We report here the first comprehensive seasonal study of benthic microbial activity in an Antarctic coastal environment. Measurements were made from December 1990 to February 1992 of oxygen uptake and sulfate reduction by inshore coastal sediments at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, Antarctica. From these measurements the rate of benthic mineralization of organic matter was calculated. In addition, both the deposition rate of organic matter to the bottom sediment and the organic carbon content of the bottom sediment were measured during the same period. Organic matter input to the sediment was small under winter ice cover, and the benthic respiratory activity and the organic content of the surface sediment declined during this period as available organic matter was depleted. On an annual basis, about 32% of benthic organic matter mineralization was anoxic, but the proportion of anoxic compared with oxic mineralization increased during the winter as organic matter was increasingly buried by the amphipod infauna. Fresh organic input occurred as the sea ice melted and ice algae biomass sedimented onto the bottom, and input was sustained during the spring after ice breakup by continued primary production in the water column. The benthic respiratory rate and benthic organic matter content correspondingly increased towards the end of winter with the input of this fresh organic matter. The rates of oxygen uptake during the southern summer (80 to 90 mmol of O2 m-2 day-1) were as high as those reported for other sediments at much higher environmental temperatures, and the annual mineralization of organic matter was equally high (12 mol of C m-2 year-1). Seasonal variations of benthic activity in this antarctic coastal sediment were regulated by the input and availability of organic matter and not by seasonal water temperature, which was relatively constant at between -1.8 and 0.5°C. We conclude that despite the low environmental temperature, organic matter degradation broadly balanced organic matter production, although there may be significant interrannual variations in the sources of the organic matter inputs.  相似文献

The Lower Jurassic, Blue Lias Formation at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England is rhythmically bedded with symmetrical rhythms consisting of laminated black shale followed by dark then pale marls (sometimes cemented into pale limestones) and back to laminated black shale. Its trace fossil fauna includes nine ichno‐genera and represents a shallow shelf paleoenviron‐ment. The ichnofauna occurs in three assemblages named after consistently occurring ichnogenera. A Chondrites assemblage (diversity = 1 ichnogenus) and a Chondrites‐Arenicolites assemblage (diversity = 2–3 ichnogenera) are typical of dark marls but may penetrate tops of laminated black shales. A thalassi‐noides‐Chondrites‐Arenicolites assemblage (diversity up to 7 ichnogenera) is typical of pale marls or limestones. Blue Lias limestones are diagenetic: dark laminated limestones and pale bioturbated limestones are cemented equivalents of laminated black shales and pale marls, respectively. However, pale burrow fills in darker sediments and vice versa confirm the rhythms are primary. Rhythms represent redox cycles, fluctuating from anoxic laminated black shales lacking mac‐robenthos or infauna (bioturbation index = 0) to oxic, bioturbated, pale marls or limestones with large mac‐robenthos such as Gryphaea or Plagiostoma and diverse infauna (bioturbation index = 5).  相似文献

This study investigated the sources of organic matter and sediment depositional environment within fluviatile sediments of the Ganges–Meghna (GM) delta plains. The very low contents of trace metals e.g., chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), scandium (Sc), and vanadium (V), organic carbon content, and cerium (Ce)-anomaly data of sediments indicate the redox conditions that fall within the boundary of oxic–anoxic condition, with dominantly oxic conditions in the sediment deposition environment. The higher atomic carbon nitrogen (C/N)a ratios and depleted stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) values for sediments from three study areas indicated the terrestrial sources of organic matter derived from C3 plant materials, whereas the contribution of organic materials from C4 vegetation and riverine productivity is low. Some silty sand samples exhibited lower (C/N)a ratios and enriched δ13C values in Sonargaon and Faridpur areas that are attributed to the adsorption of ammonium ions on clay minerals and the contribution of organic matter from C4 plants. Total sulfur over total organic carbon (TS/TOC) ratios in sediments of the Ganges delta reflect the nonmarine environments of sediment deposition. The lower ratios of syringyl to vanillyl phenols (S/V), cinnamyl to vanillyl phenols (C/V), and acid to aldehyde in vanillyl phenols (Ad/Al)v observed in Daudkandi indicate that the lignin in sediments derived from dominant woody gymnosperm sources and is very highly degraded. By contrast, the S/V ratio, C/V ratios, and [Ad/Al]v ratios in Faridpur suggest that the lignin in sediments derived from a mixture of woody and nonwoody angiosperm plant tissue contribution that underwent high degradation as well.  相似文献

