Hand-weeding experiments were conducted over a three-year period in field-grown crops of swedes in north-east Scotland. When weeds were left to grow all season they reduced the dry matter yield of swede roots by 62% in 1980 and 79% in 1981 but by only 42% in the dry year 1982, in comparison with a weed-free crop. In all three years there was at least one time when a single removal of all weeds was sufficient to prevent yield loss by weed competition. In 1980 this was 6 wk after crop sowing, but the intervals between weed removal times were too great to reveal how critical this timing was. With shorter intervals in 1981 the timing of a single removal of weeds to achieve maximum crop yield was found to be highly critical at 6 wk after sowing, but in 1982 when weed biomass was much lower a single weeding any time from 4–7 wk after sowing gave as high a yield as a crop kept weed-free all season. Earlier weeding allowed subsequently emerging weeds to become competitive and reduce crop yield, while delaying weeding until after the optimum time allowed early competition from weeds emerging with the crop to depress final yield. In all years if weed removal was delayed until 12 wk after sowing, the crop yield was only slightly or no higher than if weeds were left to grow all season. It is concluded that swedes, unlike red beet or sugar beet, are incapable of recovery from the severe restriction to growth caused by weeds competing with the crop from 6–12 wk after sowing.  相似文献

The potential benefit to be derived from seed inoculation of Phaseolus vulgaris beans with effective strains of Rhizobium phaseoli, was investigated in field experiments over three years on a site low in soil nitrogen and lacking indigenous effective strains of R. phaseoli. Inoculation with R. phaseoli (strain RCR 3644) produced significant increases in nodulation, nitrogenase activity and plant growth in all experiments. In trials in 1978 and 1979, with cv. Seafarer, inoculation, in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser doubled seed yields. In 1978, the seed yields from inoculated beans without nitrogen fertiliser (1–6 t/ha) were not significantly different from those obtained with uninoculated beans receiving the optimum nitrogen fertiliser treatment of 120 kg N/ha (1–75 t/ha). In 1979, with lower rainfall favouring more efficient utilisation of nitrogen fertiliser, inoculation gave seed yields (1–88 t/ha) equivalent to those obtained with 60 kg N/ha (1–70 t/ha) but significantly less than with 120 kg N/ha (2–88 t/ha). More precise estimates from nitrogen response curves showed that inoculation supplied the fertiliser equivalent of 105 and 70 kg N/ha in 1978 and 1979 respectively. In both years, significant benefits were also obtained by the combination of inoculation and nitrogen fertiliser. In a separate experiment in 1979, with four R. phaseoli strains inoculated onto eight bean cultivars, three were highly effective nitrogen fixers on all cultivars. Two strains (RCR 3644 and NVRS 963A) each increased mean yields, in the absence of nitrogen fertiliser, from 1–39 t/ha uninoculated to c. 2–5 t/ha inoculated whilst strain RCR 3622 was outstanding with a mean yield of 3-0 t/ha. An analysis of the nitrogen content of seed showed that gains from nitrogen fixation were 37–57 kg N/ha/growing cycle for the combination RCR 3644 with cv. Seafarer. However, 106 kg N/ha/growing cycle was recorded for the combination RCR 3622 and cv. Aurora.  相似文献

The relationship between time of inoculation with cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) and the growth, seed production and rate of seed transmission of virus in lupin (Lupinus angustifolius cv. Illyarrie) was studied in field-grown plants. Plants inoculated at the seedling stage (2 days post-emergence) showed 45% mortality. Plants infected through the seed were more stunted than plants inoculated at the seedling stage. Plants inoculated up to the mid-vegetative growth stage (58 days post-emergence) yielded ≤ 27% of the dry matter and ≤ 9% of the seed of healthy plants. Late inoculation (114 days post-emergence) did not affect dry matter yield, but reduced seed yield to 75% of that of healthy plants. Rate of seed transmission depended on the time of inoculation of plants. The maximum rate was 24.5% for plants that were inoculated at the mid-vegetative growth stage (58 days post-emergence). However, early inoculation caused a large reduction in seed yield, and it was shown that plants inoculated at the beginning of flowering (94 days post-emergence) produced greater numbers of infected progeny than plants inoculated at earlier or later times. No relationship was observed between seed weight and transmission of CMV. Infectious CMV was recovered from the embryo, but not from the testa. A simple seed transmission model was used to evaluate several hypothetical epidemics and to determine the time of inoculation which results in greatest rates of seed transmission of CMV. For example, when fewer than 73% of plants in a crop become infected with CMV, then the rate of transmission of virus in crop seeds will be greatest when inoculations are at the beginning of flowering.  相似文献

