Entry, revisited     
How can an individual reenter a society of which he has never truly been a member? What does the PRI miss in assuming that the individual offender is the only potentially successful site for intervention? Drawing on his personal experience as an educator in prisons, public schools, and the PRI, the author argues that education in the PRI can best be understood in relation to educational segregation in society as a whole. As such, any successful approach to reentry must begin with a consideration of entry, and a renewed commitment by established institutions of the dominant culture to address racial segregation and the segregation of former prisoners alike.  相似文献

Abstract

Drugs used for the treatment and prevention of malaria are often plagued by the problem of development of resistance. This has hampered their therapeutic efficiency and rendered them ineffective for monotherapy. However, if re-packaged and combined properly, many of these neglected anti-malarial drugs can possibly find their way back into the treatment regime. The present study evaluates the use of curcumin (CC) and primaquine (PRI) as an anti-malarial combination, packaged within niosomes, in comparison to their respective monotherapy options. It was observed that in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice, mice treated with a combination of 35?mg/kg of CC along with either 5?mg/kg or 1?mg/kg body weight of PRI demonstrated 100% anti-malarial activity and survivability beyond 20 days. The niosome-based PRI–CC combination therapy provided increased protection and survival rate that was associated with prevention in recrudescence. The findings of the study suggest that niosome-based PRI–CC combination therapy may be a promising approach in the treatment of malaria.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence suggesting a link between ADHD and criminality, including a strong association between ADHD symptoms and the likelihood of being on probation or in prison. Most studies investigating the prevalence of ADHD in prison populations have focused on adult male offenders. In the current study, 69 female prisoners were screened for both childhood and adult ADHD symptoms using the Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale-IV. The results indicate that 41 % of the prisoners met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD in childhood and continued to meet criteria for ADHD as adults. More importantly, young female prisoners (aged 18–25) were significantly more likely to report symptoms of ADHD than older prisoners. Prisoners who reported symptoms of ADHD also reported high levels of impairment associated with these symptoms. A better understanding of the prevalence of ADHD in female prison units can highlight specific areas for intervention during rehabilitation, as well as the management of serious incidents within prison.  相似文献

