Golden perch larvae were stocked into a pond and inundated floodplain system in south-eastem Australia to determine movement patterns of the larvae onto and off the floodplain area. A total of 428 larvae were caught moving from the floodplain into the pond whereas only 18 were collected moving in the reverse direction. Thirty one larvae were caught at open water sites in the pond and floodplain, but only three were collected from sites on the floodplain which provided shade, timber or water flow. Transect samples from the pond also yielded more larvae than samples from floodplain transects, indicating a distinct spatial dispersion pattern in favour of the pond.
Spatial dispersion patterns of golden perch larvae appear to correspond with gradients in water quality between the pond and floodplain habitats. Stratification occurred in the pond but did not develop on the floodplain. Water on the floodplain was cooler, harder and contained less oxygen than surface water from the pond. Die1 oscillations occurred in water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide and acidity, but there was no significant corresponding pattern in the distribution of larvae.
Dispersion of golden perch larvae between pond and floodplain habitats is not random, and may be actively influenced by local-scale variations in water quality.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of feeding frequency on the activities of important degradative enzymes and potentially rate-limiting enzymes in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver and white epaxial muscle of Macquaria ambigua . Adult animals were either fed daily to satiety (fed), deprived of food for up to 180 days (starved), or starved for 150 days then fed daily to satiety for 30 days (starved/fed). The activities of lipolytic, glycogenolytic and glycolytic enzymes in the livers of starved fish were maintained as long as liver energy stores were available, but became significantly reduced following their exhaustion indicating a decline in metabolism in response to prolonged starvation. The response of epaxial muscle metabolism to changes in food availability was different to that of the liver, as no significant change in the activities of muscle lipolytic or glycogenolytic enzymes were observed in response to starvation. Muscle tissue metabolism was reduced after 60–90 days of starvation, but then returned to prestarvation levels.  相似文献

This study examined the toxicological and physiological responses of a commercially important coral-reef grouper, Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae), to injection of enriched stable-isotope barium chloride (BaCl2) solution. Thirty adult P. leopardus were subject to one of two 138BaCl2 injection treatment groups (corresponding to dosage rates of 2 and 4 mg 138Ba kg−1 body mass), and a control group in which fish were injected with 0·9% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Fish from each group were sampled at post-injection intervals of 48 h and 1, 3, 5 and 8 weeks, at which time blood and tissue samples were removed from each fish. Residual concentrations of Ba and 138Ba:137Ba ratios were measured in muscle, gonad, liver and bone tissues of each experimental fish. Elevated Ba concentrations were detected in all treatment fish tissue samples within 48 h post injection. Residual Ba concentrations decreased throughout the remainder of the 8 week experimental period in all tissues except bone. The BaCl2 injection had no significant effects on measured whole blood variables or on the plasma concentrations of steroid hormones. Enriched Ba stable isotopes can therefore be used at low dosages to mark larvae of commercially important marine fishes, without adverse effects on the health of the fishes or on humans who may consume them.  相似文献

A 2 year (2000–2001) radio‐tagging study was undertaken to investigate the movements of 51 golden perch Macquaria ambigua in the Murray River at Nyah in north‐western Victoria, Australia. During the winter of both years, golden perch did not undertake movements >5 km and displayed strong home range fidelity. In the first year of the study there was an increase in the distance of golden perch movement during late spring which coincided with increasing water temperature and river discharge. Nineteen golden perch were tracked during this period, of which 10 travelled downstream between 11 and 290 km. Seven of these fish moved to an area below the junction of the Murray and Wakool Rivers. Five golden perch travelled upstream between 13 and 35 km, four of which travelled to an area around the junction of the Murray River and Speewa Creek. The remaining four golden perch undertook localized movements of <5 km. Many of the long distance movements undertaken in spring 2000 were rapid and 53% of these golden perch returned to within 3 km of their release locations, indicating homing behaviour. Given that the rapid movements of golden perch in spring coincided with the known spawning season of this species, these long distance movements may be associated with reproductive strategy.  相似文献

