The saddleback syndromes were observed in several commercial fishes obtained from Saudi Arabian coast of the Arabian Gulf. These deformities resulting in missing dorsal spines or rays, sometimes accompanied by a depression in the dorsal profile, were found in ten fish species from seven families. Other morphological abnormalities such as scale disturbances, lateral line deformity, and kyphosis, the presence of a lesion, slight ambicoloration, and supraneural deformities accompanying the saddleback deformity were also observed. The occurrence of similar deformities across such a spectrum of fishes from the same location suggests that the abnormalities were induced by something in the environment common to all these species.  相似文献

Red porgy is a candidate species for marine aquaculture diversification. The objective of the present study was to describe the osteological development in this species and the occurrence of skeletal deformities in relation to the intensification of the rearing system. Fish samples were periodically collected along the development from hatching to juveniles (95 days after hatching). Osteological development and the presence of skeleton abnormalities were evaluated. Larvae reared under S‐IS showed a better growth in terms of total length in comparison with IS reared ones. Regarding to osteological development for red porgy, this was similar between fish from both culture systems, but differing in timing of apparition and ossification of skeletal elements. X‐ray studies revealed a high number of fish with skeletal deformities (Semi‐intensive: 38.8%; Intensive: 46.5%), but no significant effect of the rearing technique on the incidence of deformities such as lordosis or fused vertebrae was found. However, cranial abnormalities and kyphosis incidences were significantly higher in intensive system cultured red porgy. These results, suggest a relationship among rearing technique, osteological development and the apparition of certain deformities.  相似文献

Periphytic diatom communities were analyzed from several heavy metal contaminated water bodies of Haryana, India. Among the analyzed sites, site HO3 (Saraswati Dham, Kurukshetra, Pehowa) showed significant response in the periphytic diatom community in terms of community shift (dominance of Gomphonema pseudoaugur) and lower biodiversity indices (species richness and Shannon index). Gomphonema pseudoaugur responded more specifically through induction of lipid bodies and occurrence of deformities in diatom frustules. PCA analysis showed that site HO3 is contaminated with heavy metals, especially Pb and Se. Pearson's correlation analysis showed a positive and statistically strong relationship between induction of lipid bodies and deformities with heavy metals (Pb and Se). Finally, from the present study, we concluded that heavy metal stress induces increased lipid body (LBs) size and deformities in the diatom species Gomphonema pseudoaugur, which could be a valuable indicator species for biomonitoring and a consideration in biofuel production.  相似文献

We recently documented an epizootic of beak deformities in more than 2,000 Blackcapped Chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and other wild bird species in North America. This emerging avian disease, which has been termed avian keratin disorder, results in gross overgrowth of the rhamphotheca, the outer, keratinized layer of the beak. To test the hypothesis that the beak deformities characteristic of this disorder are associated with accelerated keratin production, we measured rates of beak growth and wear in affected Black-capped Chickadees (n=16) and a control sample of unaffected chickadees (n=14) collected from south-central (61°09'-61°38'N, 149°11' -149°48'W) and interior Alaska (64°51' -64°53'N, 147°49' -147°59'W). Rates of absolute growth were 50-100% higher in affected birds than they were in control birds and exceeded records from other passerine species. These results suggest that abnormally rapid epidermal growth is the primary physical mechanism by which beak deformities develop and are maintained in affected chickadees. Although beak overgrowth typically worsened over time, differential patterns of wear influenced the severity and morphology of deformities. In some cases, the effects of accelerated keratin growth were partially mitigated by frequent breakage of rhamphothecal tips. However, mortalities occurred in 9 of 16 birds (56%) with beak deformities during the study, suggesting that avian keratin disorder results in severe health consequences for affected birds. Additional study of factors that control beak keratin production is needed to understand the pathogenesis of this debilitating disease in wild birds.  相似文献

