The ability of males of Littorina littorea and L. saxatilis to discriminate between mates of different sex, species and size was examined. In partner choice experiments males of L. littorea had the possibility to initiate a copulation with either a female or a male. The males did not show a preference for either sex. There was therefore no evidence that they could determine the sex of a conspecific prior to copulation. The duration of intrasexual copulation was considerably shorter than for intersexual copulation, both in the field and in laboratory experiments. For the two species, intersexual copulations were far more frequent than intrasexual ones. This can partly be explained by the difference in copulation time.Few interspecific copulating pairs were found on the shore. This may reflect a low interspecific encounter rate rather than a mechanism of species recognition. On all of these occasions, however, the active male was of L. saxatilis. It is argued that selection against precopulatory species and sex recognition is a more likely explanation than an hypothesis that states that the required mutations for precopulatory mate identification has not yet occurred. L. littorea males copulated longer with large than with small females. Copulation time was short with parasitized females, which are sterile or of low fecundity. The allocation of mating effort by males is discussed.  相似文献

Attraction of tephritid fruit flies to some food sources can be enhanced by the presence of ammonia derivatives, compounds that are perceived as volatile cues for protein-rich food sources. Using a comparative approach, we (1) evaluated the behavioral responses of females of three invasive fruit fly species, Bactrocera (Zeugodacus) cucurbitae (Coquillett), Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (all Diptera: Tephritidae) to trub (a protein-rich waste brewer’s yeast product generated during the production of beer), Concord grape juice (a protein-deficient material), and ammonium acetate, and (2) identified synergistic and additive interactions between low- and high-attractiveness materials and ammonium acetate. We established the attractiveness of fresh trub, grape juice, and ammonium acetate when tested singly to females of all three fly species. Although ammonium acetate did not enhance significantly the response of females of any species to fresh trub, the most attractive material, ammonium acetate, did significantly enhance females’ level of response to aged trub (a comparatively less attractive material) and to grape juice. Our research found a synergistic interaction between diluted grape juice and ammonium acetate for B. cucurbitae, as well as between aged trub and ammonium acetate for B. dorsalis. For C. capitata, additive effects among food attractants and ammonium acetate were identified. Our findings increase our understanding of fruit fly female olfactory-driven behavior in response to food-based materials and the extent to which ammonium acetate modulates female response to protein-rich and protein-deficient materials.  相似文献

The hormonal regulation of precopulatory behavior in the female Mongolian gerbil was studied using two groups (N = 6) of sexually experienced females. A novel testing procedure was used which involved females living continuously with test males for several days. The test males showed either full sexual behavior (copulating males, C) or only precopulatory behavior (noncopulating males, NC). Experiment 1 investigated changes during the estrous cycle and following ovariectomy in females. Experiment 2 studied the effects of hormonal treatment of these ovariectomized females with 6 micrograms estradiol benzoate (EB) followed by 0.4 mg progesterone (P) or by 0.04 ml arachis oil. When tested with NC males, females displayed a greater range of precopulatory behavior. The patterns could be classified into three groups according to the manner of response to ovariectomy and hormone treatment. Group I patterns (approach, leave, and olfactory investigation of the male's head) were affected by neither ovariectomy nor EB treatment relative to Day 3 levels (Day 3, day preceding estrus; Day 4, estrus), but they were increased to estrous levels by EB and P. Group II patterns (darting, foot-stomping, and the present and piloerection postures) appeared only during estrus, did not appear after ovariectomy, and reappeared only after sequential EB and P treatment. Group III patterns (investigation of the male's anogenital area, allogrooming, ventral gland marking, and sand-rolling) were reduced relative to both estrus and Day 3 levels by ovariectomy and increased above Day 3 levels by EB alone; EB and P treatment further increased Group III patterns to the level of estrus. It is suggested that female precopulatory behavior patterns differ in their responsiveness to ovarian hormones. Estrogen appears to affect those patterns associated with the earliest stages of estrus (Group III).  相似文献

