Intraspecific studies of selection on multiple traits of a plant's life history provide insight as to how the composite life history of an organism evolves. Current understanding of selection on plant life-history traits is deficient in three important areas: 1) the effects of selection through correlated traits, 2) the effects of selection on a trait throughout the plant's lifetime, and 3) spatial and temporal variation in selection on plant life-history traits among populations and years. This study documents spatial and temporal variation in selection on three life-history and two morphological traits for two natural populations of Chamaecrista fasciculata, a native summer annual. Life-history and morphological traits (date of seedling emergence, size at establishment, size prior to reproduction, date of initial flowering, and date of initial fruit maturation) varied significantly between sites and/or years. Selection on traits varied either spatially, between sites and among transects within one site, or temporally, between years. In addition, life-history traits were phenotypically correlated among themselves and with morphological traits; correlations were generally constant over time and space. Indirect selection caused changes in means and variances in traits not under direct selection, but which were correlated with traits under selection. Selection on date of emergence varied in direction and magnitude among different life-cycle stages, while selection on other traits varied only in magnitude among life stages of the plant. This study documents the complexity of the selective process and the importance of considering multiple life stages and traits when studying the evolution of life-history traits.  相似文献

Summary Selections from factor and principal component analyses were compared with those from the Smith-Hazel index when selecting for several switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) traits. The objective of this study was to examine several alternatives to index selection. Such procedures would potentially eliminate problems of selection associated with Smith-Hazel indices, including errors in genetic parameter estimates and difficulty in assigning relative economic weights to traits. Selection was performed on 1,280 plants that were evaluated over 2 years at 1 location, in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates. The plants were evaluated for forage yield and several forage quality traits. The comparisons of index selection with principal factor analysis, maximum-likelihood factor analysis and principal component analysis were made for three sets of traits (five traits per set) to estimate repeatability for the comparisons. Multivariate analyses were performed on both simple and genotypic correlation matrices. Comparisons were made by computing Spearman's rank correlations between selection index plant scores and scores computed from multivariate analysis and by determining the number of plants selected in common for the selection methods. Among the three multivariate analysis methods evaluated in this study, principal component analysis had the highest correlation with index selection. The high correlation for principal component analysis of simple correlation matrices indicates the potential for using this statistical method for selection purposes. This would permit the breeder to reduce field costs (e.g., time, labor, equipment) required to obtain the genetic parameter estimates necessary to construct selection indices.  相似文献

Intercrossing red clover plants, selected for reaction to Fusarium root rot (F. avenaceum), produced progenies with lower root rot scores than the parental cultivar Hermes II. Eleven percent of the progenies had less than 2 mm root rot after two cycles of selection, compared to less than 1% in the parental cultivar. Root rot severity in two old local strains of red clover, as well as in two populations of wild red clover, was lower than in cv. Hermes II. This could indicate that a natural selection for root rot resistance can occur in red clover.  相似文献

Selection on known loci affecting quantitative traits (DSQ) was compared to phenotypic selection index for a single and a two-trait selection objective. Two situations were simulated; a single known quantitative locus, and ten identified loci accounting for all the additive genetic variance. Selection efficiency of DSQ relative to traitbased selection was higher for two-trait selection, than was selection on a single trait with the same heritability. The advantage of DSQ was greater when the traits were negatively correlated. Relative selection efficiency (RSE) for a single locus responsible for 0.1 of the genetic variance was 1.11 with heritabilities of 0.45 and 0.2 and zero genetic and phenotypic correlations between the traits. RSE of DSQ for ten known loci was 1.5 to 1.8 in the first 3 generations of selection, but declined in each subsequent generation. With DSQ most loci reached fixation after 7 generations. Response to trait-based selection continued through generation 15 and approached the response obtained with DSQ after 10 generations. The cumulative genetic response after 10 generations of DSQ was only 93% to 97% of the economically optimum genotype because the less favorable allele reached fixation for some loci, generally those with effects in opposite directions on the two traits.  相似文献