In field experiments on a sandy loam at Wellesbourne, England in 1972 and on a silt loam at Agassiz, British Columbia in 1973, combinations of herbicides and insecticides were applied at sowing to determine their effects on weeds and invertebrate populations and on the growth and yield of cauliflowers grown at high density There was good agreement between the results from the two locations. The two combinations of herbicides, 0.6 kg trifluralin/ha incorporated pre-drilling plus 2.2 kg propachlor/ha pre-emergence and 2.2 kg nitrofen/ha plus 2.2 kg propachlor/ha both applied pre-emergence, gave good weed control, their relative effectiveness depending on the species composition of the weed population. The insecticides isophenphos, carbofuran, chlorfenvinphos and fensulfothion were applied as bow-wave treatments. None of them, whether in combination with herbicides or not, adversely affected crop stand or yield. Yield was reduced when either weeds or root-fly maggots (Hylemya brassicae (Bouché)) were not controlled. Only in one experiment was there any evidence of any herbicide-insecticide interactions. Where trifluralin and carbofuran were applied together at Agassiz, the control of both weeds and maggots was less than that with the other combinations. None of the treatments affected the populations of predatory beetles, but the numbers of earthworms were greatly reduced by carbofuran and to a lesser extent by chlorfenvinphos. Except for carbofuran in one experiment, the treatments had no effects on the numbers of aphids, lepidopterous larvae or leaf miners present at harvest.  相似文献

The control of Aphis fabae Scop, on spring-sown field beans (Vicia faba L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Disulfoton or phorate granules or demeton-S-methyl, menazon and vamidothion sprays, applied once in early June as preventive treatments before heavy aphid colonies developed, gave good control of Aphis fabae Scop, on field beans. Phosalone gave relatively poor results and DDT was ineffective. Applications in June to crops sown in February and early March were made with minimal wheel damage to the crop and are known to be less harmful to bees than sprays at flowering time. Eradicant treatments with demeton-S-methyl and dimethoate sprays or with disulfoton or phorate granules on heavily infested plants during flowering were also effective, but menazon was less satisfactory. These eradicant sprays are likely to be harmful to bees, and wheel damage in late June reduced yield by 1–2 cwt/acre (125–250 kg/ha). Peak populations of 3000 aphids/plant in early July reduced yield by 6 cwt/acre (750 kg/ha) in one trial.  相似文献

Multispecies cropping systems contribute to sustainable agriculture with multiple ecosystem services. Effects of intercropping of various crops with faba beans on growth and yield parameters and disease severity of root rot, damping off and broomrape were investigated. This study was implemented in the laboratory, greenhouse and field to investigate the effect of the intercropping systems (fenugreek + faba bean, lupine + faba bean, garlic + faba bean and sole faba bean). The intercropping systems were combined with the application of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) and yeast as bio-control agents, compared to chemical application of herbicides (Glyphosate) and fungicides (Rizolex-T50), to control rot root diseases and broomrape weeds, Orobanche spp., of faba bean plants in vivo and under the naturally infested field. In vitro, yeast and Rizolex-T50 significantly inhibited mycelial growth of root pathogenic fungi. Intercropping with garlic and/or application of Rizolex-T, significantly decreased the incidence and disease index of root rot and damping-off diseases, meanwhile increased percentage of survival plants. In vivo, intercropping with fenugreek and/or application of Glyphosate, significantly reduced the number/weight of spikes/plot of broomrapes. Intercropping with fenugreek combined with AMF application promoted crop growth and significantly increased yield components. The AMF enhanced seed yield/ha when applied to the intercropping of faba bean + fenugreek and faba bean + garlic, showing the highest seed yield/ha with 3.722 and 3.568 ton/ha, respectively. Intercropping of faba bean with garlic integrated with AMF revealed the highest values of LER, 2.45, and net return, 2341 US$/ha. Our results suggested that using faba bean–garlic intercrop along with AMF inoculation can reduce root rot disease, damping off and broomrapes, as well as enhance the profitability of Egyptian farmer and sustainable production.  相似文献

