Gramine (N,N-Dimethyl-3-aminomethylindole) content in various barley cultivars varied from 0 to 2.6 mmoles/kg fresh weight. Those cultivars which were lacking gramine were the most susceptible to the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). The population growth rate of R. padi negatively correlated with gramine content in leaves of barley seedlings. In addition, gramine incorporated in artificial diets decreased survival, amount of diet ingested and reproduction of aphids at concentrations similar to those found in plant leaves. Thus, it is suggested that gramine may be one of the factors responsible for the resistance of barley seedlings to R. padi.
Résumé La teneur de gramine (N,N-dimethyl-3-aminomethyl-indole) dans différentes cultures de seigle présente des variations comprises entre 0 et 2,8 mmoles/Kg (poids frois). Les varietés dépourvues de gramine sont plus sensibles à l'attaque des pucerons. Le taux de croissance de la population des Rhopalosiphum padi a une correlation négative avec la teneur en gramine des feuilles de plantules de seigle. D'ailleurs, la gramine diminue les taux de nourrissement, de survie et de réproduction des pucerons alimentés avec des diètes artificielles contenant des concentrations du produit testé, similaire à celles trouvées pour les feuilles des plantes. Donc, on suggèrent que la gramine peut être un des facteurs responsables de la résistance des plantules de seigle contre l'attaque de Rhopalosiphum padi.

2,4-Dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA), a hydroxamic acid (Hx) occurring in wheat, was shown to deter feeding by the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), and to reduce BYDV transmission to the plant. Dual choice tests with wheat leaves showed the preferential settlement of aphids on leaves with lower levels of DIMBOA. Electric monitoring of aphid feeding behaviour showed that in seedlings with higher DIMBOA levels fewer aphids reached the phloem and they needed longer times to contact a phloem vessel than in those with lower levels. When aphids carrying BYDV were allowed to feed on wheat cultivars with different DIMBOA levels, fewer plants were infected with BYDV in the higher DIMBOA cultivars than in the lower ones. Preliminary field experiments showed a tendency for wheat cultivars with higher Hx levels to be more tolerant to infection by BYDV than lower Hx level ones.  相似文献

The presence of glutathione transferases and esterase activity was investigated in Rhopalosiphum padi and the effects of the cereal hydroxamic acid, 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) on these detoxification enzymes was studied. Activity of glutathione S-transferases and general esterases was determined for adult aphids feeding on a natural diet lacking DIMBOA and on an artificial DIMBOA-containing diet for 48 hours. In vivo, DIMBOA in the diet inhibited the activities of esterases by 50-75% at all concentrations tested (0.5-4 mM). The activity of glutathione transferase was inhibited to a lesser extent (30%) at the higher concentrations of DIMBOA. In vitro, DIMBOA generally inhibited the activity of esterases with an IC(50) of 33 micro M, and had a slight inhibitory effect on glutathione S-transferases. These effects of DIMBOA could make the aphids vulnerable to electrophilic agents and insecticides which may be metabolized via esterases and GSTs. In cereals, therefore, DIMBOA may act by interfering with esterase- or GST-mediated detoxification of xenobiotics by aphids.  相似文献

Information on the olfactory system in antennae of Geometridae moths is very limited, and odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) working as transporters of lipophilic odors have not been identified. In the first investigation on this family of insects, we examined antennal OBPs of the Japanese giant looper, Ascotis selenaria cretacea. RT-PCR experiments using several pairs of degenerate primers designed from known cDNA sequences encoding lepidopteran OBPs successfully amplified partial sequences of two pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs), named AscrPBP1 and AscrPBP2 in reference to their corresponding nucleotide sequence homologies with other PBPs. Using 5′- and 3′-rapid amplification of cDNA end strategies, a cDNA clone for AscrPBP1 encoding a protein of 141 amino acids was isolated. Western blotting with the antiserum against recombinant AscrPBP1 overexpressed in Escherichia coli showed that the AscrPBP1 gene was more strongly expressed in male antennae than in female antennae. Furthermore, natural AscrPBP1was isolated by immunoprecipitation with the antiserum, and its binding ability was evaluated by using synthetic sex pheromonal compounds with a C19 chain. The result indicated that AscrPBP1 bound not only the pheromone components, 3,6,9-nonadecatriene and its 3,4-epoxy derivative, but also unnatural 6,7- and 9,10-epoxy derivatives. While no general odorant-binding proteins (GOBPs) were amplified in the RT-PCR experiments, two antisera prepared from GOBP1 and GOBP2 of Bombyx mori suggested the occurrence of at least two GOBPs in the A. s. cretacea antennae.  相似文献

