Summary Samples, collected from 1959 to 1970, were used to describe the distribution and ecology of some oligochaetes in the Delta region. In the brackish and marine parts of the estuary the following species were found;Tubifex costatus, T. pseudogaster, Peloscolex benedeni andMonopylephorus rubroniveus. The other identified species were more or less euryhaline-freshwater organisms. The distribution pattern of these species was correlated with salinity and sediment. The species had a wider chlorinity tolerance than reported in the literature. The preference ofPeloscolex benedeni for clay sediments was due to low oxygen or hydrogensulfide conditions in the sediment.Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri preferred well sorted muddy sand bottoms andL. udekemianus less well sorted clay bottoms.Tubifex costatus occurred abundantly in intertidal regions. The occurrence of most of the collected oligochaetes was positively correlated with the quantity of organic matter in the sediment. An investigation carried out from 1971 to 1977 to study the development of the macrofaunal community in the fresh Haringvliet-Hollands Diep basin after closure of this basin showed a mass development of Tubificidae. This was related to the high organic matter content in the bottom and the high colonization and reproductive capacity of these worms. It appeared that several species of tubificids coexisted for several years in the same habitat at a roughly constant relative abundance. Several investigators showed a selective feeding of tubificids on certain groups of bacteria. A niche delimitation probably exists through the nature of the food used by these tubificids.A detailed account of the results presented here will be given elsewhere.  相似文献

Summary In 1981, 16 brackish inland waters on the Dutch island of Texel were sampled qualitatively for macrofauna. The sampling stations consisted of ditches, small canals and isolated ponds. They were clustered according to their species composition. It appeared that the major fauna differences are closely related to the occurrence of present or past connections of the locality with other water bodies and to the origin and development of a habitat. The distribution of the macrofauna taxa was compared with differences in average chlorinity and variation in chlorinity between the habitats studied. Relations between the number and kind of species and chlorinity were also investigated. It was found that chlorinity cannot be regarded as a master factor affecting the fauna distribution. Hence, it is concluded that, within the range of the mesopolyhalinicum, environmental and historical factors, rather than chlorinity, have to be regarded as the most discriminating abiotic factors determining the species composition in brackish inland waters.  相似文献

The zooplankton fauna of the Zeeschelde estuary (Belgium) wasinvestigated over 10 months by means of monthly sampling. CanonicalCorrespondence Analysis (CCA) was used to relate the speciesdistribution to environmental factors. The variation in thespecies data was significantly (P < 0.05) related to a setof 10 environmental variables (chlorinity, NH4+, temperature,PO4-P-, DW, Chl a and Chl b, NO2-N, NO3-N and pH). The mainspatial and seasonal gradients were associated with chlorinityand temperature respectively. The brackish water zone was dominatedby the calanoid Eurytemora affinis in spring, succeeded by Acartiatonsa and mysid species during summer. In the freshwater transect, cyclopoids dominated, together with several cladoceran species.Thermophilic cyclopoid species (Thermocyclops oithonoides, Th.crassus and Mesocyclops leuckarti) occurred during periods ofmaximal temperature. The cyclopoids Acanthocyclops robustus,Paracyclops poppei and Cyclops vicinus, the cladocerans Daphnialongispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Bosmina longirostris togetherwith the numerically dominant rotifers, oligochaetes, nematodesand juvenile copepods seemed little affected by environmentalgradients.  相似文献

Actinospore infection of oligochaetes living in the mud and on the roots of vegetation in an inflow brook of a Hokkaido salmon hatchery was studied within the framework of a Japanese-Hungarian research program. Two triactinomyxon types, 1 echinactinomyxon, and 1 neoactinomyxum type were isolated from the oligochaete Rhyacodrilus komarovi Timm, 1990 collected during the survey. The aurantiactinomyxons were recorded over a period of 3 mo starting from the day after oligochaete collection. The oligochaetes released actinospores for several weeks from the first day of the study. Spore excretion of individual oligochaetes was not synchronous. Of the oligochaetes examined, 0.7, 7, 3 and 3%, were infected with the echinactinomyxon, neoactinomyxum and the 2 types of triactinomyxon spores, respectively. Actinospore infection was intense in the positive oligochaetes in all 4 types. Of the 4 actinospore types presented here, 3 are described for the first time.  相似文献

