruminants in terms of the effects of heat stress and dehydration on food intake and digestibility. The effect of (a) an intermittent heat load (a daily light cycle of 12 h at 22 degrees C and 12 h at 40 degrees C) compared to 22 degrees C throughout the day and (b) dehydration level of 15% weight loss, with and without the heat load, on the intake and digestibility of a poor quality hay was investigated in the Grant's gazelle, Oryx, the domestic Turkana goats, fat-tailed sheep, zebu cattle, Thomson's gazelle and wildebeest. The intermittent heat load with water available ad libitum depressed the food intake of zebu cattle and Turkana goats by more than 40%. It had no significant effect on the food intake of the other species. The Thomson's and Grants gazelle, oryx, wildebeest and fat-tailed sheep appear well adapted to withstanding a periodic heat load. Dehydration at 22 degrees C caused a marked depression on food intake of all the species investigated. Dehydration together with a heat load caused no further reduction in the food intake by the Grants's gazelle, oryx, and goats but it did cause a further reduction in the intake in the other species. The small non-domestic ruminants (i.e. Grant's and Thomson's gazelle) appear much more digestive efficient than any of their domestic counterpart.  相似文献
