Injury to the lacrimal gland following fracture of the zygomatic complex is a rare occurrence. Recently, we have observed three cases of herniation of the lacrimal gland between the diastased frontal and zygomatic bone ends. We present these cases, postulate a mechanism for this phenomenon, and advocate open reduction and internal fixation in the primary management of severe distraction.  相似文献

The anatomy and functional morphology of the large hermaphroditic duct of three species of gastropod mollusc (Aplysia californica, A. dactylomela, and A. brasiliana) were examined. Each duct is composed of two parallel compartments, the red hemiduct (RHD) and the white hemiduct (WHD), which are distinguishable from the outside of the duct. Four secretory regions, all exocrine in morphology, are recognizable: the RHD secretory epithelium, the atrial gland (or atrial gland-like epithelium), the WHD secretory epithelium, and the accessory gland of the copulatory duct (AGCD). Of these regions, only the atrial gland (or atrial gland-like epithelium) contains egglaying activity and only the atrial gland (or atrial gland-like epithelium) is immunocytochemically labeled by serum antibodies generated against low molecular weight A. californica atrial gland peptides. The RHD is the functional oviduct: the egg cordon passes through a channel lined by the RHD secretory epithelium and bordered by the atrial gland (or atrial gland-like epithelium); the eggs are separated from both the WHD secretory epithelium and the AGCD by internal folds of the duct. The WHD is the functional copulatory duct: the penis, exogenous sperm, and endogenous sperm pass directly by the AGCD and in close proximity to the WHD secretory epithelium; they are separated from both the RHD secretory epithelium and the atrial gland (or atrial gland-like epithelium) by internal folds. The atrial gland (or atrial gland-like epithelium) is thus not likely to have a prostatic function or to be directly stimulated by the penis during copulation; it may play a role in oviductal function.  相似文献

 The primordia of the sclerites associated with the venom gland appear in third-stage larvae. The study aims to link the structure and function of this specialised venom structure in Formicinae, together with glandular ontogeny, and puts emphasis on the relevance of the distinguished glandular subunits contributing to the final secretion. The most conspicuous changes in glandular development occur in the pharate pupa. At this stage, all subunits of the venom gland (the tubule, the convoluted gland and reservoir) are visibly present. Formation of the glandular cuticle starts around day 4 of the pupal stage. Luminal cells in the convoluted gland are provided with abundant free ribosomes and apical microvilli that remain during adult life. Stacks of granular endoplasmic reticulum are also frequently found in these cells. The convoluted gland contains relatively few scattered secretory cells, belonging to type 3 according to Noirot and Quennedey (1974), which contain electron-dense material in their extracellular spaces during adult life. These cells strongly contrast with the apparently general non-glandular nature of the convoluted gland tubule. Histochemical investigation of the secretory cells in the pulvinate convoluted gland reveals that these cells contain lipoid material, most likely to correspond with lipoids demonstrated in earlier chemical analyses. This lipoidal material in minor quantities strongly contrasts with the bulk of acid constituting the secretion. The substances produced in the convoluted gland could act as insulators, thus protecting the insect against its corrosive venom. Accepted: 28 April 1998  相似文献

In the present study, we examined the morphological features of the adrenal gland in Bactrian camel by means of digital anatomy, light and electron microscopy. Our findings testified that the gland was divided into three parts, capsule, cortex and medulla from outside to inside as other mammals, and the cortex itself was further distinguished into four zones: zona glomerulosa, zona intermedia, zona fasciculate and zona reticularis. Notably, the zona intermedia could be seen clearly in the glands from females and castrated males, whereas it was not morphologically clear in male. There was a great deal of lipid droplets in the zona fasciculate, while it was fewer in the zona glomerulosa and zona reticularis. The cytoplasm of adrenocortical cell contained rich mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The adrenal medulla was well-developed with two separations of external and internal zones. The most obvious histological property of adrenal medulla cells were that they contained a huge number of electron-dense granules enveloped by the membrane, and so medulla cells could be divided into norepinephrine cells and epinephrine cells. Moreover, the cortical cuffs were frequently present in adrenal gland. Results of this study provides a theoretical basis necessary for ongoing investigations on Bactrian camels and their good adaptability in arid and semi-arid circumstances.  相似文献