In eastern Scotland seed-borne infection with broad bean stain virus (BBSV) and/or Echtes Ackerbohnenmosaik-Virus (EAMV) was detected in five of 39 seed lots of field bean in 1975 and in four of 21 commercial crops of field bean or broad bean sampled in 1975 or 1976. Tests failed to detect the main weevil vector of these viruses, Apion vorax, in 1975 and 1976 but Sitona weevils were found in most crops and were numerous in many, reaching maximum numbers in August. No spread of BBSV and EAMV was detected in commercial crops containing seed-borne infection. In experimental field bean crops containing plants manually inoculated with virus, no virus spread was detected in 1975, and only 0–015% uninoculated plants became infected with EAMV in 1976. Sitona, therefore, was an inefficient vector. The percentage of virus infection in seed harvested from field bean plants manually inoculated 3, 5, 7 and 11 wk after emergence in the field was 1–5, 2–7, 0–4 and 0–06 for BBSV and 0–5, 2-1, 0–6 and 0 for EAMV respectively. Seed harvested from unrogued and rogued plots of field bean grown from seed containing 3–4% seed-borne infection produced 0–05% and no infected plants, respectively. Yield losses in field bean plants manually inoculated with virus before flowering were up to 20% but were much greater in plants infected through the seed. Loss in yield was largely caused by a decrease in number of seeds per pod. The absence of A. vorax, the late arrival of Sitona weevils in the crop and their inefficiency as vectors, and the smaller effects of BBSV and EAMV on crop yield than in southern England appear to make eastern Scotland very suitable for the production of bean seed free from BBSV and EAMV.  相似文献

Protectants (antidotes) were tested for their potential to protect field beans (Vicia faba L.) from EPTC damage, or wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) from triallate damage. For both crops there was considerable variation in the degree of protection shown from similar treatments in different experiments. For field bean, a seed treatment of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA) at 5 mg/g seed gave some protection from EPTC applied pre-planting at 4–8 kg a.i./ha but not in all experiments. NA also caused marked chlorosis of the foliage. N, N-diallyl-2, 2-dichloroacetamide (R25788) at 20 mg/g seed severely damaged field bean in the absence of herbicide but 5 mg/g gave comparable protection from EPTC to that given by NA and did not cause chlorosis. Mixing R25788 with EPTC in the spray tank gave reduced protection. In a single experiment R4115 (chemistry undisclosed) gave some protection against EPTC damage. For wheat, a seed treatment of 5–20 mg/g NA sometimes countered damage from tri-allate applied pre-planting at 1 kg a.i./ha but not generally from higher doses. R25788 sometimes protected from weight loss due to tri-allate at 1 kg a.i./ha but not from damage symptoms, whereas R4115 at 20 mg/g seed alleviated these symptoms but did not prevent weight loss. R25788 at 4 kg a.i./ha mixed in the spray tank with the herbicide partially reduced weight loss and damage symptoms from a dose of 2 kg a.i./ha. Some treatments of R29148 gave complete protection from tri-allate at 1 kg a.i./ha. The results are discussed in the context of the full data from the two series of experiments.  相似文献

The yield of wheat and the incidence of take-all were measured in crops grown in six different 4-year sequences, repeated in 3 successive years. The first crop of winter wheat grown after oats or beans yielded 13–23 cwt/acre (1632–2887 kg/ha) more grain than wheat after wheat or barley. Spring wheat after oats yielded 2–5 cwt/acre (250–625 kg/ha) more than spring wheat after wheat. The smaller yields of wheat after wheat or barley were caused mostly by greater prevalence of take-all. Regression analysis indicates that each 1 % increase in straws with take-all decreased yield of winter wheat by 0·6%. Take-all was more prevalent in the second and third successive wheat crops after oats than in the fourth crop.  相似文献

