The biomass formation ofAzolla was greatly enhanced by water of the River Ganga and by prevailing environmental conditions. It increased gradually from January to April (first maximum 2.409 g.m–2.day–1), declined during June (1.185 g.m–2.day–1), and reached a second its maximum during September (2.629 g.m–2.day–1). The biomass formation was related to the nutrient availability in the medium in a particular season (measured were: nitrate-N, available phosphorus, total suspended solids, and conductivity). The average annual production of 6.73 ton.ha–1.yr–1 is equivalent to the average production of 0.025 ton.ha–1.yr–1 phosphorus, 0.252 ton.ha–1.yr–1 nitrogen, and 1.57 ton.ha–1.yr–1 crude protein.  相似文献

Field responses of Gortyna xanthenes (Germar) males to traps baited with different mixtures of the female sex pheromone components were evaluated in an artichoke field. Catches were compared to those obtained by virgin females and light traps. The best results were achieved by utilizing a mixture of 5 mg Z11-16:Ald + 0.15 mg Z9-16:Ald + 0.15 mg 16:Ald + 0.12 mg Z11-16:OH, which captured only G. xanthenes males 3–5 times more than light traps and ca two times more than one virgin female. Starting from the basic mixture Z11-16:Ald (89–92%) + Z9-16:Ald (2–4%), the addition of 16:Ald (2–4%) and of Z11-16:OH (2–3%) produced an increase of G. xanthenes and a decrease of H, armigera (Hb.) catches. The inhibitory action of Z11-16:OH towards H. armigera males was confirmed.
Evaluation sur le terrain des constituants de la phéromone sexuelle de la noctuelle de l'artichaut (Gortyna xanthenes)
Résumé Dans un champ d'artichaut de la province de Salerno on a evalué la réponse des mâles de G. xanthenes à mélanges divers des constituants de la phéromone sexuelle produite par la femelle. Les meilleurs résultats ont été obtenus en employant un mélange de 5 mg Z11-16:Ald + 0.15 mg Z9-16:Ald + 0.15 mg 16:Ald + 0.12 mg Z11-16:OH, qui a capturé seulement les mâles de G. xanthenes en mesure 3–5 fois plus élevée que les pièges lumineux et ca. deux fois plus élevée que la femelle vierge. En partant du mélange base Z11-16:Ald (89–92%) + Z9-16:Ald (2–4%), l'addition de 16:Ald (2–4%) et de Z11-16:OH (2–3%) a causé un accroissement des captures de G. xanthenes et une diminution des captures de Heliothis armigera. Cela confirme l'action inhibitoire du Z11-16:OH à l'égard des males de H. armigera.

Single-cell electrophysiological recordings were obtained from olfactory receptor neurons in sensilla trichodea on male antennae of the heliothine species Heliothis subflexa and the closely related congener H. virescens. A large percentage of sensilla (72% and 81%, respectively, of all sensilla sampled) contained a single odor-responsive receptor neuron tuned to the major pheromone component of both species, Z-11-hexadecenal. A second population of sensilla on H. subflexa antennae (18%) housed receptor neurons that were tuned to Z-9-hexadecenal but also responded with less sensitivity to Z-9-tetradecenal. A similar population of sensilla (4%) on H. virescens male antennae housed receptor neurons that were shown to be tuned specifically only to Z-9-tetradecenal, with no response to even high dosages of Z-9-hexadecenal. A third population of sensilla (comprising 8% and 16% of the sensilla sampled in H. subflexa and H. virescens, respectively) housed two olfactory receptor neurons, one of which was tuned to Z-11-hexadecenyl acetate and the other tuned to Z-11-hexadecenol. In H. subflexa the Z-11-hexadecenyl acetate-tuned neuron also responded to Z-9-tetradecenal with nearly equivalent sensitivity. The carrageenan-producing red algaKappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty was brought to Vietnam from Japan in 1993. Branch fragments of this species were cultivated in a pond, lagoon, inlet and offshore in Vietnam for the first time. The best daily growth rate (DGR) of plants grown in the lagoon area attained 9–11 % day–1 in May to June (cold season). The water temperature and salinity in this area ranged from 27.2–32.4 °C and 31.4–33.7 °C, respectively. DGR of plants grown in the inlet ranged from 7 to 9% day–1 in June. Grazing by fish has been observed to occur in this area. The DGR of plants grown in the pond ranged from 5–6% in January–July, but decreased to less than 4% day–1 in August (hot season). K. alvarezii in Vietnam showed a carrageenan yield of 18.8–24.6% and gel strength of 1566–1712 g cm–2. These values are similar ones obtained fromK. alvarezii cultivated in the Philippines and Indonesia.  相似文献