Social insects possess a rich set of exocrine organs producing diverse pheromones and defensive compounds. This is especially true for termite imagoes, which are equipped with several glands producing, among others, sex pheromones and defensive compounds protecting imagoes during the dispersal flight and colony foundation. Here, we describe the clypeal gland, a new termite exocrine organ occurring in the labro-clypeal region of imagoes of most Rhinotermitidae, Serritermitidae and Termitidae species. The clypeal gland of Coptotermes testaceus consists of class 1 (modified epidermal cell) and class 3 (bicellular gland unit) secretory cells. Ultrastructural features suggest that the gland secretes volatile compounds and proteins, probably after starting the reproduction. One peculiar feature of the gland is the presence of multiple secretory canals in a single canal cell, a feature never observed before in other insect glands. Although the function of the gland remains unknown, we hypothesize that it could produce secretion signalling the presence of functional reproductives or their need to be fed.  相似文献

Light- and electron-microscopic features of pigmented cells in the cat pineal gland are described. These cells were observed throughout postnatal life from the second postnatal day to the oldest cats studied (up to 13 years old). No apparent relationship was observed among the amount of pigment and the animal age or sex. Pigmented cells showed a preferential localization at the ventral surface of the pineal gland near its distal end. The pineal pigment was histochemically identified as melanin. Pineal pigment granules showed ultrastructural features similar to melanocyte melanin granules.  相似文献

The salivary gland of adult Calliphora erythrocephala is a tubular structure composed of secretory, reabsorptive, and duct regions. Development of these structures has been followed during the six days of larval and ten days of pupal growth. Two small groups of imaginal cells located at the junction between larval gland and duct give rise to the adult gland. These presumptive adult cells divide during all larval stages and appear to be functional components of the larval gland. Shortly after pupation, the larval gland breaks down and the imaginal cells proliferate rapidly, forming sequentially the duct, reabsorptive and secretory regions. Proliferating regions of the developing gland are frequently encrusted with haemocytes. As it elongates the gland establishes intimate contacts first with the basement membrane of the degenerating larval gland, later with an epithelial layer surrounding the main dorsal tracheal trunks, and then with the gut. Cell division continues until about five days after pupation, bu t the gland is unable to secrete fluid in response to 5-hydroxytryptamine stimulation until two hours after the adult fly emerges. The Golgi complex appears to be involved in forming the highly folded membranes of the canaliculi in the secretory region. Presumptive adult salivary gland cells appear to increase in number logarithmically from the time of hatching of the larva until five days after pupation. This contrasts with the development of classical imaginal discs, in which cell division ceases prior to pupation.  相似文献

The alpha 2u globulins, products of a highly homologous multigene family, are synthesized in the liver and submaxillary salivary glands of the rat. Although their precise function has not been ascertained, they are of interest because of the complex developmental and hormonal regulation of their tissue levels. We now report that alpha 2u globulin is synthesized in a third tissue of the rat, the extraorbital lachrymal gland. Immunocytochemical studies indicate that the distribution of alpha 2u globulin is more homogeneous in the lachrymal gland than in the liver or submaxillary gland. In situ hybridization to alpha 2u globulin RNA reveals specific signal only over the acinar cells of the lachrymal gland. Several different isoelectric forms of alpha 2u globulin are encoded by lachrymal gland mRNA. The major lachrymal and salivary gland isoforms are indistinguishable from one another, but more acidic than the hepatic isoforms. In addition, analysis of double-stranded cDNAs with a diagnostic restriction-enzyme pair detects no differences between the alpha 2u globulin mRNAs of lachrymal and salivary gland, but clearly distinguishes these from their hepatic counterparts. In spite of the similarity between the lachrymal and salivary gland alpha 2u globulin gene products, we find that the hormonal and developmental regulation of alpha 2u globulin expression differs markedly in these two tissues. In the liver, where a different subset of alpha 2u globulin genes is expressed, a third regulatory phenotype is observed.  相似文献

The interaction of immunological system, thyroid and pineal gland was studied in 5-week old males of Gallus domesticus. Several morphometrical parameters in pineal and thyroid glands were measured after bird immunization with human red blood cells and/or treatment with melatonin or seduxen, melatonin receptor blocker. The peak of the thyroid activity was found on Day 7 after immunization. The immune system appears to directly activate the thyroid gland only in the presence of certain level of melatonin. We suggest that the melatonin mechanism of action includes the enhancement of thyroid gland sensitivity to immune factors. Seduxen prevented the stimulatory influence of the immune system on the thyroid gland.  相似文献

