Steroids both in seminal fluid (SF) and blood serum (BS) as well as the milt quality (sperm motility and sperm production) were investigated during final maturation of Persian sturgeon. The BS levels of testosterone (T), 11-Ketotestosterone (11-KT), progesterone (P), 17α,20β,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20βS), cortisol (C) and 17α,hydroxyprogesterone (OHP) elevated after pituitary preparation (PP) treatment and then decreased during stripping period for spermiating males. Such elevations did not occur for non-spermiating individuals and steroids remained in basal levels after PP treatment until the end of stripping period. For both groups (spermiating and non-spermiating fish), the BS levels of 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) did not show significant changes during experiment. During stripping period, the values of all tested steroids were significantly lower in SF than in BS of spermiating males. SF levels of 20βS and 11-KT showed a decreasing trend and the other steroids were unchanged during this period. Significant positive correlations were found between the values of 20βs and 11-KT in BS with their levels in SF. Also, BS and SF levels of 20βs and 11-KT were positively correlated with sperm motility characteristics (percentage and duration of motility) and sperm production (sperm density and milt volume), respectively. The results showed the probable involvement of 20βs, P, OHP, T, 11-KT and C in final maturation of Persian sturgeon, especially 20βs and 11-KT had good correlations with qualitative parameters of milt. The lower levels of steroids in SF than those in BS might also be essential for viability of Persian sturgeon spermatozoa. Probably, there are mechanisms that stabilize the concentrations of a number of hormones in the SF.  相似文献

Synopsis Changes in serum steroid hormones were studied during the reproductive cycle of a viviparous rockfish,Sebastiscus marmoratus. Serum levels of estradiol-17β (E2) and testosterone (T) were moderately high throughout the spawning period from December until February (E2), and until post-spawning in April (T). Serum progesterone (prog) fluctuated but remained low throughout the annual reproductive cycle; 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α, 20β-diOHprog), on the other hand, was relatively high during the spawning period. During the spawning period, 7 of 12 females reared under laboratory conditions spawned twice at 10-to 16-day intervals. Histological observations indicated that oocytes developed gradually during gestation of the preceding brood and; after parturition, developed more quickly towards the end of vitellogenesis and subsequent fertilization. In repeat spawners, E2 and female-specific serum proteins remained high several days after the first parturition, then gradually decreased. Prog showed no significant changes over the period. The 17α, 20β-diOHprog, however, was low immediately after parturition, then rapidly increased, remained elevated during the middle of the period and then decreased. These results indicate that E2 is involved in vitellogenesis, and 17α, 20β-diOHprog may have some important roles in gestation in the multiple spawnerS. marmoratus.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the lunar cycle effects of the spawning of Audefduf vaigiensis through in vivo and in vitro analysis. For this purpose, the indices of GSI, serum levels of sex steroids, including testosterone (T), 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (OHP), 17α, 20β-dihydroxyprogesterone (DHP), and 11-keto-testosterone (11-KT) as well as the germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) were measured. The sampling pattern was weekly, based on the moon cycles as the new moon (NM), the first quarter (FQ), the full moon (FM), and the last quarter (LQ). In females, the highest in vivo values of the GSI index were obtained in FQ and LQ, and in males, this value was significantly higher in LQ than NM. The highest in vivo level of OHP in females was observed in FQ, whereas in males was obtained in FM. In both sexes, the in vivo serum levels of DHP were obtained in LQ. In males, the level of 11-KT were at the peak in NM. In vitro analysis showed the highest rate of GVBD in LQ. Moreover, the in vitro levels of T, OHP, and DHP were significantly higher in LQ compare to NM in both sexes. However, in males, the in vitro levels of 11-KT was significantly higher in NM than LQ. These cyclical changes obtained from in vivo plasma steroid hormones and in vitro data on GVBD suggested that lunar periodicity is a major external regulator that synchronized ovarian and testicular activity of A. vaigiensis with emphasis on spawning phenomenon.