The host suitability of the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), for development of Biosteres arisanus (Sonan), a braconid parasitoid, was compared with three other fruit fly species, namely, Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Weidemann, melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquilett, and Malaysian fruit fly, Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel). In addition, effects of five different fruit species, namely, Carica papaya L. (solo papaya), Musa sapientum (L.) O. Ktze. (apple banana), Mangifera indica (L.) (Haden mango), Terminalia catappa (L.) (false kamani), and Citrus aurantiifolia (Christman) Swingle (common lime), on the parasitization rate of B. dorsalis and sex ratio of parasitoid progenies were evaluated. Effects of host egg to female B. arisanus ratios on parasitoid progeny yields were likewise determined. The host suitability of fruit flies for development of B. arisanus was ranked as: B. dorsalis>C. capitata=B. latifrons=B. cucurbitae. Based on percent parasitization of B. dorsalis, preference of B. arisanus females for host eggs varied with fruit species, however, preferential oviposition displayed by female parasitoids did not influence sex ratios of subsequent parasitoid progenies. Increases in host egg to female parasitoid ratios of 5:1, 10:1, 20:1, 25:1, and 30:1 corresponded with increases in parasitoid progeny yield reaching a plateau at 20:1.  相似文献

We hypothesized that cyclopoids, being predators, have a stronger allelopathic influence than calanoids on life-history variables of herbivorous rotifers. To test this hypothesis, we quantified the allelopathic effects of conditioned medium obtained separately from males and females of a calanoid (Arctodiaptomus dorsalis) and a cyclopoid (Mesocyclops longisetus) on the life table demography of the rotifer Brachionus havanaensis. The conditioned medium of the male and female A. dorsalis and male M. longisetus caused a significant reduction (14–18%) in the life expectancy at birth of B. havanaensis. Gross and net reproductive rates of rotifers reduced significantly on the conditioned medium of male or female A. dorsalis; however, the conditioned medium from either sex of M. longisetus had no significant effect on these variables. The population growth rate, r, varied from 0.53 to 0.64 d?1 depending on the treatment; the r was significantly lower when cultured on the conditioned medium from A. dorsalis (males or females) and female M. longisetus Contrary to our hypothesis, calanoid allelochemicals adversely affected the life history variables of rotifers more than those produced by the cyclopoids.

Intrasexual copulation and mate discrimination by Nodilittorina radiata (Gastropoda: Littorinidae) were studied on a concrete breakwater at Hakodate Bay, southern Hokkaido, Japan. Intrasexual (male–male) copulations were observed in 4.7–21.1% of copulating pairs on the shore. As females were relatively larger than males and males copulated with females larger than themselves, we hypothesized that males choose potential mates larger than themselves. However, two male mates showed no significant size preference in intrasexual copulations, suggesting that males do not choose relatively larger individuals as mates. In a laboratory mate-choice experiment, male N. radiata preferred to mate with females, indicating precopulatory sex identification. They copulated with males, however, at the frequency of 37%, perhaps because of sex misidentification.  相似文献

The adult males of the manure-inhabiting predatory mite,Macrocheles muscaedomesticae, mounted on the backs of pharate female deutonymphs and guarded them from other males for several hours until female emergence and ensuing copulation. I assumed that an adaptive significance of such characteristic precopulatory mate guarding behavior was closely related to inter-male sperm competition. An existence of 2 sexually compatible strains having different esterase isozyme patterns were found through polyacrylamidegel electrophoresis. A double copulation experiment utilizing these patterns as genetic markers was conducted. In 410 F1 progeny from doubly copulated mothers examined, 409 daughters were fathered by the first males, and only 1 was fathered by the second male (F1 males were eliminated because of the arrhenotokous sex determination system). These results seem to indicate that males ofM. muscaedomesticae guard the immature females in order to secure virgin individuals to mate with. Contribution No. 221 from Lab. Entomol., Kyoto Pref. The female Truljalia hibinonis ingests metanotal secretions of the male during copulation. The effect of ingestion on oviposition behavior was compared between three female groups: females that copulated once with an intact male (a male that had not been manipulated; M group); females that copulated once with a male from which most of the metanotal secretion had been removed (NO group); and females that copulated once with an intact male followed by being artificially supplied with metanotal secretion three times (MS group). There were no obvious differences in female fecundity across the three groups. However, within the MS group, intake of an optimal amount of metanotal secretion increased the number of eggs laid. This effect appeared quickly after ingestion and was most effective on the first bout (eggs laid during the first few days after copulation) after ingestion of the metanotal secretion. In contrast, the number of eggs laid had a negative correlation with the amount of metanotal secretion ingested when the amount exceeded the optimal in this experimental arrangement.  相似文献

