Carbon stable isotopes (??13C) of particulate organic matter (POM) are useful indicators for tracking the sources of organic matter, CO2 concentrations, primary productivity and the trophic base in lakes. Here we provide a synthesis of literature data from 228 lakes around the world to assess the distribution pattern of ??13CPOM along latitudinal, morphometric and biogeochemical gradients, and the feasibility of utilizing ??13CPOM as an indicator for lake metabolism. Results from this analysis revealed a large variation in ??13CPOM among lakes with a range from ?46.2 to ?13.0?? and a median of ?29.7??. The ??13CPOM generally decreased from low to high latitude along with the decreases in total phosphorus (TP), pH, lake size and the increases in partial pressure of CO2. The combination of these factors may play a significant role in shaping the pattern of ??13CPOM distribution. A multiple regression model using matching data (n?=?92 lakes) indicated that latitude, lake size and TP concentration were the important factors determining ??13CPOM, although only 25% of the variance in ??13CPOM was explained by the model. Compared to the average ??13C value (?27??) of terrestrial plants, 165 lakes (72%) in this analysis were isotopically depleted in ??13CPOM, with a mean of ?31.5??, which is indicative of an allochthonous contribution of terrestrial organic matter. This finding is consistent with the view that the majority of lakes in the world receive a terrestrial subsidy of carbon and are sources of CO2 to the atmosphere.  相似文献

Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) can be used to provide a baseline stable isotope signature, time-integrated with primary production. However, since zebra mussels are uncommon in pelagic zones, their potential as reference species in pelagic water columns has not been fully explored. By investigating mussels growing suspended on a single vertical cable in Lake Constance, we were able to document seasonal (April, May, and August) and depth-dependent (0–22 m) variation in mussel δ 15Ν and δ 13C. We found a strong correlation between temperature and mussel δ 15N from differing depths; and a strong relationship between temperature and Δ15Ν (estimated as δ 15Νmussel ? δ 15ΝPOM) and Δ13C (δ 13Cmussel ? δ 13CPOM). In a pattern that remained consistent over all months, Δ15Ν decreased with temperature, to the extent that negative values were recorded at temperatures >13°C. Utilizing cable-dwelling pelagic mussels as indicators of variation in isotope and temperature for pelagic water could be used as a novel field approach, comparable to in situ experimentation. We suggest that the pelagic mussel approach can be employed in tandem with benthic or littoral mussel isotope values, to develop mussel-based lake isoscapes. Such isoscapes may be pertinent to the study of seasonal trophic limnoecology and in tracking the movements of animals.  相似文献

In this study, components of the food-web in Macao wetlands were quantified using stable isotope ratio techniques based on carbon and nitrogen values. The δ13C and δ15N values of particulate organic matter (δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM, respectively) ranged from ?30.64 ± 1.0 to ?28.1 ± 0.7 ‰, and from ?1.11 ± 0.8 to 3.98 ± 0.7 ‰, respectively. The δ13C values of consumer species ranged from ?33.94 to ?16.92 ‰, showing a wide range from lower values in a freshwater lake and inner bay to higher values in a mangrove forest. The distinct dietary habits of consumer species and the location-specific food source composition were the main factors affecting the δ13C values. The consumer 15N-isotope enrichment values suggested that there were three trophic levels; primary, secondary, and tertiary. The primary consumer trophic level was represented by freshwater herbivorous gastropods, filter-feeding bivalves, and plankton-feeding fish, with a mean δ15N value of 5.052 ‰. The secondary consumer level included four deposit-feeding fish species distributed in Fai Chi Kei Bay and deposit-feeding gastropods in the Lotus Flower Bridge flat, with a mean δ15N value of 6.794 ‰. The tertiary consumers group consisted of four crab species, one shrimp species, and four fish species in the Lotus Flower Bridge Flat, with a mean δ15N value of 13.473 ‰. Their diet mainly comprised organic debris, bottom fauna, and rotten animal tissues. This study confirms the applicability of the isotopic approach in food web studies.  相似文献