The most vulnerable stage in the life of plants is the seedling. The transition from wild to agricultural land that plants experienced during and after domestication implied a noticeable change in the seedlings′ environment. Building on current knowledge of seedling ecology, and on previous studies of cassava, we hypothesise that cultivation should have promoted epigeal germination of seedlings, and more exposed and photosynthetic cotyledons. To test this hypothesis, we phenotyped seedling morpho‐functional traits in a set of domesticated and wild progenitor accessions of 20 Eudicot herbaceous crop species. Qualitative traits like epi‐ versus hypogeal germination, leafy versus storage type of cotyledons, or crypto‐ versus phanerocotyledonar germination, remained conserved during the domestication of all 20 species. Lengths of hypocotyls and epicotyls, of cotyledon petioles, and indices of cotyledon exposure to the aboveground environment changed during evolution under cultivation. However, those changes occurred in diverse directions, depending on the crop species. No common seedling phenotypic convergence in response to domestication was thus detected among the group of species studied here. Also, none of the 20 crops evolved in accordance with our initial hypothesis. Our results reject the idea that strong selective filters exerted unconsciously by artificial selection should have resulted in generalised channelling of seedling morphology towards more productive and more herbivore risky phenotypes. This result opens up unexplored opportunities for directional breeding of seedling traits.  相似文献

I review methodological problems that can lead to false evidence for selection on secondary sexual characters and present a study of selection in rubyspot damselflies (Hetaerina americana) that avoids these pitfalls. Male rubyspots have a large red spot on each wing that grows to a terminal size after sexual maturity. Selection gradient analyses revealed evidence for positive sexual and survival selection on both terminal wing spot size and body size. Phenotype manipulations confirmed that wing spot size was subject to direct sexual selection, but showed that the positive slope of survival on wing spot size was an indirect effect of selection on unmeasured traits. This study provides the strongest evidence yet for sexual selection on coloration in Odonata, but also provides clear examples of why phenotypic selection statistics must be calculated and interpreted cautiously.  相似文献

Summary In vitro, selection is a viable method of selecting herbicide-tolerant crops. This research was to evaluate in vitro selection techniques for enhancing 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid] tolerance in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). In vivo and in vitro responses to 2,4-D of eight diverse red clover populations were correlated (r=0.77), justifying in vitro selection for 2,4-D tolerance. Suspension cultures of a red clover genotype capable of regeneration were plated onto agar-based nutrient media supplemented with 0.18 mM 2,4-D for selection experiments. After two cycles of selection, 16 2,4-D tolerant callus lines were identified based on visual growth assessment. These lines were evaluated for 2,4-D tolerance (based on 2,4-D content), using a 2,4-D bioassay procedure which consisted of placing selected callus tissue pieces on top of oat (Avena sativa L.) coleoptile or internode sections. The relative amount of 2,4-D in the callus tissue was estimated by the amount of oat section elongation after 24 h. Two of the more tolerant callus lines had 61% and 83% less 2,4-D in their tissues than the susceptible control tissue. These studies indicated that in vitro selection can enhance the levels of 2,4-D tolerance in red clover callus tissue.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. 8943  相似文献

