The toxicity of para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), the main arthropod-repellent compound in the oil of the lemon eucalyptus, Corymbia citriodora, was evaluated against nymphs of Ixodes ricinus using five methods (A–E) of a contact toxicity bioassay. Mortality rates were estimated by recording numbers of dead nymphs
at 30 min intervals during the first 5 h after the start of exposure and at longer intervals thereafter. The mortality rate
increased with increasing concentration of PMD and duration of exposure with a distinct effect after 3.5 h. From the results
obtained by methods A, C and E, the LC50 range was 0.035–0.037 mg PMD/cm2 and the LC95 range was 0.095–0.097 mg PMD/cm2 at 4 h of exposure; the LT50 range was 2.1–2.8 h and the LT95 range was 3.9–4.2 h at 0.1 mg PMD/cm2. To determine the duration of toxic activity of PMD, different concentrations (0.002, 0.01, 0.1 mg PMD/cm2) were tested and mortality was recorded at each concentration after 1 h; thereafter new ticks were tested. This test revealed
that the lethal activity of PMD remained for 24 h but appeared absent after 48 h. The overall results show that PMD is toxic
to nymphs of I. ricinus and may be useful for tick control. 相似文献

In our search for tick repellents of plant origin, to be used as alternatives to commercial arthropod repellents, we investigated
the effect of the well known plant signaling compound methyl jasmonate (MJ) using nymphs of the tick Ixodes ricinus. In laboratory tests, pieces of cloth with MJ at 0.075, 0.15, 0.30 and 0.75 mg/cm2 yielded increasing repellencies against the nymphs: 57%, 71%, 92% and 99%, respectively, of the nymphs did not cling to the
cloth. Repellency of MJ was also investigated in a tick-infested woodland area in central Sweden. Cotton flannel cloths sprayed
with 0.05, 0.1 or 0.2 mg/cm2 MJ dissolved in acetone were dragged over the ground vegetation. The numbers of nymphs on the treated cloths were significantly
lower than those on the untreated cloth. Thus, MJ has, at the concentrations tested, significant repellent activity against
I. ricinus nymphs. 相似文献

Effectiveness of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, for controlling nymphal Ixodes scapularis, was tested in laboratory and field trials. In the laboratory, M. anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin strain ESC1 was moderately pathogenic, with an LC50 of 107 spores/ml and induced 70% mortality at 109 spores/ml. In a field study, however, 109 spores/ml M. anisopliae did not effectively control questing I. scapularis nymphs, and significant differences were not detected in pre- and post-treatment densities. For nymphs collected and returned to the laboratory for observation, mortality was low in treatment groups, ranging from 20 to 36%. To assess whether a chemical acaricide would synergistically enhance pathogenicity of the fungus, we challenged unfed nymphal I. scapularis with combinations of M. anisopliae and permethrin, a relatively safe pyrethroid acaricide, in two separate bioassays. Significant interactions between M. anisopliae and permethrin were not observed, supporting neither synergism nor antagonism. 相似文献

For the first time, the sequences of the TROSPA gene from taiga tick and sheep tick from Russia were obtained. Three specimens of sheep tick from Voronezh oblast and three specimens each of taiga tick from Irkutsk oblast and Perm krai were analyzed. At the end of the intron of the TROSPA gene in Ixodes persulcatus, a poly-T region was found. In addition, a fragment of the first exon containing a large number of differences in the nucleotide and amino acid composition both among species and within them was identified. 相似文献

