  • 1.1. The pharyngeal movements of Trionyx sinensis during submersion where recorded with physiological instruments.
  • 2.2. Anoxia or hypercapnia caused a marked increase in breathing rate of tested turtles during voluntary diving, and in anoxia there was a significant increase in the frequency of aquatic pharyngeal movements while hypercapnia had a slight or no effect on the frequency of these movements.
  • 3.3. During voluntary diving when turtles could easily extend their heads out of water to breathe air, the frequency of rhythmic pharyngeal movements was lower; but during forced submersion, the frequency was higher and the movements were continuous.
  • 4.4. The frequency increased more rapidly and greatly when turtles were in forced submersion than when they dived freely and could easily surface to breathe in N2.
  • 5.5. The frequency of pharyngeal movements of T. sinensis during diving in an aquarium with water depth of 30 or 45 cm was markedly higher than that at a water depth of 15 cm. Disturbing stimuli also influenced the aquatic rhythmic pharyngeal movements of T. sinensis.

  • 1.1. A 12 week program of treadmill exercise (0.7 m/sec, 30 min per day, five days per week), significantly increased the myoglobin concentration of the femorotibialis medius muscle in bar-headed geese as compared to nonexercised controls.
  • 2.2. The myoglobin concentration differed among various muscles within a bird. The highest myoglobin concentrations were found in the primary flight muscle, the pectoralis major, and in cardiac muscle.
  • 3.3. By physically conditioning their muscles, bar-headed geese may improve the oxygen flow to mitochondria and, thereby, enhance their ability to exercise under conditions of low oxygen partial pressures.

  • 1.1. Brain trehalase specific activity and trehalosemia were measured during the end of the developmental life cycle in non-diapausing and diapausing insects.
  • 2.2. During non-diapausing development, trehalosemia reached maximum values at the beginning of pupal life. Then a constant decrease was observed up to the end of adult life.
  • 3.3. The specific activity of brain trehalase was maximum when the insects were in active feeding periods, minimum activity appearing during moulting phases.
  • 4.4. During diapausing development, trehalosemia was very high at the beginning of pupal life, particularly when insects were exposed to wintering conditions.
  • 5.5. When diapause was broken, trehalosemia fell, announcing adult emergence.
  • 6.6. Brain trehalase activity showed the same qualitative variations as in non-diapausing larvae, but with rather lower values.
  • 7.7. During pupal life, brain trehalase activity decreased markedly during the long period necessary to obtain diapause breakdown.
  • 8.8. Wintering conditions allow a progressive increase of brain trehalase activity, which preceded the fall of trehalosemia.

  • 1.The levels of water, Na, K, Ca and Mg in blood serum, brain and kidney and aldosterone level in blood of Naja haje haje were studied during the different phases of the annual cycle.
  • 2.The water content in the tissues studied displayed only minor changes as the animals passed from one phase to the other.
  • 3.A significant increase in Na was recorded in the brain during the different phases indicating a depressed sodium pump, whereas the blood Na level showed a significant decrease during hibernation.
  • 4.K increased in blood serum, brain and kidney during hibernation, while a nonsignificant decrease was found in blood serum during arousal. The brain may act as a potassium reservoir.
  • 5.An increase in Ca and Mg concentration was recorded in blood serum, brain and kidney during prehibernation and hibernation. The data suggested a homeostatic function in the transport and metabolism of these cations.
  • 6.Aldosterone exhibited a highly significant decrease especially during hibernation. The aldosterone regulation of ionic composition is discussed.
  • 7.Na/K and Ca/Mg ratios in the brain may explain the decreased excitability during winter torpor.

  • 1.1. During locomotion the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis (L.) exhibits recurrent cyclical movements; in water this behaviour consists of anteriorly and posteriorly directed shell movements and on land these same movements are coupled with longitudinal contractions and extensions of the foot.
  • 2.2. Motoneurones innervating the foot, body wall and column have been identified. The activity of some of these neurones is correlated with shell movements during spontaneous locomotor discharges in reduced preparations.
  • 3.3. The structure of these motoneurones has been determined by intracellular injection of the fluorescent dye Lucifer Yellow CH.

  • 1.1. Electrophysiological responses to NaCl, sucrose, and a complex mixture containing NaCl, glucose, fructose, phenylalanine and valine were obtained from large, medium, and small hair sensilla on the proboscis of the fleshfly Sarcophaga bullata.

  • 4.4. Although the masseter muscle had only type I fibers, CA-III content was similar to that in mixed-fiber type muscles such as the biceps femoris muscle.

