The chemical composition of the now widespread tropical aquatic fern Salvinia molestawas analysed with regard to its suitability as a source of forage for ruminants. Three different stages of plant growth collected in Kerala, India, were air dried, brought to Germany, and used for Weende analysis, detergent fibre analysis, and the determination of gross energy, amino acids, tannins, and minerals. The concentration of 12.4% crude protein in sand-corrected dry matter (DM) and of some other nutrients in Salviniais comparable to that in conventional forage. However, the high content of crude ash (17.3% in DM) and of lignin (13.7%) and the presence of tannins (0.93%) may reduce acceptance as well as digestibility and therefore restrict the use of Salviniaas a potential feed source for ruminants.  相似文献

Digestibility is a key parameter in the evaluation of feeds; however, the measurements on animals require heavy experimental trials, which are hardly feasible when large numbers of determinations are required – for example, in genetic studies. This experiment aimed at investigating the possibility to predict digestibility from NIRS spectra measured on faeces. A total of 196 samples were available from a digestibility experiment investigating the effects of age and genetic background of Large White pigs fed the same diet, rich in fibre (NDF=21.4% DM). Digestibility of dry matter (dDM), organic matter (dOM), nitrogen content (dN), energy (dE) and apparent digestible energy content (ADE) were calculated, as well as total N content of faeces (N). The faeces samples were submitted to reflectance NIRS analysis after freeze-drying and grinding. Calibration errors and validation errors were, respectively, 0.08 and 0.13% DM for total N in faeces, 0.97% and 1.08% for dDM, 0.79% and 1.04% for dOM, 1.04% and 1.47% for dN, 0.87% and 1.12% for dE and 167 and 213 kJ/kg DM for ADE. These results indicate that NIRS can account for digestibility differences due to animal factors, with an acceptable accuracy. NIRS appears to be a promising tool for large-scale evaluations of digestibility. It could also be used for the study of digestibility of different feeds, after appropriate calibration based on a wide range of feed types.  相似文献

Abstract

In a study to evaluate some roughages and agricultural wastes and concentrates from Dakahlia Governorate, we came to the following conclusions:

Concerning the roughages and agricultural wastes studied here, there were variations in their chemical and cell-wall composition and in vitro digestibilities among them and among sampling locations. These variations were found too in mineral results. Generally, these forages are characterized by their low crude protein content, in vitro dry matter digestibility, low phosphorus, zinc and selenium and high ash, crude fibre, calcium and iron content.

Chemical analysis of the concentrates revealed variations among feeds and among sampling locations. These concentrates varied too in their mineral contents especially in calcium, sodium, iron and manganese. Sampling location affected also mineral contents. Generally, concentrates reflected low calcium and high phosphorus contents than required for ruminants.

Hence, the studied agricultural wastes could be used as novel feed ingredients in diet formulation for ruminants with improving their mineral contents by mixing with concentrates with correct mineral content and important ratios among different minerals in the whole diet as required by animals.  相似文献

Tropical forests throughout the world are home to a guild of small ruminants that consume fruit as a substantial portion of their diet. Because the rumen is relatively inefficient at digesting nonstructural carbohydrates and only slowly digests cellulose, the feeding adaptations of frugivorous ruminants are enigmatic. We examined the nutritional value of wild figs to blue duikers, one of the smallest and most frugivorous ruminants, through chemical analyses and a series of digestion trials with six species of wild African figs. These figs were high in fat, protein, cell wall, lignin and Ca : P ratios, low in sugar and starch, and high in unextractable, fibre‐bound tannins when compared with many other fruits. The fibre‐bound tannins and protein caused protein digestibility and nitrogen balance to be consistently low or negative. The high fibre content of the figs allowed duikers to only digest 30–60% of energy contained in the figs. However, duikers were able to consume enough digestible energy to maintain body mass during 4‐day trials. Therefore, a ruminant digestive system is beneficial to mammals eating high fibre, high‐tannin tropical fruit like figs, especially if the mammal is small enough to harvest a sufficient amount to meet its daily energy requirements and has adaptations for reducing the effects of tannins on protein digestibility.  相似文献