Human placental ribonuclease inhibitor (PRI), a 50-kDa tight-binding inhibitor of angiogenin and pancreatic ribonuclease, consists predominantly of 7 internal repeats, each 57 residues long. Repeats 3 plus 4 (residues 144-257) or repeat 6 (residues 315-371) can be deleted to give mutant proteins, PRI delta 3-4 and PRI delta 6, respectively, that retain inhibitory activity [Lee, F. S., & Vallee, B. L. (1990) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 87, 1879-1883]. We describe here the isolation and characterization of these two active mutant proteins. Both inhibit the enzymatic activities of either angiogenin or bovine pancreatic ribonuclease A (RNase A) with a 1:1 stoichiometry, and the mode of inhibition of RNase A by either is competitive. PRI delta 3-4 binds to angiogenin and RNase A with Ki values of 0.72 and 170 pM, respectively The corresponding values for PRI delta 6 are 22 and 43 pM, respectively. Since recombinant PRI to angiogenin and RNase A with Ki values of 0.29 and 68 fM, respectively, deletion of repeats 3 plus 4 weakens both interactions 2500-fold while deletion of repeat 6 weakens them 76,000- and 630-fold, respectively. Therefore, either the deletion of these repeats has altered the conformation of the angiogenin/RNase binding site in PRI or the deleted repeats contribute directly to the binding site, or both. In addition, the tighter binding to angiogenin versus RNase A seen with native PRI has been preserved in PRI delta 3-4 but has been almost completely abolished in PRI delta 6.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Efficient methods for accurate and meaningful high-throughput plant phenotyping are limiting the development and breeding of stress-tolerant crops. A number of emerging techniques, specifically remote sensing methods, have been identified as promising tools for plant phenotyping. These remote sensing methods can be used to accurately and rapidly relate variations in leaf optical properties with important plant characteristics, such as chemistry, morphology, and photosynthetic properties at the leaf and canopy scales. In this study, we explored the potential to utilize optical (λ = 500–2,400 nm) near-surface remote sensing reflectance spectroscopy to evaluate the effects of ozone pollution on photosynthetic capacity of soybean (Glycine max Merr.). The research was conducted at the Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment (SoyFACE) facility where we subjected plants to ambient (44 nL L?1) and elevated ozone (79–82 nL L?1 target) concentrations throughout the growing season. Exposure to elevated ozone resulted in a significant loss of productivity, with the ozone-treated plants displaying a ~30 % average decrease in seed yield. From leaf reflectance data, it was also clear that elevated ozone decreased leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll content as well as the photochemical reflectance index (PRI), an optical indicator of the epoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle pigments and thus physiological status. We assessed the potential to use leaf reflectance properties and partial least-squares regression (PLSR) modeling as an alternative, rapid approach to standard gas exchange for the estimation of the maximum rates of RuBP carboxylation (V c,max), an important parameter describing plant photosynthetic capacity. While we did not find a significant impact of ozone fumigation on V c,max, standardized to a reference temperature of 25 °C, the PLSR approach provided accurate and precise estimates of V c,max across ambient plots and ozone treatments (r 2 = 0.88 and RMSE = 13.4 μmol m?2 s?1) based only on the variation in leaf optical properties and despite significant variability in leaf nutritional status. The results of this study illustrate the potential for combining the phenotyping methods used here with high-throughput genotyping methods as a promising approach for elucidating the basis for ozone tolerance in sensitive crops.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) for assessing plant photosynthetic performance throughout the plant life cycle. The relationships between PRI, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and leaf pigment indices in Solanum melongena L. (aubergine; eggplant) were studied using photosynthetic induction curves both in short-term (diurnal) and long-term (seasonal) periods under different light intensities. We found good correlations between PRI/non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and PRI/electron transport rate (ETR) in the short term at the same site of a single leaf but these relationships did not hold throughout the life of the plant. In general, changes in PRI owing to NPQ or ETR variations in the short term were <20?% of those that occurred with leaf aging. Results also showed that PRI was highly correlated to plant pigments, especially chlorophyll indices measured by spectral reflectance. Moreover, relationships of steady-state PRI/ETR and steady-state PRI/photochemical yield of photosystem II (Φ(PSII)) measured at uniform light intensity at different life stages proved that overall photosynthesis capacity and steady-state PRI were better correlated through chlorophyll content than NPQ and xanthophylls. The calibrated PRI index accommodated these pigments effects and gave better correlation with NPQ and ETR than PRI. Further studies of PRI indices based on pigments other than xanthophylls, and studies on PRI mechanisms in different species are recommended.  相似文献

Temporary day labor agencies (commonly referred to as “day labor halls”) are privately run companies external to the formal Prison Re-Entry Industry (PRI). However, they frequently provide entry-level employment for recent, frequent, and reformed felons. All spaces associated with day labor employment are rigidly controlled and caught in a visual contradiction. While laborers are completely visible to the day labor halls for the purposes of surveillance, observation, evaluation, and ultimately control, they are simultaneously rendered invisible and hidden from the view of society at large. For day laborers with felony records, the duality is intensified. Once released from prison, former prisoners enter spaces under the view and control of law enforcement within the formal PRI system. Further, their world continues to be viewed, restricted, and controlled by privately owned day labor halls where over 50% of potential workers are felons. By examining the spatialities of the daily working lives of day laborers and their (im)mobility as they navigate difficult spatialities, it is possible to comprehend some of the major hurdles of re-entry. The spatialities of the everyday life of felons continue as restricted spaces for a “captive population” even beyond the prison walls and beyond the formal systems of the PRI.  相似文献

