虫瘿是自然界极常见的生物现象,凝聚着昆虫与植物间显著、复杂而密切的协同关系。本文主要阐述了致瘿昆虫的主要类群及其在植物上的致瘿部位、虫瘿外部形态、虫瘿发育过程、虫瘿内部结构、虫瘿寄主植物多样性以及虫瘿空间分布规律等,探讨了致瘿昆虫和寄主植物间相互关系,以及影响虫瘿空间分布的环境因素等。最后对目前虫瘿生物学存在的问题及以后的研究方向进行了讨论,以期为有害虫瘿的控制和有益虫瘿的开发与利用,以及致瘿昆虫与寄主植物间协同演化关系、致瘿昆虫的致瘿机理等研究奠定一定的理论基础。  相似文献

The mechanism of gall induction by insects has remained elusive. Previous studies have met with limited success in attempting to induce galls by injection or application of chemical compounds. To determine whether an exogenous source of phytohormones plays a role in gall induction, we injected cytokinin (CK), auxin (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), and abscisic acid (ABA) in various concentrations, ratios, and combinations into leaf petioles of Capsicum annuum L. cv. California Wonder (Solanaceae). We found that CK + IAA injections lead to gall-like growth in C. annuum. GA enhanced and ABA inhibited gall growth except in the presence of GA. Isopentenyl adenine (IP) was the most effective type of CK at inducing growth. Our work is consistent with the hypothesis that exogenous CK + IAA produced and supplied by insects leads to gall induction. We hypothesize that insects have obtained the capability to induce galls via acquisition of the biosynthetic pathways to produce IAA and trans-zeatin family CKs through microbial symbiosis or lateral gene transfer.  相似文献

Five types of insect-induced galls derived from three host plant leaves were analyzed for their carotenoid (Car), chlorophyll (Chl), and Chl biosynthesis porphyrins such as protoporphyrinogen IX (PPIX), magnesium protoporphyrin (MGPP) and protochlorophyllide (Pchlide), and Chl degradation intermediates including chlorophyllide (Chlide), pheophytin (Phe), pheophorbide (Pho), and phytylated and dephytylated pigments, and compared to ungalled portions of the same leaf. Galls contain significantly lower levels of Chl-related compounds (CRCs) than ungalled portions of host leaves. The mole percent of porphyrin and the ratios of Chlide/Phe and phytylated/dephytylated pigments are both very different between galls and host leaves. We, therefore, conclude that leaf-derived gall is a kind of non-leaf green tissue, that herbivorous insects alter gall Chl biosynthesis and degradation pathways, that Mg-chelatase, Mg-dechelatase, and chlorophyllase may be the major non-lethal enzymes in galls, and that while ungalled host leaves take Chl  Phe  Pho and Chl  Chlide  Pho as the major and minor degradation routes, respectively, all galls are in contrast with the host leaves.  相似文献

As a defense mechanism of the leaves of Rhus javanica (Anacardiaceae) against the aphid Melaphis chinensis (Aphididae) attack, tannic acid is rapidly accumulated and forms galls along the midrib of the leaves resulting in a unique natural medicine Gallae Rhois. Tannic acid was found to inhibit the oxidation of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) catalyzed by tyrosinase (EC 1.14.18.1) with an IC50 of 22 microM. The aphid would detoxify the ingested toxic tannic acid to relatively nontoxic gallic acid, whereas the non-adapted pink bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella larvae are sensitive to the ingested tannic acid.  相似文献

Previous studies of the impacts of galls on host leaf photosynthesis do not suggest any general trends, with a reported range of effects from negative to positive. In this study, photosynthetic characteristics such as chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), photosynthetic capacity, and stomata conductance were determined in two types of fruit-like galls (red ovoid and green obovate galls) induced by Daphnephila taiwanensis and Daphnephila sueyenae, respectively, in order to investigate whether the number of galls affects the photosynthesis of galled leaves of Machilus thunbergii. In 2008, chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic capacity were negatively correlated with gall numbers, non-significantly and significantly, respectively, whereas stomata conductance was positively but non-significantly correlated with gall numbers. In 2009, photosynthesis capacity and stomata conductance were negatively, but non-significantly, correlated with gall numbers. Results imply that photosynthesis in M. thunbergii leaves is slightly affected by the number of cecidomyiid insect galls, and that the higher the gall number, the greater the negative effect that galls have on host leaf photosynthesis and subsequent infection.  相似文献

