To clarify the effects of long-term warming on ecosystem matter cycling, we conducted an in situ 7-year experimental warming (2009–2015) using infrared heaters in a cool temperate semi-natural grassland in Japan. We measured plant aboveground biomass, soil total C and N, soil inorganic N (NH4 +-N and NO3 ?-N), and soil microbial biomass for 7 years (2009–2015). We also measured heterotrophic respiration for 2 years (2013–2014) and assessed net N mineralization and nitrification in 2015. We found that warming immediately increased plant aboveground biomass, but this effect ceased in 2013. However, the soil microbial biomass was continuously depressed by warming. Soil inorganic N concentrations in warmed plots substantially increased in the later years of the experiment (2013–2015) and the potential net N mineralization rate was also higher than in the earlier years. In contrast, heterotrophic respiration decreased with warming in 2013–2014. Our observations indicate that long-term warming has a contrasting effect on plants and soil microbes. In addition, the warming could have different effects on subterranean C and N cycling. To enhance the accuracy of estimation of future climate change, it is essential to continuously observe the warming effects on ecosystems and to focus on the change in subterranean C and N cycling.

Recent identification of the widespread distribution of legacy sediments deposited in historic mill ponds has increased concern regarding their role in controlling land–water nutrient transfers in the mid-Atlantic region of the US. At Big Spring Run in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, legacy sediments now overlay a buried relict hydric soil (a former wetland soil). We compared C and N processing in legacy sediment to upland soils to identify soil zones that may be sources or sinks for N transported toward streams. We hypothesized that legacy sediments would have high nitrification rates (due to recent agricultural N inputs), while relict hydric soils buried beneath the legacy sediments would be N sinks revealed via negative net nitrification and/or positive denitrification (because the buried former wetland soils are C rich but low in O2). Potential net nitrification ranged from 9.2 to 77.9 g m?2 year?1 and potential C mineralization ranged from 223 to 1,737 g m?2 year?1, with the highest rates in surface soils for both legacy sediments and uplands. Potential denitrification ranged from 0.37 to 21.72 g m?2 year?1, with the buried relict hydric soils denitrifying an average of 6.2 g m?2 year?1. Contrary to our hypothesis, relict hydric layers did not have negative potential nitrification or high positive potential denitrification rates, in part because microbial activity was low relative to surface soils, as indicated by low nitrifier population activity, low substrate induced respiration, and low exoenzyme activity. Despite high soil C concentrations, buried relict hydric soils do not provide the ecological services expected from a wetland soil. Thus, legacy sediments may dampen N removal pathways in buried relict hydric soils, while also acting as substantial sources of NO3 ? to waterways.  相似文献

Soil microbial properties play a key role in belowground ecosystem functioning, but are not well understood in forest ecosystems under nitrogen (N) enrichment. In this study, soil samples from 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers were collected from a Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii Rupr.) plantation in Northeast China after six consecutive years of N addition to examine changes in soil pH, nutrient concentrations, and microbial biomass and activities. Nitrogen addition significantly decreased soil pH and total phosphorus, but had little effect on soil total organic carbon (TOC) and total N (TN) concentrations. The NO 3 ? -N concentrations in the two soil layers under N addition were significantly higher than that in the control, while NH 4 + -N concentrations were not different. After six years of N addition, potential net N mineralization and nitrification rates were dramatically increased. Nitrogen addition decreased microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN), and MBC/TOC and MBN/TN in the 0–10 cm soil layer, but MBC/MBN was increased by 67% in the 0–10 cm soil layer. Soil basal respiration, microbial metabolic quotient (qCO2), and β-glucosidase, urease, acid phosphomonoesterase and nitrate reductase activities in the two soil layers showed little change after six years of N addition. However, soil protease and dehydrogenase activities in the 0–10 cm layer were 41% and 54% lower in the N addition treatment than in the control, respectively. Collectively, our results suggest that in the mid-term N addition leads to a decline in soil quality in larch plantations, and that different soil enzymes show differentiated responses to N addition.  相似文献

