Casing materials and practices used in the cultivation of Agaricus bisporus were evaluated in the cultivation of Agaricus subrufescens, using the best techniques for optimization of production, including the possibility of re-casing of the compost for the production of a second crop of mushroom. Casing based on peat moss, loam soil or coir was compared to casing material mixed with or without spawn-run compost. Based on the results, we conclude that the casing layer used in the cultivation of A. subrufescens should not necessarily be the same as that used in the cultivation of A. bisporus. For the tested strain cultivated with loam soil as casing layer, the ruffling technique is highly superior to CACing and should be pursued in further research. The re-casing of compost in new cycles showed good results suggesting that the currently used compost could be improved.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to study the use of pruning wastes compost (PWC) as a growing media component for ornamental plants. The main physical, chemical and biological characteristics of PWC were analysed in order to evaluate its suitability for use in soil-less cultivation. Six growth substrates were prepared by mixing PWC with peat (P), ground leaves (GL), sand (S) and spent mushroom compost (SMC) in different proportions. Two different pot experiments were carried out to test its characteristics of production using perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.) as indicators and the different media as treatments. The growth experiments showed that PWC required mixing with a nutrient-richer material to produce higher results. Therefore, substrates containing SMC (PWC+P+SMC and PWC+SMC) seems to be the most adequate growing media. After the statistical analysis, we concluded that the PWC could be used as a growing media component.  相似文献

A composted material obtained from forestry wastes and solid phase of pig slurry was evaluated as a substrate component for the production of tomato and lettuce seedlings. Four different substrates were tested: compost (100C), a mixture of 75% compost and 25% peat substrate (75C), a mixture of 50% compost and 50% peat substrate (50C), and peat-based substrate (control). Compost increased the pH of the substrate from 6.3 (control) to 6.9 (100C) but did not affect the electrical conductivity (0.26 and 0.27 mScm(-1), respectively, for control and 100C). Germination and growth of lettuce seedlings were not affected by the substrate type, contrasting with tomato seedlings where the highest growth occurred at 100C substrate. Increasing compost percentage on substrate increased nitrogen, calcium and magnesium availability and, consequently, the concentration of these elements in plant tissues increased. On the contrary, potassium and manganese concentration decreased. Results from the study suggest that the compost studied is a good alternative to peat-based substrates for the production of vegetable seedlings.  相似文献

Two biological control practices are the use of suppressive growing media and the application of biological control agents (BCAs). The goals of this study were: (i) to screen 584 potential BCAs obtained from Fusarium wilt (FW) suppressive growing media; (ii) to evaluate in greenhouse conditions selected BCAs in three growing media with different degrees of suppressiveness of tomato FW. Two isolates selected after screening were identified as Fusarium solani (305) and Streptomyces sp. (A19). Results showed that tomato FW was reduced and total production was improved when both BCAs were applied to a conducive medium (coir fiber). In highly suppressive growing medium (grape marc compost), A19 and 305 inoculations did not improve suppressiveness. In moderately suppressive growing medium (cork compost), only A19 improved this compost to natural grape marc compost suppressiveness level. Therefore, compost suppressiveness of tomato FW depended on the nature of the compost and on the isolates applied.  相似文献

The Brazilian almond mushroom is currently cultivated for its medicinal properties but cultivars are suspected all to have a common origin. The objective of this work was to assess the potential of wild isolates of Agaricus subrufescens Peck (Agaricus blazei, Agaricus brasiliensis) as a source of new traits to improve the mushroom yield and quality for developing new cultures under European growing conditions. The wild European strains analysed showed a good ability to be commercially cultivated on wheat straw and horse manure based compost: shorter time to fruiting, higher yield, similar antioxidant activities when compared to cultivars. They have a valuable potential of genetic and phenotypic diversity and proved to be interfertile with the original culture of the Brazilian almond mushroom. Intercontinental hybrids could be obtained and combine properties from both Brazilian and European germplasm for increasing the choice of strains cultivated by the mushroom growers.  相似文献

