The spatial and temporal movement patterns of sympatric juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua and Greenland cod Gadus ogac were studied using high‐resolution radio‐acoustic positioning in a coastal area of Newfoundland during the summers of 2009 and 2010. A total of 20 fish (10 G. ogac and 10 G. morhua) were equipped with acoustic transmitters and monitored for periods up to 23 days. Most fishes showed high site fidelity with mean residence times of 12·4 (G. morhua) and 14·4 days (G. ogac). A few individuals showed a transient use of the study area, ranging distances up to c. 4 km. Mean daily home ranges [95% kernel utilization distributions (KUDs)] and core activity areas were significantly larger for G. morhua (3·8 and 0·5 ha) than for G. ogac (2·7 and 0·3 ha). Home ranges were not related to total length (LT) for G. morhua but showed a weak positive relationship for G. ogac. Gadus morhua occupied larger areas during the day while G. ogac occupied slightly larger areas at night. Mean rates of movement for G. ogac and G. morhua ranged from 0·83 to 1·24 and 0·76 to 1·76 LT s?1, respectively, and were highest during crepuscular periods. Overall, G. morhua were wider ranging, moved at faster rates and were active throughout the diel cycle compared to G. ogac of the same size. It is suggested that differential use of space and activity periods plays an important role in the successful coexistence of these two species.  相似文献

Exercise metabolism in two species of cod in arctic waters   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The northern range of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), overlaps the southern range of the Greenland cod (Gadus ogac), in the coastal waters of Western Greenland. The availability of a temperate water species (G. morhua) in the same area and oceanographic conditions as a polar species (G. ogac) presented us with the ideal circumstances to test the hypothesis of metabolic cold adaptation (MCA) since many of the problems associated with MCA studies (adaptation of the animals beyond their normal temperature range or mathematical extrapolation of data to common temperatures) could thus be avoided. We therefore used a swim tunnel to measure oxygen consumption in fish at 4°C over a range of swimming speeds and following exhaustion, monitored the size of the oxygen debt and time of oxygen debt repayment. There were no significant differences in standard (60–72 mg O2 kg–1· hr–1), routine (76 mg O2 kg–1·hr–1), active (137mg O2 kg–1·hr–1), or maximal (157 mg O2 kg–1·hr–1) metabolic rate, metabolic scope (2.5) or critical swimming speed (2.2 BL·s–1) between the two species. Following exhaustive swimming, however, the half-time for oxygen debt repayment in G. ogac (43 min) was almost twice that of G. morhua (25 min). Despite its circumpolar distribution, therefore, there was no evidence of MCA in G. ogac.  相似文献

Comparative analysis of variability of seven microsatellite loci—Gmo3, Gmo-G12, Gmo-G18, Gmo19, Gmo34, Gmo35 and Pgmo32—was performed for the Greenland cod Gadus ogac, Pacific cod G. macrocephalus, Atlantic cod G. morhua, and White Sea cod G. morhua marisalbi. High genetic identity was observed between the Greenland cod and Pacific cod (I = 0.9520). Pair analysis of genetic differentiation was performed on the studied microsatellite loci according to θ (analogue of F ST). The Greenland cod differed significantly from the Pacific, Atlantic, and the White Sea cod; however, the differentiation level varied. The lowest value was observed for the pair Greenland cod-Pacific cod (0.123), and the highest levels were registered for the pairs Greenland cod-Atlantic cod (0.605) and Greenland cod-White Sea cod (0.535).  相似文献

Escape performance was examined in three similarly sized teleosts caught in Arctic waters: the Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, the Greenland cod, Gadus ogac, and the short-horned sculpin, Myoxocephalus scorpius. Escape responses were elicited by a mechanical stimulus and followed by recordings of velocity and acceleration over the first 320 ms. A significant difference in escape performance was confirmed between the three species. G. morhua always exhibited the fastest and M. scorpius the slowest responses. Maximal measures of acceleration and velocity revealed no difference between G. morhua (12.6 m s–2 and 1.27 m s–1) and G. ogac (11.9 m s–2 and 1.16 m s–1) but an overall reduced performance in M. scorpius (6.5 m s–2 and 0.71 m s–1). The escape performance of the gadid and cottid species generally correlate well with their behavioural lifestyle, but it is surprisingly similar to Antarctic notothenioid fishes at lower temperatures.  相似文献

