Analysis of manganese and zinc concentrations in the scales of salmon and trout from a number of sites showed significant dependence of the levels of these metals in the scales on the levels in the environment. There is some evidence to suggest that in trout scales there is a minimum concentration of zinc above which there is a direct proportion between environmental and scale concentration. It is also possible that the response of trout to environmental zinc differs from that of salmon.  相似文献

The elasmoid scales of anadromous sea trout Salmo trutta L. represent a significant internal reservoir of Ca2+. Although more is known about long-term remodelling of scales in response to calciotropic challenges encountered during smoltification and migration, very little is known about the contribution made by scales to the short-term, minute-to-minute regulation of Ca2+ homeostasis in the extracellular fluid (ECF) during these phases of the life cycle. This gap in the knowledge is partly due to the technical challenges involved in measuring small Ca2+ fluxes around the scales of live fish in real time. Here, this study describes exfoliating, mounting and culturing scales and their resident cells from parr, smolt and adult sea trout from a freshwater environment, as well as from adult sea trout caught in sea or brackish water. All the scales were then examined using an extracellular, non-invasive, surface-scanning Ca2+-sensitive microelectrode. The authors quantified the Ca2+ fluxes, in the absence of any systemic or local regulators, into and out of scales on both the episquamal and hyposquamal sides under different extracellular calcemic challenges set to mimic a variety of ECF-Ca2+ concentrations. Scales from the life-cycle stages as well as from adult fish taken from sea, brackish or fresh water all showed a consistent efflux or influx of Ca2+ under hypo- or hypercalcemic conditions, respectively. What were considered to be isocalcemic conditions resulted in minimal flux of Ca2+ in either direction, or in the case of adult scales, a consistent but small influx. Indeed, adult scales appeared to display the largest flux densities in either direction. These new data extend the current understanding of the role played by fish scales in the short-term, minute-to-minute homeostatic regulation of ECF-Ca2+ concentration, and are similar to those recently reported from zebrafish Danio rerio scales. This suggests that this short-term regulatory response might be a common feature of teleost scales.  相似文献

Strontium was determined in trout scales from a river where it is often difficult to distinguish between sea trout and resident brown trout by coloration or other visual marks. Sr values were compared with values in scales from brown trout caught above the anadromous stretch of the same river and in scales from a river where sea trout coloration is typical. In the first river, the Sr concentration was generally low, and as a mean only 50 ppm higher in scales from individuals classified as sea trout from the anadromous stretch than in brown trout scales from the upper stretch. There was no consistency between fish coloration and Sr concentration in scales from presumed sea trout on the anadromous stretch. Individuals with a typical sea trout coloration could have a lower concentration of Sr than individuals that were classified as uncertain sea trout by coloration. Fish weight did not seem to influence Sr levels. The mean Sr concentration in scales from the typical sea trout colored population in the second river was 2.8 times higher than that of the anadromous part of the first river. The high variability of Sr concentration in sea trout scales may be explained by differences in individual and population life history. The Sr levels reflect differences in saltwater exposure, either expressed by length of stay or concentration of salt in marine habitats. The study has shown that fish coloration is an inadequate mean to distinguish between resident and migratory trout. Nor is Sr determination of scales alone sufficient, because of low inter-group and high intra-group variability in some rivers. However, Sr values can give valuable information on individual and population migration on a large scale.  相似文献

An experiment to induce anadromy in a population of wild brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis , was conducted near Sept-Iles, Quebec, in 1978–1979. Brook trout were captured from the Matamek River, tagged and transported to the Matamek River estuary during late spring and early summer, and allowed free movement between an impassable waterfall 0.7 km upstream and the sea. Fish were recaptured in autumn as they returned to fresh water. Over two years, 34.0% of the released fish were recaptured. Best returns were in the 2+ and 3+ age classes with 38.0 and 62.1% recaptured, respectively. Straying of transplanted fish appeared to be <1%. All age classes included sea run brook trout (sea trout) but the largest percentages of sea trout occurred in older fish. Growth was better in sea trout than in fish which did not develop anadromy, presumably a function of an increased food supply at sea. Severe tagging effects stunted growth and probably suppressed anadromy, especially among younger fish. Sexual characteristics of recaptured fish indicated suppressed maturation of gonads in sea trout compared to fish remaining in fresh water and there was a shift to a larger percentage of females in the sea trout. Comparisons between our results and data on other anadromous Salvelinus species underscore the potential for sea-ranching of trout and char as a moderate effort, high yield aquaculture technique.  相似文献