Cyclopoids were collected from 18 reservoirs in southern China during August (a wet month) and December (a dry month) of 2010 for the analysis of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13CZoo and δ15NZoo). The objectives of this study were to examine whether δ13CZoo and δ15NZoo can be better indicators of primary productivity and trophic state than the stable isotope composition of suspended particulate organic matter (POM), and to evaluate the relationship between δ13CZoo and δ15NZoo and select environmental variables. The δ13CZoo in these reservoirs was enriched in August and depleted in December, and varied significantly along the continuum of trophic levels. By contrast, δ15NZoo was depleted in August and enriched in December, and did not increase significantly with an increase in trophic state. Both δ13CZoo and δ15NZoo were more strongly correlated with environmental factors than δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM were. In addition, more environmental factors were significantly correlated with δ13CZoo and the δ15NZoo than with δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM. When data from two seasons were pooled, δ13CZoo was strongly correlated with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and the DIN:SRP ratio, while δ15NZoo was weakly correlated with nutrient concentrations. This study indicates that, compared to the stable isotope composition of POM, δ13CZoo is a better indicator of primary productivity and trophic state, while δ15NZoo may be used as a proxy for nitrogen sources in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Using bulk tissue and fatty acid 13C analysis we investigated major trophic pathways from soil microorganisms to microbial consumers to predators in conventional versus organic farming systems planted for the first time with maize. Organic farming led to an increase in microbial biomass in particular that of fungi as indicated by phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs). Microbial PLFAs reflected the conversion from C3 to C4 plants by a shift in δ13C of 2‰, whereas the isotopic signal in fatty acids (FAs) of Collembola was much more pronounced. In the euedaphic Protaphorura fimata the δ13C values in maize fields exceeded that in C3 (soybean) fields by up to 10‰, indicating a close relationship between diet and vegetation cover. In the epedaphic Orchesella villosaδ13C values shifted by 4‰, suggesting a wider food spectrum including carbon of former C3 crop residues. Differences in δ13C of corresponding FAs in consumers and resources were assessed to assign food web links. P. fimata was suggested as root and fungal feeder in soybean fields, fungal feeder in conventional and leaf consumer in organically managed maize fields. O. villosa likely fed on root and bacteria under soybean, and bacteria and fungi under maize. Comparison of δ13C values in FAs of the cursorial spider Pardosaagrestis and O. villosa implied the latter as important prey species in soybean fields. In contrast, the web‐building spider Mangora acalypha showed no predator–prey relationship with Collembola. The determination of δ13C values in trophic biomarker FAs allowed detailed insight into the structure of the decomposer food web and identified diet‐shifts in both consumers at the base of the food web and in top predators in organic versus conventional agricultural systems. The results indicate changes in major trophic links and therefore carbon flux through the food web by conversion of conventional into organic farming systems.  相似文献

Carbon stable isotopes (δ13C) of particulate organic matter (POM) have been used as indicators for energy flow, primary productivity and carbon dioxide concentration in individual lakes. Here, we provide a synthesis of literature data from 32 freshwater lakes around the world to assess the variability of δ13CPOM along latitudinal, morphometric and biogeochemical gradients. Seasonal mean δ13CPOM, a temporally integrated measure of the δ13CPOM, displayed weak relationships with all trophic state indices [total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll a (Chl a)], but decreased significantly with the increase in latitude, presumably in response to the corresponding decrease in water temperature and increase in CO2 concentration. The seasonal minimum δ13CPOM also correlated negatively with latitude while seasonal maximum δ13CPOM correlated positively with all trophic state indices, pH, and δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Seasonal amplitude of δ13CPOM (the difference between seasonal maximum and minimum values) correlated significantly with pH, TP and Chl a concentrations and displayed small variations in oligotrophic, mesotrophic and low latitude eutrophic lakes, which is attributed to low primary productivity and abundant non-living POM in the low trophic state lakes and relatively stable environmental conditions in the subtropics. Seasonal amplitude of δ13CPOM was the greatest in high latitude eutrophic lakes. Greater seasonal changes in solar energy and light regime may be responsible for the large seasonal variability in high latitude productive lakes. This synthesis provides new insights on the factors controlling variations in stable carbon isotopes of POM among lakes on the global scale.  相似文献

