Identifying the drivers of stomatal closure and leaf damage during stress in grasses is a critical prerequisite for understanding crop resilience. Here, we investigated whether changes in stomatal conductance (gs) during dehydration were associated with changes in leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), xylem cavitation, xylem collapse, and leaf cell turgor in wheat (Triticum aestivum). During soil dehydration, the decline of gs was concomitant with declining Kleaf under mild water stress. This early decline of leaf hydraulic conductance was not driven by cavitation, as the first cavitation events in leaf and stem were detected well after Kleaf had declined. Xylem vessel deformation could only account for <5% of the observed decline in leaf hydraulic conductance during dehydration. Thus, we concluded that changes in the hydraulic conductance of tissues outside the xylem were responsible for the majority of Kleaf decline during leaf dehydration in wheat. However, the contribution of leaf resistance to whole plant resistance was less than other tissues (<35% of whole plant resistance), and this proportion remained constant as plants dehydrated, indicating that Kleaf decline during water stress was not a major driver of stomatal closure.  相似文献

Gas exchange is constrained by the whole-plant hydraulic conductance (K plant). Leaves account for an important fraction of K plant and may therefore represent a major determinant of plant productivity. Leaf hydraulic conductance (K leaf) decreases with increasing water stress, which is due to xylem embolism in leaf veins and/or the properties of the extra-xylary pathway. Water flow through living tissues is facilitated and regulated by water channel proteins called aquaporins (AQPs). Here we assessed changes in the hydraulic conductance of Populus trichocarpa leaves during a dehydration-rewatering episode. While leaves were highly sensitive to drought, K leaf recovered only 2 hours after plants were rewatered. Recovery of K leaf was absent when excised leaves were bench-dried and subsequently xylem-perfused with a solution containing AQP inhibitors. We examined the expression patterns of 12 highly expressed AQP genes during a dehydration-rehydration episode to identify isoforms that may be involved in leaf hydraulic adjustments. Among the AQPs tested, several genes encoding tonoplast intrinsic proteins (TIPs) showed large increases in expression in rehydrated leaves, suggesting that TIPs contribute to reversing drought-induced reductions in K leaf. TIPs were localized in xylem parenchyma, consistent with a role in facilitating water exchange between xylem vessels and adjacent living cells. Dye uptake experiments suggested that reversible embolism formation in minor leaf veins contributed to the observed changes in K leaf.  相似文献

This study combines existing hydraulic principles with recently developed methods for probing leaf hydraulic function to determine whether xylem physiology can explain the dynamic response of gas exchange both during drought and in the recovery phase after rewatering. Four conifer species from wet and dry forests were exposed to a range of water stresses by withholding water and then rewatering to observe the recovery process. During both phases midday transpiration and leaf water potential (Ψleaf) were monitored. Stomatal responses to Ψleaf were established for each species and these relationships used to evaluate whether the recovery of gas exchange after drought was limited by postembolism hydraulic repair in leaves. Furthermore, the timing of gas-exchange recovery was used to determine the maximum survivable water stress for each species and this index compared with data for both leaf and stem vulnerability to water-stress-induced dysfunction measured for each species. Recovery of gas exchange after water stress took between 1 and >100 d and during this period all species showed strong 1:1 conformity to a combined hydraulic-stomatal limitation model (r2 = 0.70 across all plants). Gas-exchange recovery time showed two distinct phases, a rapid overnight recovery in plants stressed to <50% loss of leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and a highly Ψleaf-dependent phase in plants stressed to >50% loss of Kleaf. Maximum recoverable water stress (Ψmin) corresponded to a 95% loss of Kleaf. Thus, we conclude that xylem hydraulics represents a direct limit to the drought tolerance of these conifer species.  相似文献

The lignification of the leaf vein bundle sheath (BS) has been observed in many species and would reduce conductance from xylem to mesophyll. We hypothesized that lignification of the BS in lower‐order veins would provide benefits for water delivery through the vein hierarchy but that the lignification of higher‐order veins would limit transport capacity from xylem to mesophyll and leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf). We further hypothesized that BS lignification would mediate the relationship of Kleaf to vein length per area. We analysed the dependence of Kleaf, and its light response, on the lignification of the BS across vein orders for 11 angiosperm tree species. Eight of 11 species had lignin deposits in the BS of the midrib, and two species additionally only in their secondary veins, and for six species up to their minor veins. Species with lignification of minor veins had a lower hydraulic conductance of xylem and outside‐xylem pathways and lower Kleaf. Kleaf could be strongly predicted by vein length per area and highest lignified vein order (R2 = .69). The light‐response of Kleaf was statistically independent of BS lignification. The lignification of the BS is an important determinant of species variation in leaf and thus whole plant water transport.  相似文献

