This article draws on ethnographic and historical materials to interpret several related photographs and ritual images created by Fuyuge-speakers of highland Papua. The images are analysed as techniques of vision. That is, the images are shown to bring forth present perceptions in a timely manner, as evaluated by Fuyuge men and women. It is shown how the representations are informed by distinctive Fuyuge retentions of the past in the present, and extensions of the present in the future. The article suggests that the tendency to 'read' photographic images for their semiotic connotations misses the local perceptions at work in their creation and use. Rather, photographic and ritual images are analogous to the relations of persons that produce them, with their mutually connected temporality.  相似文献

The purpose of the present investigation was to characterize and determine the number of NADPH-diaphorase positive neurons around the central canal in the rabbit spinal cord. These neurons are known to function as interneurons and are present in all spinal cord segments. They differ in shape of their bodies and in length and branching of their processes. The main differentiation was observed in their number, depending on the place of their localization. The highest number of these NADPH-diaphorase positive neurons was in sacral part (6 in average), the lowest one was noticeable in thoracic spinal cord (1-2 in average). It can be concluded that pericentral neurons of the rabbit spinal cord are capable of synthesizing nitric oxide and that they differ in number, depending on the place of their localization in each spinal cord segment.  相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides are present in all walks of life, from plants to animals, and they are considered to be endogenous antibiotics. In general, antimicrobial peptides are determinants of the composition of the microbiota and they function to fend off microbes and prevent infections. Antimicrobial peptides eliminate micro-organisms through disruption of their cell membranes. Their importance in human immunity, and in health as well as disease, has only recently been appreciated. The present review provides an introduction to the field of antimicrobial peptides in general and discusses two of the major classes of mammalian antimicrobial peptides: the defensins and the cathelicidins. The review focuses on their structures, their main modes of action and their regulation.  相似文献

Peroxisomes in three forms of vertebrate kidney (pronephros, mesonephros, and metanephros), as permanent or provisional kidney, are summarized concerning their ultrastructure and developmental changes. Because the peroxisome is known to be diverse in mammalian metanephros, and species difference is its distinctive feature among cell organelles, information should be obtained on each kidney of each species. The ultrastructural and biochemical features of peroxisomes have at least been partly delineated in the metanephros and mesonephros, but nothing is known about the pronephros. Ultrastructural studies of the metanephric peroxisomes are present in mammals, birds, and reptiles, but information on their development is restricted to mammals and birds. As for the mesonephric peroxisomes, both ultrastructural and developmental data have been accumulating on mammals and amphibians, and ultrastructural information is present on fishes, but not on birds and reptiles. At present, studies on peroxisomes of provisional kidney have been restricted to mammalian mesonephros. The common features of renal peroxisomes previously examined are that they are spherical cell organelles with a single limiting membrane in ultrastructure, and are positive for catalase. Information on the ultrastructure and enzymes is not sufficient at present for comparing the ontogenesis of renal peroxisomes with their phylogenesis. Plant cell wall-degrading enzymes, such as cellulases, hemicellulases and pectinases, have been extensively studied because of their well documented biotechnological potential, mainly in the food industry. In particular, lytic enzymes from filamentous fungi have been the subject of a vast number of studies due both to their advantages as models for enzyme production and their characteristics. The demand for such enzymes is rapidly increasing, as are the efforts to improve their production and to implement their use in several industrial processes, with the goal of making them more efficient and environment-friendly. The present review focuses mainly on pectinolytic enzymes of filamentous fungi, which are responsible for degradation of pectin, one of the major components of the plant cell wall. Also discussed are the past and current strategies for the production of cell wall-degrading enzymes and their present applications in a number of biotechnological areas.  相似文献

Flavonoids are widely present in plants as water-soluble glycosides but the lipophilic free aglycones are far less abundant. The 462 flavonoids reported so far to be present in the free state and their plant sources are listed. Evaluation of these data reveals a correlation in most cases between the occurrence of flavonoid aglycones, the presence of secretory structures and the production of other lipophilic plant products. Their accumulation in some plant organs and in certain taxa is discussed. Special attention is given to their occurrence in materials deposited externally on leaves and buds.  相似文献