The current concern about resistance to acaricides and the impact of toxic waste on the environment has led to the search of vegetal alternatives in the control of the brown tick of the dog Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae) derivatives have been associated with insecticidal, antimicrobial and antiprotozoal activities and essential oil showed to be lethal to R. microplus larvae. This study aimed at evaluating the acaricidal effect of essential oil of S. molle (EOSm) on engorged adult females and larval stages of R. sanguineus. One-hundred engorged females were obtained from the ears, interdigital spaces, neck, groin and base of the tail of two cross-bred dogs. The larvae package test was accomplished with 21-day-old larvae and five concentrations (v/v) of EOSm (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, 1 and 2%) in an anionic detergent, a synthetic acaricide (cypermethrin) and detergent and deionized water as controls. The immersion adult test was carried out with nine concentrations (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 20%) of the EOSm. At the concentration of 2%, EOSm caused 99.3% of larval mortality. In adults, inhibition of oviposition, egg hatching (EH) and reproductive efficiency (RE) values were dose-dependent from 4 to 20% EOSm; the lowest values of EH (29.62) and RE (22.61) were achieved with 20% EOSm. Strong and negative correlations were found between concentration of EOSm and EH (r?=???0.948) and between concentration of EOSm and RE (r = ??0.985). This study demonstrated for the first time the acaricidal effect of EOSm on larvae and reproductive parameters of engorged adult females of R. sanguineus. 相似文献

Larvae, nymphs and females of Ixodes sigelos Keirans, Clifford and Corwin (Ixodidae) were collected in 13 localities of the Patagonian region of Argentina parasitizing
eight species of sigmodontine rodents. We report for the first time adults of I. sigelos for Argentina. Besides, we extend the southern limit of its geographical distribution, and six species of sigmodontines are
added as new host species of I. sigelos (Phyllotis xanthopygus, Euneomys chinchilloides, Calomys musculinus, Reithrodon auritus, Loxodontomys micropus and Eligmodontia morgani). The presence of larvae, nymphs and females on sigmodontines, as well as more than 50% of the individuals engorged, indicate
that I. sigelos can develop the complete parasitic phase of its life cycle on these small mammals. The geographical distribution of I. sigelos is restricted to the biogeographical Andean Region in Argentina and Chile. 相似文献

The acaricidal activity of a methanolic extract and fractions from the rhizome of Cnidium officinale against Dermanyssus gallinae adults was investigated. The C. officinale methanolic extract exhibited 100% acaricidal activity after 48 h of treatment at a dose of 4000 ppm. The acaricidal constituents of the plant were sequentially partitioned with several solvents and then purified using silica gel column chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed (Z)-ligustilide as a constituent of C. officinale. Acaricidal activity was examined in three experimental tests (spray, fumigation and contact), with the spraying method being the most effective. The methanolic extract of C. officinale showed both contact and fumigant activities, though only fumigant activity was observed with (Z)-ligustilide. The fumigant effects of the methanolic extract and (Z)-ligustilide caused 86.5 and 62.6% mortality, respectively, of D. gallinae adults at 48 h. Among (Z)-ligustilide, acaricides (bifenthrin, cypermethrin and spinosad) and butylidenephthalide, bifenthrin displayed the highest acaricidal activity, and the activity of butylidenephthalide was 2.3-fold higher than that of (Z)-ligustilide. These results suggest that C. officinale-derived material can be used for the development of a control agent for D. gallinae. 相似文献

Amblyomma parvum Aragão (Acari: Ixodidae) is a tick species found with wide distribution in the Neotropical region. Even though it is a wildlife-related tick, it is also a frequent parasite of domestic animals, is aggressive to human beings and may harbor pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, it is a target species for control on domestic animals, particularly those at the rural–wildlife interface. Herein, the efficacy of two isolates (E9 and IBCB 425) of an entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato, already evaluated for ticks that parasitize domestic animals, was tested against unfed A. parvum adults. Both isolates displayed high acaricidal efficacy after immersion in fungal conidial suspensions for 5 min. Isolate E9 killed all ticks by the 7th day post-treatment, and isolate IBCB 425 did so by the 11th day. Tick mortality of 80 and 90% was achieved as early as the 3rd and 4th days, respectively, with both treatments. Thus, if a commercial M. anisopliae s.l. acaricide against domestic animal ticks is developed, it would also be effective against A. parvum. 相似文献

