The present studyexamined two contrasting multilevel model structures to describe thedevelopmental (longitudinal) changes in strength and aerobic power inchildren: 1) an additive polynomial structure and 2) a multiplicativestructure with allometric body size components. On the basis of themaximum log-likelihood criterion, the multiplicative "allometric"model was shown to be superior to the additive polynomial model whenfitted to the data from two published longitudinal studies and toprovide more plausible solutions within and beyond the range ofobservations.The multilevel regression analysis ofstudy 1 confirmed that aerobic powerdevelops approximately in proportion to body mass,m1/3. Theanalyses from study 2 identified asignificant increase in quadriceps and biceps strength, in proportionto body size, plus an additional contribution from age, centered atabout peak height velocity (PHV). The positive "age" term forboys suggested that at PHV the boys were becoming stronger in thequadriceps and biceps in relation to their body size. In contrast, thegirls' age term was either negligible (quadriceps) or negative(biceps), indicating that at PHV the girls' strength was developing inproportion to or, in the case of the biceps, was becoming weaker inrelation to their body size.

The first-stage zoeas of Carpilius convexus (Forskål,1775) and Carpilius maculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) are describedand fully illustrated. Both these Indo-West Pacific speciesexhibited a unique xanthoidean character for the basis of thesecond maxilliped, which possesses five (arranged 1,1,1,2) setaeinstead of the expected four (arranged 1,1,1,1). A comparisonwith the zoeal stages of Carpilius corallinus (Herbst, 1783)as reported by Laughlin et al. (Laughlin et al., 1983) revealedmarked differences including the possession of carapace lateralspines (v. absent in C. convexus only), the subterminal setationof the distal maxillule endopod segment with two subterminalsetae (versus one subterminal seta in Indo-West Pacific species),the terminal setation of the distal maxillule endopod segmentwith four setae (versus three setae in C. convexus only), twolateral spines on the telson (versus three in Indo-West Pacificspecies) and the number of zoeal stages. The first-stage zoeasof the two Indo-West Pacific species appear to have hatchedin a more advanced state of development than those of C. corallinus,and the expression of a number of characters has been accelerated(early onset). In fact, the zoeal stages of both Indo-West Pacificspecies and carpiliid species appear to be abbreviated becausethe first zoeas are considered to be equivalent to the third-stagezoeas of C. corallinus.  相似文献

In most organisms, transitions between different life-history stages occur later and at smaller sizes as growth conditions deteriorate. Day and Rowe recently proposed that this pattern could be explained by the existence of developmental thresholds (minimum sizes or levels of condition below which transitions are unable to proceed). The developmental-threshold model predicts that the reaction norm of age and size at maturity will rotate in an anticlockwise manner from positive to a shallow negative slope if: (i) initial body size or condition is reduced; and/or (ii) some individuals encounter poor growth conditions at increasingly early developmental stages. We tested these predictions by rearing replicated populations of soil mites Sancassania berlesei (Michael) under different growth conditions. High-food environments produced a vertical relationship between age and size at maturity. The slope became increasingly shallow as food was reduced. By contrast, high food in the maternal environment reduced the slope of the reaction norm of age and size at maturity, whereas low food increased it. Overall, the reaction norm of age and size at maturity in S. berlesei was significantly nonlinear and differed for males and females. We describe how growth conditions, mother's environment and sex determine age and size at maturity in S. berlesei.  相似文献

During experiments in a south Norwegian fjord in March and April1979, distribution and development of zooplankton were investigatedin detail. Numbers of protozooplankton, meroplankton and holoplanktonwere determined as individual species. Strong water exchangecaused a high variability in plankton composition and biomass.Changes in salinity and temperature as well as numbers of planktonindividuals and in the percentage composition of the developmentalstages of the spring spawning Calanus finmarchicus revealedthat a wind-induced inflow of Skagerrak water along the southwestNorwegian coast also entered the Rosfjord. In contrast to theAtlantic water with low numbers of copepods from the hibernatinggeneration, in the Skagerrak water the spring generation ofC.finmarchicus had already developed up to the first and secondcopepodite stages. The Skagerrak water was already very richin phyto- and zooplankton organisms. Here, an increase in biomassover time mainly resulted from the development of younger toolder copepodite stages and from a considerable increase innumbers of the tintinnid, Leprotintinnus pellucidus. The verticaldistribution of plankton organisms and fecal pellets was closelyassociated with the occurrence and the stratification of watermasses coming into the Rosfjord.  相似文献