The external morphology of the cuticular spines, and the ultrastructure of the spines and neck gland in fifth instar Abananote hylonome larvae was studied. The larvae are spiny along the length of their bodies. Along the length of the spines are setae with a swelling towards the apical region. Internally, in the base of each seta there is a complex of secretory cells surrounding a large vacuole continuous with the seta. The neck gland is eversible, composed of a pair of oval internal sacks connected to the exterior via an extracellular canal produced by an invagination of the cuticle. The sack cells surround a reservoir containing an amorphous substance. In both the spines and neck gland the nuclei are large and irregularly shaped, typical of defensive glands of Lepidoptera. The border of the cells adjacent to the vacuoles (spines) and the reservoir (neck gland) is made up of numerous microvilli. We suggest that defensive compounds are produced in the gland cells and then later released via the vacuoles in the spines and the extracellular canal in the neck gland.  相似文献

The cytomorphologic features of an epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma arising in the submandibular gland are reported. The aspiration smears were cellular, with two cell types present: dark cells showing attempted gland formation and clear cells with vacuolization. The clear cells frequently formed globular masses and had indistinct cytoplasmic membranes. These globular masses of clear cells were usually adjacent to the fragments of dark cells. A striking feature was the presence of numerous naked nuclei.  相似文献

The rat lacrimal apparatus includes several glands; among them, the exorbital lacrimal gland plays the central role. Its parenchyma and stroma undergo prominent morphologic changes with age. The parenchymal transformation includes metaplasia of some of its acini and their turning into Harderian gland-like structures (harderization), accumulation of gland ducts (“ductularization”), and morphologic dysplasia—cytomegaly, karyomegaly, and cell and nuclear polymorphism in the other part of acini. All these transformations are hormone-dependent and sex-specific: they more often appear in males. On the final stages of agerelated transformations, the lacrimal gland tissue is morphologically similar to a neoplasm and has neoplastic morphology but no other features of a tumor. Therefore, the rat lacrimal gland is an interesting object to study tissue and cell atypia. In the rat glandular stroma, lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis appear with age; these changes are similar to processes taking place in human lacrimal apparatus involved in the pathogenesis of senile dry eye syndrome. The spontaneous changes in the rat lacrimal gland, predominantly in male rats, can be used as a model of the human lacrimal apparatus disorders.  相似文献

Quantifying sweat gland activation provides important information when explaining differences in sweat rate between populations and physiological conditions. However, no standard technique has been proposed to measure sweat gland activation, while the reliability of sweat gland activation measurements is unknown. We examined the interrater and internal reliability of the modified-iodine paper technique, as well as compared computer-aided analysis to manual counts of sweat gland activation. Iodine-impregnated paper was pressed against the skin of 35 participants in whom sweating was elicited by exercise in the heat or infusion of methylcholine. The number of active glands was subsequently determined by computer-aided analysis. In total, 382 measurements were used to evaluate: 1) agreement between computer analysis and manual counts; 2) the interrater reliability of computer analysis between independent investigators; and 3) the internal reliability of sweat gland activation measurements between duplicate samples. The number of glands identified with computer analysis did not differ from manual counts (68 ± 29 vs. 72 ± 24 glands/cm(2); P = 0.27). These measures were highly correlated (r = 0.77) with a mean bias ± limits of agreement of -4 ± 38 glands/cm(2). When comparing computer analysis measures between investigators, values were highly correlated (r = 0.95; P < 0.001) and the mean bias ± limits of agreement was 4 ± 18 glands/cm(2). Finally, duplicate measures of sweat gland activation were highly correlated (r = 0.88; P < 0.001) with a mean bias ± limits of agreement of 3 ± 29 glands/cm(2). These results favor the use of the modified-iodine paper technique with computer-aided analysis as a standard technique to reliably evaluate the number of active sweat glands.  相似文献

