The first fossil remains of marmosets, an isolated incisor, premolar, and molar, all similar in size toCallithrix species, have been discovered in the middle Miocene La Venta fauna of Colombia. The M1 is referred to a new genus and species,Micodon kiotensis, characterized by a fully developed hypocone and low occlusal relief. The P4 and I1 resemble those ofCallithrix, suggesting a close affinity with callitrichin marmosets. In combining small size with a four-cusped morphology,Micodon demonstrates the shortcomings of typological definitions of platyrrhine families and suggests that small body size may have preceded the tricuspid molar pattern in marmoset evolution. The 14- to 15-Ma date for the La Venta suggests that marmosets are an at least moderately ancient radiation, contrary to estimates based upon the molecular clock.  相似文献

Despite the well-known fact that evolutionary patterns of single genes or sequences are not necessarily paralleled by organismic evolution, using mitochondrial sequence divergence for inferring phylogenetic relationships among hare species is not uncommon. Earlier studies reported interspecific introgression in the genus Lepus that may slur systematic conclusions drawn exclusively from mtDNA data. We examined pairwise divergence in partial mtHV-1 sequences and nuclear gene pools based on microsatellite and allozyme loci separately in a South and North African population of cape hares, Lepus capensis, and did not find significant correspondence on the individual level within either population. Also, the former population had a significantly higher level of mtHV-1 sequence divergence compared to the latter, but levels of individual nuclear gene pool divergence did not differ significantly between the two populations. Hence, the absence of correspondence between mtHV-1 sequence divergence and nuclear gene pool divergence among individuals within a population might be independent of the population-specific level of differentiation among individuals. Our results complement earlier findings in hares, and strongly recommend to include nuclear gene pool evidence for systematic inferences within this genus, even under the absence of mitochondrial introgression.  相似文献

To elucidate the species composition, genetic divergence, evolutionary relationships, and divergence time of Hoplobatrachus and Euphlyctis frogs (subfamily Dicroglossinae, family Ranidae) in Bangladesh and other Asian countries, we analyzed the mitochondrial Cyt b, 12S, and 16S rRNA genes of 252 specimens. Our phylogenetic analyses showed 13 major clades corresponding to several cryptic species as well as to nominal species in the two genera. The results suggested monophyly of Asian Hoplobatrachus species, but the position of African Hoplobatrachus occipitalis was not clarified. Nucleotide divergence and phylogenetic data suggested the presence of allopatric cryptic species allied to Euphlyctis hexadactylus in Sundarban, Bangladesh and several parapatric cryptic species in the Western Ghats, India. The presence of at least two allopatric cryptic species among diverged Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis in Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka was also suggested. In some cases, our estimated divergence times matched the paleogeological events of South and Southeast Asian regions that may have led to the divergence of Hoplobatrachus and Euphlyctis taxa. Especially, land formation at Bangladesh (15–10 Ma) may have allowed the spread of these frog taxa to Southeast Asian areas, and the aridification of central India (5.1–1.6 Ma) might have affected the gene flow of widely distributed species. The present study revealed prior underestimation of the richness of the amphibian fauna in this region, indicating the possible occurrence of many cryptic species among these groups.  相似文献

The obligate association of boletes with their plant partners is critical to understanding biogeographic distribution of these fungi. Only in rare instances are boletes not obligatory associates of plants; the majority are presumed or proven partners in obligate symbioses with a variety of plants. The array of plant-associated distributions provides a potential handle for evaluating bolete distribution on a global scale. However, migration processes remain unclear and distributions are often disjunct. As an illustration of phylogeographic studies of putatively widespread bolete taxa, we present preliminary analyses for Tylopilus ballouii using LSU rDNA and RPB1 sequence data. The LSU data suggest geographic structuring of the tested accessions. However, RPB1 data indicate that long-distance dispersal events (possibly mediated by humans) are possible, or that selection or other factors have obscured geographical patterns. Molecular divergence between samples in RPB1 argues against panmixis, and indicates that populations have been isolated for long periods.  相似文献

