Seasonal changes in the nocturnal peracarid zooplankton froma nearshore area of the Gulf of Maine were studied from January1978 through December 1980 as a requirement of an ecologicalmonitoring program for the Public Service Company of New Hampshire'sSeabrook Generating Stanon. Numerically dominant species includedthe mysids Michteimysis mixta and Neomysis americana. the amphipodsPontogeneia inermis, Themisto gaudichaudi and Monoculodes edwardsi.and the cumaceans Diastylis polita and Lamprops quadriplicata.A general seasonal cycle was documented with a more abundantand speciose assemblage during fall and winter than summer.Peak abundance occurred during spring months prior to emigrationof juvenile M.mixta from the study area. Abiotic and bioticfactors which may affect the structure and composition of thisassemblage are discussed.  相似文献

Four species of sticklebacks were collected during May, June, August, and September 2011–2013 in a survey of fishes of Cobscook Bay, a macrotidal bay in eastern Maine, U.S.A. Threespine (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and ninespine (Pungitius pungitius) sticklebacks have circumpolar distributions; blackspotted (Gasterosteus wheatlandi) and fourspine (Apeltes quadracus) sticklebacks are limited to northeastern North America. Sticklebacks were collected in the intertidal zone with beach seines and in the pelagic zone with trawls. Up to 30 individuals of each species from each sample were measured and weighed. Individuals were identified as gravid or not in 2012 and 2013. Catch-per-unit-efforts of the most abundant threespine (18,878 individuals) and second most abundant blackspotted sticklebacks (2433) were greatest in the innermost part of the bay, on mudflats, in 2012, and in August. Fewer than 100 fourspine and fewer than 50 ninespine sticklebacks were caught over the three years, mostly in the inner bay. Length-frequency distributions suggested age classes of 0+, 1+, 2+ and a few 3+ for threespine sticklebacks and 0+ and 1+ for blackspotted sticklebacks. Most gravid individuals of those two species were present in May and June. Spawning occurred earlier in 2012, an unusually warm year, than in 2013. Changes in presence, timing, and abundance of other species in the fish survey corroborated the influence of the record warm conditions in 2012 in the Gulf of Maine on the fish community of Cobscook Bay. Blackspotted and ninespine sticklebacks are vulnerable to population decline from warming in the Gulf of Maine because they are near the southern limits of distribution.  相似文献

Ichthyoplankton in 20 taxa (17 identified to species, threeto genus) representing 14 families were collected in 10 surveysof the Miramichi estuary between May and September 1992. Thetaxonomic composition was typical of other estuaries in theGulf of St Lawrence and Gulf of Maine. Larvae of three anadromousspecies [rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus)and blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis)] were several ordersof magnitude more abundant than any other taxon. The upper estuary(Miramichi River and its tributaries) probably serves as a nurseryground for larvae of these species and others such as Atlantictomcod (Microgadus tomcod). The species composition of the lowerestuary (Miramichi Bay) was dominated by typically marine formsand probably serves as a nursery ground for winter flounder(Pleuronectes americanus), smooth flounder (Pleuronectes putnami).sculpin (Myoxocephalus sp ) and sand lance (Ammodytes sp) Ofthe environmental factors investigated, salinity was the mostuseful predictor of larval distribution in the estuary.  相似文献

根据2002年4~5月东海122°~123°30′E、29°~32°N水域海洋综合调查资料,对东海赤潮高发区浮游动物的数量分布、群落特征、种类组成及优势种等进行了分析.结果表明,在调查区共鉴定出饵料浮游动物128种[不含16种浮游幼虫(体)和仔鱼],分5门12大类,以桡足类占优势(40种,31.25%).浮游动物群落以广温广盐生态类群为主.中华哲水蚤(Calanus sinicus)为最主要优势种(142.10ind·m-3,68.09%).总生物量均值为243.80mg-m3(55.53~773.92mg·m-3),最高密集区(>500mg·m-3)位于长江口30°45′~31°15′N、122°45′~123°15′E水域.饵料生物量均值为195.96mg·m13(55.53~496.09mg·m。),呈长江口(30°30′N以北)水域高于舟山岛东南水域、长江口外海(122°45′E以东)高于近海水域的分布趋势.多样性指数(H′)均值为2.12(1.09~3.73).长江口水域多样度、均匀度和丰富度低,优势度大,反映出浮游动物群落结构不够稳定.采用逐步回归分析得知,影响本区春季浮游动物生态特征值分布的主要因子是水温、硅藻和甲藻.  相似文献

