Spectral discrimination of coral reef benthic communities   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Effective identification and mapping of coral reef benthic communities using high-spatial and -spectral resolution digital imaging spectrometry requires that the different communities are distinguishable by their spectral reflectance characteristics. In Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, USA, we collected in situ a total of 247 spectral reflectances of three coral species (Montipora capitata, Porites compressa, Porites lobata), five algal species (Dictyosphaeria cavernosa, Gracilaria salicornia, Halimeda sp., Porolithon sp., Sargassum echinocarpum) and three sand benthic communities (fine-grained carbonate sand, sand mixed with coral rubble, coral rubble). Major reflectance features were identified by peaks in fourth derivative reflectance spectra of coral (at 573, 604, 652, 675 nm), algae (at 556, 601, 649 nm) and sand (at 416, 448, 585, 652, 696 nm). Stepwise wavelength selection and linear discriminant function analysis revealed that spectral separation of the communities is possible with as few as four non-contiguous wavebands. These linear discriminant functions were applied to an airborne hyperspectral image of a patch reef in Kaneohe Bay. The results demonstrate the ability of spectral reflectance characteristics, determined in situ, to discriminate the three basic benthic community types: coral, algae and sand. The vegetation and fire history of few coastal sites has been investigated in the Mediterranean region so far. We present the first paleoecological reconstruction from coastal Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. We analysed pollen and charcoal in the sediments of Biviere di Gela, a lake (lagoon) on the south coast of Sicily. Our data suggest that the area became afforested after a marine transgression at ca. 7200 cal b.p. (5250 b.c.). Build-up of forest and shrublands took ca. 200–300 years, mainly with the deciduous trees Quercus, Ostrya and Fraxinus. Juniperus expanded ca. 6900 cal b.p. (4950 b.c.), but declined again 6600 cal b.p. (4650 b.c.). Afterwards, evergreen trees (Q. ilex-type and Olea) became dominant in the forest and Pistacia shrublands were established. Forest and shrubland reached a maximum ca. 7000–5000 cal b.p. (5050–3050 b.c.); subsequently forest declined in response to human impact, which was probably exacerbated by a general trend towards a more arid climate. During the Neolithic, fire was used to open the landscape, significantly reducing several arboreal taxa (Q. ilex, Fraxinus, Juniperus) and promoting herbs and shrubs (Achillea, Cichorioideae, Brassicaceae, Ephedra). Final forest disruption occurred around 2600 cal b.p. (650 b.c.) with the onset of the historically documented Greek colonization. We conclude that the open maquis and garrigue vegetation of today is primarily the consequence of intensive land-use over millennia. Under natural or near-natural conditions arboreal taxa such as Q. ilex, Olea and Pistacia would be far more important than they are today, even under the hot and rather dry coastal conditions of southern Sicily.  相似文献

A pollen diagram was derived from a 150 cm core taken from the shallow hypersaline Lake Maharlou in the south-eastern part of the Zagros Mountains, SW Iran. The pollen record shows that Quercus brantii woodland and Pistacia–Amygdalus scrub dominated the area during the late Holocene. The record starts at around 5700 cal b.p. with a dry period during which both Pistacia–Amygdalus scrub and Quercus brantii woodland were at their minimum extent. This period was followed by the expansion of Pistacia–Amygdalus scrub in the area and the spread of Quercus brantii woodlands at higher altitudes. An important occupation phase, characterized by the appearance of several cultivated tree species such as Juglans, Olea, Vitis and Platanus, started at ca. 4300 cal b.p., coinciding with the onset of the Bronze Age civilization of Jiroft in Central Iran. Human activities become very clear after 3700 cal b.p. Around 2700 cal b.p., extensive stands of Pistacia–Amygdalus scrub became profoundly degraded, presumably under strong human pressure coinciding with the beginning of the Persian Empires. The maximum expansion of the Quercus brantii woodland occurred about 2100 to 1700 cal b.p. This woodland remained relatively stable until the end of the diagram at 400 cal b.p.  相似文献