Red clover genotypes capable of regenerating plantlets in vitro from non-meristematic tissue-derived callus are rare. Selection for genotypes capable of somatic embryogenesis identified a clone comprised of a group of plantlets regenerated from a hypocotyl-derived callus culture on L2-based media and another group of plantlets originating from crown divisions of the epicotyl-derived plant. The callus-derived plants of this clone were highly regenerative when reintroduced to callus culture, but the epicotyl-derived plants produced nonregenerative callus cultures. F1, F2 and BC1 populations were evaluated to determine the mode of inheritance of the regeneration trait. Reciprocal crosses did not differ, indicating a lack of maternal effects. Results were compatible with genetic control of regeneration by two complementary genes. We propose the genotype Rn1-Rn2- for regenerative plants. Three petiole segment explants were sufficient to evaluate regenerative ability in seedlings. Regenerative ability was often associated with abnormal leaf morphology in a few to several leaves. Particular floral phenotypes are often associated with specific groups of pollinators. However, flowering plants are often visited, and may be effectively pollinated by more than one type of animal. Therefore, a major outstanding question in floral biology asks: what is the nature of selection on floral traits when pollinators are diverse? This study examined how hummingbirds selected on the floral traits of Polemonium brandegeei, a species pollinated by both hummingbirds and hawkmoths. In array populations of P. brandegeei, we measured pollen movement, and female (seeds set) and male (seeds sired) fitness under hummingbird pollination. We then compared the patterns of selection by hummingbirds with our previous study examining selection by hawkmoths. We documented contrasting selection on sex organ positioning through female function, with hummingbirds selecting for stigmas exserted beyond the anthers and hawkmoths selecting for stigmas recessed below the anthers. Furthermore, hummingbirds selected for longer and wider corolla tubes, and hawkmoths selected for narrower corolla tubes. Therefore, contrasting selection by hawkmoths and hummingbirds may account for variation in sex organ arrangements and corolla dimensions in P. brandegeei. We documented how floral traits under selection by multiple pollinators can result in either an intermediate “compromise” between selective pressures (sex organs) or apparent specialization (corolla tube length) to one pollinator.  相似文献

Although plants are generally attacked by a community of several species of herbivores, relatively little is known about the strength of natural selection for resistance in multiple‐herbivore communities—particularly how the strength of selection differs among herbivores that feed on different plant organs or how strongly genetic correlations in resistance affect the evolutionary responses of the plant. Here, we report on a field study measuring natural selection for resistance in a diverse community of herbivores of Solanum carolinense. Using linear phenotypic‐selection analyses, we found that directional selection acted to increase resistance to seven species. Selection was strongest to increase resistance to fruit feeders, followed by flower feeders, then leaf feeders. Selection favored a decrease in resistance to a stem borer. Bootstrapping analyses showed that the plant population contained significant genetic variation for each of 14 measured resistance traits and significant covariances in one‐third of the pairwise combinations of resistance traits. These genetic covariances reduced the plant's overall predicted evolutionary response for resistance against the herbivore community by about 60%. Diffuse (co)evolution was widespread in this community, and the diffuse interactions had an overwhelmingly constraining (rather than facilitative) effect on the plant's evolution of resistance.  相似文献

I measured phenotypic selection of floral traits through both male and female functions of the hermaphroditic flowers of Ipomopsis aggregata (Pursh) V. Grant subsp. aggregata (Polemoniaceae). Fluorescent powdered dyes were used to track movement of pollen by hummingbirds and to measure pollen delivery to individual plants as well as pollen receipt. A phenotypic selection analysis revealed that selection due to male-male competition during pollination was capable of delaying flowering date and widening corolla tubes by 0.22 and 0.24 standard-deviation units, respectively, in a single generation. Several floral traits were highly correlated with each other. Multivariate selection analysis suggested that selection through male function directly favored late flowering as well as a sexual expression characterized by a short pistillate phase and long corollas. Selection intensities through male and female functions were of similar overall magnitude during the pollination stage of the life cycle, but different traits were favored, and selection sometimes acted in opposing directions. In 1985, selection through female function favored increased time spent in the pistillate phase and exserted stigmas (unlike selection through male function). As a result, individual plants varied greatly in functional gender. Plants that had exserted stigmas and narrow corollas and that spent a disproportionately long time in the pistillate phase achieved greater pollination success as females, while plants with the opposite traits achieved greater success as males. Moreover, female pollination success tended to increase, and male pollination success to decrease, with time spent in the pistillate phase, supporting a critical assumption of sex-allocation theory. Selection in the populations studied fluctuated from year to year and was highly sex-specific.  相似文献