The nutrient tissues of oak galls accumulate a great amount of lipids. The neutral lipids (essentially triacylglycerol) are the most abundant storage form but some membrane lipids (mainly phospholipids) also occur. However, the galactolipids are very poorly represented. Among the fatty acids, oleic acid is predominant. These data correlate well with the cytological features of gall nutrient cells.  相似文献

Yeast abundance and species diversity of endophytic complexes in galls (cecidia) formed on the leaves of Salix fragilis, Salix caprea, Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, and Ulmus laevis and the epiphytic yeast communities of undamaged leaves of these plants were studied. Dynamics of yeast abundance in the galls was significantly different from that of the epiphytic yeast communities. Maximum numbers of endophytic yeast cells in the galls (up to 104 CFU/g) were comparable to abundance of epiphytic yeasts. A total of 14 species of endophytic yeasts were isolated from galls of different plants. Ascomycetous yeasts were found to predominate in the insect galls on willows and oak, while basidiomycetous yeasts dominated in mite galls on linden and elm, as well as on plant leaves. These results indicate that gall formation may be considered not only as a bidirectional pathological process of the interaction between plants and invertebrates, but also as a process in which the endophytic microbial population of the galls plays an important role.  相似文献

The baldcypress midge (Taxodiomyia cupressi and Taxodiomyia cupressiananassa) forms a gall that originates from leaf tissue. Female insects may inoculate galls with fungi during oviposition, or endophytes from the leaf tissue may grow into the gall interior. We investigated fungal diversity inside of baldcypress galls, comparing the gall communities to leaves and comparing fungal communities in galls that had successful emergence versus no emergence of midges or parasitoids. Galls of midges that successfully emerged were associated with diverse gall fungal communities, some of which were the same as the fungi found in surrounding leaves. Galls with no insect emergence were characterized by relatively low fungal diversity.  相似文献

An adult female and a young great spotted woodpecker Dendrocopos major were found exploiting galls of the elm balloon‐gall aphid Eriosoma lanuginosum by eating both the insects and their honeydew. Literature offers sparse and indirect information to explain this behavior. Taking both aphids and honeydew from within galls is reported here for the first time for a bird species. Only one other vertebrate, the Eurasian red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris, would show similar behavior. In contrast with the seeming rarity of such a feeding way, likely advantages in the double food source suggest it may have been overlooked.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The nutrition hypothesis for the adaptive nature of galls states that gall-inducing insects control the nutrient levels in galls to their own benefit. Although the nutrition hypothesis is widely accepted, there have been few empirical tests of this idea.
2. A novel method is presented for testing the nutrition hypothesis that links manipulation of gall nutrient levels by the gall inducer to herbivore performance. The effects of adaptation and nutritional advantage are separated by using a herbivore that is adapted to a host plant susceptible to galling but one which never enters the gall environment.
3.  Hellinsia glenni (Cashatt), a plume moth (Pterophoridae) and one of its host plants provide an excellent system for testing the nutrition hypothesis because H. glenni larvae feed internally on the relatively nutrient-poor stems of a goldenrod, Solidago gigantea , but do not venture into the nutrient-rich galls induced on that plant by a tephritid fly, Eurosta solidaginis . The nutrition hypothesis was tested by transplanting early-instar H. glenni larvae into galls and stems of S. gigantea to determine if the larvae transplanted to galls would perform better compared with those larvae transplanted to stems.
4. The results support the nutrition hypothesis for the adaptive nature of galls. Hellinsia glenni achieved greater final mass in the gall environment compared with the final mass larvae achieved in the stem environment. There was also evidence that the quality of gall tissue is controlled by the gall inducer, which has not been previously demonstrated for mature E. solidaginis galls.  相似文献