We examined the decay of chlorophyll a and the carotenoid fucoxanthin in oxic and anoxic sediment microcosms, with and without the deposit-feeding benthic amphipod Monoporeia affinis, over 57 days at 5 degrees C. Deep frozen phytoplankton from the Baltic Sea proper was added to all but a few microcosms. The range of chlorophyll a and fucoxanthin decay rate constants observed in microcosms with phytoplankton addition was 0.04-0.07 day(-1). The fastest pigment decay and build-up of chlorophyll breakdown products after phytoplankton addition were found in oxic treatments with amphipods. No effects of amphipods on pigment breakdown were found in anoxic treatments, or in treatments without phytoplankton addition. Greater losses of chlorophyll a in oxic (96%) than in anoxic (80%) treatments after 57 days indicates that preservation of sedimentary organic matter will be enhanced during periods of anoxia. Due to slow recruitment and recolonization in Baltic sediments, a single anoxic event may cause long-term (years) absence of significant macrobenthos. Anoxic events will thus not only reduce decay of plant pigments, and presumably other organic matter, while they last, but will also have longer-term effects, through elimination of macrofauna, which when present enhance organic matter decomposition.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper addresses three related questions: (1) What factors control the efficiency of carbon burial in sediments? (2) Are rates of anaerobic organic matter degradation intrinsically lower than aerobic rates? (3) How important are anaerobic processes in the global marine sediment carbon economy?

Carbon burial efficiency (the ratio of the carbon burial rate and the carbon flux to the sediment surface) was estimated from literature data for a range of environments and was shown to be a function of sedimentation rate. No difference independent of sedimentation rate was found between aerobic and anaerobic sediments.

A review of recent microcosm and laboratory studies shows that anaerobic rates are not intrinsically lower than aerobic rates; fresh organic matter degrades at similar rates under oxic and anoxic conditions. Aerobic decomposition rates near the sediment surface are typically greater than anaerobic rates at depth because the most labile carbon is consumed before it can be buried in the anoxic zone.

A model approach was taken in estimating the importance of anaerobic processes in the global marine sediment economy, instead of extrapolating measured rates as done previously. The result, 150 Tg C yr?1, is two to nine times lower than previous estimates. This rate is about 9% of the global aerobic carbon oxidation rate and is about equal to the rate of long‐term carbon burial. The importance of anaerobic processes in marine sediments lies in their role in determining the amount of carbon preserved, not in the amount of carbon remineralized overall.  相似文献

Biogeochemical processes in the groundwater discharge zone of urban streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The influence of biogeochemical processes on nitrogen and organic matter transformation and transport was investigated for two urban streams receiving groundwater discharge during the dry summer baseflow period. A multiple lines of evidence approach involving catchment-, and stream reach-scale investigations were undertaken to describe the factors that influence pore water biogeochemical processes. At the catchment-scale gaining stream reaches were identified from water table mapping and groundwater discharge estimated to be between 0.1 and 0.8 m3 m?2 d?1 from baseflow analysis. Sediment temperature profiles also suggested that the high groundwater discharge limited stream water infiltration into the sediments. At the stream reach-scale, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) concentrations were higher in stream water than in groundwater. However, DOC and DON concentrations were greatest in sediment pore water. This suggests that biodegradation of sediment organic matter contributes dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the streams along with that delivered with groundwater flow. Pore water ammonium (NH4 +) was closely associated with areas of high pore water DOM concentrations and evidence of sulfate (SO4 2?) reduction (low concentration and SO4:Cl ratio). This indicates that anoxic DOM mineralization was occurring associated with SO4 2? reduction. However the distribution of anoxic mineralization was limited to the center of the streambed, and was not constrained by the distribution of sediment organic matter which was higher along the banks. Lower sediment temperatures measured along the banks compared to the center suggests, at least qualitatively, that groundwater discharge is higher along the banks. Based on this evidence anoxic mineralization is influenced by groundwater residence time, and is only measurable along the center of the stream where groundwater flux rates are lower. This study therefore shows that the distribution of biogeochemical processes in stream sediments, such as anoxic mineralization, is strongly influenced by both the biogeochemical conditions and pore water residence time.  相似文献