In many temperate ecosystems, rates of atmospheric nitrogen deposition remain high over winter despite decreased agricultural activity over this season. The extent to which this nitrogen is accessible for plant growth over the following growing season may depend strongly on uptake by plants and soil microorganisms from late fall through early spring, when the majority of aboveground plant tissue has senesced. We added Ca(15NO3)2 (5 atom %15N) at a rate of 2 g m?2 of N (corresponding to 100 mg 15N m?2) to the surface of plots in a temperate old field during either late fall, winter, spring melt or early spring. We quantified the recovery of excess 15N in the soil microbial biomass and soil extracts following spring melt and in aboveground plant tissue at the peak of the plant growing season. Nitrate additions had no significant effect on total aboveground plant biomass, relative species abundance or percent tissue nitrogen. However, mean excess 15N in aboveground plant tissue varied significantly among treatments, with values of 8.1, 2.6, 0.3 and 7.3 mg m?2 for late fall, winter, spring melt and early spring addition plots, respectively. Corresponding values of excess 15N were 3.1, 1.4 and 0.2 mg m?2 in microbial biomass, and 0.17, 0.07 and 0.03 mg m?2 in soil extracts, for late fall, winter and spring melt addition plots, respectively. Overall, these results indicate that nitrogen retention from late fall through early spring may depend highly on plant uptake in this system, and that only a small fraction of the nitrogen that accumulates in the winter snow pack may be available to plants.  相似文献

Urban ecosystems are expanding globally, and assessing the ecological consequences of urbanization is critical to understanding the biology of local and global change related to land use. We measured carbon (C) fluxes, nitrogen (N) cycling, and soil microbial community structure in a replicated (n=3) field experiment comparing urban lawns to corn, wheat–fallow, and unmanaged shortgrass steppe ecosystems in northern Colorado. The urban and corn sites were irrigated and fertilized. Wheat and shortgrass steppe sites were not fertilized or irrigated. Aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in urban ecosystems (383±11 C m?2 yr?1) was four to five times greater than wheat or shortgrass steppe but significantly less than corn (537±44 C m?2 yr?1). Soil respiration (2777±273 g C m?2 yr?1) and total belowground C allocation (2602±269 g C m?2 yr?1) in urban ecosystems were both 2.5 to five times greater than any other land‐use type. We estimate that for a large (1578 km2) portion of Larimer County, Colorado, urban lawns occupying 6.4% of the land area account for up to 30% of regional ANPP and 24% of regional soil respiration from land‐use types that we sampled. The rate of N cycling from urban lawn mower clippings to the soil surface was comparable with the rate of N export in harvested corn (both ~12–15 g N m?2 yr?1). A one‐time measurement of microbial community structure via phospholipid fatty acid analysis suggested that land‐use type had a large impact on microbial biomass and a small impact on the relative abundance of broad taxonomic groups of microorganisms. Our data are consistent with several other studies suggesting that urbanization of arid and semiarid ecosystems leads to enhanced C cycling rates that alter regional C budgets.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Soil contains many different C fractions which have diverse physical and chemical compositions. Examining these differential soil C fractions in response to N enrichment is helpful for better understanding soil C changes under the predominantly increasing N deposition. In this study, we used a field N addition experiment in a grassland to explore the effects of various N enrichment levels on soil C fractions.

Methods

We conducted a field manipulative experiment which used a Latin square design with six N addition levels of 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 g N m?2 year?1 since 2003 in a semiarid grassland in northern China. Soil samples were collected in August (when plants have the greatest biomass), 2011. We measured C and N concentrations in soil light fraction, microbial biomass, extractable organic matter, heavy fraction, and total soil C and N.

