We investigated the extent to which photoperiodic fluctuations synchronize annual thyroid and gonadal rhythmicity in edible dormice. The effects of different daylength manipulations (LD 4:20, LD 6:18, LD 18:6, LD 20:4) were examined during the two critical ascending and regressive phases of the annual plasma testosterone and thyroxine cycles that correspond to naturally increasing or decreasing photoperiod variations. The data failed to demonstrate any essential photoperiodic contribution to control systems that generate these two annual biological rhythms in dormice.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the circannual cycles of fat deposition and depletion in hibernating bats, annual rhythm of body weight was examined in Vespertilio superans superans under a variety of environmental conditions. Under near natural conditions, adult females put on weight rapidly from October to November. The laboratory born subadult females kept in constant darkness at warm temperature gained weight at the same time as the adults. The length of weight cycle was about 10 months in adult females kept in 14 L : 10 D at about 24°C. These results suggest that cycles of fat deposition and loss are controlled by a modifiable endogenous circannual rhythm. Body weight rhythm persisted normally under warmer environmental conditions preventing the bats from hibernation. It is considered that the circannual cycles of fat gain and loss are relatively stable and not dependent on the hibernation cycle. Prolonged gestation period and delayed beginning of lactation by cold environment in summer did not affect the body weight rhythm. Temperature may be a more important environmental stimulus (or Zeitgeber) for the circannual rhythm than light and its effects may vary with phases.  相似文献

Plasma glucose and glucagon concentrations were measured in edible dormice during the bout of hibernation, arousal and active periods. During lethargy, plasma glucose and glucagon were low, compared to active values and did not fluctuate throughout the phase. During rewarming, plasma glucose regularly increased from 17 degrees to 37 degrees C while plasma glucagon rose after the 17 degrees C stage and reached the higher values at 26 degrees C, then slightly decreased at 37 degrees C. During arousal, plasma levels of free amino acids progressively increased. The effect of temperature and secretagogue (glucose and arginine) on glucagon secretion was studied using perfused pancreas from hibernating edible dormouse. In vitro rewarming of pancreas induced an increase in glucagon secretion. Glucagon secretion was regulated by glucose (inhibitory effect) and by arginine (stimulating effect) up to 25 degrees C. The effect of temperature and glucagon on oxygen uptake of hibernating edible dormouse brown fat was studied using an in vitro technique. Rewarming strongly increased oxygen consumption from 10 to 37 degrees C. Glucagon enhanced oxygen consumption up to 20 degrees C.  相似文献

Summary This study was conducted to determine changes in thyroid-gonadal interaction in the edible dormouse during the phase of the annual cycle that corresponds to the end of the breeding season (from June to September). We evaluated intra-hypothalamic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) content, and plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4) in three groups of dormice: (1) controls; (2) dormice receiving sufficient T4 supplementation to maintain June levels in control animals until September, thus counteracting the seasonal reduction of T4 that normally begins in July; and (3) thyroidectomized dormice. The effect of thyroidectomy was only detectable in June, when plasma T4 concentration in the control group was maximal, and consisted of a significant decrease in plasma testosterone levels. This provides strong support for the hypothesis that thyroid function positively influences gonadal function during the breeding season. The T4 supplementation resulted in a decrease in hypothalamic LHRH concentration, suggesting that an increased LHRH release led to the observed stimulated hypophyseal secretion of LH in June and September and the increased circulating testosterone levels in September. There was no detectable effect in July and August. These results show that thyroid axis activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal system is only possible during certain phases of the annual cycle, particularly evidenced here during the breeding season. They also reinforce our conclusions drawn from the thyroidectomy results. Conversely, the summer testicular regression which normally occurs after the breeding season is no longer controlled by plasma T4 levels. Even though the sensitivity of the gonadal axis to the thyroid axis appears to reappear at the end of the summer, results of previous studies indicate that this resumption is only temporary.Abbreviations LH luteinizing hormone - LHRH luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone - RIA radioimmunoassay - T4 thyroxine - TSH thyroid-stimulating hormone  相似文献