The farming of shrimp is developing quickly worldwide, and recently, ingredients such as seaweeds in low proportion (25 to 4 %), incorporated into the commercial food, have been shown to improve the shrimp productive variables. The change of commercial foods to commercial feed with a proportion of natural food, and finally, to natural food has been little and simultaneously evaluated. The aim of our study was to determine the relative contribution of dietary carbon to the growth of Litopenaeus vannamei fed with a proportion of 4 % Sargassum13C = ?20.9?±?0.05?‰), 4 % Ulva13C = ?20.6?±?0.6?‰) meal, and a control diet (δ13C?=??22.6?±?0.2?‰) in 60-L tanks for 30 days, and finally, with the green seaweed Ulva spp. (δ13C = ?13.2?±?0.25?‰) and Ulva meal (δ13C = ?14.5?±?0.6?‰) in open-air ponds for 120 days, by measuring δ13C for each of the foods and in the muscle of shrimp. After 15 days, the rates of metabolic turnover (Δ13C = δ13Cshrimp ? δ13Cfood) were constant until the end of the experiment in the tanks. The muscle of shrimp assimilated carbon from all diets, which demonstrated the potential use of combined diets and the optimization of their use in diets containing seaweed. Our data will be useful in future interpretations of field and laboratory isotopic values for this species.  相似文献

The flowers of 23 species of grass and herb plants were collected from a mesotrophic grassland to assess natural variability in bulk, monosaccharide and fatty acid δ13C values from one plant community and were compared with previous analyses of leaves from the same species. The total mean bulk δ13C value of flower tissues was −28.1‰, and there was no significant difference between the mean δ13Cflower values for grass (−27.8‰) and herb (−28.2‰) species. On average bulk δ13Cflower values were 1.1‰ higher than bulk δ13Cleaf values, however, the δ13Cflower and δ13Cleaf values of grasses did not differ between organs suggesting that carbon isotope discrimination is different in grass and herb species. The abundance of different monosaccharides abundance varied between plant types, i.e. xylose concentrations in the grass flowers were as high as 40%, compared with up to 15% in the herb species, but the general relationship δ13Carabinose > δ13Cxylose > δ13Cglucose > δ13Cgalactose which had been observed in leaves was similar in flowers (total mean δ13C values = −25.9‰, −27.2‰, −28.8‰ and −28.1‰, respectively). However, the average 5.4‰ depletion in the δ13C values of the C16:0, C18:2 and C18:3 fatty acids in flowers compared to bulk tissue was significantly greater than observed for leaves. The trend C16:0 < C18:2 < C18:3 previously observed in leaves was also observed in grass flowers (δ13CC16:0 = −33.8‰; δ13CC18:2 = −33.1‰; δ13CC18:3 = −34.2‰) but not herb flowers (δ13CC16:0 = −34.1‰; δ13CC18:2 = −32.4‰; δ13CC18:3 = −34.5‰). We conclude: (i) that the biological processes influencing carbon isotope discrimination in grass flowers are different from herbs flowers; and, (ii) that a range of post-photosynthetic fractionation effects caused the observed differences between flower and leaf δ13C values, especially the significant 13C-depletion in flower fatty acid δ13C values.  相似文献

Although microorganisms are the primary drivers of biogeochemical cycles, the structure and functioning of microbial food webs are poorly studied. This is the case in Sphagnum peatlands, where microbial communities play a key role in the global carbon cycle. Here, we explored the structure of the microbial food web from a Sphagnum peatland by analyzing (1) the density and biomass of different microbial functional groups, (2) the natural stable isotope (δ 13C and δ 15N) signatures of key microbial consumers (testate amoebae), and (3) the digestive vacuole contents of Hyalosphenia papilio, the dominant testate amoeba species in our system. Our results showed that the feeding type of testate amoeba species (bacterivory, algivory, or both) translates into their trophic position as assessed by isotopic signatures. Our study further demonstrates, for H. papilio, the energetic benefits of mixotrophy when the density of its preferential prey is low. Overall, our results show that testate amoebae occupy different trophic levels within the microbial food web, depending on their feeding behavior, the density of their food resources, and their metabolism (i.e., mixotrophy vs. heterotrophy). Combined analyses of predation, community structure, and stable isotopes now allow the structure of microbial food webs to be more completely described, which should lead to improved models of microbial community function.  相似文献