Results

The results showed that total soil C and N, and heavy fraction C and N were not significantly affected by N addition after 9 years of treatments. In contrast, different N enrichment levels changed soil light fraction C and N, ranging from 4.3 to 27.7 % and 3.3–30.0 %, respectively. Moreover, both light fraction C and N had a nonlinear relationship with N addition rates, and the threshold for N-induced change in light fraction C and N was near 16 g N m?2 year?1 in this semiarid grassland. Increases of soil light fraction C and N primarily resulted from changes in biotic (N-stimulated aboveground biomass) and abiotic (soil temperature, moisture and pH) factors under N enrichment. Soil microbial biomass exponentially declined with increasing N, but extractable organic C showed a positive linear response to N enrichment rates. Changes in microbial biomass C and extractable organic C were primarily due to the reduced soil pH under N addition.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that various soil C fractions differentially respond to elevated N, because different sets of biotic and abiotic factors regulate those fractions under N enrichment.  相似文献

Summary Nitrogen mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, and microbial biomass were evaluated in four representative ecosystems in east-central Minnesota. The study ecosystems included: old field, swamp forest, savanna, and upland pin oak forest. Due to a high regional water table and permeable soils, the upland and wetland ecosystems were separated by relatively short distances (2 to 5 m). Two randomly selected sites within each ecosystem were sampled for an entire growing season. Soil samples were collected at 5-week intervals to determine rates of N cycling processes and changes in microbial biomass. Mean daily N mineralization rates during five-week in situ soil incubations were significantly different among sampling dates and ecosystems. The highest annual rates were measured in the upland pin oak ecosystem (8.6 g N m–2 yr–1), and the lowest rates in the swamp forest (1.5 g N m–2 yr–1); nitrification followed an identical pattern. Denitrification was relatively high in the swamp forest during early spring (8040 g N2O–N m–2 d–1) and late autumn (2525 g N2O–N m–2 d–1); nitrification occurred at rates sufficient to sustain these losses. In the well-drained uplands, rates of denitrification were generally lower and equivalent to rates of atmospheric N inputs. Microbial C and N were consistently higher in the swamp forest than in the other ecosystems; both were positively correlated with average daily rates of N mineralization. In the subtle landscape of east-central Minnesota, rates of N cycling can differ by an order of magnitude across relatively short distances.  相似文献

In order to understand the influence of nitrogen (N) deposition on the key processes relevant to the carbon (C) balance in a bamboo plantation, a two-year field experiment involving the simulated deposition of N in a Pleioblastus amarus plantation was conducted in the rainy region of SW China. Four levels of N treatments: control (no N added), low-N (50 kg N ha?1 year?1), medium-N (150 kg N ha?1 year?1), and high-N (300 kg N ha?1 year?1) were set in the present study. The results showed that soil respiration followed a clear seasonal pattern, with the maximum rates in mid-summer and the minimum in late winter. The annual cumulative soil respiration was 585?±?43 g CO2-C m?2 year?1 in the control plots. Simulated N deposition significantly increased the mean annual soil respiration rate, fine root biomass, soil microbial biomass C (MBC), and N concentration in fine roots and fresh leaf litter. Soil respirations exhibited a positive exponential relationship with soil temperature, and a linear relationship with MBC. The net primary production (NPP) ranged from 10.95 to 15.01 Mg C ha?1 year?1 and was higher than the annual soil respiration (5.85 to 7.62 Mg C ha?1 year?1) in all treatments. Simulated N deposition increased the net ecosystem production (NEP), and there was a significant difference between the control and high N treatment NEP, whereas, the difference of NEP among control, low-N, and medium-N was not significant. Results suggest that N controlled the primary production in this bamboo plantation ecosystem. Simulated N deposition increased the C sequestration of the P. amarus plantation ecosystem through increasing the plant C pool, though CO2 emission through soil respiration was also enhanced.  相似文献