At a time of the year when female golden perch Macquaria ambigua are not normally reproductively active, they were either fed daily to satiety (Fed), starved for 150 days (S150), or starved for 150 days then fed to satiety for 30 or 60 days (S150/F30 or S150/F60). Fish showed rapid growth and increased food conversion efficiency upon re-feeding relative to Fed animals. The hepatosomatic indices were not significantly different between Fed, S150/F30 and S150/F60 groups, but were significantly reduced in S150 animals. The gonadosomatic indices ( I G) for both Fed and S150 animals were not significantly different. However, the I G values for S150/F30 and S150/F60 animals of 6·74±1·22 and 7·84±1·12 were significantly elevated relative to Fed animals and approach those described for wild mature M. ambigua . Oocyte development in Fed and S150 animals did not proceed past the cortical alveoli or perinucleolar stages, respectively, but oocytes in both S150/F30 and S150/F60 animals had undergone vitellogenesis and were close to being mature. The concentration of oestradiol and testosterone in the plasma of S150/F30 and S150/F60 animals increased in accordance with the proposed role of these hormones in teleost reproductive cycles. The reproductive response of M. ambigua to starvation and re-feeding is well suited to reproductive success in temperate Australian rivers where food availability is unpredictable.  相似文献

Otolith shape and chemistry of Mediterranean horse mackerel Trachurus mediterraneus were simultaneously used to assess the feasibility of using these natural tags to discriminate populations throughout the Black, Marmara, Aegean and eastern Mediterranean Seas. Otolith shape and chemistry analyses showed a similar pattern of differentiation between T. mediterraneus stocks, revealing a clear discreteness of the middle Black Sea (Sinop) and Aegean Sea (Izmir) samples. Otolith upper side length and width, and Na, K, Mg and Ba, were the morphological traits and trace elements, respectively, differing most among groups. Overall assignment of individuals into their original sample was high for both otolith shape and chemistry. Highest reclassification rate was observed for the south-middle Black Sea and Aegean Sea samples for both analyses. Hierarchical cluster analyses also supported high differentiation of the south-middle Black Sea and Aegean Sea samples for both analyses. Mantel's test revealed that the Euclidean distance both for otolith shape ( r =−0·0917, P > 0·05) and chemistry ( r =−0·1248, P > 0·05) between these populations were not significantly associated with their geographical distances.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to negatively impact many freshwater environments due to reductions in stream‐flow and increases in temperature. These conditions, however, can already be found today in areas experiencing significant drought; current observations of species' responses to droughts can be used to make predictions about their future responses to climate change. Using otolith analysis, we recreated golden perch (Macquaria ambigua) growth chronologies from two temperate lake populations in southeastern Australia over a 15‐year period pre‐ and during a supraseasonal drought. We related interannual growth variation to landscape‐scale changes in temperature and hydrological regimes: fish growth declined as water levels in the lakes dropped during the drought, but this effect was offset by increased growth in warmer years. We hypothesize that golden perch are responding to fluctuations in food availability and intraspecific competition related to water level and to an optimization of physiological growth conditions related to increases in growing season length. Based on our analyses, we made predictions of future growth under a number of climate change scenarios that incorporate forecast deviations in stream‐flows and air temperature. Despite climatic models predicting significant declines in future water availability, fish growth may increase due to a disproportionate lengthening of the growing season. As the two lakes are at the limit of the southerly range of golden perch, our results are consistent with previous findings of climate‐change driven latitudinal range shifts in a poleward direction. We discuss assumptions concerning the constancy of ecological interactions into the future that warrant further study. Our research provides a novel application of biochronological analysis that could be used elsewhere to further our knowledge of species responses to changing environments.  相似文献