The effects of oxygen conditions and temperature on dynamics of greenhousegases (CH4, CO2, N2O) and nutrients(NH4 +, NO2 +NO3 , tot-P) were studied in sediment of hyper-eutrophic LakeKevätön, Finland. Undisturbed sediment cores were incubated at 6, 11,16, and 23 °C in a laboratory microcosm using a continuouswater flowtechnique with an oxic or anoxic water flow. The production of CO2increased with increasing temperature in both oxic (Q10 3.2 ±0.6) and anoxic (Q10 2.3 ± 0.4) flows. The release ofCH4 increased with temperature in anoxic conditions (Q102.3 ± 0.2), but was negligible with the oxic flow at all temperatures. The release of NH4 + increased with temperature with the oxic and anoxic flows(Q10 2.4 ± 0.1). There was a net production of NO2 , NO3 and N2O with the oxic flow at temperatures below16 °C. The release of phosphorus was greater from the anoxicsediments and increased with temperature with both the anoxic (Q102.9 ± 0.5) and oxic (Q10 1.9 ± 0.1) flows. It isprobable that the temperature of boreal lakes and the associated oxygendeficiency will increase as the climate becomes warmer. Our experiments showedthat this change would increase the global warming potential of greenhousegasesreleased from sediments of eutrophic lakes predominately attributable to theincrease in the CH4 production. Furthermore, warming would alsoaccelerate the eutrophication of lakes by increasing release of phosphorus andmineral nitrogen from sediments, which further enhance CH4productionin sediments.  相似文献

The effects of bioturbation in marine sediments are mainly associated with an increase in oxic and oxidized zones through an influx of oxygen‐rich water deeper into the sediment and the rapid transport of particles between oxic and anoxic conditions. However, macrofaunal activity also can increase the occurrence of reduced microniches and anaerobic processes, such as sulfate reduction. Our goal was to determine the two‐dimensional distribution of microniches associated with burrows of a ghost shrimp (Neotrypaea californiensis) and to determine microbial activities. In laboratory experiments, detailed measurements of sulfate reduction rates (SRR) were measured by injecting, in a 1 cm grid, radiolabelled sulfate directly into a narrow aquarium (40 cm × 30 cm × 3 cm) containing the complex burrow of an actively burrowing shrimp. Light‐coloured oxidized burrow walls, along with black reduced microniches, were clearly visible through the aquarium walls. Direct injection of radiotracers allowed for whole‐aquarium incubation to obtain two‐dimensional documentation of sulfate reduction. Results indicated SRR were up to three orders of magnitude higher (140–790 nmol SO42? cm?3 day?1) in reduced microniches associated with burrows when compared with the surrounding sediment. Additionally, some of the subsurface sulfate‐reducing microniches associated with the burrow system appeared to be zones of dinitrogen fixation. Bioturbation may also lead to decreased sulfate reduction in other microniches and the sum of the activity in all microniches might not result in a total increase of sulfate reduction compared with non‐bioturbated control sediments.  相似文献

The effects of drought on salt marsh sediments from Sapelo Island, Georgia, were examined in flow-through reactor experiments. Three hydrological treatments were employed: a continuously flooded anoxic control, a periodic drought treatment that experienced alternate periods of flooding and drying, and a severe drought treatment, where sediment was exposed to drought (drying) for several weeks and then flooded; the effect of both buffered and non-buffered flooding solutions were examined. In permanently anoxic sediments as well as in sediments exposed to drought, organic carbon oxidation was dominated by SO4 2? reduction (SR) and SR rates increased over time. The shift from anoxic to oxic conditions in drought treatments significantly altered sediment geochemistry and pathways of microbial metabolism. Drought conditions favored suboxic mineralization processes, such as Fe(III) reduction and denitrification, which was fueled by NH4 + oxidation promoted by O2 delivered during drought conditions. Other major drought-induced changes included pH decrease, and altered concentrations of solid phase adsorbed metals.  相似文献

