Male hamsters castrated on the day of birth (Day 1) and female hamsters were treated with the free form of testosterone (100 μg/day) on Days 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, or 9 and 10 postnatally. Following androgen treatment in adulthood, animals treated on Days 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 showed significantly higher mounting and intromission frequencies than animals treated later in life. Sexual receptivity measures following ovarian hormone treatment showed no differences among the male groups, whereas females treated on Days 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 were significantly lower in sexual receptivity measures than females in other treatment groups. Histology of the adult ovaries indicated no modification of normal function in any treatment group. In a subsequent experiment, Day 1 castrated male and intact female hamsters were treated with the free form of testosterone on Days 1–5 (40 or 100 μg/day), 6–10 (40 or 100 μg/day), or Days 1–10 (50 μg/day). Masculine behavior measures were significantly higher in males treated Days 1–10 than in other groups. Among the females, masculine behavior was highest in those treated Days 1–5 postnatally. Sexual receptivity in both males and females was significantly depressed by testosterone treatment Days 1–10 postnatally. Ovarian histology also revealed alterations in gonadal function in females treated Days 1–5 and 1–10 postnatally. Compared with previously published findings, these data suggest that testosterone can be as effective in inducing behavioral masculinization and defeminization as testosterone propionate, provided that treatment extends over a prolonged period during early postnatal development.  相似文献

The objectives of this work were to determine whether or not plasma levels of testosterone and estradiol reflect the various grades of sex reversal in genetic female chickens treated with Fadrozole (CGS 16949 A), a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor, and whether gonadal aromatase activity and plasma levels of testosterone and estradiol in treated females can or not be modified by post-hatch treatments with Fadrozole or Fadrozole + testosterone. Eggs were injected with 1 mg Fadrozole on day 4 of incubation. In females having developed sex-reversed gonads, endocrine parameters (estradiol and testosterone) at and after 13 weeks of age were indicative of the degree of sex reversal, with, for example, sex-reversed females with two testes having the highest levels of testosterone and the lowest levels of estradiol. Among these females, eight (from a total of 13) produced ejaculates with scarce and abnormal spermatozoa. Some motility was observable in the ejaculates from five of them. None of the post-hatch treatments had a significant effect on plasma levels of testosterone or estradiol (measured at 3-week intervals from week 4 to week 28 post-hatch) or on gonadal aromatase activity (measured at 12 and 28 weeks). In conclusion, these results indicate that plasma levels of testosterone and estradiol at and after 13 weeks of age are valuable indicators of the degree of sex reversal in female chickens treated with Fadrozole prior to gonadal sex differentiation. In pre-cited conditions, post-natal treatments with either Fadrozole or Fadrozole + testosterone had no apparent effect on the degree of sex reversal in these birds. Finally, the occurrence of ejaculates with motile although scarce and abnormal spermatozoa, revealed that epididymes and ducti deferens can develop and become functional in sex-reversed female chickens.  相似文献

Testosterone promotes aggressive behaviour in male vertebrates during the breeding season, but the importance of testosterone in female aggression remains unclear. Testosterone has both beneficial and detrimental effects on behaviour and physiology, prompting the hypothesis that selection favours an association between aggression and testosterone only in certain contexts in which intense or persistent aggression may be beneficial. We tested this hypothesis in a year-round territorial female buff-breasted wrens (Thryothorus leucotis), by exposing free-living females to experimental intrusions in different social (either single female or male, or paired decoys) and seasonal (pre-breeding or breeding) contexts. Females responded more aggressively to intrusions by females and pairs than to males. However, female intrusions elicited stronger responses during pre-breeding, whereas responses to pair intrusions were more intense during breeding. Territorial females had elevated testosterone levels after female intrusions and intermediate levels after pair intrusions during pre-breeding, but the levels of testosterone remained low after these intrusions during breeding. These results demonstrate seasonal differences in circulating testosterone following territorial aggression in female buff-breasted wrens and are suggestive of differences according to social context as well. Context-dependent elevation of testosterone implies that selection acts directly on female vertebrates to shape patterns of testosterone secretion.  相似文献