The growth, biochemical composition and fatty acid profiles of six Antarctic microalgae cultured at different temperatures, ranging from 4, 6, 9, 14, 20 to 30 C, were compared. The algae were isolated from seawater, freshwater, soil and snow samples collected during our recent expeditions to Casey, Antarctica, and are currently deposited in the University of Malaya Algae Culture Collection (UMACC). The algae chosen for the study were Chlamydomonas UMACC 229, Chlorella UMACC 234, Chlorella UMACC 237, Klebsormidium UMACC 227, Navicula UMACC 231 and Stichococcus UMACC 238. All the isolates could grow at temperatures up to 20 C; three isolates, namely Navicula UMACC 231 and the two Chlorella isolates (UMACC 234 and UMACC 237) grew even at 30 C. Both Chlorella UMACC 234 and Stichococcus UMACC 238 had broad optimal temperatures for growth, ranging from 6 to 20 C (μ = 0.19 – 0.22 day–1) and 4 to 14 C (μ = 0.13 – 0.16 day–1), respectively. In contrast, optimal growth temperatures for NaviculaUMACC 231 and Chlamydomonas UMACC 229 were 4 C (μ = 0.34 day–1) and 6–9 C (μ = 0.39 – 0.40 day–1), respectively. The protein content of the Antarctic algae was markedly affected by culture temperature. All except Navicula UMACC 231 and Stichococcus UMACC 238 contained higher amount of proteins when grown at low temperatures (6–9 C). The percentage of PUFA, especially 20:5 in Navicula UMACC 231 decreased with increasing culture temperature. However, the percentages of unsaturated fatty acids did not show consistent trend with culture temperature for the other algae studied.  相似文献

The potential for pheromone-based mating disruption of eye-spotted bud moth (ESBM), Spilonota ocellana (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in apple orchards in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia was examined in small-plot trials. In a preliminary experiment, treatment of the orchard atmosphere with a 99:1 blend of Z8-tetradecenyl acetate (Z8-14:OAc) and Z8-tetradecenyl alcohol (Z8-14:OH) completely inhibited captures of male ESBM in pheromone-baited traps, but treatment with Z8-14:OAc alone did not. Therefore, all subsequent trials used the two-component blend as a disruptant. Mean catches of male ESBM in traps baited with 0.1, 1, 10, or 20 mg of 99:1 Z8-14:OAc and Z8-14:OH were significantly reduced (81–97%) in pheromone-treated plots relative to similar traps placed in control plots. In both control and treated plots, there was a significant positive relationship between trap bait dose and trap catch. In pheromone-treated plots, this suggests that high doses of trap baits over-ride the camouflage effect of disruption or overcome the effect of sensory adaptation and habituation. The number of virgin-female baited traps capturing at least one male ESBM was reduced by 96%, and mating of virgin females on mating tables was reduced by 95% in plots treated with the two-component pheromone. The total amount of Z8-14:OAc released from pheromone disruption dispensers during the latter field trials was estimated to average 6.4 g ha-1 over 11 days or 26.4 mg ha-1 h-1. The low levels of Z8-14:OH released from disruption dispensers could not be estimated by GC analysis. Dispensers loaded with a 99:1 blend of Z8-14:OAc and Z8-14:OH were highly attractive to males in baited traps, indicating that they have the potential to induce false trail following.  相似文献

Candida bombicola (ATCC 22214) and C. apicola (ATCC 96134), grown on glucose (100 g l–1) and arachidonic acid (5Z, 8Z, 11Z, 14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid; AA), 1.25 g l–1, synthesized sophorolipid up to 0.93 g l–1. Acid hydrolysis of sophorolipid yielded 19-hydroxy-5Z, 8Z, 11Z, 14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid (19-HETE) and 20-hydroxy-5Z, 8Z, 11Z, 14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) which were identified by TLC and GC-MS; the ratio of synthesis was 73:27, respectively. Conversion of AA by immobilized Candida bombicola, suspended in beads of 2% (w/v) calcium alginate for 96 h, gave an 83% conversion of 1 g AA l–1 to 19- and 20-HETE. There was no significant loss in the efficiency of the immobilized cells after ten uses.  相似文献