Diurnal depression of leaf hydraulic conductance in a tropical tree species   总被引:10,自引:2,他引:8
Diurnal patterns of hydraulic conductance of the leaf lamina (Kleaf) were monitored in a field‐grown tropical tree species in an attempt to ascertain whether the dynamics of stomatal conductance (gs) and CO2 uptake (Aleaf) were associated with short‐term changes in Kleaf. On days of high evaporative demand mid‐day depression of Kleaf to between 40 and 50% of pre‐dawn values was followed by a rapid recovery after 1500 h. Leaf water potential during the recovery stage was less than ?1 MPa implying a refilling mechanism, or that loss of Kleaf was not linked to cavitation. Laboratory measurement of the response of Kleaf to Ψleaf confirmed that leaves in the field were operating at water potentials within the depressed region of the leaf ‘vulnerability curve’. Diurnal courses of Kleaf and Ψleaf predicted from measured transpiration, xylem water potential and the Kleaf vulnerability function, yielded good agreement with observed trends in both leaf parameters. Close correlation between depression of Kleaf, gs and Aleaf suggests that xylem dysfunction in the leaf may lead to mid‐day depression of gas exchange in this species.  相似文献

Leaf hydraulic conductance and the vulnerability to water deficits have profound effects on plant distribution and mortality. In this study, we compiled a leaf hydraulic trait dataset with 311 species-at-site combinations from biomes worldwide. These traits included maximum leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), water potential at 50% loss of Kleaf (P50leaf), and minimum leaf water potential (Ψmin). Leaf hydraulic safety margin (HSMleaf) was calculated as the difference between Ψmin and P50leaf. Our results indicated that 70% of the studied species had a narrow HSMleaf (less than 1 MPa), which was consistent with the global pattern of stem hydraulic safety margin. There was a positive relationship between HSMleaf and aridity index (the ratio of mean annual precipitation to potential evapotranspiration), as species from humid sites tended to have larger HSMleaf. We found a significant relationship between Kleaf and P50leaf across global angiosperm woody species and within each of the different plant groups. This global analysis of leaf hydraulic traits improves our understanding of plant hydraulic response to environmental change.  相似文献

Stomatal regulation is crucial for forest species performance and survival on drought‐prone sites. We investigated the regulation of root and shoot hydraulics in three Pinus radiata clones exposed to drought stress and its coordination with stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (Ψleaf). All clones experienced a substantial decrease in root‐specific root hydraulic conductance (Kroot‐r) in response to the water stress, but leaf‐specific shoot hydraulic conductance (Kshoot‐l) did not change in any of the clones. The reduction in Kroot‐r caused a decrease in leaf‐specific whole‐plant hydraulic conductance (Kplant‐l). Among clones, the larger the decrease in Kplant‐l, the more stomata closed in response to drought. Rewatering resulted in a quick recovery of Kroot‐r and gs. Our results demonstrated that the reduction in Kplant‐l, attributed to a down regulation of aquaporin activity in roots, was linked to the isohydric stomatal behaviour, resulting in a nearly constant Ψleaf as water stress started. We concluded that higher Kplant‐l is associated with water stress resistance by sustaining a less negative Ψleaf and delaying stomatal closure.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) represent major constraints to photosynthetic rate (A), and these traits are expected to coordinate with leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) across species, under both steady‐state and dynamic conditions. However, empirical information about their coordination is scarce. In this study, Kleaf, gas exchange, stomatal kinetics, and leaf anatomy in 10 species including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms were investigated to elucidate the correlation of H2O and CO2 diffusion inside leaves under varying light conditions. Gas exchange, Kleaf, and anatomical traits varied widely across species. Under light‐saturated conditions, the A, gs, gm, and Kleaf were strongly correlated across species. However, the response patterns of A, gs, gm, and Kleaf to varying light intensities were highly species dependent. Moreover, stomatal opening upon light exposure of dark‐adapted leaves in the studied ferns and gymnosperms was generally faster than in the angiosperms; however, stomatal closing in light‐adapted leaves after darkening was faster in angiosperms. The present results show that there is a large variability in the coordination of leaf hydraulic and gas exchange parameters across terrestrial plant species, as well as in their responses to changing light.  相似文献