This study addresses the regional variation of zooplankton inthe Great South Channel area in the southern Gulf of Maine betweenCape Cod, Massachusetts and Georges Bank. This is a region ofparticular interest because of the intense concentrations ofthe copepod Calanus finmarchicus in the spring, along with theco-occurrence of right whales that feed upon these copepod aggregations.Zooplankton in the Great South Channel were sampled with theMOCNESS plankton sampler during spring 1988 and 1989 as partof the SCOPEX (South Channel Ocean Productivity Experiment)project. Zooplankton variation was addressed through comparisonsof taxonomic composition and water column abundances among towswithin and between years, and between locations with and withoutright whales. Results showed that zooplankton community compositionwas highly similar between tows within each year average percentsimilarity index (PSI) for pairwise comparisons of tows = 82.2and 88.8% in 1988 and 1989, respectively] as well as betweenyears (mean PSI = 84.4). The copepods C.finmarchicus and Pseudocalanusspp. dominated the zooplankton in terms of total water columnabundance (>94% of all zooplankton), with C.finmarchicuscomprising an average of 84% of the copepods. Highest abundancesof these copepods (particularly the younger life stages) coincidedwith a region of low-salinity transport from the north. In addition,these copepods had higher abundances in 1989, which may be relatedto the fact that low-salinity transport was approximately twiceas large in 1989 as in 1988. Given the physical dynamics ofthe region, it is possible that developing copepod populationswere adverted into the Great South Channel from the northwesternGulf of Maine via the low-salinity plume. Each year, whaleswere located in areas of both high and low copepod abundance,and tended to concentrate near the leading edge of the low-salinityplume. In 1988, there were no significant differences in zooplanktonabundance between right whale areas and non-whale areas forany taxon. In 1989, whale areas had a greater proportion ofC.finmarchicus relative to other zooplankton in 1989, whichsuggests that whales preferred regions enriched in C.finmarchicus.  相似文献

The zooplankton community structure of 22 lakes with varyingacidity and fish biomass, located southwest of the mining andsmelting region of Rouyn/Noranda, Quebec, was examined in July1987. Lakes with dominant piscivorous fish communities couldbe discriminated from non-piscivorous communities using solelypH and Chaoborus abundance, demonstrating that modificationsin the zooplankton community occurred concurrently with changesin the fUh communities. Strong discontinuities in zooplanktonspecies distributions were discerned in lakes with pH values<5.3; abundance ranges for several species could be semi-quantitativelyrelated to lake morpho-metry or chemistry. Small shallow kettlelakes with elevated heat budgets had high biomasses of smallherbivorous organisms. The presence of >5 mg m–3 ofadvanced Chaoborus instars (III and IV) was associated withreduced microcrustacean biomass in many lakes, particularlythose with low fish biomass. There was little evidence for size-selectivepredation by fish in these oligotrophic lakes. Fish biomass/effortcould be semi-quantitatively related to the biomass of Leptodorakindtii and the ratio of adult Diaptomus nunutus to copepoditestage IV.  相似文献