Two challenges frequently encountered in the production of ornamental plants in organic horticulture are: (1) the rate of mineralization of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) from organic fertilizers can be too slow to meet the high nutrient demand of young plants, and (2) the exclusive use of peat as a substrate for pot-based plant culture is discouraged in organic production systems. In this situation, the use of beneficial soil microorganisms in combination with high quality compost substrates can contribute to adequate plant growth and flower development. In this study, we examined possible alternatives to highly soluble fertilizers and pure peat substrates using pelargonium (Pelargonium peltatum L’Her.) as a test plant. Plants were grown on a peat-based substrate with two rates of compost addition and with and without arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Inoculation with three different commercial AM inocula resulted in colonization rates of up to 36% of the total root length, whereas non-inoculated plants remained free of root colonization. Increasing the rate of compost addition increased shoot dry weight and shoot nutrient concentrations, but the supply of compost did not always completely meet plant nutrient demand. Mycorrhizal colonization increased the number of buds and flowers, as well as shoot P and potassium (K) concentrations, but did not significantly affect shoot dry matter or shoot N concentration. We conclude that addition of compost in combination with mycorrhizal inoculation can improve nutrient status and flower development of plants grown on peat-based substrates.  相似文献

A simple method is described for separating fungus gnat eggs from soilless growing media. The flotation/extraction method primarily involves the use of a MgSO4 solution (density 1.065 g cm(-3)) and a series of sieving procedures. Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila Lintner eggs were collected in an isolation chamber containing adult fungus gnats. Three soilless growing media were used: Metro-Mix 560 with Scott's Coir, Sunshine LC1 Mix, and Universal SB 300 Mix. Each growing medium was inoculated with 100 fungus gnat eggs. Growing medium samples were processed using separatory funnels and a MgSO4 solution. Eggs were washed through a 250-microm sieve and collected on a 53-microm sieve, and then the eggs were rinsed into glass petri dishes. The sieving process separated fungus gnat eggs from the larger growing medium particulates (perlite, bark, and peat), providing a sample consisting of water, eggs, and fine growing medium particulates (peat). Using a vortex for 60 s increased the number of fungus gnat eggs recovered (37.4 +/- 3.7-67.1 +/- 1.9 [mean +/- SEM]) for all three growing media. The mean number of fungus gnat eggs recovered from the three soilless growing media was significantly different, with the growing medium containing coir (Metro-Mix 560) having the highest recovery rate of 61.0 +/- 2.1. For all three growing media, there was > 50% recovery of fungus gnat eggs. In addition to fungus gnat eggs, this method also may prove useful for quantitative recovery of shore fly (Scatella sp.) eggs and the eggs of other arthropods from soilless growing media.  相似文献

Bacterial endophyte communities of two wheatgrass varieties currently being used in the revegetation of military training ranges were studied. Culturable and direct 16S rDNA PCR amplification techniques were used to describe bacterial communities present in Siberian and slender wheatgrass seeds, leaf tissues, and root tissues following propagation in either sand or a peat-based growing mix. Our hypothesis was that the resulting plant endophytic communities would be distinct, showing not only the presence of endophytes originating from the seed but also the characteristics of growth in the two different growing media. Both culture and culture-independent assays showed the likely translocation of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Gammaproteobacteria from seed to mature plant tissues as well as subsequent colonization by exogenous organisms. Statistical analysis of 16S terminal restriction fragment profiles identified growing media as having a greater significant effect on the formation of the endpoint endophytic communities than either plant tissue or wheatgrass variety. In silico digests of the ribosomal database produced putative identifications indicating an increase in overall species diversity and increased relative abundances of Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria following propagation in sand and Betaproteobacteria following propagation in the peat-based growing mix. Results indicated a substantial translocation of endophytes from seed to mature plant tissues for both growing media and that growing medium was a dominant determinant of the final taxonomy of the endpoint plant endophytic communities.  相似文献

为了探讨不同产地降香黄檀(Dalbergia odorifera)种子和幼苗的表型性状变异规律,该研究以来源于海南、福建、广西、广东等省/区10个产地降香黄檀的种子及在广西桂林培育的幼苗为材料,采用方差分析、相关性分析和主成分分析对其种子和幼苗生长的9个表型性状进行了比较研究。结果表明:降香黄檀种子和幼苗的表型性状存在较大变异,9个性状间均差异极显著,各性状平均变异系数(CV)为12.50%,变异系数范围在7.94%~18.89%,幼苗生长性状的变异高于种子性状的变异,说明种子性状的稳定性较高。相关分析表明各表型性状间及表型性状与地理-气候因子间均存在不同的相关性,各表型性状与经度、纬度及年降水量均无显著相关性,而海拔、年均温度与年降雨量是影响降香黄檀种子和幼苗性状的主要因子。利用主成分综合得分法,筛选出了3个在种子形态、幼苗生长和萌发情况等方面较好的家系,按综合得分排序分别为仙游产地、儋州产地、尖峰岭产地。研究结果可为降香黄檀优良种质资源的筛选提供科学依据。  相似文献