Female northern muriquis (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) are known to engage in frequent copulations with multiple partners, a pattern that in other primates has been attributed to various functions such as confusing paternity, reducing male aggression, or ensuring fertilization. However, in some female primates, promiscuity is restricted to times when conceptions are unlikely. We investigated whether female northern muriquis might exhibit a similarly mixed strategy by examining their mating, social, and activity patterns during their conception cycles versus other times. Systematic behavioral data were collected during an 18-month period between August 2001 and February 2003 on 13 adult females in a well-studied group at the RPPN-Feliciano Miguel Abdala, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Females mated on an average of 12.5+/-7.9 days during the study period, and spent significantly less time resting and engaging in non-sexual social behaviors, and significantly more time in sexual behaviors on days that they copulated than on days they did not. Three of the eight females for which sufficient data were available copulated significantly more often with their spatially closest non-kin associates, and four of five females that could be analyzed copulated significantly more often with their most frequent non-kin embrace partners. Comparisons between conception and non-conception periods revealed no differences in female activity budgets or in either the number of copulations or the number of different mating partners per female. Our results suggest that some females mate preferentially with close associates and social partners, but there is no indication that females alter their behavior during the cycles in which they conceive.  相似文献

Male and female mate choices were investigated in the grapsid crab,Gaetice depressus (Crustacea, Decapoda) in a laboratory experiment. Males mated indiscriminately with regard to the body size of the females, and frequently copulated with the first females they encountered. In contrast, females showed mate discrimination with regard to the body size of males. The females tended to sample potential mates prior to copulation, and showed both a preference for the larger males and a tendency toward the rejection of males with body sizes smaller than their own. However, they did not discriminate between two males that were either larger or smaller than they themselves. Mate choice by the females of this species is though to be based upon threshold-criterion tactics, in which the body size of the female itself is used as a threshold value.  相似文献

Field observation on the reproductive behaviour in the funnelweb spider,Agelena limbata, was conducted. Copulation occurred primarily during the day. Some females copulated with different mates more than once. Females did not copulate immediately after their final moult and exhibited unpredictable mating receptivity patterns. Most males remained in females' webs for less than 1 day and copulated within the day of the visit. Males did not adopt a mating tactic of staying with a juvenile female until she moulted and matured, searching instead for adult female potential mates.  相似文献

Males of the Japanese stag beetle Prosopocoilus inclinatus show dimorphism in body size. Since females frequently resist male courtship behavior, males often fail to mate after encounters with females. The males of two morphs showed different precopulatory behavior. During encounters with females, small males acted more persistently against females resistance than large males by grasping the female more solidly and as a result, succeeded in copulation more frequently. This persistent precopulatory behavior could be regarded as an alternative mating tactic of small males that are inferior to large males in direct physical competition.  相似文献