Preliminary observations were conducted to identify conspicuous body postures and movements of males and hermaphrodites in the mangrove killifish Kryptolebias marmoratus . These behaviours were used quantitatively to examine the social interactions for experimental pairings of K. marmoratus of different sexual states ( i.e. simultaneous hermaphrodite and male) in an aquarium with an open-water area and simulated crab burrows. This allowed observation of behaviours that could not be observed in the field. Kryptolebias marmoratus , regardless of sexual state and experimental treatment, spent 40% of the time in the burrow. Hermaphrodites exhibited a preference for associating with males rather than other hermaphrodites. The observed complexity of displayed behaviours and interactions between paired conspecifics indicate that K. marmoratus has a rich repertoire of social behaviour not predicted for a strictly selfing species. Also, land crab burrows play an important role in their social interactions.  相似文献

Immature 1-year-old Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were implanted with Silastic capsules of different sizes filled with testosterone (T). Testosterone had both positive and negative effects on testicular weights, spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. The positive effects: higher incidence of males with enlarged gonads, spermiation, and high plasma levels of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P), were most pronounced in males treated with small T capsules. The negative effects: suppression of gonadal development and depressed plasma levels of 11-KT and 17,20β-P compared with mature controls, were most evident in fish treated with large T capsules.  相似文献

The mangrove rivulus, Kryptolebias marmoratus (Rivulidae, Cyprinodontiformes), is phylogenetically embedded within a large clade of oviparous (egg laying) and otherwise mostly gonochoristic (separate sex) killifish species in the circumtropical suborder Aplocheiloidei. It is unique in its reproductive mode: K. marmoratus is essentially the world's only vertebrate species known to engage routinely in self‐fertilization as part of a mixed‐mating strategy of selfing plus occasional outcrossing with gonochoristic males. This unique form of procreation has profound population‐genetic and evolutionary‐genetic consequences that are the subject of this review.  相似文献

Tapiscia sinensis, a rare endemic woody plant with both male and hermaphrodite individuals, is distributed in southern China. Whether T. sinensis is functionally androdioecious is unknown. In this study, we compare the male fitness between male and hermaphrodite individuals and perform pollination experiments in different habitats, identify the ability of actual siring of pollen from hermaphrodites and males under natural pollination, and discuss the evolution and maintenance of androdioecy in T. sinensis. Research suggests that flowers and fruits grow synchronously on hermaphrodite plants of T. sinensis from April to June. The males of T. sinensis had more than twice the genetic contribution of hermaphrodites through their male function and the fruit set from male pollination and cross‐pollination was the highest in all of the treatments, whereas that from self‐pollination was the lowest. Additionally, paternity analysis showed that the hermaphroditic pollen could result in siring success under natural pollination. The results showed that T. sinensis is a functionally androdioecious tree, that male individuals might evolve from a hermaphroditic ancestor and that the synchronous growth of flowers and fruit in hermaphrodites might facilitate the evolution and maintenance of androdioecy in T. sinensis.  相似文献

Kryptolebias marmoratus exposed to 4 ng l−1 of ethinyl oestradiol (EE2) for 30 days experienced significant changes in endogenous 17β‐oestradiol (E2) and 11‐ketotestosterone (KT) and qualitative changes in gonad morphology. Both hermaphrodites and males showed a significant decrease in E2, whereas only males exhibited a significant decrease in KT. Exposure to EE2 resulted in a decrease in spermatid and spermatocyte density in males and an increase in the number of early stage oocytes in hermaphrodites.  相似文献

We exposed, in two successive spawning seasons, individually placed precocious male Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) and brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) parr to odour stimuli (ovarian fluid and urine mix) from ovulated conspecific or heterospecific anadromous females. Atlantic salmon parr had significantly higher plasma concentrations of the hormones 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and testosterone (T) after exposure to odours from conspecific females or from brown trout females compared to parr exposed to a control solution (0.9% NaCl). We did not observe any significant differences between the hormone levels in salmon parr exposed to the two female odours. The salmon parr exposed to conspecific odours had significantly higher volumes of strippable milt compared to the controls, but we did not find any significant differences when comparing the effect of the two female odours. Brown trout parr had significantly higher plasma 17,20β-P levels following exposure to heterospecific female odours compared to control males, but there was no significant difference between males exposed to the different female odours. We did not observe any significant differences in plasma levels of T and 11-KT and in milt volumes between exposed and control trout. Taken together, the results from both tested species indicate that the potency of heterospecific stimuli in stimulating increased plasma sex steroid hormone levels in male parr was as strong as stimuli from conspecific females. The results are discussed in connection to observed hybridisation between the two sympatric species.  相似文献