Red clover plants, collected from nine widely separated permanent pastures in England and Wales, were tested for sap-transmissible viruses. Viruses were identified by the symptoms they caused in test plants, by electron microscopy, and by serological tests. Of the 265 plants tested 14% were infected. Only pea mosaic virus was common and widespread; it was found in 8% of the plants, and in seven of the fields. Other viruses isolated were arabis mosaic, bean yellow mosaic, red clover mottle, and red clover vein mosaic; only red clover mottle virus produced diagnostic symptoms in red clover. No viruses were detected in seedlings grown from seed from eighty-nine commercial seed crops. Attempts to transmit red clover mottle virus by the Collembolan Sminthurus viridis L., which is common on red clover, failed.  相似文献

Natural selection on juveniles is often invoked as a constraint on adult evolution, but it remains unclear when such restrictions will have their greatest impact. Selection on juveniles could, for example, mainly limit the evolution of adult traits that mostly develop prior to maturity. Alternatively, selection on juveniles might primarily constrain the evolution of adult traits that experience weak or context-dependent selection in the adult stage. Using a comparative study of dragonflies, I tested these hypotheses by examining how a species’ larval habitat was related to the evolution of two adult traits that differ in development and exposure to selection: adult size and male ornamentation. Whereas adult size is fixed at metamorphosis and experiences consistent positive selection in the adult stage, ornaments develop throughout adulthood and provide context-dependent fitness benefits. My results show that species that develop in less stable larval habitats have smaller adult sizes and slower rates of adult size evolution. However, these risky larval habitats do not limit ornament expression or rates of ornament evolution. Selection on juveniles may therefore primarily affect the evolution of adult traits that mostly develop prior to maturity.  相似文献

Morphologically variable F2 genotypes derived from hybridization of coastal and inland ecotypes of the annual plant Diodia teres were used to identify selection on morphological traits in the natural habitat of each ecotype. These ecotypes occur in very different habitats, and have evolved pronounced morphological differentiation. Selection analysis can suggest whether present patterns of selection can explain morphological differences between ecotypes. F2 genotypes were characterized morphologically, clonally replicated, and transplanted into the habitat of each ecotype. Selection was measured on six morphological traits. Directional and stabilizing selection occurred on many traits; direction and strength of selection varied sharply at different stages of growth, as revealed by a path-analysis approach that divided selection into a set of independent components. Directional selection favored traits of the native population at the coastal habitat, but less so at the inland habitat. Selection was of sufficient strength to create the observed morphological differences between ecotypes in 25–100 generations, given constant selection and sufficient genetic variation. In effects on fitness, most traits were neither independent nor consistently interactive with other traits. Rather, many traits entered into strong but evanescent interactions affecting particular components of fitness. Observed interactions did not support the hypothesis that the morphology of each ecotype was functionally integrated to a high degree.  相似文献

Variation in morphological traits and increased disease susceptibility were observed in micropropagated plants of rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum L.), PC49. Our investigations have demonstrated that micropropagated plants can vary substantially in morphological traits and the variation of quantitative traits was substantially greater than conventionally propagated plants. Micropropagated plants produced significantly more leaves than conventional plants under the same growth period, with a more bushy growth habit and/or recumbence. A higher incidence of disease (petiole spotting) was also observed in micropropagated plants. It is concluded that micropropagated PC49 had substantially higher incidence of somaclonal variation and regenerants were not suitable to establish an economic crop comparable to the conventional plants.  相似文献

A protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation with mannose selection was developed for cotyledon petiole, hypocotyl and leaf explants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L. Mill). More than 400 transgenic plants from three tomato varieties were selected with 1% mannose in combination with 0.1–0.5% glucose. Average transformation frequencies ranged from 2.0 to 15.5% depending on the construct, genotype and type of tissue used for transformation. The highest transformation rate was obtained for hypocotyl explants from tomato variety SG048. The ploidy levels of 264 independent transgenic events and 233 non-transgenic plants regenerated from tissue culture were assessed by flow cytometry. The incidence of polyploids within the total population of transgenic plants varied from 10 to 78% and was not significantly different from the non-transgenic population. The greatest variation in the proportion of polyploids was observed in plants derived from different explant types, both in transgenic and non-transgenic regenerants, across three studied genotypes. Transgenic and non-transgenic plants regenerated from leaves included the highest number of normal diploid plants (82–100%), followed by cotyledon petiole-derived plants (63–78%). Transgenic plants produced from hypocotyls contained 22–58% diploids depending on the genotype used in transformation. Results described in this study demonstrate that, although transformation frequencies for leaf tissue are still lower under current protocols, the high percentage of diploids obtained make leaf tissue an attractive transformation target.Abbreviations BAP Benzylaminopurine - MS Murashige-Skoog - MsCHI Medicago sativa chalcone isomerase - PMI Phosphomannose isomerase  相似文献