A molecular phylogenetic analysis of Cynoglottis was performed to evaluate previous hypotheses based on non-molecular evidence concerning the position of this genus within Boraginaceae tribe Boragineae. ITS-5.8S and trnLUAA sequences from the nuclear and chloroplast non-coding genomes were obtained for four Cynoglottis taxa and selected members of the related genera Anchusa, Anchusella, Gastrocotyle, Brunnera and Pentaglottis. Cynoglottis is monophyletic, but neither trnL nor ITS support a close relationship with Brunnera, unlike previously supposed on morphological grounds. Brunnera is, instead, related to the southwestern European monotypic genus Pentaglottis, with which it forms a basal clade. ITS-5.8S sequences show that Anchusa thessala, a southeastern European annual species of Anchusa subg. Buglossellum, is sister to Cynoglottis and that the two taxa form a clade which also includes the Balkan endemic Gastrocotyle macedonica. Species of Anchusa subg. Anchusa form a separate lineage with high bootstrap support, suggesting that this heterogeneous genus is paraphyletic with respect to Cynoglottis. ITS sequences also discriminate between the Balkan-Apenninic diploid C. barrelieri and the Anatolian tetraploid C. chetikiana, albeit with low support. The molecular results are discussed in the light of karyological, morphological and chorological aspects. This work has been supported by M.I.U.R. 40% 2003 and the University of Firenze.  相似文献

The hypothesis that similar conidial morphologies in aquatic hyphomycetes are a result of convergent evolution was tested using molecular sequence data. Cladistic analyses were performed on partial sequences of 28S rDNA of seven species of Lemonniera, one species of Margaritispora and one species of Goniopila. Lemonniera has tetraradiate conidia with long arms, whereas Margaritispora and Goniopila have typically globose (isodiametric) conidia, with short conical protuberances in a stellate or quadrangular arrangement. Lemonniera and Margaritispora have phialidic conidiogenesis and both produce dark, minute sclerotia in culture whereas Goniopila has holoblastic conidiogenesis and does not produce sclerotia in culture. Goniopila produces a microconidial phialidic synanamorph in culture. All three genera have schizolytic conidial secession. Molecular analyses demonstrate that Lemonniera species are placed in two distinct clades: one within Leotiomycetes; the other within Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes. Margaritispora is placed with Lemonniera species within Leotiomycetes. Goniopila and Lemonniera pseudofloscula are placed within Dothideomycetes. No morphological character was entirely congruent with the molecular derived phylogeny. This suggests that for the group of species studied, conidial shape is not a reliable indicator of phylogeny but more likely the result of convergent evolution in response to the aquatic environment.  相似文献

Sicyopterus lagocephalus is a Gobiidae Sicydiinae (Teleostei) thought to inhabit Indo-Pacific island rivers from Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean to Australs Islands (French Polynesia) in the Pacific Ocean. Its biological cycle comprises a marine planctonic larval phase of several months allowing it to migrate from island to island, but the other species of the genus, with such a larval stage, have generally a more restricted range and are often endemic. To understand the organisation of a species with such a wide distribution, mtDNA cytochrome b sequences were amplified for 55 specimens of this genus covering most of its distribution range together with six close endemic species and other gobiids used as outgroups. The main result is the confirmation of the ubiquity of S. lagocephalus that occurs over a range of 18,000 km in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Two clades were identified within this species, one clustering most of French Polynesian haplotypes and the other clustering most of Mascarene (including Comoros) haplotypes. The overall pattern of distribution and phylogenetic relationship suggests that the lineages leading to endemic species originated earlier than S. lagocephalus. This latter seems to be a secondary migrant species, having colonised both Indian and Pacific Oceans with a few exceptions, situated at the border of the range (Madagascar, Marquesas, Rapa). According to the results, the phylogeny of the Sicyopterus group, the age of the different lineages and the past history of the colonisation of the Indo-Pacific islands are discussed.  相似文献