The feeding habits of co-occurring gadid species Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and Greenland cod (Gadus ogac) in coastal Newfoundland waters, examined using stable isotope (δ 13C and δ 15N) and stomach content analysis, indicated little dietary niche overlap and interspecific competition for food resources despite similar trophic levels. Both species consumed a variety of invertebrates and fish but showed a preference for different prey items. Polychaetes, fish and small crustaceans dominated G. ogac stomach contents while small crustaceans, in particular hyperiid amphipods and fish, dominated those of G. morhua. In general, G. morhua consumed more pelagic prey and had a significantly more pelagic (more negative) δ 13C signature while G. ogac consumed primarily benthic prey and had a more benthic (more positive) δ 13C signature. δ 15N levels were similar in these species suggesting similar trophic positions, with levels increasing with fish length in both species. Dietary overlap was not significant in both stomach and stable isotope analyses. We conclude that interspecific competition for food is low between G. ogac and G. morhua and is unlikely to be a factor in the slow rebuilding of Atlantic cod in this region.  相似文献

A noncoding intergenic spacer has previously been reported in mtDNA of Gadiformes. Here we present sequence information from two other cod species and variation within three species to clarify the evolution of this region. A general feature of the T–P spacer is high variation and folding into two or three hairpins. The variation among species both in structure of the region and sequence variation reflects the phylogenetic relationship of the species. A unique pattern is found within Arctic cod, Arctogadus glacialis, in which tandem repeat motifs result in new stable secondary structures. There is large variation in size of the region both within (heteroplasmy) and among individuals. A duplicated insertion is found in Greenland cod, Gadus ogac, at the same position as a corresponding duplication in Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua.  相似文献

Climatic changes during the quaternary history in Arctic regions have shaped the genetic variation and genealogies of Arctic species. Several studies have been conducted in recent years on genetic diversity of Arctic organisms, but marine fishes are largely underrepresented in these studies. Here, we present a study on mitochondrial variation in three Arctic gadoids: Arctic cod (Arctogadus glacialis), Greenland cod (Gadus ogac), and Polar cod (Boreogadus saida). In addition, geographic variation in Polar cod is presented. The sequence variation at the mtDNA presents similar patterns as observed for other related marine fishes. Variation in these three species reflects rather different historic processes, due to colonization and climatic changes than differences in life histories. In Polar cod, a deeper genealogy is observed and variation is dependent on both latitude and longitude. The deep genealogy indicates either admixture of separate lineages or a population, which has been stable in size during alternating cold and warm periods of the pleistocene. Synopsis The distribution and relative abundance, life history parameters, food habits, and metabolic rate were determined forGadus ogac in Sagvagjuac Inlet, northwest coast of Hudson Bay (63° N). Fish were demersal, non-schooling, and distributed evenly down to 35 m depth. Growth was slow (maximum age 12 y) and mortality relatively low (0.5 y–1).G. ogac first spawned at 2–3 y and spawned annually thereafter, in late March – early April. They tended to remain in the inlet and were not taken on the open coast. They are top carnivores, taking primarily capelin when available, benthic crustacea (crabs, amphipods) when not. The metabolic rate ofG. ogac is intermediate between the elevated rate of Arctic cod,Boreogadus saida, and eurythermal temperate species. Available data indicate they are not important in marine mammal and bird food webs. Their biology is contrasted with that of Arctic cod, which are short-lived, cryopelagic, feed on pelagic crustacea, and are an extremely important component of Arctic marine food webs.Direct reprint requests  相似文献

Standard metabolic rate of Greenland cod or uvak, Gadus ogac, polar cod, Boreogadus saida, Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, and sculpin, Myxocephalus scorpius, caught in the same geographical area on the west coast of Greenland was measured at 4.5°C, the temperature at which the fish were caught. The present data does not support the Metabolic Cold Adaptation theory in the traditional sense of the standard metabolic rate being 2–4 times higher for Arctic fishes than for temperate species. The standard metabolic rate of the two exclusively Arctic species of teleosts was only 10% and 26% higher, respectively, than the two species that occur in temperate as well as Arctic areas. The critical oxygen tension, with respect to oxygen consumption, of resting uvak was between 50 and 60 mmHg, and the lethal oxygen tension 20–25 mmHg at 4.5°C, which is considerably higher than for Atlantic cod from a temperate area measured at the same temperature.  相似文献

