The influence of temperature and chlorophyll concentration on egg production, hatching success, female survival and body size of the copepod Temora longicornis was investigated in situ in the coastal waters of the Eastern English Channel. Twenty samples were collected between February and July 2003 three to four times per month. The maximum daily level of egg production of 75.5 eggs female−1 was observed in March, with minima of 10 eggs female−1 in February and July. Between February and March egg production increased with chlorophyll concentration. At the end of March a decrease in egg production corresponded to a strong increase in chlorophyll concentration that indicated a Phaeocystis-dominated bloom. After this period egg production closely followed the temporal variation in chlorophyll concentration with a maximum of 55.3 eggs female−1 in April during a second peak of chlorophyll concentration. Hatching success varied between 60% and 80% and was not influenced by chlorophyll concentration, in situ temperature or any other biological parameter considered in this study. Increases in temperature from February to July paralleled a decrease in body length and an increase in the percentage of spawning females. Mean female survival followed the variation of both temperature and chlorophyll concentration only between April and July. Temperature and chlorophyll concentration affected the reproductive parameters of T. longicornis differently. Female survival and body size were negatively correlated with temperature, while the highest chlorophyll concentrations were not always favourable for egg production. Therefore the quality of food should not be associated with chlorophyll quantity. Furthermore, the maximum values of egg production in this study are the highest recorded for T. longicornis. This study, conducted for the first time in the Eastern English Channel, showed high levels of productivity of T. longicornis despite a decrease of egg production during a Phaeocystis sp. dominated bloom in April.  相似文献

Laboratory investigations on life history parameters of 2 coexisting cladocerans (Daphnia obtusa. Moina brachiata) from a nearly temporary pond in South Germany revealed that the species have different temperature tolerances and temperature optima. D. obtusa experienced the highest reproductive success at 15 and 20 °C and was able to survive and to reproduce at 2 °C but died at 30 °C. The reproductive success of M. brachiata was highest at 25 and 30 °C and the species could not withstand temperatures <15 °C and ≥35 °C. At temperatures between approximately 20 and 25 °C, where both cladocerans coexisted in nature, M. brachiata showed a faster population growth due to its approximately twofold higher egg production rates (10–12 eggs female−1 day−1 compared to approximately 5 eggs female−1 day−1 in D. obtusa) and its shorter juvenile development (3.3 and 2.4 days compared to 6.3 and 5.3 days in D. obtusa); M. brachiata needs generally only 3 molts to reach maturity while D. obtusa requires 5–6 molts.  相似文献

When acclimated to a continuous, superabundant food supply and constant temperature, Calanus pacificus Brodsky females produce eggs at a weight-specific rate ranging from 0.13 · day?1 at 8°C to 0.21 · day?1 at 15°C. Maximum weight-specific egg production rates do not change with seasonal changes in female body size. The relationship between egg production rate and food concentration is hyperbolic, with threshold and critical concentrations that are high relative to other species for which data are available. Food concentration and temperature influence spawning frequency (i.e., the time required for oocytes to mature) much more than the number of eggs in a single spawning event (i.e., clutch size). The effects of diurnal variations in light intensity on the biomass characteristics and the efficiency of daily growth of Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve were evaluated. The relative importance of changes in carbon specific rates of respiration and organic release to the efficiency of growth was determined. Light intensity was either constant at 130 μE · m?2 · s?1 during the light period or fluctuated throughout the light period from 500 to 10 μE · m?2 · s?1 at rates of either 1 or 12 cycles · day?1. Total daily light was equivalent for all light regimes at 5.6 E · m?2 · day?1.Daily rates of growth remained comparable at ≈ 1 · day?1 under constant and fluctuating light regimes. Cell size as daily mean carbon · cell?1, nitrogen · cell?1 and cellular volume was decreased under diurnally varying light whereas daily mean chlorophyll a · cell?1 was unaffected.Rates of respiration, organic release and gross production were elevated several fold under diurnally varying light in comparison to constant light. Net growth efficiency decreased from 0.69 under constant light to values of 0.50 and 0.38 under 1 and 12 cycles · day?1, respectively. Decreased efficiency of growth under diurnally fluctuating light resulted mostly from greater respiratory activity while organic release remained < 10% of gross production. Increased rates of gross production reflected enhancement in the efficiency of carbon fixation with fluctuating light.  相似文献