Testosterone is assumed to be the key hormone related to resource-defence aggression. While this role has been confirmed mostly in the context of reproduction in male vertebrates, the effect of testosterone on the expression of resource-defence aggression in female vertebrates is not so well established. Furthermore, laboratory work suggests that progesterone inhibits aggressive behaviour in females. In this study, we investigated the hormonal changes underlying territorial aggression in free-living female African black coucals, Centropus grillii (Aves; Cuculidae). Females of this sex-role reversed polyandrous bird species should be particularly prone to be affected by testosterone because they aggressively defend territories similar to males of other species. We show, however, that territorial aggression in female black coucals is modulated by progesterone. After aggressive territorial challenges female black coucals expressed lower levels of progesterone than unchallenged territorial females and females without territories, suggesting that progesterone may suppress territorial aggression and is downregulated during aggressive encounters. Indeed, females treated with physiological concentrations of progesterone were less aggressive than females with placebo implants. This is one of the first demonstrations of a corresponding hormone-behaviour interaction under challenged and experimental conditions in free-living females. We anticipate that our observation in a sex-role reversed species may provide a more general mechanism, by which progesterone--in interaction with testosterone--may regulate resource-defence aggression in female vertebrates.  相似文献

A balanced polymorphism in male mating behaviour exists in male ruffs, with no obvious parallel expression in females. Pedigree data of male phenotypes support an autosomal model of inheritance, in contrast to sex-linked inheritance patterns found in other taxa with sex-limited alternative mating strategy polymorphisms. We tested this model by inducing male courtship behaviour in gonad-intact female ruffs, using subcutaneous testosterone implants that produced physiological concentrations of testosterone. The implants rapidly induced in females both types of male mating behaviour, an increase in body mass typical of pre-breeding males, and the growth of normally male-limited breeding plumage. As predicted under an autosomal model, the distributions of induced male behaviour types in females paralleled those of their brothers and half-brothers, and were inconsistent with sex-linked models. Effects were reversible, and experimental females bred normally in subsequent years. Our results show that genotype-specific male characteristics can be induced by testosterone in female adults that have presumably not undergone neural organization for them early in life, showing direct use of genetic information in intra- and intersexual differentiation.  相似文献

Testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) have been quantitated by means of radioimmunoassay in Müllerian ducts (CM) from control quail embryos (6 to 8-day male and 6 to 15-day female) and from female embryos injected with 50 nanograms of testosterone propionate (PT) on the 8th day. These hormones are demonstrable in undifferentiated CM from 6-day control embryos. In control males although a highly significant decrease of the CM weight occurs during the CM involution, the detected amounts of androgens remain at a constant level. In control females, the right CM shows a slight increase of the androgen content during the rudimentation, i.e. from day 8 on; in the left CM: the highest steroid levels are found on the 6th day; while the CM differentiate, concentrations decrease and become similar to those found in neutral tissues. Given testosterone propionate on day 8 female embryos: right CM: both testosterone and DHT levels highly increase until day 14; the CM of treated embryos contain 8 times as much steroid as control; left CM: testosterone and DHT increase after injection until day 9,5; they slightly decrease between days 9,5 and 12, and then remain constant on day 14. Differences in concentrations are highly significant between CM of control and of PT - injected embryos. It seems that the binding sites of these androgens are more numerous during the involution and that bound testosterone or DHT could take a part in CM regression in male embryos and right CM rudimentation in female embryos.  相似文献

In some species, females develop bright colouration to signal reproductive status and exhibit behavioural repertoires to incite male courtship and/or reduce male harassment and forced copulation. Sex steroids, including progesterone and testosterone, potentially mediate female reproductive colouration and reproductive behaviour. We measured associations among plasma profiles of testosterone and progesterone with variation in colour expression and reproductive behaviour, including unique courtship rejection behaviours, in female Lake Eyre dragon lizards, (Ctenophorus maculosus). At onset of breeding, progesterone and testosterone increased with vitellogenesis, coincident with colour intensification and sexual receptivity, indicated by acceptance of copulations. As steroid levels peaked around the inferred ovulation time, maximal colour development occurred and sexual receptivity declined. When females were gravid and exhibited maximal mate rejection behaviours, progesterone levels remained consistently high, while testosterone exhibited a discrete second peak. At oviposition, significant declines in plasma steroid levels, fading of colouration and a dramatic decrease in male rejection behaviours co-occurred. Our results indicate a generally concordant association among steroid levels, colouration, behaviour and reproductive events. However, the prolonged elevation in progesterone and a second peak of testosterone was unrelated to reproductive state or further colour change, possibly suggesting selection on females to retain high steroid levels for inducing rejection behaviours.  相似文献