Particulate organic matter transported from rivers to estuaries (POMR) varies quantitatively and qualitatively across estuaries; however, a lack of comparative studies poses a challenge in general understanding of responses of estuarine food webs to POMR input. We studied 20 estuarine tidal flats of the Pacific Northwest coast of North America, with watershed areas ranging from 7 to 8000 km2. We used carbon-stable isotope (δ13C) to test the hypothesis that the nutritional contribution of POMR to macrobenthos is proportional to relative abundances of POMR in tidal flat sediments. The predominant origin of total POM (TPOM) in tidal flat sediments generally shifted from marine-origin POM (POMM) to POMR as watershed area increased; however, terrestrial-origin POMR with high C/N predominated sediment TPOM even in estuaries with small watershed areas. Some macrobenthos species assimilated POM sources in proportion to sediment TPOM composition, and incorporated POMR in POMR-predominant sediments. These species were considered to have low food selectivity; however, the relative nutritional contribution of POMR to these macrobenthos was still lower than the fraction of POMR in sediment TPOM. Other species disproportionately utilized POMM and/or benthic microalgae regardless of the relative abundance of POMR, indicating their high food selectivity. The species-specific, low- or high-food selectivity was likely linked with deposit-feeding and filter-feeding, respectively. Hence, our hypothesis was supported conditionally. Our findings indicate that watershed area, relative abundance of POMR in an estuary, and food selectivity of estuarine species are key factors controlling the tightness of linkage between watersheds and estuarine food webs.  相似文献

Leaves of 26 grass, herb, shrub and tree species were collected from mesotrophic grasslands to assess natural variability in bulk, fatty acid and monosaccharide δ13C values under different grazing management (cattle- or deer-grazed) on three sample dates (May, July and October) such that interspecific and spatiotemporal variations in whole leaf tissues and compound-specific δ13C values could be determined. The total mean leaf bulk δ13C value for plants was −28.9‰ with a range of values spanning 7.5‰. Significant interspecific variation between bulk leaf δ13C values was only determined in October (P = <0.001) when δ13C values of the leaf tissues from both sites was on average 1.5‰ depleted compared to during July and May. Samples from May were significantly different between fields (P = 0.03) indicating an effect from deer- or cattle-grazing in young leaves. The average individual monosaccharide δ13C value was 0.8‰ higher compared with whole leaf tissues. Monosaccharides were the most abundant components of leaf biomass, i.e. arabinose, xylose, mannose, galactose and glucose, and therefore, fluctuations in their individual δ13C values had a major influence on bulk δ13C values. An average depletion of ca. 1‰ in the bulk δ13C values of leaves from the deer-grazed field compared to the cattle-grazed field could be explained by a general depletion of 1.1‰ in glucose δ13C values, as glucose constituted >50% total leaf monosaccharides. In October, δ13C values of all monosaccharides varied between species, with significant variation in δ13C values of mannose and glucose in July, and mannose in May. This provided an explanation for the noted variability in the tissue bulk δ13C values observed in October 1999. The fatty acids C16:0, C18:2 and C18:3 were highly abundant in all plant species. Fatty acid δ13C values were lower than those of bulk leaf tissues; average values of −37.4‰ (C16:0), −37.0‰ (C18:2) and −36.5‰ (C18:3) were determined. There was significant interspecific variation in the δ13C values of all individual fatty acids during October and July, but only for C18:2 in May (P = <0.05). This indicated that seasonal trends observed in the δ13C values of individual fatty acids were inherited from the isotopic composition of primary photosynthate. However, although wide diversity in δ13C values of grassland plants ascribed to grazing management, interspecific and spatiotemporal influences was revealed, significant trends (P = <0.0001) for fatty acid and monosaccharide δ13C values: δ13C16:0 < δ13C18:2 < δ13C18:3 and δ13Carabinose > δ13Cxylose > δ13Cglucose > δ13Cgalactose, respectively, previously described, appear consistent across a wide range of species at different times of the year in fields under different grazing regimes.  相似文献