The chemical composition of ethanolic and aqueous extracts from leafy galls produced after infection of Nicotiana tabacum L. plants with Rhodococcus fascians was drastically changed compared to uninfected controls. Chlorogenic acid was abundant both in uninfected and infected plants, but caffeic acid and another cinnamoyl analogue were new in leafy galls. The most pronounced product induced in leafy galls was identified as 7-O-methyl-6-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl coumarin (7-methyl esculin). This is the first report of the presence of this coumarin derivative in tobacco. Interestingly, 7-methyl esculin did not accumulate in the presence of avirulent R. fascians strains nor was it found in leafy galls on other plant species. However, it did appear in crown galls induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens on tobacco plants. Intriguingly, none of the phenolics known to accumulate in Solanaceae under pathogen attack were found in leafy galls. 7-Methyl esculin barely affected growth of R. fascians nor was it catabolized. Microscopical analysis showed that autofluorescent compounds were located mainly in the abundant meristematic regions of the leafy galls. Abstract.   1. On two dates, foliar characteristics of pin oak, Quercus palustris , infested with stem galls caused by the horned oak gall, Callirhytis cornigera , were investigated, and the consequences for subsequent herbivory assessed.
2. Second-instar caterpillars of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar , preferred foliage from ungalled trees.
3. Ungalled trees broke bud earlier than their galled counterparts.
4. Galled trees produced denser leaves with higher nitrogen and tannin concentrations, but foliar carbohydrates did not differ among galled and ungalled trees.
5. Concentrations of foliar carbohydrates in both galled and ungalled trees increased uniformly between the two assay dates. Nitrogen concentrations were greater in leaves from galled trees, and decreased uniformly in galled and ungalled trees over time. Foliar tannins were also greater in foliage from galled trees early in the season; however, foliar tannins declined seasonally in galled tissue so that by the second assay date there was no difference in tannin concentrations between galled and ungalled foliage.
6. In spite of differences in foliar characteristics, performance of older, fourth instar gypsy moth caterpillars did not differ between galled and ungalled trees.  相似文献

Cynipid galls are examples of induced plant development, where the gall inducer is in control of cell differentiation and morphogenesis of a new plant organ. This study concentrates on the tissues of the larval chamber common to all cynipid galls. The protein content of the inner gall tissue was compared to that of non‐gall plant tissues. We investigated three oak and two rose galls and their respective host plants. Total protein signatures of inner gall tissues were different from those of non‐gall plant tissues, and among the five galls. N‐terminal sequences were obtained for two abundant proteins from the inner gall tissues of D. spinosa and A. quercuscalicis, which were common to all galls, at 62 and 43 kDa. Database queries suggest the 62 kDa protein to be homologous to a protein disulphide isomerase (PDI), and the 43 kDa protein to be homologous to NAD‐dependent formate dehydrogenase (FDH). A naturally biotinylated protein was detected at 33 kDa during Western analyses with streptavidin. Western analyses revealed the presence of the biotinylated protein and PDI in the inner gall tissues of all five galls, while FDH was only detected in A. quercuscalicis and A. fecundator. PDI was also common to all non‐gall tissues, while FDH was not detected in non‐gall tissues, and the biotinylated protein was only detected in seeds. The proteins identified in the inner gall tissue suggest that (a) inner gall tissues in some galls are under respiratory stress, and (b) cynipid gall formation might involve the ectopic expression of seed‐specific proteins.  相似文献

Plant crown gall tumor cells result from the insertion and expression of a defined DNA sequence, called T-DNA, which is derived from the Ti plasmid, harbored by Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains. To study the function of the genes of the T-DNA of the nopaline Ti plasmid, pTiC58, a collection of mutants was isolated so that T-DNA genes are inactivated either separately or in various combinations. It was found that no single T-DNA gene or T-region border is absolutely essential for stable tumor formation. We have identified the gene responsible for synthesis in transformed cells of the phosphorylated sugar, agrocinopine, and at least three additional genes controlling the morphology of plant tumors. Two of these latter genes work together to inhibit shoot formation and ensure efficient tumorous growth. Inactivation of these genes can be suppressed by the addition of auxins. The third gene inhibits root formation and appears to play a role in the cytokinin-independent growth of transformed cells. Mutants missing all three genes do not induce tumors, nor shoot or root formation, although the mutant T-DNA sequence is transferred to plant cells.  相似文献

The problem of determining haplotypes from genotypes has gained considerable prominence in the research community. Here the focus is on determining sets of SNP values on individual chromosomes since such information captures the genetic causes of diseases. The most efficient algorithmic tool for haplotyping is based on perfect phylogenetic trees. A drawback of this method is that it cannot be applied in situations when the data contains homoplasies (multiple mutations of the same character) or recombinations. Recently, Song et al. ( 2005 ) studied the two cases: haplotyping via imperfect phylogenies with a single homoplasy and via galled-tree networks with one gall. In Gupta et al. ( 2010 ), we have shown that the haplotyping via galled-tree networks is NP-hard, even if we restrict to the case when every gall contains at most 3 mutations. We present a polynomial algorithm for haplotyping via galled-tree networks with simple galls (each having two mutations) for genotype matrices which satisfy a natural condition which is implied by presence of at least one 1 in each column that contains a 2. In the end, we give the experimental results comparing our algorithm with PHASE on simulated data.  相似文献
