In West Africa, Trichinella infection was documented in humans and animals from Senegal in the 1960s, and the biological characters of one isolate showed a lower infectivity to domestic pigs and rodents when compared with that of a Trichinella spiralis pig isolate from Europe. To identify the Trichinella species present in West Africa, a survey was conducted in a total of 160 wild animals in the Republic of Guinea. Three Viverridae, one true civet (Viverra civetta) and two African palm civets (Nandinia binotata) from the Fouta Djallon Massif, Pilimini Subprefecture, were found positive by artificial digestion of muscle samples. Trichinella larvae from these three viverrids were identified as Trichinella britovi and no difference was detected in three examined sequences from these African isolates and the reference strain of T. britovi from Europe, indicating common ancestry, an historically continuous geographic distribution, and recent isolation for African and European populations. The detection of T. britovi in West Africa modifies our knowledge about the distribution of encapsulated species of Trichinella in Africa. Thus, Trichinella nelsoni is now considered to have a distribution limited to the Eastern part of the Afrotropical region from Kenya to South Africa. This provides a plausible explanation for the presence of Trichinella T8 in Namibia and South Africa, and further suggests that T. britovi could be the Trichinella species circulating among wild animals of Northern Africa.  相似文献

Of 17 Trichinella isolates from domestic pigs and wild boars (Sus scrofa) in regions where Trichinella nativa is widespread among sylvatic animals, two wild boars from Estonia were found to be naturally infected with this Trichinella species. The other 15 animals were infected with Trichinella spiralis. Trichinella nativa is tolerant to freezing when in the muscles of carnivores. The biological characteristics and temperature tolerance of this species in swine need to be further investigated if pork is certified for consumption following freezing.  相似文献

Encapsulated and non-encapsulated species of the genus Trichinella are widespread in sylvatic animals in almost all zoogeographical regions. In sylvatic animals from Tasmania (Australian region), only the non-encapsulated species Trichinella pseudospiralis has been reported. Between 1988 and 1998, non-encapsulated larvae of Trichinella were detected in five domestic pigs and six wild boars from a remote area of Papua New Guinea. Morphological, biological, and molecular studies carried out on one strain isolated from a wild boar in 1997 suggest that these parasites belong to a new species, which has been named Trichinella papuae n.sp. This species can be identified by the morphology of muscle larvae, which lack a nurse cell in host muscles, and whose total length is one-third greater than that of the other non-encapsulated species, T. pseudospiralis. Adults of T. papuae do not cross with adults of the other species and genotypes. Muscle larvae of T. papuae are unable to infect birds, whereas those of T. pseudospiralis do. The expansion segment V of the large subunit of the ribosomal DNA differs from that of the other species and genotypes. All of these features allow for the easy identification of T. papuae, even in poorly equipped laboratories. The discovery and identification of a second non-encapsulated species in the Australian region strongly supports the existence of two evolutionary lines in the genus Trichinella, which differ in terms of the capacity of larvae to induce a modification of the muscle cell into a nurse cell.  相似文献

The fungal genus Neurospora has a distinguished history as a laboratory model in genetics and biochemistry. The most recent milestone in this history has been the sequencing of the genome of the best known species, N. crassa. The hope and promise of a complete genome sequence is a full understanding of the biology of the organism. Full understanding cannot be achieved, however, in the absence of fundamental knowledge of natural history. We report that species of Neurospora, heretofore thought to occur mainly in moist tropical and subtropical regions, are common primary colonizers of trees and shrubs killed by forest fires in western North America, in regions that are often cold and dry. Surveys in 36 forest-fire sites from New Mexico to Alaska yielded more than 500 cultures, 95% of which were the rarely collected N. discreta. Initial characterization of genotypes both within a site and on a single tree showed diversity consistent with sexual reproduction of N. discreta. These discoveries fill important gaps in knowledge of the distribution of members of the genus on both large and small spatial scales and provide the framework for future studies in new regions and microhabitats. The overall result is that population biology and genetics now can be combined, placing the genus Neurospora in a unique position to expand its role in experimental biology as a useful model organism for ecology, population genetics and evolution.  相似文献