An experimental approach of the phosphate exchange across the water–sediment interface in fish ponds of the Deroua farm (Béni-Mellal, Morocco) is needed to understand the phosphate dynamics in these ponds in relation to their water quality. During this study, we conducted experiments to determine the P-fractions of the different pond sediments and to estimate the release from these sediments of phosphate available for algal uptake. We also determined the amount of phosphate needed to saturate the sediments of two different fish ponds under anoxic and oxic conditions. Phosphate release from sediments comes mainly from Fe(OOH)P and is more important in ponds lined with sheets. The accumulation of organic matter in sediments favours the installation of anoxic conditions and enhances the phosphate release from CaCO3P, labile in these pond sediments. Under experimental conditions, org-P plays a minor role in the P-release. Oxic conditions, to the contrary, have an inhibitory effect on the P-release from sediments. About 80–98% of the P-adsorbed onto different pond sediments was recovered in the inorg-P-fractions. Aeration induces the oxidation of FeS to Fe(OOH) which can adsorb phosphate from solution. Besides, the presence of bacteria in pond sediments was essential to promote phosphate release under anoxic conditions by controlling the oxidation state of iron and the mineralization of the organic matter. Sheet-lined ponds, when insufficiently dried, accumulate a large quantity of organic matter in their sediments. After a decrease in pH, P is released from CaCO3P and enhances the phytoplankton productivity responsible for renewed accumulation of organic matter. Org-C concentrations in sediments over 20 mg g–1 d.w. favour the formation of toxic factors (Fe2+, Mn2+, NO2 and H2S) harmful for carp growth. An extended period of drying efficiently enhances the mineralization of organic matter.  相似文献

The relationships between P and components binding P were studied by analysing the concentrations of N, P, Fe, Mn, Ca and Al in sediments and pore water along the estuarine transect of the River Neva in August 1995. The high sediment organic matter concentration resulted in low surface redox potential and high pore-water o-P concentration, whereas the abundance of amphipods resulted in high surface redox potentials and low pore-water o-P concentration. However, despite the variation in sediment organic matter and the abundance of amphipods, very reduced conditions and slightly variable concentrations of Tot-P (0.7–1.1 mg g–1 DW) were observed in the 10–15 cm sediment depth along the estuarine gradient, indicating that the pools of mobile P were largely depleted within the depth of 0–15 cm. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that organic matter and Tot-Fe concentration of the sediment were closely related to the variation in Tot-P concentration of the sediments (r 2 = 0.817, n=32). In addition, the high total Fe:P ratio suggested that there is enough Fe to bind P in sediments along the estuarine gradient. However, low Fediss concentrations in the pore water of reduced sediment (redox-potential <–50 mV) indicated efficient precipitation of FeS (FeS and FeS2), incapable to efficiently bind P. Consequently, the low Fediss:o-P ratio (< 1) recorded in pore water in late summer implied that Fe3+ oxides formed by diffusing Fediss in the oxic zone of the sediments were insufficient to bind the diffusing o-P completely. The measured high o-P concentrations in the near-bottom water are consistent with this conclusion. However, there was enough Fediss in pore water to form Fe3+ oxides to bind upwards diffusing P in the oxic sediment layer of the innermost Neva estuary and the areas bioturbated by abundant amphipods.  相似文献

