The hypothesis was tested that Daphnia exhibit low populationrecruitment in a lake with phosphorus (P)-deficient food, whereDaphnia populations failed to increase in response to greatlylowered minnow density. Egg ratio analysis was performed onDaphnia retrocurva from L110 of the Experimental Lakes Area,Ontario, in 1994. L110 has high food abundance (seston carbon(C) 100 µM C), but the seston is P deficient (C:P atomic- 600). Chrysophytes dominated the algal community. The fishcommunity in this lake was manipulated in 1993 and 1994 by theaddition of northern pike, Esox lucius. Zooplanktivorous minnowswere greatly reduced after the piscivore addition, but the expectedincrease in abundance of the Daphnia to this altered predationregime was not observed, If food quality constrains the responseof the Daphnia to changed predation, there should be low recruitment in the relatively sparse Daphnia population in this lake.Birth rates estimated by standard egg ratio analysis were <0.1day–1 for most of the sample period. In comparison toannual averages from the literature, recruitment in L110 wasmoderately, but not dramatically, low. Daphnia exhibited pronounced‘normal’ vertical migration (up at night, down duringthe day) all year, and a strongly declining size at first reproductionthrough the season. Population density and birth rates seemedto show much less short-term change than previously observedin other lakes. Although the demo graphic predictions for foodquality constraints seemed clear, in situ demography unfortunatelyneither supported nor strongly rejected the overall hypothesisof food quality limitation in this lake with very high C:P ratios.Possibly, direct demographic effects of low food quality willbe difficult to observe in nature.  相似文献

Ammonium release rates by individual marine copepods (Eucalanuspileatus) were examined kinetically over successive 10-min intervalsafter the animals were exposed to three concentrations of thediatom Thalassiosira fluviatilis as food. Food concentrationsspanned those expected in the natural environment. "Well-fed"(3 mm3 T. fluviatilis l–1) copepods released ammoniumsignificantly (p<0.05) faster than those fed zero or lowconcentrations of food, but differences were not dramatic. Meanexcretion rates (± SE) for animals removed from foodfor 18 –22 h [30 ± 6 nmol NH4(mg ash free dry weight)–1h –1] were 60% of those for "well-fed" animals [49 ±8 nmol NH4 (mg ash free dry weight)–1 h–1]. Continuedhigh release rates after extended periods without food suggestthat E. pileatus must feed frequently in nature to maintainan adequate nitrogen balance. Depending on food concentration, animals released ammonium at rates ranging from 40 to > 100%of their N ingestion rates over the previous 18–22 h.Long-term (4–6 h) kinetic excretion experiments with "well-fed"animals indicated that, on average, release rates decreasedwith time after food removal, but patterns varied among individualcopepods. In addition to ammonium release, o-phthalaldehydereactive amino acid nitrogen was occasionally released by E.pileatus in large "spurt events" lasting from 20 to 60 min. 1GLERL Contribution No. 283  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of two freshwater zooplankton species, the calanoid copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis and the cladoceranDaphnia longispina, at extremely low food concentrations hasbeen studied in order to test whether the animals react as predictedby the models of optimal foraging. Three different sized algae were offered in concentrations downto 1µg C/litre at 7°C during winter and 19°C duringsummer. Ingestion rates were measured by use of a flow-through14C-technique In contrast to the findings of several authors working withmarine copepods a threshold concentration where the animalsceased filtering could be detected only in one experiment byregression analysis (Daphnia, 19°C, food: Stichococcus).A depression of the filtering rate at low concentrations wasobserved only in Daphnia at 19°C with Stichococcus and Scenedesmusas food. It is supposed that in this case the reduction of thefiltering rate is not a direct response of the filtrator, butis caused by exhaustion due to the experimental conditions. As freshwater zooplankton is very rarely exposed to food abundancesas low as in the marine environment, there seems to be no selectionpressure favouring the evolution of an "optimal forager" behaviour. The growth of juvenile Bithynia tentaculata (Proso-branchia,Bithyniidae) was measured under controlled laboratory conditionsover 18 months. The animals were fed with different concentrationsof suspended food (Chlamydomonas reinhardii at 2, 000 cells.ml–1and at 10, 000 cells.ml–1), solid food (lettuce) and combinationsof both (lettuce with 2, 000 cells.ml–1 and with 10, 000cells.ml–1 Chlamydomonas). The growth of all animals wasmeasured weekly, and after 1 years final shell sizes, shelldry weights and ash-free dry weights, as well as soft body dryweights and ash-free dry weights were determined. Survival rateof the animals increased from 20% when fed with 2, 000 algalcells.ml–1 to 75% with lettuce and 10, 000 cells.ml–1as food. Final shell sizes and shell weights were not influencedby food, but soft body dry weights were significantly reducedwhen animals were fed on suspended food only. Reproduction (i.e.egg laying) was observed at the end of the second summer whenlettuce (with or without algal addition) was given as food. The ecological consequences of these results are discussed. A factorial experiment shows highly significant effects of temperature(12 5–22.5°C) and salinity (17.8–34 S) on thegrowth rate of Gyrodinium aureolum, with a significant temperature-salinityinteraction. The maximum growth rate of G aureolum is measuredto 0.61 div. day–1 at 20°C and 22.3 S. Gyrodiniumaureolum does not grow at temperatures :10 °C or 25°Cand at salinities 12 S. The cellular content of carbon (C) andnitrogen (N) and the elemental ratios N/C, P/C and N/P are significantlyaffected by the temperature The cellular content of phosphorus(P) and the elemental ratios P/C and N/P vary significantlywith salinity Significant temperature-salinity interactionsare found for the cellular content of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.Variations in the N/P ratio indicate that G.aureolum has a largestorage capacity for phosphorus It is suggested that temperatureis one important limiting factor in the initiation of bloomsof G.aureolum in north European waters.  相似文献

