Some exotic plants are able to invade habitats and attain higher fitness than native species, even when the native species are closely related. One explanation for successful plant invasion is that exotic invasive plant species receive less herbivory or other enemy damage than native species, and this allows them to achieve rapid population growth. Despite many studies comparing herbivory and fitness of native and invasive congeners, none have quantified population growth rates. Here, we examined the contribution of herbivory to the population dynamics of the invasive species, Lespedeza cuneata, and its native congener, L. virginica, using an herbivory reduction experiment. We found that invasive L. cuneata experienced less herbivory than L. virginica. Further, in ambient conditions, the population growth rate of L. cuneata (λ = 20.4) was dramatically larger than L. virginica (λ = 1.7). Reducing herbivory significantly increased fitness of only the largest L. virginica plants, and this resulted in a small but significant increase in its population growth rate. Elasticity analysis showed that the growth rate of these species is most sensitive to changes in the seed production of small plants, a vital rate that is relatively unaffected by herbivory. In all, these species show dramatic differences in their population growth rates, and only 2% of that difference can be explained by their differences in herbivory incidence. Our results demonstrate that to understand the importance of consumers in explaining the relative success of invasive and native species, studies must determine how consumer effects on fitness components translate into population-level consequences. In order to investigate the possible effects of the ecological environment on photosynthetic activity and the major light harvesting complex, the oxygen evolution rates and composition of phycobilisome from marine red alga Porphyra yezoensis Ueda and freshwater red alga Compsopogon coeruleus (Balbis) Montagne, which could grow and reproduce under salinity up to 35 ppt, were studied. The results showed that the oxygen evolution rate of P. yezoensis in seawater was significantly higher than that of C. coeruleus in freshwater, and P. yezoensis tolerated inorganic ions at a relatively higher concentration than C. coeruleus. Moreover, the phycoerythrin (PE) of P. yezoensis was R-phycoerythrin containing α, β, and γ subunits comprised phycoerythrobilin and phycourobilin. In contrast, the PE from C. coeruleus consisted of α, β, and γ subunits comprised only phycoerythrobilin but not phycourobilin, suggesting that the PE from C. coeruleus was of a new type. Evolution has set biochemical constraints on the chemical composition of living organisms. These constraints seem to lead to increases in N : C and P : C ratios with increasing relative growth rate for all types of organisms. The N : P ratio also seems to decrease with relative growth rate for heterotrophs whereas autotrophs may show a more complex behaviour. Here I will show that, from biochemical considerations, N : C should increase linearly and P : C quadratically with relative growth rate in autotrophs with the consequence that N : P increases at low relative growth rates, passes a maximum and then decreases at high relative growth rates. These predictions are verified against observations for a freshwater alga (Selenastrum minutum) and a tree seedling (Betula pendula). Changes in temperature, light or other factors that affect the growth rate of autotrophs interact with nutrient supply in such a way that there are no simple rules for as to how N : P will change.  相似文献

The effects of low medium pH (4.50, 5.00 and 5.75) on in vitro growth and on several biochemical parameters (lipid peroxidation, proline and carbohydrate content, antioxidant enzymes activities and total soluble protein) of Plantago almogravensis and P. algarbiensis micropropagated shoots were investigated. Overall, it was observed that medium pH did not affect in vitro proliferation and rooting. Interestingly, cultures of both species modify the initial pH value to the same final value. Results have shown that the lowest pH tested induced an increase in the level of lipid peroxidation in roots of both species and in shoots of P. algarbiensis, indicating plasma membrane damage. An accumulation of carbohydrates was observed in roots of P. almogravensis cultured in pH 4.50 and 5.00. It was observed a slight response of the enzymatic system to medium pH, particularly in P. almogravensis. Based on the results obtained we can conclude that Plantago species are apt to grow in vitro in medium with pH values much lower than the usually used in tissue culture, which is in agreement with the fact that both species colonize acid soils.  相似文献

Climacostol is a resorcinol derivative that is produced by the ciliate Climacostomum virens. Exposure to purified climacostol results in lethal damage to the predatory ciliate Dileptus margaritifer and several other ciliates. To elucidate the mechanism of climacostol toxic action, we have investigated the effects of this compound on the swimming behavior of Tetrahymena thermophila and the respiratory system of isolated rat liver mitochondria. When added to living T. thermophila cells, climacostol markedly increased the turning frequency that was accompanied by a decrease in swimming velocity and subsequently by cell death. Observations by DIC and fluorescence microscopy showed morphological alterations in climacostol treated T. thermophila, indicating that climacostol might exert cytotoxic action on this organism. In the experiment with isolated rat liver mitochondria, climacostol was found to inhibit the NAD-linked respiration, but had no apparent effect on succinate-linked respiration. This finding indicates that climacostol specifically inhibits respiratory chain complex I in mitochondria. The combination of results suggest that the inhibition of mitochondrial respiration may be the cytotoxic mechanism of climacostol’s defenses against predatory protozoa.  相似文献