1. Lake eutrophication has increased phytoplankton blooms and sediment organic matter. Among higher plants, small, oligotrophic rosette species (isoetids) have disappeared, while a few tall, eutrophic species (elodeids) may have persisted. Despite recent reduction of nutrient loading in restored lakes, the vegetation has rarely regained its former composition and coverage. Patterns of recovery may depend on local alkalinity because HCO3? stimulates photosynthesis of elodeids and not of isoetids. In laboratory growth experiments with two isoetids (Lobelia dortmanna and Littorella uniflora) and two elodeids (Potamogeton crispus and P. perfoliatus), we test whether organic enrichment of lake sediments has a long‐lasting influence by: (i) reducing plant growth because of oxygen stress on plant roots and (ii) inhibiting growth more for isoetids than elodeids. We also test whether (iii) increasing alkalinity (from 0.17 to 3.20 meq. L?1) enhances growth and reduces inhibition of organic sediment enrichment for elodeids but not for isoetids. 2. In low organic sediments, higher oxygen release from roots of isoetids than elodeids generated oxic conditions to greater sediment depth for Lobelia (4.3 cm) and Littorella (3.0 cm) than for Potamogeton species (1.6–2.2 cm). Sediment oxygen penetration depth fell rapidly to 0.4–1.0 cm for all four species at even modest organic enrichment and oxygen consumption in the sediments. Roots became shorter and isoetid roots became thicker to better supply oxygen to apical meristems. 3. Growth of elodeids was strongly inhibited across all levels of organic enrichment of sediments being eight‐fold lower at the highest enrichment compared to the unenriched control. Leaf biomass of isoetids increased three‐fold by moderate organic enrichment presumably because of greater CO2 supply from sediments being their main CO2 source. At higher organic enrichment, isoetid biomass was reduced, leaf chlorophyll declined up to 10‐fold, root length declined from 7 to <2 cm and mortality rose (up to 50%) signalling high plant stress. 4. Lobelia was not affected by HCO3? addition in accordance with its use of sediment CO2. Biomass of elodeids increased severalfold by rising alkalinity from 0.17 to 3.20 meq. L?1 in accordance with their use of HCO3? for photosynthesis, while the negative impact of organically enriched sediments remained. 5. Overall, root development of all four species was so strongly restricted in sediments enriched with labile organic matter that plants if growing in situ may lose root anchorage. Other experiments demonstrate that this risk is enhanced by greater water content and reduced consolidation in organically rich sediments. Therefore, formation of more muddy and oxygen‐demanding sediments during eutrophication will impede plant recovery in restored lakes while high local alkalinity will help elodeid recovery.  相似文献

Constraints on Precambrian ocean chemistry are dependent upon sediment geochemistry. However, diagenesis and metamorphism can destroy primary biosignatures, making it difficult to consider biology when interpreting geochemical data. Modern analogues for ancient ecosystems can be useful tools for identifying how sediment geochemistry records an active biosphere. The Middle Island Sinkhole (MIS) in Lake Huron is an analogue for shallow Proterozoic waters due to its low oxygen water chemistry and microbial communities that exhibit diverse metabolic functions at the sediment–water interface. This study uses sediment trace metal contents and microbial abundances in MIS sediments and an oxygenated Lake Huron control site (LH) to infer mechanisms for trace metal burial. The adsorption of trace metals to Mn‐oxyhydroxides is a critical burial pathway for metals in oxic LH sediments, but not for the MIS mat and sediments, consistent with conventional understanding of Mn cycling. Micronutrient trace metals (e.g., Zn) are associated with organic matter regardless of oxygen and sulfide availability. Although U and V are conventionally considered to be organically complexed in suboxic and anoxic conditions, U and organic covary in oxic LH sediments, and Mn‐oxyhydroxide cycling dominates V deposition in the anoxic MIS sediments. Significant correlations between Mo and organic matter across all redox regimes have major implications for our interpretations of Mo isotope systematics in the geologic record. Finally, while microbial groups vary between the sampling locales (e.g., the cyanobacteria in the MIS microbial mat are not present in LH sediments), LH and MIS ultimately have similar relationships between microbial assemblages and metal burial, making it difficult to link trace metal burial to microbial metabolisms. Together, these results indicate that bulk sediment trace metal composition does not capture microbiological processes; more robust trace metal geochemistry such as isotopes and speciation may be critical for understanding the intersections between microbiology and sediment geochemistry.  相似文献

Profound biogeochemical responses of anoxic sediments to the fluctuation of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in overlaying water are often observed, despite oxygen having a limited permeability in sediments. This contradiction is indicative of previously unrecognized mechanism that bridges the oxic and anoxic sediment layers. Using sediments from an urban river suffering from long-term polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination, we analyzed the physicochemical and microbial responses to artificially elevated DO (eDO) in the overlying water over 9 weeks of incubation. Significant changes in key environmental parameters and microbial diversity were detected over the 0–6 cm sediment depth, along with accelerated degradation of PAHs, despite that eDO only increased the porewater DO in the millimeter subfacial layer. The dynamics of physicochemical and microbial properties coincided well with significantly increased presence of centimeter-long sulfide-oxidizing cable bacteria filaments under eDO, and were predominantly driven by cable bacteria metabolic activities. Phylogenetic ecological network analyses further revealed that eDO reinforced cable bacteria associated interspecific interactions with functional microorganisms such as sulfate reducers, PAHs degraders, and electroactive microbes, suggesting enhanced microbial syntrophy taking advantage of cable bacteria metabolism for the regeneration of SO42− and long-distance electron transfer. Together, our results suggest cable bacteria may mediate the impacts of eDO in anaerobic sediments by altering sediment physiochemical properties and by reinforcing community interactions. Our findings highlight the ecological importance of cable bacteria in sediments.Subject terms: Freshwater ecology, Water microbiology, Community ecology  相似文献