A procedure is described for breeding Convict Cichlid ( Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum ) tropical fish under laboratory conditions. Three generations of Convict Cichlids were bred successfully using this procedure and there was no significant incidence of deformities from in–breeding to the F3 , which contrasts with a high incidence of skeletal deformities observed when Zebra Danio tropical fish were inbred to the F 3 generation. The Convict Cichlid is a suitable species for laboratory toxicity testing, particularly studies to assess effects on breeding performance.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Larval Chironomus decorus (Diptera: Chironomidae), taken from experimental ponds to which a coal liquid had been added, were found to have deformities of the mentum. Aberrations of the medial portion of the mentum were significantly dose-related. Occurrence of such deformities appeared to be a less sensitive measure of pollution by the coal liquid than did previously reported changes in abundance, biomass, number of taxa, and species diversity of benthic insects.  相似文献

Reports of limb deformities in amphibians have garnered wide notice from scientists and the public alike. Recent laboratory and field research has supported the hypothesis that infection by the helminth parasite, Ribeiroia ondatrae, is associated with deformities, particularly in the western United States. In this study, observational and experimental evidence from eastern United States (Vermont) provides evidence that Ribeiroia is absent from a large sample of sites including those with a history of relatively high frequencies of deformity, that the composition of deformities is distinct from that associated with experimental infection by Ribeiroia, and that the composition of limb deformities seen in natural populations in Vermont is typical of that reported in the literature. We suggest that while Ribeiroia has been shown to be responsible for deformities in some species and locations, other factors may be responsible where the composition of deformities is inconsistent with patterns resulting from known Ribeiroia infection.  相似文献

We used trematode cyst infestation to induce limb deformities in two species of frogs of the genus Rana and compared them to deformities induced by surgical limb bud rotations. The specific deformities produced by both treatments closely resemble those of wild-caught deformed amphibians and are consistent with a known developmental response to disruption of the spatial organization of cells in developing limb buds. Histological analysis showed that trematode cysts cause massive disruption and abnormal cellular growth involving the limb buds of infected individuals. Our results indicate that trematode cyst infestation causes deformities in frogs by perturbation of the positional relationships of cells in developing limb buds. The crippling effects of cyst-infection on frogs may reflect complex co-evolutionary interactions among trematodes, frogs, and other hosts in the trematode's life cycle.  相似文献

This study aims at analyzing morphological deformities in Palaemon population in the Gironde estuary. The most frequent abnormalities affected cephalothorax and rostrum, and to a lesser extent scaphocerites and uropods (with spectacular dissymmetry), whilst only few cases of antenna and telson deformities were observed. References on morphological abnormalities of crustaceans can be found in the literature, but dealing with only isolated individuals and not for Palaemonids species, whilst in the Gironde estuary up to 40% of adult individuals are affected. Deformities likely depend on water pollutants, among others heavy metals and PCBs. This hypothesis should be tested considering other European estuaries with similar features. Handling editor: P. Synopsis We described skeletal deformities in Willamette River fishes from larval and juvenile specimens collected in 2002 and 2003. Deformities were found in most taxa examined but were more frequent in native broadcast spawners, especially minnows and suckers, than in native or exotic nest builders. Caudal deformities were uniformly distributed throughout the river, but precaudal deformities were more localized near the towns of Newberg and Salem (Wheatland Ferry). In northern pikeminnow, Ptychocheilus oregonensis, deformities were dependent on relative hatch date, with early season fish having about three times the deformity load as late season fish. In a subsample of northern pikeminnow and chiselmouth, Acrocheilus alutaceus, number of deformities was directly related to number of trematode metacercariae and precaudal deformities were twice as likely as caudal deformities to be associated with metacercariae. Based on a logistic regression, the probability of a precaudal deformity was dependent on number of metacercariae and geographic area with the area effect disappearing as the number of cysts increased. A separate analysis showed that some types of deformities were unlikely to be associated with metacercariae. However, even in cases where metacercariae were unlikely to be associated with deformities, metacercariae were usually present elsewhere in the fish and an indirect effect could not be dismissed. The taxonomic, spatial and temporal patterns of skeletal deformities in Willamette River fishes may be due to differences in intermediate host (snail or fish) resistance or susceptibility to parasites, to differences in life history ecology, or to anthropogenic effects that are manifest in increased precaudal deformities near Newberg and Wheatland Ferry or decreased rates elsewhere.  相似文献