Tick-borne diseases present a major threat to both human and livestock health throughout Europe. The risk of infection is directly related to the presence of its vector. Thereby it is important to know their distribution, which is strongly associated with environmental factors: the presence and availability of a suitable habitat, of a suitable climate and of hosts. The present study models the habitat suitability for Ixodes ricinus in Ireland, where data on tick distribution are scarce. Tick habitat suitability was estimated at a coarse scale (10 km) with a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method according to four different scenarios (depending on the variables used and on the weights granted to each of them). The western part of Ireland and the Wicklow mountains in the East were estimated to be the most suitable areas for I. ricinus in the island. There was a good level of agreement between results from the MCDA and recorded tick presence. The different scenarios did not affect the spatial outputs substantially. The current study suggests that tick habitat suitability can be mapped accurately at a coarse scale in a data-scarce context using knowledge-based methods. It can serve as a guideline for future countrywide sampling that would help to determine local risk of tick presence and refining knowledge on tick habitat suitability in Ireland. 相似文献

Despite the importance of roe deer as a host for Ixodes ticks in central Europe, estimates of total tick burden on roe deer are not available to date. We aimed at providing (1) estimates of life stage and sex specific (larvae, nymphs, males and females, hereafter referred to as tick life stages) total Ixodes burden and (2) equations which can be used to predict the total life stage burden by counting the life stage on a selected body area. Within a period of 1½ years, we conducted whole body counts of ticks from 80 hunter-killed roe deer originating from a beech dominated forest area in central Germany. Averaged over the entire study period (winter 2007–summer 2009), the mean tick burden per roe deer was 64.5 (SE ± 10.6). Nymphs were the most numerous tick life stage per roe deer (23.9 ± 3.2), followed by females (21.4 ± 3.5), larvae (10.8 ± 4.2) and males (8.4 ± 1.5). The individual tick burden was highly aggregated (k = 0.46); levels of aggregation were highest in larvae (k = 0.08), followed by males (k = 0.40), females (k = 0.49) and nymphs (k = 0.71). To predict total life stage specific burdens based on counts on selected body parts, we provide linear equations. For estimating larvae abundance on the entire roe deer, counts can be restricted to the front legs. Tick counts restricted to the head are sufficient to estimate total nymph burden and counts on the neck are appropriate for estimating adult ticks (females and males). In order to estimate the combined tick burden, tick counts on the head can be used for extrapolation. The presented linear models are highly significant and explain 84.1, 77.3, 90.5, 91.3, and 65.3% (adjusted R 2) of the observed variance, respectively. Thus, these models offer a robust basis for rapid tick abundance assessment. This can be useful for studies aiming at estimating effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tick abundance, modelling tick population dynamics, modelling tick-borne pathogen transmission dynamics or assessing the efficacy of acaricides. 相似文献

The parasitism of Ixodes loricatus Neumann on white-eared opposum, Didelphis albiventris Lund, was analysed in the southern ranges of both. In central Argentina, 118 wild opossums were captured from 2005 to 2012. Adults of I. loricatus were collected (prevalence?=?66.1%, mean?=?7.03, median?=?4), but no immature stage. Tick infestation was not affected by sex (p?=?0.27) or age (p?=?0.37) of hosts. In line with previous studies about seasonality of larvae and nymphs of I. loricatus, adult tick infestation showed no seasonal trend. This lack of seasonal pattern of infestation for all parasitic stages of I. loricatus may indicate a life cycle governed by nidicolous behaviour, in such a way that this habit would contribute to minimize the influence of external environmental variables. The tick sex ratio was female biased, with two females per one male (p?=?0.002). The absence of I. loricatus immatures on D. albiventris suggests that in the study region there is clear segregation of immatures in rodents and adults in marsupials. 相似文献

