In North America, spring migration routes and breeding distribution of northern pintails Anas acuta vary because some individuals opportunistically nest at mid‐latitudes in years when ephemeral prairie wetlands are available, whereas others regularly nest in arctic and sub‐arctic regions where wetland abundance is more constant. Less was known about migration routes and breeding distribution of pintails in East Asia. From 2007–2009 we marked 198 pintails on their wintering areas in Japan with satellite transmitters to: 1) document spring migration routes and summer distribution, 2) evaluate migratory connections and breeding season sympatry with North American pintails, and 3) determine if pintails used the same migration routes in fall as in spring. Most pintails (67%) migrated to the Kamchatka or Chukotka peninsulas in eastern Russia either directly from Japan or via Sakhalin Island, Russia. Remaining pintails primarily migrated to the Magadan region or Kolyma River Basin in eastern Russia via Sakhalin Island. The Chukotka Peninsula was the most common summer destination, with highest densities in the Anadyr Lowlands; a region also used by pintails that migrate from North America. One pintail migrated to St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, in spring and another briefly migrated to the western coast of Alaska in fall. Autumn migration routes generally mirrored spring migration although most pintails bypassed Sakhalin Island in fall. Compared to North American pintails, pintails that winter in Japan exhibited less variation in migration routes and breeding distribution, and nested at higher latitudes. In the Russian Far East there is no region with habitats comparable in extent to the ephemeral mid‐latitude wetlands of North America. Consequently, East Asian pintails mainly nest in arctic and sub‐arctic regions where annual consistency in wetlands promotes constancy in migration routes and breeding distribution. Breeding season sympatry between pintails from different continents results more from North American pintails migrating to eastern Russia than from Japanese pintails migrating to North America.

The role of migratory birds in the movement of the highly pathogenic (HP) avian influenza H5N1 remains a subject of debate. Testing hypotheses regarding intercontinental movement of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses will help evaluate the potential that wild birds could carry Asian-origin strains of HP avian influenza to North America during migration. Previous North American assessments of LPAI genetic variation have found few Asian reassortment events. Here, we present results from whole-genome analyses of LPAI isolates collected in Alaska from the northern pintail (Anas acuta), a species that migrates between North America and Asia. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed the genetic divergence between Asian and North American strains of LPAI, but also suggested inter-continental virus exchange and at a higher frequency than previously documented. In 38 isolates from Alaska, nearly half (44.7%) had at least one gene segment more closely related to Asian than to North American strains of LPAI. Additionally, sequences of several Asian LPAI isolates from GenBank clustered more closely with North American northern pintail isolates than with other Asian origin viruses. Our data support the role of wild birds in the intercontinental transfer of influenza viruses, and reveal a higher degree of transfer in Alaska than elsewhere in North America.

Contrary to chicken and livestock mammals, duck genome has not been explored much. Nowadays a relatively small number of reports on molecular variability and mapping of loci in Peking ducks has been published. Therefore, the objective of this study was to detect single loci affecting body weight, carcass and meat traits in Peking ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). The study was based on an F2 cross between two parental lines A-55 and GL-30. Phenotypes of 387 birds from generation F2 including carcass and meat quality traits were collected. Linkage map, of the linkage group CAU1, consisting of 29 microsatellite markers was constructed. One highly significant (p?p?

To test the female-advantage hypothesis that has been proposed to explain the adaptive significance of winter pair bonds in ducks, we examined the feeding and social behaviors of the northern pintail, Anas acuta. The female-advantage hypothesis assumes that male attendance offers paired females the benefits of increased social status and access to food, as well as less harassment from conspecifics, allowing them to spend more time feeding. Paired females dominated unpaired females, but neither time budgets of feeding nor frequency of feeding was significantly different between unpaired and paired females. The female-advantage hypothesis predicts that paired males spend less time feeding because they must closely guard their partners from harassment by male conspecifics. Paired males defended their mates by chasing and pecking the unpaired males. However, both time budgets of feeding and frequency of feeding were significantly higher in paired males than in unpaired males. Unpaired males frequently approached females while swimming. They performed courtship displays, mostly toward unpaired females. Paired males spent more time feeding by saving time and energy in courtship. We consider that the advantage of winter pairing for males comes from having a mate plus having an increase in feeding frequency. Received: February 20, 2000 / Accepted: May 22, 2000  相似文献