Background and AimsLeaf biomechanical resistance protects leaves from biotic and abiotic damage. Previous studies have revealed that enhancing leaf biomechanical resistance is costly for plant species and leads to an increase in leaf drought tolerance. We thus predicted that there is a functional correlation between leaf hydraulic safety and biomechanical characteristics.MethodsWe measured leaf morphological and anatomical traits, pressure–volume parameters, maximum leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf-max), leaf water potential at 50 % loss of hydraulic conductance (P50leaf), leaf hydraulic safety margin (SMleaf), and leaf force to tear (Ft) and punch (Fp) of 30 co-occurring woody species in a sub-tropical evergreen broadleaved forest. Linear regression analysis was performed to examine the relationships between biomechanical resistance and other leaf hydraulic traits.Key ResultsWe found that higher Ft and Fp values were significantly associated with a lower (more negative) P50leaf and a larger SMleaf, thereby confirming the correlation between leaf biomechanical resistance and hydraulic safety. However, leaf biomechanical resistance showed no correlation with Kleaf-max, although it was significantly and negatively correlated with leaf outside-xylem hydraulic conductance. In addition, we also found that there was a significant correlation between biomechanical resistance and the modulus of elasticity by excluding an outlier.ConclusionsThe findings of this study reveal leaf biomechanical–hydraulic safety correlation in sub-tropical woody species.  相似文献

The vulnerability to drought and freeze stress was measured in young plants of Quercus ilex L. growing in the field in two natural sites within the Italian distribution area of this species, i.e. Sicily (Southern Mediterranean Basin) and Venezia Giulia (Northeastern Italy), respectively. In particular, the resistance strategies adopted by Q. ilex to withstand the two stresses were estimated in terms of seasonal and/or diurnal changes in leaf conductance to water vapour (gL), water potential (L) and relative water content (RWC) as well as of xylem embolism in the stem and root hydraulic conductance (KRL). Sicilian (SI) plants showed to reduce water loss by stomatal closure (gL decreased) in summer, thus maintaining average RWCs at 88–90%. Moreover, SI plants showed considerable resistance to xylem cavitation in the stem (the loss of hydraulic conductance, PLC, was less than 12% throughout the year) and to maintain the hydraulic conductance of their roots (KRL), constantly high even in summer. Plants growing in Venezia Giulia (VG plants), on the contrary, underwent leaf dehydration in the winter due to freeze stress so that RWC measured in April was still 78% on a diurnal basis. This was apparently due to consistent xylem embolism in the stem. In fact, PLC was as high as 40% between November and March. Only in the summer was PLC similar to that recorded in SI plants. Moreover, KRL of VG plants decreased in November from about 1.5 to 0.8×10–4 kg s–1 m–2 MPa–1, i.e. about 50%, and in February KRL dropped further to 0.4×10–4 kg s–1 m–2 MPa–1. On the basis of the above, we conclude that: (a) Q. ilex was more sensitive to freeze than to drought stress so that freeze stress can be considered as a factor limiting the distribution area of this species; (b) drought and freeze stress were faced by Q. ilex adopting two different resistance strategies, i.e. drought avoidance based on water saving in Sicily and freeze tolerance in Venezia Giulia.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Leaf hydraulic properties are strongly linked with transpiration and photosynthesis in many species. However, it is not known if gas exchange and hydraulics will have co-ordinated responses to climate change. The objective of this study was to investigate the responses of leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) in Glycine max (soybean) to growth at elevated [CO2] and increased temperature compared with the responses of leaf gas exchange and leaf water status.

Methods

Two controlled-environment growth chamber experiments were conducted with soybean to measure Kleaf, stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthesis (A) during growth at elevated [CO2] and temperature relative to ambient levels. These results were validated with field experiments on soybean grown under free-air elevated [CO2] (FACE) and canopy warming.