The use of the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) as a promising proxy of light use efficiency (LUE) has been extensively studied, and some issues have been identified, notably the sensitivity of PRI to leaf pigment composition and the variability in PRI response to LUE because of stress. In this study, we introduce a method that enables us to track the short‐term PRI response to LUE changes because of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) changes. The analysis of these short‐term relationships between PRI and LUE throughout the growing season in two species (Quercus robur L. and Fagus sylvatica L.) under two different soil water statuses showed a clear change in PRI response to LUE, which is related to leaf pigment content. The use of an estimated or approximated PRI0, defined as the PRI of perfectly dark‐adapted leaves, allowed us to separate the PRI variability due to leaf pigment content changes and the physiologically related PRI variability over both daily (PAR‐related) and seasonal (soil water content‐related) scales. The corrected PRI obtained by subtracting PRI0 from the PRI measurements showed a good correlation with the LUE over both of the species, soil water statuses and over the entire growing season.  相似文献

A recent empirical study by Turner and Chao on the evolution of competitive interactions among phage virus strains revealed that a strain grown at high rates of co‐infection evolved towards lowered fitness relative to an ancestral strain. The authors went on to show that the fitness pay‐off matrix between the evolved and ancestral strain conforms to the prisoners’ dilemma. In this paper, I use Turner and Chao’s data to parameterize a simple model of parasite collective action. The prisoners’ dilemma is based on pairwise interactions of a discrete cooperate/defect nature. In contrast, the collective action model explicitly deals with individual–group interactions where the extent of cooperation is a continuous variable. I argue here that the ‘collective action’ modelling approach is more appropriate than the prisoners’ dilemma for the biology of virus evolution, and hence better able to form a predictive framework for further work on related strains of virus, linking mixing ecology, cooperative phenotype and fitness. Furthermore, the collective action model is used to motivate discussion on the evolutionary ecology of viruses, with a focus on the ‘levels of selection’ debate and the evolution of virulence.  相似文献

Tordyliopsis brunonis (Apiaceae) is cytologically investigated here for the first time from India. The chromosome count of 2n = 33, ascertained here, represents a new intraspecific triploid cytotype in the species, supplementing the earlier report of a diploid cytotype with 2n = 22 from Nepal Himalayas. The diploid chromosome count (n = 11) has also been found in some of the presently investigated individuals which showed perfectly normal meiosis with 100 % pollen fertility and normal seed set. However, the individuals with triploid chromosome count showed irregular meiotic behaviour and abnormal microsporogenesis resulting in high pollen sterility (56.26 %) and no seed set. The irregular meiotic behaviour in the triploid individuals is attributed to the occurrence of variable number of univalents (1–7) at diakinesis and metaphase-I. In the subsequent meiotic stages, these univalents lagged at anaphases and constituted micronuclei in sporads. The triploid plants were also observed for natural propagation and it was noticed that no seeds were set. These plants were noticed to propagate vegetatively by rootstocks. Chromosomal pairing in triploid cytotype is typical of an allopolyploid. Based on the characterization of chromosomal pairing during meiosis, we assumed that the triploid individuals are probably alloploid in nature. Hypotheses concerning the possible origin of allotriploid in T. brunonis are also discussed.  相似文献

Ecological Footprint accounting is used to track human demand on the Earth's biological resource flows, and compares that demand with the Earth's capacity to generate these flows. It is an evolving tool which has undergone many improvements alongside advancements in science and in response to critical review. Here we respond to van den Bergh and Grazi's recent points of criticism toward Ecological Footprint accounting. While the authors suggest that new criticism is accumulating, the main issues appear to be the same. We suggest that the majority of the criticism is derived from the misconception that the Ecological Footprint measures land “use,” which cannot exceed land availability. In response to these criticisms, we aim here to summarize and further clarify the major points of debate and confusion and allow readers to determine the relevance of these issues. We conclude that much of the prior discussion and many of the points repeated here reflect a divergence in general philosophical or semantic perspectives.  相似文献