Chironomus piger larvae are widespread in small rivers and canals strongly polluted with domestic sewage. Despite this, almost nothing is known concerning the biology of the species under natural conditions and its role in the process of river self-purification. For two years, benthic samples were collected in the Sestra River at a site about 250 m downstream of the effluent discharge drains of a sewage treatment installation where the greatest concentrations of the larvae occurred. The number and biomass ofC. piger larvae were subject to marked fluctuations,viz. 96,000–348,000 ind m–2 and 420–1,800 g m–2. 460 degreedays (on average) was required for development of one generation.C. piger has 5 or 6 generations per year depending on the hydrometeorological conditions during the growing season.C. piger larvae play an important role in self-purification of the river. They utilize precipitating seston for food and for building their dwelling tubes. According to our calculations the amount of organic matter assimilated in the area of maximum larval concentration ranged 80–177 g wet weight m–2 day–1, and 32–71 g wet weight m–2day–1 was mineralized.  相似文献

When small drops ofUstilago maydissporidia were placed 100–200 μm apart on agar surfaces and covered with paraffin oil, sporidia from one drop formed thin hyphae that grew in a zig-zag fashion toward the other drop if it contained sporidia making the appropriate pheromone. For example,a2b2mating hyphae grew towarda1b1anda1b2mating hyphae, and the filaments eventually fused tip to tip. Time-lapse photography indicated that the mating hyphae can rapidly change orientation in response to nearby compatible sporidia. When exposed to pheromone produced by cells in an adjacent drop, haploid sporidia with thea2allele began elongating before sporidia with thea1allele. Sporidia without functional pheromone genes responded to pheromone although they did not induce a response, and sporidia without pheromone receptors induced formation of mating hyphae although they did not form mating hyphae. Diploid sporidia heterozygous atbbut not ataformed straight, rigid, aerial filaments when exposed to pheromone produced by the appropriate haploid sporidia. Again, thea2a2b1b2strain formed filaments more quickly than thea1a1b1b2strain. Taken together, these results suggest that thea2pheromone diffuses less readily or is degraded more quickly than thea1pheromone.  相似文献

Lipid composition of abalone was examined over a one-year interval. A feeding trial was designed to cover a full reproductive cycle in young adult green abalone, Haliotis fulgens, consisting of five diet treatments: the macrophytic algal phaeophyte Egregia menziesii, rhodophyte Chondracanthus canaliculatus, chlorophyte Ulva lobata, a composite of the three algae and a starvation control. The lipid class, fatty acid, sterol and 1-O-alkyl glyceryl ether profiles were determined for foot, hepatopancreas/gonad tissues and larvae. The major fatty acids were 16:0, 18:0, 18:1(n-7)c, 18:1(n-9)c, 20:4(n-6), 20:5(n-3) and 22:5(n-3), as well as 14:0 for abalone fed brown and red algae. 4,8,12-Trimethyltridecanoic acid, derived from algae, was detected for the first time in H. fulgens (hepatopancreas complex, 1.2–13.9%; larvae, 0.5% of total fatty acids). Diacylglyceryl ethers were present in larvae (0.6% of total lipid). The major 1-O-alkyl glycerols were 16:0, 16:1 and 18:0. Additionally, 18:1(n-9) was a major component in hepatopancreas/gonad and larvae. The major sterol was cholesterol (96–100% of total sterols). Highest growth rates were linked to temperature and occurred in abalone fed the phaeophyte E. menziesii (43 μm·day–1, 56 mg·day–1 yearly mean), an alga containing the highest levels of C20 polyunsaturated fatty acids and the highest ratio of 20:4(n-6) to 20:5(n-3). This study provides evidence of the influence of diet and temperature on seasonal changes in abalone lipid profiles, where diet is most strongly related to body mass and temperature to shell length. The allocation of lipids to specific tissues in green abalone clarifies their lipid metabolism. These results provide a basis for improving nutrition of abalone in mariculture through formulation of artificial feeds.  相似文献

