Polymorphism of the dental formula was analyzed in a complex pedigree of Kerry Blue Terrier. A lack of one or more lower premolars was observed in some dogs. Two different patterns of missing teeth were identified. One pattern consisted in agenesis of a second premolar, often in combination with agenesis of neighbor teeth, including the fourth premolar. In the second pattern, agenesis of a fourth premolar was expressed as an isolated abnormality. It was shown previously that the first pattern is inherited as a recessive trait with near complete penetrance. In this work, the major-gene control was demonstrated for the second pattern. This abnormality develops in 70–80% of mutant homozygotes and in no more than 20% of heterozygotes and wild-type homozygotes. It was shown that the two dentition abnormalities are controlled by different genes, which were designated LPA2 and LPA4 (Lower Premolar Agenesis).  相似文献

The teeth of modern Skolt Lapps from northern Finland are considerably larger than those of their ancestors of the Eighteenth Century. The increase is probably attributable to improved nutrition. One or more teeth, excluding the third molars, were congenitally missing in 18.8% of the population aged 5 to 20 years. Relative to a standard the anterior teeth are larger than the posterior teeth, particularly the premolars. This accords well with the hypodontia pattern which is dominated by premolar agenesis.  相似文献

In a sample of 24 skulls of the rare colobine monkey of China,Rhinopithecus roxellana, agenesis of the permanent upper third premolar was observed in 8 specimens (33%). Two of the individuals (8% of the sample) showed unilateral agenesis, while six (25%) showed bilateral agenesis. All of the affected individuals appear to have originated from two areas in central Sichuan Province in China, Moupin (Baoxing) and Wen Chuan, that lie approximately 120 km apart on the western rim of the Sichuan Basin. In this species agenesis of the upper third premolar was generally accompanied by rotation of the upper fourth premolar, but not by any other observable variation in tooth size, morphology, or number. Further, dental agenesis in this species appears to have had no effect craniofacial morphology. In certain human populations, a high prevalence of dental agenesis has been associated with small population effects and genetic isolation. Premolar agenesis inR. roxellana can probably be traced to a similar origin. Reconstruction of the evolutionary history of the species indicates that a severe reduction of the geographic range of the species occurred as a result of climatic deterioration during the Late Pleistocene. Although large numbers of populations appear to have become extinct, others survived to give rise to the modern populations of the species that inhabit China today. The two populations showing a high prevalence of premolar agenesis appear to have originated from one that passed through a population bottleneck and suffered the consequences of founder effect in the Late Pleistocene. This interpretation is supported by evidence of dental agenesis in a population of an insectivore species from the same region and by the fact that premolar agenesis is not found in any of the other species ofRhinopithecus. There is no evidence to support the interpretation that dental agenesis inR. roxellana is due to natural selection, mutation or an evolutionary force other than a small population effect.  相似文献

Purpose of this study was to investigate the most common position of the mental foramen in a selected Turkish population. The study sample included three hundred and sixty one panoramic radiographs of selected Turkish population taken in Faculty of Dentistry, University of Gazi. The most common position of the mental foramen was between the first premolar and the second premolar (71.5%). The mental foramen was symmetrical in 90.4% of patients. In this study, the difference of the location of the mental foramen in different ethnics groups was discussed. Clinicians and anthropologists should expect to find the position of the mental foramen to be symmetrical and between the first premolar and the second premolar teeth.  相似文献