Individuals are regularly documented to consistently differ in their behavioural types (BTs). For example, some individuals are bold whereas others are shy. Within the human personality literature, the big five personality dimensions are commonly documented to be sex-specific with testosterone suggested to underpin traits such as aggressiveness. In non-human animals recent research suggests sex-specific BT expression may be influenced by ecology, mating system and sexual selection. While most research on sex-specific personality has focused on dioecious species, we explore sex differences in BT expression in a sequential hermaphrodite the mangrove killifish. We replicate within 7 isogenic genotypes and investigate sex differences (hermaphrodite and secondary male) in three BTs (exploration, boldness and aggression). This approach allows us to investigate sex differences in BT expression whilst controlling for genetic variation. In this study we find that both secondary males and hermaphrodites are repeatable at the individual level yet there was no difference between the sexes in average BT scores. Furthermore, aggression scores differed between genotypes, and were repeatable at the genotype level, suggesting strong genetic control. Finally, male boldness was significantly more repeatable than hermaphrodites potentially supporting recent proposals relating to sexual selection. We document a behavioural syndrome in male fish with bolder individuals being more aggressive, this behavioural syndrome was not observed however in hermaphrodites. In contrast to a previous developmental study in this species exploration did not correlate with either aggression or boldness in either males or hermaphrodites.  相似文献

The wild perciform teleost Neogobius melanostomus (the round goby) originated from the Ponto-Caspian region and is now a highly successful invasive species in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Males may attract females into their nests for spawning by releasing reproductive pheromones, and it has been previously shown that reproductive males synthesize and release the 5β-reduced and 3α-hydroxyl steroids 3α-hydroxy-5β-androstane-11,17-dione (11-oxo-etiocholanolone; 11-O-ETIO) and 3α-hydroxy-5β-androstane-11,17-dione 3-sulfate (11-oxo-etiocholanolone-3-sulfate; 11-O-ETIO-3-s) and 3α,17β-dihydroxy-5β-androstan-11-one 17-sulfate. In this study, we investigated properties of these released steroids by recording field potential responses from the olfactory epithelium (electro-olfactogram, EOG). The steroid 3α,17β-dihydroxy-5β-androstan-11-one 17-sulfate did not elicit olfactory responses while both 11-O-ETIO and 11-O-ETIO-3-s stimulated olfactory field potentials in the round goby, but not in the goldfish. Cross-adaptation analysis demonstrated that round gobies discriminated between11-O-ETIO and 11-O-ETIO-3-s (as well as etiocholanolone, ETIO) at the sensory level. Second messenger cascades depending on both cAMP and IP3 were inferred for steroids from pharmacological inhibition studies, while the canonical teleost odors taurocholic acid (a bile acid) and l-alanine (an amino acid) used only cAMP and IP3, respectively. The round goby presents itself as an excellent species for the study of olfactory function of fish in the wild, given its possible use of these released steroids as pheromones.  相似文献

Three cDNAs encoding pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis follicle stimulating hormone-β (FSH-β), luteinizing hormone-β (LH-β) and glycoprotein-α (GPH-α) subunits were cloned and characterized. Gene expression of these subunits was analysed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and compared with the brain gene expression of endogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRHs): Pacific salmon GnRH (GnRH-III), pejerrey GnRH (GnRH-I) and chicken GnRH-II (GnRH-II) and plasma sex steroid levels in adult males. The nucleotide sequences of the FSH-β, LH-β and GPH-α subunits are 466, 558 and 677 base pairs long, encoding for mature peptides of 102, 118 and 98 amino acids respectively. Maturing males had high expression of FSH-β and GPH-α subunits, and intermediate levels of LH-β when compared with running ripe and spent stages. These animals had the lowest plasma testosterone (T) and 11-ketosterone (11-KT) values as well as low expression of sGnRH, cGnRH-II and pjGnRH. Running ripe males had the lowest expression of FSH-β and the highest expression of LH-β and GPH-α subunits, and of the three GnRH genes. At this stage, the highest values of T and 11-KT were observed. Spent males showed low expression of the three gonadotropin (GtH) subunits, sGnRH, pjGnRH and low levels of T. At this stage, 11-KT levels and cGnRH-II expression showed a tendency to decrease but the values were not statistically significant ( P < 0·05) to running ripe stage. The present results would suggest that T and 11-KT modulate the expression of the FSH subunits. The expression of the anterior brain GnRH variants, sGnRH and pjGnRH is correlated with LH-β expression and reinforce the importance of the forebrain GnRH variants on the regulation of pituitary function.  相似文献