In the last decades, in particular forest ecosystems became increasingly N saturated due to elevated atmospheric N deposition, resulting from anthropogenic N emission. This led to serious consequences for the environment such as N leaching to the groundwater. Recent efforts to reduce N emissions raise the question if, and over what timescale, ecosystems recover to previous conditions. In order to study the effects on N distribution and N transformation processes under the lowered N deposition treatment, we investigated the fate of deposited NH4 +-15N in soil of a N-saturated Norway spruce forest (current N deposition: 34 kg ha?1 year?1; critical N load: 14 kg ha?1 year?1), where N deposition has been reduced to 11.5 kg ha?1 year?1 since 14.5 years. We traced the deposited 15N in needle litter, bulk soil, and amino acids, microbial biomass and inorganic N in soil. Under reduced N deposition, 123 ± 23% of the deposited N was retained in bulk soil, while this was only 72 ± 15% under ambient deposition. We presume that with reduced deposition the amount of deposited N was small enough to become completely immobilized in plant and soil and no leaching losses occurred. Trees receiving reduced N deposition showed a decline in N content as well as in 15N incorporation into needle litter, indicating reduced N plant uptake. In contrast, the distribution of 15N within the soil over active microbial biomass, microbial residues and inorganic N was not affected by the reduced N deposition. We conclude that the reduction in N deposition impacted only plant uptake and drainage losses, while microbial N transformation processes were not influenced. We assume changes in the biological N turnover to start with the onset of the decomposition of the new, N-depleted litter.  相似文献

Nitrogen cycling in forest soils across climate gradients in Eastern China   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
A 15N tracing study was carried out to investigate the potential gross nitrogen (N) dynamics in thirteen forest soils in Eastern China ranging from temperate to tropical zones (five coniferous forests, six deciduous broad-leaf forests, one temperate mixed forest, one evergreen broad-leaf forests ecosystems), and to identify the major controlling factors on N cycling in these forest ecosystems. The soil pH ranged from 4.3 to 7.9 and soil organic carbon (SOC) ranged from 6.6 g?kg?1 to 83.0 g?kg?1. The potential gross N transformation rates were quantified by 15N tracing studies where either the ammonium or nitrate pools were 15N labeled in parallel treatments. Gross mineralization rates ranged from 0.915 μg N g?1 soil day?1 to 2.718 μg N g?1 soil day?1 in the studied forest soils. The average contribution of labile organic-N (M Nlab ) to total gross mineralization (M Nrec +M Nlab ) was 86% (58% to 99%), indicating that turnover of labile organic N plays a dominant role in the studied forest ecosystems. The gross mineralization rates in coniferous forest soils were significantly lower (ranging between 0.915 and 1.228 μg N g?1 soil day?1) compared to broad-leaf forest soils (ranging from 1.621 to 2.718 μg N g?1 soil day?1) (p?<?0.01). Thus, the dominant vegetation may play an important role in regulating soil N mineralization. Nitrate production (nitrification) occurred via two pathways, oxidation of NH 4 + and organic N the forest soils. Correlations with soil pH indicated that this is a key factor controlling the oxidation of NH 4 + and organic N in theses forest ecosystems. NH 4 + oxidation decreased with a decline in pH while organic N oxidation increased. The climatic conditions (e.g. moisture status) at the various sites governed the NO 3 ? -N consumption processes (dissimilatory NO 3 ? reduction to NH 4 + (DNRA) or immobilization of NO 3 ? ). Total NO 3 ? consumption and the proportion of total NO 3 ? consumption to total NO 3 ? production decreased with an increase in the drought index of ecosystems, showing that strong interactions appear to exist between climatic condition (e.g. the drought index), N mineralization and the rate of DNRA. Interactions between vegetation, climatic conditions govern internal N cycling in these forests soils.  相似文献

High atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is expected to impair phosphorus (P) nutrition of temperate forest ecosystems. We examined N and P cycling in organic soil horizons of temperate forests exposed to long-term N addition in the northeastern USA and Scandinavia. We determined N and P concentrations, enzyme activities and net N and P mineralization rates in organic soil horizons of two deciduous (Harvard Forest, Bear Brook) and two coniferous (Klosterhede, Gårdsjön) forests which had received experimental inorganic N addition between 25 and 150 kg N ha?1 year?1 for more than 25 years. Long-term N addition increased the activity of phosphatase (+?180%) and the activity of carbon (C)- and N-acquiring enzymes (cellobiohydrolase: +?70%, chitinase: +?25%). Soil N enrichment increased the N:P ratio of organic soil horizons by up to 150%. In coniferous organic soil horizons, net N and P mineralization were small and unaffected by N addition. In deciduous organic soil horizons, net N and P mineralization rates were significantly higher than at the coniferous sites, and N addition increased net N mineralization by up to 290%. High phosphatase activities concomitant with a 40% decline in P stocks of deciduous organic soil horizons indicate increased plant P demand. In summary, projected future global increases in atmospheric N deposition may induce P limitation in deciduous forests, impairing temperate forest growth.  相似文献

Measuring nitrogen (N) transformations from organic fertilizers can help in selecting applications rates that provide sufficient soluble N to promote tree growth in short-rotation plantations. The objective of this study was to determine how organic fertilizers (papermill biosolids, liquid pig slurry) affected microbially-mediated N transformations in soils. Soil samples were collected from a hybrid poplar plantation before fertilization, 1 month after fertilizer application and at the end of the growing season. Net N mineralization and nitrification were evaluated during a 28 d laboratory incubation, while gross N transformations were assessed using a 15N isotope dilution technique. Pig slurry application increased soil ammonium (NH4-N) and nitrate (NO3-N) concentrations within 1 month, while papermill biosolids increased soil NH4-N and NO3-N concentrations at the end of the growing season. Gross N consumption rates were greater than gross N production rates. The NH4-N and NO3-N consumption rates were positively correlated with labile carbon and microbial biomass. The gross nitrification rate was 18 to 67% of the gross mineralization rate but 30% or less of the gross NH4-N consumption rate, indicating that NH4 consumption was overestimated by the isotope dilution technique. We conclude that N cycling in this hybrid poplar plantation was characterized by rapid consumption of plant-available N following N mineralization and nitrification.  相似文献

Tidal wetlands are productive ecosystems with the capacity to sequester large amounts of carbon (C), but we know relatively little about the impact of climate change on wetland C cycling in lower salinity (oligohaline and tidal freshwater) coastal marshes. In this study we assessed plant production, C cycling and sequestration, and microbial organic matter mineralization at tidal freshwater, oligohaline, and salt marsh sites along the salinity gradient in the Delaware River Estuary over four years. We measured aboveground plant biomass, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) exchange between the marsh and atmosphere, microbial sulfate reduction and methanogenesis in marsh soils, soil biogeochemistry, and C sequestration with radiodating of soils. A simple model was constructed to estimate monthly and annually integrated rates of gross ecosystem production (GEP), ecosystem respiration (ER) to carbon dioxide ( \( {\text{ER}}_{{{\text{CO}}_{2} }} \) ) or methane ( \( {\text{ER}}_{{{\text{CH}}_{4} }} \) ), net ecosystem production (NEP), the contribution of sulfate reduction and methanogenesis to ER, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) source or sink status of the wetland for 2 years (2007 and 2008). All three marsh types were highly productive but evidenced different patterns of C sequestration and GHG source/sink status. The contribution of sulfate reduction to total ER increased along the salinity gradient from tidal freshwater to salt marsh. The Spartina alterniflora dominated salt marsh was a C sink as indicated by both NEP (~140 g C m?2 year?1) and 210Pb radiodating (336 g C m?2 year?1), a minor sink for atmospheric CH4, and a GHG sink (~620 g CO2-eq m?2 year?1). The tidal freshwater marsh was a source of CH4 to the atmosphere (~22 g C–CH4 m?2 year?1). There were large interannual differences in plant production and therefore C and GHG source/sink status at the tidal freshwater marsh, though 210Pb radiodating indicated modest C accretion (110 g C m?2 year?1). The oligohaline marsh site experienced seasonal saltwater intrusion in the late summer and fall (up to 10 mS cm?1) and the Zizania aquatica monoculture at this site responded with sharp declines in biomass and GEP in late summer. Salinity intrusion was also linked to large effluxes of CH4 at the oligohaline site (>80 g C–CH4 m?2 year?1), making this site a significant GHG source (>2,000 g CO2-eq m?2 year?1). The oligohaline site did not accumulate C over the 2 year study period, though 210Pb dating indicated long term C accumulation (250 g C m?2 year?1), suggesting seasonal salt-water intrusion can significantly alter C cycling and GHG exchange dynamics in tidal marsh ecosystems.  相似文献