Key results

In chamber studies, Kleaf did not acclimate to growth at elevated [CO2], even though stomatal conductance decreased and photosynthesis increased. Growth at elevated temperature also did not affect Kleaf, although gs and A showed significant but inconsistent decreases. The lack of response of Kleaf to growth at increased [CO2] and temperature in chamber-grown plants was confirmed with field-grown soybean at a FACE facility.

Conclusions

Leaf hydraulic and leaf gas exchange responses to these two climate change factors were not strongly linked in soybean, although gs responded to [CO2] and increased temperature as previously reported. This differential behaviour could lead to an imbalance between hydraulic supply and transpiration demand under extreme environmental conditions likely to become more common as global climate continues to change.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rates vary widely across plant species. Leaf hydraulic conductance (k leaf) tends to change with g s, to maintain hydraulic homeostasis and prevent wide and potentially harmful fluctuations in transpiration-induced water potential gradients across the leaf (ΔΨ leaf). Because arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis often increases g s in the plant host, we tested whether the symbiosis affects leaf hydraulic homeostasis. Specifically, we tested whether k leaf changes with g s to maintain ΔΨ leaf or whether ΔΨ leaf differs when g s differs in AM and non-AM plants. Colonization of squash plants with Glomus intraradices resulted in increased g s relative to non-AM controls, by an average of 27% under amply watered, unstressed conditions. Stomatal conductance was similar in AM and non-AM plants with exposure to NaCl stress. Across all AM and NaCl treatments, k leaf did change in synchrony with g s (positive correlation of g s and k leaf), corroborating leaf tendency toward hydraulic homeostasis under varying rates of transpirational water loss. However, k leaf did not increase in AM plants to compensate for the higher g s of unstressed AM plants relative to non-AM plants. Consequently, ΔΨ leaf did tend to be higher in AM leaves. A trend toward slightly higher ΔΨ leaf has been observed recently in more highly evolved plant taxa having higher productivity. Higher ΔΨ leaf in leaves of mycorrhizal plants would therefore be consistent with the higher rates of gas exchange that often accompany mycorrhizal symbiosis and that are presumed to be necessary to supply the carbon needs of the fungal symbiont.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Increasing physical water scarcity is a major constraint for irrigated rice (Oryza sativa) production. ‘Aerobic rice culture’ aims to maximize yield per unit water input by growing plants in aerobic soil without flooding or puddling. The objective was to determine (a) the effect of water management on root morphology and hydraulic conductance, and (b) their roles in plant–water relationships and stomatal conductance in aerobic culture.

Methods

Root system development, stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (Ψleaf) were monitored in a high-yielding rice cultivar (‘Takanari’) under flooded and aerobic conditions at two soil moisture levels [nearly saturated (> –10 kPa) and mildly dry (> –30 kPa)] over 2 years. In an ancillary pot experiment, whole-plant hydraulic conductivity (soil-leaf hydraulic conductance; Kpa) was measured under flooded and aerobic conditions.

Key Results

Adventitious root emergence and lateral root proliferation were restricted even under nearly saturated conditions, resulting in a 72–85 % reduction in total root length under aerobic culture conditions. Because of their reduced rooting size, plants grown under aerobic conditions tended to have lower Kpa than plants grown under flooded conditions. Ψleaf was always significantly lower in aerobic culture than in flooded culture, while gs was unchanged when the soil moisture was at around field capacity. gs was inevitably reduced when the soil water potential at 20-cm depth reached –20 kPa.

Conclusions

Unstable performance of rice in water-saving cultivations is often associated with reduction in Ψleaf. Ψleaf may reduce even if Kpa is not significantly changed, but the lower Ψleaf would certainly occur in case Kpa reduces as a result of lower water-uptake capacity under aerobic conditions. Rice performance in aerobic culture might be improved through genetic manipulation that promotes lateral root branching and rhizogenesis as well as deep rooting.  相似文献

