An overgrowth of muscle protruded through the ventral portion of the sixth abdominal segment of Penaeus aztecus and P. setiferus. This hamartoma was observed in 33 postlarval shrimp and is the first reported from a crustacean. Even though afflicted individuals represented a small proportion of the shrimp examined, nearly all such individuals were collected from the presumed most heavily polluted site. We suggest an unidentified pollutant as the cause of the abnormality.  相似文献

This study describes a multiplex PCR assay based on the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene to identify the penaeid shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus, Farfantepenaeus duorarum, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and Litopenaeus setiferus, all native to the Gulf of Mexico, and the exotic Litopenaeus vannamei. The assay was validated using positively identified adult shrimp and confirmed by direct sequencing. Samples of postlarvae and early juveniles collected in the eastern and western Gulf of Mexico were tested yielding 119 F. aztecus, 78 F. duorarum and five L. setiferus. Reliable identification of the morphologically similar early life stages of F. aztecus and F. duorarum has important implications for management and conservation. Similarly, the ability to identify L. vannamei is relevant as early detection could help minimize the ecological impact if this species escapes to the wild.  相似文献

A primary mycosis of larvae of the white shrimp, Penaeus setiferus, is described. The disease first became apparent in larvae in the second protozoeal stage and disappeared as the shrimp reached the first mysis stage. Affected shrimp became immobilized by near complete tissue destruction and replacement by the expanding mycelium. The fungus was found to be Lagenidium sp. and was infective to larval brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus.  相似文献

Host response of two penaeid species, Penaeus aztecus and P. setiferus, from the Gulf of Mexico to the pathogenic fungus Fusarium sp. isolated from the California brown shrimp, P. californiensis, was studied in vivo. The hemocytic response to this fungus was traced histologically in the gills. Both species showed complete resistance to infection by the fungal spores when normal or wounded shrimp were held in seawater containing the spores or when spores were injected directly into the shrimp in low concentrations. Complete melanization and encapsulation of the micro- and macroconidia were observed. Spore dosages of 3.2 × 106 or more were lethal, apparently due to mechanical blockage of the blood sinuses of the gills.  相似文献

Size-selective predation by small (30-50 mm carapace width) and large (90-110 mm) Callinectes sapidus when feeding on three different size classes of Litopenaeus setiferus was investigated. Laboratory experiments using no-choice and multiple-choice designs were carried out. Active and passive components of predation were evaluated by comparing the probability of attacking (active) and capturing (passive) shrimp. Small C. sapidus consumed shrimp of all size classes in similar frequencies during multiple and no-choice experiments, and the probability of attacking and capturing shrimp of all size classes was similar. Large crabs consumed large shrimp with a significantly higher frequency during multiple than during no-choice experiments, and the probability of capturing large shrimp was significantly higher than medium and small ones. Results in the present study suggest that size-specific consumption rates of C. sapidus are mainly the result of a passive mechanism associated with the salience of shrimp to predation. However, an active component of foraging behaviour related to the decision to attack an alternative prey whilst consuming one that has already been captured, helps to explain the differences in shrimp consumption between multiple and no-choice experiments. The distribution and abundance of nemerteans in the brackish-water lakes of Sea Rim State Park, Texas, near the Louisiana border, were studied and compared with other macrobenthos during one year. Six of 93 macrobenthic species collected were nemerteans (0.9% of the total number of specimens). Only one species of nemertean, Carinoma sp., was consistently present. This species is the most ubiquitous and, probably, the most abundant nemertean in the estuarine systems of the Texas coast. Carinoma sp. was collected at Sea Rim from a salinity range of 0–21 ppt and at other Texas estuaries from 2–26 ppt. Preliminary experiments with Carinoma sp. as predator and as prey indicated that it feeds on polychaete worms and in turn is fed upon by white (Penaeus setiferus) and brown (P. aztecus) shrimp.  相似文献

Freshwater inflows from river diversions may affect nekton populations by altering the salinity and temperature of estuarine waters. To investigate the influence of these environmental variables on the growth and survival rates of brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus and white shrimp Litopenaeus setiferus, we conducted field experiments in May and September 2007 to expose experimental animals to the range of different combinations of salinity and water temperature that commonly occur in an estuarine environment. Growth rates for shrimp held in mesocosms for approximately 7 days were compared among four locations and three treatments; locations were identified by the dominant marsh vegetation and distance from the Gulf of Mexico (low to high salinity: Intermediate, Brackish, Saline UE = Saline Up Estuary, Saline DE = Saline Down Estuary). At each location, the treatments were replicated four times and included shallow water with additional food, shallow water without food added, and deeper water (an attempt to expose animals to lower temperatures). Our experiments were designed to test the null hypothesis that shrimp growth and survival rates did not differ by location or treatment. Both brown shrimp and white shrimp grew more slowly at the Intermediate than higher salinity locations. Potential prey (benthic infauna) biomass was relatively low at both the Intermediate and Brackish locations in May, and both shrimp species consistently grew faster in mesocosms where food was added. We conclude that reduced growth in low salinity environments is likely due to the combined effects of increased metabolic costs and less food in these areas. River diversions that reduce estuarine salinities over a large portion of available habitat during peak recruitment periods may reduce overall growth rates and shrimp productivity in the affected areas.  相似文献