Annual patterns of hibernation, body weight, plasma testosterone and thyroxine were measured in two groups of edible dormice exposed to a constant photoperiod and to either environmental temperature (I), the four functions displayed annual cycles and the two hormonal cycles were parallel and restricted to the aroused state, while in group II only irregular infradian fluctuations were observed. However, a body temperature of 30 degrees C remained the critical lower limit enabling the start of the testosterone cycles for the two groups. Respective roles of endogenous and synchronizing mechanisms in controlling biological rhythms are discussed.  相似文献

1. The effect of insulin on U-14C-glucose oxidation by adipose tissue isolated from hibernating or arousing edible dormouse has been studied. 2. CO2 production derived from radioglucose was analysed point by point during in vitro rewarming (from 6 to 37 degrees C). 3. The rate of temperature increase was 2 degrees/5 min in order to mimic the rate of rewarming during the spontaneous arousal of the dormouse. 4. Insulin did not increase the glucose oxidation by the adipose tissue from hibernating dormouse whereas adipocytes from active animal present high insulin sensitivity. 5. These results suggest that insulin resistance occurs during hibernation.  相似文献

Different groups of Helix pomatia were exposed to short light pulses (1 or 2 hours) during a long dark period (16 or 14 hours) of a 24-hour cycle of light and dark. The effect of the light pulses on the hibernation of the snails was shown to depend on the circadian time the pulses were introduced. Some of these light pulses reduced the hibernation. In other experiments groups of snails were exposed to 12-hour cycles or 24-hour cycles of equal periods of light and dark. Hibernation was reduced by the former as compared to the latter. These results show that Helix pomatia exhibits photoperiodic control of hibernation by a discontinuous or cyclic mechanism of time measurement.  相似文献

Summary A dormouse found in hibernation in its winter nest on January 26 was studied continously from February 5 until May 11 by recording ambient temperature, temperatures inside the nest ball and 5 cm from it, and by recording any possible motor activity. The first emergence from hibernaculum occurred on April 3 after which the animal was active each day with the exception of April 11, 13 and 14. Activity mainly occurred during evening and night hours and lasted on average 4 hrs (2–8 hrs) per day. Outside periods of activity the winter nest was consistently used as a place of shelter and for sleep. The ambient temperature ranged from-0.5° to 21.0°C being chiefly 1°C less the nestbox temperature. The difference between the nest-box and nest temperature was also about 1°C when the animal was inactive, thus clearly indicating torpidity. Steep increases in nest temperature, amounting to 14–18°C and raising nest temperature up to 30°C, were recorded on four occasions. This is interpreted as shallow torpor, since no activity occurred on these days. The spontaneous warming up from deep hypothermia to shallow torpor lasted on average 40 min (30–70 min), while the duration of passive cooling when returning to the hypothermic condition amounted to 5 hrs. In the weeks following continuous hibernation the dormouse alternated between activity, shallow torpor, and relatively deep torpor each day. The species should be considered as a true aestivator.  相似文献

Summary Photoperiod plays an important role in controlling the annual reproductive cycle of the male lizard Anolis carolinensis. The nature of photoperiodic time measurement in Anolis was investigated by exposing anoles to 3 different kinds of lighting paradigms (resonance, T cycles, and night breaks) to determine if photoperiodic time measurement involves the circadian system. Both the reproductive response and the patterns of entrainment of the activity rhythm were assessed. The results show that the circadian system is involved in photoperiodic time measurement in this species and that a discrete photoinducible phase resides in the latter half of the animals' subjective night. Significantly, the ability of the circadian system to execute photoperiodic time measurement is crucially dependent on the length of the photoperiod. Resonance, T cycle and night break cycles utilizing a photoperiod 10–11 h in duration reveal circadian involvement whereas these same cycles utilizing 6 or 8 h photoperiods do not.Abbreviation CRPP circadian rhythm of photoperiodic sensitivity  相似文献