The wear on the occlusal surfaces of male babirusa cheek teeth was evaluated in 53 skulls of Babyrousa babyrussa from Buru and the Sula Islands and 87 skulls of B. celebensis from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Based on the comparative lengths of their continually growing maxillary canine teeth, the skulls were divided into five ‘age categories’ (A–E). Numerical and symbolic codes representing tooth wear were applied to each pillar (cusp region) of the mandibular and maxillary permanent third and fourth premolar teeth, and the first, second and third permanent molar teeth. There was no significant difference between the tooth wear patters of skulls in groups A and B, or in groups C and D, and so these were amalgamated. There was close correspondence in wear patterns between each side of the mouth in both species and in each age group. The wear patterns of the mandibular and maxillary teeth, although not identical, were very similar, as were the wear patterns of both species. In group A + B for both species tooth wear was relatively slight, with the M1 teeth experiencing most relative wear. There was almost no wear of the M3 teeth. In group C + D substantial wear of upper and lower M1 was evident. In group E more widespread wear of the cheek teeth was seen, with increased severity of M1 tooth wear, yet there was comparatively much less M2 and M3 tooth wear. The pattern of cheek tooth wear of the Babyrousa spp. was different from that shown by Sus scrofa. Differences in diet selection and processing were highlighted as potential contributing factors. The pattern of cheek tooth wear in male babirusa was not adequate for use to monitor their age.  相似文献

Structures suppressed during evolution can be retraced due to atavisms and vestiges. Atavism is an exceptional emergence of an ancestral form in a living individual. In contrast, ancestral vestige regularly occurs in all members of an actual species. We surveyed data about the vestigial and atavistic teeth in mammals, updated them by recent findings in mouse and human embryos, and discussed their ontogenetic and evolutionary implications. In the mouse incisor and diastema regions, dental placodes are transiently distinct being morphologically similar to the early tooth primordia in reptiles. Two large vestigial buds emerge in front of the prospective first molar and presumably correspond to the premolars eliminated during mouse evolution. The incorporation of the posterior premolar vestige into the lower first molar illustrates the putative mechanism of evolutionary disappearance of the last premolar in the mice. In mutant mice, devious development of the ancestral tooth primordia might lead to their revivification and origin of atavistic supernumerary teeth. Similarity in the developmental schedule between three molars in mice and the respective third and fourth deciduous premolar and the first molar in humans raises a question about putative homology of these teeth. The complex patterning of the vestibular and dental epithelium in human embryos is reminiscent of the pattern of "Zahnreihen" in lower vertebrates. A hypothesis was presented about the developmental relationship between the structures at the external aspect of the dentition in mammals (oral vestibule, pre-lacteal teeth, paramolar cusps/teeth), the tooth glands in reptiles, and the earliest teeth in lower vertebrates.  相似文献

Fifty mandibles belonging to the Byzantium period were studied in order to determine to racial differences about of the localization of the mental foramen according to the mandibular teeth. Mandibles of adult males without missing teeth, proximal decay and proximal attrition were used. On the right side, the most common position of the mental foramen was between the first and second lower teeth (50%), whereas on the left side, the most common position was in line with the longitudinal axis of the lower second premolar tooth (46%). Because of materials including mostly Alpine's and a few of Mediterranean subraces, two different positions of the mental foramen were determined in high similar ratios.  相似文献

Early diagnosis of agenesis of the mandibular second premolar (P2) enhances management of the dental arch in the growing child. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship in the development of the mandibular first molar (M1) and first premolar (P1) at early stages of P2 (second premolar). Specifically, we ask if the likelihood of P2 agenesis can be predicted from adjacent developing teeth. We selected archived dental panoramic radiographs with P2 at crown formation stages (N = 212) and calculated the likelihood of P2 at initial mineralisation stage ‘Ci’ given the tooth stage of adjacent teeth. Our results show that the probability of observing mandibular P2 at initial mineralisation stage ‘Ci’ decreased as both the adjacent P1 and M1 matured. The modal stage at P2 ‘Ci’ was P1 ‘Coc’ (cusp outline complete) and M1 ‘Crc’ (crown complete). Initial mineralisation of P2 was observed up to P1 ‘Crc’ and M1 stage ‘R½’ (root half). The chance of observing P2 at least ‘Coc’ (coalescence of cusps) was considerably greater prior to these threshold stages compared to later stages of P1 and M1. These findings suggest that P2 is highly unlikely to develop if P1 is beyond ‘Crc’ and M1 is beyond ‘R½’.  相似文献