Crocodylids are better adapted than alligatorids, through a suite of morphological specializations, for life in hyperosmotic environments. The presence of such specializations even in freshwater crocodylids has been interpreted as evidence for a marine phase in crocodylid evolution, consistent with the trans-osceanic migration hypothesis of crocodilian biogeography. The ability to discriminate fresh water from hyperosmotic sea water, and to avoid drinking the latter, is known to be an important osmoregulatory mechanism for estuarine crocodylids. This study was undertaken to determine whether the ability to discriminate between hyper- and hypo-osmotic salinities is determined by habitat, as it is in other normally freshwater reptiles, or whether, like morphological adaptations associated with estuarine life, it has a phylogenetic basis. Two species of freshwater alligatorid were found to drink fresh water and hyperosmotic sea water indiscriminately, while an estuarine population of a normally freshwater alligatorid species drank only fresh water. This indicated that salinity discrimination is determined at least in part by habitat. However, all three crocodylid species tested drank fresh water but not hyperosmotic sea water, suggesting that, in crocodilians, the ability to distinguish between fresh water and sea water is influenced by phylogeny as well as by habitat. The implications of this result are discussed in the context of two alternate hypotheses for the historical biogeography of the Crocodilia.  相似文献

The interaction is reported of selected chemical elements (cadmium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, strontium, and zinc) in cultured sea water, with soft tissues, prismatic calcite of the right valve, and foliated calcite of right and left valves of genetically similar American oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) grown in a natural habitat and in two environmentally controlled experimental systems (flow-through and recycle). The addition of trace elements as algal nutrients in ambient sea water was reflected in higher concentrations of trace metals in shells and soft tissues of oysters grown in experimental systems. Calcium was relatively uniformly distributed in major regions of valves from the three habitats, even though its concentration fluctuated widely in sea water in experimental systems. Magnesium and strontium were most concentrated in valves of oysters grown in the recycle system (magnesium in the prismatic layer of the shell and strontium in the foliated calcite). Iron was uniformly distributed. Cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc were most concentrated in the prismatic calcite of valves from the flow-through system. In soft tissues, calcium was more concentrated in oysters from experimental systems than in those from the natural habitat. Manganese was about equally distributed in soft tissues from the three habitats, whereas copper and iron were more concentrated in soft tissues in experimental systems than in the natural habitat, and were many times more concentrated in soft tissues than in valves from all three habitats. As concentrations of magnesium, strontium, mangenese, zinc, and cadmium increased in valves in experimental systems, pigmentation of valves decreased. The study confirmed the capacity of oysters to concentrate several elements in their valves as concentration of these elements increased in ambient sea water and disclosed the heterogeneous distribution of these elements in major regions of the valves.  相似文献

The effect of the introduction of fry of anadromous sea trout, Salmo trutta L., on the genetic integrity of landlocked brown trout populations was evaluated. Samples were taken from six brown trout populations from streams above impassable waterfalls in the Conwy river system (North Wales, U.K.) in 1989 and 1990. Three of these streams had no known stocking history and three had been stocked with sea trout fry from the lower Conwy system over the last few years. Representatives of these sea trout were collected from two streams in the lower Conwy system and from a hatchery. Allele frequencies at 13 loci, six of which were polymorphic, were determined by starch gel electrophoresis.
The stocked populations were intermediate in their allele frequencies between unstocked brown trout and sea trout samples. A principal component analysis suggested significant numbers of hybrids in all of the stocked streams. This shows that some of the introduced sea trout did not migrate down the falls to the sea, but stayed in fresh water and hybridized with the local population. The significance of this finding for the conservation of the genetic resource of brown trout stocks is discussed.  相似文献