The behavioural significance of (Z)-9-tetradecenal to male H. assulta was tested by comparing the number of moths attracted to lures containing a standard synthetic female sex pheromone with lures in which (Z)-9-tetradecenal was also added. The standard pheromone mixture used contained 1000 g (Z)-9-hexadecenal, 50 g (Z)-11-hexadecenal, 300 g (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate and 15 g (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate impregnated on rubber septa. Addition of (Z)-9-tetradecenal to the standard pheromone was shown to significantly reduce the caught of male H. assulta when added in amounts greater than 10 g or 1% of the major pheromone component in both field and net-house experiments. The reduction in catch was found to be dependent on the quantity of (Z)-9-tetradecenal added to the standard pheromone. The efficacy of pheromone mating disruption was investigated in a 7×6×3 m corn storage room harboring a high population density of Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) and Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier). Pheromones were released from a controlled release dispenser, the metered semiochemical timed release system (MSTRSTM) at emission rates of 0.6 g min–1 (Z9,E12:14:Ac for Indian meal moth) and 0.2 g min–1 (Z7,E11-16:Ac for Angouimois grain moth). Mating disruption efficacy was evaluated using three parameters: male capture in pheromone traps, visual examination of mating behavior, and the incidence and frequency of mating as measured by spermatophores. In three trials, comparisons were made between data collected before pheromone treatment and during treatment. Disruption of pheromone source location by males averaged 70% and 40% for P. interpunctella and S. cerealella, respectively, in the three trials. In addition, reduced levels of copulation by both species were recorded during pheromone treatment. More importantly, significant reductions were recorded in the incidence and frequency of mating by females of both species collected during the treatment period. While 85% of P. interpunctella females collected before pheromone treatment in three trials had mated at least once, only 50% of the females collected during treatment had mated. The mean number of matings, as measured by spermatophores, ranged between 0.8–1.1 and 0.5–0.7 before and during pheromone treatment, respectively. Similarly, a 20–30% reduction in the proportion of mated S. cerealella females was recorded during pheromone treatment. In the three trials, mean number of spermatophores per S. cerealella female averaged 1.0 and 0.7 during the pretreatment and treatment periods, respectively. The cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis was used to verify the possibility of employing microalgal biomass to reduce the contents of nitrate and phosphate in wastewaters. Batch tests were carried out in 0.5 dm3 Erlenmeyer flasks under conditions of light limitation (40 mol quanta m–2 s–1) at a starting biomass level of 0.50 g/dm3 and varying temperature in the range 23–40°C. In this way, the best temperature for the growth of this microalga (30°C) was determined and the related thermodynamic parameters were estimated. All removed nitrate was used for biomass growth (biotic removal), whereas phosphate appeared to be removed mainly by chemical precipitation (abiotic removal). The best results in terms of specific and volumetric growth rates ( =0.044 day–1, Q x =33.2 mg dm–3 day–1) as well as volumetric rate and final yield of nitrogen removal ( =3.26 mg dm–3 day–1, =0.739) were obtained at 30°C, whereas phosphorus was more effectively removed at a lower temperature. In order to simulate full-scale studies, batch tests of nitrate and phosphate removal were also performed in 5.0 dm3 vessels (mini-ponds) at the optimum temperature (30°C) but increasing the photon fluence rate to 80 mol quanta m–2 s–1 and varying the initial biomass concentration from 0.25 to 0.86 g/dm3. These additional tests demonstrated that an increase in the inoculum level up to 0.75 g/dm3 enhanced both NO3 and PO4 3– removal, confirming a strict dependence of these processes on biomass activity. In addition, the larger surface area of the ponds and the higher light intensity improved removal yields and kinetics compared to the flasks, particularly concerning phosphorus removal ( =0.032–0.050 day–1, Q x =34.7–42.4 mg dm–3 day–1, =3.24–4.06 mg dm–3 day–1, =0.750–0.879, =0.312–0.623 mg dm–3 day–1, and =0.224–0.440).  相似文献

Clearance rates of Synchaeta pectinata, Brachionus calyciflorus and Asplanchna girodi on Tetrahymena pyriformis (46 µm in length) at a density of 10 cells ml–1, in the presence of algal food, were 2.5 to 6.1 ml rot.–1 day–1. Clearance rates of these rotifers were, respectively, about 2, 3, and 13 times lower on Strobilidium gyrans (58 µm in length) than on T. pyriformis, indicating that the saltations of S. gyrans are an effective escape response. Clearance rates of S. pectinata were considerably lower on Colpidium striatum (81 µm) than on S. gyrans, suggesting that S. pectinata may not be able to ingest ciliates of this size. S. pectinata had a clearance rate of 19 ml rot.–1 day–1 on S. gyrans at a density of 1.2 cells ml–1, in the absence of edible algal food. Rotifers may prey extensively on ciliates in natural plankton communities, ingesting 25 to 50 individuals in the 45–60 µm size range day–1.  相似文献