The current views on lentil domestication are based on biological attributes of the wild progenitorLens culinaris ssp. orientalis and on assumptions which have never been tested. Seed dormancy, a major factor in the adaptation of ssp.orientalis to its natural habitat, makes it inappropriate for cultivation, because poor germination causes seed yield following cultivation to be equal to the amount of sown seeds. Higher yield, resulting from the evolution of a non-dormant type can be obtained only after five or six cycles of unprofitable cultivation. It is doubtful that incipient farmers would have undertaken such an endeavor without preexisting knowledge that non-dormant types could eventually be obtained. Experiments involving the sowing of wild lentil would have been much more successful if the non-dormant types were present in appreciable quantities in the seed stock. Establishment of that type in the natural population would have required a period of seven to eight years with favorable growing conditions allowing the non-dormant type to become widespread in the population, followed by massive predation by man reducing the hazard of a population explosion. The close similarity between isozyme profiles of the cultivated lentil and its wild progenitor indicates that lentil cultivation was attempted with seeds derived from different populations and in different areas.  相似文献

In many tropical regions, slash‐and‐burn agriculture is considered as a driver of deforestation; the forest is converted into agricultural land by cutting and burning the trees. However, the fields are abandoned after few years because of yield decrease and weed invasion. Consequently, new surfaces are regularly cleared from the primary forest. We propose a reclamation strategy for abandoned fields allowing and sustaining re‐cultivation. In the dry region of south‐western Madagascar, we tested, according to a split‐plot design, an alternative selective slash‐and‐burn cultivation technique coupled with compost amendment on 30–year‐old abandoned fields. Corn plants (Zea mays L.) were grown on four different types of soil amendments: no amendment (control), compost, ashes (as in traditional slash‐and‐burn cultivation), and compost + ashes additions. Furthermore, two tree cover treatments were applied: 0% tree cover (as in traditional slash‐and‐burn cultivation) and 50% tree cover (selective slash‐and‐burn). Both corn growth and soil fertility parameters were monitored during the growing season 2015 up to final harvest. The amendment compost + ashes strongly increased corn yield, which was multiplied by 4–5 in comparison with ashes or compost alone, reaching 1.5 t/ha compared to 0.25 and 0.35 t/ha for ashes and compost, respectively. On control plots, yield was negligible as expected on these degraded soils. Structural equation modeling evidenced that compost and ashes were complementary fertilizing pathways promoting soil fertility through positive effects on soil moisture, pH, organic matter, and microbial activity. Concerning the tree cover treatment, yield was reduced on shaded plots (50% tree cover) compared to sunny plots (0% tree cover) for all soil amendments, except ashes. To conclude, our results provide empirical evidence on the potential of recultivating tropical degraded soils with compost and ashes. This would help mitigating deforestation of the primary forest by increasing lifespan of agricultural lands.  相似文献

The effect of five commercial potting media, peat, bark, coir, and peat blended with 10% and 20% compost green waste (CGW) on the virulence of six commercially available entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN), Heterorhabditis bacteriophora UWS1, Heterorhabditis megidis, Heterorhabditis downesi, Steinernema feltiae, Steinernema carpocapsae, and Steinernema kraussei was tested against third-instar black vine weevil (BVW), Otiorhynchus sulcatus. Media type was shown to significantly affect EPN virulence. Heterorhabditis species caused 100% larval mortality in all media whereas Steinernema species caused 100% larval mortality only in the peat blended with 20% CGW. A later experiment investigated the effect of potting media on the virulence of EPN species against BVW by comparing the vertical dispersal of EPN in the presence and absence of BVW larva. Media type significantly influenced EPN dispersal. Dispersal of H. bacteriophora was higher than H. megidis, H. downesi, or S. kraussei in all media, whereas, S. feltiae and S. carpocapsae dispersal was much reduced and restricted to peat blended with 20% CGW and coir, respectively. In the absence of larvae, most of the EPN species remained in the same segment they were applied in, suggesting that the larvae responded to host volatile cues. Greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of most virulent strain, H. bacteriophora in conditions more representative of those in the field, using 2.5 × 109 infective juveniles/ha. The efficacy of H. bacteriophora UWS1 against third-instar BVW was 100% in peat, and peat blended with 10% and 20% CGW but only 70% in bark and coir, 2 weeks after application. These studies suggest that potting media significantly affects the efficacy and dispersal of EPN for BVW control.  相似文献