Three field experiments, with factorial designs and consisting of monocrops of oats, Avena sativa, and mixtures of oats with faba bean, Vicia faba, were conducted in 1983–1985. The densities of generalist epigeal predators were manipulated by vertical barriers or ingress and egress trenches. Pitfall trapping was used to measure the effect of manipulation. Tillers were sampled to monitor populations of the major pest of oats, the bird cherry-oats aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, and to estimate their peak densities. Also grain yields were measured.The barriers and the egress trenches significantly reduced the pitfall catches of carabids, staphylinids and spiders. The effect on Coccinella septempunctata was variable. The peak aphid densities were 11–125% higher in the predator reduction treatments than in the controls. The grain yields of oats were reduced by 19–22% in all cases where aphid densities were increased by the manipulations. Relief of predation pressure by generalist epigeal predators is the proposed explanation for the increased R. padi densities and subsequently decreased oat yields.Mixed cropping increased the pitfall catches of carabids by 14–36%. Trechus spp. contributed most to the pattern. In 1985 the early egress manipulation increased the aphids' peak density and decreased the yield of oats significantly more in the monocrop than in the mixture: this was thought to be because the R. padi population escaped predation as the result of a higher colonization rate in the mixture, rather than being due to responses of the predators to crop diversification.
Résumé Trois expériences en plein champ ont été réalisées en Finlande en 1983–85 pour étudier l'influence des prédateurs épigés sur le niveau de contamination par R. padi et la production de grains d'avoine en cultures pures ou associées à Vicia faba. R. padi est le principal ravageur de l'avoine dans ce système. Les captures réalisées par les prédateurs épigés, principalement des carabidae, des staphylinidae et des araignées ont réduit les attaques dans les parcelles entourées de barrières verticales (1983) ou de fossés inondés. Les réactions de Coccinella septempunctata à ces manipulations ne sont pas constantes et ne peuvent pas expliquer son influence sur les populations de R. padi. Les densités maximales de pucerons ont été de 11 à 125% élevées dans les parcelles modifiées que dans les parcelles témoins ou entourées de fossés inondés. Les récoltes d'avoine ont été réduites de 19 à 22% dans tous les cas où la densité de pucerons a augmenté.Dans la discussion, la limitation de la pression de prédation par les généralistes épigés a été mise en avant pour expliquer l'augmentation des densités de R. padi et la diminution consécutive de la récolte d'avoine. La comparaison des caractéristiques du système R. padi avoine de printemps et du système R. padi/blé d'hiver laisse supposer qu'elles ont contribué à la relative importance des prédateurs généralistes consommant R. padi tôt dans la saison.Ces résultats ne suggèrent aucun effet négatif de la culture mixte avec V. faba sur la prédation épigée. Cependant, des éléments montrent qu'une forte densité de colonisation par des immigrants ailés de R. padi dans les cultures peut permettre à la population proie d'échapper aux prédateurs généralistes quand ceux-ci deviennent saturés aux densités de proies élevées. On peut en conclure que la contribution potentielle des prédateurs épigés aux récoltes de céréales de printemps,-qui ne se rlise que lorsque R. padi n'est pas limité d'une autre façon-, dépend du niveau atteint par la première colonisation par R. padi ailés. Leur contribution est la plus faible lors d'une très faible ou d'une très forte colonisation.