How androdioecy (coexistence of hermaphrodites and males) is maintained is still poorly understood. Therefore, sex determination was studied in the androdioecious barnacle Scalpellum scalpellum L. First, 247 cypris larvae from seven broods were investigated for sexual dimorphism in larval morphology and found to be all identical. Second, experiments with cyprids showed that males and hermaphrodites differ distinctly in morphology as soon as 4–5 days after settlement. Third, 14 252 cyprids were allowed to settle on the bottom of their culture cages, and all surviving larvae developed into hermaphrodites and none into dwarf males. Fourth, larvae settled in hermaphrodite receptacles (i.e. future males) were removed at increasing intervals after settlement to study if the male and hermaphrodite sexual expressions are fixed or plastic. All larvae became dwarf males if allowed to stay there for more than 8 h after settlement. But if removed within 3 h after settlement, half of them developed into hermaphrodites. We conclude that an environmental sex determination mechanism operates in S. scalpellum. Together with a 1:1 hermaphrodite/male ratio observed in previously reported experiments offering a free choice of settlement, we suggest that all larvae are potential hermaphrodites, but only 50% can settle in hermaphrodite receptacles and yield males.  相似文献

The hormones 17β-estradiol, 17α-hydroxy-20β-dihydroprogesterone(17α, 20β-P), 11-ketotestosterone, testosterone, gonadotropin and also vitellogenin, were determined during the spawning migration of wild pink salmon in the Fraser and Thompson Rivers in British Columbia. This stock of pink salmon takes approximately 2 weeks to migrate the 333 km upstream to the spawning grounds. Both sexes were at an advanced stage of sexual development when they entered fresh water. In females both the 17β-estradiol and vitellogenin levels fell precipitously during the migration, to be very low at spawning, whereas the 17α,20β-P level rose rapidly, to be highest at arrival on the spawning grounds. The gonadotropin level also rose rapidly during the migration, and was highest in spent fish. Testosterone was at a high level throughout, although this level decreased steadily during migration. In many respects similar endocrine changes were observed in the male. For example, in the case of androgen levels, both testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone fell steadily during migration but were still relatively high at spawning, whereas both gonadotropin and 17α, 20β-P levels rose markedly as migration progress. However, although the qualitative changes were often similar between the sexes, the levels of 17α, 20β-P, testosterone, and gonadotropin were considerably higher throughout in females than in males. It is concluded that this stock of pink salmon is at an advanced stage of sexual development when it enters fresh water. The endocrine changes observed during this study represent those controlling the final stages of reproduction, specifically final oocyte maturation and ovulation in females, and the final stages of spermatogenesis and spermiation in males.  相似文献

Despite the mouse being an important laboratory species, little is known about changes in its extracellular matrix (ECM) during follicle and corpora lutea formation and regression. Follicle development was induced in mice (29 days of age/experimental day 0) by injections of pregnant mare’s serum gonadotrophin on days 0 and 1 and ovulation was induced by injection of human chorionic gonadotrophin on day 2. Ovaries were collected for immunohistochemistry (n=10 per group) on days 0, 2 and 5. Another group was mated and ovaries were examined on day 11 (n=7). Collagen type IV α1 and α2, laminin α1, β1 and γ1 chains, nidogens 1 and 2 and perlecan were present in the follicular basal lamina of all developmental stages. Collagen type XVIII was only found in basal lamina of primordial, primary and some preantral follicles, whereas laminin α2 was only detected in some preantral and antral follicles. The focimatrix, a specialised matrix of the membrana granulosa, contained collagen type IV α1 and α2, laminin α1, β1 and γ1 chains, nidogens 1 and 2, perlecan and collagen type XVIII. In the corpora lutea, staining was restricted to capillary sub-endothelial basal laminas containing collagen type IV α1 and α2, laminin α1, β1 and γ1 chains, nidogens 1 and 2, perlecan and collagen type XVIII. Laminins α4 and α5 were not immunolocalised to any structure in the mouse ovary. The ECM composition of the mouse ovary has similarities to, but also major differences from, other species with respect to nidogens 1 and 2 and perlecan.  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to determine which sensory cues the mangrove rivulus Kryptolebias marmoratus, a quasi-amphibious, hermaphroditic fish, uses to orient in an unfamiliar terrestrial environment. In a laboratory setting, K. marmoratus were placed on a terrestrial test arena and were provided the opportunity to move toward reflective surfaces, water, dark colours v. light colours, and orange colouration. Compared with hermaphrodites, males moved more often toward an orange section of the test arena, suggesting that the response may be associated with camouflage or male–male competition, since only males display orange colouration. Younger individuals also moved more often toward the orange quadrant than older individuals, suggesting age-dependent orientation performance or behaviour. Sloped terrain also had a significant effect on orientation, with more movement downhill, suggesting the importance of the otolith-vestibular system in terrestrial orientation of K. marmoratus. By understanding the orientation of extant amphibious fishes, we may be able to infer how sensory biology and behaviour might have evolved to facilitate invasion of land by amphibious vertebrates millions of years ago.  相似文献

