Many studies have highlighted the relationship between nutrient fluctuations and enrichment in the process of plant invasion. However, invasion may be also associated with conditions of plant stress, either nutrient depletion or toxicity, in the environment. In this study, we investigate the possible role of nutrient stress in the invasion of Hieracium lepidulum (Stenstroem) Omang, in South Island, New Zealand. We do this by comparing several performance attributes, and their plasticity, for H. lepidulum and a number of co-occurring species, across a series of nutrient depletion and toxicity tests. H. lepidulum had intermediate yields, high root:shoot ratios and high tissue nutrient contents at control nutrient concentrations. H. lepidulum differed in edaphic tolerance from all but Chionochloa flavescens var. brevis, in being insensitive to nutrient dilutions other than nitrogen. The significance of performance in terms of edaphic tolerance and adaptations are discussed. Intermediate yields at control nutrient levels suggest that H. lepidulum should not be competitive compared to high yielding species including Agrostis stolonifera and Poa cita, but should be competitive with lower yielding Coprosma rugosa and C. flavescens var. brevis. Conversely, significant yield decreases under nitrogen limitation stress suggests that H. lepidulum will not likely occupy very nutrient poor sites. H. lepidulum, along with C. flavescens var. brevis, were found to be tolerant of ammonium as an alternative source of nitrogen, while other species were not. These data suggest that H. lepidulum and C. flavescens var. brevis would be relatively tolerant of the stresses associated with acidic soils compared to the other species, but not to stresses associated with absolute shortage of nitrogen. Combined results point to the likely occurrence of H. lepidulum at sites of intermediate fertility. The possible roles of ammonium stress and disturbance reliance in further defining H. lepidulum ecology is discussed.  相似文献

Aim Our aim was to test for changes in growth patterns of three clonally growing plant species (Achillea millefolium, Hieracium pilosella and Hypericum perforatum) between native and invaded regions. We addressed the hypotheses that with differing important life‐history traits, invasive populations perform better than native populations, and that this expected better performance is linked to weakened trade‐offs between individual growth and sexual and clonal reproduction. Location Germany and New Zealand. Methods We conducted field surveys for the three above‐mentioned species in both native German and invasive New Zealand populations, and collected data at both population and individual levels. Results At the population level, the proportion of flowering plants, population size and population density were all higher in invasive populations. Similarly, at the individual level, the number of stolons per plant, stolon–biomass ratio and population crowdedness (local plant density in a specified area around a target plant) were significantly higher in New Zealand. Plant height did not differ between countries, and plant biomass was lower in New Zealand than in Germany for Achillea millefolium and Hypericum perforatum. These two species showed significant trade‐offs between individual growth and sexual and clonal reproduction. Achillea millefolium exhibited a weakened trade‐off in its invaded range, where the same proportion of flowering plants was sustained at much higher levels of population crowdedness than in its native range. Main conclusions The apparent invasion success of the three study species is generally due to better overall performance in their respective invaded ranges. In respect of both Achillea millefolium and Hypericum perforatum, this is driven primarily by increased vegetative reproduction. In contrast, Hieracium pilosella seems to benefit more from increased sexual reproduction in its invaded range. Shifts in trade‐offs as a general trend seem to be of minor importance.  相似文献

Vascular plant species richness is known to often decrease with both increasing latitude and increasing altitude. However, a number of studies have shown the reverse trend and the primary cause of these gradients remains unknown. In the present work, generalized linear models were used to assess the relative importance of latitude and altitude as well as of a number of other factors (mean annual precipita-tion, slope, substrate and forest type) on species richness in temperate rainforests of New Zealand. The effect of Southern beech ( Nothofagus spp.) as dominant canopy species on total species richness was shown to be much smaller than postulated in most previous studies. Within the region studied, altitude had by far the strongest effect on species richness. This effect was independent of latitude and was significant for woody but not for herbaceous vegetation.  相似文献