Otolith chemistry was used to study the stock structure of Icelandic cod Gadus morhua . Otoliths were collected from spawning cod at 12 and 17 different spawning locations around Iceland during the spawning season in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The otolith elemental composition of cod spawning north and south of Iceland differed substantially from each other, as did spawning cod below and above 125 m depth at the main spawning ground in the south of Iceland. Otolith chemistry differed more between locations than among years within a location, indicating temporal stability between the 2 years. The Icelandic cod stock is managed as a single stock. These results suggest, however, that optimal fisheries management may require different management units than are currently present.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that elemental composition of otoliths (sagittae) could be influenced by differences in natural prey type, young‐of‐the‐year bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix were captured immediately after their migration from oceanic waters into mid‐Atlantic Bight estuaries and fed either shrimp, Crangon septemspinosa and Palaemonetes spp. or fish Menidia menidia under similar temperature and salinity regimes in two separate 60 day experiments. Unlimited rations of fish and shrimp prey were provided in the first experiment which led to differences in bluefish growth rate between the two prey treatments; fish prey was limited in the second experiment to ensure that growth rates of bluefish in the two prey treatments were similar. Concentrations of seven elements in bluefish otoliths were determined using solution‐based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). There was no significant effect of diet on five of the seven elements examined (Na, Mg, K, Ca and Mn). The levels of Sr and Ba in the otoliths of shrimp‐fed bluefish, however, were significantly higher than fish‐fed bluefish in both experiments. Concentrations of Ba in shrimp‐fed bluefish otoliths were double that found in fish‐fed bluefish. The results suggest that diet can explain some of the variation in otolith chemistry previously attributed to physical and chemical properties of the water.  相似文献

The chemical composition of common carp Cyprinus carpio asteriscus (vaterite) and lapillus (aragonite) otoliths from the same individual and reflecting the same growth period was measured to (1) determine whether there are differences in the uptake of trace metals (Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ) and Sr isotope ratios (87Sr:86Sr) in co‐precipitating lapilli and asterisci and (2) compare the ability of multi‐element and isotopic signatures from lapilli, asterisci and both otolith types combined to discriminate C. carpio populations over a large spatial scale within a river basin. Depth profile analyses at the otolith edge using laser‐ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry showed that asterisci were enriched in Mg and Mn and depleted in Sr and Ba relative to lapilli, whilst 87Sr:86Sr values were nearly identical in both otolith types. Significant spatial differences among capture locations were found when all trace element and Sr isotope ratio data were aggregated into a multi‐element and isotopic signature, regardless of which otolith type was used or if they were used in combination. Discriminatory power was enhanced, however, when data for both otolith types were combined, suggesting that analysis of multiple otolith types may be useful for studies attempting to delineate C. carpio populations at finer spatial or temporal scales.  相似文献

In the spring of 1995, 18 million genetically marked yolk-sac cod larvae Gadus morhua were released into a 2.9-km2, nearly land-locked fjord in western Norway. Four quantitative surveys were conducted, 11, 33, and 63 days, and 1 year after the first release. Almost 100% of the collected cod larvae were successfully identified to GPI-1 * genotype. The marked cod larvae constituted 18% of all sampled cod larvae in the first survey and 9% in the two next. The average rate of mortality was estimated to be 23% day −1 for the first 10 days after release and 12% day −1 during the next month after release. After 1 year (April 1996), the number genetically marked I-group cod in the fjord was estimated to be <120. The effect of the historical programme of large-scale releases of yolk-sac larvae on recruitment were evaluated and found to be small.  相似文献

Obtaining biological and spatial information of the early life history (ELH) phases of fishes has been problematic, such that larval and juvenile phases are often referred to as the ‘black box’ of fish population biology and ecology. However, a potent source of life‐history data has been mined from the earstones (otoliths) of bony fishes. We systematically reviewed 476 empirical papers published between 2005 and 2012 (inclusive) that used otoliths to examine fish ELH phases, which has been an area of increasing attention over this period. We found that otolith‐based research during this period could be split into two broad themes according to whether studies examined: (i) biological objectives related to intrinsic processes such as larval and juvenile age, growth and mortality, and/or (ii) spatial objectives, such as habitat use, dispersal and migration. Surprisingly, just 24 studies (5%) explored a combined biological–spatial objective by simultaneously exploiting biological and spatial information from otoliths, suggesting much more scope for such integrated research objectives to be answered via the use of multiple otolith‐based techniques in a single study. Mapping otolith analytical techniques across these two approaches revealed that otolith structural analysis was mainly used to investigate biological processes, while otolith chemical analyses were most often applied to spatial questions. Heavy skew in research effort was apparent across biomes, with most (62%) publications specific to marine species, despite comparable levels of species richness and the importance of freshwater taxa (just 15% of papers). Indeed, around 1% (380 species) of a possible 31400+ extant species were examined in our surveyed papers, with a strong emphasis on temperate marine species of commercial value. Potential model species for otolith‐based ELH ecology research are arising, with the eel genus Anguilla (24 studies) and the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolis (14 studies) attracting more research effort than most other taxa. While there is a preponderance of common techniques (e.g. daily otolith increment counts, increment widths), novel techniques such as transgenerational marking and computed X‐ray tomography, are increasingly being applied in published studies. The application of an integrative approach based on a combination of emerging techniques and traditional methods holds promise for major advances in our understanding of ELH fish ecology and to shine light into the ‘black box’ of fish ecology.  相似文献