The euryhaline status of steelhead trout, Salmo gairdneri , smolts was challenged in sea water for 2 weeks after which half of the total fish population was returned to fresh water. Acclimation continued and created two test populations in 29%osea water and fresh water. Subsequently these fish were exposed in fresh water or sea water to approximately equal hyperbaric dissolved total gas pressures (ΔP) of 190 mm Hg or about 125% of barometric pressure. Sea water was easier to supersaturate with air and required only about 10% of the entrained air which was required in fresh water at the same temperature and pressure. Mean time to first mortality was sooner in sea water. Mean times to mortality (10–50%) were not significantly different between fresh water and sea water, but there was a noticeable trend for longer survival in fresh water.  相似文献

The sources of toxic trace elements from the rivers to be debouched into the sea through estuaries are either weathered naturally from the soils and rocks or introduced anthropogenicaly from point or non-point sources, in labile form or in particulate form. The chemistry and ecology of an estuarine system are entirely different from the fluvial as well as the marine system. To gain a better understanding of the geochemical behavior of physico-chemical parameters, major ions and trace elements and to examine variations in associated chemical fluxes, 20 water samples were collected throughout the Manakudy estuary and analyzed during pre and post monsoon season. The major ion sequence of abundance is followed as Na > Mg > K > Ca > NO3 > SiO4 > P > NO2 with respect to the mean values during both monsoons. Among the trace metals, the mean concentration of Fe, Zn, Mn, and Pb are 4128, 42, 36, & 5.18 μg/l in premonsoon and 2064, 31,37, 25, & 6.17 μg/l in postmonsoon is found as high when compared to Cu, Cr, Cd and Co. To precisely identify the toxicity level of trace metals in water, the contamination factor (CF) and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were computed. Cu recorded as highly contaminating metal in estuarine water followed Zn based on CF values. The PERI values show moderate to high risk in premonsoon and moderate to significantly high risk in postmonsoon water. The physico-chemical parameters, major ions and trace elements are interrelated components of water quality properties which controls the estuarine water ecosystem. So that the enrichment and overloading of these components are by the geogenic and anthropogenic processes that adversely affects the species diversity, metabolism and the population of habitats. It is recommended for strategic management plans must be implemented to control the overloading of pollutants in Manakudy estuarine water.  相似文献

THE TOXICITY OF ZINC SULPHATE TO RAINBOW TROUT   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The toxicity of zinc sulphate to rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdnerii Richardson) has been investigated in waters of different chemical and physical properties.
Zinc sulphate was less toxic to rainbow trout in hard water than in soft water; when the log concentration of zinc was plotted against log median period of survival of the fish the dose response curve was linear in a very soft water, and curvilinear in a hard water, approaching an apparent threshold concentration. Solutions of zinc sulphate containing calcium chloride were less toxic than those containing an equivalent concentration of calcium as bicarbonate.
An increase in temperature decreased the survival time of rainbow trout in solutions of zinc sulphate in a hard water, but the threshold concentration was not appreciably affected by changes in temperature.
A reduction in the dissolved oxygen concentration of the water increased the toxicity of zinc sulphate, but the effect was reduced when the fish were previously acclimatized to the lower oxygen concentration of the test.
The cause of death of fish in solutions of zinc sulphate was not by the precipitation of mucus on the gills but probably by damage to the gill epithelium.  相似文献