The natural distribution of these fishes, the history of their introduction, their success in acclimatization, and their present distribution in the British Isles are given. This review presents an overview of the present status of the biology of the myxobacteria, including the molecular biology of the systems that control and regulate myxobacterial gliding movement and morphogenesis. The present status of myxobacterial taxonomy and phylogeny is described. The evolutionary biology of the myxobacteria is emphasized with respect to their social behavior and the molecular basis of their signal chains. Most important within the metabolic physiology are the biologically active secondary metabolites of myxobacteria and their molecular mechanisms of action. The global distribution of myxobacteria in soils is described on the basis of data given in the literature as well as of comprehensive analyses of 1398 soil samples from 64 countries of all continents. The results are analyzed with respect to the spectrum and number of species depending on ecological and habitat-specific factors. The myxobacterial floras of different climate zones are compared. Included are myxobacterial species adapted to extreme biotopes. The efficiency of different methods used presently for isolation of myxobacteria is compared.  相似文献

The methods currently available to deliver functional labels and drugs to the cell cytosol are inefficient and this constitutes a major obstacle to cell biology (delivery of sensors and imaging probes) and therapy (drug access to the cell internal machinery). As cell membranes are impermeable to most molecular cargos, viral peptides have been used to bolster their internalisation through endocytosis and help their release to the cytosol by bursting the endosomal vesicles. However, conflicting results have been reported on the extent of the cytosolic delivery achieved. To evaluate their potential, we used gold nanoparticles as model cargos and systematically assessed how the functionalisation of their surface by either or both of the viral peptides TAT and HA2 influenced their intracellular delivery. We evaluated the number of gold nanoparticles present in cells after internalisation using photothermal microscopy and their subcellular localisation by electron microscopy. While their uptake increased when the TAT and/or HA2 viral peptides were present on their surface, we did not observe a significant cytosolic delivery of the gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

A rapid review is made of the history of malaria control, calling attention to differences between the evolution of the technical concepts, the formulated strategies and their implementation. Particular emphasis is placed on the discussion of the present situation of the world malaria problem and the difficulties faced by many endemic countries in adopting a malaria control strategy, based on primary health care, while their services are vertically organized for the performance of routines, which are irrelevant for disease control. The present malaria control strategy recognizes local variability, but it is possible to identify a limited number of types of situations, likely to respond to similar approaches. The definition not only of the control approaches but also of their conditions of applicability will become more precise as experiences are accumulated and adequately documented from different types of epidemiological situations. It is postulated that historical research on the malaria control and public health approaches, with proper attention being given to their socioeconomic and political context, in the countries which succeeded in controlling endemic malaria, will make an important contribution to such a definition.  相似文献

Ag in the extracellular fluids can be internalized, processed, and presented in association with class I MHC molecules on specialized APC in normal spleen. We examine the fate of these APC after they present Ag to a CTL. When splenocytes present exogenous OVA to CTL, their ability to subsequently present native Ag in association with both class I and class II molecules is inhibited. CTL do not inhibit the ability of splenocytes to present processing independent peptides with class I or class II molecules. Inhibition of Ag presentation is only observed in the presence of the specific Ag recognized by the CTL. This inhibition is MHC-restricted. In the presence of specific Ag, CTL inhibit the ability of APC to present unrelated Ag. However, bystander APC are not affected by activated CTL. Taken together these results indicate that when APC present exogenous Ag to CTL, they are inhibited or killed. The CTL that mediates this activity has a conventional CD4-CD8+ phenotype and utilizes a TCR-alpha beta. The potential significance of these findings and their possible relationship to phenomena associated with Ts cells are discussed.  相似文献

On human endothelial cells from umbilical cord (HUVEC) are present, in addition to E- and P-selectins, their cognate ligands. Differently from selectins, the ligand expression is constitutive and not modulated by interleukin-1beta. Such ligands appear to be different from the ones present in promyelocytic cells in order to promote cell adhesion to immobilized selectins. The expression of selectin-ligands on HUVEC cells suggest that selectins can participate in endothelial signalling besides their role as adhesion molecules for circulating blood cells. However, despite their role in chemotaxis, selectins do not contribute to HUVEC tube formation in Matrigel.  相似文献

The human kallikrein locus on chromosome 19q13.3-13.4 contains kallikrein 1--the tissue kallikrein--and 14 related serine proteases. Recent investigations into their function and evolution have indicated that the present nomenclature for these proteins is inadequate or insufficient. Here we present a new nomenclature in which proteins without proven kininogenase activity are denoted kallikrein-related peptidase. Names are also given to the unique rodent proteins that are closely related to kallikrein 1.  相似文献