Spatial variation in the chemistry (Mg, Mn, Sr and Ba) of recently deposited otolith material (last 20–30 days of life) was compared between two demersal fish species; snapper Pagrus auratus (Sparidae) and sand flathead Platycephalus bassensis (Platycephalidae), that were collected simultaneously at 12 sites across three bays in Victoria, south-eastern Australia. Otolith chemistry was also compared with ambient water chemistry and among three sampling positions adjacent to the proximal otolith margin. For both species, variation in otolith chemistry among bays was significant for Ba, Mn and Sr; however, differences among bays were only similar between species for Ba and Mn. Only Ba showed significant variation at the site level. Across the 12 sites, mean otolith Ba levels were significantly positively correlated between species. Further, although incorporation rates differed, mean ambient Ba levels for both species were positively correlated with ambient Ba levels. Spatial variation in multi-element otolith chemistry was also broadly similar between species and with multi-element water chemistry. Partition coefficients clearly indicated species-specific incorporation of elements into otoliths. Mg and Mn were consistently higher in snapper than sand flathead otoliths (mean ±s .d ., Mg snapper 22·1 ± 3·8 and sand flathead 9·9 ± 1·5 μg g−1, Mn snapper 4·4 ± 2·6 and sand flathead 0·5 ± 0·3 μg g−1), Sr was generally higher in sand flathead otoliths (sand flathead 1570 ± 235 and snapper 1346 ± 104 μg g−1) and Ba was generally higher in snapper otoliths (snapper 12·1 ± 12·8 and sand flathead 1·8 ± 1·4 μg g−1). For both species, Mg and Mn were higher in the faster accreting regions of the otolith margin, Sr was lower in the slower accreting region and Ba showed negligible variation among the three sampling regions. This pattern was consistent with the higher Mg and Mn, and generally lower Sr observed in the faster accreting snapper otoliths. It is hypothesized that the differences between species in the incorporation of these elements may be at least partly related to differences in metabolic and otolith accretion rate. Although rates of elemental incorporation into otoliths appear species specific, for elements such as Ba where incorporation appears consistently related to ambient concentrations, spatial variation in otolith chemistry should show similarity among co-occurring species.  相似文献

As pressure on coastal marine resources is increasing globally, the need to quantitatively assess vulnerable fish stocks is crucial in order to avoid the ecological consequences of stock depletions. Species of Sciaenidae (croakers, drums) are important components of tropical and temperate fisheries and are especially vulnerable to exploitation. The black‐spotted croaker, Protonibea diacanthus, is the only large sciaenid in coastal waters of northern Australia where it is targeted by commercial, recreational and indigenous fishers due to its food value and predictable aggregating behaviour. Localized declines in the abundance of this species have been observed, highlighting the urgent requirement by managers for information on fine‐ and broad‐scale population connectivity. This study examined the population structure of P. diacanthus across north‐western Australia using three complementary methods: genetic variation in microsatellite markers, otolith elemental composition and parasite assemblage composition. The genetic analyses demonstrated that there were at least five genetically distinct populations across the study region, with gene flow most likely restricted by inshore biogeographic barriers such as the Dampier Peninsula. The otolith chemistry and parasite analyses also revealed strong spatial variation among locations within broad‐scale regions, suggesting fine‐scale location fidelity within the lifetimes of individual fish. The complementarity of the three techniques elucidated patterns of connectivity over a range of spatial and temporal scales. We conclude that fisheries stock assessments and management are required at fine scales (100 s of km) to account for the restricted exchange among populations (stocks) and to prevent localized extirpations of this species. Realistic management arrangements may involve the successive closure and opening of fishing areas to reduce fishing pressure.  相似文献

