The elemental composition of the human atherosclerotic popliteal artery was examined using the proton-induced X-ray-emission (PIXE) method. The application of a narrow proton beam (3 X 10 micron 2) enabled us to determine not only the concentrations of Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb, but also their localization in different artery-wall regions. The highest mean concentrations of Cl, K, Zn and Br were found in the tunica media. In the investigated sections the distribution of Ca and Fe varied: sometimes, these elements were prevalent in the tunica intima, whereas in other cases, the highest concentrations were observed in the tunica media or tunica adventitia. The concentration profiles of each element were characterized by many sharp, narrow peaks. The highest concentrations of Ca and Fe showed such high levels that only one explanation is possible, i.e. the presence of crystals. The correlation of Ca peaks with those of Zn and Fe is discussed. The usefulness of the micro-PIXE method for the investigation of biomedical materials is also considered.  相似文献

Although various proteins and some electrolytes have been measured in human saliva, little systematic data about the major and minor elemental components of this body fluid have been obtained. In order to obtain such data, concentrations of C, Na, P, Cl, K, Ca, Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sb, I, and Cs in human parotid saliva were measured by instrumental nuclear methods. The data obtained confirmed the relative lack of Zn in saliva of patients with hypogeusia (decreased taste acuity) and suggested that concentrations of Na, Cl, Br, and Ca followed the order: normals > hypogeusia > hyposmia (decreased smell acuity). To compare concentrations of elements in saliva with those in blood and urine, absolute concentrations were normalized to that of Na through the use of a concept called an enrichment factor. On this basis, parotid saliva is relatively depleted in Se, Zn, and Fe and enriched for most other elements relative to blood plasma indicating that the fluid is not simply a transudate of blood plasma. Using this same technique, saliva composition was found more similar to urine than blood plasma, being relatively depleted in Se, Cs, and Co, being enriched in I, Br, and Cr and having about the same relative concentrations of P, Cl, Zn, Fe, Ca, K, and Rb. As the total body concentrations of many of the enriched elements in saliva are extremely small, their enrichment in saliva suggests special roles for these elements in the oral cavity. Because of its accessibility, ease of collection, and interaction with some body constituents, saliva represents a useful, albeit neglected, tool in the diagnosis of some physiological and pathological changes in body function and in understanding important aspects of trace metal metabolism.  相似文献

The concentrations of 28 elements (Al, Br, Ca, Cl, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, S, Se, Si, Sr, Ti, V, Y, and Zn) were measured in mane hair by the particle-induced X-ray emission method. Except for Br, Cl, K, S, and P, the trace element concentrations in mane hair of horses are similar to literature values for human hair. The values obtained are not dependent on the horse's age, breed, and sex and could be used as reference values in the assessment of diseases and nutritional status in equines.  相似文献

An external 3.8-MeV proton beam was employed to induce X-rays in 100-mg pellets of human follicular fluids and in 4–8 mg pellets of spermatozoa. The elements Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Br were quantitatively determined in follicular fluids, whereas the elements, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn were determined in the spermatozoa. Both samples had high interelement Spearman correlation coefficients. Correlations of elements in the samples were observed with several clinical parameters. The multielemental analysis of spermatozoa can be used to approximate quantities of trace elements inserted into the egg ooplasm at the time of fertilization. These elemental quantities appear to be in the femtogram (10?15) range.  相似文献

Concentrations of As, Ca, Cd, Cl, Co, Cr, Cu, F, Fe, Hg, I, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, V, and Zn were determined in human whole milk samples from Guatemala, Hungary, Nigeria, Philippines, Sweden, and Zaire; in most of these countries, three groups of subjects representing different socioeconomic conditions were studied. Analytical quality control was a primary consideration throughout. The analytical techniques used were atomic absorption spectrophotometry, atomic emission spectrometry with an inductively coupled plasma, colorimetry, electrochemistry, using an ion-selective electrode and neutron activation analysis. The differences between median concentrations of Ca, Cl, Mg, K, Na, and P (minor elements) were lower than 20% among the six countries. Among trace elements, concentrations observed in Filipino milk for As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, F, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, and V were higher than for milk samples from other countries. The remaining five countries showed a mixed picture of high and low values. In the case of at least some elements, such as, F, I, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Se, the environment appears to play a major role in determining their concentrations in human milk. The nutritional status of the mother, as reflected by her socioeconomic status, does not appear to influence significantly the breast milk concentrations of minor and trace elements. Significant differences exist between the actual daily intakes observed in this study and current dietary recommendations made by, for example, WHO and the US National Academy of Sciences. These differences are particularly large (an order of magnitude or more!) for Cr, F, Fe, Mn, and Mo; for other elements, such as, Ca, Cu, Mg, P, and Zn, they amount to at least a factor 2. In the opinion of the present authors, these findings point to the need for a possible reassessment of the dietary requirements of young infants with respect to minor and trace elements, particularly for the elements Ca, Cr, Cu, F, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, and Zn.  相似文献