 The kinetics of methemoglobin reduction by cytochrome b 5 has been studied by stopped-flow and saturation transfer NMR. A forward rate constant k f = 2.44×104 M–1 s–1 and a reverse rate constant k b = 540 M–1s–1 have been observed at 10 mm, pH 6.20, 25  °C. The ratio k f/k b = k eq = 43.6 is in good agreement with the equilibrium constant calculated from the electrochemical potential between cyt b 5 and methemoglobin. A bimolecular collisional mechanism is proposed for the electron transfer from cyt b 5 to methemoglobin based on the kinetic data analysis. The dependence of the rate constants on ionic strengths supports such collisional mechanism. It is also found that the reaction rate strongly depends on the conformations of methemoglobin. Summary The chief mode of carbonate sedimentation on the Belizean atolls Glovers Reef, Lighthouse Reef and Turneffe Islands is the accumulation of organically-derived particles. Variations in the distribution of the composition and grain-sizes of surface sediments, collected along transects across the atolls, are environmentally controlled. Two major sediment types may be distinguished. (1) Reef and fore reef sediments are dominated by fragments of coral, coralline algae andHalimeda. Mean grain-sizes range from 1–2 mm. (2) Back reef sediments contain more mollusk fragments, more fine-grained sediment (<125 μm) and appear to have fewerHalimeda fragments. In addition, sediments from inner platforms and shallow lagoonal parts of Glovers and Lighthouse Reefs comprise non-skeletal grains, namely fecal pellets. Sediments from lagoonal patch reefs may contain up to 20% coral fragments. Mean grain-sizes range from 0.1–1 mm and are finest on the inner platform and lagoon floor of the back reef environment. Within the reef and fore reef environments, it is not possible to distinguish sub-environments on the basis of textural and compositional differences of the sediments. Sediments from patch reefs contrast with those from back reef lagoons and inner platforms and are similar in terms of grain-sizes and compositions to reef and fore reef surface sediments. Non-skeletal grains forming in shallow parts of the back reef in Glovers and Lighthouse Reefs are interpreted to be indurated by interstitial precipitation of calcium carbonate from warm, supersaturated water flushing the sediment. The lack of hardened non-skeletal particles in the back reef sediments of Turneffe Islands is most probably due to the abundance of muddy, organic-rich sediment in the well-protected lagoon. Fine sediment is less permeable and organic films prevent cement overgrowth on particles.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different sources of dietary selenium (Se) supplementation on growth performance, meat quality, Se deposition, and antioxidant property in broilers. A total of 600 one-day-old Ross 308 broilers with an average body weight (BW) of 44.30 ± 0.49 g were randomly allotted to three treatments, each of which included five replicates of 40 birds. These three groups received the same basal diet containing 0.04 mg Se/kg, supplemented with 0.15 mg Se/kg from sodium selenite (SS) or from l-selenomethionine (l-Se-methionine (Met)) or from d-selenomethionine (d-Se-Met). The experiment lasted 42 days. Both Se source and time significantly influenced (p < 0.01) drip loss of breast muscle. Supplementation with l-Se-Met and d-Se-Met were more effective (p < 0.05) in decreasing drip loss than SS. Besides, the pH value of breast muscle was also significantly influenced (p < 0.05) by time. The SS-supplemented diet increased more (p < 0.05) liver, kidney, and pancreas glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities than the d-Se-Met-supplemented diet. In addition, l-Se-Met increased more (p < 0.01) liver and pancreas GSH-Px activities than d-Se-Met. The antioxidant status was greatly improved in broilers of l-Se-Met-treated group in comparison with the SS-treated group and was illuminated by the increased glutathione (GSH) concentration in serum, liver, and breast muscle (p < 0.05); superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in liver (p < 0.01); total antioxidant capability (T-AOC) in kidney, pancreas, and breast muscle (p < 0.05) and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in kidney and breast muscle (p < 