Studies on the temperature (T) responses of photosynthesis and leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) are important to plant gas exchange. In this study, the temperature responses of photosynthesis and Kleaf were studied in Shanyou 63 (Oryza sativa) and Yannong 19 (Triticum aestivum). Leaf water potential (Ψleaf) was insensitive to T in Shanyou 63, while it significantly decreased with T in Yannong 19. The differential ΨleafT relationship partially accounted for the differing gmT relationships, where gm was less sensitive to T in Yannong 19 than in Shanyou 63. With different gmT and ΨleafT relationships, the temperature responses of photosynthetic limitations were surprisingly similar between the two lines, and the photosynthetic rate was highly correlated with gm. With the increasing T, Kleaf increased in Shanyou 63 while it decreased in Yannong 19. The different KleafT relationships were related to different ΨleafT relationships. When excluding the effects of water viscosity and Ψleaf, Kleaf was insensitive to T in both lines. gm and Kleaf were generally not coordinated across different temperatures. This study highlights the importance of Ψleaf on leaf carbon and water exchanges, and the mechanisms for the gmT and KleafT relationships were discussed.  相似文献

In habitats with low water availability, a fundamental challenge for plants will be to maximize photosynthetic C-gain while minimizing transpirational water-loss. This trade-off between C-gain and water-loss can in part be achieved through the coordination of leaf-level photosynthetic and hydraulic traits. To test the relationship of photosynthetic C-gain and transpirational water-loss, we grew, under common growth conditions, 18 C4 grasses adapted to habitats with different mean annual precipitation (MAP) and measured leaf-level structural and anatomical traits associated with mesophyll conductance (gm) and leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf). The C4 grasses adapted to lower MAP showed greater mesophyll surface area exposed to intercellular air spaces (Smes) and adaxial stomatal density (SDada) which supported greater gm. These grasses also showed greater leaf thickness and vein-to-epidermis distance, which may lead to lower Kleaf. Additionally, grasses with greater gm and lower Kleaf also showed greater photosynthetic rates (Anet) and leaf-level water-use efficiency (WUE). In summary, we identify a suite of leaf-level traits that appear important for adaptation of C4 grasses to habitats with low MAP and may be useful to identify C4 species showing greater Anet and WUE in drier conditions.  相似文献

Recent work has shown that stomatal conductance (gs) and assimilation (A) are responsive to changes in the hydraulic conductance of the soil to leaf pathway (KL), but no study has quantitatively described this relationship under controlled conditions where steady‐state flow is promoted. Under steady‐state conditions, the relationship between gs, water potential (Ψ) and KL can be assumed to follow the Ohm's law analogy for fluid flow. When boundary layer conductance is large relative to gs, the Ohm's law analogy leads to gs = KLsoilleaf)/D, where D is the vapour pressure deficit. Consequently, if stomata regulate Ψleaf and limit A, a reduction in KL will cause gs and A to decline. We evaluated the regulation of Ψleaf and A in response to changes in KL in well‐watered ponderosa pine seedlings (Pinus ponderosa). To vary KL, we systematically reduced stem hydraulic conductivity (k) using an air injection technique to induce cavitation while simultaneously measuring Ψleaf and canopy gas exchange in the laboratory under constant light and D. Short‐statured seedlings (< 1 m tall) and hour‐long equilibration times promoted steady‐state flow conditions. We found that Ψleaf remained constant near ? 1·5 MPa except at the extreme 99% reduction of k when Ψleaf fell to ? 2·1 MPa. Transpiration, gs, A and KL all declined with decreasing k (P < 0·001). As a result of the near homeostasis in bulk Ψleaf, gs and A were directly proportional to KL (R2 > 0·90), indicating that changes in KL may affect plant carbon gain.  相似文献