We have identified and completely sequenced a novel plasmid isolated from the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. Evidence which suggests that the plasmid occurs localized within the bacterial endosymbionts is presented. The plasmid contains the four genes that constitute the entire leucine operon. This fact makes it really unique since most plasmids are dispensable and lack genes that encode essential anabolic functions. Four more phloem-feeding aphid species also seem to contain homologous plasmids.Although further work is necessary, we hypothesize that this plasmid has appeared during the evolution of the symbiotic association between the aphid and the bacterial endosymbiont. The fact that this plasmid contains the entire leucine operon can be related to physiological evidence showing that the aphid host's diet of plant phloem is deficient in essential amino acids.  相似文献

Females of Adoxophyes orana F. v. R. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) could mate after one day, or after up to 7 days, after eclosion. It was recorded how many eggs per female were laid, had been fertilized and ultimately hatched. Mating rate was assessed by counting the spermatophores in a female.Egg production did not depend on mating rate, but proportion fertilization of eggs from females with three or more spermatophores was reduced. Delayed mating promoted longevity and changed the pattern of oviposition in time. No correlation was found between the proportion hatching of fertilized eggs and any of the other variables in the experiments.The data were introduced into a population model to compute the relation between fecundity and probability to mate.

Résumé Des femelles de A. orana F. v. R. (Lep., Tortricid.) ont eu la possibilité de s'accoupler le lendemain de leur émergence. Nous avons dénombré l'effectif d'oeufs pondus par chaque femelle, et calculé leur taux de fertilisation et d'éclosion. Les femelles ont été disséquées et les spermatophores comptés pour déterminer le nombre de copulations. La même procédure a été suivie avec d'autres femelles qui ont pu copuler librement jusquà leur mort, (leur longévité a été notée), mais avec une date du premier accouplement pouvant être retardée jusqu'à 6 jours après l'émergence.La production d'oeufs ne dépend pas du nombre de copulations, mais le taux de fertilisation des femelles avec 3 ou 4 spermatophores a été plus faible. Le retard de la date du premier accouplement augmente la longévité, mais réduit légérement le taux de fertilisation. La production d'oeufs était à peu près proportionnelle à la durée de la vie décomptée à partir du moment où la copulation était possible. Aucune corrélation n'a été mise en évidence entre la taux d'éclosion des oeufs fertilisés et les variables de l'habitat.Pour évaluer ces résultats et obtenir plus de connaissances sur les conséquences des copulations retardées, par exemple provenant de procédures d'interruption des copulations, les données ont été introduites successivement dans un modèle de populations pour établir la relations entre fécondité et probabilité d'accouplement.

The effects of the indole alkaloid gramine on the behavior of the aphids Schizaphis graminum and Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on barley seedlings and on artificial diets were studied. On barley cv. F. Union, which lacks gramine, S. graminum ingested from phloem tissue for 30–80 min and non-phloem for 20–40 min, over a period of 3 h. In cultivar Datil S, gramine was found only in the epidermis and parenchyma mesophyll cells. On this cultivar, the non-phloem wave form of S. graminum was not observed. On F. Union, R. padi ingested non-phloem with short periods of ingestion from phloem. On cv. Datil S, this aphid did not show the non-phloem wave form. In experiments performed with cv. F. Union seedlings that contained exogenous gramine S. graminum did not ingest from phloem. Exogenous gramine was found only in the vascular bundles. It is suggested that gramine content and location may affect the feeding behavior of aphids in barley.
Résumé Les effects de la gramine sur le comportement alimentaire des pucerons Schizaphis graminum et Rhopalosiphum padi on été étudiés en plantules d'orge (Hordeum distichum) et aussi avec des diètes artificielles à l'aide d'un moniteur électronique. S.graminum se nourri pendant 30–80 minutes à partir du phloème et il a pris 20–40 minutes en se nourrisant d'autres tissues divers, d'un total de 3 heures d'exposition à la plante. Dans la culture Datil S la gramine a été trouvée seulement dans les cellules de l'epidermis et du parenchyme du mesophyle. Dans ce cas, l'onde non-phloematique de S. graminum, n'a été pas observé; le temps pour le première onde X a été plus prolongé par rapport à la culture F. Union. Dans la culture F. Union, R. padi se nourri principalement de tissue non-phloematique (35–100 minutes) et du phloème par des brèves périodes (15–25 minutes). Dans le cas de la culture Datil S ce puceron n'a pas montré l'onde X. D'autre part, quand les plantules de F. Union ont été poussées dans des solution avec gramine, S. graminum ne se nourri pas du phloeme, tandis que R. padi montre un comportement similaire a celui-ce observé avec plantules sans gramine. La gramine absorbé par les plantules a été retrouvée seulement dans les faisceaux vasculaires. D'autre part, la gramine dans des diètes artificielles agit comme repulsif alimentaire à partir de concentrations de 0,5 mM. Avec des diètes contenant 3 mM de gramine l'alimentation des pucerons a été inhibée. Pourtant, ces resultats sugèrent que le contenuet et la localisation de la gramine peuvent modifier le comportement alimentaire des pucerons en plantules d'orge.