This experiment examined the possibility that endogenous embryonic androgen contributes to sexual differentiation of behaviour in male or female quail (Coturnixcoturnixjaponica), and that it does so via aromatization (conversion to oestrogen). Eggs were injected on day 9 of incubation with oil or ATD (an aromatization inhibitor). As adults, males and females were exposed to short days, injected with testosterone propionate, tested for male-typical behaviour, then injected with oestradiol benzoate and tested for female-typical receptivity. ATD increased the level of male-typical copulatory behaviour in males. Male-typical behaviour in females was not affected, nor was female-typical behaviour in either sex. Thus normal male quail are actually slightly demasculinized by their own androgen during embryonic development, and this process is mediated by aromatization.  相似文献

In male and female rats the endogenous steroid and gonadotrophin secretion was inhibited by injecting high doses of chlormadinone acetate (CmAc) from day 14 to 24 of life, i. e. during the period of brain maturation. In adulthood the males treated prepubertally with CmAc exhibited reduced sexual activity and fertility, whereas the females did not differ from the controls. More complete sex hormone deficiency during brain maturation was achieved by castration on day 14 of life. Controls were castrated at normal puberty time (40--60 days). Both groups were then substituted with androgens or oestrogens. In the females castrated on day 14 no impairment of sexual behaviour was observed as compared to the later castrated controls. In contrast, the early castrated males showed delayed onset of mounting behaviour. At autopsy, the weights of their sex organs were found to be lower than in the controls despite equal testosterone replacement for several months. These findings speak in favour of a permanently diminished responsiveness to androgens in males having been exposed to more or less severe androgen deficiency during sex specific brain maturation. Hence, the maturation of a male hypothalamus as well as the differentiation appears to depend at least in part on the presence of androgens, whereas in females it runs without hormonal influence.  相似文献

This study demonstrated that the combined administration of estrogens and androgens activates the display of mounting by female hamsters. Forty-nine ovariectomized hamsters were injected daily with either estradiol benzoate (EB, N = 8); dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP, N = 7); testosterone propionate (TP, N = 6); androstenedione (AD, N = 9); EB plus DHTP (N = 10); or estrone plus DHTP (E1 + DHTP, N = 9). All androgens were administered at a dose of 1 mg per day for the first 24 days and at a dose of 2 mg per day for the last 14 days. The EB dose was 6 μg per day and the E1 dose was 100 μg per day. Females were tested for male behavior once a week starting on Day 10 of injections and for female behavior on Day 39.One hundred percent of EB + DHTP treated females; 67% of the E1 + DHTP treated females; 55% of the AD treated females; 33% of the TP treated females; 29% of the DHTP treated females; and none of the EB treated females mounted during at least one test. Only one of the E1 + DHTP treated females showed the intromission pattern; otherwise most females which mounted displayed the intromission pattern. The median number of days preceding the onset of mounting ranged from 21 to 31 days and did not differ among treatment groups.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to study the long-term behavioural effects of gonadal hormone injections into domestic ducklings. Ten male and four female ducklings were injected daily from their 4th day onwards: the males with testosterone propionate and the females with oestradiol benzoate. Five males were injected for 40 days, the other ducklings (5♀ + 4♂) for 80 days. Behavioural effects of these treatments were assessed when the birds were six months old. Social displays were strongly inhibited in the injected males as compared with control birds but no general significant effect was observed for the aggressive and sexual behaviour. The inhibition of social displays is consistent with the view that these behaviour patterns are regulated by the pituitary-gonadal axis and the different levels at which the functional inhibition could have occured are discussed. Far fewer social displays were performed by the males presented with injected females which, on the other hand, showed less sexual behaviour than the control females. This supports the idea that the female plays an important part in the social display of ducks.  相似文献

In many animal species, extra‐pair copulations (EPCs) are common and can increase fitness in both sexes. In males, EPCs can increase total reproductive output, whereas in females benefits of EPCs can be indirect through improving the genetic quality of their offspring. Males and females of many vertebrates show an increase in levels of the hormone testosterone (T) during the mating period. In males, T plays an important role in regulating mating behaviour including increasing their EPC rate. While much is known about the role of T in male mating behaviour, the role of T in female reproduction remains unclear. To study the influence of T on extra‐pair paternity rates in females in a field setting, we created three experimental groups of female blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus): treated with either T, flutamide (Flu; an androgen receptor blocker) or empty implants before egg laying. Subsequently, we scored the number of extra‐pair offspring (EPO) in their broods. We also assessed the attractiveness of females treated with either T or Flu to males in mate choice trials in the laboratory. The overall proportion of EPO was lower for the T‐implanted group compared with the control group, whereas Flu had no effect. Given that males did not show a preference for Flu‐ vs. T‐treated females in the mate choice trials, it appears less likely that the reduction in EPO in the T‐implanted females was due to a reduction in their attractiveness. T levels may have negatively influenced EPO rate by affecting female within‐pair and/or extra‐pair mating behaviour. Future behavioural studies should investigate how elevated T levels reduce the number of EPO.  相似文献

