Amblyomma incisum Neumann is a major tick species in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Tapir is the main host for adult ticks and a high aggressiveness of nymphs to humans has been reported. In this work data on the biology and life cycle of this tick species is presented for the first time. It was shown that horse is a suitable host for A. incisum adults and rabbit for larvae and nymphs. It was also shown that A. incisum is a big tick species (mean engorged female weight of 1.96 g) with a long life cycle which lasts 262.3 days when maintained at 27°C and 85% RH. These laboratory conditions were, however, inappropriate and egg hatching rate (1.2%) was very low. Nevertheless egg hatching of ticks in a forest patch increased considerably (72.2%) indicating that this A. incisum population is highly dependent on a forest-like environment.  相似文献

The fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae), invaded Japan from North America about 60 years ago. Immediately after its invasion – and for the first three decades – its life cycle was bivoltine, two generations per year throughout its entire distribution in Japan. Thereafter, its life cycle shifted to trivoltine in the southwestern areas of Japan. In the present study we examined the life-history traits proposed to be implicated in this event with the aim of clarifying the mechanism of this life-cycle shift. The critical photoperiod for diapause induction, as defined by the photoperiod at which 50% of individuals enter diapause, was shorter in the trivoltine populations than in their bivoltine counterparts. The temperature sensitivity of the photoperiodic response, as defined by the difference in the critical photoperiod between 20 and 25°C, was greater in the trivoltine populations than in the bivoltine ones. The geographic variation in larval and pupal periods was positively correlated to the latitude of the original localities of the populations. The change in the number of larval instars would be one of the main factors accounting for the regional differences in the developmental period. These results suggest that some life-history traits of H. cunea have changed following its invasion of Japan as an adaptive response to local climates.  相似文献

Field observations and inoculation experiments revealed that Uromyces appendiculatus var. azukicola has an autoecious and macrocyclic life cycle and produces spermogonia, aecia, uredinia, and telia on Vigna angularis var. angularis and V. angularis var. nipponensis. From inoculation experiments, it was suggested that this rust fungus has different host relationships from other varieties. To prepare homologous DNA fragments as restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers, the genes encoding phenol oxidase, chitinase, and xylanase were amplified from genomic DNA of Rosellinia necatrix strains. RFLP analysis using the amplified DNA fragments as probe was carried out, with segregation of the markers among two sets of F1 progenies isolated from an independent perithecium. RFLP was frequently found using rpo1 as the RFLP marker among strains of R. necatrix, which was isolated from single ascospores and the circumference of the perithecium. In each set, RFLPs of some F1 progenies were different from that of the parent strain. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) also revealed that several strains, which were of different genotypes from the parent strain, were contained in the single ascospore culture isolated from the same perithecium. From these results, it is suggested that another strain, which was genetically different, was required for mating and development of the ascus in R. necatrix. Therefore, the life cycle in R. necatrix was presumed to be heterothallism. This is the first report about a heterothallic life cycle in R. necatrix.  相似文献

Although the calcareous algae Renalcis and Epiphyton, which were main reef-constructors at the end of the Late Proterozoic, beginning of the Cambrian, and, partially, in the Devonian, long attracted the attention of scientists, their nature long remained enigmatic. Numerous revisions inclined to the opinion that Renalcis only existed and considered Chabakovia, Shuguria, Izhella, and even Epiphyton as synonyms of the former genus. However, convincing proofs for this conclusion were lacking. I propose a new morphological interpretation of the Renalcis group, based on Gemma with its unique preservation of monospores within the colony, which overgrew outside the colony first in Korilophyton and then in Epiphyton. It was concluded that the life cycle of Epiphyton included heteromorphous stages of Renalcis (Izhella), Chabakovia (Shuguria), Gemma, and dendroid Korilophyton.  相似文献

