Permineralized gigantopterid stems of Vasovinea tianii Li et Taylor gen. et sp. nov. were collected from the Upper Permian of Guizhou Province, China. They are slender and bear prickles, trichomes, and compound hooks. Internally, the stems have a sparganum cortex, eustele, and secondary xylem. The mesarch protoxylem tracheids have annular to helical thickenings, and metaxylem tracheary elements have scalariform and/or transversely elongated, bordered pits, while those of the secondary xylem have scalariform to circular bordered pits. Importantly, the inner part of the secondary xylem has large vessel elements with foraminate-like perforation plates. The hooks and other morphological and anatomical characteristics are similar to those found in gigantopterids, suggesting that Vasovinea is a member of the Gigantopteridales. The vegetative plant is reconstructed from permineralized stems and Gigantopteris-type leaves based on the anatomical similarities and intimate association. The eustele, secondary xylem, and other features support the placement of the order among the seed plants. Ecologically, Vasovinea is suggested to have been a vine or liana that used compound hooks to climb among the trees in a Permian tropical rain forest. The occurrence of vessels could have been an efficient adaptation to allow the slender stems to conduct sufficient water to the large Gigantopteris-type leaves.  相似文献

We present a male infant with preauricular skin tags and pits, downslanting palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, ectopic anus, hypospadias, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The clinical features in our patient show phenotypic overlap with the cat eye syndrome, as illustrated by the review of 105 reported cases. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a supernumerary marker chromosome, which was identified by microdissection and fluorescence in situ hybridization as an isodicentric chromosome 22(pter --> q11.2::q11.2 --> pter). It was proved with probes specific for the cat eye syndrome critical region that this region was present in quadruplicate in the propositus. We conclude that CES is characterized by large phenotypic variability, ranging from near normal to severe malformations, as reflected in the neurodevelopmental outcome. Preauricular skin tags and/or pits are the most consistent features, and suggest the presence of a supernumerary bisatellited marker chromosome 22 derived from duplication of the CES critical region.  相似文献

Intervessel pits act as safety valves that prevent the spread of xylem embolism. Pectin-calcium crosslinks within the pit membrane have been proposed to affect xylem vulnerability to cavitation. However, as the chemical composition of pit membranes is poorly understood, this hypothesis has not been verified. Using electron microscopy, immunolabeling, an antimonate precipitation technique, and ruthenium red staining, we studied the distribution of selected polysaccharides and calcium in the pit membranes of four angiosperm tree species. We tested whether shifts in xylem vulnerability resulting from perfusion of stems with a calcium chelating agent corresponded with the distribution of pectic homogalacturonans (HG) and/or calcium within interconduit pit membranes. No HG were detected in the main part of intervessel pit membranes, but were consistently found in the marginal membrane region known as the annulus. Calcium colocalized with HG in the annulus. In contrast to intervessel pits, the membrane of vessel-ray pits showed a high pectin content. The presence of two distinct chemical domains, the annulus and the actual pit membrane, can have substantial implications for pit membrane functioning. We propose that the annulus could affect the observed shift in xylem vulnerability after calcium removal by allowing increased pit membrane deflection.  相似文献

Molecular studies indicate that Penaeaceae, Oliniaceae, and the monospecific families Alzateaceae and Rhynchocalycaceae form a clade of Myrtales. Of these four families, Penaeaceae have tracheids with vestured pits, whereas the others have septate fibers lacking vestures; all have vestured pits in vessels. Tracheid presence in Penaeaceae may be related to the arid South African habitats of the family. Presence of vestures on tracheids in families with vestured vessel pits is one indication that imperforate elements are tracheids and are conductive cells, whereas fiber-tracheids and libriform fibers are non-conductive. Tracheids occur widely in angiosperms and may be plesiomorphies or apomorphies. Combretaceae, the first branch of the Myrtales clade, has a great diversity of vesture features in vessels compared to the Penaeaceae alliance families. Alzatea has vestures that spread over the inside of the vessels, whereas in most taxa of the alliance, vestures are confined to the pit cavities and pit apertures. Vestures in the alliance tend to be globular in shape, and are bridged together by strands of wall material. Lignotubers and roots in Penaeaceae have vestures much like those in stems. Only a few species and genera (notably Alzatea) of the alliance have vesture features the pattern of which correlates with the current taxonomic system. Vestured pits should be viewed from the inside surface of vessels as well as the outer surface, and although sectional views of vestured pits are infrequent, they are very informative. Studies that explore diversity from one order or family to another are needed and offer opportunities for understanding the evolutionary significance of this feature.  相似文献

The nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCC) is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, jaw cysts, pits of the palms and/or soles, ectopic calcification, and skeletal malformations. The NBCC gene has recently been mapped to chromosome 9q22.3-9q31. In order to further define the region containing the NBCC gene, we have analyzed 137 individuals from eight families for linkage, using 11 markers from the region. Eight markers showed statistically significant evidence for linkage to NBCC. Three markers (D9S180, ALDOB, and D9S173) showed no definite recombination with the disease locus. All families showed some evidence for linkage to markers in this region. On the basis of the inspection of individual recombinants and previously published information about map location, we suggest the following order for the markers: D9S119-D9S12-D9S197-D9S196-(NBCC,D9S180 -D9S173,ALDOB)-D9S109- D9S127-(D9S53,D9S29). We are currently developing YAC contigs for the most closely linked markers, to further refine the location of the NBCC gene.  相似文献

We investigated the hypothesis that water stress-induced xylem embolism is caused by air aspirated into functional vessels from neighboring embolized ones (e.g. embolized by physical damage) via pores in intervessel pit membranes. The following experiments with sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) support the hypothesis. (a) Most vessels in dehydrating stem segments embolized at xylem pressures < −3 megapascals; at this point the pressure difference across intervessel pits between air-filled vessels at the segment's ends and internal water-filled vessels was >3 megapascals. This same pressure difference was found to be sufficient to force air across intervessel pits from air injection experiments of hydrated stem segments. This suggests air entry at pits is causing embolism in dehydrating stems. (b) Treatments that increased the permeability of intervessel pits to air injection also caused xylem to embolize at less negative xylem pressures. Permeability was increased either by perfusing stems with solutions of surface tension below that of water or by perfusion with a solution of oxalic acid and calcium. The mechanism of oxalic-calcium action on permeability is unknown, but may relate to the ability of oxalate to chelate calcium from the pectate fraction of the pit membrane. (c) Diameter of pores in pit membranes measured with the scanning electron microscope were within the range predicted by hypothesis (≤0.4 micrometer).  相似文献

A scanning electron microscope equipped with a freezing stagewas used to examine the effects of slow freezing on pit aspirationand bubble formation in living tree stems. The size (approximately 2.0 µm diameter) and the sphericalor ellipsoidal shape of the bubbles found in the centre of frozenlumens indicated freezing rates greater than 25 µm s–1.Both unaspirated and aspirated bordered pits were found in thefrozen xylem. The technique used did not reveal enough pitsto determine whether unaspirated pits were more prevalent thanaspirated pits. Report of two cases with Van der Woude syndrome: a child and her mother: Congenital pits of the lower lip are rare malformations. They are closely associated with cleft lip (CL), cleft lip/palate (CL/CP) or isolated cleft palate (CP) and if so this condition is known as Van der Woude syndrome, which is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion with high penetrance. Two individuals, one with lower lip pits and cleft palate and the other with isolated lower lip pit from the same family are described. Autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance was observed in this family and treatment consisted of complete removal of sinus tracts in one patient. Pathological features of sinus tracts consisted of stratified nonkeratinized squamous epithelium and a lamina propria of dense connective tissue. Importance of genetic counseling is emphasized as at least half of gene carriers have some kind of clefting.  相似文献

Twenty collections representing one species each ofSymbolanthus andTachia, and 17 species ofMacrocarpaea were studied by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Wood details show that the three genera form a coherent group;Tachia differs from the others in only a few minor characters. Because the species studied form a natural group, wood variations within Helieae offer the basis for correlations and interpretations with respect to habit and ecology. Diameter of stems studied proves to be an important variable that must be taken into account. Correlations with stem diameter include wider vessels in outer wood of wider samples. This would correspond to deeper penetration of reliable water tables by roots of helioid trees or large shrubs. Ray height decreases with increase in stem diameter, an indication of paedomorphosis. Rays of all species are paedomorphic in histology by virtue of relative paucity or even absence of procumbent cells in multiseriate rays. Pseusoscalariform lateral wall pitting of vessels is also a feature characteristic of paedomorphosis. The assemblage of paedomorphic features correlates well with the conclusion, reached by authors who used cladistic methods, that Gentianaceae other than Gentianeae are derived from suffrutescent prennials. The Mesomorphy Ratio, which incorporates three vessel features, correlates with leaf length and with stem diameter. All Helieae are mesophytic, but to various degrees. Septate fiber-tracheids, where present, are typically near vessels and form a substitute for or an addendum to vasicentric axial parenchyma as a mechanism for photosynthate storage. Vestured pits occur on lateral wall pits of vessels of all Helieae, but not on the fibertracheids. Vestured pits show diversity withinMacrocarpaea, a feature of possible systematic significance.  相似文献