0.05) of broilers. Besides, supplementation with d-Se-Met was more effective (p < 0.01) in increasing serum GSH concentration and decreasing breast muscle MDA concentration than SS. l-Selenomethionine supplementation significantly increased GSH concentration in liver and breast muscle (p < 0.05); SOD activity in liver (p < 0.01); and T-AOC in liver, pancreas, and breast muscle (p < 0.05) of broilers, compared with broilers fed d-Se-Met diet. The addition of l-Se-Met and d-Se-Met increased (p < 0.01) Se concentration in serum and different organs studied of broilers in comparision with broilers fed SS diet. Therefore, dietary l-Se-Met and d-Se-Met supplementation could improve antioxidant capability and Se deposition in serum and tissues and reduce drip loss of breast muscle in broilers compared with SS. Besides, l-Se-Met is more effective than d-Se-Met in improving antioxidant status in broilers.  相似文献

Syntheses of l-dopa 1a glucoside 10a,b and dl-dopa 1b glycosides 1018 with d-glucose 2, d-galactose 3, d-mannose 4, d-fructose 5, d-arabinose 6, lactose 7, d-sorbitol 8 and d-mannitol 9 were carried out using amyloglucosidase from Rhizopus mold, β-glucosidase isolated from sweet almond and immobilized β-glucosidase. Invariably, l-dopa and dl-dopa gave low to good yields of glycosides 10–18 at 12–49% range and only mono glycosylated products were detected through glycosylation/arylation at the third or fourth OH positions of l-dopa 1a and dl-dopa 1b. Amyloglucosidase showed selectivity with d-mannose 4 to give 4-O-C1β and d-sorbitol 8 to give 4-O-C6-O-arylated product. β-Glucosidase exhibited selectivity with d-mannose 4 to give 4-O-C1β and lactose 7 to give 4-O-C1β product. Immobilized β-glucosidase did not show any selectivity. Antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition (ACE) activities of the glycosides were evaluated glycosides, out of which l-3-hydroxy-4-O-(β-d-galactopyranosyl-(1′→4)β-d-glucopyranosyl) phenylalanine 16 at 0.9 ± 0.05 mM and dl-3-hydroxy-4-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl) phenylalanine 11b,c at 0.98 ± 0.05 mM showed the best IC50 values for antioxidant activity and dl-3-hydroxy-4-O-(6-d-sorbitol)phenylalanine 17 at 0.56 ± 0.03 mM, l-dopa-d-glucoside 10a,b at 1.1 ± 0.06 mM and dl-3-hydroxy-4-O-(d-glucopyranosyl)phenylalanine 11a-d at 1.2 ± 0.06 mM exhibited the best IC50 values for ACE inhibition. Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived radical that functions as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and plays a physiological role in the regulation of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and vasopressinergic axis. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the interaction between the generation of NO and vasopressin (AVP) and corticosterone release after 3 days of water deprivation in rats. Animals were previously treated with intraperitoneal (i.p.) saline or l-nitro-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) injection. l-NAME is a nonspecific inhibitor of nitric oxide synthases. In control rats given i.p. saline or l-NAME, hypothalamic, pituitary, and plasma AVP levels and plasma corticosterone did not change from baseline levels (p > 0.05). Three days of water deprivation increased significantly the corticosterone levels in plasma (p < 0.01) and AVP levels in hypothalamus and plasma (p < 0.01), but not in pituitary, which showed a significant decrease. These variations were concomitant with the elevation of nitrates/nitrates in plasma. l-NAME injection abolished significantly (p < 0.01) the elevation of plasma corticosterone and hypothalamic AVP levels induced by water deprivation. These findings showed that in water-deprived rats, nitric oxide synthase inhibition by l-NAME inhibits corticosterone and vasopressin release, suggesting a potent stimulatory role of NO.  相似文献