Overwinter and snowmelt processes are thought to be critical to controllersof nitrogen (N) cycling and retention in northern forests. However, therehave been few measurements of basic N cycle processes (e.g.mineralization, nitrification, denitrification) during winter and littleanalysis of the influence of winter climate on growing season N dynamics. In this study, we manipulated snow cover to assess the effects of soilfreezing on in situ rates of N mineralization, nitrification and soilrespiration, denitrification (intact core, C2H2 – based method),microbial biomass C and N content and potential net N mineralization andnitrification in two sugar maple and two yellow birch stands with referenceand snow manipulation treatment plots over a two year period at theHubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, U.S.A. The snowmanipulation treatment, which simulated the late development of snowpackas may occur in a warmer climate, induced mild (temperatures >–5 °C) soil freezing that lasted until snowmelt. The treatmentcaused significant increases in soil nitrate (NO3 )concentrations in sugar maple stands, but did not affect mineralization, nitrification, denitrification or microbial biomass, and had no significanteffects in yellow birch stands. Annual N mineralization and nitrificationrates varied significantly from year to year. Net mineralization increasedfrom 12.0 g N m–2 y–1 in 1998 to 22 g N m–2 y–1 in 1999 and nitrification increased from 8 g N m–2 y–1 in 1998 to 13 g N m–2 y–1 in 1999.Denitrification rates ranged from 0 to 0.65 g N m–2 y–1. Ourresults suggest that mild soil freezing must increase soil NO3 levels by physical disruption of the soil ecosystem and not by direct stimulation of mineralization and nitrification. Physical disruption canincrease fine root mortality, reduce plant N uptake and reduce competitionfor inorganic N, allowing soil NO3 levels to increase evenwith no increase in net mineralization or nitrification.

In arctic and alpine ecosystems, soil nitrogen (N) dynamics can differ markedly between winter and summer months, and nitrogen losses can be measurable during the spring and fall transitions. To explore the effect of seasonality on biogeochemical processes in a temperate alpine environment, we used a combination of field incubations (year-round) and 15N tracer additions (late fall, early spring, summer) to characterize soil N dynamics in a wet and dry meadow in the Sierra Nevada, California. The snowmelt to early summer season marked a period of high 15N uptake and turnover in the two soils, coincident with the increase in microbial N pools at the start of snowmelt (wet and dry meadow); an increase in net N mineralization and net nitrification as snowmelt progressed (wet meadow only); and measureable net production of 15N-NH4 + in mid-summer (wet and dry meadow). Whereas fluctuations in microbial biomass were generally synchronous between the wet and dry meadow soils, only wet meadow soils appeared to mineralize N in response to declines in the microbial N pool. Net N mineralization and net nitrification rates in the dry meadow soil were negligible on all but one sampling date, in spite of periodic decreases in biomass of up to 60%. Across both sites, high 15N recoveries in microbial biomass N, rapid 15N-NH4 + turnover, and low or negative net 15N-NH4 + fluxes suggested tight cycling of N, particularly in the late fall and early spring.  相似文献