The opposing effects of attraction to host-derived kairomones and repellency from the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin were investigated with aphid parasitoids from the genus Aphidius (Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae). The spatial distribution of female parasitoids was recorded in a series of experiments conducted in a small glasshouse containing wheat plants either infested with cereal aphids, Sitobion avenae (F.) (Homoptera: Aphididae), uninfested or treated with the recommended field concentration of deltamethrin. The number of parasitoids per plant were counted at 0.5 h, 1 h and then at one hourly intervals up to 8 h after release. Parasitoids showed a strong aggregation response to aphid-infested plants compared to adjacent uninfested plants. With the introduction of insecticidetreated plants around the aphid-infested plants, parasitoids showed a greater tendency to disperse away, resulting in fewer parasitoids on plants and significantly lower rates of aphid parasitism. The degree of aphid fall-off from plants was a good indicator of parasitoid foraging activity. In field studies, using sticky traps to measure the activity of parasitoids in plots sprayed with water, deltamethrin and/or an artificial honeydew solution, repellent properties were evident for up to 2 days after application. The attraction/arrestment stimuli associated with the honeydew solution were sufficient for parasitoids to continue searching insecticide-treated areas. The implications of these findings for parasitoids searching crops contaminated with aphid-derived kairomones and insecticides are discussed.  相似文献

Radioactive plants were used to determine whether gynoparae of the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) fed after settling on Prunus padus (L.). Despite being starved for 24 h they did not feed. The adaptive significance of the short adult life and low fecundity of gynoparae was discussed in the light of these results.

Cyclical parthenogens, including aphids, are attractive models for comparing the genetic outcomes of sexual and asexual reproduction, which determine their respective evolutionary advantages. In this study, we examined how reproductive mode shapes genetic structure of sexual (cyclically parthenogenetic) and asexual (obligately parthenogenetic) populations of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi by comparing microsatellite and allozyme data sets. Allozymes showed little polymorphism, confirming earlier studies with these markers. In contrast, microsatellite loci were highly polymorphic and showed patterns very discordant from allozyme loci. In particular, microsatellites revealed strong heterozygote excess in asexual populations, whereas allozymes showed heterozygote deficits. Various hypotheses are explored that could account for the conflicting results of these two types of genetic markers. A strong differentiation between reproductive modes was found with both types of markers. Microsatellites indicated that sexual populations have high allelic polymorphism and heterozygote deficits (possibly because of population subdivision, inbreeding or selection). Little geographical differentiation was found among sexual populations confirming the large dispersal ability of this aphid. In contrast, asexual populations showed less allelic polymorphism but high heterozygosity at most loci. Two alternative hypotheses are proposed to explain this heterozygosity excess: allele sequence divergence during long-term asexuality or hybrid origin of asexual lineages. Clonal diversity of asexual lineages of R. padi was substantial suggesting that they could have frozen genetic diversity from the pool of sexual lineages. Several widespread asexual genotypes were found to persist through time, as already seen in other aphid species, a feature seemingly consistent with the general-purpose genotype hypothesis.  相似文献

The host microhabitat location behavior of females of the generalist parasitoid Campoletis sonorensis (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) was studied in a wind tunnel. Visual cues associated with the host plant cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., were important and significantly more parasitoids completed flights to a damaged 4-leaf cotton plant bearing a Heliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larva and frass than to a similarly damaged single leaf with frass and a larva. This difference in completed flights was not due to differences in amounts of volatiles released by the two stimuli. Both naive and experienced parasitoids responded differently to an undamaged cotton leaf, a mechanially damaged leaf, a naturally damaged leaf with the host removed and a naturally damaged leaf with a host larva. Parasitoids completed significantly fewer flights to the undamaged sources of volatiles than to damaged sources of volatiles. Experienced females responded strongly to all types of damage. The number of flights completed by naive females to the three types of damage differed but not significantly and was less than the number completed by experienced females. Components of the preflight experience were varied to determine which factors were responsible for the higher response of experienced females to the host/plant complex. Oviposition was the most important component of this experience. Contact with host frass or plant damage followed by oviposition did not increase the response over that exhibited by females allowed oviposition only. When frass or damaged plant material were contacted without subsequent oviposition, females completed fewer flights than naive females.  相似文献