The purpose of the present work was to study the seasonal variations in egg production, morphology and hatching success in the cryptic species Acartia tonsa, taking into account variations in female size, population abundance and environmental factors in a turbid and hypersaline estuary. Sampling was performed during the austral warm (18–23°C and 32–36 salinity) and cold seasons (5–7°C; 32–38) in Bahía Blanca Estuary (BBE), Argentina, during 2007 and 2009. Field-collected females were incubated in the laboratory simulating in situ environmental conditions, and specimens from fixed samples were measured using optical and scanning electronic microscopy. Acartia tonsa’s marked seasonality in its reproductive traits was found to ensure its permanence in the water column all over the year. During the warm season, small-sized females were observed to invest their energy in the production of subitaneous eggs with high hatching success and smooth appearance (12.95?±?2.38 eggs f?1 day?1 and specific egg production rate (SEP) of 16.57%C f?1 day?1). During the cold season, females invested C in body mass as well as in the production of resting eggs of three different morphotypes (6.56?±?3.2 eggs f?1 day?1 and SEP of 7.37%C f?1 day?1). Although these morphotypes were found to show differences in surface ornamentation, they exhibited the same delayed hatching behaviour. The eggs with shorter spines were found to integrate the resting egg bank in BBE. Our findings confirming a delayed egg hatching behaviour and a great tolerance to low temperatures and high salinities in the A. tonsa population in BBE suggest that this possible strain is a valuable phenotype for aquaculture.  相似文献

Centropages typicus (Krøyer) and Pseudocalanus sp. are the two predominant copepods in the Continental Shelf waters immediately south of Long Island, New York. The estimated, in situ, rate of egg production for Centropages typicus ranged from 5 to 230 eggs female?1 day?1 during this study. Variability was partly attributed to seasonal variation in water temperature and partly to variations in the physiological condition of individual females. It could not be shown that the ability to produce eggs varied seasonally due to factors related to food. Egg production by Pseudocalamus sp. is probably from 1–10 eggs female?1 day?1. The two reproductive behaviours result in average abundances of adults that are approximately the same, although the peaks are at different times of the year, indicating that Centropages typicus has a higher mortality between the egg and adult stages than Pseudocalanus sp.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, adults and nauplii of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa Dana feed on planktonic ciliates and rotifers. Adults have a higher clearing rate for planktonic ciliates and rotifers than for phytoplankton. Adult copepods have a maximum clearing rate of ≈200 ml copepod−1 · d−1 for large ciliates, with lower clearing rates for small ciliates. Nauplii have higher clearance for small than for large ciliates. Addition of ciliates or rotifers to the diet of A. tonsa enhances egg production; this effect is due to improved food quality. Microzooplankton may be an important component of the diet of A. tonsa even when phytoplankton are plentiful. Selective predation by copepods probably influences the population dynamics of planktonic ciliates and rotifers in coastal waters.  相似文献