Phenotypic matches between plants and their pollinators often are interpreted as examples of reciprocal selection and adaptation. For the two co‐occurring plant species, Heliconia bihai and H. caribaea in the Eastern Caribbean, we evaluated for five populations over 2 years the strength and direction of natural selection on corolla length and number of bracts per inflorescence. These plant traits correspond closely to the bill lengths and body masses of their primary pollinators, female or male purple‐throated carib hummingbirds (Eulampis jugularis). In H. bihai, directional selection for longer corollas was always significant with the exception of one population in 1 year, whereas selection on bract numbers was rare and found only in one population in 1 year. In contrast, significant directional selection for more bracts per inflorescence occurred in all three populations of the yellow morph and in two populations of the red morph of H. caribaea, whereas significant directional selection on corolla length occurred in only one population of the red morph and one population of the yellow morph. Selection for longer corollas in H. bihai may result from better mechanical fit, and hence pollination, by the long bills of female E. jugularis, their sole pollinator. In contrast, competition between males of E. jugularis for territories may drive selection for more bracts in H. caribaea. Competitive exclusion of female E. jugularis by territorial males also implicates pollinator competition as a possible ecological mechanism for trait diversification in these plants.  相似文献

Flowering and germination time are components of phenology, a complex phenotype that incorporates a number of traits. In natural populations, selection is likely to occur on multiple components of phenology at once. However, we have little knowledge of how joint selection on several phenological traits influences evolutionary response. We conducted one generation of artificial selection for all combinations of early and late germination and flowering on replicated lines within two independent base populations in the herb Campanula americana. We then measured response to selection and realized heritability for each trait. Response to selection and heritability were greater for flowering time than germination time, indicating greater evolutionary potential of this trait. Selection for earlier phenology, both flowering and germination, did not depend on the direction of selection on the other trait, whereas response to selection to delay germination and flowering was greater when selection on the other trait was in the opposite direction (e.g., early germination and late flowering), indicating a negative genetic correlation between the traits. Therefore, the extent to which correlations shaped response to selection depended on the direction of selection. Furthermore, the genetic correlation between timing of germination and flowering varies across the trait distributions. The negative correlation between germination and flowering time found when selecting for delayed phenology follows theoretical predictions of constraint for traits that jointly determine life history schedule. In contrast, the lack of constraint found when selecting for an accelerated phenology suggests a reduction of the covariance due to strong selection favoring earlier flowering and a shorter life cycle. This genetic architecture, in turn, will facilitate further evolution of the early phenology often favored in warm climates.  相似文献

White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is a key component legume of temperate pasture agriculture and an important target for molecular marker-assisted plant breeding. A genetic map of white clover has been used to assess genetic control of agronomically important traits that vary in the F2(I.4R×I.5J) mapping family. Phenotypic analysis was performed for a range of vegetative morphogenesis traits (such as leaf area, internode length, plant height and plant spread) and reproductive morphogenesis and development traits (such as flowering date, floral intensity and seed yield), with both spatial and temporal replication. A multi-environment combined analysis (combined analysis) has been performed for traits assessed across multiple experimental datasets in order to identify consistent genetic effects. Quantitative trait locus (QTLs) were detected for the majority of traits, and the locations and magnitudes of QTL effects were compared between individual and combined analyses. This molecular genetic dissection of agronomic traits in white clover provides the basis for equivalent studies in more complex populations, design of marker-assisted selection strategies and comparative genetics with model legume species. Selection for QTLs derived from the combined analysis will permit robust improvement of phenotypic traits over different environments.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.