Suppression of root rot diseases of ornamental plants is a potential benefit of formulating soilless container media with compost. A green compost (green nursery compost, GNC), obtained by a circular-economy approach from residues of pruning of woody plants and grass clippings during the nursery activities was analysed for its suppressiveness of root rot diseases using lavender. To this end, a bioassay was develop by formulating potting mixes containing GNC with two rates of peat substitution (25% and 50%) and infested with the root rot pathogens Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani and Phytophthora nicotianae. Contrasting results were obtained by using both substrates with a significant reduction of root rot by S. sclerotiorum, no effect on the containment of that by P. nicotianae, and an increase of symptoms caused by R. solani. The specific suppressiveness observed may be attributed to the colonisation of compost by specific groups of antagonistic microorganisms. This hypothesis was investigated by the analysis of culturable fungal community, which resulted in the isolation of Trichoderma harzianum and T. atroviride as preponderant fungal species. Trichoderma representative isolates exerted in vitro antagonistic activities against the target pathogens with varying efficiencies indicating the employment of multiple complementary mechanisms, which may have contributed to the observed specific suppressiveness. Both substrates containing GNC resulted suitable for nursery cultivation of lavender, showing a growth performance similar to that obtained with peat-based substrate. Present results indicate that on-farm compost is a suitable component of mixed-peat substrates capable to support plant growth and provide specific disease suppression.  相似文献

Formulations of a chitinolytic biocontrol and a plant growth promoting Bacillus subtilis AF 1 were prepared in peat, in peat supplemented with either 0.5% chitin or Aspergillus niger mycelium, or in spent compost obtained from Agaricus bisporus cultivation and were evaluated for biocontrol of two fungal pathogens and plant growth promoting activities on pigeon pea and groundnut. A steady increase in cell numbers of introduced B. subtilis AF 1 was observed in all the formulations at 30 degrees C. The increase in cell numbers was about 5.0 log units. Peat or spent compost inoculated with physiologically active and dormant states of B. subtilis AF 1 showed different time period requirements to attain maximum cell numbers. The presence of chitin or A. niger (in peat) or A. bisporus (in spent compost) as supplement in the carrier material improved the multiplication of B. subtilis AF 1. When used as seed treatments, formulations of AF 1 in peat supplemented with chitin or chitin-containing materials showed better control of A. niger (causing crown rot of groundnut) and Fusarium udum (causing wilt of pigeon pea) than AF 1 culture alone, in both groundnut and pigeon pea. Bacillus subtilis AF 1 formulations promoted seed germination and biomass of both groundnut and pigeon pea even under pathogen pressure. Survival of AF 1 on fresh culture-treated and formulation product-treated plants was similar in pathogen-infested soil.  相似文献