Summary A pattern of obliquely oriented bands has been demonstrated at the surface of the maturation zone enamel of freshly dissected rat incisor teeth as they dry. This pattern, of which there is no evidence in the fresh, wet, or completely dry teeth, consists of up to 4 or 5 pale grey, translucent linesseparated by wider, whiter, more opaque bands and has been shown to correlate directly with a similar pattern seen on the same teeth after staining with toluidine blue and previously described as the maturation cycle banding pattern (Boyde and Reith 1982). A second pattern comprised of much more closely spaced bands is also described. In this pattern, which again correlates with a similar pattern seen after toluidine blue staining, translucent and opaque bands cross the maturation zone more transversely and have a width of about 200 microns, approximating to 8h tooth growth. It is postulated that these banding patterns reflect alternately different drying rates of the maturation zone enamel and that they may correspond to cyclical changes in the hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of enamel matrix both on a daily basis and on a larger time scale.  相似文献

This report concerns one problem encountered with application of American white dental formation standards to age assessment of sub-adults of archaeological context. Dental ages for eight mandibular permanent teeth and maxillary central and lateral incisors of Arikara Indian immature skeletons were determined according to degree of crown or root mineralization. Ages assigned to the various teeth of the same individual were compared. They showed similarities as well as patterned differences. First premolar, second premolar, and mandibular incisor ages closely approximated one another. In relation to this complex, dental ages for maxillary incisors and mandibular second molars were older by 0.5 to 1.1 years. Developmental ages assigned to individuals on the basis of third molars showed relative advancement by more than 2 years. The systematic occurrence of these observations reflects more than just individual variability; it shows the presence of population differences in tooth-formation timing. Timing differences complicate assessment of dental ages needed for growth or demographic studies.  相似文献

本文将巫山似人下颌及其牙齿与东非早更新世人属 ,Dmanisi直立人以及元谋的禄丰古猿等做了比较。结果发现巫山标本的尺寸比前二者都小得多 ,而与后者很相符。巫山标本被有些人作为归属人属根据的那些特征大多是人和猿共具者 ,其中前臼齿齿根分叉则是在人类罕见 ,却是禄丰古猿的特征之一 ,前臼齿前接触面位置和跟座比例则反映猿类特征。最接近巫山下颌者是禄丰古猿 ,其间有否祖裔关系尚待更多标本来论证。  相似文献

It has been suggested that the fossil Neandertal from La Chapelle-aux-Saints was so toothless that he would have had to have his food pre-chewed or otherwise prepared for him. This has also led to the inference that a high level of altruistic social behavior was characteristic of Neandertals. This appears to be in keeping with a current trend among anthropologists to upgrade the cultural and evolutionary status of Neandertals. Close examination of the recovered teeth and the condition of the alveoli indicates that the "old man" of La Chapelle-aux-Saints had upper and lower incisor, canine and premolar teeth on the left side intact and probably in occlusion, and that the same was true of these teeth in the right maxilla. Mandibular incisors, canine, and first premolar had probably been lost to a tumor or abscessing on the right side, but this pathology may have developed near the time of death. The right mandibular second premolar was probably functional, although tilted similarly to the intact premolar on the left. It is very unlikely that the individual was unable to chew food. The dentition thus gives no reliable evidence of altruistic behavior by his cohorts. This study may also relate to hypotheses concerning the ancestry of anatomically modern humans.  相似文献