Rates of organic matter mineralization in peatlands, and hence production of the greenhouse gases CH4 and CO2, are highly dependent on the distribution of oxygen in the peat. Using laboratory incubations of peat, we investigated the sensitivity of the anoxic production of CH4 and CO2 to a transient oxic period of a few weeks’ duration. Production rates during 3 successive anoxic periods were compared with rates in samples incubated in the presence of oxygen during the second period. In surface peat (5–10‐cm depth), with an initially high level of CH4 production, oxic conditions during period 2 did not result in a lower potential CH4 production rate during period 3, although production was delayed ~1 week. In permanently anoxic, deep peat (50–55‐cm depth) with a comparatively low initial production of CH4, oxic conditions during period 2 resulted in zero production of CH4 during period 3. Thus, the methanogens in surface peal—but not in deep peat—remained viable after several weeks of oxic conditions. In contrast to CH4 production, the oxic period had a negligible effect on anoxic CO2 production during period 3, in surface as well as deep peat. In both surface and deep peat, CO2 production was several times higher under oxic than under anoxic conditions. However, for the first 2 weeks of oxic conditions, CO2 production in the deep peat was very low. Still, deep peat obviously contained facultative microorganisms that, after a relatively short period, were able to maintain a considerably higher rate of organic matter mineralization under oxic than under anoxic conditions.  相似文献

Spherical (~2 mm diameter) diatom (Skeletonema sp.) aggregates, representing analogues of “marine snow”, were placed at the sediment–water interface of an experimental sediment system. Optode measurements showed that, after an initial lag period, oxygen concentrations within the aggregates decreased and then were gradually replenished, resulting in a temporary anoxic microniche. A multi-species, 3-dimensional, reactive transport model was used to simulate the oxygen dynamics and the associated biogeochemical consequences. Temporal and spatial changes in oxygen were replicated assuming an exponential increase in the mineralisation rate constant and a gradual exhaustion of reactive organic material. The peak value of the time-dependent reaction rate constant of organic matter mineralisation (k OMM) was seven to sixty times greater than analogous values measured previously in water column experiments. The validated model was used to investigate how the size and reactivity of parcels of organic matter influence the formation of anoxic microniches at the sediment–water interface of typical deep-sea environments. As well as k OMM, the concentration of reactive organic matter in the aggregate, its size and porosity were also critical in determining the likelihood of anoxic microniche formation. For the optimum fitted parameters describing k OMM and the concentration of reactive organic matter, the minimum diameter of the parcel to induce anoxia was 1.8 mm, whereas it was 2.8 mm to make a significant contribution to the denitrification occurring in a typical deep-sea sediment. This work suggests that anoxic microniches resulting from the settlement of marine aggregates may play an overlooked role for denitrification activities in deep-sea sediments.  相似文献

We studied the biochemical degradation of organic matter comprising marine diatom, land grass, and salt marsh plant in estuarine ecosystems in two laboratory microcosms consisting of estuarine sediments and coastal seawater. The materials were incubated separately and together under controlled oxic and anoxic conditions to test effects of co-metabolism and redox on overall degradation of organic matter. We followed variations of bulk parameters [total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, δ13CTOC, and δ15NTN], fatty acid concentrations, and compound-specific δ13C values over 3 months. Coexistence of marine diatom (relatively labile) with land grass/salt marsh plant (relatively refractory) in the microcosms yielded a negative co-metabolism effect (retardation rather than acceleration) on the overall degradation of organic matter. The ratios of oxic to anoxic degradation rate constants (k ox/k an) of TOC and most fatty acids were in a range of 1.1–1.7, implying that redox conditions per se had a limited influence on degradation of fresh organic materials in estuarine ecosystems. Variations of two bacteria-specific fatty acids (iso- and anteiso-15:0) and their δ13C values indicated that bacterial metabolism could use organic carbon (OC) from any available material when only one single-source material was dominant in the ecosystems. However, bacteria probably utilized OC preferentially from labile marine diatom when multiple-source materials were almost equally present in the ecosystems.  相似文献