Hemocytes of two tick species, Ixodes ricinus and Ornithodoros moubata, were investigated with the aim to determine their ultrastructural characteristics and developmental relationships. Only a limited number of ultrastructural features was shown to be unequivocally homological across all hemocyte types. The two species, representing distant groups of ticks, differ in the composition of their circular cell populations. In I. ricinus, three groups of distinct morphological types of hemocytes could be determined according to well-defined ultrastructural features: a typical non-phagocytic granular cell with electron-dense granula and homogeneous cytoplasm (Gr II), and two different types of phagocytic hemocytes, namely plasmatocytes with a low number of granula and phagocytic granolocytes, designated as Gr I. In contrast, an additional cell type resembling insect spherulocytes was determined in O. moubata. This cell type does not seem to be homologous to any I. ricinus hemocyte and may represent a cell type typical of soft ticks only. Possible ontogenetic lineages of the hemocytes of both tick-species were inferred. 相似文献

The mechanical properties of the cuticle of Ixodes pacificus (Ip) are compared to those of Amblyomma hebraeum (Ah) from our earlier work. The 10-fold size difference between the species is expected to lead to significant differences in mechanical properties, because cuticular stretch depends on high internal hydrostatic pressure during the rapid phase of engorgement. We demonstrate here: (1) The cuticle of partially fed Ip is less stiff and viscous than that of Ah. (2) A stretch-recoil cycle in both ticks consists of recoverable deformation (ESv) and permanent deformation (ESp); ESp is higher in Ip, and increases sharply during the slow phase of engorgement, but not in Ah. (3) Injected dopamine (DA) increases ESp and reduces all measures of stiffness and viscosity, suggesting that a catecholaminergic neurotransmitter plays a fundamental role in modulating mechanical properties of the cuticle. However, unlike Ah, DA’s effect was not different from that of the control (1.2% NaCl). Mere insertion of the needle may have punctured the gut, causing the release of perhaps a catecholamine that increases ESp, an hypothesis supported by the fact that inserting a needle without any injection also caused an increase in ESp. (4) Stretch reduces ESp, but subjecting loops to pH 6.5 in vitro restores it. (5) Despite the smaller size of Ip, later onset of the rapid phase of engorgement, a thinner cuticle and different mechanical properties all reduce the internal pressure needed for stretch. 相似文献

The first finding of a questing Hyalomma marginatum marginatum female tick in Germany is described. The tick was found in May 2006 on the clothing of a person who had spent the preceding
day in rural surroundings in southern Germany. As the infested person had also been visiting Spain where H. m. marginatum is known to occur some weeks prior to finding the tick, it is not clear whether the tick had been imported by him as a female
or by another host in a preimaginal stage and succeeded to develop to an adult in Germany. H. m. marginatum is a thermophilic tick species usually occurring in relatively dry and warm regions of southern Europe, northern Africa and
some parts of Asia. It is a vector of several disease agents of human relevance including Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
virus. Although, by PCR examination, the female was found neither infected with this virus nor with Rickettsia aeschlimannii, another human pathogen which has been found in Spanish Hyalomma ticks, its mere finding should be taken seriously and draw further attention to the increasing problem of the import and
spread of putatively tropical vectors of disease to central Europe. 相似文献

Unfed adult Amblyomma americanum were exposed to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. Ticks exposed to the fungus exhibited reduced survival and increased water loss as indicated by change in weight. Treated
ticks survived 7.2 ± 0.22 days (mean ± SE) and controls survived 17.9 ± 0.73 days (P = 0.01; df = 57). At death, ticks exposed to the fungus had lost 25.2 ± 0.84% of their starting weight; control ticks had lost 14.1 ± 0.85%
of their starting weight (P = 0.01; df = 96). Water loss was highest immediately following inoculation, although losses continued to be higher than in uninoculated
ticks. This suggests that fungal penetration causes sufficient cuticle damage to cause desiccation, although other water-loss
avenues exist, including increased time of spiracular opening. Additionally this study did not eliminate the possibility of
a negative impact on water vapor uptake. This is the first study to investigate the effect of an entomopathogenic fungus on
the water balance of a tick. 相似文献