The small cyclopoid copepod Oithona is widely occurring in polar areas; however, knowledge of its biology and ecology is very limited. Here, we investigate the population dynamics, vertical distribution, and reproductive characteristics of Oithona spp. from late winter to summer, in a subarctic fjord of West Greenland. During winter–early spring, the abundance of Oithona spp. was low (1.8 × 103 ind. m?2) and the population was mainly composed of late copepodites and adults, whereas in summer, abundance peaked and younger stages dominated (1.1 × 106 ind. m?2). In general, all stages of Oithona spp. remained in the upper 100 m, with nauplii exhibiting a shallower distribution. Although no general seasonal migration was found, a deeper distribution of the adult females in winter was observed. The mean clutch size of Oithona spp. varied from 16 to 30 eggs per female, peaking in summer. Egg production rates (EPR) were low in winter–early spring (0.13 ± 0.03 eggs female?1 day?1) and reached maximum values in summer (1.6 ± 0.45 eggs female?1 day?1). EPR of Oithona spp. showed a significantly positive relationship with both temperature and protozooplankton biomass, and the development of the population seemed to be appreciably affected by temperature. Oithona spp. remained active throughout the study, stressing the key importance of these small copepods in high-latitude ecosystems, especially in periods when larger copepods are not present in the surface layer.  相似文献

We measured egg production rates of the estuarine calanoid copepodAcartia tonsa in Mobile Bay, an estuary in the northern Gulfof Mexico. Two stations were sampled approximately monthly,one at the mouth of the bay and the other just beyond the mouthin the salinity front between bay and coastal waters. Over thewhole year, temperature was the most important environmentalvariable controlling egg production. Rates increased with temperatureup to 30°C and 140 eggs female–1 day–1. We foundno evidence of food limitation. There was no correlation betweenegg production and phytoplankton abundance, nor increased eggproduction in response to supplements of phytoplankton addedto natural food, suggesting that non-phytoplankton food wasimportant in the diet. At the highest egg production rates,the amount of the storage lipid triacylglycerol (TAG) in adultfemales was greatly diminished, to <50 ng female–1.This suggests that lipids in the diet can be very tightly coupledto egg production. Both egg production and TAG content of femalesshowed significant variability on spatial scales of 3–15km, especially in relation to the salinity front separat ingwater outwelling from the bay from open coastal water. For organismsthat are using copepods and their eggs as food, this variabilitywould result in a heterogeneous food environment, both in termsof the abundance of food and its nutritional content.  相似文献