  • 1.Total lipids, free fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids and total cholesterol in blood serum, liver, brain, cardiac and skeletal muscles of Naja haje haje were determined during the different phases of the hibernation cycle.
  • 2.A sharp decrease in the level of total lipids of blood serum and all tissues occurred during hibernation. Upon arousal, lipogenesis is commonly restored.
  • 3.Elevated concentrations of serum free fatty acids predominated in pre-hibernation and hibernation periods, while the tissues recorded highly significant declines during hibernation.
  • 4.Occurrence of marked decreases in triglycerides contents of serum and tissues except the cardiac muscles in the hibernation and arousal phases.
  • 5.Sharp increases in the phospholipid contents of blood and the selected tissues were recorded during hibernation. The level declined in both liver and cardiac muscles in arousing animals.
  • 6.Total cholesterol level was lowered in blood during hibernation. The cardiac muscles showed a highly significant decrease while liver, brain and skeletal muscles showed elevations in the same phase.

  • 1.1. The role ofinterleukin-1 (IL-1) in sepsis-induced muscle proteolysis was assessed by treating septic rats with recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist (rIL-Ira).
  • 2.2. In initial experiments, we tested the effectiveness of IL-Ira in preventing muscle proteolysis induced by administration of IL-1.
  • 3.3. When normal rats were treated with rIL-α (three intraperitoneal doses of 100 μ g/kg body weight each over 16 hr), total and myofibrillar muscle protein breakdown rates, measured as release oftyrosine and 3-methylhistidine, respectively, by incubated extensor digitorum longus muscles, were significantly increased.
  • 4.4. This metabolic response to IL-α was completely abolished by rIL-Ira, administered as three intraperitoneal doses of 3 mg/kg body weight each over 16hr.
  • 5.5. In subsequent experiments, sepsis was induced in rats by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP); non-septic rats were sham-operated.
  • 6.6. Treatment of septic rats over 16hr with a total dose of 25mg/kg body weight of rIL-Ira reduced, but did not normalize, the increased muscle protein breakdown rates seen during sepsis.
  • 7.7. When the dose of rIL-Ira was more than doubled and given as a constant infusion at a rate of 4.2 mg/kg body weight/hr for 16 hr, the increased rate of muscle proteolysis in septic rats was normalized.
  • 8.8. The present study offers the first direct evidence that IL-1 is involved in the regulation of muscle proteolysis during sepsis.

  • 4.5.No sex differences were observed in tail artery preparations.
  • 5.6.Phentolamine reduced the maximal tension induced by KCl in the tail artery but not aortic artery preparations. This effect was not sex dependent.
  • 6.7.No differences in the vascular smooth muscle responsiveness to acetylcholine or sodium nitrate was observed between groups or within different vascular beds.
  • 7.8.The increased sensitivity of males to adrenergic challenge could explain in part some of the existing sex differences in cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

  • 1.1. Molecular polymorphism of tropomyosin from various muscle sources of the scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, was investigated by electrophoretic and immunochemical methods.
  • 2.2. Treatment of the muscle sources with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) prior to tropomyosin preparation was found useful to prevent proteolytic degradation of this protein.
  • 3.3. Electrophoretic and immunochemical analysis revealed that at least six kinds of tropomyosin isoforms may exist in scallop muscle tissues.
  • 4.4. The tropomyosin isoforms showed tissue-specific distribution in amounts and molecular species among the various muscle sources.

  • 1.1. Plasmin activity in the conditioned medium of Gin-1 cells, a human gingival fibroblast cell line, was stimulated by Porphyromonas endodontalis, a putative pathogen of oral submucous abscesses, in a time- and dose-dependent manner.
  • 2.2. P. endodontalis stimulated the activity of plasminogen activator in both the conditioned medium and the cell lysate. The plasminogen activator in Gin-1 cells was approx. 50kDa by zymography.
  • 3.3. The conditioned medium of Gin-1 cells exposed to P. endodontalis stimulated the conversion of human serum prekallikrein to kallikrein.
  • 4.4. These results suggested that P. endodontalis stimulates the plasminogen activator-plasmin system in Gin-1 cells, and that activated plasmin plays a role in the progress of periodontal tissue inflammation.

  • 1.1. White muscle of yellowfin tuna is subject to a form of deterioration known as “burnt tuna”.
  • 2.2. TEM and SDS-PAGE were used to quantify cellular differences in deteriorated white muscle of yellowfin tuna.
  • 3.3. Electron micrographs showed a significant loss of Z-disc integrity and an increase in intracellular edema in burnt tuna.
  • 4.4. Electrophoresis established that a specific doublet of proteins, 42 kD and 46 kD was lost.
  • 5.5. Proteolysis of isolated myofibrils incubated in calpain (EC 3.4.22.17) was greatest at pH 7.5 and was selective for intermediate molecular weight proteins.
  • 6.6. This evidence suggests that burnt tuna is a specific and limited proteolysis of myofibrillar structural proteins characteristic of calpain proteolysis.