Summary Length of stopover and rate of weight gain (fat deposition) were studied in several species of passerine birds that stopped in southwestern Louisiana along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico after a trans-Gulf flight. Fatdepleted birds were more common among the birds that arrived at our study site in southwest Louisiana, though variability characterized our samples. Migrants that landed after encountering opposing winds or rain over the northern Gulf of Mexico were, on average, fatter than migrants that landed when weather was favorable for continued migration. Some of the variation in the energetic condition of arrivals may be explained by the location where migrants initiated crossings. Our simulation of flight over the Gulf of Mexico showed that with following winds a warbler can cross the Gulf of Mexico from Yucatan with fat reserves to spare, and stronger tailwinds make flights from as far south as Honduras energetically permissible. The length of stay after a trans-Gulf flight was related to the extent of fat-depletion upon arrival: lean birds stayed longer than fat migrants. Migrants stopped over for 1–7 days and replenished energy reserves at rates that varied from 0.19 g/d for Hooded Warblers (Wilsonia citrina) to 0.87 g/d for Ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapillus). Within each species, most individuals gained weight at a rapid rate, though a few individuals lost or maintained weight during their stay.

The autumn migration of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) was observed with radar and two types of light-trap at Langfang, Hebei province, China in 2001 and 2002. The sudden increase in the proportion of H. armigera moths in the searchlight trap indicated migration into the area and catches increased 10-fold during the second half of the night due to the landing of migrants before dawn. The moths' migratory flights took place at up to 2000 m above the ground, and moths flew differentially at times, and heights, when favourable (i.e. northerly) winds occurred. This facilitated the maximum displacement of moths towards the south during these 'return' migrations. The moths flew over the radar site at consistently high densities through the night, and the resulting flight durations of c. 10 h, at displacement speeds of 30-33 km h-1, would allow moths emerging in the far northeast of China (i.e. Liaoning and Jilin provinces and the Inner Mongolia autonomous region) to migrate into northern China (Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces). The association of the seasonal migratory movements of H. armigera with crops in northern China is briefly discussed.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for carcass and meat quality traits were detected in a sample of 224 progeny from four males in line VI and 12 females in line V of Beijing ducks. These lines were selected for high body weight at 42 days of age (line VI) or high egg production at 360 days of age (line V). Traits were weights of the carcass, head, neck, shanks, wings, legs, thighs, breast, heart, liver, crop, gizzard, abdominal fat (AFW) and skin fat, as well as fat thickness in the tail, and pH value, shear force, drip loss (DL) (%) and cooking loss (CL) (%) of the breast. Using a half-sib analysis with a multiple QTL model, linkage between the carcass and meat quality traits and 95 microsatellite markers was investigated. Eight genome-wide significant QTL for weight of crop, skin fat, liver, neck, shanks, wings, DL were detected on linkage groups CAU4 and CAU6. One genome-wide suggestive QTL and one chromosome-wide significant QTL for weight of breast were found on CAU1 and CAU4 respectively. Fifteen chromosome-wide suggestive QTL influencing weight of AFW, breast, crop, heart, carcass, thighs, liver, shanks, gizzard, fat thickness in tail, DL (%) and CL (%) were mapped on CAU2, CAU4, CAU5, CAU6, CAU7, CAU10 and CAU13. In addition, two linked QTL for weight of liver and DL (%) were located on CAU2 and CAU7 respectively. The detection of QTL in ducks is a step towards identification of genes influencing these traits and their use for genetic improvement in this species.

The energetic demands of long-distance migratory birds change drastically, depending on the stage of their life cycle. Changing demands are reflected in the up and down regulation of adipose tissue and organ mass. This paper presents new data on organ size changes during different stages of spring migration of garden warblers (Sylvia borin). Phenotypic mass changes were quantified in 13 organs of birds caught in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Egypt. We also sampled birds after a simulated stopover in Egypt. Some organs increased in mass up to about 1.5-fold during migration from Tanzania to Ethiopia, while some remained unchanged or even decreased in mass. During flight across the Sahara, nearly all organ masses including heart and flight muscles were reduced. Exceptionally large reductions (approximately 50%) were observed for liver, bile, spleen, kidney and digestive tract organs. The only exceptions were the testes, which increased 4-fold in mass. During the simulated stopover in Egypt, a significant recovery was observed for kidney, liver, heart, proventriculus, and small intestine. The testes continued to increase in mass. Flexible remodeling of organ size in the course of spring migration thus comprises significant changes for all quantified organs, with a variety of organ-specific patterns. Individual organ patterns are differentially shaped by functional aspects according to the different organ requirements in the alternation of flight and stopover phases, energetics, future demands, and protein requirements. Anticipatory mechanisms account for the size change of the testes, and we suggest the same for the kidney and the gall bladder.