The trophodynamics of pelagic and benthic animals of the North Sea, North Atlantic shelf, were assessed using stable isotope analysis (SIA) of natural abundance carbon and nitrogen isotopes, lipid fingerprinting and compound-specific SIA (CSIA) of phospholipid-derived fatty acids (PLFAs). Zooplankton (z), epi- and supra-benthic macrofauna were collected in the Southern Bight, at the Oyster Grounds and at North Dogger, 111 km north of the Dogger Bank. The study included 22 taxonomic groups with particular reference to Mollusca (Bivalvia and Gastropoda) and Crustacea. Primary consumers (Bivalvia) were overall most 15N enriched in the southern North Sea (6.1‰) and more depleted in the Oyster Grounds (5.5‰) and at North Dogger (2.8‰) demonstrating differences in isotopic baselines for bivalve fauna between the study sites. Higher trophic levels also followed this trend. Over an annual cycle, consumers tended to exhibit 15N depletion during spring followed by 15N enriched signatures in autumn and winter. The observed seasonal changes of δ 15N were more pronounced for suspension feeders and deposit feeders (dfs) than for filter feeders (ffs). The position of animals in plots of δ 13C and δ 15N largely concurred with the expected position according to literature-based functional feeding groups. PLFA fingerprints of groups such as z were distinct from benthic groups, e.g. benthic ffs and dfs, and predatory macrobenthos. δ 13CPLFA signatures indicated similarities in 13C moiety sources that constituted δ 13CPLFA. Although functional groups of pelagic zooplankton and (supra-) benthic animals represented phylogenetically distinct consumer groups, δ 13CPLFA demonstrated that both groups were supported by pelagic primary production and relied on the same macronutrients such as PLFAs. Errors related to the static categorization of small invertebrates into fixed trophic positions defined by phylogenetic groupings rather than by functional feeding groups, and information on seasonal trophodynamic variability, may have implications for the reliability of numerical marine ecosystem models.  相似文献

Stable isotope analysis has been extensively used as an effective tool in determination of trophic relationship in ecosystems. In freshwater ecosystem, aquatic invertebrates represent main component of a river food web. This study was carried out to determine potential food sources of freshwater organism together with pattern of trophic position along the river food web. In this study, rivers of Belum-Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC) has been selected as sampling site as it is a pristine area that contains high diversity and abundance of organisms and can be a benchmark for other rivers in Malaysia. Stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) were applied to estimate trophic position and food web paradigm. Analysis of stable isotopes based on organic material collected from the study area revealed that the highest δ13C value was reported from filamentous algae (? 22.68 ± 0.1260/00) and the lowest δ13C was in allocthonous leaf packs (? 31.58 ± 0.1870/00). Meanwhile the highest δ15N value was in fish (8.45 ± 0.1770/00) and the lowest value of δ15N was in autochthonous aquatic macrophyte (2.00 ± 1.2340/00). Based on the δ15N results, there are three trophic levels in the study river and it is suggested that the trophic chain begins with organic matter followed by group of insects and ends with fish (organic matter < insects < fish).  相似文献

Methyl bromide (MB) and other alternatives were evaluated for suppression of Fusarium spp., Phytophthora spp., and Meloidogyne spp. and their influence on soil microbial communities. Both Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora spp. were significantly reduced by the MB (30.74 mg kg-1), methyl iodide (MI: 45.58 mg kg-1), metham sodium (MS: 53.92 mg kg-1) treatments. MS exhibited comparable effectiveness to MB in controlling Meloidogyne spp. and total nematodes, followed by MI at the tested rate. By contrast, sulfuryl fluoride (SF: 33.04 mg kg-1) and chloroform (CF: 23.68 mg kg-1) showed low efficacy in controlling Fusarium spp., Phytophthora spp., and Meloidogyne spp. MB, MI and MS significantly lowered the abundance of different microbial populations and microbial biomass in soil, whereas SF and CF had limited influence on them compared with the control. Diversity indices in Biolog studies decreased in response to fumigation, but no significant difference was found among treatments in PLFA studies. Principal component and cluster analyses of Biolog and PLFA data sets revealed that MB and MI treatments greatly influenced the soil microbial community functional and structural diversity compared with SF treatment. These results suggest that fumigants with high effectiveness in suppressing soil-borne disease could significantly influence soil microbial community.  相似文献

