A biocompatible magnetic film: synthesis and characterization

BACKGROUND: Biotechnology applications of magnetic gels include biosensors, targeted drug delivery, artificial muscles and magnetic buckles. These gels are produced by incorporating magnetic materials in the polymer composites. METHODS: A biocompatible magnetic gel film has been synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol. The magnetic gel was dried to generate a biocompatible magnetic film. Nanosized iron oxide particles (gamma-Fe2O3, ~7 nm) have been used to produce the magnetic gel. RESULTS: The surface morphology and magnetic properties of the gel films were studied. The iron oxide particles are superparamagnetic and the gel film also showed superparamagnetic behavior. CONCLUSION: Magnetic gel made out of crosslinked magnetic nanoparticles in the polymer network was found to be stable and possess the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles.     

Effect of a bacteriocin-activated polythene film on Listeria monocytogenes as evaluated by viable staining and epifluorescence microscopy

AIMS: To evaluate the effect of a bacteriocin-activated polythene film on resting and growing populations of Listeria monocytogenes. METHODS AND RESULTS: The active polythene films were industrially obtained by coating a solution of bacteriocin 32Y from Lactobacillus curvatus upon the surface of the film to be in contact with the packaged material. The behaviour of live Listeria populations was examined in liquid suspensions directly in contact with the bacteriocin-activated film, packed in antimicrobial film, and in a challenge test of storage of frankfurters superficially contaminated by L. monocytogenes and packed in antimicrobial film. In all the experiments, live and dead cells of L. monocytogenes were counted in epifluorescence microscopy after viable staining, which proved to be a suitable method to evaluate the action of bacteriocins on populations of L. monocytogenes. The results showed that the direct contact between active film surface and L. monocytogenes cells is effective for a fast and irreversible inactivation of the population by determining a direct cell disruption. This was confirmed by the results of the challenge test indicating that the antimicrobial package was effective in inhibiting the growth and survival of the pathogen on the surface of frankfurters during storage. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the antimicrobial film is encouraged especially for solid food products where the superficial contaminants come immediately in contact with the antimicrobial film. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: A fast inactivation of the bacterial population, coupled with appropriate conditions of storage, can improve the quality and safety and prolong the shelf-life of the food products packed in antimicrobial films.     

表面压与紫膜含量对紫膜LB膜质量的影响

本文报导了用表面轮廓测量仪测量了不同表面压和不同紫膜含量下制备的紫膜LB膜中紫膜碎片的厚度。实验结果表明:单个紫膜碎片在紫脂LB膜中的厚度为50左右,相当数量的紫膜碎片之间有重叠。当表面压为30mN/m或紫膜碎片与大豆磷脂之重量比为20:1时,紫膜碎片容易进入到水相或碎片之间相互重叠变得更加严重。     

多层螺旋CT检查与腹部X线平片对急性肠梗阻的诊断价值比较研究

目的:研究比较多层螺旋CT(MSCT)检查与腹部X线平片对急性肠梗阻(AIO)的诊断价值。方法:选择2016年1月到2018年4月间在蚌埠医学院附属阜阳医院接受手术治疗的200例AIO患者作为研究对象,对所有患者先常规予以腹部X线平片诊断,12h后再通过MSCT为患者实施诊断,对比两种方法的诊断结果、诊断体验效果以及漏诊率和误诊率。结果:MSCT的肠梗阻检出率为94.50%,明显较腹部X线平片的69.00%更高(P0.05)。MSCT所诊断的肠梗阻中,梗阻类型为绞窄型及梗阻病因为肠肿瘤者均占100.00%,较腹部X线平片的36.21%和54.26%明显更高(P0.05)。MSCT的诊断舒适度评分、图像清晰度评分较腹部X线平片明显更高,而操作复杂度评分较腹部X线平片明显更低(P0.05)。MSCT的漏诊率、误诊率分别为4.00%、1.50%,较腹部X线平片的22.00%、9.00%明显降低(P0.05)。结论:对于AIO患者,MSCT较腹部X线平片具有更高的诊断价值,诊断体验效果更好,漏诊率和误诊率偏低。

Isolation of Sporogen-AO1, a Sporogenic Substance,from Aspergillus oryzae

Sericin is a highly hydrophilic protein family acting as the glue in Bombyx mori silk. In order to apply sericin as a wound dressing, a novel sericin film named gel film was prepared by a simple process without using any chemical modifications: sericin solution was gelled with ethanol into a sheet shape and then dried. Infrared analysis revealed that the sericin gel film contained water-stable β-sheet networks formed in the gelation step. This structural feature rendered the gel film morphologically stable against swelling and gave it good handling properties in the wet state. The sericin gel film rapidly absorbed water, equilibrating at a water content of about 80%, and exhibited elastic deformation up to a strain of about 25% in the wet state. A culture of mouse fibroblasts on the gel film indicated that it had low cell adhesion properties and no cytotoxicity. These characteristics of sericin gel film suggest its potential as a wound dressing.     

A collagen film microassay for tissue collagenase.

A quantitative microassay for the detection of bacterial and tissue collagenase is presented. Collagen in acetic acid solution forms a thin, tenacious film upon contact with a dried agar surface. The digestion of the film by collagenase is detected by subsequent staining with Coomassie blue. Undigested film is stained dark blue while areas of collagenase digestion remain clear. The technique can be employed in two ways: with collagen-coated glass coverslips as a rapid screening method or with collagen-lined capillary tubes for precise quantitation. The assay has a sensitivity comparable to those assays using radioactively labeled collagen substrates and requires only 5 to 60 min of incubation.