Lepidoptera is one of the largest insect orders, but the phylogenetic relationships within this order, have yet to be adequately described. Among these unresolved relationships include those regarding the monophyly of the Macrolepidoptera and interfamilial relationships of the true butterflies superfamily Papilionoidea. We present two new mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) belonging to the butterfly family Lycaenidae to explore the phylogenetic relationships existing among lepidopteran superfamilies and true butterfly families from a mitogenome perspective, and to evaluate the characteristics of the lepidopteran mitogenomes. Our consensus phylogeny of the Lepidoptera largely supported the superfamilial relationships (((((Bombycoidea + Geometroidea) + Noctuoidea) + Pyraloidea) + Papilionoidea) + Tortricoidea), signifying a lack of support for a traditionally defined Macrolepidoptera. The familial relationships of the true butterflies concordantly recovered the previously proposed phylogenetic hypothesis (((Lycaenidae + Nymphalidae) + Pieridae) + Papilionidae). The test for the effect of optimization schemes (exclusion and inclusion of third codon position of PCGs and two rRNA genes, with and without partitions) on the resolution and relationships within the Lepidoptera have demonstrated that the majority of analyses did not substantially alter the relevant topology and node support, possibly as the result of relatively strong signal in mitogenomes for intraordinal relationships in Lepidoptera.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships between recent Elephantidae (Proboscidea, Mammalia), that is to say extant elephants (Asian and African) and extinct woolly mammoth, have remained unclear to date. The prevailing morphological scheme (mammoth grouped with Asian elephant) is either supported or questioned by the molecular results. Recently, the monophyly of woolly mammoths on mitochondrial grounds has been demonstrated (Thomas, et al., 2000), but it conflicts with previous studies (Barriel et al., 1999; Derenko et al., 1997). Here, we report the partial sequencing of two mitochondrial genes: 128 bp of 12S rDNA and 561 bp of cytochrome b for the Lyakhov mammoth, a 49,000-year-old Siberian individual. We use the most comprehensive sample of mammoth (11 sequences) to determine whether the sequences achieved by former studies were congruent or not. The monophyly of a major subset of mammoths sequences (including ours) is recovered. Such a result is assumed to be a good criterion for ascertaining the origin of ancient DNA. Our sequence is incongruent with that of Yang et al. (1996), though obtained for the same individual. As far as the latter sequence is concerned, a contamination by non-identified exogenous DNA is suspected. The robustness and reliability of the sister group relation between Mammuthus primigenius and Loxodonta africana are examined: down-weighting saturated substitutions has no impact on the topology; analyzing data partitions proves that the support of this clade can be assigned to the most conservative phylogenetic signal; insufficient taxonomic and/or characters sampling contributed to former discordant conclusions. We therefore assume the monophyly of "real mammoth sequences" and the (Mammuthus, Loxodonta) clade.  相似文献

Relationships of the newly discovered dwarf crocodiles from Mauritania were inferred from mitochondrial 12S sequences. Specimens from 13 different Crocodylus niloticus populations (from East Africa, West Africa and Madagascar) were compared. Additional representatives of the genus Crocodylus (one from Africa and one from Australia), the African genus Osteolaemus and the South American alligatorid Paleosuchus palpebrosus (as outgroup) were included in the analysis. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analyses yielded relationships that were strikingly different from currently prevailing phylogenetic hypotheses. Both analyses consistently revealed two groups, one consisting of the monophyletic West- and Central African populations and the other of a paraphyletic group containing the East African and Madagascan populations. High genetic divergence between those groups indicates separation on the species level. Furthermore ‘Ccataphractus is clearly shown not to be a member of the genus Crocodylus. The resulting nomenclatural changes are discussed. To cite this article: A. Schmitz et al., C. R. Palevol 2 (2003).  相似文献

The monophyletic Pteridaceae accounts for roughly 10% of extant fern diversity and occupies an unusually broad range of ecological niches, including terrestrial, epiphytic, xeric-adapted rupestral, and even aquatic species. In this study, we present the results of the first broad-scale and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of these ferns, and determine the affinities of several previously unsampled genera. Our analyses of two newly assembled data sets (including 169 newly obtained sequences) resolve five major clades within the Pteridaceae: cryptogrammoids, ceratopteridoids, pteridoids, adiantoids, and cheilanthoids. Although the composition of these clades is in general agreement with earlier phylogenetic studies, it is very much at odds with the most recent subfamilial classification. Of the previously unsampled genera, two (Neurocallis and Ochropteris) are nested within the genus Pteris; two others (Monogramma and Rheopteris) are early diverging vittarioid ferns, with Monogramma resolved as polyphyletic; the last previously unsampled genus (Adiantopsis) occupies a rather derived position among cheilanthoids. Interestingly, some clades resolved within the Pteridaceae can be characterized by their ecological preferences, suggesting that the initial diversification in this family was tied to ecological innovation and specialization. These processes may well be the basis for the diversity and success of the Pteridaceae today.  相似文献