Polyphenism, which allows a single genotype to express multiple discrete phenotypes in response to environmental cues, is an adaptive trait in heterogeneous environments. Pond hydroperiod is an important ecological parameter affecting amphibian life history, and variation in local pond hydrology has been hypothesized to play a role in species divergence via changes in polyphenism. The eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) expresses life cycle polyphenism. Larvae develop along three possible pathways: metamorphosis to aquatic lunged adult via a terrestrial juvenile (eft) stage, metamorphosis directly to an aquatic lunged adult, or maturation directly to an aquatic gilled adult without metamorphosis (i.e., paedomorphosis). Subspecies of N. viridescens vary in their polyphenic patterns, suggesting possible adaptation to different environments. However, no studies have experimentally tested how genetic and environmental components contribute to the observed differences among subspecies and whether such differences may facilitate divergence. We tested whether adaptation to local pond hydrology via polyphenic changes existed among subspecies by rearing larvae of three subspecies (N. v. dorsalis, N. v. louisianensis, and N. v. viridescens) along three hydroperiod regimes (short, long, and constant) in outdoor artificial ponds. We found that larval N. v. viridescens obligately metamorphosed to efts under all hydroperiods, whereas N. v. dorsalis and N. v. louisianensis exhibited plasticity: larvae metamorphosed to efts under drying conditions but metamorphosed directly to aquatic adults or became paedomorphic in constant water. Also, N. v. viridescens metamorphosed to efts faster and at a smaller body size than the other two subspecies. These data suggest that subspecies of N. viridescens are adapted to different pond hydroperiods, supporting the potential for polyphenism to facilitate divergence. Canalizing selection for certain alternative phenotypes within a single species in which other populations remain plastic may play an important role in the initiation of ecological divergence.  相似文献

Rhodospirillum rubrum is among the bacteria that can assimilate acetate in the absence of isocitrate lyase, the key enzyme of glyoxylate shunt. Previously we have suggested the functioning of a new anaplerotic cycle of acetate assimilation in this bacterium: citramalate cycle, where acetyl-CoA is oxidized to glyoxylate. This work has demonstrated the presence of all the key enzymes of this cycle in R. rubrum extracts: citramalate synthase catalyzing condensation of acetyl-CoA and pyruvate with the formation of citramalate, mesaconase forming mesaconate from L-citramalate, and the enzymes catalyzing transformation of propionyl-CoA + glyoxylate 3-methylmalyl-CoA ? mesaconyl-CoA. At the same time, R. rubrum synthesizes crotonyl-CoA carboxylase/reductase, which is the key enzyme of ethylmalonyl-CoA pathway discovered recently in Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Physiological differences between the citramalate cycle and the ethylmalonyl-CoA pathway are discussed.  相似文献

A rust species on Calystegia soldanella in Japan has been treated as Puccinia convolvuli to date. However, morphological characteristics of specimens on C. soldanella collected from Japan are significantly different from those of specimens on other Calystegia and Convolvulus species from different areas of the world. It is proved by inoculation experiment that the rust on C. soldanella is specific to C. soldanella. Based on these results, Puccinia rust on C. soldanella from Japan is described as a new species, Puccinia calystegiae-soldanellae.  相似文献

The minimum life cycle of Dermacentor silvarum Olenev had a mean duration of 87.5 days (range 74–102 days) under laboratory conditions [(27±1 °C), 70% RH, 6 L: 18 D]. The mean time in (days) for the different stages of its cycle was as follows: incubation period of eggs was 15.3 days; prefeeding, feeding and premoulting periods of larvae and nymphs averaged 5.5, 4.0 and 7.3 days, and 5.2, 5.0 and 14.6 days, respectively; prefeeding, feeding, preoviposition and oviposition periods of female adults lasted for 7.8, 4.5, 4.3 and 14.0 days, respectively. There existed a highly significant correlation between engorged body weight of females and egg masses laid (r = 0.9877, p<0.001). The reproductive efficiency index (REI) and reproductive fitness index (RFI) in females were 11.09 and 9.58, respectively. No relationship between nymphal engorged body weight and resultant sexes was observed. Delayed feeding and non-oviposition (in June and July) existed in females, and low temperature (−10 °C) treatment for 45 days could terminate oviposition diapause. However, the egg masses laid by post-diapause females were significantly smaller than those laid by females engorged in March, April and May.  相似文献