Larger foraminifera are an important component of coastal sediments around Fongafale Island, Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu, and at least 10 species are present. In the shallow lagoon, foraminifera (mainly Amphistegina lessonii, A. lobifera, Baculogypsina sphaerulata, Calcarina spengleri, Marginopora vertebralis, and Sorites marginalis) are the dominant component of sand and gravel, followed in decreasing order of abundance by calcareous red and green algae, coral, and molluscs. In deeper water, Halimeda replaces the foraminifera. Close inshore, abrasion removes Halimeda and may reduce the number of foraminiferal tests. There is some sediment movement in both onshore and offshore directions although offshore transport appears minor. On land, dissolution that preferentially removes aragonite may increase the proportion of foraminiferal tests to as much as 83% of the subsurface sediment. Sediments on the ocean side are dominated by coral and coralline red algal debris thrown up in 1972 by cyclone Bebe and later moved inshore and lagoonward.Communicated by P.K. Swart  相似文献

Bifidobacterium adolescentis, a gram-positive saccharolytic bacterium found in the human colon, can, alongside other bacteria, utilise stachyose in vitro thanks to the production of an α-galactosidase. The enzyme was purified from the cell-free extract of Bi. adolescentis DSM 20083T. It was found to act with retention of configuration (α→α), releasing α-galactose from p-nitrophenyl galactoside. This hydrolysis probably operates with a double-displacement mechanism, and is consistent with the observed glycosyltransferase activity. As α-galactosides are interesting substrates for bifidobacteria, we focused on the production of new types of α-galactosides using the transgalactosylation activity of Bi. adolescentisα-galactosides. Starting from melibiose, raffinose and stachyose oligosaccharides could be formed. The transferase activity was highest at pH 7 and 40 °C. Starting from 300 mM melibiose a maximum yield of 33% oligosaccharides was obtained. The oligosaccharides formed from melibiose were purified by size-exclusion chromatography and their structure was elucidated by NMR spectroscopy in combination with enzymatic degradation and sugar linkage analysis. The trisaccharide α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-d-Glcp and tetrasaccharide α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-d-Glcp were identified, and this indicates that the transgalactosylation to melibiose occurred selectively at the C-6 hydroxyl group of the galactosyl residue. The trisaccaride α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-α-d-Galp-(1 → 6)-d-Glcp formed could be utilised by various intestinal bacteria, including various bifidobacteria, and might be an interesting pre- and synbiotic substrate. Culture conditions for the fermentative production of β-poly(l-malate) (PMLA) by microplasmodia of Physarum polycephalum were investigated and optimized. Optimal production was achieved in the presence of CaCO3. For 1.5% (w/v) d-glucose, 1% bactotryptone and 1% CaCO3, a maximum of 1.7 g PMLA/l was secreted in 3 days. For 4.5% glucose and otherwise the same conditions, 2.7 g PMLA/l was produced in 6 days. The contribution of carbonate was inhibited by avidin. PMLA and biomass production were not strictly coupled: PMLA was also synthesized at the beginning of the stationary phase. At pH 5.5 PMLA production was twice that at pH 4.0, while biomass was not changed. Optimal temperatures were 24–28 °C. Biosurfactants containing rhamnose and β-hydroxydecanoic acid and called rhamnolipids are reviewed with respect to microbial producers, their physiological role, biosynthesis and genetics, and especially their microbial overproduction, physicochemical properties and potential applications. With Pseudomonas species, more than 100 g l−1 rhamnolipids were produced from 160 g l−1 soybean oil at a volumetric productivity of 0.4 g l−1 h−1. The individual rhamnolipids are able to lower the surface tension of water from 72 mN m−1 to 25–30 mN m−1 at concentrations of 10–200 mg l−1. After initial testing, rhamnolipids seem to have potential applications in combating marine oil pollution, removing oil from sand and in combating zoosporic phytopathogens. Rhamnolipids are also a source of l-rhamnose, which is already used for the industrial production of high-quality flavor components. Bryopsidalean algal meadows in water depths of 20–40 m on the leeward side of western Great Bahama Bank (WGBB) lie between non-skeletal-dominated sand flats on the bank top to the east and a cemented steep escarpment to the west. The meadows contain dense populations of rhipsalian Halimeda species, as well as Udotea and Rhipocephalus. Extensive populations of other Halimeda species (opuntioids) occur at greater depths on the cemented rocky escarpment, growing as drapes or vines rather than as