The evolution of feeding systems for ruminants towards evaluation of diets in terms of multiple responses requires the updating of the calculation of nutrient supply to the animals to make it more accurate on aggregated units (feed unit, or UF, for energy and protein digestible in the intestine, or PDI, for metabolizable protein) and to allow prediction of absorbed nutrients. The present update of the French system is based on the building and interpretation through meta-analysis of large databases on digestion and nutrition of ruminants. Equations involved in the calculation of UF and PDI have been updated, allowing: (1) prediction of the out flow rate of particles and liquid depending on the level of intake and the proportion of concentrate, and the use of this in the calculation of ruminal digestion of protein and starch from in situ data; (2) the system to take into account the effects of the main factors of digestive interactions (level of intake, proportion of concentrate, rumen protein balance) on organic matter digestibility, energy losses in methane and in urine; (3) more accurate calculation of the energy available in the rumen and the efficiency of its use for the microbial protein synthesis. In this renewed model UF and PDI values of feedstuffs vary depending on diet composition, and intake level. Consequently, standard feed table values can be considered as being only indicative. It is thus possible to predict the nutrient supply on a wider range of diets more accurately and in particular to better integrate energy×protein interactions occurring in the gut.  相似文献

Because small ruminants (<15 kg) have a high ratio of metabolic rate to fermentation capacity, they are expected to select and require low-fiber, nutrient-dense concentrate diets. However, recent studies suggest that small ruminants may not be as limited in their digestive capacity as previously thought. In this study, we examined harvesting, rumination, digestion, and passage of three diets (domestic figs Ficus carica, fresh alfalfa Medicago sativa, and Pacific willow leaves Salix lasiandra) ranging from 10 to 50% neutral detergent fiber content (NDF) in captive blue duikers (Cephalophus monticola, 4 kg). Harvesting and rumination rates were obtained by observing and videotaping animals on each diet, and digestibility and intake were determined by conducting total collection digestion trials. We estimated mean retention time of liquid and particulate digesta by administering Co-EDTA and forages labelled with YbNO3 in a pulse dose and monitoring fecal output over 4 days. Duikers harvested and ruminated the fig diet faster than the alfalfa and willow diets. Likewise, they achieved higher dry matter, energy, NDF, and protein digestibility when eating figs, yet achieved a higher daily digestible energy intake on the fresh willow and alfalfa than on the figs by eating proportionately more of these forages. Duikers maintained a positive nitrogen balance on all diets, including figs, which contained only 6.3% crude protein. Mean retention time of cell wall in the duikers’ digestive tract declined with increasing NDF and cellulose content of the diet. Digestibility coefficients and mean retention times of these small ruminants were virtually equivalent to those measured for ruminants two orders of magnitude larger, suggesting that they are well adapted for a mixed diet. Although commercial broiler feed is usually differently conditioned before pelleting, the nutritional consequences of fine grinding or expanding as pre-pelleting treatments are poorly defined so far. Therefore, the effects of these two pre-treatments on nutrient digestibility, broiler performance and digestive tract of broilers were tested. In order to investigate possible interactions between pre-treatments and diet composition two diets differing in rapeseed expeller proportion were tested in a two by two factorial design. Thus, four diets were designed including two diets containing 6% rapeseed expeller (RSE) which were pre-treated by fine grinding (6%FgP) or expanding (6%ExP), and two corresponding diets containing 12% RSE (12%FgP and 12%ExP). For the experiments, 864 male broilers were used. There was a significant diet-by-technical feed treatment (TFT) interaction in case of the digestibility of all considered crude nutrients (p < 0.05). Diet 6%ExP showed higher crude protein digestibility compared to other feeds (p < 0.001). The highest digestibility of organic matter, ether extract, crude fibre and N-free extractives achieved diet 12%FgP. Diets 6%ExP and 12%FgP showed higher N-corrected metabolisable energy content (p < 0.001). TFT affected daily feed intake (DFI) and body weight (BW) gain in a diet-dependent manner (p < 0.001). Feeding of 6%FgP enhanced DFI and BW gain compared to other feeds but 6%ExP reduced both parameters (p < 0.001). Weights of proventriculi and gizzards of animals fed 6%ExP were increased compared with 6%FgP (p < 0.01). In contrast, proventricular length in animals fed 6%FgP was increased compared with diet 6%ExP (p = 0.042). Moreover, animals fed 6%FgP had wider proventriculi than animals fed 12%FgP (p = 0.023). Feed 6%ExP increased proventricular weight compared to 12%ExP (p = 0.001). With regard to the strong relationships between diet and TFT no specific processing method can be recommended according to considered nutritional aspects. A marked prevention of proventricular dilatation due to pellet feeding could not be realised by various used TFT or feed formulations. Used amounts of RSE had no obvious adverse effects on considered nutritional aspects.  相似文献