A pair of the house musk shrews (Suncus murinus) was placed in an observation box and their interactive behavior was analyzed. The animals often engaged in alarm vocalization, tail biting, and body biting and wrestling, respectively, for the inter-male, inter-female and male-female pairs. Thus, for this species, the interactions were found to be basically aggressive. An analysis of the behavioral sequences suggested that the males have more diverse behavioral responses to other males than do the females. Males smaller in weight approached and escaped more frequently than the larger ones, whereas the weight had no effect on the female pairs. Inter-male interactions consisted mainly of approach (facing) and escape, inter-female interactions included alarm vocalization in addition to the inter-male behavioral patterns, and the main form of male-female interaction was the male's chasing the female.  相似文献

Bactrocera dorsalis and B. correcta are serious pests of agricultural fruit crops. Both species are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical countries, especially in Asia. For integrated management of both Bactrocera species, understanding their olfactory behavior is vital for designing reliable control strategies. In this study, the response of female B. dorsalis and B. correcta adults to three main volatile components of fruits was evaluated using the Y-tube olfactometer. Our results showed that at higher concentrations all volatile components, except α-humulene and its combination with β-caryophyllene, attracted significantly more B. dorsalis than the untreated arm. For B. correcta, all the volatile components attracted significantly more females in the treated arm than the untreated arm. However, at 5% and 1% concentration, all the volatile components had similar attraction for B. dorsalis females. In the case of female B. correcta, the percentage of attraction was similar for all the individual volatile chemicals and their respective mixtures at 10% concentration. While, at 5% and 1% concentrations, the percentage of attraction was significantly higher for a mixture of β-caryophyllene and α-humulene than that of individual volatile components and all possible mixture of two and three volatile components. Based on the olfactometer results, this study concluded that 3-carene and the mixture of β-caryophyllene and α-humulene are strong attractants for female flies of B. dorsalis and B. correcta, respectively. This study might be helpful for the bait application against the female adults of B. dorsalis and B. correcta in farms and orchards.  相似文献

Male mate choice in Brachionus plicatilis is based on information from coronal receptors and contact chemoreception of a glycoprotein signal on the body surface of females. Male mating behavior is modulated by mating signal quality and strength, which determines male mating persistence and circling intensity. We probe the sensory abilities of males by better resolving their discrimination of female age. Males preferentially initiate mating with young females, but not too young. Males circle 0.2 h old females just hatched from resting eggs only about 1/2 as frequently as 12 h old females. Males are even more discriminating of females with whom they copulate, preferring 3 h old females significantly more than 0.2 h or 6 h old females. In contrast, males cannot distinguish between virgin females and those who have already copulated. Similarly, males circled and copulated with females hatching from resting eggs with equal frequency as those hatching from amictic eggs. The counterpoint to male mate choice is female resistance to mating. When males contact females, the females respond with one of four behaviors: no response, acceleration, foot flipping, or coronal retraction. In 65% of male–female encounters, there was no initial response by females. However, when males began circling females, females accelerated 11.1 times more often than when males were absent. The second type of evasive female behavior was foot-flipping, which tends to knock off males attempting to circle the female. In the presence of circling males, females performed foot-flipping behavior three times more often than in the absence of males. Coronal retraction, where they stop swimming and withdraw their corona, was observed less frequently than acceleration or foot-flipping, and there was no difference in the presence or absence of males. These data are interpreted in the context of sexual conflict, where the behaviors that optimize male and female fitness differ. Guest editors: S. S. S. Sarma, R. D. Gulati, R. L. Wallace, S. The relationship between the quality/quantity of male investment and the feeding behavior of females was investigated in a bruchid weevil, Bruchidius dorsalis (Fahraeus), whose males donate nutrition via seminal fluid to females. Experiments on the effect of feeding regimes of both sexes on the mating frequency of females showed that females mated at a higher frequency if given low-quality food or poor male investment. On the other hand, the experiment that examined the effect of male investment quality on female feeding behavior showed that females receiving the high-quality investment exhibited feeding behavior less often. These results suggest that male investment and feeding behavior play the same role for B. dorsalis females. These experiments also showed that there are sex-related asymmetries in mating and feeding behaviors: females mated more often but males fed more often. Moreover, a field census suggested that only males visited non-host flowers to feed on the pollen and nectar during the non-flowering period of the host plants; females always stayed on the host plants irrespective of the flowering phenology. These results suggest that in B. dorsalis courtship role reversal and sex-specific feeding modes are fairly fixed and obligatory, and that male investment, derived from sexual selection, could affect the feeding behavior and spatial distribution of both sexes, which may have far-reaching impact in various ecological contexts.  相似文献