Plasma glucose and insulin have been studied during lethargy and spontaneous arousal of hibernating edible dormouse. During lethargy blood glucose was low while plasma insulin remained at the same level as in other seasons. Plasma glucose and insulin did not fluctuate along the phase of lethargy. During spontaneous arousal plasma insulin rose strongly from the 17 degrees C stage, reaching the higher values at 26 degrees C while blood glucose was only 85 mg/100 ml, then decreased at 37 degrees C. The effect of glucose and temperature on insulin secretion was studied using perfused pancreas preparation from hibernating edible dormice. During the rewarming of the edible dormouse pancreas the insulin release did not occur in response to the absolute extracellular glucose level but occurred in response to a B cell membrane phenomenon which was dependent on the changing rate of glucose level. The effect of glucose and temperature on insulin secretion from perfused pancreas was compared between edible dormouse and homeotherm permanent, the rat. The B cell response to glucose of the dormouse pancreas increased up to 15 degrees C whereas that of the rat only from 25 degrees C. The dormouse insulin secretion reached a peak value at the 30 degrees C of temperature, whereas that of the rat progressively increased until 37 degrees C. These results showed that some biochemical adjustment or process of acclimatization took place in the B cells of the hibernators.  相似文献

In the circannual pupation rhythm of the varied carpet beetle, Anthrenus verbasci, entrainment to annual cycles is achieved by phase resetting of the circannual oscillator in response to photoperiodic changes. In order to examine whether a circadian system is involved in expression of the periodic pattern and phase resetting of the circannual rhythm as photoperiodic responses, we exposed larvae to light-dark cycles with a short photophase followed by a variable scotophase (the Nanda-Hamner protocol). When the cycle length (T) was a multiple of 24 h, i.e., 24, 48, or 72 h, short-day effects were clearer than when T was far from a multiple of 24 h, i.e., 36 or 60 h. Exposure to light-dark cycles of T = 36 h had effects similar to exposure to long-day cycles of T = 24 h. The magnitude of phase shifts depended on the duration and the phase of exposure to the cycles of T = 36 or 60 h. It was therefore concluded that a circadian system is involved in photoperiodic time measurement for phase resetting of the circannual oscillator of A. verbasci.  相似文献

Photoperiodic control of diapause induction was systematically investigated in the cabbage butterfly, Pieris melete, which enters summer and winter diapause as a pupa. Summer and winter diapause are induced principally by short and long scotophases, respectively; the intermediate scotophases (11-12 h) permit pupae to develop without diapause. Photoperiodic responses under 24-h light-dark cycles at 16.9, 18, 20 and 22 °C showed that the hibernation response was temperature compensated, whereas aestivation response was strongly temperature-dependent. The incidence of diapause for both aestivation and hibernation showed a decline at the ultra-short and ultra-long scotophases. Experiments using non-24-h light-dark cycles showed that the length of the scotophase played an essential role in the determination of diapause. The highest photosensitivity differed under hibernation and aestivation conditions. With a 3 × LD 12:12 interruption, a maximal inhibition of aestivation occurred in the L3/2 stage, and of hibernation it occurred in the L4/0 stage. A long-night of LD 10:14 induced hibernation diapause but inhibited aestivation diapause and, conversely, a short-night of LD 14:10 inhibited hibernation diapause but induced aestivation diapause. With a 1-h light pulse at LD 11:13, a maximal inhibition of hibernation occurred 3 h before lights-on (late scotophase), whereas, with a 1-h light pulse at LD 12.5:11.5, a maximal induction of aestivation occurred 2-3 h after the onset of darkness (early scotophase). Nanda-Hamner and Bünsow experiments failed to reveal the involvement of a circadian system, suggesting that the photoperiodic time measurement for diapause induction in this butterfly resembles an hourglass-like timer or a damped circadian oscillator.  相似文献

High affinity melatonin-binding sites have been described, by means of autoradiography with 2-125I-melatonin as the ligand, in more than 60 brain areas of about 20 mammalian species, with dramatic variations in the nature and number of labelled structures among the different species studied. As melatonin is involved in the synchronization of biological rhythms, we have tried to correlate the brain areas containing melatonin-binding sites with some rhythmic functions typical of give species. Therefore, we have studied the location of melatonin-binding sites in the complete brain of five long-day breeders with hibernation cycles, viz. one insectivore and four rodents. With the exception of the suprachiasmatic nuclei and the pars tuberalis of the pituitary, both of which contain binding sites in all five species, few reactive structures are common, even among species from the same family, e.g. the edible dormouse and the garden dormouse.  相似文献