The renal sexual segment (RSS) of immature Northern and Diamondback Water Snakes and Red-Sided Garter Snakes exhibited varying responses to testosterone or 17beta-estradiol. In both male and female water snakes, kidney mass was not a reliable indicator of hormone treatment, whereas tubule diameter, epithelial height and number of sexual granules responded to hormone treatment. In male water snakes, either hormone initiated granule development by day 16; by day 23, only testosterone increased granule density. Female water snakes receiving either hormone exhibited a small number of granules by day 16; by day 23, granules increased only in Diamondback Water Snakes receiving testosterone. Hormones did not initiate RSS hypertrophy in female Red-Sided Garter Snakes. Tubule diameter and epithelial height of testosterone-treated males exhibited significant hypertrophy, while 17beta-estradiol initiated significant increases in tubule diameter. Garter snakes initiated sexual granule development in response to hormone treatment with males exhibiting a greater response than females and testosterone stimulating a greater response than 17beta-estradiol. Sex steroids appear to mimic sexual maturity in immature snakes initiating RSS development. Whereas the RSS of adult males respond to testosterone, our data suggest specific changes in the RSS of females during maturation effectively negates the effect of 17beta-estradiol evident in immature female RSS.  相似文献

The volume of the sexually dimorphic nucleus of the preoptic area (SDN-POA) of the rat brain is severalfold larger in males than in females. The volume of the SDN-POA can be influenced significantly by the hormonal milieu during the perinatal "critical period" of sexual differentiation of the brain. The purpose of the present study was to determine the onset of this period of sexual differentiation of the SDN-POA. Pregnant rats received no treatment or were injected subcutaneously with oil on day 17, 18, or 20, or testosterone (T;5 mg) on days 16-22 of gestation. On postnatal day 15, unilateral SDN-POA volumes from female offspring prenatally exposed to testosterone on day 16 or 17 were not different from values of control (untreated or oil-injected) offspring. Female offspring from mothers treated with testosterone on day 18, 19, or 20 of gestation showed a significant and similar increase in SDN-POA volume over values from control animals. SDN-POA volumes from female offspring exposed to testosterone on day 21 or 22, although larger than those of controls, were not different statistically. We conclude that with the specific paradigm used in this study SDN-POA development is insensitive prior to day 18 of gestation, the day on which the onset of the hormone-sensitive period occurs.  相似文献

Eight sexually experienced long-term ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys were given tests of sexual behavior following treatment with 19-hydroxytestosterone (19-OH-T, 1 mg/day for 13 days), and their performance was compared with that following treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB, 10 μg/day for 13 days). Each female was tested for 10 min with each of nine adult males. Blood samples were taken on the last day of treatment with EB, at the end of the intervening 3-month period of no treatment, and on the last day of treatment with 19-OH-T. Blood levels of testosterone and estradiol were quantified by radioimmunoassay. Mean rate of presenting at a distance (proceptive behavior) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) when they were treated with 19-OH-T, but the ratio of presents to male contacts (receptive behavior) was significantly higher (P <0.05) when they were treated with EB. All other components of female sexual behavior were the same. Males displayed fewer annoyance responses (rejecting jerk, P < 0.05) when the females were treated with 19-OH-T than when they were treated with EB. All other male responses occurred with the same frequencies under the two female treatment conditions. Injection of 19-OH-T and EB both resulted in plasma testosterone and estradiol levels higher than those found in the untreated condition. Testosterone levels did not differ under the two treatments (P > 0.05), but estradiol levels were higher under EB treatment than under 19-OH-T (P < 0.05). This study suggests that both testosterone and estradiol are essential for maximum sexual performance and that various components of sexual behavior may be differentially influenced by the ratio of testosterone to estradiol in plasma.  相似文献