Fractionation of δ13C and δ15N between food, consumer, and faecal pellets was studied in the Arctic marine copepod Calanus glacialis Jaschnov, fed with isotopically distinct algal monocultures. Temporal variations in δ13C and δ15N of copepods that were fed ice algae and phytoplankton followed those of a control group consisting of starved animals. There were no significant trends in the δ13C and δ15N values of copepods that were starved for 42 days, suggesting that the isotopic composition of non-lipid body tissues is unaffected by the metabolic processes during prolonged periods of starvation. The stable isotopic composition of starved copepods therefore seems to reflect food consumed during the previous period of feeding and growth. Faecal pellets produced by feeding copepods were depleted in 13C and 15N by 6.3-11.2‰ and 0.7-9.1‰, respectively, relative to the food ingested. These results indicate that faecal pellet production is an important pathway for the trophic fractionation of δ13C, whereas other fractionation pathways, such as excretion of ammonia, may be relatively more important for δ15N. The strong depletion of 13C in faecal pellets compared to the food suggests that grazing by herbivorous copepods on primary production adds to the variability of δ13C in marine particulate organic matter.  相似文献

We sampled the upper water column for living planktic foraminifera along the SW-African continental margin. The species Globorotalia inflata strongly dominates the foraminiferal assemblages with an overall relative abundance of 70–90%. The shell δ18O and δ13C values of G. inflata were measured and compared to the predicted oxygen isotope equilibrium values (δ18Oeq) and to the carbon isotope composition of the total dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) of seawater. The δ18O of G. inflata reflects the general gradient observed in the predicted δ18Oeq profile, while the δ13C of G. inflata shows almost no variation with depth and the reflection of the δ13CDIC in the foraminiferal shell seems to be covered by other effects. We found that offsets between δ18Oshell and predicted δ18Oeq in the surface mixed layer do not correlate to changes in seawater [CO32−].To calculate an isotopic mass balance of depth integrated growth, we used the oxygen isotope composition of G. inflata to estimate the fraction of the total shell mass that is grown within each plankton tow depth interval of the upper 500 m of the water column. This approach allows us to calculate the Δδ13Cinterval added-DIC; i.e. the isotopic composition of calcite that was grown within a given depth interval. Our results consistently show that the Δδ13CIA-DIC correlates negatively with in situ measured [CO32−] of the ambient water. Using this approach, we found Δδ13CIA-DIC/[CO32−] slopes for G. inflata in the large size fraction (250–355 μm) of − 0.013‰ to 0.015‰ (μmol kg 1) 1 and of − 0.013‰ to 0.017‰ (μmol kg 1) 1 for the smaller specimens (150–250 μm). These slopes are in the range of those found for other non-symbiotic species, such as Globigerina bulloides, from laboratory culture experiments. Since the Δδ13CIA-DIC/[CO32−] slopes from our field data are nearly identical to the slopes established from laboratory culture experiments we assume that the influence of other effects, such as temperature, are negligibly small. If we correct the δ13C values of G. inflata for a carbonate ion effect, the δ13Cshell and δ13CDIC are correlated with an average offset of 2.11.  相似文献

Soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics ultimately govern the ability of soil to provide long‐term C sequestration and the nutrients required for ecosystem productivity. Predicting belowground responses to elevated CO2 requires an integrated understanding of SOM transformations and the microbial activity that governs them. It remains unclear how the microorganisms upon which these transformations depend will function in an elevated CO2 world. This study examines SOM transformations and microbial metabolism in soils from the Duke Free Air Carbon Enrichment site in North Carolina, USA. We assessed microbial respiration and net nitrogen (N) mineralization in soils with and without elevated CO2 exposure during a 100‐day incubation. We also traced the depleted C isotopic signature of the supplemental CO2 into SOM and the soils' phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA), which serve as biomarkers for living cells. Cumulative net N mineralization in elevated CO2 soils was 50% that in control soils after a 100‐day incubation. Respiration was not altered with elevated CO2. C : N ratios of bulk SOM did not change with elevated CO2, but incubation data suggest that the C : N ratios of mineralized organic matter increased with elevated CO2. Values of SOM δ13C were depleted with elevated CO2 (?26.7±0.2 vs. ?30.2±0.3‰), reflecting the depleted signature of the supplemental CO2. We compared δ13C of individual PLFA with the δ13C of SOM to discern incorporation of the depleted C isotopic signature into soil microbial groups in elevated CO2 plots. PLFA i15:0, a15:0, and 10Met18:0 reflected significant incorporation of recently produced photosynthate, suggesting that the bacterial groups defined by these biomarkers are active metabolizers in elevated CO2 soils. At least one of these groups (actinomycetes, 10Met18:0) specializes in metabolizing less labile substrates. Because control plots did not receive an equivalent 13C tracer, we cannot determine from these data whether this group of organisms was stimulated by elevated CO2 compared with these organisms in control soils. Stimulation of this group, if it occurred in the elevated CO2 plot, would be consistent with a decline in the availability of mineralizable organic matter with elevated CO2, which incubation data suggest may be the case in these soils.  相似文献