Using fourteen random mitochondrial DNA probes, we have examined restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in wild and cultivatedHevea brasiliensis. A total of 395 accessions, including 345 from various prospectings collected in Brazil, Colombia and Peru and 50 cultivated clones, were analyzed. Two other species (H. benthamiana andH. pauciflora) were also included in the study for comparison. The high level of mitochondrial polymorphism allowed us to divide all the accessions analyzed into 212 distinct genotypes. The genetic variability of cultivated clones was limited to four genotypes forming two clusters. In contrast, considerable genetic variation was found in the wild collections. In almost all cases, accessions displaying the same RFLP profile were restricted to the same geographical area (same or neighbor administrative districts). In addition, accessions whose genetic closeness was predicted by RFLP profiles were also clustered according to geographical origin. In a few cases, however, similar RFLP profiles were found for accessions originating from geographically distant districts. This discrepancy can be explained either by seed dispersion (by river) or possibly by similar genetic events occurring independently in different geographical locations. Chloroplast DNA RFLP was also analyzed in 217 accessions, representative of 126 distinct mitochondrial genotypes. Very few differences were found, indicating that the chloroplast genome is more highly conserved than the mitochondrial genome.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships, limits of species, and genera within Lycoperdaceae, were inferred by use of ITS and LSU nu-rDNA sequence data. Lycoperdaceae was confirmed as monophyletic, and Mycenastrum corium as a sister taxon to the ingroup. Four major clades were identified and received weak to moderate support and correspond with the genera Lycoperdon, Bovista, Calvatia, and Disciseda. The Lycoperdon clade includes species from Lycoperdon, Vascellum, Morganella, Handkea, Bovistella, and Calvatia. The structure within the Lycoperdon clade is unresolved and several clades are more or less unsupported, which suggests treating the supported Lycoperdon clade as the genus Lycoperdon. L. nigrescens and L. caudatum occur on single branches and their phylogenetic positions could not be resolved. The phylogenetic analyses identified 31 species of Lycoperdon, 11 species of Bovista, six species of Calvatia, and two species of Disciseda. In Lycoperdon three new species were recognized. A new species closely related to B. limosa is identified and discussed. A classification of Lycoperdaceae is proposed based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses. Morphological characters of species within and among identified clades are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Comparative, quantitative Southern analysis of genomic DNA, using single-copy sequence probes, potentially is valuable for phylogenetic analysis. We have examined 27Drosophila species, belonging to two subgenera, seven species groups, and ten subgroups, using a variety of cloned and characterized probes: twelve cloned sequences fromD. melanogaster, two fromD. pseudoobscura, and two fromD. grimshawi. The data are generally congruent with accepted phylogenetic relationships inDrosophila, and confirm or clarify some previously uncertain relationships. The potential and limitations of the method are discussed.Presented at the FEBS Symposium on Genome Organization and Evolution, held in Crete, Greece, September 1–5, 1986  相似文献

Cyrtomium is an Asiatic genus characterized by anastomosing veins with included veinlets, and comprises about 40 species. We sequenced rbcL and trnL-F sequences of 19 species of Cyrtomium and eight species from related genera in order to elucidate a molecular phylogeny of the genus using maximum-parsimony methods. The phylogenetic trees did not agree with traditional classifications. Cyrtomium was resolved as paraphyletic, and a clade including subseries Balansana of Cyrtomium, Cyrtogonellum, Polystichum subacutidens and Cyrtomidictyum (the BCPC clade) and a second one containing Cyrtomium sensu stricto were monophyletic. The results also implied that: (1) C. uniseriale was synonymous with C. balansae; (2) C. falcatum was likely the female parent of C. devexiscapulae; and (3) based on the rbcL and trnL-F sequence data, C. nephrolepioides and C. grossum were the female parents of C. shingianum and C. chingianum, respectively, although other evidence is needed for the confirmation of this hypothesis.  相似文献