Summary Some features of the structure and histochemistry of the rat parathyroid gland have been studied using a variety of histological and histochemical staining methods. The gland is composed of a compact parenchyma consisting essentially of a single cell type. The parenchyma is encapsulated by a connective tissue layer which extends into it and holds abundant branches of blood vessels. In the parenchymal cells four types of protein granules are demonstrated by the tetrazonium, DDD-diazo blue B, alkaline tetrazolium and HNAH-diazo blue B methods respectively. The DDD-diazo blue B reactive granules are considered to relate to the secretory activity of the parenchymal cells in view of their morphology and recent biochemical data on the nature of parathyroid hormone. The cytophysiological significance of the other three types of protein granules was discussed on the basis of their morphological features. Besides protein granules the parenchymal cells contain glycogen, RNA and DNA, and are reactive for alkaline phosphatase. The quantity of these substances and the enzyme activity seem to reflect to a certain extent different states of cellular activity. The parenchymal cells show scanty sudanophilic lipid content in paraffin sections and are devoid of basophilic mucopolysaccharides. Further, the cells are negative for acid phosphatase. In the connective tissue stroma of the gland the vascular endothelial cells show high alkaline phosphatase activity, and a hypothesis is presented as to the physiological significance of this high enzyme activity.  相似文献

We have generated a monoclonal antibody (mAb) 5E10 which recognizes an antigen localized to dense core vesicles (DCVs) in the atrial gland of Aplysia californica. mAb5E10 immunoprecipitates an abundant 57-kDa glycoprotein (atrial gland granule-specific antigen, AGSA) which is a soluble component of atrial gland DCVs. Electron microscopy reveals that AGSA immunoreactivity is restricted to the region between the dense core, which contains neuropeptide immunoreactivity, and the membrane of atrial gland DCVs. AGSA was purified by immunoaffinity chromatography, and the amino acid sequences of both N-terminal and internal cyanogen bromide fragments were determined. This information was used to isolate a 2.8-kilobase cDNA which encodes a 47-kDa protein. The predicted amino acid sequence contains the micro-sequenced peptides, an N-terminal hydrophobic signal sequence, and four N-linked glycosylation sites, but does not contain any significant homologies to database sequences. Northern blots and light level immunocytochemistry demonstrate that the AGSA gene is specifically expressed in the atrial gland. The identification of a protein localized to the cortex of DCVs suggests that this region has a specialized role in the function of these vesicles.  相似文献

This study examines the role of the thyroid gland in the control of reproduction in the viviparous Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina. Thyroid activity in individuals in different reproductive stages was assessed both by microscopic examination of the gland, and by analysis of circulating levels of thyroid hormones from the same individuals. The thyroid gland is a cylindric organ, embedded in a connective tissue capsule, and composed of follicles, i.e., monolayer spheres of thyroid epithelial cells. Stingray follicular cells possess several characteristic features, namely apical cilia and a well-developed endoplasmic reticulum. Cells vary in size and shape, according to the activity of the gland. No structural differences were observed between the thyroid glands of the two sexes. Both thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine, [T(3)], and thyroxine, [T(4)], were detected in the serum of all animals examined. Levels ranged from 1.3-2.6 microg/100 ml for total T(4), and from 1.2-2.6 ng/ml for total T(3). The T(4) levels did not vary significantly in any group. Immature individuals and females undergoing oogenesis had the lowest levels of circulating T(3) and mature females from ovulation throughout gestation had high thyroid gland activity and high levels of circulating T(3). A case of primary small cell undifferentiated carcinoma (SCUC) of the parotid gland, diagnosed initially by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology and confirmed by histology, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), is presented. The FNA cytologic features that enabled an accurate diagnosis of this rare salivary gland tumor included nuclear granularity and markedly angular nuclear molding of numerous small cells that were usually present as large syncytia in an inflammatory background. Numerous mitotic figures were also present in this vascular lesion. These features were also evident in the surgical specimens. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated neuron-specific enolase positivity while TEM demonstrated intracytoplasmic neurosecretory granules in this case, indicating a neuroendocrine derivation for this neoplasm instead of the more usual origin of salivary gland SCUCs in ductal epithelial or myoepithelial tissue.  相似文献

目的探讨前列腺泡沫状腺癌(prostatic foamy gland carcinoma)的临床病理特点、鉴别诊断、治疗及预后。方法观察1例前列腺泡沫状腺癌的组织学、免疫组化,并复习前列腺泡沫状腺癌相关文献。结果前列腺泡沫状腺癌的临床表现与经典型前列腺癌相似。镜下瘤细胞以其具有黄色瘤样胞浆为特征。核的异型性不明显,也常缺乏明显增大的核仁,但有结构异常、浸润性生长方式和基底细胞层消失。其假良性细胞学表现使之易被误诊为良性病变,或者使肿瘤的Gleason分级被低估。结论前列腺泡沫状腺癌是一种有侵袭性生物学行为的特殊组织学类型前列腺癌。  相似文献