The consumption of photosynthetic and heterotrophic cells byan abundant calanoid copepod species feeding on natural planktoncommunities was quantified with a state-of-the-art image-analysissystem. Late copepodid stages of Eucalanus pileatus did notingest bactena, small photosynthetic and heterotrophic nanoplankton,or the abundant Ceratium spp. in quantifiable amounts Althoughdiatoms were by far the most abundant cells (in terms of POC1–1), the copepods ingested a higher percentage of ciliatesin relation to their abundance than of diatoms and small heterotrophicdinoflagellates in the first experiment, and ingested a higherpercentage of dinoflagel lates and ciliates compared to diatomsin the second experiment Heterotrophic cells sufficiently largeto be captured were repeatedly preferred by E.pileatus overautotrophs of similar or larger size. More over, among the cellswhich could be individually perceived by this calanoid, largerones were not pre ferred over smaller cells, implying that someaspect of food quality can be as significant as prey size. Theseresults support the notion (e.g. Kleppel, Mar. Ecol Prog. Three species of benthic marine macroalgae comprise the chiefcomponents of the seaweed flora of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica.Quantitative studies at Cape Evans demonstrate a depth-relateddistribution pattern, with Iridaea cordata (Turner) Bory inshallow water, Phyllophora antarctica A. and E. S. Gepp abundantand fertile at intermediate depths, and Leptophytum coulmanicum(Foslie) Adey dominant below 20 m. The vertical distributionof species is correlated with irradiance levels. At sites withthinner annual sea ice and less snow accumulation (e.g., CapeEvans, Cape Royds, and Granite Harbor), vertical distributionsare shifted downward relative to those at sites that remaincovered most of the year with thick or snow-covered fast ice(e.g., Cape Armitage and New Harbor). Disturbance caused byice scour and anchor ice probably determines the upper limitof algal distribution; herbivory is apparently absent. There is a disproportionate representation of cystocarpic femalegametophytes in populations of I. cordata and P. antarctica.Perennation via persistent basal crusts and apogamic recyclingof gametophytes are suggested as factors structuring phase distribution.Although the overall size of I. cordata blades is greater (andcystocarpic plants more abundant) at Cape Royds than at CapeEvans, cystocarpic blades are similar in minimum size at bothsites, indicating a threshhold size or age for the onset ofreproduction in this species.  相似文献

To investigate the plasticityof slow and fast muscles undergoing slow-to-fast transition, rat soleus(SOL), gastrocnemius (GAS), and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscleswere exposed for 14 days to 1) unweighting by hindlimbsuspension (HU), or 2) treatment with the2-adrenergic agonist clenbuterol (CB), or 3)a combination of both (HU-CB). In general, HU elicited atrophy, CBinduced hypertrophy, and HU-CB partially counteracted the HU-induced atrophy. Analyses of myosin heavy (MHC) and light chain (MLC) isoformsrevealed HU- and CB-induced slow-to-fast transitions in SOL (increasesof MHCIIa with small amounts of MHCIId and MHCIIb) and theupregulation of the slow MHCIa isoform. The HU- and CB-induced changesin GAS consisted of increases in MHCIId and MHCIIb("fast-to-faster transitions"). Changes in the MLC composition ofSOL and GAS consisted of slow-to-fast transitions and mainlyencompassed an exchange of MLC1s with MLC1f. In addition, MLC3f waselevated whenever MHCIId and MHCIIb isoforms were increased. Becausethe EDL is predominantly composed of type IID and IIB fibers, HU, CB,and HU-CB had no significant effect on the MHC and MLC patterns.