upright thalli. These meadows and draperies are important sources of coarse-grained carbonate sediments. This is shown by (1) deeper bank-edge sediments (30–60 m) containing considerably more Halimeda fragments than do the bank top, non-skeletal sands, and (2) the coarser fraction of slope sediments (down to 200 m) dominated by Halimeda plates, partly or extensively altered and internally cemented by magnesian calcite and aragonite. A transect across the bank margin from bank top (<10 m) to lower slope (300 m) provides a useful comparison for the locus of sediment production and accumulation. The production of Halimeda in these bank-edge habitats approximates that in the Great Barrier Reef or off Indonesia and Nicaragua in similar water depths. The apparent lack of thick sediment accumulation in WGBB compared to that seen elsewhere may reflect the high rates of downslope transport off Great Bahama Bank.  相似文献

The gene encoding an α-l-arabinofuranosidase that could biotransform ginsenoside Rc {3-O-[β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1–2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl]-20-O-[α-l-arabinofuranosyl-(1–6)-β-d-glucopyranosyl]-20(S)-protopanaxadiol} to ginsenoside Rd {3-O-[β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1–2)-β-d-glucopyranosyl]-20-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-20(S)-protopanaxadiol} was cloned from a soil bacterium, Rhodanobacter ginsenosidimutans strain Gsoil 3054T, and the recombinant enzyme was characterized. The enzyme (AbfA) hydrolyzed the arabinofuranosyl moiety from ginsenoside Rc and was classified as a family 51 glycoside hydrolase based on amino acid sequence analysis. Recombinant AbfA expressed in Escherichia coli hydrolyzed non-reducing arabinofuranoside moieties with apparent K m values of 0.53 ± 0.07 and 0.30 ± 0.07 mM and V max values of 27.1 ± 1.7 and 49.6 ± 4.1 μmol min−1 mg−1 of protein for p-nitrophenyl-α-l-arabinofuranoside and ginsenoside Rc, respectively. The enzyme exhibited preferential substrate specificity of the exo-type mode of action towards polyarabinosides or oligoarabinosides. AbfA demonstrated substrate-specific activity for the bioconversion of ginsenosides, as it hydrolyzed only arabinofuranoside moieties from ginsenoside Rc and its derivatives, and not other sugar groups. These results are the first report of a glycoside hydrolase family 51 α-l-arabinofuranosidase that can transform ginsenoside Rc to Rd.  相似文献

Detailed Late-glacial and Holocene palaeoenvironmental records from the northern Apennines with a robust chronology are still rare, though the region has been regarded as a main area of potential refugia of important trees such as Picea abies and Abies alba. We present a new high-resolution pollen and stomata record from Lago del Greppo (1,442 m a.s.l., Pistoia, northern Apennines) that has been dated relying on 12 terrestrial plant macrofossils. Late-glacial woodlands became established before 13000 cal b.p. and were dominated by Pinus and Betula, although more thermophilous taxa such as Quercus, Tilia and Ulmus were already present in the Greppo area, probably at lower altitudes. Abies and Picea expanded locally at the onset of the Holocene at ca. 11500 cal b.p. Fagus sylvatica was the last important tree to expand at ca. 6500 cal b.p., following the decline of Abies. Human impact was generally low throughout the Holocene, and the local woods remained rather closed until the most recent time, ca. a.d. 1700–1800. The vegetational history of Lago del Greppo appears consistent with that of previous investigations in the study region. Late-glacial and Holocene vegetation dynamics in the northern Apennines are very similar to those in the Insubrian southern Alps bordering Switzerland and Italy, across the Po Plain. Similarities between the two areas include the Late-glacial presence of Abies alba, its strong dominance during the Holocene across different vegetation belts from the lowlands to high elevations, as well as its final fire and human-triggered reduction during the mid Holocene. Our new data suggest that isolated and minor Picea abies populations survived the Late-glacial in the foothills of the northern Apennines and that at the onset of the Holocene they moved upwards, reaching the site of Lago del Greppo. Today stands of Picea abies occur only in two small areas in the highest part of the northern Apennines, and they have become extinct elsewhere. Given the forecast global warming, these relict Picea abies stands of the northern Apennines, which have a history of at least 13,000 years, appear severely endangered.  相似文献