Two cytochromeb pseudogenes were isolated from PCR amplified products ofCebuella pygmaea DNA. These sequences showed insertions and deletions when compared to paralogous mitochondrial sequence regions of several primates. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that an ancestral pseudogene originated sometime before the divergence ofCebuella andCallithrix and that this sequence was later duplicated some 5.6 million years ago. Parsimony and distance analyses indicated thatCebuella pygmaea andCallithrix species of theargentata group were more closely related to one another than any of them was toCallithrix species of thejacchus group, in agreement with previous analyses based on nuclear genes and karyotypic data. These findings also indicated thatCallithrix is a paraphyletic genus, in agreement with previous propositions thatCebuella should be included within the genusCallithrix.  相似文献

During a survey fungal diversity of xylariaceous fungi in Thailand, a new Nemania species, N. plumbea, was identified. Nemania plumbea is characterized by soft-textured grey stromata on a persistent mat of white hyphae, pale brown ascospores with a short germ-slit on the more convex side. It also produces a Geniculosporium-like anamorph in culture. In order to evaluate its phylogenetic relationships among related species and genera, ITS-5.8S rDNA and RPB2 were analysed separately and simultaneously. Results from the phylogenetic analyses indicate that there is close phylogenetic association between N. plumbea and N. aenea. A preliminary account into the natural grouping of Xylariaceae based on ITS-5.8S rDNA and RPB2 sequences is also discussed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to construct a molecular phylogeny of the genus Musa using restriction-site polymorphisms of the chloroplast (cpDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Six cpDNA and two mtDNA sequences were amplified individually in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) experiments in 13 species representing the four sections of Musa. Ensete ventricosum (W.) Ch. was used as the outgroup. The amplified products were digested with ten restriction endonucleases. A total of 79 restriction-site changes were scored in the sample. Wagner parsimony using the branch and bound option defined two lines of evolution in Musa. One lineage comprised species of the sections Australimusa and Callimusa which have a basic number of x = 10 chromosomes, while most species of sections Eumusa and Rhodochlamys (x = 11) formed the other lineage. Musa laterita Cheesman (Rhodochlamys) had identical organellar genome patterns as some subspecies of the Musa acuminata Colla complex. The progenitors of the cultivated bananas, M. acuminata and Musa balbisiana Colla, were evolutionarily distinct from each other. Musa balbisiana occupied a basal position in the cladogram indicating an evolutionarily primitive status. The close phylogenetic relationship between M. laterita and M. acuminata suggests that species of the section Rhodochlamys may constitute a secondary genepool for the improvement of cultivated bananas.Communicated by H.F. The Munidopsidae, one of three squat lobster families in the Galatheoidea, contains the deepest dwelling squat lobsters, with some occurring at abyssal depths. Munidopsids were formerly divided into two subfamilies: Shinkaiinae, for the unusual hydrothermal vent genus Shinkaia; and Munidopsinae for remaining taxa. Four munidopsid genera are currently recognised (Shinkaia, Leiogalathea, Galacantha and Munidopsis) but the largest genus, Munidopsis, is highly diverse morphologically, with multiple genera or subgenera currently in its synonymy. Phylogenetic studies of galatheoids focussed on high level relationships indicate that Leiogalathea is sister to other munidopsids, but the position of Shinkaia with respect to Munidopsis and Galacantha is unclear, as is the reciprocal monophyly of the latter two genera. Phylogenetic analyses of the Munidopsidae based on mitochondrial 16S and COI sequences, sampling all current genera (including the majority of the formerly recognised subgenera), indicate that the generic and former subfamily classifications do not reflect the phylogeny. Shinkaia and Galacantha clades are nested within Munidopsis rendering the genus paraphyletic and the bi-subfamily classification phylogenetically invalid. Many of the Munidopsis clades recovered, however, correspond well to formerly recognised genera or subgenera, indicating good prospects for a natural subdivision of Munidopsis.  相似文献