The macrofauna of small isolated brackish waters on a barrier island in the Dutch Wadden Sea was sampled qualitatively. An attempt was made to correlate species composition and species richness to chlorinity characteristics and to data on the water regime of the localities studied. It is shown that the observed differences in the macrofauna cannot be explained by differences in chlorinity only. Present and former connections to other water bodies seem equally important.  相似文献

Summary Determinations for sulphate, bromide content and the alkalinity of Lake Maryût water were carried out at six stations during the four seasons of 1966. The sulphate chlorinity ratio increases with the decrease of chlorinity. It has an average of 0.2649 which is higher than the ratio of 0.1395 for sea water and lower than the ratio for river waters. Regional variations in the SO4/Cl ratio are attributed to the effect of drainage water which have a high sulphate content. The average bromine chlorinity ratio 0.00360 is compared with 0.00348 for sea water. The seasonal and regional variation of the Br/Cl ratio is less significant than the SO4/Cl ratio. The specific alkalinity decreases with the increase of chlorinity. The average specific alkalinity for the lake water is 3.20 which is higher than that for sea water, (0.126), and lower than that for river waters.  相似文献

Aquatic oligochaetes are abundant in polluted areas and are, therefore, commonly used as bioindicators to study organic pollution in rivers and streams. In order to develop a species-level oligochaete biotic index to reflect the River Pollution Index (RPI) in the Taichung Water Basin in Taiwan, we conducted a systematic sampling scheme to collect aquatic oligochaetes from the sediment samples of watercourses in the Taichung Water Basin, Taiwan. We evaluated the relationships between aquatic oligochaetes and the sewage pollution using statistical methods. The distribution of aquatic oligochaetes in relation to environmental variables, such as water quality and sediment characteristics of the regional urban contaminated streams was expressed by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). We identified 17 species of aquatic oligochaetes (Annelida, Clitellata) including 3 species of Tubificidae, 13 species of Naididae, and 1 species of Enchytraeidae from the watercourses of an urban region in the Taichung Water Basin in Taiwan, during the summer and winter of 2005 and 2006. A positive correlation was found between the total abundance of aquatic oligochaetes and the RPI (r = 0.58, P < 0.05). However, only population density of the most abundant tubificid, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, increased with increasing RPI values and a significantly negative correlation was found between the population density of the naidid, Nais communis, and RPI values. The results of CCA indicated that certain naidids, such as Aulophorus furcatus and Allonais gwaliorensis also tolerated extremely polluted environments in upper stream or stony habitats, implying that tubificids should not be the sole representation of simple biotic indices but should also include pollution-tolerant naidids. We found that the community structure of aquatic oligochaetes was influenced by short-term variations in microhabitat rather than according to seasonal factors in our study region. The results proved that aquatic oligochaetes were sensitive enough to provide a supplement for the regional urban pollution assessment applications for biotic indicators at the species-level.  相似文献

Egg development of Eustrongylides tubifex (Nitzsch in Rudolphi, 1819) J?gerski?ld, 1909, was studied at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 C. Eggs developed at 20, 25, and 30 C. Development ceased at 0, 5, 10, and 15 C but resumed when temperatures were raised. Eggs contained first-stage larvae in 23-26 days at 25 C. Seven species of aquatic oligochaetes were exposed experimentally to eggs of E. tubifex containing first-stage larvae. Third-stage larvae of E. tubifex developed in the aquatic oligochaetes, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparède, 1862, and Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774). Larvae developed in the ventral blood vessel of oligochaetes. Second-stage larvae were seen first in oligochaetes 30 days postinfection and third-stage larvae were seen 70-109 days postinfection at 25 C. Third-stage larvae in oligochaetes retained the cuticle of the first and second molt.  相似文献