Two nuclear techniques, Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis (EDXRF) and Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), were used to analyze aerosol samples collected in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Na, Cl, Mn, V, Al, Sm, Mo, W, La, As, Br, Sb, K, Ba, Se, Th, Cr, Rb, Ca, Fe, Ce, and Sc were determined by INAA, and Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Hg, and Pb were determined by EDXRF. A preliminary identification of the main source of the atmospheric aerosol was performed based on enrichment factor and correlation coefficient calculations.

Abstract

The effect of sulfur fertilization on the silage yield and essential and non-essential element composition of silage corn was investigated at the Experimental Field of Research and Experiment Station of the Ankara University during the years 2002 and 2003. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with five replications. Sulfur was applied at 1000 (S1) and 1500 (S2) kg ha?1 as gypsum. Element concentration of the plants was measured by polarized energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (PEDXRF). Sulfur fertilization increased S concentrations and improved silage corn yield for both years. Applied S reduced P and Mo concentrations, increased Fe and Mn concentrations, and had no significant effect on the K, Ca, Mg, Zn and Cl concentrations of silage corn. Non-essential element composition of silage corn was also influenced by S fertilization. Applied S significantly increased Sr and Pb, reduced Si, Ba and U, while had no effect on Na, Ti, Ni, Br and Rb concentrations of silage corn. In the current work, essential and non-essential element concentrations of silage corn in 2002 and 2003 years under our experimental conditions were as follows; 1.58–1.89 S, 1.07–1.046 P, 14.3–15.9 K, 8.35–9.20 Ca, 3.34–4.28 Mg, 0.26–0.53 Na, 1.36–2.46 Cl, 38.4–42.1 Si as g kg?1, and 2.06–3.13 Mo, 140–144 Fe, 6.08–17.69 Zn, 104–116 Mn, 9.37–12.2 Cu, 23.9–22.6 Ti, 2.10–2.31 Ni, 6.54–6.71 Br, 7.04–8.74 Rb, 94.8–118.8 Sr, 24.0–31.51 Ba, 1.20–2.22 Pb and 3.17–4.07 U as mg kg?1.  相似文献

This work is an application of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) as analytical technique for trace element determination in human tissues. Potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), bromine (Br), rubidium (Rb) and lead (Pb) were determined directly in blood samples from 66 mothers at delivery after full-term pregnancies. The corresponding 66 cord-blood samples of the newborns were also analysed, in order to find element correlations between maternal and newborn blood at birth. The studied samples were obtained from mothers aged between 15 and 39 years old, the gestational age being between 35 and 41 weeks and the newborns' weight between 2.310 and 4.310 kg. Samples were lyophilised and analysed without any chemical treatment. Very low levels of Pb were found both in maternal and fetal cord blood samples. Cu values ranged from 3 to 13 microg g-1, both for mothers and children. A correlation between Cu and Fe concentrations in maternal and fetal cord blood was found. Zn is considered as one of the key elements in newborn health. Concentrations between 10 and 40 microg g-1 were measured. A positive correlation between Br levels in mothers and children was observed. Positive correlations for mothers were observed between Zn and Rb as well as K and Fe. The corresponding correlations in fetal cord blood samples were not observed, however positive correlations were found between Ca and K; Cu and Fe. The mean concentrations for each element were similar in maternal and in fetal cord blood, except for Cu and Zn, being higher in maternal samples. No correlations between element concentrations and pathologies of the mothers were observed.  相似文献

Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been used to obtain the concentrations of 11 elements (P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, and Cd) in whole-blood samples of 16 hypertensive subjects (mean age: 52.5 ± 0.5 yr) and 18 age-matched controls (mean age: 51.5 ± 0.5 yr) in a Nigerian population. The results of the study indicate that the hypertensive subjects have significantly higher mean concentration of Cl, Cd, Cu, and Zn when compared with the controls, and the mean concentration of P, K, and Ca was found to be significantly lower in the hypertensive group in comparison to the controls. Furthermore, the Zn : Cd ratio was found to be significantly higher in the controls than in the hypertensives, and the Cu : Zn ratio was significantly higher in the hypertensives.  相似文献

An analysis was made of the levels of Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Na, K, Ca and Mg in three green and four brown seaweeds, abundant in the Antikyra Gulf (Viotia, Greece). After Ca and the macroelements K, Mg, Na, the higher concentrations found were of Fe and Pb, with Fe>Pb. Cadmium content was low in most species. Differences between species and taxonomic groups were also considered. Fe, Zn, Cd and Ca in the green algaDasycladus vermicularis increased from March to July and had their maxima in summer or autumn (Cd), whereas Cu, Pb and Mg showed an opposite pattern of seasonal variation with maxima in winter. Cu, Zn, Cd and K inD. vermicularis were correlated with their concentrations in the sediment and not with their dissolved levels in seawater. Iron inD. vermicularis was positively correlated with Zn and negatively with Cd.  相似文献

The influence of hair color on the trace elemental status in horse's hair has been studied. A current analytical technique such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) used in this study has provided reliable, rapid, easy, and relatively inexpensive diagnostic methods. Twenty-eight elements (Al, Br, Ca, Cl, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, S, Se, Si, Sr, Ti, V, Y, and Zn) in mane hair were detected by the PIXE method. The gray hair contains significantly greter amounts of Cu, Ti, and Zn, and lower amounts of Br, Ca, Se, and Sr than those in other colored horse hairs (p<0.05). Those results measured in the horse's hair were similar to those found in human and dog hair. When interpreting a result, it should be kept in mind that hair color, especially gray hair, influences the concentrations of some elements in horse hair.  相似文献

Traditionally, Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. F. & Thomson (Menispermaceae), Ocimum sanctum L. (Lamiaceae), Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae), and Phyllanthus niruri L. (Euphorbiaceae) are some of the commonly used medicinal plants in India for curing ailments ranging from common cold, skin diseases, and dental infections to major disorders like diabetes, hypertension, jaundice, rheumatism, etc. To understand and correlate their medicinal use, trace element studies on the aqueous extract of these medicinal plants have been carried out using particle-induced X-ray emission technique. A 2-MeV proton beam was used to identify and characterize major and minor elements namely Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, and Sr in them. Results have revealed that these elements are present in varying concentrations in the selected plants. Notable results include very high concentrations of Cl, K, and Ca in all the leaf samples, appreciable levels of Mn in all plants, high Zn content in T. cordifolia, and the aqueous extract of Moringa leaves compared to others and relative higher concentrations of Cr in all the plants.  相似文献

The occurrence of trace elements in the teeth of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) collected from the North Pacific from 1968 to 1999 is described. Using particle-induced X-ray emission analysis, we detected eight trace elements: Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Sr and Pb. We used a general linear model to evaluate long-term trends of trace element accumulation. Zn (Zn/Ca) and Fe (Fe/Ca) levels both varied during the last three decades, and showed significant differences between animals of different age (Fe/Ca), season (Zn/Ca and Fe/Ca), and sex (Zn/Ca); both Zn/Ca and Fe/Ca ratios were higher in young males than older males. Pb was detected in 39% of the samples from Hokkaido (Japan) and 22% of those from Alaska. The high levels of Pb recorded in 1975 were thought to be related to the use of leaded gasoline during the 1970s. Our results indicate that the levels of trace elements in the teeth of Steller sea lions can be used as indicators of temporal and spatial variations of trace element pollution.  相似文献