Summary Female golden-mantled ground squirrels,Spermophilus lateralis, kept in a cool room (9.5 °C), were food deprived and their hibernation thereby extended by 11 weeks on average compared to undeprived control animals in the same room. The deprived group was then refed. Despite their prolonged hibernation, peak weights and onset of hibernation in the subsequent season were only 2–4 weeks later than in the undeprived controls and this effect was only marginally significant. However, the periods of circannual cycles of both the deprived and undeprived groups in the cool room were significantly longer than those of another group of female ground squirrels kept in a warm room (21 °C). It is argued that warm temperatures are capable of terminating the winter phase of circannual cycles, namely that of hibernation and declining body weight. If animals are kept continuously in a cool environment this phase ends spontaneously. Even many weeks of food deprivation are only capable of extending this phase by a relatively small amount, if at all.The author thanks Kirsteen Lang for invaluable help at every phase of this work, Linda Jones and others at the Environmental Sciences Centre, Kananaskis, for heir cooperation, and Janice Farintosh, John Ting and Yasmin Shah for collecting data. Abstract. Both oscillator and hourglass features are found in the photoperiodic response that controls the pupal winter diapause of Mamestra brassicae. The expression of oscillatory response to extended long-night cycles is temperature dependent, i.e. circadian resonance appears at 23 and 25oC but not at 20 and 28oC. At 20oC, scanning of extended scotophases by a short light pulse does not reveal any clear circadian rhythmicity. However, a circadian feature of the photoperiodic response is indicated even at 20oC by a bistability phenomenon, i.e. either one of the two dark periods in symmetrical skeleton photoperiods determines the diapause response depending on the phase angle with the preceding (entraining) light-dark cycles. At 20 and 25oC, the incidence of diapause increases as a function of the number of light–dark cycles regardless of the cycle length (T) , if T is 24 h or 2 X 24h (with a 12 h light period). A non-diel cycle (r=36h) is less effective, suggesting that disturbance of the circadian organization partly impairs the diapause-inducing function. The inductive effect of a long night is largely affected by temperature, and becomes saturated with eight cycles at 20oC and 14 cycles at 25oC. Presumably, an hourglass mechanism measures the dark time, and a circadian component involved in some later sequence of the photoperiodic response may or may not be expressed depending on the mode of interaction between them.  相似文献

Torpor was monitored daily in adult male and female European hamsters (Cricetus cricetus) induced to hibernate by exposure to a cold environment (6 degrees C). The effect of photoperiodic manipulations or administration of exogenous gonadal steroids was examined in gonadectomized or intact hamsters. 1. Gonadal regression occurred in all short day, but only in some long day, cold-exposed hamsters. Entry into hibernation was not observed until reproductive regression had occurred. Thus, gonadal atrophy appears to be a necessary precondition for hibernation. 2. Castrated hamsters in the short day cold condition showed a significantly greater incidence of torpor than those in the long day cold condition. Hence, photoperiod affected torpor independently of its effect on the gonadal cycle. 3. Testosterone, when administered via silastic capsules at near physiological levels, completely inhibited torpor in gonadectomized male and female hamsters hibernating in the short day cold condition. 4. In ovariectomized females, torpor was unaffected by progesterone treatment, but partially inhibited by estradiol. A greater inhibition of torpor was observed when estradiol-primed females were administered both estradiol and progesterone simultaneously. Thus, the effect of both hormones may be functionally comparable to that of the single testicular hormone. 5. Estradiol inhibited torpor to a greater extent in intact and ovariectomized female hamsters hibernating in long days than those in short days, suggesting an effect of photoperiod on responsiveness to estradiol. These results indicate an inverse relationship between the gonadal and hibernation cycles, and a probable role for gonadal steroids to influence the timing of the hibernation season. However, non-gonadal factors must also be involved in controlling hibernation, since photoperiod affected the incidence of torpor in gonadectomized animals and because hamsters were able to terminate hibernation in the absence of gonadal hormones.  相似文献