Laboratory bred Zebra Danio ( Brachydanio rerio , Hamilton-Buchanan) tropical fish are prone to skeletal deformities resembling scoliosis and lordosis. This condition appears related to diet and has been studied by breeding from different broods of fish for three generations. Two broods bred using two commercially available tropical flaked foods developed severe spinal curvature three to six weeks post-hatching. A third brood of fish fed exclusively on live food did not develop any deformity. The results demonstrate that a dietary factor is responsible for the deformities and that the Zebra Danio is especially susceptible to this factor as other species breed normally when fed the same commercial diet. Analysis of the diets showed no deficiency in either ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) or tryptophan, deficiency of either being associated with scoliosis and lordosis in fish. The analysis did show, however, a relationship between the lead content of the diet and the incidence of deformities. Lead has previously been implicated in skeletal deformities in second and third generation Brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis.  相似文献

Despite the great interest of red porgy as a new species for Mediterranean aquaculture, its commercial production is constrained by the high incidence of skeletal deformities occurring in this species under culture conditions. Several studies have been conducted to better understand the origin of these anomalies in this species, using different system intensiveness, rotifers enrichment products or rotifers docosahexaenoic acid content. The first study showed that culture intensification increased the number of fish with an extra vertebrae, what was probably related to the different nutritional quality of live preys employed in each treatment, since water temperature, salinity and genetic background were identical for the different batches of fish studied. Total incidence of skeletal abnormalities was higher in the intensive system, particularly cranial abnormalities and kyphosis in the cephalic vertebrae. In both rearing systems the most common skeletal anomalies were vertebral column disorders, lordosis and fused vertebrae, their localization along the column being affected by the culture intensiveness. Rotifer enrichment, predominantly its docosahexaenoic acid content significantly affected deformities occurrence. A marked positive effect of rotifer docosahexaenoic acid content was found on larval survival. X‐ray studies denoted elevated levels of bone abnormalities associated, in both trials, to low docosahexaenoic acid content in live preys. Among different anomalies, the presence of fused vertebrae was the most frequent deformity for both rearing trials. A 50% reduction in the number of deformed fish for each type of deformity was obtained when the larvae were fed higher docosahexaenoic acid levels, denoting the important role of this fatty acid in bone development. Further studies are needed to elucidate the importance of essential fatty acids on the development of bone deformities in fish, since the functions of these fatty acids differ among them and can lead to very different effects in fish metabolism, including bone formation.  相似文献

Synopsis Stunted or missing dorsal spines or rays, sometimes accompanied by a depression in the dorsal profile, were found in 10 fish species in six families from North Biscayne Bay. The same morphological abnormality occurred inHaemulon sciurus, H. parrai, H. plumieri, Lagodon rhomboides, Archosargus rhomboidalis, Diplodus argenteus, Lutjanus griseus, Kyphosus sectatrix, Sphoeroides testudineus, andLactrophyrys quadricornis. Another morphological abnormality, scale disorientation, was found in six species:H. parrai, L. rhomboides, A. rhomboidalis, L. griseus, andAbudefduf saxatilis. Pugheadedness, jaw deformities, and other abnormalities also were observed. The occurrence of similar deformities across such a spectrum of fishes from the same location suggests the deformity was induced by something in the environment common to all these species. Although there could be other explanations for the unusual cluster of abnormalities, it is suspected that the same environmental contaminant or group of contaminants is adversely affecting a common developmental pathway of these fishes. Biscayne Bay is an urban estuary that receives agricultural, industrial, and residential run off.  相似文献