During the last decade, a new type of structure has been found at several archaeological sites in Denmark. These structures can be interpreted as having been used for retting the stems of textile plants such as Linum usitatissimum L. (flax), Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) and Urtica dioica L. (nettle). In order to obtain fine threads for textile production, these plants need to pass through several biological and technical processes. The first process is the retting of the plant stems to dissolve the pectin which fixes the fibres to the stalk. This can either be done by water retting, where the plant stems are soaked in lakes, rivers or waterlogged pits, or by field retting, where the stems are laid out in a field in order to absorb dew. The first method is shorter in time and the process is easier to control. In this article, details of archaeological structures are presented from eight sites in southern Scandinavia that can be interpreted as textile plant retting pits. The constructions of the pits are described, as well as the archaeological contexts and the relevant associated archaeobotanical records. Some of the presented sites, of which the oldest are dated to the late Bronze Age and early pre-Roman Iron Age (800–250 b.c.) and the youngest to the Viking Age (a.d. 750–1050), indicate a large-scale production of flax that had been underestimated up to now.  相似文献

Background

Congenital malformations of the seminal vesicle are uncommon, and most of them are cystic malformations. If an insult occurs between the 4th and the 13 h gestational week, the embryogenesis of the kidney, ureter, seminal vesicle, and vas deferens could be altered. Cysts of the seminal vesicle may appear with a mass effect, dysuria, epididymitis, or obstruction of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Approximately two thirds of them are associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis, because both the ureteral buds and seminal vesicles originate from the mesonephric (Wolffian) duct. They were first described by Zinner in 1914, and 200 cases of seminal vesicle cysts associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis have been reported in the literature. Most patients with this anomaly are asymptomatic until the third or fourth decade of life. Some cases have nonspecific symptoms such as prostatism, urinary urgency, dysuria, painful ejaculation, and perineal discomfort. Transrectal ultrasonography provides good visualization of the pelvic structures and allows guidance for aspiration of the cysts.

Case presentation

We present two cases of seminal vesicle cyst. The first patient had dysuria, increased frequency of urination, and haematuria. He was operated and benefited from a removal of the cyst with right ureterectomy and left ureteral reimplantation. The second patient had disorder of the digestive transit and he benefited from a laparoscopic removal of the cyst.

Conclusions

Seminal vesicle cysts combined with ipsilateral renal agenesis are rare urological anomalies. Usual symptoms that are caused by the seminal vesicle cysts are bladder irritation and obstruction as well as pain in the perineum and scrotum. Epididymitis is frequently found. Treatment consists to removing the seminal vesicle cyst.

Coated pits trap cell surface receptors and mediate their internalization. Once internalized, many receptors recycle back to the cell surface. When recycled receptors are inserted into the plasma membrane, they move until they are again trapped in coated pits. The mechanisms for moving receptors from their insertion sites to coated pits are unknown. Unaided diffusion as the transport mechanism is consistent with the observed kinetics of receptor recycling. Another candidate for the transport mechanism is convection. For receptors that recycle to random positions on the cell surface, or to restricted regions about coated pits, we assess the importance of convective flow in the transport of receptors to coated pits. First we consider local flows set up by the formation of coated pits and their transformation into coated vesicles. As coated pits form and round into coated vesicles, surrounding membrane is drawn inward, creating flows directed toward the coated pit centers. We show that unless the lifetime of a coated pit is very short, 10 s or less, such local flows have a negligible effect on the time it takes receptors to reach coated pits. We also show that they are unlikely to be the mechanism that keeps receptors that have reached coated pits trapped within coated pits until they are internalized. Finally we calculate the mean time tau for a diffusing receptor to reach a coated pit in the presence of membrane flow that is constant in magnitude and direction, as may occur on moving cells. We show that for typical membrane flow velocities, tau can be reduced significantly from its value in the absence of flow. For example, a velocity v = 2.8 micron/min cuts the mean transport time in half.  相似文献

