While sexual communication is often characterized by attempted manipulation, both sexes agree about females reliably signalling their receptivity. Female sexuals of the ant Leptothorax gredleri quickly became unattractive to males after their first copulation. This loss of attractiveness coincided with almost immediate changes in their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles. Already 30 min after mating, the CHC profiles of female sexuals had significantly lower relative amounts of branched alkanes and higher amounts of linear alkanes than those of unmated and freshly mated female sexuals. Discriminant analysis did not distinguish between the profiles of freshly mated and unmated female sexuals, suggesting that the extremely rapid modification of CHC profiles is not caused by males marking females with anti-aphrodisiac CHCs. Instead, the new profile is produced by the female sexuals themselves. In addition to making them unattractive to males, this change may also help mated female sexuals when seeking adoption into established colonies.  相似文献

Every spring, workers of the Argentine Ant Linepithema humile kill a large proportion of queens within their nests. Although this behaviour inflicts a high energetic cost on the colonies, its biological significance has remained elusive so far. An earlier study showed that the probability of a queen being executed is not related to her weight, fecundity, or age. Here we test the hypothesis that workers collectively eliminate queens to which they are less related, thereby increasing their inclusive fitness. We found no evidence for this hypothesis. Workers of a nest were on average not significantly less related to executed queens than to surviving ones. Moreover, a population genetic analysis revealed that workers were not genetically differentiated between nests. This means that workers of a given nest are equally related to any queen in the population and that there can be no increase in average worker–queen relatedness by selective elimination of queens. Finally, our genetic analyses also showed that, in contrast to workers, queens were significantly genetically differentiated between nests and that there was significant isolation by distance for queens.  相似文献

Inclusive fitness benefits depend on recognizing the right individuals to interact with. Social insect nests protect themselves from non-kin intruders through nestmate recognition based on chemical cues. The recognition cues on adult individu- als are from a mixture of genetic and environmental sources, but the ontogeny and use of recognition cues on eggs has not been previously assessed. We studied recognition by workers of eggs that were either nestmates or non-nestmates, and the ontogeny of recognition cues on eggs in the ant Formica fusca, a species with precise egg recognition abilities. Workers were able to dis- criminate among freshly laid eggs with no nest derived cues on them, and the egg surface chemicals varied among nests in these eggs, suggesting that queen derived cues are used in nestmate recognition. The results are discussed in the light of their implica- tions on deceptive social parasite strategies and within colony conflicts  相似文献

The Argentine ant Linepithema humile (Mayr) invaded the Hiroshima Prefecture in south‐west Japan some time before 1990. In this report, we describe the distribution of this exotic ant species and assess its impact on indigenous ant communities in urban areas. L. humile is now widely distributed mainly in urban areas and surrounding secondary vegetation of the cities Hatsukaichi and Hiroshima. The impact assessment suggested that L. humile reduced species diversity of local, indigenous ant communities. There was differential sensitivity of indigenous ant species to the invasion of L. humile. Some ant species disappeared in parks infested with L. humile; for example, Pheidole noda, Pheidole indica and Lasius japonicus. L. humile seemed to be superior to these ant species in certain traits and habits, such as mobility, recruitment ability, aggressiveness and omnivory. In contrast, Paratrechina sakurae and Camponotus vitiosus were less affected by L. humile infestation. The mechanisms allowing such coexistence seemed to be small body size (P. sakurae) and arboreal nesting habits (C. vitiosus).  相似文献

In many social insects the relationship between reproductive dominance and physiological correlates is poorly understood. Recent evidence now strongly suggests that cuticular hydrocarbons are important in reproductive differentiation in these societies where they are used as signals of ovarian activity in reproductive females. In this study we investigated the relationship between reproductive dominance, size of the corpora allata (CA, producer of Juvenile Hormone, JH) and the proportions of cuticular hydrocarbons present on the cuticle in overwintering foundresses and both associative (polygynous) and solitary (monogynous) pre-emergence colonies of the social wasp Polistes dominulus. Size of the CA was positively correlated with ovarian development in polygynous colonies. In contrast, solitary foundresses possessed significantly smaller CAs than dominant foundresses from polygynous nests, yet ovarian activity was similar for both female types. CA size variation was associated with variation in cuticular hydrocarbon proportions. Overwintering, solitary, dominant and subordinate (from associative nests) females all possessed distinctive cuticular chemical profiles revealed by multivariate discriminant analyses. Our data indicate that the social environment strongly affects reproductive physiology in this wasp, and we discuss the role of cuticular hydrocarbons in reproductive signaling in P. dominulus and other social insects.  相似文献

The cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of ants provide important cues for nest-mate and caste recognition. There is enormous diversity in the composition of these CHCs, but the manner in which this diversity has evolved is poorly understood. We gathered data on CHC profiles for 56 ant species, relating this information to their phylogeny. We deduced the mode of evolution of CHC profiles by reconstructing character evolution and then relating the number of changes in CHC components along each branch of the phylogeny to the length of the branch. There was a strong correlation between branch length and number of component changes, with fewer changes occurring on short branches. Our analysis thereby indicated a gradual mode of evolution. Different ant species tend to use specific CHC structural types that are exclusive of other structural types, indicating that species differences may be generated in part by switching particular biosynthetic pathways on or off in different lineages. We found limited, and contradictory, evidence for abiotic factors (temperature and rainfall) driving change in CHC profiles.  相似文献

The distribution of the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, was investigated in 65 cities or towns along the Seto Inland Sea, western Japan in 2003–2005. Our results include all available information of their distribution in Japan until 2005. Argentine ants have invaded Aichi Prefecture (Tahara‐shi), Hyogo Prefecture (Kobe‐shi), Hiroshima Prefecture (Hiroshima‐shi, Fuchu‐cho, Hatsukaichi‐shi, Ono‐cho and Otake‐shi), and Yamaguchi Prefecture (Iwakuni‐shi and Yanai‐shi). The most widespread distribution was found around Hatsukaichi‐shi including the westernmost part of Hiroshima‐shi and the easternmost of Ono‐cho.  相似文献

Reduction in heterozygosity can lead to inbreeding depression. This loss of genetic variability especially affects diverse loci, such as immune genes or those encoding recognition cues. In social insects, nestmates are recognized by their odor, that is their cuticular hydrocarbon profile. Genes underlying hydrocarbon production are thought to be under balancing selection. If so, inbreeding should result in a loss of chemical diversity. We show here that cuticular hydrocarbon diversity decreases with inbreeding. Studying an ant with a facultative inbreeding lifestyle, we found inbred workers to exhibit both a lower number of hydrocarbons and less diverse, that is less evenly proportioned profiles. The association with inbreeding was strong for methyl‐branched alkanes, which play a major role in nestmate recognition, and for n‐alkanes, whereas unsaturated compounds were unaffected. Shifts in allocation strategies with inbreeding in our focal species indicate that these ants can detect their inbreeding level and use this information to adjust their reproductive strategy. Our study is the first to demonstrate that odor profiles can encode information on inbreeding, with broad implications not only for social insects, but for sexual selection and mate choice in general. Odor profiles may constitute an honest signal of inbreeding, a fitness‐relevant trait in many species.  相似文献

Since workers of the ant Aphaenogaster senilis can lay male eggs, reproductive conflict may occur between these workers. We examined the occurrence of worker conflicts in groups of workers either with or without the queen. Intranidal aggression was observed in each nest for 10 min each day, and the immatures produced were counted once a week for two months. Pairs of workers involved in aggression were taken regularly from each nest and used for chemical, morphological and anatomical analyses. The attacker and the attacked workers differed in their cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. The attacker and the attacked ants were at the same middle-aged fertile stage. The attacker ant was significantly larger and more fertile than the attacked ant, and more mature physiologically (poison gland was darker). There was apparently no stable hierarchy between laying workers. In the first weeks under queenless conditions, most eggs and larvae were destroyed, but they were later reared to obtain males. The intranidal worker aggression in this highly evolved ant is discussed in relation to dominance and worker policing. Cuticular hydrocarbons (HCs) play important roles in insect communication but few studies clearly demonstrate the direct link between HCs and nestmate recognition. Therefore, cuticular lipids were extracted from ants, their HC and non-HC fractions as well as the three principal classes of HCs (n-alkanes, branched alkanes and alkenes) were purified and tested using an immobilizing "joust" device which allowed quantification of early pairwise behavioural responses, mandibular opening and antennal retraction, without occurrence of subsequent damages as in classic dyadic encounters. Chemical recognition of ants was studied at three levels of interactions (intra-colonial, intra-specific and inter-specific). Three closely related species already chemically characterized were used: Pachycondyla villosa (Pv), P. inversa (Pi) and P. subversa (Ps). Each species had its own behavioural responses. Moreover, responses of Pi and Ps towards Pv were significantly longer, than they were between themselves whereas Pv ants were equally aggressive towards Pi and Ps. These differences are in agreement with the results of the cluster analysis of the cuticular HCs profiles that place Pi closer to Ps. In support of the idea that components of cuticular lipids profiles are important for recognition, we found that only the HC fraction and its branched subfraction elicited a behavioural response of Ps workers. It is suggested that internally branched methyl- and dimethylalkanes are involved in recognition behaviour.  相似文献