In this paper, the causes of early embryo abortion in the reciprocal crosses between Phaseolus vulgaris L. (a cultivar) and Phaseolus coccineus L. (a wild form) were studied. Methacrylate resin sections, 3–5 μm thick, of 3 to 14 day-old seeds were used to examine the embryo developmental stages and the state of seed tissue. It was observed that, embryos aborted at different developmental stages (globular to early cotyledon) depending on the maternal parent. The use of P. coccineus cytoplasm resulted in a higher number of abortion than in reciprocal crosses. Many of them took place between 5 and 6 days after pollination (DAP). Histological analyses permitted to observe that the embryo development was slower in the cross between P. coccineus and P. vulgaris, compared to parental seeds. It would be related to a deficient endosperm development in reciprocal crosses and, in some extent, hypertrophy of the suspensor might be the main cause of early embryo abortion. Then, it would be practical to overcome this incompatibility by rescuing the embryo at the globular stage of development.  相似文献

We investigated the development of Aurelia (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) during embryogenesis and metamorphosis into a polyp, using antibody markers combined with confocal and transmission electron microscopy. Early embryos form actively proliferating coeloblastulae. Invagination is observed during gastrulation. In the planula, (1) the ectoderm is pseudostratified with densely packed nuclei arranged in a superficial and a deep stratum, (2) the aboral pole consists of elongated ectodermal cells with basally located nuclei forming an apical organ, which is previously only known from anthozoan planulae, (3) endodermal cells are large and highly vacuolated, and (4) FMRFamide-immunoreactive nerve cells are found exclusively in the ectoderm of the aboral region. During metamorphosis into a polyp, cells in the planula endoderm, but not in the ectoderm, become strongly caspase 3 immunoreactive, suggesting that the planula endoderm, in part or in its entirety, undergoes apoptosis during metamorphosis. The polyp endoderm seems to be derived from the planula ectoderm in Aurelia, implicating the occurrence of “secondary” gastrulation during early metamorphosis.  相似文献

To investigate the life history and ecology of the mudskipper Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus, observations and collection were made on coastal mudflats in southern Korea. Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus was active from May to September on the mudflats, exclusively occupying rough and elevated or sloped mudflats of the seashore or the stream mouth, usually vegetated with halophilous grasses. The congeneric species, P. modestus, mainly occurred on extensive low-elevation and level mudflats with no visible vegetation. An apparent alternation of habitat use by P. modestus took place on mudflats at the stream mouth in mid-October, when P. magnuspinnatus began wintering in its burrow and P. modestus came onto the vacated mudflats to construct burrows for wintering. The active season for P. magnuspinnatus at 17°C or higher air temperature was a little shorter than that of P. modestus. Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus constructed a burrow for the entire season in the highest area of the intertidal mudflat, where they hid themselves during high tide or when frightened, whereas P. modestus were likely to use any burrow constructed by other animals or sunken places to hide. The main stomach contents of P. magnuspinnatus were crabs and gammarids. During the reproductive season from May to July, P. magnuspinnatus performed mating behaviors and constructed a spawning burrow similar to the ones known for P. modestus, except their body color turned dark and quivering body movements were observed in the mature male instead of a pink or orange body color and wiggling body movements as in P. modestus. Eggs, measuring 1.56–1.69 mm in major axis and 0.94–1.0 mm in minor axis, were laid on the ceiling and the side wall of the “J”-shaped spawning room generally known for Periophthalmus species. Plasmodiphora brassicae is a soil-borne obligate parasite. The pathogen has three stages in its life cycle: survival in soil, root hair infection, and cortical infection. Resting spores of P. brassicae have a great ability to survive in soil. These resting spores release primary zoospores. When a zoospore reaches the surface of a root hair, it penetrates through the cell wall. This stage is termed the root hair infection stage. Inside root hairs the pathogen forms primary plasmodia. A number of nuclear divisions occur synchronously in the plasmodia, followed by cleavage into zoosporangia. Later, 4–16 secondary zoospores are formed in each zoosporangium and released into the soil. Secondary zoospores penetrate the cortical tissues of the main roots, a process called cortical infection. Inside invaded roots cells, the pathogen develops into secondary plasmodia which are associated with cellular hypertrophy, followed by gall formation in the tissues. The plasmodia finally develop into a new generation of resting spores, followed by their release back into soil as survival structures. In vitro dual cultures of P. brassicae with hairy root culture and suspension cultures have been developed to provide a way to nondestructively observe the growth of this pathogen within host cells. The development of P. brassicae in the hairy roots was similar to that found in intact plants. The observations of the cortical infection stage suggest that swelling of P. brassicae-infected cells and abnormal cell division of P. brassicae-infected and adjacent cells will induce hypertrophy and that movement of plasmodia by cytoplasmic streaming increases the number of P. brassicae-infected cells during cell division.  相似文献