Sarcandra is the only genus of Chloranthaceae hitherto thought to be vesselless. Study of liquid-preserved material of S. glabra revealed that in root secondary xylem some tracheary elements are wider in diameter and have markedly scalariform end walls combined with circular pits on lateral walls. Examination of these wider tracheary elements with scanning electron microscope (SEM) demonstrated various degrees of pit membrane absence in the end walls. Commonly a few threadlike fibrils traverse the pits (perforations); these as well as intact nature of pit membranes in pits at ends of some perforation plates are evidence that lack of pit membranes does not result from damage during processing. Some perforations lack any remnants of pit membranes. Although perforation plates and therefore vessels are present in Sarcandra roots, no perforations were observed in tracheary elements of stems or lignotubers. Further, stem tracheids do not have the prominently scalariform end walls that the vessel elements in roots do. Presence of vessels in Sarcandra removes at least one (probably several) hypothetical events of vessel origin that must be postulated to account for known patterns of vessel distribution in angiosperms, assuming that they are primitively vesselless. Seven (perhaps fewer) vessel origin events in angiosperms could account for these patterns; two of those events (Nelumbo and monocotyledons) are different from the others in nature. Widely accepted data on trends of vessel specialization in woody dicotyledons yield an unappreciated implication: vessel specialization has happened in a highly polyphyletic manner in dicotyledons, and therefore multiple vessel origins represent a logical extension backward in time. If a group of vesselless dictyoledons ancestral to other angiosperms existed, they can be hypothesized to have had a relatively homogeneous floral plan now that Sarcandra-like plants no longer need be imagined within that group. Sarcandra and other Chloranthaceae show that the borderline between vessel absence and presence is less sharp than generally appreciated.  相似文献

The white rot fungi Ceriporiopsis subvermispora FP-90031-sp and Cyathus stercoreus ATCC 36910 were evaluated for their ability to delignify Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) stems and improve biodegradability. Compositional and structural alterations in plant cell walls effected by the fungi were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chromatography of alkali-treated residues, microspectrophotometry, and electron microscopy. Contaminating bacteria and fungi, which grew from unsterilized Bermuda grass stems, did not alter the improvement in grass biodegradability by either of the fungi from that of gas-sterilized stems. The biodegradation of stems by ruminal microorganisms, after treatment for 6 weeks with C. subvermispora or C. stercoreus, was improved by 29 to 32% and by 63 to 77%, respectively; dry weight losses caused by pretreatment with the fungi were about 20% over that in untreated, control stems. Both fungi preferentially removed aromatics to carbohydrates, and C. subvermispora removed proportionately more guaiacyl units than did C. stercoreus. Substantial amounts of ester-linked p-coumaric and ferulic acids were removed by both fungi, and about 23 and 41% of total aromatics (determined after 4 M NaOH direct treatment) were removed from the plant biomass after incubation with C. subvermispora and C. stercoreus, respectively. UV absorption microspectrophotometry indicated that ester-linked phenolic acids were totally removed from the parenchyma cell walls, and these cells were readily and completely degraded by both fungi. However, aromatic constituents were only partially removed from the more recalcitrant sclerenchyma cell walls, resulting in variation in electron density and random digestion pits after incubation with fiber-degrading bacteria.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Summary Choroid plexus cysts were diagnosed in 25 out of 823 fetuses with prenatally diagnosed abnormalities (growth retardation/malformations). Among these, 5 revealed a chromosomal disorder (4 cases with trisomy 18 and one case with a translocation trisomy 21). Additional abnormalities, such as growth retardation, holoprosencephaly, hydrocephalus and club foot, were found in 6 out of the 20 fetuses with no chromosomal abnormality. All fetuses with a chromosomal disorder revealed further typical prenatally recognizable abnormalities. Our observation indicates that prenatally diagnosed choroid plexus cysts should be considered as an indication for prenatal chromosomal diagnosis, although the risk of there being an underlying chromosomal disorder is low in cases with no additional abnormalities.  相似文献

Giant congenital melanocytic nevi may be symptomatically isolated or syndromic. Associations with capillary malformations are exceptional, and development of epidermal cysts has not been described. A 71‐year‐old patient with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) of the lower back, buttocks, and thighs was asymptomatic except for unexpected hemorrhage during partial surgical excision years before. Blunt trauma at age 64 initiated recurrent, severe pain under the nevus; multiple large epidermal cysts then developed within it. Imaging and biopsy showed a large, non‐pulsatile venous malformation intermingled with the deep nevus. A low‐abundance, heterozygous BRAF c.1799T>A (p.V600E) mutation was present in both gluteal and occipital congenital nevi; additional mutations in NRAS, GNAQ, GNA11, HRAS, or PIK3CA were undetectable. This is the first demonstration of a recurrent BRAF mutation in multiple large congenital nevi from the same individual, confirming that this malformation can have multiple genetic origins. Early constitutive activation of BRAF can therefore cause unusual associations of giant nevi with vascular malformations, indicating that both pigment and endothelial cell physiology may be affected by mosaic RASopathies.  相似文献