We developed primers for five polymorphic microsatellite loci to analyse the genetic structure of colonies in an invading Argentine ant population located in Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Microsatellite loci were isolated using both a polymerase chain reaction‐based and a cloning‐based method. With a range of 3–18 alleles and expected levels of heterozygosity of 0.46–0.77, these loci provide useful markers for the detection of colony and population structure in new or expanding populations of this species.  相似文献

Carpenter ants (genus Camponotus) have mutualistic, endosymbiotic bacteria of the genus Blochmannia whose main contribution to their hosts is alimentary. It was also recently demonstrated that they play a role in improving immune function as well. In this study, we show that treatment with an antibiotic produces a physiological response inducing an increase in both the quantity of cuticular hydrocarbons and in the melanization of the cuticle probably due to a nutritive and immunological deficit. We suggest that this is because it enhances the protection the cuticle provides from desiccation and also from invasions by pathogens and parasites. Nevertheless, the cuticular hydrocarbon profile is not modified by the antibiotic treatment, which indicates that nestmate recognition is not modified.  相似文献

The facultatively polygynous ant Camponotus yamaokai shows various degrees of internest hostility. We examined the relationship between aggressiveness and possible factors that affect the level of hostility, such as internest distance, numbers of queens and workers, and brood size. We found that the aggression level did not significantly correlate with these factors. Our study suggests that information on the colony genetic structure is important in understanding variation in the aggressiveness of polygynous colonies.  相似文献

Wolbachia pipientis is a maternally transmitted bacterium that often alters the life history of its insect host to maximize transmission to subsequent generations. Here we report on the frequency and distribution of Wolbachia infection in a widespread invasive species, the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile). We screened 1175 individual Argentine ants from 89 nests on five continents and several islands, including numerous locations in both the native (South American) and introduced ranges. We detected Wolbachia in four of 11 native populations, but only one of 21 introduced populations was infected. In the Argentine ant's native range, the distribution of Wolbachia supergroups A and B was nonoverlapping. By coupling infection frequency data with behaviourally defined colony boundaries, we show that infected and uninfected colonies are often adjacent to one another, supporting the proposition that little female-mediated gene flow occurs among Argentine ant colonies. We also conduct a phylogenetic analysis, and show that the Wolbachia infecting both native and introduced populations of Argentine ants belong to two lineages that appear to be specialized on infecting New World ants. One other lineage of Wolbachia has undergone frequent, recent episodes of horizontal transmission between distantly related, introduced insect hosts.  相似文献

In social insects, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play an important role in nestmate discrimination processes, but young individuals are usually not discriminated. We studied CHC changes in young workers of the social wasp Polistes dominulus. A quantitative estimation demonstrated that total quantities of CHCs increased after emergence, with branched alkanes increasing drastically when compared with other classes of hydrocarbons. The relative quantity of longer-chain compounds increased with respect to shorter ones; unsaturated compounds decreased. These changes might reduce the capacity of the cuticle to acquire compounds of environmental origin. We then tested whether individuals acquire hydrocarbons from the environment, and whether this capability equally characterises newly emerged and mature wasps. We exposed wasps of two age classes (adults younger or older than 24 h) to four linear hydrocarbons in turn, and observed how nestmates reacted to their re-introduction into the natal colony. Exposed young wasps elicited significantly more aggressive responses than control sisters; but treated wasps older than 24 h were generally accepted by nestmates. Chemical assays showed that exposed young wasps readily absorbed hydrocarbons; older ones did not incorporate hydrocarbons, suggesting that the chemical profiles of mature wasps are less prone to chemical shifts than those of newly emerged wasps.  相似文献