Larval fishes and zooplankton in a cyclonic eddy in Hawaiian waters   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A cold-core eddy occurred off the Kona coast of the island ofHawaii in July 1982. It remained in that area for {small tilde}70days, sufficient time for many reef fish species to completetheir planktonic larval phase. The deployment of eight currentdrogues in the eddy showed how entrainment of plankton fromthe reef and adjacent offshore waters can occur and that passivedrift can return drifters from the deep sea to shore. Larvalfishes may be swept past the island every 7–8 days ina weak eddy and 3.5–5 days in a strong eddy. Planktoncollections were made at night near the surface and at the samedepth as the current drogues. Zooplankton were most concentratedat the eddy center. Taxonomic analysis of the plankton showedthat the dominant animals were calanoid copepods, malacostracans,hyperud amphipods, gastropod and bivalve larvae and chaetognaths.The densities of zooplankton and larval fishes in the eddy werehigher than in the same area before the arrival of an eddy.Larval fishes were most abundant in the periphery and amongthese, midwater fish larvae (gonostomatids and myctophids) werethe most numerous. Other numerous fish larvae in the eddy includedscombrids, particularly Thunnus albacares. carangids and thereef fish, Abudefduf abdominalis is (Pomacentridae).  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of gymnosome gastropods in theArgentine Sea and Brazil—Malvinas Confluence during 1978–1979and 1988 were studied. The collections analyzed included 768quantitative samples obtained between 48°W and the coast,and from 35°S to 55°S. Two species were found. Spongiobranchaeaaustralis was the most frequent and abundant (up to 730 per1000 m3); its presence in the area was associated with the coreof the Malvinas Current. Clione antarctica was less abundant(maximum abundance: 230 per 1000 m3) and was also associatedwith the Malvinas Current. The geographic ranges of both speciesin the area are wider than previously described. Since the rangeof S. australis in the area extends far from the range of itsprey Clio, it is not clear whether S. australis can feed onthe thecosomatous pteropod Limacina (and not only on Clio, asdescribed in the bibliography) or it starves in that area. Duringthe 1978–1979 annual cycle, the abundance of both speciesfollowed neither the abundance patterns of their prey nor ofthe total zooplankton, and differed from each other. The residencetime of swarms of both gymnosomes were shorter than one month.As a general pattern, the aggregates are rapidly transportednorthward by the Malvinas Current and also penetrate the outershelf water, but they remain there only during a short periodand cannot preclude the final expatriation. Zooplankton and ichthyoplankton assemblages were studied fromJanuary 2003 to June 2004 in a temperate shallow estuary (Mondegoestuary, Portugal). Monthly sampling was performed at five stationsat high and low tides, with subsurface tows with 335 and 500µm mesh Bongo nets. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showeda significant effect (P < 0.05) of the mesh size of the neton the abundance of main zooplankton groups. On average, theabundance of the 500 µm taxocenosis was 67 and 102 timeslower than the 335 µm taxocenosis at high and low tidesrespectively, especially in the south arm. More than 80 specieswere identified in the zooplankton samples. The upper reachesof northern arm are dominated by freshwater crustacean mesozooplanktonlike Acanthocyclops robustus and Diaptomus spp. and the cladoceransDaphnia, Ceriodaphnia and Bosmina, often being codominant. Inthe southern arm, the resident estuarine copepod Acartia tonsawas dominant, eventually being the most abundant taxon. Marinereaches of estuary are usually dominated by the marine calanoidcopepods Acartia clausi and Temora longicornis and the siphonophoresMuggiaea atlantica. Concerning the ichthyoplankton, this wasdominated by the larvae of estuarine resident species, mainlyPomatoschistus sp., and eggs of Engraulis encrasicolus. Theabundance of Pomatoschistus sp. larvae was positively correlatedwith water temperature. Statistical analysis (canonical correspondenceanalysis) used to determine the spatiotemporal structure ofthe zooplankton assemblages and its correlation with environmentalvariables showed that salinity and temperature were the mainfactors influencing the distribution of zooplankton. The resultsobtained also showed that abundance was strongly influencedby the hydrological circulation pattern and direct or indirecthuman impacts that occur in each arm of the estuary. Species composition and body-size distribution were studiedin the crustacean zooplankton communities of two limnologicallysimilar lake localities situated 50 km apart in the Pasvik RiverSystem, northern Norway. A recent invasion and successive downstreamexpansion of vendace (Coregonus albula), a specialized zooplanktivorousfish, allowed comparisons between sites with different predationpressures. Vendace had established a high population densityand was the dominant fish species in the pelagic of the upperlocality, but had just invaded the lower locality with a smallnumber of individuals. Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), a closelyrelated but less specialized zooplanktivore species, dominatedthe native fish community of both lakes. The zooplankton communityof the upper locality was dominated in June and August by Bosminalongirostris, the smallest zooplankton species represented inthe water course, and in September by Daphnia cristata. Thelower locality was dominated by the larger Holopedium gibberumand Eudiaptomus graciloides in June, by D.cristata in August,and by D.cristata and B.longirostris in September. The meanbody size of the three most abundant cladoceran species wassignificantly smaller in the upper locality, compared to thelower locality. It was concluded that the invasion and establishmentof a dense vendace population in the upper locality had increasedthe predation pressure in the pelagic, resulting in a reductionof body size and a shift towards smaller species in the zooplanktoncommunity.  相似文献

