A branchial osteogenetic neoplasm affecting a barbel Barbus barbus plebejus (Valenciennes, 1829) is described. The osteoblasts' pleomorphism, the lack of a well-developed and complete separation, the presence of eccentric, terminal proliferative edges infiltrating the lining tissues and the abundant tumour matrix suggest a histopathological diagnosis of a 'productive osteoblastic osteosarcoma'. The occurrence of eosinophilic granule cells (EGCs) scattered among neoplastic tissue is discussed in relation to the neoplastic growth and the inflammatory reaction, with reference to recent discoveries in mammalian mast cell biology.  相似文献

Spawning strategies of lowland river fishes include single spawning, where reproduction generally occurs in early spring to provide 0+ fish with an extended growth season through the summer, but with a high risk of stochastic mortality events occurring, such as early summer floods. This risk can be reduced by multiple or protracted spawning strategies, where 0+ fish are produced over an extended period, often into mid-summer, but with the trade-off being a shorter growth season. The spawning strategies of cypriniform fish were explored in the River Teme, a spate river in Western England, which has non-indigenous European barbel Barbus barbus present. Sampling 0+ fish in spring and summer and across three spawning periods, B. barbus, chub Squalius cephalus and minnow Phoxinus phoxinus always revealed multiple spawning events, with 0+ fish of < 20 mm present in samples collected from June to August. Fish below 20 mm in August remained relatively small by the end of their growth season (October). For dace Leuciscus leuciscus, only single spawning events were evident, but with 0+ dace always being relatively large. Therefore, multiple spawning appears to be a common strategy that provides resilience in 0+ fish against stochastic mortality events in lowland rivers.

Nase Chondrostoma nasus L. is one of the most threatened reophilic fish species in Poland. At present it has almost disappeared from the northern and central parts of its range while in the south its abundance has decreased. Protection of the species through closed seasons, catch and size limits has not been sufficient, and active enhancement through stocking is now applied. Developing the technology of hormonally induced spawning and adapting carp pond culture techniques for the rearing of nase enabled substantial enhancement efforts. According to Polish Anglers Association, stocking has increased from 50 000 of hatchlings in 1994 to 840 000 of hatchlings, 568 000 summer and 900 000 autumn juveniles, and 1720 two year‐old fish in 2002. At present the problems to be solved urgently are preserving the genetic diversity of cultured and wild populations, and evaluating stocking effectiveness.  相似文献

Using the phylogeographic framework, we assessed the DNA sequence variation at the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene across the distribution range of the barbel Barbus barbus, a widely distributed European cyprinid. Reciprocal monophyly of non-Mediterranean European and Balkan/Anatolian populations is taken as evidence for a long-term barrier to gene flow, and interpreted as a consequence of survival of the species in two separate refugia during several later glacial cycles. Lack of profound genealogical divergence across Europe from western France to the northwestern Black Sea basin is consistent with recent colonization of this area from a single glacial refuge, which was probably located in the Danube River basin. This may have occurred in two steps: into the Western European river basins during the last interglacial, and throughout the Central European river basins after the last glacial. The populations from the Balkans and Anatolia apparently did not contribute mitochondrial DNA to the post-Pleistocene colonization of non-Mediterranean Europe. Lack of detectable variation within the Balkans/Anatolia is attributed mainly to recent expansion throughout these regions, facilitated by the freshwater conditions and seashore regression in the Black Sea during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene.  相似文献

Endocrine disruption and the feminization of male barbel Barbus barbus was examined during a 4‐year investigation in the River Jihlava (Danube basin, Czech Republic) that consisted of temporal monitoring of sexual status in 993 tagged barbel and histological verification of sex change in 149 dissected specimens. In 343 recaptured barbel, six specimens had altered (protandric) gamete production, which is a rather exceptional phenomenon (2.8% of the total number of recaptured original tagged males) and does not explain the unbalanced (biased) sexual and size structure of barbel populations that is often observed. Histological gonadal examination revealed intersexuality to be sporadic (2.0%) and more frequent (14.8%) in river stretches of relatively lower and greater organic pollution loads, respectively. The screening of vitellogenin (Vtg) in blood plasma revealed elevated, strongly fluctuating concentrations in males, unrelated to fish size or age, which reached a median of 0.190 μg ml?1 in the moderately polluted stretches, whereas a significantly higher value of 0.732 μg ml?1 was observed in strongly polluted stream stretches. These levels were apparently a result of elevated levels of ambient xenoestrogens.  相似文献

The movement of barbel Barbus barbus free embryos in the interstitial zone and the timing of larval emergence were studied for 12 days in an artificial stream. After egg fertilization (day 1), hatching occurred on day 6, downstream interstitial movements of free embryos on day 9 and emergence and downstream movement of all larvae on day 12, with density of free embryos decreasing as day of emergence approached. The results suggest that a memory‐based response of B. barbus to environmental conditions, previously observed in 0+ year juveniles, begins at an early age.  相似文献