One thousand reproductive organs from gilts were collected during the period March-August at a slaughterhouse in central Sweden. The organs were inspected in respect of congenital defects and certain reproductive physiological data. The results are recorded in Tables 1–6. Figs. 1–7 show some types of malformations. The total frequency of malformations was 22.1 %, of which 14 % cysts in mesosalpinx and 4.1 % partial duplication of the vagina. The remainder consisted of general developmental defects and of local defects in the tubular genital tract. Malformations with presumed effect on fertility were found in 4.5 % of all organs examined, of which 0.8 % presumably caused permanent sterility and 3.7 % lowered fertility (small litters). Hydrometra was found in 33 cases, 2 of which in sexually mature gilts. The left ovary contained more corpora lutea than the right, and the mean weight of the left ovary was greater than that of the right, both in sexually mature and prepuberal gilts. Of 202 sexually mature gilts examined 16.9 % had cystic corpora lutea in their ovaries as a rule 2–4 in each ovary.  相似文献

Variation in resistance of xylem to embolism among flowers, leaves, and stems strongly influences the survival and reproduction of plants. However, little is known about the vulnerability to xylem embolism under drought stress and their relationships to the anatomical traits of pits among reproductive and vegetative organs. In this study, we investigated the variation in xylem vulnerability to embolism in peduncles, petioles, and stems in a woody plant, Magnolia grandiflora. We analyzed the relationships between water potentials that induced 50% embolism (P50) in peduncles, petioles, and stems and the conduit pit traits hypothesized to influence cavitation resistance. We found that peduncles were more vulnerable to cavitation than petioles and stems, supporting the hypothesis of hydraulic vulnerability segmentation that leaves and stems are prioritized over flowers during drought stress. Moreover, P50 was significantly correlated with variation in the dimensions of inter-vessel pit apertures among peduncles, petioles and stems. These findings highlight that measuring xylem vulnerability to embolism in reproductive organs is essential for understanding the effect of drought on plant reproductive success and mortality under drought stress.  相似文献

The main stems of three young Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirbel) Franco) trees were dissected to obtain samples of secondary xylem from internodes axially along the trunk and radially within each internode. From these samples, measurements were obtained of tracheid diameter, length, the number of inter-tracheid pits per tracheid, and the diameter of the pit membranes. In addition, samples were obtained along the trunks of three old growth trees and also a small sample of roots for measurement of tracheid diameter. A gradient was apparent in all measured anatomical characters vertically along a sequence among the outer growth rings. These gradients arose not because of a gradient vertically along the internodes, but because of the strong gradients present at each internode among growth rings out from the pith. Tracheid characteristics were correlated: wider and longer tracheids had more numerous pits and wider pits, such that total pit area was about 6% of tracheid wall area independent of tracheid size. A stem model combining growth rings in parallel and internodes in series allowed for estimates of whole trunk conductance as a function of tree age. Conductance of the stem (xylem area specific conductivity) declined during the early growth of the trees, but appeared to approach a stable value as the trees aged.  相似文献

高原鼠兔洞穴系统的恢复是其种群恢复的关键指标之一,洞穴分布的变化可以反映种群的动态。本研究于2014-2016年在青海省祁连县对2.79 hm2高寒草甸内高原鼠兔(Ochotona curzoniae)种群密度、洞穴密度和洞穴的相对位置进行跟踪观测。其中包括6个50m×50m 的灭鼠堵洞处理、6个30m×30m 的灭鼠处理和3个50m×50m的对照处理。分别采用平均最近邻指数和平均拥挤度指数分析洞穴系统中有效洞、弃洞、粪坑和嬉戏坑的分布模式及洞系表现面积,并对各参数进行描述性和相关性分析。结果显示:高原鼠兔种群密度恢复过程中(1)有效洞的空间格局由随机向离散分布转变,弃洞由随机向聚集分布转变,粪坑和嬉戏坑无明显变化趋势;有效洞和弃洞分布格局的恢复都朝向灭鼠前状态,但恢复的都不充分;(2)有效洞最近邻指数与其自身密度正相关;弃洞最邻近指数与其自身密度负相关;粪坑、嬉戏坑最近邻指数与其自身密度无显著相关性;其中,仅粪坑的分布最近邻指数与高原鼠兔种群密度呈显著负相关;(3)有效洞与粪坑、嬉戏坑表现面积的变化情况较为一致,与弃洞呈互补态势;洞系表现面积的变异性远小于洞穴密度。结果说明:(1)高原鼠兔洞穴分布格局和洞穴密度的恢复具有滞后性;(2)有效洞、弃洞的分布格局主要受洞穴密度的影响;(3)高原鼠兔种群的恢复过程中对洞系面积的需求优先于洞口数量。  相似文献