In situ filtration responses of Daphnia galeata to changes in food quality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the stoichiometric study of phyto–zooplankton interactions,a controversy exists about how Daphnia species regulate theirfeeding rate when submitted to low-quality food (i.e. high dietarycarbon:phosphorus [C:P] ratio). In this study, we gathered dataover 3 years on in situ clearance rates of a Daphnia galeatapopulation, by conducting grazing experiments from April 1998to October 2000 in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Grand-Duchyof Luxembourg). Observed clearance rates (2.5–13.5 mLindividual–1 day–1, mean 7.0 mL individual–1day–1) were correlated with population and environmentalvariables. Mean body size of Daphnia individuals was the bestpredictor of clearance rate (r2 = 0.639), followed by watertemperature (r2 = 0.262) and P concentration in the seston (r2  相似文献

Herbivores often encounter nutritional deficiencies in their diets because of low nutrient content of plant biomass. Consumption of various diet items with different nutrient contents can potentially alleviate these nutritional deficiencies. However, most laboratory studies and modeling of herbivorous animals have been done with diets in which all food has uniform nutrient content. It is not clear whether heterogeneous versus uniform food of equal overall nutrient content is of equivalent nutritional value. We tested the effects of dietary mixing on performance of a model organism, Daphnia. We fed two species of Daphnia ( D. galeata, D. pulicaria) with diets of equivalent bulk stoichiometric food quality (C:P) and studied whether they would produce equivalent performance when C:P was uniform among cells or when the diet involved a mixture of high C:P and low C:P cells. Daphnia were fed saturating and limiting concentrations of a uniform food of moderate C:P (UNI) or mixtures (MIX) of high C:P (LOP) and low C:P (HIP) algae prepared to match C:P in UNI. Daphnia were also fed HIP and LOP algae separately. Juvenile growth rate and adult fecundity were measured. D. galeata performance in UNI and MIX treatments did not differ, indicating that partitioning of C and P among particles did not affect dietary quality. Similarly, D. pulicarias performance was similar in the MIX and UNI treatments but only at low food abundance. In the high food treatment, both growth and reproduction were higher in the MIX treatment, indicating some benefit of a more heterogeneous diet. The mechanisms for this improvement are unclear. Also, food quality affected growth and reproduction even at low food levels for both D. pulicaria and D. galeata. Our results indicate that some species of zooplankton can benefit from stoichiometric heterogeneity on diet.  相似文献

The carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents (%of dry weight) of some crustacean zooplankton were studied inthe Baltic Sea. The copepod Acartia sp. had a stable C and Ncontent (48.3 ± 0.8% C, 12.4 ± 0.2% N, C:N ratio4.5 ± 0.1). The P content was variable (1–2%),probably depending on developmental stage and season. Copepodsaccumulating fat, like Pseudocalanus minutus elongatus, hadhigher and more variable C content (50–60%), and lowerN and P content (7–12% N, 0.6–1.5% P). The highestC and lowest N and P contents were found in adult Limnocalanusmacrurus. However, the N:P ratio was apparently independentof fat content and between 14 and 27 for all copepods. The cladoceransBosmina longispina maritima and Evadne nordmanni had lower Ncontent (9.3–10.8%) and higher C:N ratio (5.1–5.7)than Acartia sp. The P content (1.2–1.4%) was similarto Acartia sp. and the N:P ratios (16–19) were in thelower range of that found for the copepods. The N:P ratio wasgenerally somewhat higher in the copepods than in seston, whichmost of the year had nearly Redfield C:N:P ratios. Potentially, nutrient recycling from crustacean zooplankton could enhanceN limitation of phytoplankton, but small stoichiometric differencessuggest that this effect is probably weak. The extent is dependenton the structure of the zooplankton community and the grossgrowth efficiencies. Acartia copepodites, which had nearly RedfieldN:P ratios, would have the opposite effect and enhance P limitationin late summer when seston N:P ratios increased.  相似文献

Aspects of the physiology and feeding behaviour of the scavengingsnails, Babylonia lutosa and Nassarius festivus have been studiedand compared. N. festivus has a wider physiological tolerancethan B. lutosa; upper lethal temperatures being 31.5°C and28.5°C respectively and lower lethal salinities 15.5 and11.5. N. festivus was also more resistant to desiccation. N.festivus is adapted to an intertidal environment that is morevariable than the subtidal habitat of B. lutosa. The metabolicrate of adult N. festivus was two to three times higher thanthat of adult B. lutosa, the specific oxygen consumption rateof the former being 7.91±0.49x10–6 mol of O2.g–1wet wt.hr–1. This correlates with estimates of consumptionobtained for the two animals, B. lutosa eating, on average,6.57% of its wet tissue weight per day, N. festivus 15.33%.Standardization of the data for 2 g animals of both species, however, reveals no significant difference in terms of oxygenconsumption and thus the enhanced consumption by N. festivussimply reflects its smaller size. Both species are opportunisticfeeders and can survive long periods of starvation (>100days). The feeding strategies of the two are also different,N. festivus eating faster than B. lutosa, possibly because ofthe more ephemeral nature of carrion in the intertidal. Starvationaffected the feeding behaviour of N. festivus more than B. lutosaand N. festivus was able to perceive carrion from greater relativedistances than B. lutosa. McGuire, Michelle, Michael F. Carey, and John J. O'Connor.Almitrine and doxapram decrease fatigue and increase subsequent recovery in isolated rat diaphragm. J. Appl.Physiol. 83(1): 52-58, 1997.The effects ofalmitrine bimesylate and doxapram HCl on isometric force produced by invitro rat diaphragm were studied during direct muscle activation at37°C. Doxapram and almitrine ameliorate respiratory failureclinically by indirectly increasing phrenic nerve activity. This studywas carried out to investigate possible direct actions of these agentson the diaphragm before and after fatigue of the fibers. Two age groupsof animals were chosen [6-14 wk (group1) and 50-55 wk (group2)] because it is known that increasing agedecreases a muscle fiber's resistance to fatigue. Muscle strips wereisolated from both group 1 and group 2 and directly stimulated (2-mspulse duration, 5-15 V) to produce twitch tensions of 1.3 and 2.1 N/cm2, respectively. At lowconcentrations, doxapram (20 µg/ml) and almitrine (12 µg/ml)had no effect on twitch contraction or 100-Hz tetanic tension. However,40 µg/ml doxapram and 30 µg/ml almitrine increased twitch tensionby 9.0 ± 1.4 and 11.6 ± 1.9%, respectively, in animals ofgroup 2 (n = 5). A fatigue protocol consistingof low-frequency stimulation (30-Hz trains, 250-ms duration every 2 sfor 5 min) caused a reduction of twitch tension in animals ofgroup 1 (48 ± 4% ofcontrol) and group 2 (28 ± 4% ofcontrol). At 90 min postfatigue, the twitch tension recovered to 72 ± 3 and 42 ± 2% of control values ingroup 1 and group2, respectively. In the presence of doxapram (20 µg/ml), there was a significant increase in the recovery of twitchtension at 90 min in group 1 andgroup 2 (84.5 ± 3.2 and 80.1 ± 2.8%, respectively) compared with controls at 90 min postfatigue. Inthe presence of almitrine (12 µg/ml), there was a full recovery fromfatigue in group 1 animals (100% ofcontrol) and a recovery to 95.6 ± 2.1% of control ingroup 2 animals at 90 min. Theseresults demonstrate a significant improvement in the rapidity andmagnitude of recovery from fatigue in the rat diaphragm muscle in thepresence of both doxapram and, especially, almitrine. These effects maybe due to changes in intracellular calcium, ADP/ATP ratios, or oxygenfree radical scavenging.