Alate female reproductives of the facultatively polygynous andpolydomous ant, Lepiothorax curuispinosus, were reared fromfield-collected nests, mated, and introduced into either theirparental nests or alien conspecific nests. The 41 queens introducedinto alien nests were usually attacked and rejected (97. 6%),but one queen was accepted after initial aggression. The 27queens introduced into their parental nests received a variableresponse. Some were accepted without any apparent aggression(59. 3%), but others were strongly attacked and rejected (40.7%). Sequential introductions of up to four queens into particularparental nests indicated that nests consistently either acceptor reject their mated offspring. The presence or absence ofresident queens in parental nests had no apparent influenceon the acceptance of offspring queens. Nests that accepted queenshad significantly fewer workers than those that did not, butthis slight difference is unlikely to explain these dichotomousresults and could be spurious. Dissections of the introducedqueens revealed that 79. 0% were inseminated and 98. 3% haddeveloping, yolked eggs in their ovarioles, but these variableshad no apparent effect on acceptability. Similarly, the sizeof the introduced queens and the time that elapsed between matingand introduction had no apparent effect. The consistent responseof parental nests in either accepting or rejecting their matedoffspring indicates a mechanism of queen number regulation inthis species that involves characteristics of the colony ornest rather than variability among offspring queens. This mechanismcould be responsible for maintaining relatively low numbersof queens and high genetic relatedness in colonies (or individualnests) while promoting flexibility in colony reproduction bycolony fission ("budding") and the dispersal of young queens. This mechanism could also involve an important conflict of interestbetween parental colonies and their mated offspring and mightcontribute to the evolution of socially parasitic colony foundationstrategies. Acceptance of mated offspring by their parentalcolonies might only occur during certain periods in colony development, depend on the level of genetic diversity within the colony (ornest), reflect the condition of the colony, nest, queen(s),brood, or local habitat, or result from a genetic polymorphism.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Many ant species abandon foraging and retreat underground when parasitoids in the dipteran family Phoridae are present. Although the influence of phorids on ant foraging is well documented, their influence on interspecific competition is less studied. This study examined whether phorids influenced the competitive ability of host ants in the genus Linepithema at two sites in Brazil.
2. The phorid Pseudacteon lontrae attacked Linepithema piliferum at one site, while the phorid Pseudacteon pusillus attacked an unknown Linepithema ( Linepithema sp.) at the other site. Phorid parasitoids of Linepithema were far more common than phorids of other ant species.
3. Despite a high abundance of phorids, it was difficult to conclude that they influenced competition. Captures in pitfall traps indicated that host Linepithema were most active during times of day when phorids were inactive.
4. Camponotus rufipes and Brachymyrmex sp., the most common competitors of Linepithema sp. (60% of all interactions), dominated Linepithema sp. during the day regardless of phorids. Remaining ant species could not be evaluated individually because they interacted with Linepithema sp. infrequently.
5. Ectatomma brunneum was the most common competitor of L. piliferum (58% of all interactions). The high abundance of phorids at this site made it impossible to evaluate interactions between E. brunneum and L. piliferum in the absence of phorids.
6. Phorids seldom influenced exploitative competition by causing host Linepithema to abandon the bait when no ant competitors were present.  相似文献

Some aspects of the biology of Crematogaster pygmaea, a highly polydomous and polygynous ant, are more commonly found in monogynous species. One such characteristic is the high attractiveness of its queens. In this study, this attractiveness was assessed under varying experimental conditions to investigate the factors responsible for its expression and variation, and to identify the nature of queen attractiveness. It was shown (1) that C. pygmaea queens are highly attractive to the workers that cluster on and around them (retinue), (2) that the attractiveness of C. pygmaea queens is context-dependent, i.e., it increases with increasing degree of potential danger to the queen, (3) that the attractiveness signal of C. pygmaea queens is chemically based, and (4) that this signal is persistent and apparently not colony-specific. The proposed hypothesis is that the C. pygmaea queens constantly release an attractiveness signal that is “read” by the workers, in a dependent way linked to the context, and that the main function of this attractiveness is to protect queens. This protection would have a high adaptive value in the context of the social structure and the reproductive strategies in C. pygmaea.  相似文献

Abstract.  Little attention has been given to the effect of physiological limitations on the ability of introduced species to invade ecological communities. In the present study, the water balance of the invasive Argentine ant ( Linepithema humile ) is compared with five common ant species native to southern California. Total and critical water contents are measured, as well as rates of water loss and survival times. The results show that the body size of ant species has a strong effect on water balance, explaining between 99% of total and 90% of critical water content (i.e. the amount of water remaining when the ant becomes moribund). The measured survival times at 40 °C and approximately 0% relative humidity are shorter for L. humile than for the other five native ant species. The area-independent water-loss rate is higher for L. humile than for the other native ant species studied. This finding is corroborated by independent data using two different methods (i.e. gravimetric measurement and open-flow respirometry). Somewhat surprisingly, significant differences in the water-loss rates of different sizes of Solenopsis xyloni workers are found, even after adjusting for surface area. The area-independent water-loss rate is significantly lower for larger than for smaller workers. Consistent with circumstantial evidence from the field, the results suggest that the physiological constraints of invasive species, such as water-loss rates and critical water content, can limit their distribution and abundance not only at regional scales, but also at fine scales.  相似文献