AIMS: Five bacterial strains belonging to Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Ps. corrugata and two fungal strains belonging to Trichoderma viride and Gliocladium virens were evaluated for their efficacy in controlling sugar beet and cucumber damping-off caused by Pythium ultimum. METHODS AND RESULTS: The in vitro antagonistic activity of bacteria against various Pythium spp. was evaluated with dual cultures in various media. Pseudomonas strains inhibited the pathogen better than Bacillus strains. To identify potentially useful antagonist combinations, dual compatibility of antagonists was also evaluated, based on growth in two liquid media containing substrate previously used by other antagonists. Four pairs of bacteria were selected. Sugar beet damping-off biocontrol was attempted with bacterial seed treatments (individually and in pairs). Cucumber damping-off biocontrol was attempted with bacterial seed treatments and bacterial and fungal compost treatments. In sugar beet, satisfactory biocontrol was only achieved with Pseudomonas antagonists. Antagonist combinations did not show any superior biocontrol ability to individual antagonists and compatibility of bacteria in vitro did not correlate with compatibility in vivo. Bacterial seed treatments and fungal compost treatments failed to control cucumber damping-off. Better biocontrol in cucumber was achieved when bacterial antagonists were applied by drenching or by coating seed with bacteria in a peat carrier. CONCLUSIONS: Pseudomonas antagonists were superior to Bacillus antagonists in controlling damping-off in cucumber and sugar beet. Pseudomonas peat inocula maintained a good shelf-life 2 years after preparation. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Pseudomonas peat formulations have the potential for development into commercial biopesticides.  相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. (jatropha) is an undomesticated plant, which has received great attention in recent years for its potential in biofuel production and in greening and rehabilitation of wastelands. Yet the absence of improved cultivars and the lack of agronomic knowledge are limiting factors for successful jatropha cultivation. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the perspectives of a worldwide jatropha breeding program and specifically to (i) estimate variance components and heritabilities for agronomic and quality traits in the early phase of cultivation; (ii) assess phenotypic and genetic correlations among those traits; and (iii) discuss strategies for breeding high yielding jatropha cultivars. Data on various traits was collected from 375 jatropha genotypes, which were tested at seven locations during the first 3 years of growth. The accumulated seed yields and the seed yields per harvest year differed significantly among the testing locations. The estimates of genetic and genotype‐by‐environment interaction variances were significant and estimates of heritabilities were high for all yield parameters. The estimates of genetic correlations indicated a strong association among yield parameters. Oil yield was strongly correlated with seed yield and only weakly with oil content in seeds. The perspectives of a jatropha breeding program are excellent. Improved cultivars, definition of favorable environmental factors and refinement of agronomic management practices are needed to secure sustainable jatropha cultivation.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of a partial substitution of peat for compost on the growth and nutrition of a native shrub (Pistacia lentiscus L.) was tested. Composts were prepared from pruning and municipal solid wastes or pruning waste and sewage sludge. For preparing growing media each compost was added at a rate of 40%, fresh pine bark at 20% or 40% and peat at 20%, 40% or 60%. Aqueous extracts from the substrates did not impair germination of cress (germination bioassay). In relation to plants growing in peat-based substrate (used as a control), plants of the compost-based substrates reached better growth and nutrition, especially when using the sewage sludge-based compost, and the P uptake was notably enhanced. The concentrations of trace elements were far lower than the ranges considered phytotoxic for vascular plants. Detrimental effect derived from using fresh pine bark was not observed.  相似文献

Five media prepared from old peat (OP), white peat (WP) and municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) were used to determine optimum growing media for tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. cv "Atletico"). The mixtures of substrates used were: OP (65%)+WP (30%)+perlite (5%), OP (65%)+MSWC (30%)+perlite (5%), WP (65%)+OP (30%)+perlite (5%), WP (65%)+MSWC (30%)+perlite (5%), MSWC (65%)+WP (30%)+perlite (5%). Various seedling indices were measured in order to assess the quality of the nursery-produced plant. Nursery-produced tomato seedlings grown in WP (65%)+MSWC (30%) displayed quality indices similar to those recorded for conventional mixtures of old and white peat sphagnum, due to a correct balance between the compost nutrient supply and the porosity and aeration provided by white peat.  相似文献

Iprodione seed treatment at 100 g a.i./kg seed had little effect on final emergence in peat-based compost at 60% moisture content (wet weight basis) but caused up to 1.5 days' delay in the time to 50% of the final emergence (t50). The effect was independent of initial seed viability, the conditions and duration of seed storage after treatment and germination temperature. Raising the compost moisture content to 70% resulted in a 9% reduction in final emergence and a 3 day increase in t50. Iprodione had a greater effect in a filter paper test, reducing final emergence by up to 24% and increasing t50; the effects were again independent of initial seed viability and storage conditions.  相似文献

Mucuna pruriens is a well-recognized agricultural and horticultural crop with important medicinal use. However, antinutritional factors in seed and adverse morphological characters have negatively affected its cultivation. To elucidate the genetic control of agronomic traits, an intraspecific genetic linkage map of Indian M. pruriens has been developed based on amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers using 200 F 2 progenies derived from a cross between wild and cultivated genotypes. The resulting linkage map comprised 129 AFLP markers dispersed over 13 linkage groups spanning a total distance of 618.88 cM with an average marker interval of 4.79 cM. For the first time, three QTLs explaining about 6.05–14.77% of the corresponding total phenotypic variation for three quantitative (seed) traits and, eight QTLs explaining about 25.96% of the corresponding total phenotypic variation for three qualitative traits have been detected on four linkage groups. The map presented here will pave a way for mapping of genes/QTLs for the important agronomic and horticultural traits contrasting between the parents used in this study.  相似文献