In photoperiodic birds, endocrine responses to behavioural interactions between males and females may be involved in temporally "fine-tuning" the onset of reproduction to yearly variations in the environment. This study examined the endocrine and behavioural responses of male White-crowned sparrows ( Zonotrichia leucophrys ) to changes in the endocrine state of the female, as signalled by changes in her behaviour. Males on different photoperiodic regimes were paired with oestrogen-treated, sexually receptive females. Males exposed to gonadostimulatory long days mounted and copulated with oestrogen-treated females even before gonadal development was complete. These males had higher plasma levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone and maintained enlarged testes longer than control males paired with untreated, nonreceptive females. Males maintained on nonstimulatory short days also mounted oestrogen-treated females; however, testes of these males remained nonfunctional and their plasma levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone were basal. Thus, reproductive function of photostimulated males is profoundly affected by changes in the endocrine state and behaviour of the female. However, male sexual behaviours are expressed in response to visual and auditory stimuli from the female regardless of male hormonal condition or photoperiodic treatment.  相似文献

Experiments to determine the potential of androgen to inhibit estrogen-activated female sexual behavior in rats were conducted. Treatment with either testosterone propionate (0.8 or 1.6 mg/day) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (0.2, 0.4, or 0.8 mg/day) significantly reduced the incidence of lordosis in ovariectomized females receiving estradiol benzoate (1 microgram/day). A similar suppression of estrogen-activated lordosis by testosterone was observed in castrated male rats. Flutamide, an androgen-receptor blocker, prevented the inhibition of lordosis by testosterone in females, indicating that the interaction of testosterone or a metabolite with an androgen receptor may be an important feature of this inhibition. Furthermore, the ability of dihydrotestosterone to inhibit lordosis at lower doses than testosterone suggests that the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone may also be necessary. These experiments demonstrate the potential of testosterone to inhibit the occurrence of female sexual behavior in rats, in contrast to its established facilitative effect on this behavior.  相似文献

Adult female starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were injected with testosterone in order to determine the song structures they had in memory. Those females had been caught in the wild in different geographical areas and had different ages. This hormone treatment clearly stimulated singing behaviour of females in isolation and revealed their ability to sing quite complex songs. Both categories of songs observed in males (warbling and whistles) were demonstrated and large repertoires were observed. Although the testosterone treatment may have altered the female song system and induced male-like vocalizations, it is interesting that none of the species-typic elements of male starlings was produced by the experimental females. Large changes were found in both repertoire size and composition over a year, revealing a high plasticity, even in older birds. We also found evidence that even under testosterone treatment, females do not necessarily sing all the songs they may have in memory.  相似文献

The role of neonatal testosterone in the development of copulatory behavior was examined in an insectivore, the musk shrew (Suncus murinus). Female musk shrews were treated with testosterone propionate (TP) for the first 5 days of life and then tested in adulthood for either female or male-like copulatory behavior. Early TP had a masculinizing effect; neonatally treated animals mounted a stimulus female more frequently, and with shorter latencies, in response to adult testosterone treatment than did control females. Neonatally androgenized females also showed deficits in female sexual behavior; few received ejaculations from stud males. This difference was likely caused by increased aggression exhibited by the neonatally TP-treated females toward males. In turn, female aggression decreased efficiency of male partners' intromission attempts. Early TP treatments also caused structural abnormalities in the ovaries, but did not effect their capacity to ovulate in response to either gonadotropin-releasing hormone or human chorionic gonadotropin injection. In sum, exposure to TP during development augmented display of male-like behavior in females and had subtle deleterious effects on expression of feminine behavior.  相似文献

Multiple male traits and displays may act in signalling sexually selected processes during courtship. Spotless starling males (Sturnus unicolor) carry green plants into their nests before egg laying, and recent studies have shown that this behaviour is related to female breeding decisions and the production of male‐biased broods. Although the functional implications of this effect on females are not yet clear, data suggest that it could be mediated by female circulating hormones. Additionally, females may show higher androgen levels as a consequence of the increased female–female competition generated by the increase in male attractiveness. We tested this hypothesis using the same manipulation of green nesting material that has been previously shown to result in an increase of male attractiveness in male spotless starlings. We found that females in experimental nests increased their circulating testosterone levels during the laying period. In addition, there was an increase of social interferences in the experimental nests because of the addition of green plants. We hypothesise that testosterone may allow females to maintain their mating status when competing with other females for the preferred males. Addition of green plants also increased the variance in the levels of circulating testosterone, suggesting plasticity between females in their response to the manipulation. We propose that there is a functional link between high testosterone levels, male‐biased sex ratios and female resource‐holding potential in intra‐sexual competition in this species.  相似文献