The microhabitat distribution of two congeneric species Dactylogyrus carpathicus and D. malleus (Monogenea) parasitizing the gills of the barbel (Barbus barbus L.) was investigated. We tested whether congeneric species exhibited microhabitat preference and whether interspecific interactions could be attributed to the microhabitat segregation of congeners. The outlying mean index method was used to evaluate species microhabitats. Gill variables (different microhabitats within gills) were used as environmental factors characterizing the gills. When abundances of both species were highest, and no significant difference was found between the abundance of the two species, the gill segments and gill areas were the most important factors segregating the Dactylogyrus species on the gills. Niche overlap was low within each of the four gill arches, and parasites were segregated in the same microhabitats within each gill arch. When abundances of both species were low, each monogenean species was segregated at the level of the gill arches. When abundances of both species increased, the niche and overlap between species increased. The distribution of both congeneric species confirmed microhabitat preference within the gills. The results suggest that microhabitat preference is dependent on species abundances, species being segregated in the case of low abundance, possibly to increasing mating opportunities. Both niche and overlap between species increased with species abundance. In the case of the high abundance of both species, microhabitat preference seems to be related to interspecific interactions between monogenean species, as previously found for endoparasitic species.  相似文献

The European barbel Barbus barbus L. is considered a ‘flag’ species for river conservation and sport fishing, but it is increasingly threatened in its native range of distribution. To provide accurate age estimates during early life for appropriate management and conservation measures, the bias and precision of otolith (daily) micro-increment counts were evaluated and age determinations validated on laboratory-reared embryos and larvae. Out of the three pairs of otoliths, the lapillus and sagitta provided reliable age estimates for free embryos and larvae up to 17 days of (known) age post-fertilisation, with first micro-increment formation occurring five days postfertilisation. On the other hand, micro-increments on asterisci formed only 16–17 days post-fertilisation. There was agreement in microincrement counts based on lapilli and sagittae, but not between interpreters, indicating that despite consistency between the two pairs of otoliths extensive training and experience are required for reliable age interpretation. The ability to estimate the ages of 0+ B. barbus from their otoliths will contribute to a better understanding of growth rates from both hatchery-stocked and native/introduced cohorts.  相似文献

The influence of the daily distribution of light on the duration of the breeding season of the barbel was investigated. Interrupted night photoperiods (6L:2D:2L:14D or 6L:8.5D:2L:7.5D) allowed spawnings of male and female barbel (previously maintained under 10L:14D or 16.5L:7.5D) to continue, whereas a 2 or 8.5 h shorter photoperiod (8L: 16D) inhibited both sexes. The number of spawnings for each female was significantly higher under 6L:2D:2L:14D or 6L:8.5D:2L:7.5D (respectively 2.9 and 3.6 spawnings on average) than in control groups maintained under 8L:16D (0.6 and 2.1 spawnings on average). These results suggest that there is a daily rhythm of photosensitivity in the barbel.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The annual cycle of intraovarian egg size in 124 mature barbel caught during a 3-year period was investigated. Storage methods, subsampling and measuring procedures were assessed and found to be reliable. Estimates of fecundity were made on thirty-two barbel containing developing ripening eggs. A new egg separation and counting technique was used modified from the volumetric ratio method described by Bagenal & Braum (1968). Fecundity estimates were found to be accurate by comparison with manual counts. Barbel ovaries contained two egg groups throughout the year. A third large, ripening egg group developed prior to spawning. The diameter of the ripening eggs, measured in arbitrary optical units, was significantly correlated with fork length. Large fish spawned bigger eggs than small fish. Fecundity was logarithmically related to fork length and ovary weight and linearly related to somatic weight. The mean diameter of the ripening intraovarian egg group was also logarithmically related to ovary weight. Heavier ovaries contained proportionally fewer, but larger, ripening eggs than small ovaries.  相似文献

Incidences of gross morphological disorders in barbel ( Barbus barbus ) were investigated in three rivers in southern England. The water quality at the sites chosen for study on the Rivers Teme, Kennet and Lee were classified (according to the criteria of the National Water Council, 1978) as 1A, IB and 2, respectively. Generally, low levels of gross morphological abnormalities were seen in fish caught in the Teme and Kennet, although there were incidences of ocular disorders and extra barbules in 10 and 7%, respectively, of the Kennet fish. No tumours were found in barbel from the River Teme whereas there was a 2% incidence in the Kennet fish. In contrast barbel from the River Lee showed high levels of all the gross morphological disorders, especially haemorrhagic patches on the ventral surface (36%) and ocular disorders (72%). Tumours were seen in 25% of the barbel caught in the River Lee. The incidences of most of these gross morphological disorders did not appear to be age related. The possibility that these disorders were related to water quality is discussed.  相似文献

However, despite the general environmental degradation of many British rivers, and in contrast with some native freshwater fishes, the barbel is now more widely distributed than it was a century ago. 1. Actomyosin extracts of trunk, heart, and head muscles from barbel (Barbus barbus L.) were analyzed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to study their myosin heavy chain composition. 2. Four heavy chain isoforms were found: trunk white, trunk red, and ventricle muscles yielded one heavy chain typical of the muscle type; head muscles devoid of red fibers displayed two heavy chain isoforms, the slow migrating one corresponding to the trunk white muscle type. 3. The electrophoretic mobility of red and ventricle myosin heavy chains related to that of white isoforms appeared highly modified by the glycerol content of the gels.  相似文献