This article examines why U.S. healthcare professionals became involved in “enhanced interrogation,” or torture, during the War on Terror. A number of factors are identified including a desire on the part of these professionals to defend their country and fellow citizens from future attack; having their activities approved and authorized by legitimate command structures; financial incentives; and wanting to prevent serious harm from occurring to prisoners/detainees. The factors outlined here suggest that psychosocial factors can influence health professionals’ ethical decision-making.  相似文献

Recent innovations in the briquetting of carbonized biomass have the potential to improve the efficacy of papyrus as a fuel source. Selective harvesting of only mature stems may prove more sustainable than experimental clear-cutting approaches to regeneration pursued in earlier studies, whilst still providing up to 90 % of available biomass. Briquettes produced from papyrus compare favourably with alternative local fuels, both in physical properties and from the perspectives of potential end-users. Papyrus wetlands at Lake Naivasha, Kenya, may have the potential to provide 1.5 × 109 cuboid briquettes (volume c. 90 cm3; weight c. 25 g) from a biannual harvest, satisfying the domestic fuel requirements of > 85 % of the District’s population whilst simultaneously reducing pressure on forests exploited for the production of wood charcoal.  相似文献

Relationships between gross primary productivity (GPP) and the remotely sensed photochemical reflectance index (PRI) suggest that time series of foliar PRI may provide insight into climate change effects on carbon cycling. However, because a large fraction of carbon assimilated via GPP is quickly returned to the atmosphere via respiration, we ask a critical question—can PRI time series provide information about longer term gains in aboveground carbon stocks? Here we study the suitability of PRI time series to understand intra‐annual stem‐growth dynamics at one of the world's largest terrestrial carbon pools—the boreal forest. We hypothesized that PRI time series can be used to determine the onset (hypothesis 1) and cessation (hypothesis 2) of radial growth and enable tracking of intra‐annual tree growth dynamics (hypothesis 3). Tree‐level measurements were collected in 2018 and 2019 to link highly temporally resolved PRI observations unambiguously with information on daily radial tree growth collected via point dendrometers. We show that the seasonal onset of photosynthetic activity as determined by PRI time series was significantly earlier (p < .05) than the onset of radial tree growth determined from the point dendrometer time series which does not support our first hypothesis. In contrast, seasonal decline of photosynthetic activity and cessation of radial tree growth was not significantly different (p > .05) when derived from PRI and dendrometer time series, respectively, supporting our second hypothesis. Mixed‐effects modeling results supported our third hypothesis by showing that the PRI was a statistically significant (p < .0001) predictor of intra‐annual radial tree growth dynamics, and tracked these daily radial tree‐growth dynamics in remarkable detail with conditional and marginal coefficients of determination of 0.48 and 0.96 (for 2018) and 0.43 and 0.98 (for 2019), respectively. Our findings suggest that PRI could provide novel insights into nuances of carbon cycling dynamics by alleviating important uncertainties associated with intra‐annual vegetation response to climate change.  相似文献

We report here for the first time variations in the viability and biochemical activity of dahi and yoghurt cultures, when grown together with therapeutic cultures, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus I and Bifidobacterium bifidum R, in buffalo skim milk. Nearly one log reduction in mesophilic lactic count was observed in dahi supplemented with probiotic cultures after 18 h of incubation at 30 °C. Associative growth increased the titratable acidity (TA) of dahi marginally (from 0.93 to 1.18 % lactic acid) but reduced the TA in yoghurt (from 1.68 to 1.44 % lactic acid). Probiotic culture supplementation reduced volatile acidity (VA) (from 36.0 to 15.8 ml) and diacetyl (from 4.05 to 2.80 ppm) and tyrosine (from 0.46 to 0.36 μg tyrosine/g curd ) content in dahi, whereas it increased VA (from 8.2 to 8.6 ml of 0.01 % NaoH/50 g) and acetaldehyde (from 28.4 to 34.6 ppm) production in yoghurt. Based on these results, the associative growth had no effect on proteolytic activity of probiotic yoghurt.  相似文献