用茜素络合物(ALC)对唐鱼(Tanichthys albonubes)进行荧光标记,通过测定唐鱼耳石的标记率、死亡率、SGR和DWG等指标,讨论不同浓度ALC对唐鱼耳石标记效果和对其生长和存活的影响,探讨应用该标记技术追踪唐鱼野外种群迁移行为的可行性。结果表明:在温度28~30℃,浓度50 mg·L-1、80 mg·L-1茜素络合物溶液中浸泡24 h,唐鱼仔鱼、稚鱼死亡率为0,其中80 mg·L-1浓度处理组耳石荧光标记环检出率为100%,而在100mg·L-1浓度下,仔、稚鱼死亡率均达到80%;幼鱼在浓度为80、100 mg·L-1条件下无死亡,其中100 mg·L-1浓度处理组耳石标记环检出率为100%,而150 mg·L-1浓度下幼鱼死亡率为44%;成鱼在100、150 mg·L-1浓度下无死亡,且耳石标记率均为100%,而在200mg·L-1浓度下成鱼死亡率达到100%;此外,稚鱼在80 mg·L-1最适浓度下浸泡24 h后继续饲养90 d,标记组和对照组死亡率均为0,两组体质量、SGR和DWG差异不显著;唐鱼仔稚鱼、幼鱼和成鱼耳石标记的最适茜素络合物浓度分别为80、100和150 mg·L-1。  相似文献

Otolith chemical analyses (proton-induced X-ray emission and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) were used to examine patterns of diadromy in Australian grayling Prototroctes maraena collected from three rivers in south-eastern Australia. Concentrations of Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca were measured in the sagittal otoliths of 25 fish and in water samples collected on two occasions from multiple sites within freshwater, estuarine and marine reaches of the rivers. The results provide evidence of marine residency during the juvenile phase, with high Sr:Ca and low Ba:Ca in the inner region of the otoliths that were consistent across all three rivers. This general pattern was apparent for all individuals examined, suggesting that diadromous migration may be an obligate aspect of the life history. The chemical signatures of the outer regions of the otoliths were distinct between the three rivers, whilst there was no difference in the inner regions of the otoliths. This suggests that juveniles from different rivers may reside in a relatively homogenous chemical environment, such as the sea, and populations in coastal Victorian rivers may share a common marine recruitment source.  相似文献

This study quantified the per cent contribution of water chemistry to otolith chemistry using enriched stable isotopes of strontium (86Sr) and barium (137Ba). Euryhaline barramundi Lates calcarifer, were reared in marine (salinity 40), estuarine (salinity 20) and freshwater (salinity 0) under different temperature treatments. To calculate the contribution of water to Sr and Ba in otoliths, enriched isotopes in the tank water and otoliths were quantified and fitted to isotope mixing models. Fulton's K and RNA:DNA were also measured to explore the influence of fish condition on sources of element uptake. Water was the predominant source of otolith Sr (between 65 and 99%) and Ba (between 64 and 89%) in all treatments, but contributions varied with temperature (for Ba), or interactively with temperature and salinity (for Sr). Fish condition indices were affected independently by the experimental rearing conditions, as RNA:DNA differed significantly among salinity treatments and Fulton's K was significantly different between temperature treatments. Regression analyses did not detect relations between fish condition and per cent contribution values. General linear models indicated that contributions from water chemistry to otolith chemistry were primarily influenced by temperature and secondly by fish condition, with a relatively minor influence of salinity. These results further the understanding of factors that affect otolith element uptake, highlighting the necessity to consider the influence of environment and fish condition when interpreting otolith element data to reconstruct the environmental histories of fish.  相似文献