Olfactometry showed that the response of spring migrants of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Homoptera: Aphididae), to the repellent winter host volatile methyl salicylate changes with age of the adult aphid. Between three and four days after becoming adult, and having left the winter host Prunus padus L., aphids lost their negative response to the chemical. The change in response was not associated with contact with a summer host, oats. In a settling choice bioassay, migrants avoided oats which had been exposed to volatile methyl salicylate. Aphids with removed antennal tips did not avoid the exposed plant, indicating that plant choice was influenced by cues from the plant surface. The results are discussed in relation to the use of methyl salicylate in integrated control.  相似文献

Aedes (Ochlerotatus) albifasciatus(Macquart 1838) (Diptera: Culicidae) is a neotropical flood water mosquito, incriminated as the main vector of the western equine encephalitis virus, and which affects beef and milk production in central Argentina. The short time required to hatch and develop from egg to adult, usually in temporary pools, suggests a strategy which allows for exploitation of transient pools, thus evading predation and interspecific competition. Under these conditions intra specific competition could represent a major density-dependent source of larval mortality, but the relative importance of density-dependent regulation of mosquito populations has generated controversy. Therefore we examined the effects of larval density on basic population characteristics of Ae. albifasciatusin the laboratory. Larvae were obtained by synchronous hatching of eggs laid by field-trapped females. Emerging larvae (L1) were used to build cohorts of different initial densities, kept in plastic trays with 400 ml of distilled water, and food supplied daily during the first 10 days (0.1 g per larvae day–1). Age-specific development time and specific and relative mortality were estimated, and their relation to initial larval density was assessed through linear and non-linear regressions and correlation analysis. First hatching was registered 3 h after flooding the eggs. Higher levels of pre-adult mortality were detected in groups with higher densities. Specific mortality and average time to enter a stage of L1 to L3 could directly be related to initial larval density, but no significant relations were found for L4 and pupae. Results suggest that crowding could be a factor capable of regulating the density of natural populations of Ae. albifasciatus.  相似文献

The rose aphid, Macrosiphum rosae (L.), was tested for its ability to produce sexual forms on rose leaves, after induction by environmental conditions in the field and in the laboratory. Clones were collected in Tübingen, Federal Republic of Germany, and in south-eastern New South Wales, Australia. The German clones all produced sexual forms, while the response of the Australian clones was weak. There appeared to be a bias in the sex ratio towards females: This is discussed in developmental terms. The environmental and genetic factors influencing the response are considered.  相似文献

Studies were performed to develop an efficient method for fumonisin toxin production in sufficient quantities for animal toxicological experiments, on the basis of three earlier published fumonisin toxin production methods. Three absolutely necessary factors were taken into account and tested in a serial experiment. TheFusarium verticillioides strain MRC 826 was directly inoculated onto soaked, autoclaved, whole maize kernels (50 g/1.71 jar). The inoculation was performed by standard spore suspension (l×l06/ml), a 5/2 surface/volume culture was prepared and incubated at 25 °C for 5 weeks. To maintain the optimal aw of approximately 1.00, the evaporated water was re-filled weekly. A final concentration of 4454±1060.9 ppm fumonisin B1 was reached, with good repeatability. In the laboratory practice, consistent production of constant amounts of FB1 can be obtained by applying the above settings.  相似文献