Measurements of net ecosystem CO2 exchange by eddy correlation, incident photosynthetically active photon flux density (PPFD), soil temperature, air temperature, and air humidity were made in a black spruce (Picea mariana) boreal woodland near Schefferville, Quebec, Canada, from June through August 1990. Nighttime respiration was between 0.5 and 1.5 kg C ha–1 h–1, increasing with temperature. Net uptake of carbon during the day peaked at 3 kg C ha–1 h–1, and the daily net uptake over the experiment was 12 kg C ha–1 day–1. Photosynthesis dropped substantially at leaf-to-air vapor pressure deficit (VPD) greater than 7 mb, presumably as a result of stomatal closure. The response of ecosystem photosynthesis to incident PPFD was markedly non-linear, with an abrupt saturation at 600 mol m–2 s–1. This sharp saturation reflected the geometry of the spruce canopy (isolated conical crowns), the frequently overcast conditions, and an increase in VPD coincident with high radiation. The ecosystem light-use efficiency increased markedly during overcast periods as a result of a more even distribution of light across the forest surface. A mechanistic model of forest photosynthesis, parameterized with observations of leaf density and nitrogen content from a nearby stand, provided accurate predictions of forest photosynthesis. The observations and model results indicated that ecosystem carbon balance at the site is highly sensitive to temperature, and relatively insensitive to cloudiness.  相似文献

The sexual behaviour of females of the Egyptian cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), was studied in the laboratory. Calling of females was maximal on the 2–3rd night between 3 and 9 h into scotophase. Largest amounts of pheromone were found in the glands of 1–3 day-old 2–3 h into scotophase: a maximum of 6–8 ng of (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate per female. Very low amounts of pheromone were detected 1 h before and at the end of scotophase. Mating of 2–3 day-old females, occurred mainly between 0 and 3 h into scotophase. Mating suppressed the pheromone titre drastically when measured 3 h after copulation but the titre increased significantly after 24 h, prior to egg laying. However, when egg laying commenced, the amount of pheromone detected was negligible. A high concentration of synthetic pheromone in closed containers did not affect calling of females. On the other hand mating was drastically suppressed in a pheromone-permeated atmosphere.
Zusammenfassung Das Sexualverhalten der Weibchen des ägyptischen Baumwollwurms, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) wurde unter Laborverhältnissen untersucht. Das maximales Rufen der Weibchen war in der 2–3 Nacht zwischen 3 und 9 Stunden der Skotophase. Die grössten Pheromonmengen wurden in den Drüsen der 1 bis 3 Tage alten nach 2–3 Stunden in der Skotophase gefunden und zwar maximal 6–8 ng (Z,E)-9,11-Tetradecadienyl Acetate. Ein drastischer Abfall des Pheromoninhalts wurde zwischen der 4 und 5 Nacht beobachtet. Sehr kleine Pheromonmengen wurden eine Stunde vor der Skotophase und nach ihrem Ablauf gefunden. Die Paarung 2–3 Tage alten wurde im allgemeinen zwischen Stunden 0 und 3 der Skotophase beobachtet. Drei Stunden nach der Paarung war der Pheromontiter drastisch herabgesetzt, er stieg jedoch nach 24 Stunden, vor der Eiablage bedeutend an. Sobald die Eiablage anfing, war das Pheromon jedoch kaum nachweisbar. Eine hohe Konzentration des synthetischen Pheromons in geschlossenen Gefässen beeinflusste das Rufen der Weibchen nicht. Anderseits war jedoch die Paarung in einer mit Pheromon durchgedrungenen Atmosphäre sehr stark herabgesetzt.

We studied the effect of different concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 g l–1) of sodium chloride at one food level of Chlorella (1×106 cells ml–1) on competition between the rotifers B. rotundiformis and H. jenkinae, both of which were isolated from a saline lake. The population growth experiments were conducted for 3 weeks. Both the rotifer species did not survive beyond one week at a salinity of 0 g l–1. Regardless of salt concentration and the presence of a competitor, H. jenkinae reached higher densities than B. rotundiformis. When grown alone, both B. rotundiformis and H. jenkinae showed optimal peak population densities at the salinity of 6 and 9 g l–1. Since biomass wise, B. rotundiformis was larger than H. jenkinae, it showed a lower numerical abundance. Thus, the maximum peak population densities of B. rotundiformis and H. jenkinae recorded in this study were 107±3 and 203±28 ind. ml–1. The maximal rates of population increase for B. rotundiformis and H, jenkinae when grown alone were 0.264±0.003 and 0.274±0.004, respectively. Our results also indicated that B. rotundiformis and H. jenkinae coexisted better at a salinity of 6 and 9 g l–1 of sodium chloride while a salinity of 3 g l–1 favoured Hexarthra over B. rotundiformis. At 12 g l–1, both the rotifer species grown alone or together showed lower growth rates compared to those at lower salinity levels. Except 0 g l–1, in all other salinity treatments, H. jenkinae was a superior competitor to B. rotundiformis.  相似文献