In the spider mite Tetranychus urticae photoperiodic time measurement proceeds accurately in orange-red light of 580 nm and above in light/dark cycles with a period length of 20 h but not in 'natural' cycles with a period length of 24 h. To explain these results it is hypothesized that the photoperiodic clock in the spider mite is sensitive to orange-red light, but the Nanda-Hamner rhythm (a circadian rhythm with a free-running period tau of 20 h involved in the photoperiodic response) is not and consequently free runs in orange-red light. To test this hypothesis a zeitgeber was sought that could entrain the Nanda-Hamner rhythm to a 24-h cycle without inducing diapause itself, in order to manipulate the rhythm independently from the orange-red sensitive photoperiodic clock. A suitable zeitgeber was found to be a thermoperiod with a 12-h warm phase and a 12-h cold phase. Combining the thermoperiod with the long-night orange-red light/dark regime, both with a cycle length of 24 h, resulted in a high diapause incidence, although neither regime was capable of inducing diapause on its own. The conclusion is that the Nanda-Hamner rhythm is necessary for the realization of the photoperiodic response, but is not part of the photoperiodic clock, because photoperiodic time measurement takes place in orange-red light whereas the rhythm is not able to 'see' the orange-red light. It is speculated that the Nanda-Hamner rhythm is involved in the timely synthesis of a substrate for the photoperiodic clock in the spider mite.  相似文献

The edible dormouse (Glis glis) is a small rodent and an obligate hibernator. Dormice undergo strong fluctuations of reproductive output during years that seem to be timed to coincide with future food supply. This behaviour enables them to avoid producing young that will starve with a high probability due to food shortage, and to increase their lifetime reproductive success. Aims of this study were to elucidate the extent to which feeding ecology in the edible dormouse has an impact on body mass and the fatty acid (FA) pattern of the white adipose tissue (WAT) before and after hibernation, which in turn might influence reproductive status in spring. Dormice show strong seasonal fluctuations of the body mass, which is reduced by one third during hibernation. Body mass and its changes depend on autumnal food availability as well as on the dietary FA pattern. During the pre-hibernation fattening period, dormice eat lipid rich food with a high content of linoleic acid. During hibernation, linoleic acid content is slightly but significantly reduced and body mass loss during winter is negatively correlated with the pre-hibernation linoleic acid content in the WAT. No relation between reproductive status and body mass, body condition or the FAs pattern of the WAT could be detected. However, in a year of high reproduction, dormice commence the shift to seed eating earlier than in a year of low reproduction. These seeds could be either a predictor for future food supply in autumn, or represent a high-energy food compensating high energetic costs of sexual activity in male edible dormice.  相似文献

The effects of food availability and ambient temperature (Ta) on hibernation in the Japanese dormouse,Glirulus japonicus, were examined. When the dormice were deprived of food under natural environmental conditions in midwinter, they showed typical hibernation patterns; in contrast, the animals given ad lib food did not show continuous long-term torpor. Furthermore, exposure to constant low temperature did not affect the torpor patterns in the animals receiving adequate food. These results suggest that food availability plays a decisive role in the onset and maintenance of hibernation in this species, and that low Ta does not have a great influence on the torpor patterns in animals with access to food. This differs from the previous study that emphasized the importance of Ta in the occurrence of torpor and discounted the effects of food shortage.  相似文献

Thyrassia penangae enters winter diapause as a prepupa in a cocoon. Photoperiodism of diapause induction was systematically investigated in this moth. The photoperiodic response curves under 24-h light-dark cycles showed that this insect is a typical long-day species. The critical daylength was 13 h 30 min at 25 °C, 13 h at 30 °C and 12 h 20 min at 28 °C. Transferring experiments from a short day (LD 12:12) to a long day (LD 15:9) or vice versa indicated that photoperiodic sensitivity mainly occurs during the larval period. In experiments using non-24-h light-dark cycles, when the length of photophase exceeded the critical daylength (13.5 h), was diapause inhibited effectively, even when the length of scotophase exceeded the critical nightlength (10.5 h). Only when a long scotophase was combined with a short photophase, diapause was induced effectively. This result suggests that daylength measurement is more important than nightlength measurement in T. penangae. Night interruption experiments under 24-h light-dark cycles exhibited two points of apparent light sensitivity, but the photosensitive position was highly influenced by temperature and the length of scotophase. Nanda-Hamner experiments failed to reveal the involvement of a circadian system in this photoperiodic time measurement. All light-dark cycles from LD 12:12 to LD 12:72 resulted in a short day response, and all cycles from LD 14:4 to LD 14:72 resulted in a long day response, suggesting that photoperiodic time measurement in this moth is performed by a day-interval timer or an hourglass-like clock.  相似文献