Viral and prokaryote abundance were investigated in a deep-hypersaline anoxic basin of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (DHAB Atalante basin at c. 3000 m depth). This system was compared with two nearby deep-sea sites characterized by oxic conditions. Viral abundance and virus to prokaryote abundance ratio in hypersaline anoxic sediments displayed values close to those reported in oxic sites. The analysis of vertical profiles of viral abundance in the Atalante basin revealed the lack of significant changes with depth in the sediment, suggesting that benthic viruses in these anoxic and hypersaline conditions are preserved or resistant to decay. The anoxic basin displayed also very high concentrations of labile organic components (proteins and lipids) and extracellular DNA. These findings suggest that the DHAB sediments represent a reservoir for long-term preservation of benthic viruses and nucleic acids.  相似文献

Microbial communities inhabiting highly permeable sediments of Checker Reef in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, were characterized in relation to porewater geochemistry (O2, NO3 , NO2 , NH4 +, phosphate). The physiologically active part of the population, assessed by sequencing cDNA libraries of 16S rRNA amplicons, was very diverse, with an estimated ribotype richness ≥1,380 in anoxic sediment. Quantitative analysis of community structure by rRNA-targeted fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) indicated that the archaeal population (9–18%) was dominated by marine Crenarchaeota (5–9%). Planctomycetales were the most abundant group in the oxic and interfacial habitat (17–19%) but were a minority (<5%) in anoxic reef sediment, where γ-Proteobacteria were numerically dominant (18%). Another 9–14% of the microbial benthos belonged to β-Proteobacteria, predominantly within the order Nitrosomonadales, many cultured representatives of which are NH4 + oxidizers. The results of this study contribute to the phylogenetic characterization of benthic microbial communities that are important in organic matter degradation and nutrient recycling in coral reef ecosystems.  相似文献

Mixing of sediments by moving animals becomes apparent in the trace fossil record from about 550 million years ago (Ma), loosely overlapping with the tail end of the extreme carbonate carbon isotope δ13Ccarbonate fluctuations that qualitatively distinguish the Proterozoic geochemical record from that of the Phanerozoic. These Precambrian‐scale fluctuations in δ13Ccarbonate (PSF‐δ13Ccarbonate) remain enigmatic, due to their high amplitude and inclusion of global‐scale negative δ13Ccarbonate values, below anything attributable to mantle input. Here, we note that different biogeochemical‐model scenarios plausibly explaining globally synchronous PSF‐δ13Ccarbonate converge: via mechanistic requirements for extensive anoxia in marine sediments to support sedimentary build‐up of 13C‐depleted carbon. We hypothesize that bioturbation qualitatively reduced marine sediment anoxia by exposing sediments to oxygenated overlying waters, which ultimately contributed to decreasing the carbon cycle's subsequent susceptibility to PSF‐ δ13Ccarbonate. Bioturbation may also have reduced the quantity of (isotopically light) organic‐derived carbon available to contribute to PSF‐ δ13Ccarbonate via ocean crust carbonatization at depth. We conduct a comparative modelling exercise in which we introduce bioturbation to existing model scenarios for PSF‐ δ13Ccarbonate: expressing both the anoxic proportion of marine sediments, and the global organic carbon burial efficiency, as a decreasing function of bioturbation. We find that bioturbation's oxygenating impact on sediments has the capacity to prevent PSF‐ δ13Ccarbonate caused by authigenic carbonate precipitation or methanogenesis. Bioturbation's impact on the f‐ratio via remineralization is partially offset by liberation of organic phosphate, some of which feeds back into new production. We emphasize that this study is semiquantitative, exploratory and intended merely to provide a qualitative theoretical framework within which bioturbation's impact on long‐term, first‐order δ13Ccarbonate can be assessed (and it is hoped quantified in more detail by future work). With this proviso, we conclude that it is entirely plausible that bioturbation made a decisive contribution to the enigmatic directionality in the δ13Ccarbonate record, from the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian boundary onwards.  相似文献