The day lengths to which migratory birds are exposed depend on the timing and course of their journey. While winter day length is known to influence vernal events, it is not clear if birds also use day length during the spring migration as a temporal cue. We addressed this question by exposing captive stonechats (Saxicola torquata) to two different photoperiodic simulations of spring migration routes, following common winter conditions. One group experienced day lengths of the regular (“fast”) migration, and the other group, a “slow”, or more southerly originating, route. The resulting small, temporary differences in day length had lasting effects on the birds. The groups differed in migratory restlessness during and following exposure to different day lengths. “Slow” migrants continued nocturnal activity longer than “fast” migrants. Furthermore, all activities of the ensuing breeding season were delayed in the “slow” migrants, indicating a phase shift in their underlying annual rhythm. “Slow” migrants delayed terminating their reproductive stage by regressing testes and the cloacal protuberance later than the “fast” migrants. Molt started and ended later in “slow” migrants, but the duration of the molt was unaffected by spring day length. Finally, “fast” migrants resumed nightly restlessness earlier than “slow” migrants in late summer. These results demonstrate that Zugunruhe (migratory restlessness) and reproductive windows are not set exclusively during winter but can be modified by day length cues during the spring migration. Because migration modifies the day length exposure of birds, migration routes can have carry-over effects on the timing of breeding season events, including the completion of molt and initiation of autumnal nocturnal activity.

In winter, pen-reared and wild black ducks (Anas rubripes), and game farm and wild mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), maintained on pelleted feed, were sham-dosed or given one number 4 lead shot. After 14 days, dosed birds were redosed with two or four additional lead shot. This dosing regimen also was repeated in summer using pen-reared black ducks and game farm mallards. Based upon mortality, overt intoxication, weight change, delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity and protoporphyrin concentration, black ducks and mallards were found to be equally tolerant to lead shot. However, captive wild ducks were more sensitive than their domesticated counterparts, as evidenced by greater mortality and weight loss following lead shot administration. This difference may be related to stress associated with captivity and unnatural diet.

ABSTRACT Despite the critical role of fat in providing energy for large‐scale seasonal movements, little is known about the fatty acid composition of shorebird depot fat. Fatty acid composition is important because it may impact flight performance and seasonal migratory movements. We analyzed the fatty acid composition of depot fat of 12 species of shorebirds collected during spring migration at stopover sites in Kansas from two different subcutaneous fat depots (furcular and saddle depots). Five fatty acids (palmitate [16:0], palmitoleate [16:1], stearate [18:0], oleate [18:1n‐9], and vaccenate [18:1n‐7]) accounted for 70–96% of the total composition of depot fat despite the diverse foraging behaviors of the species sampled. This similarity in fatty acid profiles may be due to a limited availability of high‐lipid food items in the shallow water and mudflat habitats where migratory shorebirds forage in the southern Great Plains. In addition, shorebird depot fat was composed primarily of long‐chain saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (i.e., 16‐ and 18‐carbon), fatty acids thought to be more easily converted to energy during migration. Depot fat in the furcular depot was similar in composition to fat from the saddle depot, and we found no differences in fatty acid composition of the adipose tissue of males and females. Thus, our results suggest that representative shorebird depot fat fatty acid profiles can be obtained even if investigators are limited to sampling one sex, and that adipose tissue collected from saddle depots provide representative samples so biopsies can be limited to areas of the body with the least impact on flight performance.

To estimate differences in hormonal mechanisms of regulation of spring and autumn migration in European robins Erithacus rubecula, the plasma corticosterone (CORT) concentrations were compared in birds caught during both migratory seasons. A total of 414 blood samples were analyzed. It was found that the baseline and stress-induced CORT concentrations in free-living robins during spring migration were practically twice as high as during autumn passage. Our results demonstrate that autumn and spring migrations are independent stages of the avian annual cycle. Probably, the increase in the CORT concentrations in spring can be considered to be physiological preparation for the breeding season.

The migration of cereal aphids and the time of their arrival on winter cereal crops in autumn and spring are of particular importance for plant disease (e.g. barley yellow dwarf virus infection) and related yield losses. In order to identify days with migration potentials in autumn and spring, suction trap data from 29 and 45 case studies (locations and years), respectively, were set‐off against meteorological parameters, focusing on the early immigration periods in autumn (22 September to 1 November) and spring (1 May to 9 June). The number of cereal aphids caught in a suction trap increased with increasing temperature, global radiation and duration of sunshine and decreased with increasing precipitation, relative humidity and wind speed. According to linear regression analyses, the temperature, global radiation and wind speed were most frequently and significantly associated with migration, suggesting that they have a major impact on flight activity. For subsequent model development, suction trap catches from different case studies were pooled and binarily classified as days with or without migration as defined by a certain number of migrating cereal aphids. Linear discriminant analyses of several predictor variables (assessed during light hours of a given day) were then performed based on the binary response variables. Three models were used to predict days with suction trap catches ≥1, ≥4 or ≥10 migrating cereal aphids in autumn. Due to the predominance of Rhopalosiphum padi individuals (99.3% of total cereal aphid catch), no distinction between species (R. padi and Sitobion avenae) was made in autumn. As the suction trap catches were lower and species dominance changed in spring, three further models were developed for analysis of all cereal aphid species, R. padi only, and Metopolophium dirhodum and S. avenae combined in spring. The empirical, cross‐classification and receiver operating characteristic analyses performed for model validation showed different levels of prediction accuracy. Additional datasets selected at random before model construction and parameterization showed that predictions by the six migration models were 33–81% correct. The models are useful for determining when to start field evaluations. Furthermore, they provide information on the size of the migrating aphid population and, thus, on the importance of immigration for early aphid population development in cereal crops in a given season.