The objective of this study was to quantify the functional responsein feeding rate in the various developmental stages of Calanusfinmarchicus to different concentrations of the diatoms Thalassiosiranordenskioeldii and Porosira glacialis, and the haptophyseanPhaeocystis pouchetii. Grazing of copepodite stage I–VC.finmarchicus was measured using two different approaches.Feeding rates were obtained from either incubation experiments, estimating the rate of removal of particles from suspension,or by quantifying the turnover rate of the plant pigments inthe gut. Clearance as a function of algal concentration (1–30µg plant pigment 1–1) was described in juvenilestages of C.finmarchicus fed the diatoms T.nordenskioeldii [20µm equivalent spherical diameter (ESD)], P.glacialis (40µm ESD), and two size categories (30–100 µmand >100 µm ESD) of the gelatinous alga P.pouchetii.When the copepodite stages were fed T.nordenskioeldii, the gutcontent of plant pigments was in general higher than when fedP.glacialis. Rates obtained were variable when the same copepoditestages were offered the two size categories of P.pouchetii, but within the same order of magnitude as those obtained forthe larger diatom. At unialgal diets, diatoms were more readilyconsumed than the larger size fraction among colonies of P.pouchetiiby copepodite stage I–III C.finmarchicus. But given anappropriate prey size, C.finmarchicus grazed both diatoms andcolonies of gelatinous algae at equal rates. A linear relationshipbetween gut content and food concentrations <10 µgchlorophyll 1–1 was found. This indicates that the ingestionrate in C.finmarchicus is directly proportional to the ambientfood concentration during the most productive period in Mayand June in high latitudes irrespective of algal species present. 1Present address: Marine Biological Laboratory, University ofCopenhagen, Strandpromenaden 5, DK-3000 Helsingør, Denmark 2Present address: Greater Copenhagen Council, Gl. A strain of the marine rotifer Synchaeta cecilia valentina,n. subsp., isolated from the Hondo of Elche Spanish Mediterraneancoastal lagoon at 22 salinity, was cultured in the laboratoryin 20 ml test tubes and fed with the alga Tetrasemis suecica. The effect of two temperatures (20 and 24°C), four salinities(20,25,30 and 37) and two food levels (15 000 and 25000 cellsml–1) on the life history traits of this rotifer werestudied in life tables performed with replicated individualcultures. Temperature and salinity had a significant negativeeffect (P < 0.001) on the average lifespan (LS) and on thenumber of offspring per female (R0) The effect of food levelon LS is unclear, whereas R0 is greater at 20°C with thelower concentration of algae and at 24°C with the higheralgal concentration. The maximum values of LS and R0, 5.6 daysand 9.2 offspring per female, respectively, were recorded at20°C, 25o salinity and low food concentration. There isalso a clear negative effect on the intrinsic growth rate (r)due to salinity. The effect of temperature depends on the foodlevel and, as occurs with R0 the maximum values of r occur withthe lower algal concentration at 20°C, whereas at 24°Cthey are obtained with the higher algal concentration. Theser values, from 1.04 to 1.10 day–1, were reached at 24°C,salinities of 20–25 and with high food concentration.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of seston food quality and quantity were measuredin subalpine Castle Lake for particulate carbon, chlorophylla, fatty acids and phosphorus in addition to abiotic parametersincluding water temperature and dissolved oxygen levels. Fieldand laboratory incubation experiments were employed to manipulateDaphnia rosea growth environments. Sestonic eicosapentaenoicacid (EPA) content was much lower, whereas carbon to phosphorus(C:P) ratios were much higher in the epilimnion compared tothe deep-water chlorophyll maximum (16–20 m). In a temperature-controlledincubation, Daphnia grew faster when fed seston from the deep-waterchlorophyll maximum. In in situ cage incubations, D. rosea grewfastest in the epilimnion. Daphnia rosea in a migrating treatmentexhibited intermediate growth rates between the ones for epilimnionand hypolimnion. A projection of D. rosea growth rates by growthmodels without regard to water temperature showed much highergrowth potentials in the hypolimnion. However, with inclusionof water temperature, epilimnetic water always gave higher potentialgrowth rates. In this lake, warmer temperatures of epilimneticwater override the higher food quality and quantity providedby the deep-water chlorophyll maximum.  相似文献