A new species of the genus Stylodrilus is described from phreatic waters in California, North America. Tubular atria with bulbous penes and spermathecae with broad and short ducts characterize the new species. The habitat of Stylodrilus californianus n. sp., confirms that the distribution of the genus Stylodrilus in the Neartic biogeographical zone is mainly associated with subterranean waters.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Eimeria aurati n. sp. is described from the intestine of the goldfish, Carassius auratus , from Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Oocysts were very numerous in long, whitish, opaque fecal casts. A new cestode species, Diphyllobothrium klebanovskii sp. n., is described on the basis of experimental examination and morphological study of 51 specimens expelled from men in lower part of the Amur river and 18 specimens expelled from golden hamsters. The larval stage of this cestode is plerocercoid of type F, which is localized in muscles of Oncorhynchus keta and O. gorbuscha. D. klebanovskii sp. n. is a marine species, it differs from D. latum and other species of the genus Diphyllobothrium.  相似文献

Isolates of the nematode genus Trichinella from sylvatic hosts differ in their potential to reproduce in domestic swine. The structure of the genomic DNA from 13 sylvatic isolates from North America and 5 pig isolates, 4 from North America and 1 from Asia, was examined and correlated with the infectivity of the isolate for domestic pigs. DNA restriction fragment length differences, identified by ethidium bromide staining and by hybridization with 32P-labeled ribosomal RNA, served as molecular markers to classify each isolate. All 5 pig isolates and 8 of 13 sylvatic isolates had a high infectivity and reproductive capacity in pigs. All isolates that were highly infectious for pigs regardless of host origin had similar DNA characteristics and were classified operationally as T. spiralis spiralis (pig) and those of the second group as T. spiralis ssp. A DNA clone of repetitive DNA from T. s. spiralis, pBP2, was selected from a library of genomic DNA in plasmid pUC8. When used as a probe, pBP2 hybridized only to the DNA of T. s. spiralis isolates, thus making it a useful diagnostic reagent to predict whether new isolates are highly infectious for pigs (i.e., T. s. spiralis). These results show that T. s. spiralis occurs in wild mammals and this should be considered a serious obstacle to efforts to eradicate trichinellosis from domestic swine.  相似文献

We propose the name Rickettsia japonica sp. nov. (with type strain YH [= ATCC VR-1363]) for a serologically specific species of spotted fever group rickettsiae that are pathogenic for humans (J. Infect. Dis. 159:1122-1126, 1989; J. Clin. Microbiol. 28:1177-1180, 1990). The biologic and genomic characteristics of the organism (G+C content, 31.2 +/- 0.7 mol%) are essentially the same as those of other pathogenic spotted fever group rickettsiae, although the R. japonica isolates cause a persistent infection in Vero cells for many subcultures.  相似文献

Abstract Identification of biodiversity hotspots is essential to conservation strategies aimed at minimizing the possibility of losing half of the world's species in the next 50 years. The aims of the present study were: (i) to locate and designate zones of endemism in the temperate forest of South America; and (ii) to compare the distribution of these areas with the distribution of existing protected areas in this habitat type. Endemism areas were determined by using parsimonious analysis of endemism, which identified zones of endemism on the basis of sets of endemic species that were restricted to two or more study areas. We used distribution information for five unrelated taxa (ferns, trees, reptiles, birds and mammals) to provide more reliable results and patterns than would work with only a single taxon or related taxa. The northern part of this region has high endemism for all of the taxa considered in this study. We demonstrate that although the temperate forest of South America has more than 30% of its area under some type of protection, correlation between protected areas and the areas of endemism is remarkably low. In fact, less than 10% of protected areas are situated in areas that have the greatest value for conservation (i.e. high endemism). Under the current strategy, biodiversity within South America's temperate forest is in danger despite the large amount of protected area for this forest type.  相似文献