The digestive tracts of 771 lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens) collected from January to May 1983 from 12 locations (27 samples) were examined for helminth parasites to determine whether parasite species present in wintering geese or in spring migrants occurred independently of each other. Nine helminth species were identified. Seven had mean prevalences >5% and were the focus of this study. Six of those species were waterfowl generalists, one was a goose specialist. Our primary objective was to assess the potential contribution of factors, other than species interactions, in determining patterns of co-occurrence between helminth species. There were few negative relationships between helminth species, regardless of whether presence-absence or abundance data were used. However, some species pairs showed recurrent and significant co-occurrences. There were similar and significant effects of timing of sampling, host gender, and host age, on prevalence and mean abundance of particular species. Co-occurrences were found for those species that showed seasonal declines in prevalence, for those expected to have high colonizing ability based on host age profiles (using abundance data), and for abundant species that may have shared vectors or environmental conditions favorable for transmission. Thus, similarities between parasites in their abundance, transmission biology, and phenology seem sufficient to explain species co-occurrences without invoking other processes such as species interactions. The natural preindustrial ANC and pH decline associated with 22 melt events from 11 streams during spring flood of 1997 and 1998 in Northern Sweden have been assessed using the Boreal Dilution Model (BDM). The results show that the spring flood pH decline of 0.5 to 2.5 pH units in the streams was largely caused by natural processes. The most important driving factors influencing pH were TOC increase in combination with ANC dilution. The study also demonstrates that pH in some streams can decline to pH values close to 4.5 as a result of natural processes alone. In general the anthropogenic component of the pH decline was between 0.1 and 0.3 pH units superimposed on the natural pH decline. Furthermore, the anthropogenic contribution to ANC and pH decline generally followed the gradient of anthropogenic S deposition in the region. The sites with the greatest inferred anthropogenic influence are also those for which the assumptions used in the BDM were most sensitive. Nevertheless, the results from this study suggest that the regional impact of anthropogenic acid deposition on the ANC and pH in northern Sweden is currently limited.

Photoperiod is the most consistent environmental cue, and therefore, any change in anticipated light environment may affect subsequent response under long days. To test this hypothesis, photosensitive migratory redheaded buntings (Emberiza bruniceps) were exposed to altered photoperiods for 4 weeks [short days (SP, 8L:16D, group 1; control), short days alternated with constant dim light (SP/LLdim; group 2), constant dim light (LLdim; group 3) and constant bright light (LLbright; group 4)] before being transferred to long days (LP; 16L:8D) for 15 weeks. Group differences in long-day-induced responses were observed. The onset of migratory restlessness (Zugunruhe) was earliest in LLbright but persisted for maximum period in LLdim group. The LLdim group attained peak testis size significantly delayed and had more food consumption under long days. The results suggest that the altered photoperiodic exposure during photosensitive stage affects the seasonal phenotypes such as migration and reproduction in migratory buntings.

The consumption of nectar by European passerines has been reported only occasionally. In this study we investigated the occurrence and significance of nectar consumption of small passerine birds on spring migration after crossing the Mediterranean Sea. On Ventotene Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, four migrating species of Sylvia warblers [Garden Warbler S. borin , Subalpine Warbler S. cantillans , Whitethroat S. communis , Blackcap S. atricapilld ) regularly foraged on the two most common flowering species at that time of year, Brassica fruticulosa (Cruciferae) and giant fennel Ferula communis (Umbelliferae), while other species visited flowers only occasionally or not at all. Feeding behaviour, pollen traces on the head, and the examination of pollen and sugar remains in droppings indicated that nectar was the main target of the Sylvia warblers, rather than pollen or insects on the flowers. This was confirmed by food choice experiments indicating a clear preference by Garden Warblers and Whitethroats for nectar from artificial flowers over mealworms. Although conclusive experiments are not available, we hypothesize that nectar might be a diet easy to obtain and to absorb for birds after a long-distance flight in which they have incurred a depletion of energy stores and a reduction of the digestive tract.