Seasonal dynamics in elemental composition [carbon (C), nitrogenand phosphorus (P)] of seston and zooplankton were studied overseveral years in three hypereutrophic Dutch lakes with persistentdominance and high biomass of cyanobacteria. In all three lakes, there was a strong pattern with decreased P-content and increasedC:P ratio in seston (<150 µm) coinciding with the increasein water temperature. The seston C:P ratios (at:at) were morethan doubled with the rising temperature, i.e. from 200 (at:at)in winter to 500 in summer. Sestonic C:P ratios increased overthe growing season, suggesting that seasonal dynamics amongautotrophs with high P-uptake in winter and support of subsequentphytoplankton growth by consumption of internal cellular P (P-quota)was the main cause of low sestonic P contents in late summer. This could, however, occur in concert with a physiologicallydriven decrease in cell-specific P at higher temperatures insummer. In contrast, the annual variation of C:P ratios of thezooplankton fraction was only 10% of that of seston. The variationsof C:P ratios of the zooplankton were, nevertheless, stronglycorrelated with those of seston. For most of the summer, sestonC:P ratios were far above the threshold ratio for P-limitationin Daphnia and other P-demanding species. This will pose furtherconstraints on growth performance of Daphnia in these lakes, thus adding to the fish predation pressure and the poor foodquality of cyanobacteria per se. The low grazing pressure causesa high biomass of low-quality autotrophs, promoting a stablestate with low trophic transfer efficiency.  相似文献

Hypohydration and thermoregulation in cold air   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
O'Brien, Catherine, Andrew J. Young, and Michael N. Sawka.Hypohydration and thermoregulation in cold air.J. Appl. Physiol. 84(1): 185-189, 1998.This study examined the effects of hypohydration onthermoregulation during cold exposure. In addition, the independentinfluences of hypohydration-associated hypertonicity and hypovolemiawere investigated. Nine male volunteers were monitored for 30 min at25°C, then for 120 min at 7°C, under three counterbalancedconditions: euhydration (Eu), hypertonic hypohydration (HH), andisotonic hypohydration (IH). Hypohydration was achieved 12 h beforecold exposure by inducing sweating (HH) or by ingestion of furosemide(IH). Body weight decrease (4.1 ± 0.2%) caused by hypohydrationwas similar for HH and IH, but differences(P < 0.05) were found between HH andIH in plasma osmolality (292 ± 1 vs. 284 ± 1 mosmol/kgH2O) andplasma volume reduction (8 ± 2 vs. 18 ± 3%).Heat debt (349 ± 14 among) did not differ(P > 0.05) among trials. Mean skintemperature decreased throughout cold exposure during Eu but plateauedafter 90 min during HH and IH. Forearm-fingertemperature gradient tended (P = 0.06)to be greater during Eu (10.0 ± 0.7°C) than during HH or IH(8.9 ± 0.7°C). This suggests weaker vasoconstrictor tone duringhypohydration than during Eu. Final mean skin temperature was higherfor HH than for Eu or IH (23.5 ± 0.3, 22.6 ± 0.4, and 22.9 ± 0.3°C, respectively), and insulation was lower on HH than onIH (0.13 ± 0.01 vs. 0.15 ± 0.01°C · W1 · m2,respectively), but not with Eu (0.14 ± 0.01°C · W1 · m2).This provides some evidence that hypertonicity impairs the vasoconstrictor response to cold. Although mild hypohydration did notaffect body heat balance during 2-h whole body exposure to moderatecold, hypohydration-associated hypertonicity may have subtle effects onvasoconstriction that could become important during a more severe coldexposure.