The fecundity and somatic growth rates of Calanus agulhensisand Calanoides carinatus, the dominant large calanoid copepodsin the southern Benguela upwelling system, as well as the fecundityof several other common copepods, were measured between Septemberand March of 1993/94 and 1994/95. Mean egg production of mostcopepods was low at >30 eggs female-1 day-1 {Calanoides carinatus23.7, Calanus agulhensis 19.0, Neocalanus tonsus 16.1 and Rhincalanusnasutus 26.1), whereas the mean fecundity of Centropages brachiatuswas significantly greater (83.6 eggs female–1 day-1).This study also presents the first comprehensive field estimatesof the fecundity of Nanno-calanus minor (mean: 26.1 eggs female–1day–1, range: 0.0–96.2 eggs female–1 day–1)and of somatic growth of N6 and all copepodite stages of Calanoidescarinatus (decreasing from 0.58 day–1 for N6 to 0.04 day–1for C5). Somatic growth rates of Calanus agulhensis also declinedwith age: from 0.57 day1 for N6 to 0.09 day1 for C5. Data ongrowth rates were used to assess the relative importance offood [as measured by total chlorophyll (Chi) a concentration],phytoplankton cell size (proportion of cells >10 µm)and temperature to the growth of copepods. Multiple regressionresults suggested that fecundity and somatic growth rates werepositively related to both Chi a concentration and phytoplanktoncell size, but not to temperature. Although it was not possibleto separate the effects of Chi a concentration and phytoplanktoncell size, data from previous laboratory experiments suggestthat copepod growth is not limited by small cells per se, butby the low Chi a concentrations that are associated with theseparticles in the field. Despite growth not being directly relatedto temperature, a dome-shaped relationship was evident in somespecies, with slower growth rates at cool (<13°C) andwarm (>18°C) temperatures. The shape of this relationshipmirrors that of Chi a versus temperature, where poor Chi a concentrationsare associated with cool and warm temperatures. It is concludedthat the effect of food limitation on growth of copepods outweighsthat of temperature in the southern Benguela region. Feeding rates of Brachionus plicatilis were studied for two types of food — algae Monochrysis lutheri and baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisae. The main regularities of changes in filtration rate and ration were studied in small culture volumes (1 ml) for adult amictic females depending on food concentration (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 · 106 cells · ml−1), ambient temperature (16 and 26 °C), and salinity (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ppt). B. plicatilis ration did not depend on the salinity, but was largely determined by temperature and food concentration. It was found that at 16 and 26 °C the dependence of the ingestion rate (ration) on food concentration differed greatly. A hypothesis was suggested to explain this phenomenon. A critical concentration of both types of food at which the increase in the rotifer ration ceased is 4 · 106 cells · ml−1. This is the minimum “background” food concentration for B. plicatilis mass cultivation. The average rations measured at the concentration of M. lutheri and S. cerevisae of 4 · 106 cells · ml−1 where 1.3 ± 0.1 and 4.8 ± 1.3 μg dry weight. · ind−1 · day−1 at 26 °C and 0.54 ± 0.1 and 1.9 μg d. w. · ind−1 · day−1 at 16 °C, respectively. The rations obtained in the laboratory were corrected for the conditions of rotifer commercial production in the open field in summer time. Many suspension-feeding copepods show omnivorous feeding behavior. However, the relative contribution to egg production of herbivorous and heterotrophic feeding in copepods remains an open question. In this study, we quantified pigment ingestion rates and egg production rates of the planktonic calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa from July to November of 1986 in Long Island Sound, a large temperate estuary. Pigment ingestion and egg production rates were better correlated to the > 10-µm chlorophyll size fraction than total chlorophyll. Maximum pigment ingestion and egg production rates were observed during the fall bloom in September. Pigment ingestion and egg production rates were linearly related. However, pigment ingestion rates accounted for only 48% of the variance in egg production rates. If female A. tonsa had fed entirely as herbivores over the course of the season, the observed gross efficiency of egg production, K1 = egg production ratelpigment ingestion rate, in terms of nitrogen, would have been 0.68. This growth efficiency is considerably higher than the expected value, K 1 = 0.38, for this species based on laboratory studies of herbivorous feeding. We suggest that the ratio H = K 1/K1 is a measure of the fraction of egg production that is due to herbivorous feeding. Thus, we infer that herbivory accounted for 56% (0.38/0.68) of egg production in A. tonsa in this study. The ratio H is an useful tool in examining the relative contribution to egg production of herbivorous and heterotrophic feeding in copepods.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal egg production rates (Er) and egg hatchingsuccess in the copepods Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus helgolandicuswere measured in the North Sea from March to September. Foodavailability was monitored by chlorophyll and protist concentrationsand three size fractions of seston fatty acids. Duckweed, Lemna gibba, was grown in 12 m2 shallow ponds in the Negev desert, during 12 months of continuous cultivation, beginning April 1984. Average monthly growth rates varied with the season of the year. The lowest daily yield, 2·6±0·4 g dry weight m−2 day−1, was obtained during January. Highest daily yields, 7·9±2·6 g dry weight m−2 day−1 and 7·0±1·2 g dry weight m−2 day−1, were obtained during September and May. A 35% decline of the yield was seen during midsummer (July), 4·8±1·2 g dry weight m−2 day−1. The average rate for the year was 5·15±1·7 g dry weight m−2 day−1. The protein content of the plants ranged from 30 to 38% per unit dry weight.Growth performance is discussed in relation to the prevailing climatic conditions.  相似文献