We investigated how leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) of loblolly pine trees is influenced by soil nitrogen amendment (N) in stands subjected to ambient or elevated CO2 concentrations (CO2a and CO2e, respectively). We also examined how Kleaf varies with changes in reference leaf water potential (Ψleaf‐ref) and stomatal conductance (gs‐ref) calculated at vapour pressure deficit, D of 1 kPa. We detected significant reductions in Kleaf caused by N and CO2e, but neither treatment affected pre‐dawn or midday Ψleaf. We also detected a significant CO2e‐induced reduction in gs‐ref and Ψleaf‐ref. Among treatments, the sensitivity of Kleaf to Ψleaf was directly related to a reference Kleaf (Kleaf‐ref computed at Ψleaf‐ref). This liquid‐phase response was reflected in a similar gas‐phase response, with gs sensitivity to D proportional to gs‐ref. Because leaves represented a substantial component of the whole‐tree conductance, reduction in Kleaf under CO2e affected whole‐tree water use by inducing a decline in gs‐ref. The consequences of the acclimation of leaves to the treatments were: (1) trees growing under CO2e controlled morning leaf water status less than CO2a trees resulting in a higher diurnal loss of Kleaf; (2) the effect of CO2e on gs‐ref was manifested only during times of high soil moisture.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate stomatal regulation in maize seedlings during progressive soil drying and to determine the impact of stomatal movement on photosynthetic activity. In well-watered and drought-stressed plants, leaf water potential (Ψ leaf), relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (g s), photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, leaf instantaneous water use efficiency (iWUEleaf), and abscisic acid (ABA) and zeatin-riboside (ZR) accumulation were measured. Results showed that g s decreased significantly with progressive drought and stomatal limitations were responsible for inhibiting photosynthesis in the initial stages of short-term drought. However, after 5 days of withholding water, non-stomatal limitations, such as damage to the PSII reaction center, became the main limiting factor. Stomatal behavior was correlated with changes in both hydraulic and chemical signals; however, changes in ABA and ZR occurred prior to any change in leaf water status. ABA in leaf and root tissue increased progressively during soil drying, and further analysis found that leaf ABA was negatively correlated with g s (R 2 = 0.907, p < 0.05). In contrast, leaf and root ZR decreased gradually. ZR in leaf tissue was positively correlated with g s (R 2 = 0.859, p < 0.05). These results indicate that ABA could induce stomatal closure, and ZR works antagonistically against ABA in stomatal behavior. In addition, the ABA/ZR ratio also had a strong correlation with g s, suggesting that the combined chemical signal (the interaction between ABA and cytokinin) plays a role in coordinating stomatal behavior. In addition, Ψ leaf and RWC decreased significantly after only 3 days of drought stress, also affecting stomatal behavior.

The water status of Fagus sylvatica L. and Quercus petraea (Matt) Liebl. was analysed during a cycle of progressive natural drought in southern Europe. Predawn (Ψpd) and midday water potential were measured in transpiring (Ψleaf) and non-transpiring leaves (Ψxyl). Furthermore, photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) and sap flow (Fd) were recorded on the same dates. Apparent leaf specific hydraulic conductance in the soil–plant–air continuum (Kh) and whole tree hydraulic conductance (Khsf) were calculated by using the simple analogy of the Ohm’s law. Kh was estimated at different points in the pathway as the ratio between transpiration (E) in the uppermost canopy leaves at midday and the gradient of water potential in the different compartments of the continuum soil–roots–stem–branches–leaves. There was a progressive decrease in water potential measured on non-transpiring leaves at the base of tree crown in both species (Ψlxyl) from the beginning of the growing season to the end of summer. A similar decrease was shown in shoot water potential (Ψuxyl) at the uppermost canopy. Predawn water potential (Ψpd) was high in both species until late July (28 July); afterwards, a significant decrease was registered in F. sylvatica and Q. petraea with minimum values of −0.81±0.03 and −0.75±0.06 MPa, respectively, by 15 September. In both species, leaf specific hydraulic conductance in the overall continuum soil–plant–air (Kh) decreased progressively as water stress increases. Minimum values of Kh and Khsf were recorded when Ψpd was lower. However, Q. petraea showed higher Kh than F. sylvatica for the same Ψpd. The decrease in Kh with water stress was mainly linked to its fall from the soil to the lowermost canopy (Ksrs). Nevertheless, a significant resistance in the petiole–leaf lamina (Kpl) was also recorded because significant differences in all dates were found on Ψ between transpiring and non-transpiring leaves from the same shoot. The decline in Kh was followed by an increase in stomatal control of daily water losses through the decrease of stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) during the day. It promoted a seasonal increase in the stomatal limitation to carbon dioxide uptake for photosynthesis (A). These facts were more relevant in F. sylvatica, which had concurrently a higher decline in water use at the tree level than Q. petraea. The results showed a strong coupling in F. sylvatica and Q. petraea between processes at leaf and tree level. It may be hypothesised a role of specific hydraulic conductance not only in the regulation of water losses by transpiration but also of carbon uptake.  相似文献