Actinospore infection of oligochaetes living in the mud of 3 freshwater biotopes in Japan was studied. Using the cell-well plate method, a new aurantiactinomyxon type was found in 0.77% of the examined Tubifex tubifex oligochaete specimens from a brook near Yamanashi Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station on Fuji Mountain. In 0.14% of Lumbriculus variagetus collected from Chitose River, near Chitose Salmon Hatchery, a new siedleckiella type was found, while at the same time 8.1% of the Lumbriculus spp. oligochaetes released triactinomyxons of Myxobolus arcticus. Of the examined Rhyacodrilus komarovi oligochaetes collected from the Mena River system, Hokkaido, 0.2, 0.6, 0.5 and 0.8% were infected with echinactinomyxon, neoactinomyxum and 2 types of triactinomyxon spores, respectively, and described in our previous paper. The oligochaetes released actinospores for several weeks. Actinospore infection showed high intensity in positive oligochaetes in the case of all the actinosporean types. Two of the actinospore types (aurantiactinomyxon and siedleckiella) presented here have not been previously described.  相似文献

The development of Myxobolus macrocapsularis Reuss, 1906, a myxosporean parasite of the gills of common bream Abramis brama L., was studied in experimentally infected oligochaetes. In 3 experiments uninfected Tubifex tubifex Muller and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Claparéde) were exposed to mature myxospores of M. macrocapsularis. In all experiments, typical triactinospores developed in T. tubifex specimens but no infection was found in L. hoffmeisteri. Triactinospores were released from oligochaetes 66 to 99 d after initial exposure. At that time pansporocysts containing 8 triactinospores were located in the gut epithelium of experimental oligochaetes, but free actinosporean stages were also found in the gut lumen of the oligochaetes. Each triactinospore had 3 pyriform polar capsules and a barrel-shaped sporoplasm with 32 secondary cells. The spore body joined the 3 caudal projections with a stout style.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. A study of the diet of E. octoculata (L) and H. stagnalis (L) using a serological technique was carried out in a lot ic habitat subject to organic pollution and seasonal sewage fungus growth.
2. The results indicate that E. octoculata consumed predominantly Chironomidae and Oligochaeta, while H. stagttalis had a less pronounced prey preference, consuming rather similar proportions of chironomids, oligochaetes, Asellus and gastropod snails.
3. At enriched sites, E. ocioculata consumed relatively more chironomids and fewer oligochaetes, while H. stagnalis took more gastropods and fewer chironomids.
4. Seasonal differences were noted in the diet of both leeches with chironomids predominating chiefly from April to August, and molluscs, oligochaetes and Asellus at other times of the year. Intra-specific differences (on a weight-age basis) were only seen for E. octoculata , small forms consuming chiefly oligochaetes and larger ones concentrating on chironomids.  相似文献