Orbicules were studied in 43 species belonging to 32 genera of the five tribes of the Ixoroideae (Rubiaceae). The orbicules were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), light microscopy (LM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Orbicules are present in all species investigated of the tribes Pavetteae, Octotropideae and Coffeeae. In the tribes Gardenieae and Aulacocalyceae orbicules were found in some species, while they were absent in others. 15 species out of 11 genera lack orbicules. Three orbicule types (III, V, and VI) could be distinguished, mainly on the basis of general morphological and ultrastructural variations. Orbicules that belong to type III (0.50-1.29μm) have perforations in their wall, a regular or irregular shape and two or three electron transparent cores. This orbicule type, exclusively found in all Pavetteae species investigated, can be divided into two subtypes. Orbicules of subtype IIIa are present in all genera related to Ixora, and orbicules of subtype IIIb in those genera related to Tarenna. Orbicules of type V (0.97-1.86μm) are present in Himalrandia tetrasperma (Aulacocalyceae), and in all Octotropideae genera investigated, except Feretia. Complexes of more than three individual orbicules characterize this type. They are irregularly shaped and have many perforations as well as sporopollenin granules on the orbicule wall. In all species investigated of tribe Coffeeae, type VI orbicules (0.56-1.60μm) are present. These orbicules are characterized by their embedded position towards the tapetal membrane, their aggregated form and by the presence of perforations as well as sporopollenin granules on their orbicule wall. In the tribe Gardenieae different types of orbicule were found (V, VI and orbicules that cannot be classified in our typology). Our results suggest that orbicule characters in the Ixoroideae may be systematically useful on tribal level.  相似文献

The ability of axolotls to regenerate their limbs is almost legendary. In fact, urodeles such as the axolotl are the only vertebrates that can regenerate multiple structures like their limbs, jaws, tail, spinal cord, and skin (the list goes on) throughout their lives. It is therefore surprising to realize, although we have known of their regenerative potential for over 200 years, how little we understand the mechanisms behind this achievement of adult tissue morphogenesis. Many observations can be drawn between regeneration and other disciplines such as development and wound healing. In this review, we present new developments in functional analysis that will help to address the role of specific genes during the process of regeneration. We also present an analysis of the resemblance between wound healing and regeneration, and discuss whether axolotls are superhealers. A better understanding of these animals' regenerative capacity could lead to major benefits by providing regenerative medicine with directions on how to develop therapeutic approaches leading to regeneration in humans.  相似文献

The 22nd Ion Channel Meeting was organized by the French Ion Channel Society (Association Canaux Ioniques) from the 25th to the 28th of September 2011 on the French Riviera (Giens). This year again, more than one hundred researchers from France, Europe and extra-European countries gathered to present and discuss their recent advances and future challenges in the ion channels and transporters field. The scientific committee organized a plenary lecture and five thematic symposia by inviting international researchers to present their recent outstanding work on themes as diverse as muscular channelopathies, regulation of channels by extracellular matrix, receptor-channels interactions, localization and distribution of ion channels, their involvement in the cell life and death, and finally how they participate in the evolution and adaptability of cellular excitability. These presentations are summarized in this meeting report. Two sessions of oral communications selected from submitted abstracts and two poster sessions were also organized to present the ongoing work of young researchers worldwide.  相似文献

Muscarinic receptors in the gastrointestinal tract are present on enteric neurons, presynaptic and prejunctional axonal endings, intramural endocrine cells as well as directly on effector cells such as smooth muscle and glandular and epithelial cells. Neural M1 stimulatory receptors are present on myenteric and submucous neurons, while neural M2 inhibitory receptors are present on their axonal endings. Muscle M2 and glandular M2 receptors are stimulatory. Functional and ligand binding studies show that there is heterogeneity among different muscarinic receptors in the gastrointestinal tract. The neural M1 muscle M2 and glandular M2 receptors are distinct from each other, but presynaptic and prejunctional M2 receptors appear to be similar to muscle M2 receptors. The relationship of the gut muscarinic receptors to the structurally-defined muscarinic receptors in the brain is unclear. However, they appear to be different from cardiac M2 and brain M2 receptors.  相似文献