Treatments reported to affect the incidence of ‘coiled sprout’ were studied in 1968 with the cultivar Arran Pilot in experiments near Falmouth, Cornwall (F), Rothamsted (R) and near Edinburgh (E). Most coiled stems occurred at E (37%) with similar proportions at R (19%) and F (16%). Seed tubers with the longest sprouts at planting produced most coils at all sites, those with shorter sprouts less and unsprouted seed least. When coiling was assessed on the number of plants, long- and short-sprouted seed tubers were about equally affected at R and E. Sprouts emerged within 45 days at E and 30 days at R. Longer sprouts did not emerge more quickly, but emergence was more than 1 wk later from unsprouted seed at R and only a few days later at E. Harrowing ridges after planting to decrease the depth of soil covering seed tubers hastened emergence by about 1 wk at R and decreased the incidence of coiling; it had little effect at E but tended to increase coiling at F. Seed tubers inoculated with Verticillium nubilum produced more coiled sprouts but this increase was not significant. The highest final yields were achieved at R (43-2 t/ha) where short-sprouted seed outyielded long-sprouted and unsprouted seed, but cultivation treatments and fungus inoculation had no effect. At E (21-2 t/ha) only herbicide treated plots gave a significant effect, outyielding harrowed plots by 8 t/ha. At F (18-2 t/ha) short-sprouted seed outyielded long-sprouted and unsprouted seed, and herbicide treated plots outyielded harrowed plots. When ware yields from individual plants with and without coils from long-sprouted seed were compared at R on 18 June, coiled plants gave about 30% and on 2 July 60% of the yield of non-coiled, but by 16 July 120% yield (20% more); similar trends were shown by short- and by long-sprouted seed at E.  相似文献

In soil inoculated with Pythium ultimum or Pythium irregulare, seed treatment with either Apron 70 (=1 g metalaxyl and 1 g captan/kg seed) or thiram gave control of pre-emergence damping-off of Brussels sprout and cabbage seedlings. On cauliflower, Apron 70 was significantly more effective than thiram. No post-emergence damping-off occurred in either of these crops or in oil-seed rape following seed treatment with Apron 70 whilst post-emergence losses from untreated seed ranged from 10·2–19·4% and from thiram treated seed from 5·7-7·4%. Apron 70 gave complete control of Peronospora parasitica on cauliflower inoculated 10 days after sowing; thiram was ineffective. Following seed treatment with Apron 70, metalaxyl was detected in the cotyledons, true leaves and roots of cabbage seedlings up to 4 wk from sowing.  相似文献

A field experiment with groundnut as test crop was conducted to evaluate the manurial potential of three distillery effluents: raw spent wash (RSW), biomethanated spent wash (BSW) and lagoon sludge (LS) vis-à-vis recommended fertilizers (NPK + farm yard manure (FYM)) and a control (no fertilizer or distillery effluent). It was found that all the three distillery effluents increased total chlorophyll content, crop growth rate (CGR), total dry matter, nutrient uptake (N, P and K) and finally seed yield compared to the control but inhibited nodulation and decreased nitrogen fixation. Among the three distillery effluents, BSW produced the highest seed yield (619 kg ha(-1)) twice that of control (3.10 kg ha(-1)), followed by RSW (557 kg ha(-1)) and LS (472 kg ha(-1)). However, the distillery effluents did not influence protein and oil contents. It was concluded that these distillery effluents because of their high manurial potential could supply nutrients, particularly potassium, nitrogen and sulphur, to the crops and thus reduce the fertilizer requirement of crops. Nevertheless, the crop performance and yield with three distillery effluents were overall less than that produced by recommended NPK + FYM probably on account of failure of the effluents to supply balanced nutrition to the plants for achieving their potential growth capacity.  相似文献