Using natural abundances of stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes, we quantified spatial and temporal patterns of carbon flow through the main channel food web in the lowland section of New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato River. The study was undertaken with the objective of determining whether the Waikato River conforms to contemporary theoretical concepts regarding carbon flow in large river food webs. Potential organic carbon sources and invertebrate and fish consumers were sampled from three different hydrogeomorphic zones on six occasions, representing a range of seasonal and flow conditions. In line with the predictions of the riverine productivity model and riverine ecosystem synthesis, autochthonous algae and biofilms were the most important basal carbon source contributing to consumer biomass. These were often supported by C3 aquatic macrophytes and allochthonous C3 riparian plants. The relative importance of organic carbon sources differed between zones and appeared to change depending on season, presumably in response to water temperature and flow, particularly in the unconstrained zone of the lower river. We also demonstrate that to draw robust conclusions, consideration must be given to quantifying the isotopic signatures of organisms lower in the food web, as these can change significantly between sampling times and hydrogeomorphic zones.  相似文献

In mixed forests, interactions among species influence ecosystem functioning but environmental conditions also play an important role in shaping relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In the context of climate change, the carbon and water balance in pure versus mixed forest stands may be differentially influenced by changing soil water availability. To test this hypothesis, we compared the influence of biodiversity on stand water use efficiency (WUES) in boreal forests between wet and dry years. We assessed the carbon isotope composition (δ 13C) of tree rings in Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris, and Picea abies growing in pure versus mixed stands. In addition, we tested whether differences in WUES affected patterns of stand basal area increment (BAIS). No biodiversity effect was found for stand δ 13C (δ 13CS) during the wet year. However, there was a significant increase in δ 13CS between the wet and the dry year and a significant effect of biodiversity on δ 13CS in the dry year. The increase in δ 13CS in mixed stands was associated with both selection and complementarity effects. Although BAIS decreased significantly in the dry year, changes in δ 13CS did not translate into variations in BAIS along the biodiversity gradient. Our results confirmed that the physiological response of boreal forest ecosystems to changing soil water conditions is influenced by species interactions and that during dry growing seasons, species interactions in mixed stands can lead to lower soil moisture availability. This illustrates that biodiversity effects can also be negative in mixed stands in the sense that soil resources can be more intensively exhausted. Overall, our results confirm that in boreal forests, the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationship depends on local environmental conditions.  相似文献

Changes in plant inputs under changing atmospheric CO2 can be expected to alter the size and/or functional characteristics of soil microbial communities which can determine whether soils are a C sink or source. Stable isotope probing was used to trace autotrophically fixed 13C into phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) biomarkers in Mojave Desert soils planted with the desert shrub, Larrea tridentata. Seedlings were pulse‐labeled with 13CO2 under ambient and elevated CO2 in controlled environmental growth chambers. The label was chased into the soil by extracting soil PLFAs after labeling at Days 0, 2, 10, 24, and 49. Eighteen of 29 PLFAs identified showed 13C enrichment relative to nonlabeled control soils. Patterns of PLFA enrichment varied temporally and were similar for various PLFAs found within a microbial functional group. Enrichment of PLFA 13C generally occurred within the first 2 days in general and fungal biomarkers, followed by increasingly greater enrichment in bacterial biomarkers as the study progressed (Gram‐negative, Gram‐positive, actinobacteria). While treatment CO2 level did not affect total PLFA‐C concentrations, microbial functional group abundances and distribution responded to treatment CO2 level and these shifts persisted throughout the study. Specifically, ratios of bacterial‐to‐total PLFA‐C decreased and fungal‐to‐bacterial PLFA‐C increased under elevated CO2 compared with ambient conditions. Differences in the timing of 13C incorporation into lipid biomarkers coupled with changes in microbial functional groups indicate that microbial community characteristics in Mojave Desert soils have shifted in response to long‐term exposure to increased atmospheric CO2.  相似文献