The ontogeny of strombid behavior was studied by observing thebehavior of Strombus maculatus veligers collected from the planktonand reared past metamorphosis to adults, and by observing juvenilestrombids collected in the field. Complete adult modal actionpatterns (MAP's) associated with locomotion, feeding, and rightingof overturned shells are performed by S. maculatus juvenilesimmediately after metamorphosis. There are changes in the frequencyof the use of certain MAP's which are associated with variationsin shell shape and size. The unique strombid escape response to molluscivorous gastropods(Conns spp.) is not released until juvenile S. maculatus arethree weeks past metamorphosis and two millimeters in shelllength. At that stage, the complete response is released uponthe first encounter with a predator. Experience with a predatordoes not seem to lower the age or size criteria. During ontogeny there is a trend toward an increasing complexityof behavior which is paralleled by an increasing complexityof neural structure and general morphology. There are majorsteps in the ontogeny of strombid behavior which probably coincidewith neural and morphological stages.  相似文献

Ventilation decreases and airway resistanceincreases with the loss of electroencephalogram alpha activity at sleeponset. The aim of this study was to determine whether reflexive load compensation is lost immediately on the loss of alpha activity. Sixhealthy male subjects were studied under two conditions (load andcontrol-no load), in three states (continuous alpha, continuous theta,and immediately after a transition from alpha to theta), and in twophases (early and late sleep onset). Ventilation and respiratory timingwere measured. A comparison of loaded with control conditions indicatedthat loading had no effect on inspiratory minute ventilation duringcontinuous alpha (differential effect of 0.00 l/min) and only a small,nonsignificant effect in theta immediately after phase2 transitions (0.31 l/min), indicating a preservationof load compensation at these times. However, there were significantdecreases in inspiratory minute ventilation on loaded trials duringcontinuous theta in phase 2 (0.77 l/min) and phase 3 (1.15 l/min) andduring theta immediately after a transition in phase3 (0.87 l/min), indicating a lack of reflexive loadcompensation. The results indicate that, because reflex load compensation is state dependent, state-related changes in airway resistance contribute to state-related changes in ventilation duringsleep onset. However, this effect was slightly delayed with transitionsinto theta early in sleep.

Observations of radiotracer (32P) flow in size-fractionatedlake plankton were compared with the predictions of size-dependentmodels of material flow. The models assume that the metabolicactivity and turnover of the size fractions can be describedas power functions of size (Y=aMb) One model, called size-structured,is an application of the Platt and Denman formalism: it assumesthat materials are incorporated preferentially by the smallestorganisms and flow continuously toward the larger organisms.In this model, the trophodynamic flow from a size fraction isconstrained to the next larger fraction. The tracer data indicatedthat metabolic activity could indeed be described as a continuousfunction of size, at least within the microplankton (< 75µm), but it did not support the hypothesis of a size-hierarchicaltrophodynamic flow. Another model limited the size range ofpredators to the larger (> 10 µm), size fractions whilerelaxing the size dependence constraint on the trophodynamicflow. This ‘unstructured’ model agreed better withthe 32P dynamics and generated estimates of seston P uptakeand of the rates of biomass turnover that compared favorablywith published estimates for oligotrophic lakes. Some problemswith the fit to the data remain but might be dealt with by distinguishinga priori among functional types of planktonic organisms throughfluorescence (flow cytometry) or metabolic properties (inhibitors).  相似文献