Seed tubers with severe (71% cover) or slight (12% cover) common scab selected from a badly infected crop of cv. Maris Piper were boxed for sprouting in November and February and planted in field experiments at Woburn and Rothamsted in 1980. The severely scabbed seed lost more moisture than the slightly scabbed seed during sprouting and sprouted from a larger number of eyes but total stem numbers were greater on plants from the slightly scabbed seed. Plant growth during the first 6–9 wk after planting was less from the severely scabbed than from the slightly scabbed seed. This was shown by records of ground cover, leaf area index, fresh weights of stems and leaves, total tuber yield (18% lower at 9 wk) and tuber number. Subsequently these differences became non-significant. Seed with slight scab boxed in November produced smaller numbers of progeny tubers than that boxed in February but there were no other consistent effects of boxing date on growth and yield. Scab incidence on progeny tubers was very slight and unrelated to the severity of disease on the seed tubers. It seems unlikely that severe scab infection of seed tubers would significantly decrease tuber yields except perhaps in early potato production.  相似文献

Aphanomyces cochlioides attacking sugar-beet seedlings was controlled by fenaminosulf applied as seed treatment or to the seed furrow at sowing. In the absence of blackleg caused by A. cochlioides, fenaminosulf seed treatment at 0–75 % (of seed weight) and soil applications decreased seedling emergence, and soil applications of more than 2-2 kg a.i./ha significantly depressed sugar yield. Controlling moderate attacks of seedling blackleg caused by A. cochlioides did not increase yield. Dichlone, benomyl and maneb applied as seed or soil treatments, captafol seed treatment, and quintozene and thiram soil treatments did not control A. cochlioides.  相似文献

Stripe rust of winter bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) causes substantial grain yield loss in Central Asia. This study involved two replicated field experiments undertaken in 2009–2010 and 2010–2011 winter wheat crop seasons. The first experiment was conducted to determine grain yield reductions on susceptible winter wheat cultivars using single and two sprays of fungicide at Zadoks growth stages Z61–Z69 in two farmers’ fields in Tajikistan and one farmer's field in Uzbekistan. In the second experiment, four different fungicides at two concentrations were evaluated at Zadoks growth stage Z69. These included three products from BASF – Opus (0.5 l/ha and 1.0 l/ha), Platoon (0.5 l/ha and 1.0 l/ha) and Opera (0.75 l/ha and 1.5 l/ha) – and locally used fungicide Titul 390 (0.5 l/ha and 1.0 l/ha). One and two sprays of fungicides did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) in increasing grain yield. Stripe rust reduced grain yield and 1000‐kernel weight (TKW) from 24 to 39% and from 16 to 24%, respectively. The benefits from the two concentrations of the same fungicide did not consistently resulted in significantly higher grain yield, suggesting that the lower concentrations could be more cost effective. Our study provides important information about the selection of fungicides, spray concentrations and number of spray to control stripe rust and increase grain yield. The findings could play an important role in developing stripe rust management approaches such as fungicide rotation and strategic fungicide applications in Central Asian countries.  相似文献

Maize field weeds or agrestals are widely used in central Mexico as potherbs (quelites) and forage. This work presents quantitative data on these uses from the village of San Bartolo del Llano, Municipio de Ixtlahuaca, Valley of Toluca, an area with a relatively intensive, semicommercial agriculture. We interviewed 24 families of the village and 10 vendors at the market of Ixtlahuaca regularly during one rainy season (1995) on type and quantity of weed use. Also, the weed vegetation was surveyed and we interviewed 49 farmers on their farming practices and on costs. All of the 74 weed species found in maize fields were useful as forage, potherb, medicinal, or ornamental. Within the village, 11 species were eaten; an average family consumed 4.5 kg of wild potherbs per month during the rainy season. In Ixtlahuaca, 2150 kg of 10 species were sold, worth 3054 pesos (US $611). For quantity and gross economic value, forage was much more important. On the average, 1 ha of maize field produced a harvest of 1.5 t of green forage, worth about 25% of the gross value of the maize harvest, and 55% of its net value. The combination of maize with forage weeds for stabled animals constitutes an interesting integrated farming system. The weeds increase the useful biomass of the field, improve nutrition of the farmers, do not reduce the yield of the main crop, as the fields are kept weed free during the critical period, and provide erosion control, shade, and green manure.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted during wet season to evaluate the performance of different fish species for biocontrol of weeds in rainfed waterlogged rice fields with fingerlings of three exotic carps – grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), silver barb, Puntius gonionotus (Bleeker) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) and common carp, Cyprinus carpio (L.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) – and three Indian major carps – rohu, Labeo rohita (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), catla, Catla catla (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes), mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.) (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes). A total of 13 major weeds under the categories of grassy, sedges, broadleaf and aquatic weeds were observed in the rice fields. Grass carp reduced maximum weed biomass (weed control efficiency [WCE] 63% at 60 days after transplanting [DAT] and 62% at 100 DAT) followed by silver barb and common carp. Among the Indian carps, only rohu was effective in control of weeds (WCE, 23% at 60 DAT). The grain yield of rice (variety Varshadhan) slightly increased (4.2–4.5 t/ha), but straw yield was significantly higher (10.2–10.7 t/ha) under rice-fish farming. Fish yield was significantly higher in exotic carps (270–288 kg/ha/90days) due to higher specific growth rates (1.8–2% body weight/day). The study indicated that exotic carps (grass carp, silver barb and common carp in order) were more effective than Indian carps for control of weed in rainfed lowland rice fields and among the Indian carps, rohu showed potential for weed control.  相似文献