Field observations and laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the relation between male size and reproductive success in the funnel-web spider, Agelena limbata Thorell (Agelenidae), in 2 years. In this species, the body size of males is similar to that of females. In the field, size assortative mating occurred in both years. In 1 year, partial correlation coefficient analysis indicates that male cephalothorax width is a beter predictor of the copulated female cephalothorax width than of the date of pairing. In laboratory experiments, females tended to reject courting males that were smaller in relative body size, and males that were larger in relative body size had greater copulation success. Consequently female rejection of smaller courting males has some contribution to size assortative mating. Since larger females deposited more numerous eggs in the field, larger males are expected to have a higher reproductive success.  相似文献

Male and female predators are often assumed to have the same effects on prey. Because of differences in body size and behavior, however, male and female predators may use different species, sexes, and ages of prey, which could have important implications for wildlife conservation and management. We tested for differential prey use by male and female cougars (Puma concolor) from 2003 to 2008 in Washington State. We predicted that male cougars would kill a greater proportion of larger and older prey (i.e., adult elk [Cervus elaphus]), whereas females would kill smaller and younger prey (i.e., elk calves, mule deer [Odocoileus hemionus]). We marked cougars with Global Positioning System (GPS) radio collars and investigated 436 predation sites. We located prey remains at 345 sites from 9 male and 9 female cougars. We detected 184 mule deer, 142 elk, and 17 remains from 4 other species. We used log-linear modeling to detect differences in species and age of prey killed among cougar reproductive classes. Solitary females and females with dependent offspring killed more mule deer than elk (143 vs. 83, P < 0.01), whereas males killed more elk than mule deer (59 vs. 41, P < 0.01). Proportionately, males killed 4 times more adult elk than did females (24% vs. 6% of kills) and females killed 2 times more adult mule deer than did males (26% vs. 15% of kills). Managers should consider the effects of sex of predator in conservation and management of ungulates, particularly when managing for sensitive species. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Parameters of equations relating wet and dry body weight to length have been calculated for four species of caprellids from the Japan Sea (Possjet Bay), specifically Caprella cristibrachium, C. kroyeri, C. penantis, and C. bispinosa. A common equation was obtained for oxygen consumption rate in relation to body weight. It was shown that within the Order Amphipoda the metabolic rate of caprellids is 1.5 times lower than that of gammarids. The differences in the fecundity of gravid females of four species and females of one species in the spring and summer, respectively, are shown. At the same time the relationship between number of eggs per female and wet body weight of female is approximated by one equation. The equation obtained shows that caprellids represent an ecologically homogeneous group.  相似文献

Females of the fighting fish Betta splendens have been shown to associate with other B. splendens females in a manner reminiscent of shoaling behavior. Since body coloration varies dramatically in this species, and since body coloration has been shown to affect shoalmate choice in other species of fish, we examined the influence of body coloration on association preferences in female B. splendens. In dichotomous choice tests, B. splendens females spent more time swimming near groups of females (regardless of coloration) than swimming near an empty chamber, and chose to swim near fish of similar coloration to their own when choosing between two distinctly colored groups of females. When examining the interplay between body coloration and group size, focal fish spent more time swimming near larger groups (N = 5) of similarly colored fish than swimming near an individual female of similar coloration. However, focal fish showed no preference when presented with an individual female of similar coloration and a larger group of females of dissimilar coloration. These results suggest that association choices in B. splendens females are strongly affected by both body coloration and by group size.  相似文献