A field experiment conducted in the River Lønningdalselven in spring 1992 supports the hypothesis that salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, infestations may cause premature return of sea trout, Salmo trutta, juveniles, either to estuaries or to rivers. When lice infested (exposed) and uninfested (control) sea trout juveniles (post smolts) were released simultaneously into the sea, exposed fish returned to the estuarine area earlier compared with controls. Within the following two days, exposed sea trout migrated further into freshwater. At that time they were infested with a median of 62.5 lice, dominated by chalimus larvae and late juveniles. Exposed sea trout suffered from an osmoregulatory failure in sea water and this is considered one reason for infested fish returning to brackish water. While only a few control fish returned to the estuary on the day of release, some more returned to freshwater the following four days. During this time they had become heavily infested with copepodids, and carried a median of 150.0 lice. It is suggested that physiological stress and high infection pressure in the sea results in sea trout juveniles returning to estuaries and freshwater.  相似文献

To test whether seawater–acclimatization of hatchery–reared anadromous and freshwater resident brown trout before release increased the survival of adults, smolts were retained 0, 2, 4 and 8 weeks in sea water before release. Total recapture rate increased for smolts retained 4 and 8 weeks in sea water before release relative to the controls. This trend was more pronounced for Freshwater resident than for anadromous stocks, Offspring of anadromous fish stayed longer at sea than offspring of freshwater resident fish. Recapture rates in fresh water were higher for brown trout released in the river than in the fjord in the R, Drammen area, but not in the R. Imsa. In both cases, most fish were recaptured in the sea. Moving into the R. Imsa (relative to other rivers) appeared higher for fish released at the mouth of the river (93%) than in the fjord (47%). Judged from the recapture rates, sea survival appeared to be the same whether released in the fjord or at the mouth of the river.  相似文献

Summary The estuarine turtle,Malaclemys terrapin is able to ionregulate when acclimated to fresh water, 55% sea water or 100% (full strength) sea water, but when in 100% sea water it does not volume regulate successfully. Orbital gland secretions collected by a new eye cup method are very low in animals from all three salinities without salt load. After salt loading the animals from all three groups produce an orbital gland secretion with a sodium concentration greater than sea water. The concentration of ions and kinetics of the response are similar in all three groups. Orbital gland secretion returns to control preload levels well before the injected load is excreted. There is no correlation between the plasma sodium concentration and any of the parameters of the orbital gland response. There is also no correlation between the concentration of sodium in the tear fluid or the rate of sodium excretion and the level of K+-stimulatedp-nitrophenylphosphatase activity in the gland. Some of these unexpected results may relate to the estuarine habitat occupied byMalaclemys.Abbreviations K +NPPase potasium stimulated p-nitrophenylphosphatase - Na–K-ATPase sodium, potassium stimulated adenosine triphosphatase  相似文献

Rainbow trout developed elevated hepatic metallothionein concentrations after 4 weeks in a solution containing zinc, copper and cadmium in a fixed ratio of 400:20:1. Resistance to a combination of these metals increased in proportion to the concentration to which they were exposed for 4 weeks. The concentration of copper but not zinc or cadmium in the low molecular weight proteins separated by gel filtration was related to the concentrations of metallothionein present. The combined toxicity of the metals in the mixture was additive.  相似文献

Based on published data, we reviewed clinal variations in life-history characteristics of anadromous brown trout Salmo trutta from 102 European rivers at latitudes between 54 and 70° N. Growth rate in fresh water, mean smolt age, mean sea age at first sexual maturity, proportion of repeal spawners among adults, longevity, and length of adult life span exhibited latitudinal clines. Brown trout grew faster in fresh water, smolted and matured younger, lived fewer years but spawned more times in the south than in the north. The life-history traits studied were often correlated. Longevity, smolt age and sea age at maturity were negatively and smolt length and proportion of repeat spawners among adults were positively correlated with growth rate in fresh water. Longevity was positively correlated with smolt age and sea age at maturity. The latter also increased with increasing smolt age. None of these significant correlations among life history variables, except for those between smolt age and parr growth and proportion of repeat spawners and parr growth, are latitudinal effects. We do not know to what extent the latitudinal variation in life–history traits reflects phenotypic plasticity and to what extent it is caused by inherited differences among populations.  相似文献