Abstract Plants that rely on other plants for support (i.e. epiphytes and vines) are common in many forest ecosystems. However, they are poorly understood relative to terrestrial plants, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. To help bridge this gap, we evaluated the diversity and distribution of vascular epiphytes and vines on seven common tree species in a conifer‐broadleaf forest on New Zealand's North Island. Ground‐based surveys of 274 host trees were used to test whether epiphyte and vine diversity increased with tree diameter, and whether diversity‐diameter relationships differed among host tree species. Occurrence patterns of individual epiphyte and vine species were also assessed. We first evaluated the accuracy of ground‐based inventories by comparing surveys of trees made from the ground to those made from a canopy walkway. On average, 1 in 10 species of epiphytes and vines were unseen from the ground. However, sampling accuracy did not differ among the three host tree species growing along the walkway, suggesting unbiased comparisons could be made between hosts. Results from ground‐based surveys showed that species diversity of epiphytes and vines increased with host tree diameter. However, epiphytes showed stronger diversity‐diameter relationships than vines. Epiphyte diversity increased markedly in four host species and less strongly in the remaining three host species. Conversely, vines showed weak diversity‐diameter relationships in all host species. Occurrence patterns of individual species helped to explain diversity‐diameter relationships. All common epiphyte species occurred more frequently on large trees, regardless of host species, but occurrence patterns in most vine species were unrelated to tree size. Rather, the vines often showed strong host ‘preferences’. Overall results illustrate a rich diversity of distributional patterns in New Zealand's epiphytes and vines, and suggest that a similarly diverse set of ecological and evolutionary processes are responsible for them.  相似文献

Abstract. Four contrasting ecotones were sampled to address three questions: (1) Are there ‘ecotonal’ species, (2) Do ecotones possess higher (or lower) species richness than the adjacent communities? and (3) Are exotic species more likely to occur in ecotones? One ecotone was edaphic, one was apparently caused by a positive‐feedback switch, one was environmental/anthropogenic and one was entirely anthropogenic. The exact position of each ecotone was established from the spatial change in ordination scores. Ecotonal species, in the sense of species mainly restricted to the ecotone at the site, were present in all four ecotones. All but one of the ecotonal species were native. The switch ecotone and the purely anthropogenic ecotone also contained native species that were significantly more frequent in the ecotone than in either adjacent community. Species richness was intermediate between that of the two adjacent communities in three of the ecotones. In the environmental/anthropogenic ecotone, species richness was higher than in adjacent communities, but not significantly so. There were appreciable numbers of exotic species in the two ecotones with anthropogenic influence, one of which had a proportion of exotic species intermediate between the two adjacent communities. Contrary to theory, the proportion of exotic species in the second ecotone was significantly lower than in either adjacent community. We conclude that all three features we examined depend on the particular ecological conditions and the ecology of the species present; they are not intrinsic properties of ecotones.  相似文献

Two curculionid weevils, Orthochaetes setiger (Beck, 1817) and Exomias pellucidus (Boheman, 1834) are recorded in New Zealand for the first time. The former has a wide distribution through the eastern South Island, while the latter has so far only been located in a single suburban garden in Dunedin. Both species are polyphagous and flightless. Although neither is expected to cause notable economic damage, their potential to invade native ecosystems makes them worthy of further investigation.

The house mouse, Mus musculus, was first introduced into New Zealand in significant numbers in the early to mid nineteenth century, with genomic components from different sources of the three subspecies M. m. domesticus, M. m. musculus and M. m. castaneus. M. m. domesticus is now widely distributed in New Zealand, with genomic and morphological evidence of M. m. musculus in a few scattered locations. M. m. domesticus/M. m. castaneus hybrids are dominant in the southern third of the South Island. We anticipated that there should be a definable southern contact zone between pure M. m. domesticus and M. m. domesticus/M. m. castaneus hybrids. We tested this hypothesis by screening 170 DNA samples from mice collected in the southern South Island, using a PCR technique which rapidly distinguishes the mitochondrial genomes of the three subspecies. All mice sampled from in or north of Lincoln (43.63° S) had only M. m. domesticus mtDNA, whereas all those from or further south than Hook (44.68° S) had M. m. castaneus mtDNA. Between the two sites, mice carrying mtDNA of both subspecies were found, sometimes in the same building. On present data, this contact zone extends approximately 50 km north to south and some 30 km inland. Classical tests with three nuclear DNA markers confirmed earlier work showing that the nuclear genomes of all mice appeared to be predominantly domesticus-like.We conclude that if purebred M. m. castaneus mice did originally reach New Zealand, extensive backcrossing with M. m. domesticus has made the castaneus nuclear genome virtually undetectable with the tests that we employ.  相似文献