The effects of severe thermal stress imposed by the intermittentoperation of a nuclear reactor on plankton abundance and dynamicswere investigated in Pond C, a cooling reservoir on the SavannahRiver Site in South Carolina, USA. Temperatures in Pond C rangedup to 58°C during reactor operation. The thermal effluenteliminated zooplankton from regions where the temperature exceeded45°C, reduced zooplankton abundance by 1–3 ordersof magnitude and typically halved the number of taxa. Reactoroperation also reduced phytoplankton biovolume, often by >70%.During intermittent reactor operation, the rotifer Filinia longisetadominated the zooplankton and two cladocerans of the genus Moinawere abundant. These species were not abundant during extendedreactor shutdowns. The success of Filinia and Moina was dueprimarily to their tolerance of high temperatures. Sparse phytoplanktonprobably limited some zooplankton taxa, although other taxa,such as Filinia may have utilized bacterial resources. Reactoroperation may have intensified predation on crustacean zooplanktonwhen fish were concentrated in refuge areas with zooplankton.Processes by which zooplankton repopulated the reservoir afterreactor shutdown were inferred from zooplankton distributionpatterns, and population growth and birth rates. Repopulationtypically occurred within a few days due to rapid growth ofpopulations from refuge areas within the reservoir and colonistsbrought in through a tributary canal. Mechanisms of zooplanktonrepopulation in Pond C suggest that refuges or colonizationcorridors should be maintained when the re-establishment ofcommunities following cessation of stresses is desired.  相似文献

We studied the vagile epibenthic and nektonic macrofauna and hydrographic environments of the Saco River estuary and adjacent waters, including Biddeford Pool lagoon and Saco Bay (Gulf of Maine), over a 3-year period (1979–82). Twice as many species of vagile macrofauna were found in Saco Bay as in the estuarine environments, and none were found at the head of the estuary below the dam. Field distributions of various species and life stages agreed with their locomotor responses in the laboratory to physicochemical gradients, supporting the view that habitat correlations are at least in part determined by active habitat preference and/oor avoidance behavior of vagile species. We also examined the stomach contents of specimens of two common fish species to determine their local feeding habits. Yearling Pollachius virens fed primarily on Ammodytes americanus, while yearling Pseudopleuronectes americanus stomachs contained primarily small, whole Echinarachnius parma.  相似文献

In lakes, fish and invertebrate predation are recognized asstrong structuring forces on zooplankton communities. The objectof this investigation was to study whether predation has a similarpotential in a coastal area of the brackish Baltic Sea and ifit could explain observed differences in zooplankton communitystructure between a reference area and an eutrophied area. Speciescomposition and daily vertical migration of zooplankton andzooplanktivores, and the diets of the latter, were studied inJuly and August at two 30 m deep stations differing in primaryproductivity. The biomass of zooplankton >35 µm wasdominated by copepods, but cladocerans and rotifers also occurredin significant numbers. The dominating zooplanktivores wereherring (Clupea harengus) and the mysid shrimp Mysis mixta.They fed almost exclusively on zooplankton, mainly copepods,and their estimated food consumption equalled or exceeded thesummer copepodite production. The structure of the zooplanktoncommunity cannot be explained by effects of predation or byfeeding conditions alone. Increases in rotifer and cladoceranabundances with increased primary production suggests effectsof food supply. However, a generally rapid decline in the annualsummer peak of cladocerans may be caused by predation. The totalabundance of copepods did not increase with improved feedingconditions, but there was a shift in species dominance. Thecopepod Ewytemora affinis hirundoides, which was intensivelypreyed upon, increased with increased phytoplankton production,while Acartia bifilosa and/or A.longiremis, which was less eaten,decreased. Predation may explain a pronounced daily verticalmigration of the most predated copepods. They occurred in deeperwater during the day, when the visually feeding herring wereactive, and moved closer to the surface at night when M.mixtaleft the bottom, to forage in the water column.  相似文献