Effects of nandrolone decanoate on respiratory and peripheral muscles in male and female rats. J. Appl.Physiol. 82(4): 1112-1118, 1997.Thirty maleand 18 female adult rats received weekly an intramuscular injection ofeither saline (control; C), 1.5 mg/kg (low-dose; LD) nandrolonedecanoate or 7.5 mg/kg (high-dose; HD) nandrolone decanoate during 5 wk. Compared with respective C, growth rate was stunted in male HD ratsfrom 2 wk of treatment on, whereas it was enhanced in female LD and HDrats after 1 wk. Mass of all muscles studied varied proportionally tobody weight, except for the gastrocnemius (males: 0.49 ± 0.04 vs. C: 0.52 ± 0.03%, not significant; females: 0.17 ± 0.01 vs. C: 0.15 ± 0.01%, P < 0.05). In vitro contractile andfatigue properties of the diaphragm remained unchanged, except for adecrease in twitch kinetics (time to peak tension: C, 21 ± 2; LD,19 ± 1; HD, 19 ± 2 ms, P < 0.05; half-relaxation time: C, 26 ± 5, LD, 25 ± 5, HD, 23 ± 3 ms, P < 0.01).Histochemistry of the diaphragm and the gastrocnemius revealed asignificant increase in type IIx/b dimensions. In the gastrocnemius, type I fiber dimensions also increased. A pair-fed study, includinganother 24 female rats, showed that the changes in oral food intakeonly partly accounted for the observed anabolic effects.

J. Appl.Physiol. 81(5): 1958-1964, 1996.We studiedpressure-flow relationships in the supraglottic airway of eight pronemouth-open anesthetized (intravenous chloralose or pentobarbitalsodium) crossbred dogs (weight 15-26 kg) during increasingrespiratory drive (CO2administration; n = 4) and duringgraded-voltage electrical stimulation (SV;n = 4) of the soft palate muscles.During increased respiratory drive, inspiratory airflow occurred viaboth the nose (n) and mouth(m), with the ratio of n tom[%(n/m)]decreasing maximally from 16.0 ± 7.0 (SD) to 2.4 ± 1.6%(P < 0.05). Simultaneously, oralairway resistance at peak inspiratory flow decreased from 2.1 ± 1.0 to 0.4 ± 0.4 cmH2O(P < 0.05), whereas nasal airway resistance did not change (14.4 ± 7.2 to 13.1 ± 5.4 cmH2O;P = 0.29). Inspiratory pressure-flowplots of the oral airway were inversely curvilinear or more complex innature. Nasal pathway plots, however, demonstrated a positive linearrelationship in all animals (r = 0.87 ± 0.11; all P < 0.001). Duringelectrical stimulation of soft palate muscle contraction accompanied bygraded constant-inspiratory airflows of 45-385 ml/s through anisolated upper airway, %(n/m)decreased from 69 ± 50 to 10 ± 13% at a SV of 84 ± 3% ofmaximal SV (P < 0.001). At a SV of85 ± 1% of maximum, normalized oral airway resistance (expressedas percent baseline) fell to 5 ± 3%, whereas normalized nasalresistance was 80 ± 9% (both P < 0.03). Thus control of oronasal airflow partitioning in dogsappears mediated more by alterations in oral route geometry than byclosure of the nasopharyngeal airway.

Zooplankton egg production and nutritional status as relatedto environmental factors were studied in a humic lake. Bothparameters exhibited a pronounced spring peak, a mid-summerdepression and a second, smaller autumnal peak. The overallmacrozooplankton community apparently suffered from severe foodlimitation, particularly with regard to food quality, duringthe study period. This limitation was confirmed with length/carbonregressions of well-fed and starved laboratory individuals ofDaphnia. Body carbon in the lake animals corresponded to thatof laboratory-raised, starved individuals. Regression analysisindicated that bacteria, particulate organic carbon and particulatenitrogen best explained changes in egg production, while algalbiomass was of negligible importance for all species. For Daphnia,size-specific carbon content (length/carbon regressions) andC/N ratios were computed for all sampling dates. a and b fromthe equation W=aLb were positively correlated (P=0.001). a rangedover 1.17–4.44 and was positively correlated with size-specificcarbon content (P<0.001) and the C/N ratio (P=0.01). Whena mean time lag of 12 days was introduced, a was positivelycorrelated with egg production (P=0.04.6). b ranged over 2.05–3.54and was inversely correlated to the same parameters. Both simpleand multiple regression analysis confirmed that bacteria, particulateorganic carbon and particulate nitrogen gave the major positivecontribution to variance in size-specific C content, a and C/Nratio in Daphnia, whereas total zooplankton biomass was themain negative contributor to the same parameters.  相似文献