Five isolates belonging to three species of the genusHumicola were tested in this study for their ability to transform progesterone. An oxidative splitting of the side chain of progesterone with the formation of androst-4-ene-3,17-dione, testosterone and testololactone was achieved by all isolates tested ofH. fuscoatra andH. grisea. H. hyalothermophila transformed progesterone to 11α-, 11β-, 17α- and 21-hydroxyprogesterone and a dihydroxyl product (11α, 17α-dihydroxyprogesterone) with the addition of two trihydroxyl products,viz. cortisol and epicortisol. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the different products obtained when a selective isolate of each species acted on progesterone were conducted. The chromatographic resolution of the mixture products obtained when the selective isolate of each ofH. fuscoatra andH. grisea had acted individually on 1 g progesterone revealed the presence of 25 and 20% unchanged progesterone, 20 and 22% androst-4-ene-3,17-dione, 25 and 23% testosterone and 30 and 35% testololactone, respectively. Seventy-four % of progesterone were bioconverted byH. hyalothermophila into 21-hydroxyprogesterone (6%), 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (5%), 11α-hydroxyprogesterone (11%), 11β-hydroxyprogesterone (12%), 11α,17α-dihydroxyprogesterone (5%), cortisol (21%) and epicortisol (13%). This is the first record of conversion of progesterone to both cortisol and epicortisol byH. hyalothermophila.  相似文献

Anatomical and histological examination of Serranus scriba L. showed the existence of primary females (67%), hermaphrodites (31%) and primary males (2%). Synchronous functional hermaphroditism is described on the basis of an anatomical and histological study of the gonads. Although they function simultaneously, the testicular and ovarian parts of hermaphrodite gonads have completely separate ducts. Females and hermaphrodites have the same annual reproduction cycle. In hermaphrodites, the testicular part matures one month sooner than the ovarian part. Cross fertilization between primary females and hermaphrodite individuals and between two different hermaphrodites probably occurs, while self-fertilization is less likely. The testicular tissues of primary males are of the acinar type and those of hermaphrodites are of the radial type. It is possible that primary males do not take part in reproduction. Serranus scriba in Egyptian Mediterranean waters is a longperiod spawner, which spawns from June to the end of October, i.e. it is a summer-autumn spawner.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to document the existence of intersexual or intrasexual selection in the clam shrimp,Eulimnadia texana. Individuals within this species are either males or hermaphrodites. Hermaphrodites can self their own eggs or outcross with a male, but they cannot outcross with other hermaphrodites. Theoretical considerations suggest that both intrasexual and intersexual selection could be occurring on the part of the hermaphrodites and the males. When males were given a choice between two non-gravid hermaphrodites of different sizes, they did not exhibit a mating preference based upon size. When two males of different sizes were isolated with a single nongravid receptive hermaphrodite, the hermaphrodite showed no preference between the two males. There was evidence, however, of male-male competition for receptive hermaphrodites and of mate guarding on the part of the males. During aggressive encounters between twp males, the larger of the two had a significant advantage over the smaller, and larger males were always the victors hermaphrodite takeovers occurred as a result of male-male conflict. Hermaphrodites appear to control the mating process both by struglling with males when they are not receptive to them and by selfing in the presence of males. This suggests that hermaphrodites withhold receptivity cues from males, or produce non-receptivity cues, when they are going to self. Though hermaphrodites do not appear to select males based upon size, they make a selection between selfing and outcrossing by controlling the use of receptivity signals.  相似文献