Potential predictors of egg quality were assessed in whiting Merlangius merlangus L. permitted to spawn in a tank from which eggs were collected. These included fertilisation rate, the proportion of viable buoyant eggs, egg diameter, and egg wet and dry weights; all were influenced by temporal effects and were negatively correlated with days from start of spawning. The spawning period was protracted, from February to June. Mean daily egg production per female was 2.74 ± 2.43 g and 2338 ± 2075 eggs, equivalent to 14.6 ± 13.1 g kg?1 day?1 female?1. Egg diameter was 1.21 ± 0.04 mm, egg wet weight 1.20 ± 0.21 mg, dry weight 0.10 ± 0.02 mg, and mean fertilisation rate and hatching rates were 76.8 and 73.3%, respectively. The incubation period ranged from 72 to 80 degree days and was dependent on temperature (x) and described by the equation y = 25.92 e?0.1219x. Realised fecundity was also assessed to determine if this gave a more accurate measure of reproductive potential, and this was compared with potential fecundity estimated from predictive regressions on fish length from fisheries data. Realised egg production of 20 females of 185 g mean weight and 256 mm fork length was 4 444 360 (95% CL 4 093 961–4 743 018), similar to predicted seasonal egg production based on gravimetric fecundity measurements of wild caught fish.  相似文献

Differences in grazing behavior among Hereford (HH), 50% Angus-50% Hereford (AH), 50% Simmental-50% Hereford (1S1H) and 75% Simmental-25% Hereford (3S1H) lactating cows grazing foothill range were measured using vibracorders and pedometers to estimate daily grazing hours and distance traveled, respectively. There were four 10-day grazing periods during July and August. Cow weight, calf weight and milk production estimates were taken prior to Periods 1 and 4. During Periods 1, 2 and 4, the 48 cows were located on a daily basis between 06.00 and 09.00 h, and each animal location was recorded on gridded aerial photo maps. Pasture use was defined as the amount of total area utilized for grazing for the four periods.The overall mean for daily grazing hours was 9.4 h day−1 (633 observations) and no significant breed type differences were found. Daily grazing hours increased from 8.0 to 10.0 h day−1 during the 40-day observation period. Milk production and calf age significantly influenced daily grazing hours and the partial regression coefficients were 0.05 h·day−1·kg·day−1 and −0.02 h·day−1·day−1, respectively. The overall mean distance traveled was 4.7 km day−1 (82 observations) and followed the same trend as daily grazing hours. For each kilometer of travel, 2h were spent grazing during the four grazing periods. The 1S1H cows traveled less (P < 0.05) than HH, AH and 3S1H cows. Breed type means were 5.0, 4.8, 4.1 and 4.8 km day−1 for HH, AH, 1S1H and 3S1H cows, respectively. The overall mean for pasture use was 103 ha per cow (47 observations) and breed type was not significant in explaining variation in pasture use. For each kilogram increase in calf weight (adjusted for cow condition), pasture use increased by 0.5 ha (P < 0.05). Thus, the grazing behavior of different breed types under rangeland conditions was similar.  相似文献

Short-term feeding (min to h) of the copepod Temora longicomis (Müller) was investigated in the laboratory and in the field by monitoring the increase in gut fluorescence of adult females. Laboratory feeding studies using the diatoms Thalassiosira pseudonana (Hust.), T. weissflogii (Hust.) and Ditylumbrightwellii (West) showed that ingestion rates increased with increased food concentration and cell size. The maximum ingestion rate was 9.5 ng chl. equiv. female −1. h −1 on a diet D. brightwellii. Clearance rates decreased with increased food concentration and decreased cell size. Maximum clearance rate was 1.9 ml. female−1·h−1 also on a diet of D. brightwellii. On two of three occasions, ingestion and clearance rates in the field were twice as high at night as during the day. Night rates were similar to laboratory rates in the chlorophyll range found in the field. Diel differences in feeding activity in the field appeared to have been behaviorally induced rather than being related to vertical migration of individuals into food rich layers.  相似文献