From 1978 - 1985, 14 trials were conducted, mainly in Northern England, to assess the efficacy of different insecticides, formulations and application times for the control of frit fly (Oscinella frit) on winter cereals (13 on winter wheat and one on winter barley). Treatments were compared by assessing shoot damage in December-January, numbers of healthy tillers in April and harvested yield. A chlorpyrifos spray to the grass before ploughing or at crop emergence gave the most consistently good results, significantly reducing damage and increasing yield by 0·61 and 0·31 t/ha respectively when taken over all trials. Sprays or granules of other insecticides applied from before drilling to 8 wk after emergence gave variable but sometimes good control and enhanced yield. Chlorpyrifos applied from crop emergence to 8 wk after emergence was generally more effective than other insecticides. Cypermethrin at emergence or 2wk later gave promising results in the two trials where it was used. Of the seed treatments fonofos was the most effective though it did not match the spray treatments. In additional trials, where insecticides were applied after damage occurred, sprays of chlorpyrifos and pirimphos-methyl reduced damage and increased yield.  相似文献

Potato virus Y reduction by straw mulch in organic potatoes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Potato virus Y (PVY) is transmitted non-persistently by winged morphs of many aphid species and is a major problem in seed potato production. In order to evaluate the potential of straw mulch applications (4–5 t ha−1) and presprouting on PVY reduction, small scale organically managed field experiments were carried out in Northern Hessen, Germany, over 3 yr. In all years mulching significantly reduced aphid infestation on leaves as well as PVY incidence in tubers. For the effect of presprouting the temporal coincidence of two factors was crucial – crop emergence and aphid flight activity. Presprouting decreased PVY incidence when in the phase of early crop emergence aphid spring flight activity was low, but increased it, although not significantly, when prominent aphid flight peaks occurred in this critical period. Straw mulch was most effective when vector pressure was concentrated early in the year acting as a PVY protectant for young plants. In later growth stages its effect declined gradually with increasing ground coverage of the crop. Combined mulching and presprouting had a synergistic, complementary effect on reduction of PVY incidence. In an on-farm experiment in 2001 scaling up the area mulched stepwise from 100 m2 to 900 m2 consistently kept aphid infestation at reduced levels.  相似文献

Mixed infections with two or three viruses - bean leaf roll (BLRV), pea early-browning (PEBV) and pea enation mosaic (PEMV) - were detected in plants showing leaf curling, stunting and necrosis in a crop of field beans grown for seed in 1980. In glasshouse tests, field bean plants infected with any one of these viruses showed no necrosis, and plants infected with PEBV and PEMV together showed symptoms of PEMV only. However, mixed infection with BLRV and PEMV almost invariably induced severe stunting and leaf necrosis, and infection with BLRV and PEBV often induced both leaf and stem necrosis and sometimes caused early death. Thus it seems that the necrotic symptoms seen in the field were induced by interactions between BLRV and the other viruses. No transmission of PEBV was detected through seed harvested from the crop, but up to 5% transmission was detected through seed from experimentally-infected plants. The infected seedlings were symptomless.  相似文献