Although the population dynamics of the tick Ixodes ricinus are relatively well studied, those of other Western European tick species are largely unknown. Moreover, there is very little
information related to the interactions between I. ricinus and other ticks. Such knowledge, however, is of special interest in respect to the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens such
as Borrelia spp. We compared the dynamics of the generalist I. ricinus with the nest-dwelling hedgehog specialist, I. hexagonus. Both species were collected from hedgehogs from a naturally infested experimental population between 2006 and 2008. Ticks
were collected once a month from March to October from each hedgehog counted and the life history stage and species determined.
All hedgehogs harboured both tick species. Nymphs, females and males of I. ricinus showed clear bimodal seasonal distributions with peaks in spring and autumn, while larvae peaked only in summer. The density
of I. hexagonus life stages was low during the whole investigation period and seasonal fluctuations of population density were much weaker
compared to I. ricinus. Nymphs and larvae showed comparatively little change in population size and no consistent period of peak density. Females
showed a single peak in summer and males were found only occasionally on hedgehogs. We suggest density-dependent mechanisms
regulating the population density of the specialist I. hexagonus but not of the generalist I. ricinus. 相似文献

The immature stages of the Neotropical tick Ixodes (Ixodes) pararicinus Keirans & Clifford, 1985 are described from specimens in a laboratory colony initiated from engorged females collected on cattle and larvae fed on mice and chickens. The larva and nymph of I. pararicinus are described using SEM micrographs as well as drawings for some features of the larva. Additionally, immature stages of I. pararicinus collected on wild mice and birds in Uruguay and Argentina were compared with specimens from the laboratory colony. A taxonomic key to the nymphs of the species of the ricinus complex established in the Western Hemisphere is presented. The distribution of I. pararicinus comprises Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay, but it is also probably established in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Peru. Most adult ticks of this species have been found on introduced domestic artiodactyles, although Neotropical deer species must have been the ancestral host. Larvae and nymphs of I. pararicinus have also been found on sigmodontine rodents and passeriform birds. Although I. pararicinus is a member of the ricinus complex, which contains the main vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), there are few studies concerning its potential for pathogen transmission. 相似文献

Callicarpenal (13, 14, 15, 16-tetranor-3-cleroden-12-al) and intermedeol [(4S,5S,7R,10S)-eudesm-11-en-4-ol], isolated from American beautyberry, Callicarpa americana (Lamiaceae), were evaluated in laboratory bioassays for repellent activity against host-seeking nymphs of the blacklegged
tick, Ixodes scapularis, and lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum. A strip of organdy cloth treated with test solution was doubly wrapped (treatment on outer layer) around the middle phalanx
of a forefinger and ticks released on the fingertip. Callicarpenal and intermedeol, at 155 nmole/cm2 cloth repelled 98 and 96% of I. scapularis nymphs, respectively. Dose response tests with I. scapularis nymphs showed no difference in repellency among callicarpenal, intermedeol and Deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), however, SS220 ((1S,2′S)-2-methylpiperidinyl-3-cyclohexene-1-carboxamide) was significantly more repellent than the other compounds. Callicarpenal,
at 155 nmole/cm2 cloth, repelled 100 and 53.3% of I. scapularis nymphs at 3 and 4 h, respectively, after the cloth was treated, whereas intermedeol repelled 72.5% of I. scapularis nymphs 3 h after treatment. In comparison with the results obtained with I. scapularis, callicarpenal, intermedeol, Deet and SS220 were less effective against A. americanum. Only intermedeol and SS220 repelled significantly more A. americanum than ethanol controls at 155 nmole compound/cm2 cloth. At 1,240 nmole/cm2 cloth, callicarpenal and intermedeol repelled 20 and 40% of A. americanum nymphs. 相似文献