Chroococcoid cyanobacteria, (mean size = 0.79 μm, likely Synchetocystis limnetica Popovsk) and total eubacteria (mean size = 0.33 μm), from Lake Baikal, USSR, were enumerated using epifluorescence microscopy and sized with image analysis. Bacterial densities ranged from 0.44 · 106 cells ml−1 at 250 m to 2.3 · 106 cells ml−1 at the surface. Mean eubacterial abundance was 1.3 · 106 cells ml−1. Cyanobacterial densities were more variable, ranging from 0.42 · 104 cells ml−1 at 250 m to 9.8 · 104 cells ml−1 at the surface, with a mean abundance of 2.7 · 104 cells ml−1. The cyanobacteria, in particular, occurred in clusters resembling “marine snow”. Our results indicate that Lake Baikal picoplankton size and density are similar to other large lakes but may have a more diverse community structure than in other large oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献

Reproduction of the dominant copepods Centropages typicus andTemora stylifera was studied at a permanent station in the LigurianSea (north-western Mediterranean). Seasonal patterns of eggproduction, clutch size, egg size and female prosome lengthwere followed from January 1998 to December 1999. Female carboncontent and weight-specific egg production were compared inautumn 1998 and spring 1999. Reproductive patterns of C. typicusand T. stylifera were very similar, indicating that reproductionwas affected by the same environmental factors. Reproductiveactivity was highest in autumn in both species and years. Asecond peak of egg production was observed in early summer,which was less intense in 1999 after a bloom of salps. Egg productionrates reached maximal values of 33.5 and 33.3 eggs female–1day–1 and annual means of 10.8 and 11.7 eggs female–1day–1 in Centropages and Temora, respectively. Maximalweight-specific egg production was 0.21 day–1 in bothspecies in November 1998, when female carbon contents were 6.7(C. typicus) and 12.0 µg (T. stylifera). No statisticalrelationship between egg production and food availability ortemperature was detected. Reproductive activity did not reflectthe seasonal abundance patterns, with C. typicus dominatingin spring and T. stylifera in autumn.  相似文献

Measurements of hydrography, water transparency, chlorophyll (Chl) a and egg production rates (EPRs) by females of Calanus marshallae Frost, Calanus pacificus Brodsky, Eucalanus californicus Johnson, Epilabidocera longipedata Sato, Pseudocalanus mimus Frost, Centropages abdominalis Sato, Acartia longiremis Lilljerborg and Paracalanus parvus (Claus) were estimated at weekly intervals between 17 July and 2 September 1997. Production of eggs was determined in 24 h incubations to examine the effects of environmental variability on EPR, to detect the possibility of food limitation of EPR, and to evaluate the hypothesis that growth rates of females are size dependent. During the study, an anomalous downwelling event occurred, possibly in response to the 1997 El Niño, which allowed us to determine how El Niño events affect EPRs of coastal copepods. The larger copepods Calanus marshallae, Calanus pacificus and Centropages abdominalis showed the highest egg production and specific growth rates during the period of active upwelling (18 July-13 August, water temperatures 8-13C, Chl a concentration 4.7-16.2 l-1 and water transparency 3-5 m). After 27 August, the 1997-98 El Niño arrived off Oregon, creating a downwelling situation. Upwelling winds ceased, the thermocline intensified, temperature and transparency increased (to >18°C and 16 m), and Chl a declined to <2 g l-1. Densities of the common coastal species declined greatly as well. Paracalanus parvus became the dominant species, and Eucalanus californicus, Epilabidocera longipedata and Corycaeus anglicus became common in our samples. EPRs for the larger boreal copepods (Calanus and Centropages) declined greatly during El Niño;; the smaller copepods, Pseudocalanus mimus, A.longiremis and Paracalanus parvus, showed low but relatively constant egg production and specific growth rates during both upwelling and downwelling events. Over the entire study period, only three species produced eggs at its maximum rate (24-28 eggs female-1 day-1), Pseudocalanus mimus which averaged 4 eggs day-1. All other species had EPRs that were two or five times below their maximum EPR. Thus, EPRs were not related to body size, contrary to our expectations. Hatching success was variable among species. Values as low as 20-40% were found for all species at least once during the study period, suggesting that occasionally a substantial portion of egg production may not be viable.   相似文献