An environmental monitoring study was carried out between 1993, 1995 on the site of a marine trout farm located in the Bay of Cherbourg (English Channel), France. The study dealt with the sea bottom and solid waste from the farm, and concerns the deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 μm, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen and trace metals such as Cu and Zn), bottom oxygen demand, benthic macrofauna, and underwater video surveying. The observed impact was very moderate and localised, and showed no real abnormality. This was mainly due to the strong hydrodynamics characterising the site. A separate phase of the same study dealt with dissolved waste and the water mass (Part One: Current and water quality).  相似文献

The Rosetta estuary was partially separated from the Rosetta branch of the Nile by Edfina Barrage, which controls the Nile discharge into the Mediterranean Sea. The study area covers the Rosetta estuary (lotic environment) and the adjoining seawaters (lentic environment) to investigate the local and seasonal distribution of dissolved and particulate copper and zinc, as well as dissolved cadmium in this estuary and to illustrate its influence on the distribution of these metal forms in the inshore seawaters. Besides, emphasis on the removal of dissolved heavy metals from waters by their adsorption onto suspended matter (SM) was also considered. Contrary to particulate copper (PCu), the vertical values of dissolved copper (DCu) decreased generally with depth. Planktonic scavenging and regeneration processes might determine the vertical profiles of the copper forms. The copper data suggest that the surface sources of DCu exceeded the bottom sources, contrary to the sources of PCu. The markedly high and maximum seasonal averages of DCu in the estuary and inshore seawater in July inspite of the high uptake in summer possibly reflect higher amounts of humic materials. The lowest seasonal average value of DCu in the inshore seawater in January suggests removal of copper in presence of maximum value of SM during highest discharge. The highest regional average of DCu at the estuarine mouth coincided with desorption process during mixing of the fresh and salt waters. The vertical values of dissolved zinc (DZn) and particulate zinc (PZn) showed irregular variations and their high concentrations in the surface of the estuarine and inshore seawater indicate possible land-based sources. The high bottom DZn values, however, resulted from its contribution from the interstitial water of the sediments. The data suggest that the surface sources of DZn exceeded the bottom sources and PZn showed the opposite trend in the open sea area. In the estuary, the maximum seasonal average value of DZn accompanied by the lowest seasonal average of PZn in April inspite of the high uptake in spring suggest that desorption was the dominant process. The minimum regional averages of both zinc forms at the estuarine opening and the highest average of PZn near Edfina Barage are correlated with the amounts of SM, which decreased toward the estuarine mouth. The vertical values of dissolved cadmium (DCd) were much lower in the estuary than the other metals. They showed in both environments irregular variations with depth. The bottom maximum value of DCd can be attributed mainly to contamination from the sediments. There was a distinct seasonal variation of DCd. The minimum seasonal average value of DCd in the estuary in April seems to be caused by its specific binding to living plankton found in abundance. The minimum regional average of DCd value was found at the estuarine mouth. The decrease in Cd concentration due to removal from dissolved state is most pronounced in the early stage of mixing. The correlation coefficients of DCd were positive with salinity and negative with SM, indicating that Cd increased seaward. Statistical correlation between Cd and Zn concludes that the factors affecting their distribution are generally the same.  相似文献

Synopsis The toxicity of zinc to rainbow trout was determined and the 72 h median lethal concentration was found to be 2.00 mg l–1 in freshwater, hardness 7.50 mg l–1 as calcium. An insignificant increase in zinc concentration of internal tissues occurred in fish exposed to 1.52 mg l–1 in freshwater for 72 h. However, there was a significant uptake of zinc by gills and the body surface. Fish exposed to 10 mg l–1 zinc for 72 h in two-thirds sea water showed significant zinc uptake by liver, rectum and muscle, when compared to control fish. Drinking rate decreased from 1.43 to 0.26 ml kg–1 h–1 when zinc sulphate was added to freshwater. Trout adapted to two-thirds sea water showed no decrease in drinking, about 7 ml kg–1 h–1 when zinc was added to the water.  相似文献