Both Engaeus sericatus and Cherax destructor are omnivorous crayfishes consuming a variety of food items. Materials identified in the faeces of both E. sericatus and C. destructor consisted of mainly plant material with minor amounts of arthropod animals, algae and fungi. The morphology of the gastric mill of C. destructor suggests that it is mainly involved in crushing of food material while the gastric mill of E. sericatus appears to be better suited to cutting of food material. Given this, the gastric mill of E. sericatus may be better able to cut the cellulose and hemicellulose fibres associated with fibrous plant material. In contrast, the gastric mill of C. destructor appears to be more efficient in grinding soft materials such as animal protein and algae. Both species accumulated high amounts of lipids in their midgut glands (about 60% of the dry mass) which were dominated by triacylglycerols (81–82% of total lipids). The dominating fatty acids were 16:0, 16:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9), 18:2(n-6), and 18:3(n-3). The two latter fatty acids can only be synthesised by plants, and are thus indicative of the consumption of terrestrial plants by the crayfishes. The similarity analysis of the fatty acid patterns showed three distinct clusters of plants and each of the crayfish species. The complement of digestive enzymes, proteinases, total cellulase, endo-β-1,4-glucanase, β-glucosidase, laminarinase and xylanase within midgut gland suggests that both C. destructor and E. sericatus are capable of hydrolysing a variety of substrates associated with an omnivorous diet. Higher activities of total cellulase, endo-β-1,4-glucanase and β-glucosidase indicate that E. sericatus is better able to hydrolyse cellulose within plant material than C. destructor. In contrast to E. sericatus, higher total protease and N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase activity in the midgut gland of C. destructor suggests that this species is better able to digest animal materials in the form of arthropods. Differences in total cellulase and gastric mill morphology suggest that E. sericatus is more efficient at digesting plant material than C. destructor. However, the contents of faecal pellets and the fatty acid compositions seem to indicate that both species opportunistically feed on the most abundant and easily accessible food items.  相似文献

THERE are two principal groups of theories of ageing—those which hold that random cell damage is chiefly responsible for the events characteristic of ageing, which culminate in death and those which hold that ageing and death are genetically controlled. It is too soon to decide between these points of view and in any case Bullough1 has shown that they are not mutually exclusive. 二甲双胍(metformin,MET)常用于肥胖胰岛素抵抗患者改善胰岛素抵抗降低血糖,但MET可增加脑内β-淀粉肽(β-amyloid,Aβ)表达,目前机制不清.Aβ沉积作为阿尔茨海默病(Alzheimer's disease, AD)始发病理生理学改变,在AD中发挥重要作用. 为研究MET对脑内Aβ表达的影响及机制,采用饮食诱导肥胖大鼠模型 (OB组)予MET灌胃4 W后(MET组),观察海马内Aβ42及相关因子肿瘤坏死因子α (TNF-α)、过氧化物酶体增殖物激活受体γ(peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, PPARγ)、胰岛素降解酶(insulin degrading enzyme, IDE)的表达. 结果显示,OB组大鼠血糖水平较对照组(CTL组)无明显差异,胰岛素含量明显升高(P<0.01), 并存在胰岛素抵抗;OB组大鼠海马内TNF-α、 Aβ42 水平较CTL组上调,PPARγ、IDE表达下降(P<0.05). MET组胰岛素及胰岛素抵抗均较OB组降低(P<0.05),海马内TNF-α、Aβ42表达增加(P<0.01);PPARγ,IDE表达较OB组减少(P<0.01). 上述结果提示,二甲双胍作为治疗肥胖胰岛素抵抗的一线用 药,可改善胰岛素抵抗,但增加海马内炎性因子TNF-α表达、减少PPARγ水平,降低其调控IDE转录作用,使IDE表达减少,伴随Aβ42降解减少沉积增加,从而可能增加AD发病风险.  相似文献

Coalitions influence the establishment and maintenance of social relationships among males in primate species. In this study, we compare the social behavior of males between two groups of Alouatta palliata: a group that was recently taken over by a coalition of two males (Mt), and a group that had a stable composition for at least 9 months (Rh). We predicted that coalition partners would be more cooperative and less competitive than dyads formed by immigrant and long-term resident males, and dyads formed by long-term resident males. Additionally, we predicted that these dyadic trends should be reflected in more competition and less cooperation in the group that was taken over. As predicted, the coalition partners of Mt showed the highest levels of cooperation among all dyads and the second lowest rate of agonism. Cooperation was higher in the group that had a stable composition. Results from this study suggest that the social relationships of male mantled howlers vary as a function of familiarity between males and that in the context of coalitionary takeovers, coalitionary males are highly cooperative. Cooperation is lower in groups recently taken over and competition is more intense, perhaps as a consequence of the process of establishment and reorganization of power relationships within some dyads. In the future, we must determine the frequency of coalitionary takeovers in this population and assess its ultimate consequences for male–male social relationships.  相似文献