Four isozymes of cytochrome P-450 were purified to varying degrees of homogeneity from liver microsomes of cod, a marine teleost fish. The cod were treated with β-naphthoflavone by intraperitoneal injection, and liver microsomes were prepared by calcium aggregation. After solubilization of cytochromes P-450 with the zwitterionic detergent 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propansulfonate, chromatography on Phenyl-Sepharose CL-4B, and subsequently on DEAE-Sepharose, resulted in two cytochrome P-450 fractions. These were further resolved on hydroxyapatite into a total of four fractions containing different isozymes of cytochromes P-450. One fraction, designated cod cytochrome P-450c, was electrophoretically homogeneous, was recovered in the highest yield and constituted the major form of the isozymes. The relative molecular mass of this form (58 000) corresponds well with a protein band appearing in cod liver microsomes after treatment with β-naphthoflavone. Both cytochrome P-450c and a minor form called cytochrome P-450d (56 000) showed activity towards 7-ethoxyresorufin in a reconstituted system containing rat liver NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase and phospholipid. Differences between these two forms were observed in the rate and optimal pH for conversion of this substrate, and in optical properties. Rabbit antiserum to cod cytochrome P-450c did not show any cross-reactions with cod cytochrome P-450a (Mr 55 000) or cytochrome P-450d in Ouchterlony immunodiffusion, but gave a precipitin line of partial identify with cod cytochrome P-450b (Mr 54 000), possibly as a result of contaminating cytochrome P-450c in this fraction.  相似文献

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) were identified in pre-rigor muscle of two species of cold water fish, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) by biochemical and immunological methods. The distribution was described by immunohistology. Special emphasis was directed to the extracellular matrix (ECM) HSPGs perlecan and agrin. In vivo 35S-sulfate labeling combined with ultracentrifugation in CsCl2, DEAE chromatography and scintillation counting of the eluates, revealed that the content of 35S-labeled PGs was much higher in wolffish than in cod. A considerable proportion of the 35S-sulfated PGs in both species was HSPG, as judged by nitrous acid degradation. HSPG represented, however, a higher proportion of the 35S-sulfated PGs in cod compared to wolffish. Dot blot and electrophoresis/western blot using two different HS-mAbs, 10E4 and HepSS-1 indicated structural differences in the HS-chains of the PGs present. This observation was strengthened by immunohistochemistry, showing that both mAbs detected epitopes in the pericellular area, but the staining patterns were not superimposable. Two different agrin isoforms were identified in both species. Furthermore, in the white muscle of both cod and wolffish, perlecan mAb (A7L6) showed positive staining restricted to the transition between myocommata and myofibers.  相似文献

The respiratory responses and tolerance of hypoxia were studied in two marine teleosts, the red grouper (Epinephelus akaara, a sluggish species) and the black sea bream (Mylio macrocephalus, an active species). Neither species showed abnormal behaviour or mortality when exposed to 2 mg O2 l–1 for 7 h. The black sea bream was, however, comparatively more tolerant when exposed to 1 mg O2 l–1, but tolerance of both species became similar under extremely hypoxic conditions (i.e. 0.5 mg O2 l–1). In contrast to most other teleosts, both species showed a reduction in opercular beating rate during hypoxia, and oxygen conformity was found in the range of 0.5 to 7.0 mg O2l –1. O2 dissociation curves were constructed, and the P50 value of the black sea breams (27 ± 5.6 mm Hg) was found to be much lower than that of the red groupers (50 ± 2.5 mm Hg). For both species, the general levels of venous PO2 showed a direct relationship to ambient PO2, and were markedly reduced after 1 h exposure to various levels of hypoxia. Compared with the red groupers, the black sea breams appeared to be more able to maintain its venous PO2 levels during prolonged hypoxic exposure.  相似文献