Actinospore infection of oligochaetes collected from the mud of 2 freshwater biotopes in Portugal was studied. Using the 'cell-well plate method', a new synactinomyxon type was found in 2 specimens (1.3%) of the examined Tubifex tubifex oligochaetes from the River Sousa north of Porto, Portugal. In Criodrilus lacuum and Dero digitata specimens collected from the same river, no actinosporeans were released during the 12 wk observation period. Infected oligochaetes were only found immediately post-collection, and no further actinosporean release was recorded in Tubifex specimens kept alive for several weeks. Actinospore infection showed high intensity in oligochaetes in both positive cases. No actinosporean stages of myxosporeans have as yet been described from Portugal. On the basis of spore morphology and 18S rDNA sequence data, the synactinomyxon type presented in this paper differs from those already known and described in the literature.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, 2 modes of transmission of Eustrongylides ignotus (Nematoda: Dioctophymatoidea) to fish were identified. Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) became infected after ingestion of either eggs of E. ignotus containing first-stage larvae or aquatic oligochaetes (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri) containing third-stage larvae of E. ignotus. After removal from the uterus of gravid E. ignotus females and incubation for 17-28 days, depending on temperature, it was found that parasite eggs contained first-stage larvae that were infective to fish and oligochaetes. Larvae developed to the third stage in oligochaetes and were infective to fish 35-77 days postinfection (PI) and when fed to fish, developed to the fourth stage between 127 and 184 days PI. Eggs containing first-stage larvae fed directly to fish developed to the fourth stage between 84 and 105 days PI. The amount of time for development from the undifferentiated egg to the fourth-stage larva was 78-156 days shorter when fish ingested eggs containing first-stage larvae than when fish ingested oligochaetes containing third-stage larvae. Three species of large piscivorous fish, including black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and warmouth (Lepomis gulosus), were fed mosquitofish containing fourth-stage larvae. At necropsy, live E. ignotus larvae were recovered from all 3 species. Several fish had multiple infections after ingesting > 1 larva, indicating that bioaccumulation of the parasite in the food chain may occur.  相似文献

A total of 63,451 fish, representing 39 species, was collected from 176 foraging sites used by ciconiiform wading birds in peninsular Florida (USA) and examined for larvae of Eustrongylides ignotus. Infected fish were identified from 30 (17%) of the sites, all of which had been altered by human disturbance such as removal of sediment to construct ditches and dikes, improve water flow, or increase storage capacity and had a history of receiving anthropogenic nutrients such as sewage effluent, urban runoff, or agricultural runoff. The mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) and several species of sunfish (Centrarchidae) were the most important intermediate hosts. Infected fish were not collected at any of the unaltered sites. A total of 10,508 oligochaetes (representing 36 species) was identified from 22 sites that had fish infected with E. ignotus and 36 sites where no infected fish were collected. None of the oligochaetes was infected with larvae of E. ignotus. Immature tubificids without hair setae (probably Limnodrilus sp.), Dero digitata, and L. hoffmeisteri were the most abundant oligochaetes at sites where infected fish occurred, making up 78% of the total collected. Compared to unaltered sites, altered sites were characterized by higher mean densities of fish and oligochaetes; surface waters with decreased dissolved oxygen and increased total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a; sediments with higher soil oxygen demand and total phosphorus; larger grain sizes; and higher percentage emergent vegetation and grasses.  相似文献

The Forth estuary is a major estuary on the east coast of Scotland; it receives effluent from domestic and industrial (petro-chemical and distilling) sources. Following a study on the distribution of the macrofauna of the intertidal areas in relation to pollution (McLusky et al., 1978), this paper is concerned with the distribution and abundance of aquatic oligochaetes and the small polychaeteManayunkia aestuarina in relation to estuarine salinity, organic enrichment, and industrial effluent. In the most polluted parts of the estuary oligochaetes are the sole inhabitants of the mudflats; in other less polluted flats they are very abundant. In the least polluted parts the numbers of oligochaetes diminish as the numbers and diversity of macrofauna increase. Estimates of the production of oligochaetes are given.  相似文献

The content of heavy metals in the bodies of oligochaetes in two small rivers that flow along the central part of a large industrial city has been studied. It has been established that the concentration of mobile (bioavailable) forms of metals in oligochaetes is higher than that in bottom sediments. The similarity of the pattern of accumulation of pollutants in the bodies of oligochaetes and the correlation of heavy metals with the organic matter of river sediments has been revealed in both urban watercourses.  相似文献