The concentrations of 19 trace element in hair samples from 1273 residents of Harbin (China), Medan (Indonesia), and Tokushima (Japan) were measured by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. The mean concentrations of Ba, Ca, and Se were significantly higher in the Harbin hair samples when compared to those from Medan, but Al, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, Pb, Ti, Zn, and K were significantly higher in Medan than in Harbin hair samples. The differences in the mean concentrations of As, Cr, Mg, P, Sn, and Sr between the Medan and Harbin lots were not significant. In the Tokushima hair samples, Na and K were significantly higher, but As, B, Ba, Ca, Cr, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sn, Sr, and Se were significantly lower than in the Harbin hair samples. The differences in the mean concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, P, Ti, and Zn between Harbin and Tokushima were not significant. In the Medan hair samples, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sn, Sr, Ti, and Zn were significantly higher, but P and Se were significantly lower than in Tokushima hair samples. Differences in mean concentrations of Na and K between Tokushima and Medan were not significant.  相似文献

In this study, the elements Br, Ca, Cl, Fe, Na, Rb, Se and Zn were determined in serum of a healthy elderly population residing in the São Paulo Metropolitan area, using instrumental neutron activation analysis. Comparison studies indicated that only Se concentration was significantly lower in the elderly group aged 75–91 years than those obtained for the group aged 60–74 years. Between genders, males presented lower Br concentrations and, the females lower Fe. Mean concentrations obtained for most elements were within the values reported in the literature.  相似文献

Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis was employed to determine the concentrations of six elements in the plasma and erythrocytes of 18 cancer subjects (15 males and 3 females) with neoplastic disorders and in 70 controls (35 males and 35 females). It was found that the concentrations of Br, K, and Zn were significantly elevated in the erythrocytes of the cancer subjects compared to the controls, whereas the concentration of Fe was significantly depressed, but with no difference observed in the concentration of Ca. In the plasma, the concentrations of Br, Cu, Ca, and K were significantly elevated, whereas the concentrations of Fe and Zn were found to be significantly depressed compared to the controls.  相似文献

In order to ascertain possible correlation between alterations in trace elemental profile and the progression or regression of two most common potentially malignant disorders affecting oral cavity, namely oral submucous fibrosis and leukoplakia, blood from 60 patients from each group of patients as well from 30 healthy individuals was analyzed for elemental profiling employing EDXRF technique. Out of the 16 detected elements (K, Si, Ca, V, Cr, Ni, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Co, and Pb), Mn, Fe, Zn, Br, and Co showed remarkable alteration in their profile in both leukoplakia and oral submucous fibrosis patients with respect to the normal healthy individuals. While Zn, Br, and Fe reflected similar changes--showing gross depletion in both the diseased groups, Mn and Co depicted inverse pattern of alterations in their concentrations in the two types of precancerous disorders when compared to the control subjects.  相似文献

The plasmas of breast cancer patients and healthy donors were analyzed for selected trace metals by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In the plasma of breast cancer patients, mean concentrations of macronutrients/essential metals, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Zn were 3584, 197.0, 30.80, 6.740, 5.266, and 6.170 ppm, respectively, while the mean metal levels in the plasma of healthy donors were 3908, 151.0, 72.40, 17.70, 6.613, and 2.461 ppm, respectively. Average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, and Zn were noted to be significantly higher in the plasma of breast cancer patients compared with healthy donors. Very strong mutual correlations (r > 0.70) in the plasma of breast cancer patients were observed between Cd–Pb, Cr–Li, Li–K, Li–Cd, K–Cr, Li–Pb, Cr–Co, Cu–Ni, Co–K, Cd–K, and K–Pb, whereas, Al–Cr, Ca–Zn, Cd–Sb, Cd–Zn, Ca–Mg, Fe–Zn, and Na–Mn exhibited strong relationships (r > 0.60) in the plasma of healthy donors. The cluster analysis revealed considerably different apportionment of trace metals in the two groups of donors. The average metal concentrations of different age groups of the two donor categories were also evaluated, which showed the build-up of Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Li, Pb, Sb, and Zn in the plasma of breast cancer patients. The role of some trace metals in carcinogenesis is also discussed. The study indicated appreciably different patterns of metal distribution and correlation in the plasma of breast cancer patients in comparison with the healthy population.  相似文献