The impacts of global climatic change on belowground ecological processes of terrestrial ecosystems are still not clear. We therefore conducted an experiment in the subalpine coniferous forest ecosystem of the eastern edges of the Tibetan Plateau to study roots of Picea asperata seedlings and rhizosphere soil responses to soil warming and nitrogen availability from April 2007 to December 2008. The seedlings were subjected to two levels of temperature (ambient; infrared heater warming) and two nitrogen levels (0 or 25 g m−2year−1 N). We used a free air temperature increase from an overhead infrared heater to raise both air and soil temperature by 2.1 and 2.6°C, respectively. The results showed that warming alone significantly increased total biomass, coarse root biomass and fine root biomass of P. asperata seedlings. Both total biomass and fine root biomass were increased, but coarse root biomass was significantly decreased by nitrogen fertilization and warming combined with nitrogen fertilization. Warming induced a prominent increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) and NO3 -N of rhizosphere soil, while nitrogen fertilization significantly decreased SOC and NH4 +-N of rhizosphere soil. The warming, fertilization and warming × N fertilization interaction decreased soil microbial C significantly, but substantially increased soil microbial N. These results suggest that nitrogen deposition combined with warmer temperatures under future climatic change possibly will have no effect on fine root production of P. asperata seedlings, but could enhance the nitrification process of their rhizosphere soils in subalpine coniferous forests.  相似文献

During two intensive field campaigns in summer and autumn 2004 nitrogen (N2O, NO/NO2) and carbon (CO2, CH4) trace gas exchange between soil and the atmosphere was measured in a sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) forest in Hungary. The climate can be described as continental temperate. Fluxes were measured with a fully automatic measuring system allowing for high temporal resolution. Mean N2O emission rates were 1.5 μg N m−2 h−1 in summer and 3.4 μg N m−2 h−1 in autumn, respectively. Also mean NO emission rates were higher in autumn (8.4 μg N m−2 h−1) as compared to summer (6.0 μg N m−2 h−1). However, as NO2 deposition rates continuously exceeded NO emission rates (−9.7 μg N m−2 h−1 in summer and −18.3 μg N m−2 h−1 in autumn), the forest soil always acted as a net NO x sink. The mean value of CO2 fluxes showed only little seasonal differences between summer (81.1 mg C m−2 h−1) and autumn (74.2 mg C m−2 h−1) measurements, likewise CH4uptake (summer: −52.6 μg C m−2 h−1; autumn: −56.5 μg C m−2 h−1). In addition, the microbial soil processes net/gross N mineralization, net/gross nitrification and heterotrophic soil respiration as well as inorganic soil nitrogen concentrations and N2O/CH4 soil air concentrations in different soil depths were determined. The respiratory quotient (ΔCO2 resp ΔO2 resp−1) for the uppermost mineral soil, which is needed for the calculation of gross nitrification via the Barometric Process Separation (BaPS) technique, was 0.8978 ± 0.008. The mean value of gross nitrification rates showed only little seasonal differences between summer (0.99 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1) and autumn measurements (0.89 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1). Gross rates of N mineralization were highest in the organic layer (20.1–137.9 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1) and significantly lower in the uppermost mineral layer (1.3–2.9 μg N kg−1 SDW d−1). Only for the organic layer seasonality in gross N mineralization rates could be demonstrated, with highest mean values in autumn, most likely caused by fresh litter decomposition. Gross mineralization rates of the organic layer were positively correlated with N2O emissions and negatively correlated with CH4 uptake, whereas soil CO2 emissions were positively correlated with heterotrophic respiration in the uppermost mineral soil layer. The most important abiotic factor influencing C and N trace gas fluxes was soil moisture, while the influence of soil temperature on trace gas exchange rates was high only in autumn.  相似文献

We investigated the individual and interactive effects of moderately elevated CO2 (ambient air + 100 ppm) and/or O3 (40–50 ppb) on soil N cycling and microbial biomass N in a 3-year open-top chamber experiment conducted in meadow mesocosms. The results show that elevated O3 decreased the concentrations of mineral N and NH4+-N in the mesocosm soil in the last growing season (2004). Total N, NO3-N, microbial biomass N, decomposition rate, potential nitrification and denitrification were not affected by elevated O3 and/or CO2. It is thus concluded that the proposed future ambient O3 and CO2 levels, such as used in this experiment, may not induce major changes in the below-ground N processes in N-poor northern European hay meadow ecosystems.  相似文献