The characteristics of phosphate uptake in synchronized populations of Euglena gracilis Klebs (Z) were studied. The cells were grown autotrophically in batch culture and synchronized with a cycle of 14:10 LD. Incorporation of P was nonlinear with time for the first 2 h of incubation over a wide range of P concentrations and completely inhibited by darkness. The kinetics of P uptake as a function of P concentration were triphasic between 0 and 100 μM PO4, obeying Michaelis-Menten kinetics over the 0–3 μM PO4 range-only. Uptake velocity increased linearly with, concentration above 3 μM PO4. The kinetics of P uptake varied with stage in the cell cycle. The half-saturation constant for uptake at the lower concentrations oscillated between 0.7 and 2.8 μM PO4, reaching a peak immediately before the onset of cell division (beginning of the dark period). Vmax was largest in the middle of the light period, as was the slope of the linear portion of the kinetic pattern. Further analysis of the kinetics suggests that changes in this slope are responsible for the oscillation in Ks values calculated for the lower concentrations. This analysis assumes 2 uptake mechanisms, one which saturates at low concentrations of phosphate, and one which is nonsaturable over the entire concentration range examined.  相似文献

Summary Isolated cod brain microtubules from the cold-adapted Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) have previously been shown to be highly detyrosinated, a post-translational modification of tubulin usually found in stable subsets of microtubules. In this study we found this was not restricted only to isolated brain microtubules. Microtubules in primary cultures of brain and skin cells were composed of both tyrosinated (Tyr)- and detyrosinated (Glu)-tubulin seen by immunocytochemistry. Immunoelectron microscopy of isolated microtubules showed that individual microtubules were composed of a mixture of Tyr- and Glu-tubulin. Leukocytes with extending lamellopodia contained only microtubules stained with the antibody against Tyr-tubulin, and isolated heart tubulin lacked both Tyr- and Glu-tubulin, suggesting that a relative high level of detyrosination is a characteristic of most, but not all, cod microtubules. Brain cell microtubules were more resistant to mitotic inhibitors than skin cell microtubules, but this was not correlated to a difference in detyrosination. Brain and skin cell microtubules were only partially disassembled when incubated at 0°C. Upon reassembly of microtubules at 12°C, microtubules were still made of mixtures of Tyr- and Glu-tubulin, indicating that detyrosination of assembled microtubules is rapid and/or that in cod cells, in contrast to mammalian cells, Glu-tubulin can reassemble to microtubules. Our data show that most cod microtubules are highly detyrosinated, but this is not the cause of their cold adaptation or drug stability.  相似文献

Most studies on behavioural contributions to dispersal and recruitment during early life history stages of fishes have focused on coral reef species. For cold ocean environments, high variation in seasonal temperature and development times suggest that parallel studies on active behaviour are needed for cold-water species. Thus, we examined the critical swimming speed (Ucrit) of marine fish larvae from 2 contrasting species: Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod) and Myoxocephalus scorpius (shorthorn sculpin), a pelagic and bottom spawner respectively. Within-species comparisons showed that sculpin reared at 6 °C had lower initial Ucrit values, but a faster Ucrit increase through development compared with 3 °C conspecifics, ultimately resulting in faster critical swimming speeds at metamorphosis (10.5 vs. 9.1 cm·s− 1). In contrast, although cod larvae reared at 10 °C were faster swimmers at first feeding than 6 °C fish, temperature differences were absent after the first week. These results show that temperature influences the trajectory of larval critical swimming speed development, but that the relationship is species-specific. Although 6 °C sculpin and cod of similar length had equivalent Ucrit values, the smaller size of cod at hatch (5.3 vs. 10.8 mm for sculpin) resulted in much lower age-specific Ucrit values for cod. These data have significant implications for how swimming activity of the two species might affect dispersal, particularly in the first few weeks post-hatch. Overall, our data suggest that temperature during larval development influences the swimming capacity of cold-water marine fishes, and has important ramifications for biophysical models of dispersal.  相似文献

An expedition to the middle Rio Purus basin uncovered a remarkable new species of the genus Spinipterus. The new species has a very distinct and conspicuous colour pattern resembling a jaguar and it is almost four times larger than Spinipterus acsi, a small specimen (32 mm LS) from Caño Santa Rita, a right bank tributary of Río Nanay in Peru and a second specimen was reported from Rio Juruá, Amazonas State, Brazil. Although the new species is more similar in size and colour pattern to Liosomadoras, it shares the synapomorphies for Spinipterus. The new species differs from the congener by the following characters: (a) colour pattern with large black rosette-like spots over a light yellow to brown background (v. brown background with small dark blotches over the body); (b) adult body size reaching 104.5 mm LS (v. maximum known size 37.1 mm LS); (c) posterior process of cleithrum short, never reaching vertical through the dorsal-fin origin (v. posterior process long, surpassing vertical through the dorsal-fin origin); (d) seven soft pectoral-fin rays (v. six); (e) caudal fin truncated (v. caudal fin rounded).  相似文献