The composition of the essential oils from the seeds of eight species and the leaves of two species of the New Zealand Apiaceae was determined. Gingidia and Scandia species provided seed oils in high yield (>6%) that contained high proportions of phenylpropanoids. Anisotome haastii provided an oil in moderate yield (1.7%), over half of which was comprised of monoterpenoids and no phenylpropanoids. The four Aciphylla species afforded seed essential oils in low yield (0.5%). Three of these contained neither terpenoids nor phenylpropanoids, but contained fatty acids instead. The oil from Aciphylla squarrosa was different as it contained an abundance of phenylpropanoids. The composition of the leaf essential oils of Scandia rosifolia and Gingidia montana differed significantly from those of the corresponding seed oils. Outstandingly, the seed essential oil of G. montana contained 62% estragole and that of Scandia geniculata contained 79% dill apiole. The results of this present work support the conclusions of Mitchell et al. (1998), about the taxonomy of these genera that were drawn from their work with ribosomal DNA sequences viz., that the Gingidia and Scandia genera were closely related to each other and that the Anisotome and Aciphylla genera were not closely related to each other, but were weakly related to the Gingidia and Scandia genera.  相似文献

Cephaloziella tahora, a new species of Cephaloziella is described and illustrated from a lowland forest habitat in eastern Taranaki in the North Island of New Zealand. It has similarities to six other New Zealand species of Cephaloziella, and appears closest in New Zealand to Cephaloziella aenigmatica R.M.Schust. It is defined by a unique combination of features and distinguished from C. aenigmatica and other New Zealand species by having entire, distant leaves that reach the dorsal stem mid-line, and have large conspicuous hemispherical and hemi-ellipsoidal papillae, underleaves on gemmiparous and gynoecial shoots, and by its dioecy. The addition brings the number of New Zealand species of Cephaloziella to 18, 12 of which are endemic to New Zealand.  相似文献

Aim To determine the composition and biogeographical origins of the native and naturalized flora of braided shingle riverbeds in New Zealand and whether the proportion of naturalized species is greater than in similar habitats elsewhere in the world. To test whether regional species pools, landscape matrix configuration, and local riverbed environment are all equally important in determining community structure in these systems. Location The braided reaches of four catchments on each of the eastern and western sides of North Island and South Island, New Zealand. Methods Plotless records of all native and naturalized seed plant and fern species on disturbed mobile surfaces were made over the length of four rivers. Altitude, climate variables, riverbed attributes, and surrounding land‐cover from maps were recorded for each site. For all species, the taxonomy, life form, origin and history, and presence within the province through which the rivers flowed, was obtained from published floras. Direct and indirect ordination and variance partitioning were employed to examine how native and naturalized species composition varies among and within rivers, and the degree to which this variation reflects climate, characteristic of riverbeds, and the surrounding land‐cover. Regression was used to determine how much introduction date and native geographical range influence the frequency of naturalized species. Results The total riverbed flora of 289 species comprises 40% native species and 60% naturalized species, both dominated by Asteraceae and Poaceae. The relative contributions of other plant families differ, and the two groups comprise different life‐form spectra. Native species occur across fewer rivers (mean 1.6 rivers) than naturalized species (mean 2.1 rivers). Species common in at least one river system tend to be widespread, occurring in at least three rivers. The rivers differ in their floras, with distinctions between North Island and South Island, and eastern and western rivers. The South Island rivers have more native species and a higher proportion of their regional native species pools than North Island rivers, whereas they have a lower proportion of their naturalized species pools. Introduction date and native geographical range are correlated with frequency of individual naturalized species. Geographical position and climate, riverbed variables of substrate size and seepage presence, and the type of adjacent land‐cover, differ between rivers and are significantly related to species composition. Land‐cover variables alone account for 46% of the explained variation in species composition, environmental variables alone 32% and components of the environment and land‐cover that co‐vary, 22%. Main conclusions New Zealand shingle riverbeds are among the riparian communities in the world most invaded by naturalized species but comparisons are difficult because studies of similar riverbeds are rare. New Zealand riverbeds are dominated by short‐lived terrestrial species from Eurasia. Native species are most frequent in South Island rivers draining extensive high mountains, and their abundances are determined to a greater extent by riverbed processes than are those of the naturalized species, which are more abundant when the surrounding landscape is modified. The distribution of the naturalized flora is not yet at equilibrium with the environment. Each river has a distinctive flora determined by ambient environmental factors, aspects of the riverbed environment itself, adjacent land‐cover reflecting the presence of native vegetation, the intensity of human modification or use, and invasion history.  相似文献