The effect of genes ar (violet flowers, small hilum) and n (thick,fleshy pod wall) on whole plant in senescence peas was examinedby comparing Ar- with arar and N- with nn plants in segregatingprogenies. Homozygosity for ar or n significantly delayed the time whenthe plants were ready for harvest of their entire seed crop.These genes did not delay either the onset of reproduction orthe onset of apical arrest in the first instance. However, whereasAr- N- plants almost invariably senesced and died as the firstseed crop matured, the majority of arar and/or nn plants entereda period of secondary growth and a further fruiting cycle. Comparedwith Ar- plants, arar plants had over twice as many pods andseeds but individual seeds were 58 per cent lighter and totalseed yield (wt) was 19 per cent less. Pod length was unaffected.Compared with N-plants, nn plants had shorter pods (16 per cent),fewer seeds per pod (21 per cent), smaller seeds (20 per cent)and a lower total seed yield (wt 14 per cent less). It appearsthat ar and n impose a lower metabolic drain per reproductivenode as a consequence of their effects on hilum anatomy andpod morphology, respectively. These mutants disrupt the normalpattern of monocarpic senescence by breaking the coordinationbetween apical arrest and subsequent events. The developingseed crop delimited by the first arrest fails to cause plantdeath, possibly because sink size is less than in normal counterparts.  植物群落季相阶段的划分,对于诊断地方、区域和全球尺度上生态系统对气候变化的快速响应和进行遥感植被生长季节的地面检验,具有重要 的科学意义。该文利用物候累积频率拟合法对我国东部温带地区7个站点1982~1996年的植物群落季相阶段进行划分,并分析了植物群落季相的 空间差异和年际变化及其与气候因子的关系。结果表明:1)各站点多年平均变绿期和旺盛光合期初日随纬度的升高而推迟,凋落期和休眠期初 日随纬度的升高而提前;多年平均变绿期、旺盛光合期和凋落期长度随纬度的变化不甚明显,而休眠期则随纬度的升高明显延长;2)在研究期 间内,站点平均变绿期初日以0.6 d&;#8226;a-1的平均速率显著提前,且长度以0.7 d&;#8226;a-1的平均速率显著延长;旺盛光合期初日呈不显著推迟,长 度呈不显著缩短;凋落期初日呈微弱提前,长度呈微弱延长;休眠期初日呈微弱提前,但长度却以0.9 d&;#8226;a-1的平均速率显著缩短;3)站点平 均变绿期初日与当月平均气温的负相关显著,平均气温每升高1 ℃,初日提前约4.3 d;站点平均旺盛光合期初日与初日前第二个月到初日当月 平均气温的负相关显著,平均气温每升高1 ℃,初日提前约4.4 d;站点平均凋落期和休眠期初日与气温的相关均不显著。  相似文献

Heterosquilla tricarinata was laboratory-cultured through itscomplete larval development and found to have one propelagicand two pelagic larval stages prior to metamorphosis to thejuvenile. These larval stages, the first juvenile, and relevantportions of the second juvenile stage, are described and figured.Individual larvae do not change in size during intermoult periods.Larvae occurring in the plankton show a progressive decreasein mean size between early (September) and late (November) springtime.Reasons for this are suggested. The first pelagic stage of H.tricarinata is anatomically very advanced in development, andthe number of pelagic stages very few, in comparison with otherknown stomatopod life-histories. Ecological implications ofthis are discussed in relation to the high-latitude distributionof the species. Aims Plants and animals represent the first two kingdomsrecognized, and remain the two best-studied groups in termsof nuclear DNA content variation. Unfortunately, the traditionalchasm between botanists and zoologists has done much to preventan integrated approach to resolving the C-value enigma, thelong-standing puzzle surrounding the evolution of genome size.This grand division is both unnecessary and counterproductive,and the present review aims to illustrate the numerous linksbetween the patterns and processes found in plants and animalsso that a stronger unity can be developed in the future. • Scope This review discusses the numerous parallels thatexist in genome size evolution between plants and animals, including(i) the construction of large databases, (ii) the patterns ofDNA content variation among taxa, (iii) the cytological, morphological,physiological and evolutionary impacts of genome size, (iv)the mechanisms by which genomes change in size, and (v) thedevelopment of new methodologies for estimating DNA contents. • Conclusions The fundamental questions of the C-valueenigma clearly transcend taxonomic boundaries, and increasedcommunication is therefore urged among those who study genomesize evolution, whether in plants, animals or other organisms.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Larvae of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster,live within necrotic fruit, a challenging environment in whichlarvae can experience severe thermal stress. One response tothermal stress, the expression of heat-shock proteins (Hsps),has evolved distinctively in this species; the gene encodingHsp70 has undergone extensive duplication and accounts for thebulk of Hsps that are expressed upon heat shock. Genetic engineeringof hsp70 copy number is sufficient to affect thermotoleranceat some (but not all) life stages. Increases in Hsp70, moreover,can protect intact larvae against thermal inactivation of theenzyme alcohol dehydrogenase and thermal inhibition of feeding.Deleterious consequences of high levels of Hsp70, however, maylimit further evolutionary proliferation of hsp70 genes. Thesefindings illustrate how the perspectives of integrative andcomparative biology, if applied to even well-studied model organisms,can lead to novel findings.  相似文献