Dehydration and hyperthermia may impair gastricemptying (GE) during exercise; the effect of these alterations onintestinal water flux (WF) is unknown. Thus the purpose of this studywas to determine the effect of hypohydration (~2.7% body weight) on GE and WF of a water placebo (WP) during cycling exercise (85 min, 65%maximal oxygen uptake) in a cool environment (22°C) and to alsocompare GE and WF of three carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions (CES)while the subjects were hypohydrated. GE and WF were determined simultaneously by a nasogastric tube placed in the gastric antrum andvia a multilumen tube that spanned the duodenum and the first 25 cm ofjejunum. Hypohydration was attained 12-16 h before experiments bylow-intensity exercise in a hot (45°C), humid (relative humidity 50%) environment. Seven healthy subjects (age 26.7 ± 1.7 yr,maximal oxygen uptake 55.9 ± 8.2 ml · kg1 · min1)ingested either WP or a 6% (330 mosmol), 8% (400 mosmol), or a 9%(590 mosmol) CES the morning following hypohydration. For comparison, subjects ingested WP after a euhydration protocol. Solutions (~2.0liters total) were ingested as a large bolus (4.6 ml/kg body wt) 5 minbefore exercise and as small serial feedings (2.3 ml/kg body wt) every10 min of exercise. Average GE rates were not different amongconditions (P > 0.05). Mean(±SE) values for WF were also similar(P > 0.05) for the euhydration (15.3 ± 1.7 ml · cm1 · h1)and hypohydration (18.3 ± 2.6 ml · cm1 · h1)experiments. During exercise after hypohydration, waterabsorption was greater (P < 0.05)with ingestion of WP (18.3 ± 2.6) and the 6% CES (16.5 ± 3.7),compared with the 8% CES (6.9 ± 1.5) and the 9% CES (1.8 ± 1.7). Mean values for final core temperature (38.6 ± 0.1°C),heart rate (152 ± 1 beats/min), and change in plasma volume(5.7 ± 0.7%) were similar among experimental trials. Weconclude that 1) hypohydration to~3% body weight does not impair GE or fluid absorption duringmoderate exercise when ingesting WP, and2) hyperosmolality (>400 mosmol)reduced WF in the proximal intestine.

A midsummer decline in a Daphnia population has been documentedin Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, USA, similar to that which typicallyoccurs in other freshwater lakes throughout the world. We investigatedthe role of two products of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa(microcystin and polysaccharide capsular matrix) in contributingto this population decrease by utilizing laboratory and lakestudies. Feeding on either the microcystin-producing, minimallyencapsulated M. aeruginosa strain PCC 7820 or the highly encapsulated,non-microcystin-producing strain C3-40, resulted in decreasedsurvival when compared with animals fed chlorophytes. The survivorshipof Daphnia fed C3-40 cells washed to remove the capsule increasedby 30% over that seen in animals fed encapsulated C3-40. Feedingpurified microcystin or capsule alone decreased Daphnia survivalto a greater degree than did starvation. Physiological studiesconducted while Daphnia were exposed to these food sources showedthat ingestion of capsular material resulted in increased post-abdominalclaw movements and decreased mandibular movements. Concurrently, elevated respiration rates were measured in Daphnia, implyingthat capsule increased the energy expended by these animalsthrough increased attempts to reject the material and decreasedfood intake. Lake studies reflected the results of the laboratoryexperiments. The midsummer decline of the Daphnia populationoccurs as the Microcystis biovolume increases and both microcystinand capsular matrix levels rise. While both cyanobacterial productsmay contribute to the midsummer decline in Daphnia pulicaria, laboratory studies suggest that encapsulation may play the greaterrole.  相似文献