Extinction and endemism in the New Zealand avifauna   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Aim Species belonging to higher taxa endemic to islands are more likely to go extinct following human arrival. This selectivity may occur because more highly endemic island species possess features that make them uniquely vulnerable to impacts associated with human arrival, specifically: (1) restricted distribution (2) reduced predator escape response, including loss of flight, and (3) life history traits, such as large body mass, associated with greater susceptibility to hunting or habitat loss. This study aims to identify which of these features can explain the selective extinction of more highly endemic bird species in New Zealand. Location North and South Island, New Zealand. Methods Bird species breeding in New Zealand prior to human arrival were classified according to whether they became extinct or not during two periods of human settlement, prehistoric (post‐Maori but pre‐European arrival) and historic (post‐European arrival). We modelled the relationships between extinction probability, level of endemism and life history traits in both periods. Results The prehistoric extinction–endemism relationship can be explained entirely by the selective extinction of large‐bodied species, whereas the historic extinction–endemism relationship appears due to increased susceptibility to introduced predators resulting from the loss of predator escape responses, including loss of flight. Conclusions These features may explain extinction–endemism relationships more generally, given that human hunting and predator introductions are major impacts associated with human arrival on islands.  相似文献

Only four species of freshwater Nematomorpha (Gordiida) and one undetermined Gordius sp. are known from New Zealand. During recent surveys in the South Island we discovered a new species belonging to the genus Gordionus, a genus new to New Zealand. Scanning electron microscopic observations of seven collected specimens revealed that the species is clearly morphologically distinct from all other members of the genus and is characterised by the presence of an extensive row of large bristles on the ventral side of the posterior end in males. This row is much larger than in any known Gordionus species. Analysis of the mitochondrial CO1 gene and of the nuclear 18S rRNA gene showed that the new Gordionus specimens form a monophyletic clade, but with partly extensive internal genetic difference. This indicates that cryptic species might be present, for although there are minor variations in cuticular areoles, other morphological characters indicate little difference between specimens.

Strategies for the coexistence of two caddisflies,Aoteapsyche raruraru and A. colonica(Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) were considered in aSouth Island lake outlet, New Zealand. Three mainstrategies were assessed, firstly that competitionbetween species may be reduced by the presence ofselective predators, secondly, that coexistence ismaintained by periodic disturbance which reducescompetition effects, and thirdly that interspecificcompetition is negated by segregation of either lifehistories or feeding strategies, and diet ormicrohabitat preferences. The first strategy wasrejected, as gut analyses of common fish andmacroinvertebrate predators showed that both speciesof Aoteapsyche were taken in approximately equalproportions to their benthic densities (i.e. 10:1 A. raruraru to A. colonica), indicating thatpredation was unlikely to influence coexistence.Similarly the second strategy was not supported byobservations of flow conditions during the study whichwere insufficient to move the substrata extensivelycolonised by both species of Aoteapsyche. Finally, temporal segregation of life histories wasnot observed, but analyses of larval guts indicatedthat diet was affected by shelter location on thesubstrate. Sampling of substrate microhabitats showedthat A. raruraru larvae occurred on the uppersurfaces, sides and under surfaces of large cobbles, although significantly higher densities were collectedfrom the upper surfaces and sides. In contrast, A. colonica aggregated on the sides and undersurfacesof cobbles. In other streams A. colonica showsa similar microdistribution but in a silted streamlacking seston, and in the absence of A. colonica, A. raruraru larvae occurred mainly onthe under surfaces of stones. Co-existence of thesetwo congeners would seem to be possible bymicrohabitat segregation where food availability ishigh, however in the absence of a plentiful foodsupply and A. colonica the microdistribution ofA. raruraru may differ.  相似文献

The small aquatic snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum is an important invading species in Europe, Australia and North America. European populations are generally believed to derive from accidental introductions from New Zealand, probably dating back to the mid-19th century. We have employed mitochondrial DNA sequences to test the proposed New Zealand origin of European Potamopyrgus, and to learn more about its genealogical history. Using a 481-bp region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene, we identified 17 distinct haplotypes among 65 snails from New Zealand. In marked contrast, only two haplotypes were found across all European samples, which cover a large geographical area. Importantly, these two haplotypes are shared with snails from the North Island of New Zealand. Due to sampling limitations we cannot rule out a South Island origin for one of the haplotypes, but our results clearly demonstrate the New Zealand origin of European populations. The marked divergence among the two European haplotypes implies the successful colonization by two distinct mitochondrial lineages, which is consistent with previous data based on nuclear markers.  相似文献