 Reactions (25  °C) of galactose oxidase, GOaseox from Fusarium NRRL 2903 with five different primary-alcohol-containing substrates RCH2OH:- D-galactose (I) and 2-deoxy-d-galactose (II) (monosaccharides); methyl-β-d-galactopyranoside (III) (glycoside);d-raffinose (IV) (trisaccharide); and dihydroxyacetone (V) have been studied in the presence of O2. The GOaseox state has a tyrosyl radical coordinated at a square-pyramidal CuII active site, and is a two-equivalent oxidant. Reactant concentrations were [GOaseox] (0.8–10 μM), RCH2OH (1.0–6.0 mM), and O2 (0.14–0.29 mM), with I=0.100 M (NaCl). The reactions, monitored at 450 nm by stopped-flow spectrophotometry, terminated with depletion of the O2. Each trace was fitted to the competing reactions GOaseox+RCH2 OH → GOaseredH2+RCHO (k 1), and GOaseredH2+O2→ GOaseox+H2O2 (k 2), with GOaseredH2 written as the doubly protonated two-electron-reduced CuI product. It was necessary to avoid auto-redox interconversion of GOaseox and GOasesemi . Information obtained at pH 7.5 indicates a 5 : 95 (ox : semi) "native" mix equilibration complete in ∼3 h. At pH >7.5, rate constants 10–4k 1 / M–1 s–1 for the reactions of GOaseox with (I) (1.19), (II) (1.07), (III) (1.29), (IV) (1.81), (V) (2.94) were determined. On decreasing the pH to 5.5, k 1 values decreased by factors of up to a half, and acid dissociation pK as in the range 6.6–6.9 were obtained. UV-Vis spectrophotometric studies on GOaseox gave an independently determined pK a of 6.7. No corresponding reactions of the Tyr495Phe variant were observed, and there are no similar UV-Vis absorbance changes for this variant. The pK a is therefore assigned to protonation of Tyr-495 which is a ligand to the Cu. The rate constant k 2 (1.01×107 M–1 s–1) is independent of pH in the range 5.5–9.0 investigated, suggesting that H+ (or H-atoms) for the O2 → H2O2 change are provided by the active site of GOasered . A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments in randomized design was conducted to investigate the effect of different selenomethionine (SM) sources and levels on the productive performance of breeder hens and the Se distribution in the inclusion of eggs and serum and tissues of breeder hens and its offspring. A total of 480 Ling-Nan-Huang breeder hens, 48 weeks of age, were allocated to four treatments, each of which included three replicates of 40 hens. Pretreatment period was 2 weeks, and the experiment lasted 8 weeks. Two SM forms of dl-SM and l-SM were supplemented at 0.15 or 0.30 mg Se/kg into the basal diet. Results showed that the Se level of 0.15 mg/kg supplemented in the diet, compared to 0.30 mg/kg, significantly elevated the percentage of egg production (p < 0.05), hatchability (p < 0.01), and birthrate (p < 0.01), whereas the Se level of 0.30 mg/kg led to a higher Se content in egg contents, serum, and all tissues (p < 0.01). In addition, the form of dl-SM showed a significant increase in Se content of egg inclusion (p < 0.01), serum (p < 0.01), and all tissues (p < 0.01, except breeder hens’ pancreas and its offspring’s liver and breast muscle). The birthrate and yolk Se content were markedly influenced by the interaction between Se source and Se level (p < 0.01). The zooxanthellate octocoral Sinularia flexibilis is a producer of potential pharmaceutically important metabolites such as antimicrobial and cytotoxic substances. Controlled rearing of the coral, as an alternative for commercial exploitation of these compounds, requires the study of species-specific growth requirements. In this study, phototrophic vs. heterotrophic daily energy demands of S. flexibilis was investigated through light and Artemia feeding trials in the laboratory. Rate of photosynthetic oxygen by zooxanthellae in light (≈200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) was measured for the coral colonies with and without feeding on Artemia nauplii. Respiratory oxygen was measured in the dark, again with and without Artemia nauplii. Photosynthesis–irradiance curve at light intensities of 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 showed an increase in photosynthetic oxygen production up to a