Whereas many studies have addressed the mechanisms driving partial migration, few have focused on the consequences of partial migration on trophic dynamics, and integrated studies combining the two approaches are virtually nonexistent. Here we show that temperature affects seasonal partial migration of cyprinid fish from lakes to predation refuges in streams during winter and that this migration in combination with temperature affects the characteristics and phenology of lower trophic levels in the lake ecosystem. Specifically, our six‐year study showed that the proportion of fish migrating was positively related to lake temperature during the pre‐migration growth period, i.e. during summer. Migration from the lake occurred later when autumn water temperatures were high, and timing of return migration to the lake occurred earlier at higher spring water temperatures. Moreover, the winter mean size of zooplankton in the lake increased with the proportion of fish being away from the lake, likely as a consequence of decreased predation pressure. Peak biomass of phytoplankton in spring occurred earlier at higher spring water temperatures and with less fish being away from the lake. Accordingly, peak zooplankton biomass occurred earlier at higher spring water temperature, but relatively later if less fish were away from the lake. Hence, the time between phyto‐ and zooplankton peaks depended only on the amount of fish being away from the lake, and not on temperature. The intensity of fish migration thereby had a major effect on plankton spring dynamics. These results significantly contribute to our understanding of the interplay between partial migration and trophic dynamics, and suggest that ongoing climate change may significantly affect such dynamics.  相似文献

The possible links between river flow, zooplankton abundance and the responses of zooplanktivorous fishes to physico‐chemical and food resource changes are assessed. To this end, the seasonal abundance, distribution and diet of the estuarine round‐herring Gilchristella aestuaria and Cape silverside Atherina breviceps were studied in the Kariega Estuary. Spatio‐temporal differences were determined for selected physico‐chemical variables, zooplankton abundance and zooplanktivorous fish abundance and distribution. Results indicated that, following a river flood event in winter (>30 m3 s?1), altered physico‐chemical conditions occurred throughout the estuary and depressed zooplankton stocks. Abundance of G. aestuaria was highest in spring, with this species dominant in the upper and middle zones of the estuary, while A. breviceps was dominant in summer and preferred the middle and lower zones. The catch per unit of effort of both zooplanktivores also declined significantly following the flooding, thus suggesting that these fishes are reliant on zooplankton as a primary food source for healthy populations. Copepods dominated the stomach contents of both fish species, indicating a potential for strong interspecific competition for food, particularly in the middle reaches. Temporal differences were evident in dietary overlap between the two zooplanktivorous fish species and were correlated with river flow, zooplankton availability and fish distribution. The findings of this study emphasize the close trophic linkages between zooplankton and zooplanktivorous fishes under changing estuarine environmental conditions, particularly river flow and provide important baseline information for similar studies elsewhere in South Africa and the rest of the world.  相似文献