North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) subsist predominantly on low-protein, high-fiber, high-tannin diets. Therefore, we measured the porcupine's ability to digest dry matter, fiber, and protein by conducting digestion trials on eight natural forages and one pelleted ration varying in concentration of fiber, nitrogen, and tannins. On these diets, dry matter intake ranged from 5 to 234 g/kg(0.75)/d and dry matter digestibility ranged from 62% to 96%. Porcupines digested highly lignified fiber better than many large hindgut fermenters and ruminants. The porcupine's ability to digest fiber may be explained, in part, by their lengthy mean retention time of particles (38.43+/-0.56 h). True nitrogen digestibility was 92% for nontannin forages and pellets. Endogenous urinary nitrogen was 205 mg N/kg(0.75)/d, and metabolic fecal nitrogen was 2.8 g N/kg dry matter intake. Porcupines achieved nitrogen balance at relatively low levels of nitrogen intake (346 mg N/kg(0.75)/d). Tannins reduced the porcupines' ability to digest protein. However, the reduction in protein digestion was not predictable from the amount of bovine serum albumin precipitated. Like many herbivores, porcupines may ameliorate the effects of certain tannins in natural forages on protein digestibility through physiological and behavioral adaptations.  相似文献

Nutritive values of the branches from Olea europaea trees cut at 25, 50, 75 or 100 cm distance from the tip were evaluated by determination of the in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM), metabolizable energy (ME), net energy lactation (NEL), and presence nutritional and anti-nutritional components. The values of nutritive components, nitrogen forms, IVDOM, ME and NEL declined and concentrations of crude fiber and cell wall constituents increased with the increase in cutting length. Total phenols, hydrolysable tannins and condensed tannins amounted to 70, 17 and 0.6 g/kg DM, respectively. The addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG, 6000) to the plant samples incubated with rumen fluid at a ratio of (2:1 PEG:substrate) increased the values of IVDOM, ME and NEL by 40 g/kg DM, 0.59 MJ/kg DM and 0.42 MJ/kg DM, respectively. IVDOM, ME and NEL were negatively correlated with crude fiber and cell wall constituents but positively correlated with nitrogen forms and non-fiber carbohydrates. Olive pruning branches in diameter <3 mm could be used as sources of feeds for small ruminants.  相似文献

In animal production, endogenous protein losses associated with the digestion process are important losses, but difficult to measure. Measuring methods include feeding N‐free diets, regression techniques based on amino acid profiles, and separating feed protein and endogenous protein by markers like homoarginine, hydrolysed casein or stable isotopes like 15N. Endogenous losses arise from saliva, digestive enzymes, bile, shedded epithelial cells and mucins and may be extra stimulated by the presence in feeds of antinutritional factors (ANF) such as lectins, trypsin inhibitors (TI), tannins and fibre. The impact of such factors may differ between non‐ruminants and ruminants. The magnitude of the effect of the different factors is quantified and some of the consequences for protein deposition and nitrogen losses to the environment are discussed.  相似文献

Twenty-six winter wheat forages (cultivars Slepjner, Hussar and Cadenza) harvested at three stages of maturity in each of two years, were conserved with or without Maxgrass additive or with urea (20 or 40 g kg−1 dry matter; DM) in 200 l barrels. The forages were analysed for in vivo digestibility in wethers, chemical composition, in vitro rumen fluid-pepsin digestibility, in vitro neutral detergent-cellulase plus gamannase digestibility (NCGD), in vitro fermentation gas production and in situ rumen degradability. Forages were also scanned using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) and calibration equations developed for predicting in vivo digestibility. In vivo digestible organic matter content (DOMD) was poorly predicted by cell wall content (r2≤0.19), NCGD (r2≤0.41), rumen fluid DOMD (r2≤0.41), rumen degradability (r2≤0.44) and in vitro gas production (r2≤0.26). Although crude protein content was a better predictor (r2≤0.48), the relationship differed (P<0.05) with the year of harvest of the forages. In contrast, NIRS was a more accurate and consistent predictor of DOMD in vivo (r2=0. 87). This study indicates that traditional laboratory-based feed evaluation techniques are unsuitable for predicting the DOMD of WCW, but that NIRS holds promise. However, as only 26 forages were used to derive the calibration equation, further research is required using large (150) data sets to validate the promise shown by NIRS and enable its adoption by the advisory services.  相似文献

The influence of physical treatment‐expansion and flaking‐on crude proteins degradability in the rumen was studied in maize, maize‐gluten feed, rape extracted meal and in the expanded one at 120°C and 150°C, rape cake, wheat and flaked wheat by in sacco method. The enzymatic digestibility of crude protein in the rumen undegraded residues of the above mentioned feeds was determined by an enzymatically in vitro method.