Pomacea canaliculata, an apple snail native to South America,has become a serious pest of aquatic crops and a promoter ofecosystem changes in natural wetlands worldwide. Its successas an invader has been attributed to its great phenotypic plasticityin life-history traits. Our aims were to determine the reactionnorms of size and age at maturity under a gradient of food deprivation.Full sibling experimental snails were reared in isolation fromhatching and maintained until maturity under seven differentlevels of relative food deprivation based on size-specific ingestionrates. To detect the onset of sexual activity of experimentalsnails, fully mature virgin snails reared in the laboratorywere used as consorts. The reaction norms for age and size atmaturity of P. canaliculata showed marked sexual dimorphism.Shell length was the main component of variation in the malereaction norms for both copulation and egg-laying by femaleconsorts, whereas age was the main component of variation forfemales. Irrespective of the intensity of food deprivation,males mature at the same age at the expense of size, since sizeis apparently irrelevant in the access to females and male fitnesscan be maximized through fast maturation. In contrast, a minimumsize is required for females to reach maturity, perhaps as aresult of their higher reproductive costs. The highly dimorphicreaction norms lead to an increasing lag between male and femalematurity as deprivation increases; in temperate regions, malesborn early in the reproductive season would mature in the sameseason irrespective of food availability, while most femaleswould have to overwinter before attaining sexual maturity inunproductive habitats or those dominated by unpalatable macrophytes.The great life-history plasticity reported in invaded areascould be a heritage from populations in the native range. The growth of organisms from humans to bacteria is affected by environmental conditions. However, mechanisms governing growth and size control are not well understood, particularly in the context of changes in food availability in developing multicellular organisms. Here, we use a novel microfluidic platform to study the impact of diet on the growth and development of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. This device allows us to observe individual worms throughout larval development, quantify their growth as well as pinpoint the moulting transitions marking successive developmental stages. Under conditions of low food availability, worms grow very slowly, but do not moult until they have achieved a threshold size. The time spent in larval stages can be extended by over an order of magnitude, in agreement with a simple threshold size model. Thus, a critical worm size appears to trigger developmental progression, and may contribute to prolonged lifespan under dietary restriction.  相似文献

Offspring size can have pervasive effects throughout an organism'slife history. Mothers can make either a few large or many smalloffspring, and the balance between these extremes is determinedby the relationship between offspring size and performance.This relationship in turn is thought to be determined by theoffspring's environment. Recently, it has become clear thatevents in one life-history stage can strongly affect performancein another. Given these strong carryover effects, we asked whetherevents in the larval phase can change the relationship betweenoffspring size and performance in the adult phase. We manipulatedthe length of the larval period in the bryozoan Bugula neritinaand then examined the relationship between offspring size andvarious parameters of adult performance under field conditions.We found that despite the adult stage being outplanted intoidentical conditions, different offspring sizes were predictedto be optimal, depending on the experience of those adults aslarvae. This work highlights the fact that the strong phenotypiclinks between life-history stages may result in optimal offspringsize being highly unpredictable for organisms with complex lifecycles.  相似文献

Behavioral interactions between a cyclopoid copepod predator and its prey   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Behavioral observations on the predatory interactions betweenMesocyclops edax and several different types and sizes of preyrevealed that prey size alone was less important than otherspecific morphological and behavioral characteristics of theprey in deterring successful predation by the copepod. The behavioralresponses of Bosmina and Asplanchna to an attacking copepodwere passive and consisted of a simple retraction of vulnerableswimming appendages which made the prey more difficult to grasp.Daphnia and Diaphanosoma on the other hand exhibited very activeswimming escape responses. Tropocyclops usually avoided M. edaxby fleeing before the larger predator could detect them. Thehard carapaces of Daphnia, Bosmina and Keratella were effectiveat reducing ingestion following capture by M. edax. The resultsof these behavioral observations were supported by enclosureexperiments in which the predator was offered a choice betweentwo prey simultaneously. Cyclopoid copepods are capable of successfullyattacking, capturing and ingesting prey organisms several timestheir own body length.