The diel migration patterns of Mesocyclops edax and its preyin a small lake were followed in two studies separated by approximatelyone year. Gut contents of the predators were examined and selectivityindices calculated at each depth at 0100 h during 1980. Thethree principal zooplankton prey found in the guts of M. edaxwere Keratella, Kellicottia, and Bosmina. The predator and allthree major prey species exhibited unique and different dielvertical distribution and migration patterns. The complex natureof the spatio-temporal variation in prey density to which M.edax is exposed, demonstrates the dangers of using selectivityindices without knowledge of the distribution patterns of bothpredator and prey. In this study two questions concerning the structure and organisation of shallow brackish and estuarine fish assemblages are: (1) Does the species number decline with lower salinity as found for the macrofauna invertebrates? (2) Does the water temperature during the year influence the abundance of fishes along the Swedish coast? In a west coast estuary salinities were higher but fluctuated more than in the Bothnian Sea. Days with temperatures exceeding 15°C were up to twice as many in the west coast estuary as in the Bothnian Sea. In spring the species number increased, but later on in summer it declined to increase again in autumn, but declined once again as winter approached. Fish density in the west coast estuary increased gradually to a maximum in late summer and then declined, while in the Bothnian Sea there was often a decline during summer. Positive correlations were found between observed minimum salinities and average species number, and between number of days with temperatures exceeding +15°C and both yearly average and maximum fish densities. Juveniles (0+) were present for longer periods in the west coast estuary than in the Bothnian Sea and reproduction of the common species started earlier in the former area. In winter the shallow areas are devoid of fish because of ice and so are re-colonised each spring. The study demonstrates that water salinity limited the species number, and water temperature the abundance of fish.  相似文献

A film-based holography system was used in conjunction withinstrumentation that detected bioluminescent thin layers torecord the spatial distribution of zooplankton and their preyin the Gulf of Maine, USA. The holocamera and instruments weremounted on the Johnson Sea Link (JSL) in a setup that minimizedthe disturbance to the sample volume. More than 143 hologramswere automatically scanned to provide focused images of 5000–10000 particles and their three-dimensional coordinates in each894 cm3 sample. The reconstructed volumes provided clear imagesof intermingling copepods species, nauplii, Pseudonitzschiadiatoms and particles in the 10 µm–5 mm size range.Spatial analysis of the nearest neighbor distance (NND) of thesmallest particles showed a random distribution, but detritusparticles showed small-scale clustering in regions below thepycnocline. A detritus maximum, found several meters below thepycnocline, at 20–30 m, was determined to be caused byfecal pellets in various stages of degradation. This regionalso contained elevated concentrations of calanoids, cyclopoidsand harpacticoids. In one third of the cases, the harpacticoids,Aegisthus sp, were attached to detritus.  相似文献

Tidepool fishes of a rocky, boreal community in Maine (USA) were sampled periodically from September 1979 to September 1988. Unlike tidepool fish communities in many other areas of the world, those in Maine included no year-round residents. Several of the 22 species among the 1,135 fishes collected occupied tidepools seasonally as nursery areas. In particular, juvenile lumpfish,Cyclopterus lumpus, used tidepools from June to December during their first two years of life. Disappearance of these species from tidepools in winter appeared to be primarily a result of low water temperatures and reduced algal cover in pools.Cooperators are the University of Maine, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Wildlife Management Institute.  相似文献

Synopsis Some 190 South African estuaries, covering all biogeographic provinces within the region, were classified into three types based on a combination of mouth condition and estuary size (surface area). The fish communities of the estuary types within each zoogeographic region were described and compared. Multivariate analyses revealed that each estuary type contained somewhat distinct fish communities. In addition, the study identified common patterns in species richness and ichthyofaunal composition. Open estuaries have relatively high species richness; this is a reflection of a permanent or near-permanent connection with the sea which allows access into these estuaries by all marine migrant species within the region. Intermittent connection with the sea limits the recruitment and utilisation of closed estuaries by marine migrant species; this results in reduced species richness in moderate to large closed estuaries. Small closed estuaries exhibit the lowest species richness and this is probably a result of their limited habitat and increased isolation from the sea. The key fishes that utilise estuaries could also be categorised into a number of groups based on their relative importance within each estuary type. Some species are largely restricted to predominantly open systems. Other taxa, while important in predominantly open estuaries, also occur in moderate to large closed systems. Some estuarine-associated species are well represented in all estuary types but exhibit a greater importance in closed estuaries. This study has shown that South African fish communities not only reflect estuarine typology but also respond to these differences in a consistent manner that spans all zoogeographic regions. The prevalence of similar patterns in other parts of the world suggests that estuarine typology is a major driver in the structuring of global estuarine fish communities.  相似文献