This study aimed at evaluating the influence of intrinsic factors (clone, morph) on the parameters of the intrinsic rate of increase of Sitobion avenae (F.) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). For each species, apterous and alate exules of three clones originating from French oceanic regions were compared at 20 °C.The clonal factor had a significant effect on both time from birth until onset of reproduction (TBR) and intrinsic rate of increase (r). This effect was lower than that of the morph. Moreover, in the case of R. padi, a strong clone-morph interaction was observed.Both apterous and alate morphs were shown to have a higher rate of increase in R. padi than in S. avenae.Various models were fitted to aphid daily rate of reproduction. Both types of model and quality of fit depended mainly on the morph.
Résumé Cette étude a eu pour but d'évaluer l'importance de facteurs intrinsèques (clone et morphe) sur les paramètres du taux d'accroissement de Sitobion avenae (F.) et Rhopalosiphum padi (L.).Pour chaque espèce, trois clones originaires de régions océaniques françaises ont été comparés à 20 °C pour les morphes exules ailés et exules aptères.L'effet du clone est significatif sur l'âge reproducteur (durée comprise entre la naissance du puceron et le début de sa phase de reproduction) et sur le taux intrinsèque d'accroissement naturel. Il est plus faible que celui du morphe avec lequel il intéragit dans le cas de R. padi.Les différences interspécifiques relevées mettent en évidence les capacités d'accroissement supérieures de R. padi par rapport à celles de S. avenae, dans le cas des ailés comme dans celui des aptères.Enfin, différents modèles ont été appliqués aux données de reproduction journalière des pucerons. Le type et la qualité des ajustements varient essentiellement en fonction du morphe.

Over a 2-year period field trials were conducted to assess the potential to disrupt mating ofPlutella xylostella (L.) using a commercial rope formulation of a 70:30 mixture of (Z)-11-hexadecenal and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, two components of the sex pheromone of the female. Screened field cages were placed into blocks of cabbage which were either treated with the pheromone or left untreated. Different densities of P. xylostella pupae were placed into each cage and then larval and pupal counts were made of the subsequent generation. In addition, sentinel females at mating stations were placed in each cage to assess the influence of the pheromone on the ability of males to locate and mate with females. Likewise, we used pheromone traps to assess whether the pheromone treatment influenced the ability of males to locate a pheromone source. In both years larval and pupal populations, produced as a result of the original inoculation, did not differ between pheromone-treated and untreated fields. The effect of pheromone treatment on larval and pupal numbers did not change with changes in inoculated P. xylostella density, however, the density of P. xylostella released caused significant differences in the density of the subsequent generation. No significant differences were detected between the number of sentinel female adult P. xylostella that successfully mated in pheromone-treated fields compared with untreated fields. Significant differences in the numbers of male P. xylostella caught in pheromone-baited traps occurred between pheromone-treated and untreated fields in the first trial of 1993, and in the first trial in 1994 but not in the second trial. Such differences are often thought of as indications of mating disruption, although our other data presented in this study and reports from other studies indicate this is not always the case. Previous studies on mating disruption of P. xylostella in larger scale field tests have been performed but the results have been variable and often ambiguous. Stored product mites are pests of serious economic and medical importance. Recently, it has been shown that the biological control of these pests based on the use of natural compounds and predators had a high potential for success. In this study, we investigated the suppression of three pest mites by combination of the predator Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans, 1913 and bean flour (Phaseolus vulgaris), which is an antifeedant. Wheat grain (100 g) was contaminated with 100 individuals (Acarus siro (Linnaeus, 1758), Aleuroglyphus ovatus (Troupeau, 1878) or Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank, 1781)). We added bean flour in concentrations of 0, 1, 5 and 10 g kg−1 (wt/wt) and/or the predator with initial predator/prey ratios 0, 1/50, 1/25 and 1/10. The experiment was carried out under abiotic conditions that are optimal for pest development. After 21 days, pest and predators numbers were recorded. Application of flour significantly reduced populations of A. siro, slightly reduced populations of T. putrescentiae, the efficiency increased with increasing concentration. A. ovatus was not affect by bean flour. Populations of all mite species were successfully reduced by the sole addition of C. malaccensis, with a higher efficiency at higher Cheyletus ratios. The additive effect of the predator and flour was mainly apparent in the reduction of T. putrescientae. The population of C. malaccensis was not affected by the presence of bean flour. It is therefore recommended to use bean flour for the reduction of A. siro, a combination of bean flour and Cheyletus for the reduction of T. putrescientae, and only Cheyletus for the reduction of A. ovatus.