A comparison of the thermoregulation of water foraging wasps (Vespula vulgaris, Polistes dominulus) under special consideration of ambient temperature and solar radiation was conducted. The body surface temperature of living and dead wasps was measured by infrared thermography under natural conditions in their environment without disturbing the insects’ behaviour. The body temperature of both of them was positively correlated with Ta and solar radiation. At moderate Ta (22–28 °C) the regression lines revealed mean thorax temperatures (Tth) of 35.5–37.5 °C in Vespula, and of 28.6–33.7 °C in Polistes. At high Ta (30–39 °C) Tth was 37.2–40.6 °C in Vespula and 37.0–40.8 °C in Polistes. The thorax temperature excess (TthTa) increased at moderate Ta by 1.9 °C (Vespula) and 4.4 °C (Polistes) per kW−1 m−2. At high Ta it increased by 4.0 °C per kW−1 m−2 in both wasps. A comparison of the living water foraging Vespula and Polistes with dead wasps revealed a great difference in their thermoregulatory behaviour. At moderate Ta (22–28 °C) Vespula exhibited distinct endothermy in contrast to Polistes, which showed only a weak endothermic activity. At high Ta (30–39 °C) Vespula reduced their active heat production, and Polistes were always ectothermic. Both species exhibited an increasing cooling effort with increasing insolation and ambient temperature.  相似文献

Pot trials were conducted to study the influence of copper (Cu) on the growth and biomass of Elephant grass (EG, Pennisetum purpureum Schumach), Vetiver grass (VG, Vetiveria zizanioides) and the upland reed (UR, Phragmites australis). Cu toxicity in EG, VG and UR was positively correlated with the total and bioavailable Cu concentrations in the soil. Based on the EC50, dry weights, Cu contents, chlorophyll contents and photosynthesis rates, the Cu tolerance of the three species followed the trend EG > VG > UR. There were no significant differences in the unit calorific values among the different plants, though the total calorific values of EG were higher than those of VG and UR due to its higher biomass. The addition of KH2PO4 to the soil decreased the bioavailability of Cu and the Cu uptake by plants. EG could therefore be a good candidate for growth on Cu-contaminated soils, especially those improved by phosphate.  相似文献

Homalodisca coagulata (Say) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) eggs 1–10 days of age were exposed to Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, Gonatocerus triguttatus Girault, and Gonatocerus fasciatus Girault (all Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) in no choice laboratory trials to investigate egg age utilization and to determine which egg ages are vulnerable to attack by these three parasitoids. The H. coagulata egg ages that were most suitable for oviposition by G. ashmeadi, G. triguttatus, and G. fasciatus were eggs 3, 4, and 2 days of age, respectively. Egg ages least suitable for parasitoid development were 6–10 days for G. ashmeadi (resulting in <50% parasitism), 1–2 and 7–10 days for G. triguttatus (resulting in <25% parasitism), and 3–10 days for G. fasciatus (resulting in <11% parasitism). Pooling parasitism data across all egg ages showed that parasitism by G. ashmeadi was 12.9 and 28.5% higher compared with G. triguttatus and G. fasciatus, respectively, and G. triguttatus resulted in 15.6% higher percentage parasitism compared with G. fasciatus. Egg age had a significant effect on the percentage of female G. ashmeadi offspring produced, but this was not significant for G. triguttatus, and low G. fasciatus parasitism prevented statistical analyses for comparisons. Results from tests where females were offered a choice for oviposition between eggs 1, 3, and 5 days of age demonstrated that G. ashmeadi and G. triguttatus showed no significant oviposition preference, while percentage parasitism by G. fasciatus was 29.4 and 7.4% higher when females were presented eggs 1 and 3 days of age, respectively, compared with eggs 5 days of age. Choice tests indicated that an overlap in egg age suitability for oviposition exists between G. ashmeadi, G. triguttatus, and G. fasciatus, and that interspecific competition for eggs 1, 2, and 3 days of age may occur in the field environment.  相似文献