light intensity between 100 and 200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1. The photosynthesis to respiration ratio (P/R > 1) confirmed phototrophy of S. flexibilis. Both fed and non-fed colonies in the light showed high carbon contribution by zooxanthellae to animal (host) respiration values of 111–127%. Carbon energy equivalents allocated to the coral growth averaged 6–12% of total photosynthesis energy (mg C g 1 buoyant weight day 1) and about 0.02% of the total daily radiant energy. “Light utilization efficiency (ε)” estimated an average ε value of 75% 12 h 1 for coral practical energetics. This study shows that besides a fundamental role of phototrophy vs. heterotrophy in daily energy budget of S. flexibilis, an efficient fraction of irradiance is converted to useable energy.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variabilities in species composition, abundance, distribution, and bioeroding activity of euendolithic microorganisms were investigated in experimental blocks of the massive coral Porites along an inshore–offshore transect across the northern Great Barrier Reef (Australia) over a 3-year period. Inshore reefs showed turbid and eutrophic waters, whereas the offshore reefs were characterized by oligotrophic waters. The euendolithic microorganisms and their ecological characteristics were studied using techniques of microscopy, petrographic sections, and image analysis. Results showed that euendolithic communities found in blocks of coral were mature. These communities were dominated by the chlorophyte Ostreobium quekettii, the cyanobacterium Plectonema terebrans, and fungi. O. quekettii was found to be the principal agent of microbioerosion, responsible for 70–90% of carbonate removal. In the offshore reefs, this oligophotic chlorophyte showed extensive systems of filaments that penetrated deep inside coral skeletons (up to 4.1 mm) eroding as much as 1 kg CaCO3 eroded m−2 year−1. The percentage of colonization by euendolithic filaments at the surface of blocks did not vary significantly among sites, while their depths of penetration, especially that of O. quekettii (0.6–4.1 mm), increased significantly and gradually with the distance from the shore. Rates of microbioerosion (0.1–1.4 kg m−2 after 1 year and 0.2–1.3 kg m−2 after 3 years of exposure) showed a pattern similar to the one found for the depth of penetration of O. quekettii filaments. Accordingly, oligotrophic reefs had the highest rates of microbioerosion of up to 1.3 kg m−2 year−1, whereas the development of euendolithic communities in inshore reefs appeared to be limited by turbidity, high sedimentation rates, and low grazing pressure (rates <0.5 kg m−2 after 3 years). Those results suggest that boring microorganisms, including O. quekettii, have a significant impact on the overall calcium carbonate budget of coral reef ecosystems, which varies according to environmental conditions.  相似文献

A 50 m-long radiocarbon dated core was studied through sediment and pollen analysis to reconstruct the Holocene mangrove and environmental changes at a coastal site Pakhiralaya in the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve in the western Ganga–Brahmaputra Delta, India. This biosphere reserve harbours a diverse mangrove ecosystem and supports a large number of people living in the area. Pollen and stratigraphic data indicate the existence of a brackish water estuarine mangrove swamp forest in this area during the last 9880 cal yr b.p. The development of the mangrove forest is not shown continuously in the Holocene record. Rapid transgression of the sea (9240 cal yr b.p.) halted the development of the mangrove. After about 8420 cal yr b.p. mangrove recolonised the area and persisted until 7560 cal yr b.p. as a result of a balance between the sedimentation and sea level fluctuation. The mangrove disappeared again from the site until 4800 cal yr b.p. because of a high sedimentation rate and possible delta progradation with loss of habitats. The reappearance of mangrove at the study site occurred with a return of a brackish water estuarine environment and the site then gradually became supra tidal during the mid-late Holocene. The continuity of the mangrove development and dynamics was interrupted by the fluctuating sea levels. Climatic fluctuations were viewed as an indirect factor influencing the mangrove ecosystem.  相似文献