The treatment of feed decreased significantly the original solubility and theoretical degradability of crude proteins, and the amount of undegraded crude proteins was increased. Positive influence on the amount of enzymatically digested crude protein was determined in rape expanded at 120 °C and 150 °C (60, 61 and/or 68%). Flaking of wheat had a similar effect. Enzymatic digestibility at undegraded rests where increased by 8–10% after the heat treatment and it remained almost unchanged in expanded maize‐gluten feed.  相似文献

An attempt was made to predict the energy value of mixed pig feeds from chemical composition alone, using multiple linear regression analysis. A total of 24 commercial mixed pig feeds were collected on the Belgian market and analysed for various chemical parameters. The digestibility of the Weende nutrients was also determined. For several energy systems used in the European Community (EC), the most reliable regression is given for one to seven independent variables. It was finally found that Nettoenergie Fett (Schiemann et al., 1971), net energy growth (A. Just, 1975, personal communication), digestible energy (Schiemann et al., 1971), metabolizable energy (Just, 1975), Gesamtnährstoffe and total digestible nutrients were most accurately predicted when the following five variables were entered in the regression equation: crude protein, crude fat and the three nitrogen-free extractives (NFE) fractions: starch, invert sugars and “other NFE” (= NFE — starch — invert sugars).  相似文献

In the EEC countries, eight different energy systems are used to evaluate pig feeds: Nettoenergie Fett (NEFs); Net Energy Growth (NEGs); Gesamtnährstoff (GN); Energiezahl Schwein (EZS) (original and modified forms); Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN); Digestible Energy (DE); and Metabolizable Energy (ME). In order to evaluate commercial mixed feeds according to these different energy systems, 24 feeds (300 kg in 50-kg bags) were bought on the Belgian market and analysed for crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre, nitrogen extractives (NFE), moisture, ash, starch and sugars. The digestibility of protein, ether extract, crude fibre and NFE fraction of each feed was determined with 4 barrows of 40–50 kg live weight. These figures were used to calculate the energy value of each mixed feed according to the eight different systems. Finally, the different energy systems were compared by linear regression calculation. It was found that the different energy systems (except for both forms of the Energiezahl Schwein system) correlate highly when applied to mixed pig-feeds, and that the residual standard deviations are small (between 0.09 and 1.83%).These findings are important in the context of the efforts of the EEC Commission to find a commonly acceptable energy index for mixed pig-feeds. Although the physiological bases are totally different, most energy systems classify the various mixed feeds in exactly the same order. This means that the energy value according to one system can easily be calculated, with reasonable accuracy (small r.s.d.), from figures calculated according to a second system.  相似文献

In experiments based on ruminants’ individual dry matter intake (DMI) assessment, several external markers can be used to estimate faecal output when total faeces collection is not possible. However, preparation of the markers to be administered and analytical procedures used for marker content determination are time-consuming thus strongly limiting the number of animals involved in the experiments. In this paper, polyethylene glycol (PEG, molecular weight 6000 da) was tested as a faecal marker. Four trials were conducted on dry, non-lactating ewes kept in digestibility crates that allowed individual measurements. The overall experiment was designed to assess the major factors that could lessen the effectiveness of this method, assuming that the use of grab samples of faeces is sufficient. Trial 1 was designed to test two levels of PEG (20 and 40 g/day) administered in two equal amounts. Trial 2 was designed to test the effect of either a single morning (0800 h) dose (20 g/day) or a twice daily administration (0800 and 1600 h) of the same fractionated dose. Trial 3 was designed to test a 20 g/day dose of PEG administered once daily to ewes fed with hays of different qualities: medium (MH) and low (LH). In trial 4, a lower dose of PEG (10 g/day) was administered once a day to ewes fed with fresh oat–vetch forage. It was demonstrated that PEG could be precisely estimated (average prediction error = 3.47 g/kg) with near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). On the basis of the four trials, it has been proved that PEG administration (20 and 40 g/day) did not significantly affect the DMI of ewes fed dry diets (trials 1, 2 and 3), whereas there was an unexpected increase of DMI for ewes fed exclusively with green feed (trial 4) without DM digestibility modification. Providing PEG as a single dose (0800 h) or split into two equal parts (0800 and 1600 h) did not alter the estimated DMI. Considering the interest of grab sampling, there were clear variations of PEG in faeces with higher concentrations observed at 0800 and 1600 h and lower concentrations at 1400 h. Consequently, with PEG (measured with NIRS) administered once and using the grab sampling procedure (morning collection), it is possible to estimate the DMI of dry feeds with good accuracy. For green feeds, more research is needed as the estimated results are still highly variable.  相似文献

Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent and important gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) in small ruminants. Since it reduces the packed cell volume (PCV), causing anemia, early diagnosis can be used for targeted selective treatment (TST) of sheep, reducing antiparasitic drug use and anthelmintic resistance. This study aimed to predict PCV values through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and to develop a classification and diagnosis model of H. contortus infection using PCV values, eggs per gram of feces (EPG) counts and mean daily weight gain (DWG). A total of 1728 spectra were collected from blood samples of 216 lambs with a portable NIR spectroscope. In parallel, other parameters indicative of infection were measured: PCV by hematocrit, FAffa MAlan CHArt (FAMACHA) scores, EPG and DWG. To evaluate the relationship between NIRS spectra and the evaluated parameters, principal component analysis (PCA) was used for an exploratory analysis, regression by the partial least squares method (PLS) for the prediction of PCV values via NIRS, and PCA linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA) as a classification model for diagnosis. The absorption peaks in the NIRS region associated with the excitation of overtones of nitrogen-hydrogen (N-H) functional groups of proteins had a strong impact on the principal components (PCs), indicating that blood proteins, especially hemoglobin, can be estimated by the NIRS technique. The model for predicting PCV by PLS presented a standard error of prediction of 2.53, root-mean-square error of 2.48, and coefficient of determination of 0.84, indicating good correlation between the PCV values predicted by the model and the PCV obtained by hematocrit. The PCA-LDA model presented 93.33% sensitivity and 82.18% accuracy, both higher than those of the FAMACHA method, as was expected for resilient Morada Nova lambs. The multivariate models associated with the NIRS technique reported here can be used in the future as a quick and versatile tool for H. contortus infection diagnosis and TST application in lambs.  相似文献

Lowering dietary protein concentration is known to decrease urinary nitrogen (N) losses and increase milk N efficiency in dairy cows, but it may negatively affect animal productivity. Plant-derived essential oils (EO) may alleviate these negative effects by improving the efficiency of rumen fermentation in cows fed reduced feed protein diets. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of lowering crude protein (CP) supply alone or in a combination with an EO product on feed intake, milk production and composition, rumen fermentation, total tract digestibility and N utilization in dairy cows. Twenty-one Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design experiment. Each period consisted of 14 days for adaptation and 14 days for data collection and sampling. Cows were randomly assigned to one of three experimental diets: a 165 g/kg CP diet (control), a 155 g/kg CP diet (LCP) and LCP supplemented with 35 g/day per cow EO (LCPEO). The dry matter (DM) intake was decreased by LCP and LCPEO compared with the control; there was no effect of EO on DM intake. Milk yield and composition and feed efficiency were similar among treatments. Ruminal pH, lactate, ammonia and volatile fatty acids concentrations were not affected by treatment, except increased valerate concentration by LCPEO compared with LCP. The supplementation of EO tended to decrease protozoal counts. The LCP and LCPEO increased total tract digestibility of DM and organic matter and decreased CP digestibility compared with the control. Supplementation with EO did not affect total tract digestibility of dietary nutrients compared with the control or LCP. The LCP and LCPEO decreased urinary and fecal N excretions and increased milk N efficiency; nitrogen losses were not affected by EO. In this study, lowering dietary CP by 10 g/kg decreased urinary and fecal N excretion without affecting productivity. The supplementation of EO to LCP had only minor effects on rumen fermentation and did not affect productivity, digestibility and N excretion in lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

There are limited data on the diet dry matter digestibility (DMD) of captive African elephants. Although the total fecal collection method is the standard for determining DMD, it is labor‐intensive, time‐consuming, and expensive. The acid‐insoluble ash (AIA) marker technique has been used successfully to determine DMD in ruminants and monogastrics. The objective of this study was to assess how accurately the AIA marker technique could estimate the DMD of captive African elephants (Loxodonta africana). Three mature male African elephants at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida were used in this study. The animals were offered a Bermuda grass hay‐based ration, and the total dry matter intake (DMI) and total fecal output were measured daily over a 7‐day period to determine the total collection DMD. The feed ingredients and fecal samples were also analyzed for AIA. Although there were differences (P<0.05) in total DMI and total fecal outputs, the DMD values did not (P>0.05) differ (35.1±0.72 vs. 37.1±0.72 for total collection and AIA, respectively). There was a linear (y=0.9461x; R2=0.74) relationship between the total collection and AIA marker technique DMD values. These results suggest that AIA can be used to accurately estimate the DMD of captive African elephants. Zoo Biol 0:1–5, 2005. © 2005 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献