Summary The concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in Lake Maryût water are determined at six stations representing the different regions of the lake during the year 1966. The sodium content varies seasonally and regionally with an annual average value of 1.0332 g/kg. The potassium content varies also seasonally and regionally following the sodium variation, with an annual average content of 0.0585 g/kg. The potassium concentration in the lake water forms about 4.5% that of sodium, compared with 3.6% in sea water and 21.6% in fresh water. The average Na/Cl ratio varies between a maximum in autumn and a minimum in summer. Contrary to the Na/Cl ratio, the K/Cl ratio is more or less correlated with salinity variations where it increases in summer and decreases in winter. The annual average Na/Cl ratio of 0.6345 for the lake water is higher than the average ratio of 0.5555 given for sea water. The K/Cl ratio has an annual average value of 0.0339 which is again higher than the average ratio of 0.0208 for sea water. The sodium and potassium chlorinity ratios decrease with the increase of chlorinity. The calcium content in the lake water reaches its maximum in summer and its minimum in autumn with an annual average content of 0.0549 g/kg. The Ca/Cl ratio for the lake water has an average value of 0.0335 which is higher than the ratio of 0.02126 for oceanic water. It increases by the increase of chlorinity and subsequently follows the salinity variation in the lake water. It also varies regionally following the distribution of carbonates in the bottom sediments. The magnesium content in the lake water has an annual average of 0.1201 g/kg. The Mg/Cl ratio increases by the increase of chlorinity, with an annual average value of 0.0733 which is higher than the average ratio of 0.06692 for sea water. Similar to calcium, the Mg/Cl ratio follows more or less the seasonal variation of salinity. The Mg/Cl ratio varies slightly from one region to another, with a slight westward increase in the lake. The average Mg/Cl ratios are the same at the six stations and the annual average ratio is 0.0733.  相似文献

The role of oligochaetes in the management of waters   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
To better understand the role of an aquatic oligochaete in the management of water quality, it was determined if oligochaetes were representative of water quality, if indices based on oligochaetes were widely applicable to access water quality, and if oligochaete assemblages were related to environmental factors other than organic pollution. It was found that if only one monitoring sample a year was taken in December, about 73% of the more common species were collected. Seasonality did not seem to affect the taxa collected except for forms in low presence, e.g., Nais. Several indices we used were not applicable to regulated streams. Oligochaete ordination procedures revealed only a partial picture of the environmental conditions of regulated streams.  相似文献

Aquatic oligochaetes are well recognized bioindicators of quality of sediments and water in watercourses and lakes. However, the difficult taxonomic determination based on morphological features compromises their more common use in eco-diagnostic analyses. To overcome this limitation, we investigated molecular barcodes as identification tool for broad range of taxa of aquatic oligochaetes. We report 185 COI and 52 ITS2 rDNA sequences for specimens collected in Switzerland and belonging to the families Naididae, Lumbriculidae, Enchytraeidae and Lumbricidae. Phylogenetic analyses allowed distinguishing 41 lineages separated by more than 10 % divergence in COI sequences. The lineage distinction was confirmed by Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD) method and by ITS2 data. Our results showed that morphological identification underestimates the oligochaete diversity. Only 26 of the lineages could be assigned to morphospecies, of which seven were sequenced for the first time. Several cryptic species were detected within common morphospecies. Many juvenile specimens that could not be assigned morphologically have found their home after genetic analysis. Our study showed that COI barcodes performed very well as species identifiers in aquatic oligochaetes. Their easy amplification and good taxonomic resolution might help promoting aquatic oligochaetes as bioindicators for next generation environmental DNA biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Actinospore infection of oligochaetes collected from the mud of 2 freshwater biotopes in South Africa was studied. Using the 'cell-well plate method', a new aurantiactinomyxon type was found in 1.1% of the examined Branchiura sowerbyi oligochaete specimens from the Rietvlei River, north of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. In 1.5% of B. sowerbyi collected in a pond (Padda Dam), near the Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburg, the same aurantiactinomyxon type was found. Infected oligochaetes were found only after collection and no actinosporean release was recorded in Branchiura specimens kept alive for several weeks. Actinospore infection showed a high intensity in oligochaetes in both positive cases. Until now, no actinosporean stages of myxosporeans have been described from South Africa. The aurantiactinospore type presented in this communication differs from the known types already described in the literature.  相似文献