Eretmocerus sp. nr. furuhashii (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) is an indigenous parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)(Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) from southern China; the effects of constant temperatures on the life history of E. sp. nr. furuhashii were examined in the laboratory. The developmental period ranged from 39.2 days at 20°C to 12.40 days at 32°C. A total of 263.4 degree-days were required to complete development with a lower developmental threshold temperature of 11.1°C. Of the eggs produced, 59.3% completed development at 20°C with completion increasing to 71.5% at 26°C. Adult female longevity was 10.8 days at 20°C and 5.2 days at 32°C while the mean daily offspring reproduced per female was highest at 29°C with 5.9 offspring. Adult oviposition peaked three days after emergence at 26, 29 and 32°C, and four days post-emergence at 20°C and 23°C. The total numbers of offspring produced per female ranged from 25.7 individuals at 32°C to 41.1 individuals at 20°C. The sex ratio had a female bias and ranged from 0.72 at 17°C to 0.51 at 35°C. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.1727 at 29°C followed with 0.1606 at 32°C. Results indicated that E. sp. nr. furuhashii reaches its maximum biological potential at temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C.  相似文献

This study examines the ventilatory physiology of the numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus), a small to medium-sized (550 g) termitivorous marsupial. Ventilatory parameters at thermoneutrality reflect the slightly low (83% of predicted) basal metabolic rate of the numbat, with ventilation frequency (ƒR; 30.6±3.65 breaths min–1), tidal volume [VT; 6.0±0.66 ml at body temperature and pressure, saturated (BTPS)] and consequently minute volume (VI; 117.7±15.22 ml min–1; BTPS) all being 80–87% of that expected for a marsupial of similar body mass. Oxygen extraction was 27.7±1.37% in the thermoneutral zone. As is typical of marsupials, numbats accommodated increased oxygen consumption rates at ambient temperatures (T a) below the thermoneutral zone by increasing minute volume (up to 411.2±43.98 ml min–1; BTPS at T a=10 °C) rather than oxygen extraction. Pentatricopeptide repeat proteins (PPRPs) constitute one of the largest superfamilies in plants, with more than 440 identified in the Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh genome. While some PPRPs are known to take part in organelle gene expression, little is known about the broader biological contexts of PPRP gene function. Here, using developmental- and reverse-genetic approaches, we demonstrate that a number of PPRPs are essential early in plant development. We have characterized the Arabidopsis embryo-defective175 mutant and identified the EMB175 gene. Emb175 consistently displays aberrant cell organization and undergoes morphological arrest before the globular-heart transition. The emb175 mutation disrupts an intronless open reading frame encoding a predicted chloroplast-localized PPR protein— the first to be rigorously associated with an early embryo-lethal phenotype. To determine if other PPRP genes act in embryogenesis, we searched Arabidopsis insertion mutant collections for pprp knockout alleles, and identified 29 mutants representing 11 loci potentially associated with embryo-defective phenotypes. We assessed gene structures, T-DNA insertion position, and allelism for these loci and were able to firmly establish essential functions for six PPRP genes in addition to EMB175. Interestingly, Nomarski DIC microscopy revealed diverse embryonic defects in these lines, ranging from early lethality to dramatic late-stage morphological defects such as enlarged shoot apices and stunted cotyledons. Together, emb175 and these pprp knockout mutants establish essential roles for PPRPs in embryogenesis, thus broadening the known organismal context for PPRP gene function. The diversity of emb–pprp knockout phenotypes indicates that mutation of different PPRPs can, directly or indirectly, have distinct impacts on embryo morphogenesis.  相似文献