We present new data on the prevalence and patterning of the maxillary premolar accessory ridge (MxPAR), a common but understudied morphological dental trait that is expressed as a linear elevation extending from the buccal cusp ridge to the medial sulcus of maxillary premolar teeth. A total of 579 sets of dental casts, representing six ethnic groups, were scored using the five‐grade system proposed by Burnett et al. (2010). The frequency and distribution of the MxPAR were determined by tooth type, sex, side, locus and ethnicity, and the applicability of the scoring system was assessed. The MxPAR was found in approximately two‐thirds of premolar teeth, more often on second than first premolars, and more often on the distal aspect of the occlusal surface than the mesial. There was some evidence that more pronounced forms of the feature occurred more often in males than females, and that there may be some directionality in its expression between sides. Variation was also noted in the frequency of occurrence and degree of expression of the MxPAR between ethnic groups. Intra‐ and inter‐observer concordance rates for scoring the MxPAR were low, confirming that it was difficult to score the trait identically on two different occasions. Our findings have clarified the distribution of the MxPAR within the dentition and between ethnic groups, and highlighted the need for researchers to carry out thorough replicability studies and to decide on an appropriate breakpoint for determining presence or absence of this feature before embarking on genetic studies or bio‐distance analyses. The teeth of over 5,000 Teso schoolchildren members of a Nilo-Hamitic tribe in East Africa, were examined for morphological traits. There was a significant difference between the sexes in the number of cusps on the lower first and second molars, in the prevalence of the cusp of Carabelli, and in variability and agenesis of the upper lateral incisor. The results showed that females consistently favoured tooth reduction. There was also a tendency among those possessing extra cusps on one molar to have extra cusps or other molars. Records kept of the prevalence of the tribal custom of extracting lower central incisors indicated that this practise is rapidly dying out. On another group of teeth which had been extracted from adults common variations of root morphology were noted, together with the fissure pattern of the lower molars. Measurements were made of those teeth which were unworn and were not broken down by dental decay, and the lower third molar was found to be the largest tooth of the series. Observations on the pattern of molar tooth wear showed that the buccal as well as the occlusal surface was strongly affected.  相似文献

Tooth agenesis is the most common developmental dental anomaly. Absence of one or two permanent teeth is found in the majority of affected subjects. Very few patients suffer severe tooth agenesis. Recent studies revealed that WNT10A gene mutations caused syndromic and isolated severe tooth agenesis. In this study, to determine the contribution of WNT10A variants in different severities of tooth agenesis, we investigated the association between WNT10A variants and non-syndromic tooth agenesis in a Chinese population consisting of 505 tooth agenesis patients and 451 normal controls. Twenty-three novel non-synonymous variants were identified. WNT10A variants were detected in 15.8 % (75/474) of patients with 1–3 missing teeth and 51.6 % (16/31) of patients with 4 or more missing teeth. As compared with a frequency of 3.1 % in individuals with full dentition, variant allele frequencies were significantly elevated in both groups with tooth agenesis (p values of 1.00 × 10?6 and 3.89 × 10?23, respectively). Our findings showed that WNT10A variants were associated with non-syndromic tooth agenesis from mild to severe tooth agenesis, and the more severe tooth agenesis, the stronger association. Biallelic genotypes of WNT10A variants may have a pathogenic effect on tooth development. Presence of a single variant allele would be predisposing for causation with low penetrance. Together with WNT10A variant, there should be other genetic or environmental factors leading to biallelic variant-related variable clinical manifestations and single allele variant-related low penetrance. The frequent missing tooth positions in the WNT10A-related cases were consistent with that in the general population, suggesting WNT10A plays a critically important role in the etiology of general tooth agenesis.  相似文献

A laboratory microcosm has been designed for the cultivation of bacteria on surfaces subjected to an adjustable supply of fluids. Bacteria are grown as a microbial film on halved premolar teeth, mounted back to back. Synthetic saliva is dropped slowly over the teeth throughout experiments. A nutrient supplement is provided at regular intervals. The drops of fluid retained by the teeth can be sampled for metabolic end-products. Alternatively, a miniature glass electrode may be set into one half of a tooth assembly to monitor the pH continuously at the stagnation site between tooth segments. Up to six replicate culture flasks and six electrodes can be accommodated in a single experiment. Satisfactory electrode performance was maintained during 66 h experiments. In initial 48 h experiments, teeth were inoculated with Streptococcus rattus BHT or ' Streptococcus mitior' LPA-1 in pure culture and provided with 1% (w/v) glucose for 1 h every 6 h. Bacteria produced typical responses to glucose feeds leading to the formation of 'Stephan'-like curves of pH-fall. Under these conditions, ' Strep. mitior' was more acidogenic than Strep. rattus and the pattern of acid production was distinct for each organism.  相似文献