The amount of nitrogen fixed byLeucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit was assessed on an Alfisol at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture located in southwestern Nigeria. Estimated by the difference method, nitrogen fixation of leucaena inoculated with Rhizobium strain IRc 1045 was 133 kg ha–1 in six months. Inoculation with Rhizobium strain IRc 1050 gave a lower nitrogen fixation of 76 kg ha–1. Fertilization with 40 and 80 kg N ha–1 inhibited nitrogen fixation by 43–76% and 49–71%, respectively. Estimates with the15N dilution method gave nitrogen fixation of 134 kg ha–1 in six months when leucaena was inoculated with Rhizobium strain IRc 1045 and 98 kg ha–1 for leucaena inoculated with Rhizobium strain IRc 1050. This nitrogen fixation represented 34–39% of the plant nitrogen. Inoculated leucaena derived 5–6% of its nitrogen from applied fertilizer and 56–54% from soil.  相似文献

Nitrogen deposition, mineralisation, uptake and leaching were measured on a monthly basis in the field during 2 years in six forested stands on acidic soils under mountainous climate. Studies were conducted in three Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] plantations (D20: 20 year; D40: 40 yr; D60: 60 yr) on abandoned croplands in the Beaujolais Mounts; and two spruce (Picea abies Karst.) plantations (S45: 45 yr; S90: 90 yr) and an old beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand (B150: 150 yr) on ancient forest soils in a small catchment in the Vosges Mountains. N deposition in throughfall varied between 7–8 kg ha–1 year–1 (D20, B150, S45) and 15–21 kg ha–1 yr–1 (S90, D40, D60). N in annual litterfall varied between 20–29 kg ha–1 (D40, D60, S90), and 36–43 kg ha–1 (D20, S45, B150). N leaching below root depth varied among stands within a much larger range, between 1–9 kg ha–1 yr–1 (B150, S45, D60) and 28–66 kg ha–1 yr–1 (D40, S90, D20), with no simple relationship with N deposition, or N deposition minus N storage in stand biomass. N mineralisation was between 57–121 kg ha–1 yr–1 (S45, D40, S90) and between 176–209 kg ha–1 yr–1 in (B150, D60 and D20). The amounts of nitrogen annually mineralised and nitrified were positively related. Neither general soil parameters, such as pH, soil type, base saturation and C:N ratio, nor deposition in throughfall or litterfall were simply related to the intensity of mineralisation and/or nitrification. When root uptake was not allowed, nitrate leaching increased by 11 kg ha–1 yr–1 at S45, 36 kg ha–1 yr–1 at S90 and between 69 and 91 kg ha–1 yr–1 at D20, D40, B150 and D60, in relation to the nitrification rates of each plot. From this data set and recent data from the literature, we suggest that: high nitrification and nitrate leaching in Douglas-fir soils was likely related to the former agricultural land use. High nitrification rate but very low nitrate leaching in the old beech soil was related to intense recycling of mineralised N by beech roots. Medium nitrification and nitrate leaching in the old spruce stand was related to the average level of N deposition and to the deposition and declining health of the stand. Very low nitrification and N leaching in the young spruce stand were considered representative of fast growing spruce plantations receiving low N deposition on acidic soils of ancient coniferous forests. Consequently, we suggest that past land use and fine root cycling (which is dependent on to tree species and health) should be taken into account to explain the variability in the relation between N deposition and leaching in forests.  相似文献

Summary The plant species composition of the chaff piles of three species of harvester ant (Messor spp.) and the contribution of the chaff to the organic pool were studied from August 1985 to July 1987. There were distinct differences in the plant species composition of the chaff of the three species. We attribute this to the different diets of the three species, which reflect the relative sizes of their individuals and their foraging strategies. The amount of chaff accumulated varies greatly between the three species (Messor rugossus: 127–196 g · ha–1 · y–1;Messor ebeninus: 2823–4437 g · ha–1 · y–1;Messor arenarius: 2165–2535 g · ha–1 · y–1), although the number of nests per hectare is virtually the same. We found that the amount of chaff is related to the rate of activity and the size of the individuals of each of the three ant species. The total chaff accumulated during the study period was 19.2 kg · ha–1, which is an important contribution to the organic matter in the soil in the Negev desert ecosystem.  相似文献