The role of photoperiod as an environmental factor controlling reproduction, particularly the duration and ending of the breeding season, in the barbel was investigated by tank experiments. The experiments used a population of barbel matured in captivity which were stripped of eggs at frequent intervals: 10–15 'spawnings'for each female were obtained at 15-day intervals.
A decreasing photoperiod (16·5 light: 7·5 dark→8L: 16D), for an annual cycle contracted to 6 months duration, inhibited the spawning of both female and male fish. This allowed two periods of reproduction (February-May and September-November) within one year. Under natural or constant (10L: 14D) photoperiod conditions, spawning came to an end spontaneously. The rate (accelerated, slow or natural) of daylength increase did not affect the onset of spawning.  相似文献

Aim of the study was to determine the effect of initial larval density on growth and survival of the common barbel Barbus barbus (L.) under controlled conditions. The experiment examined fish density from 20 to 200 ind. L?1 during intensive rearing at 25°C. Rearing lasted 21 days whereby the average total fish length, weight and survival were recorded. During the entire period fish were fed live nauplii Artemia sp. The data provided the basis for calculating the specific growth rate (SGR), Fulton’s condition index (K), and analysis of the relationship between biomass and the stocking density. The documentation was also used to determine the level of ontogeny. The study data obtained indicated that initial larval density has no effect on survival (over 98% in each treatment), level of ontogeny, or on the rearing indexes. Fish achieved the juvenile stage during the second week of rearing (<23 mm total length). At the end of the experiment fish reached 26.50–27.78 mm TL. SGR ranged from 22.75 to 23.53 (% day?1). No statistical differences were found among all treatments (P > 0.05). The findings of this study suggest that stocking density in common barbel larvae is not a factor limiting growth or the ontogenetic development rate during initial rearing. This creates considerable potential for improvement in stocking material production under controlled conditions and should have a positive effect on the economic effectiveness of production.  相似文献

Enzymes, representing 23 genetic loci, were studied in n = 320 European river barbels (Barbus barbus L. 1758) from the contact zone of the Rhine and the upper Danube. Barbel revealed the highest heterozygosity estimate (He = 0.137) of 10 sympatric freshwater fishes (range He = 0.017–0.106). The geographical genetic subdivision in barbel (GST = 0.1690) surpassed the respective estimates in two other cyprinid species (GST ≤ 0.1415) and in three anadromous fishes (range GST = 0.0330–0.1290) from the same study area, but it fell short of the spatial genetic fragmentation of two resident salmonid species (GST ≥ 0.2678) and of sculpins (GST = 0.8489). The theoretical gene flow in the unobstructed Danube was NemDAN = 4.98, and across the weirs in the southern Rhine NemRHE = 1.84. The Rhine/Danube watershed exceeded any other isolation effect on the gene pool despite a low genetic distance (DRHE/DAN = 0.0321) among Rhenish and Danubian samples. The range history in central Europe might imply the colonization of the study area from a Danubian and from a Rhenish or a Rhôdanian refuge. The concluded admixture of eastern and western barbels has produced a weakly pronounced cline of increasing allozymic affinity of Rhenish to Danubian barbels in the southern Rhine system. Oberschwaben has served as an important colonization pathway in the phylogeographical exchange between the Danube and west Europe. The influence of stocking for fisheries on the allozymes is not known precisely, but it appears to be of minor importance.  相似文献

In the spring of 1974 the migration and spawning behaviour of barbel, Barbus barbus (L.) were observed. The migration and behaviour of males prior to the spawning attempts may be strategies designed to increase the quota of receptive females experienced by each male. Spawning attempts were divided into two categories: successful and failed. Successful attempts comprised six sequential sub-events: approach period, pre-spawning phase, spawning, post-spawning phase, dispersal period and inter-spawning period. The spawning and post-spawning phases did not occur in a failed attempt. The success or failure of attempts was dependent upon the number of males present. The advantage gained by females abandoning attempts when the male densities were high is discussed. In both the pre-spawning phase of failed attempts and the post-spawning phase of successful attempts, males attempted to drive away other male competitors by the use of male 'chase away' interactions.  相似文献

In a 40 day experiment, barbel Barbus barbus juveniles were fed a dry diet continuously, or food was withheld for 2, 5 or 10 days, and then resumed feeding. Improved feed utilization efficiency allowed fish deprived of food for 2 or 5 days to fully compensate for body mass loss. Short‐term food deprivation as a method of preventing negative effects of overfeeding in intensive rearing of juvenile B. barbus is proposed.  相似文献

The reproductive behaviour of two species of barbel ( Barbus barbus and Barbus meridionalis ) was investigated by means of aquarium experiments in several matings of six combinations. The reproductive behaviour of the two species appears to be similar and hybridizations were observed, showing that no complete behavioural barrier blocks the mating of the two species.  相似文献