Tubificid worms of the species Pomatothrix hammoniensis with characteristic, but hitherto unknown, deformities are described from four bays and fjords of Lake Vänern, Southern Sweden. These worms are easily recognized, since their chaetae are grotesquely enlarged distally, others are strongly serrated or deeply split, etc. These deformities are clearly associated with pollutants, since the limited areas of the lake in which they occur have long been under severe stress from industrial and municipal wastes, especially from nearby pulp mild and chlor-alkaline industries from which mercury compounds are known to emanate. Lake Vänern belongs to the most mercury-polluted major lakes of the world (Håkansson, 1976) with sediment concentrations of up to 10 000 ng Hg g?1 dry weight (natural back-ground value about 30 ng g?1 dry weight). The Kendall Rank statistical test showed a highly significant correlation (τ = 0.87; S = 14) between the incidence of deformities and mercury deposits in the lake. Zinc and cadmium are also deposited in large concentrations in the lake and there are also a variety of chlorinated organic compounds in the waste water about which we know little at present. It is speculated that synergistic effects between contaminants may be responsible for the deformities. It is likely that the observed deformities are mainly of phenotypic origin, since aberrant young specimens are uncommon.  相似文献

Spinal deformities in Aphanius fasciatus were observed in fish collected from polluted (S1) and non-polluted (S2) areas in the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia. Kyphosis, scoliosis and lordosis were detected and these basic deformities frequently co-occur in varying degrees of severity. A total of 612 specimens of A. fasciatus were caught and 54 were found to be deformed, which represents 8.82%. Deformed fish were eight times more frequent in S1 than in S2, possibly indicating a relationship between pollution levels and skeletal malformation. In both sexes, variation of deformities incidence with length was very similar. The highest occurrence of deformities was observed in fish with total length <25 mm and decreasing thereafter with fish length. The possible causes for such deformities as well as the suitability of this kind of study for environmental monitoring are discussed.  相似文献

We previously reported that characteristic deformities were induced by retinoic acid (RA) treatment of the Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, at 6-9 days post-hatching (dph). To evaluate the toxic potency of nuclear retinoid receptors in induction of deformities by RA, we here investigated the effects of retinoic acid isomers on postembryonic development of this species. Larvae were exposed to either 25 nM of all-trans RA (atRA), 9-cis RA (9cRA) or 13-cis RA (13cRA) at 6-9 dph. All RA isomers induced deformities in the lower jaw, caudal fin and vertebrae. In the lower jaw, growth retardation of the dentary was evident. In the vertebrae, the major abnormalities were hypertrophy of the centrum, central fusion, and an increase in the number of abdominal vertebrae. Caudal fin deformities included deformity of caudal bone complex and absence of the entire caudal fin. The absence of the hypural primordium at 12 dph was the first sign of abnormality in caudal fin development, and resulted in complete blocking of the caudal fin development. Among the RA isomers, atRA induced the most severe deformity in all skeletons examined. Retinoic acid receptor (RAR) expression was activated by atRA and 9cRA, and pitx2 expression was inhibited in the lower jaw by atRA and 9cRA. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression was specifically inhibited by atRA treatment, suggesting that RA inhibits the lower jaw growth by suppressing the expression of these genes. These results suggest that RA exerted toxic effects on the skeletal systems, mainly through the RAR pathway.  相似文献

In four species of gobiid fish caught in Tagus estuary during 1996, the incidence of skeletal deformities ranged from 2 to 5%. Differences between sampling stations or between the two most abundant species Pomatoschistus minutus and Gobius niger were statistically not significant (p > 0.05). The type of deformity depended upon species. P. minutus and P. microps showed bone nodules at the inferior side of the abdominal vertebrae, whilst G. niger and G. paganellus had shortened caudal vertebrae (achondroplasia) and deformed ural plates. The possible role of pollution or other conditions in the Tagus estuary is discussed.  相似文献