Synurophytes are planktonic protists whose cells are covered with silica scales. According to the temperature-size rule, protists decrease in size with increasing temperature. Here, we showed that inorganic silica scales responded to increasing temperature in the same way as the cells did. Two species, Mallomonas tonsurata and Synura petersenii, were cultivated at five temperature levels (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25°C) and the methods of geometric morphometrics were applied for scale size and shape data analyses. We observed that the shape of the scales was significantly affected by the cultivation temperature. The overall shape change from rounded, circular scales to oval or more elongated scales seemed to be a general feature in synurophytes and may be considered a consequence of rising temperature. Moreover, the difference in shape remained significant even if the effect of size (allometric effect) was separated. Finally, we compared the level of the scales’ morphological variation among all temperature treatments. The results indicated that the cultivation temperature of 25°C negatively affected cellular processes involved in scale biogenesis. The use of the scale shape data has potential in palaeoecological research.  相似文献

We provide an analysis of the invasion and spread of the container inhabiting mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in the Bermuda Islands. Considered eradicated in the mid-1960s, A. aegypti was redetected in 1997, and A. albopictus was first detected in 2000. Based on weekly ovitrap data collected during the early stages of the invasion, we mapped the spread of Aedes throughout the islands. We analyzed the effects of buildings and roads on mosquito density and found a significant association between density and distance to roads, but not to buildings. We discuss the potential role of human transport in the rapid spread in the islands. The temporal correlation in ovitrap collection values decreased progressively, suggesting that habitat degradation due to control efforts were responsible for local shifts in mosquito densities. We report a sharp decrease in A. aegypti presence and abundance after the arrival of A. albopictus in the year 2000. Possible mechanisms for this rapid decline at relatively low density of the second invader are discussed in the context of classical competition theory and earlier experimental results from Florida, as well as alternative explanations. We suggest that support for the competition hypothesis to account for the decline of A. aegypti is ambiguous and likely to be an incomplete explanation.  相似文献

The differentiation of copper cells, which secrete stomach acid in Drosophila larvae, has been shown previously to be sensitive to the labialk3 mutation. Here we found that stomach acid secretion in adults was insensitive to labk3. The basis for this stage-specific effect was elucidated by characterizing the development, structure, and function of the adult midgut. First, we demonstrated by copper-dependent fluorescence and morphology that copper cells were present in the adult stomach. Fine-structure analysis of adult copper cells led to the identification of a previously unrecognized plasma membrane domain: apicolateral contacts between copper cells and their neighbors consisted of smooth septate junctions that were enriched in alphabeta-spectrin and ankyrin. Second, we demonstrated that adult copper cells were present in labk3/labvd1 (conditional/null) adults. The labial protein was expressed in adult labk3/labvd1 copper cells, but not in larvae. Thus the labk3 mutation had a stage-specific effect on midgut labial expression, but did not appear to affect protein function. Surprisingly, stomach acidification was dispensable during larval development, since labk3/labvd1 mutant larvae that lacked midgut acidification developed into fertile adults.  相似文献

We performed comparative analyses of four cross-sections of the distal radius and tibia in two species of macaque to clarify the relationships between bone morphology and locomotor type. The lengths of bones and five bone geometric properties in each section were examined and compared separately in both female and male Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis. In M. mulatta, there were no significant gender-specific differences in either the radius or the tibia. In contrast, the radius and tibia of male M. fascicularis had greater geometric parameters in the 20% and 40% positions relative to the 5% and 10% positions from the distal end than those of their female counterparts. The radius and tibia of M. mulatta were relatively longer than those of M. fascicularis, and the sectional parameters of the tibia of M. mulatta were relatively larger than those of M. fascicularis. Standardization of the log-transformed bone length between the species revealed larger radial cortical bone areas in M. fascicularis. In contrast, there were minimal differences in the tibial cortical bone areas between the two species. This study suggests that the observed distinctions in bone geometry in female and male M. fascicularis may be due to gender-specific differences in the muscle weights of the forearm and calf, which may underlie the divergence in the leaping abilities of females and males of this species. Taken together, these results of interspecies comparisons may be related to the fact that arboreal primates such as M. fascicularis undergo compressive mechanical stress due to the forelimb lead that occurs as the animal descends a sloping trunk or bridges a tree gap downward, while terrestrial primates such as M. mulatta move on nearly flat substrates. Differences in fore- and hind-limb bone properties between the two species are discussed with regard to functional morphology and locomotor type.  相似文献

Since his visit to Tierra del Fuego in the 1830s, Darwin had been fascinated by the “savages” that succeeded in surviving on such a “broken beach”, and because they were certainly similar in behaviour to our ancestors. However, he was also fascinated by baboons’ behaviour, according to Brehm's accounts: hamadryas baboons showed a strong altruism to the point of risking their own lives in order to save their infants from attack by dogs. In 1871, he mentions he would rather have descended from brave baboons than from “savages”, considered egoistic. We study the two sources of these ideas and try to show how Darwin's comparative reflections on apes and “savages” made him the first evolutionist anthropologist.  相似文献