Detection and avoidance of oxygen deficient sea water (≤3.0 ppm dissolved oxygen) by white shrimp, Penaeus setiferus (Linnaeus), and brown shrimp, P. aztecus (Ives), was measured under laboratory conditions. Shrimp were acclimated to control salinity (22%.) and temperature (22°C) for a minimum of 2 days and to the test chamber for l h before recording data. A shrimp's response to treatment water was determined by its (1) response time, i.e., time in min to first entrance into the control side of the chamber, and (2) total time spent in the treatment side of the chamber.White shrimp detected and significantly avoided intruding water containing ≤1.5 ppm dissolved oxygen. Brown shrimp were more sensitive and avoided water having dissolved oxygen concentrations ≤2.0 ppm. Behavioral responses of white shrimp and brown shrimp to hypoxic water included an initial increase in general level of activity, retreat from hypoxia by walking or swimming, rapid eye-stalk movements, and flexing of their antennal scales. In addition, white shrimp exhibited abdominal flexures and apparent exhaustion.Hypoxia along coastal Louisiana, west of the Mississippi River Delta, could markedly affect shrimp stocks by increased natural mortality through (1) physiological stress, (2) increased inter- and conspecific competition, and (3) increased predation.  相似文献

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill impacted Louisiana''s coastal estuaries physically, chemically, and biologically. To better understand the ecological consequences of this oil spill on Louisiana estuaries, we compared the abundance and size of two Gulf shrimp species (Farfantepeneus aztecus and Litopeneus setiferus) in heavily affected and relatively unaffected estuaries, before and after the oil spill. Two datasets were used to conduct this study: data on shrimp abundance and size before the spill were available from Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF). Data on shrimp abundance and size from after the spill were independently collected by the authors and by LDWF. Using a Before-After-Control-Impact with Paired sampling (BACIP) design with monthly samples of two selected basins, we found brown shrimp to become more abundant and the mean size of white shrimp to become smaller. Using a BACIP with data on successive shrimp year-classes of multiple basins, we found both species to become more abundant in basins that were affected by the spill, while mean shrimp size either not change after the spill, or increased in both affected and unaffected basins. We conclude that following the oil spill abundances of both species increased within affected estuaries, whereas mean size may have been unaffected. We propose two factors that may have caused these results: 1) exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may have reduced the growth rate of shrimp, resulting in a delayed movement of shrimp to offshore habitats, and an increase of within-estuary shrimp abundance, and 2) fishing closures established immediately after the spill, may have resulted in decreased fishing effort and an increase in shrimp abundance. This study accentuates the complexities in determining ecological effects of oil spills, and the need of studies on the organismal level to reveal cause-and-effect relationships of such events.  相似文献

The effect of artificial Spartina structure on the predation rates of four estuarine fish on juvenile brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus Ives) was examined under laboratory conditions. Vegetative structure reduced predation rates of pinfish and Atlantic croaker but did not affect predation rates of red drum and speckled trout. Pinfish and Atlantic croaker were inefficient predators, needing several strikes before successfully capturing prey. This inefficiency, necessitating repeated detection of prey organisms, probably contributed to the reduced predation rates by these fish in vegetated treatments. Although pinfish and speckled trout appeared to be strictly visual feeders, Atlantic croaker and red drum could apparently detect and feed upon shrimp through other sensory mechanisms. Differences in the mode of feeding among the fish, however, did not appear to be related to the effect of vegetative structure on predation rates. Over all of the experiments, predation rates on shrimp (50–69 mm) ranged between ≈2 and 13 shrimp·fish?1·day?1, and there was a positive relationship between the number of shrimp eaten and the size of the predator.  相似文献

Variability in infaunal bivalve abundance in the Wadden Sea is largely determined by recruitment variability. Post-settlement, but pre-recruitment bivalve mortality is high and related to the occurrence of their most abundant predator, the brown shrimp Crangon crangon. To investigate if the mortality patterns of newly settled bivalves can be explained by the foraging behavior of brown shrimp, we carried out experiments on shrimp functional response to three size classes of juveniles of the Baltic Tellin Macoma balthica. The functional response curves for all three prey sizes (0.62 mm, 0.73 mm, and 0.85 mm) were the hyperbolic Holling's type II. The attack rate was highest for the smallest prey size (a = 0.31, medium and large prey a = 0.22); the handling time was longest for the largest prey size (Th = 29 s, small and medium prey Th = 15 s). Thus, a large body size is advantageous for the bivalves over the whole density range. Knowledge of individual foraging behavior is needed to model predation mortality of bivalves. The consumption rates in the experiment were theoretically high enough to account for M. balthica mortality in the field.  相似文献

In some systems, the identity of a prey species' dominant predator(s) may not be constant over time. In cases in which a prey species exhibits different responses to various predator species, such changes in predator identity may have population-wide consequences. Our goals were to determine (1) whether mortality of and refuge use by the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, were predator-specific, and (2) how effects of prey size and habitat interacted with predator type. Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) exerted twice as much predation pressure as mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), although not equally as great on large (female) and small (male) shrimp. Mummichog, which fed preferentially on large shrimp, forced a partitioning of habitat between the two shrimp size classes. In contrast, large and small shrimp occupied similar habitats when subjected to striped bass, which fed on both size classes equally. Refuge use of grass shrimp depended on predator type. In the presence of mummichog, which occupied shallower depths in the water column than striped bass, shrimp stayed deep and close to structural habitat. Striped bass, which were deeper, caused shrimp to move high in the water column away from structural habitat. When both predators were present, shrimp distribution was similar to that when only striped bass were present, striped bass predation rate was enhanced, and overall mortality was higher than with either predator alone. Results suggest that at times when mummichogs are the dominant predators, large (female) shrimp experience higher predation than small (male) shrimp and are physically separated from their potential mates. When striped bass are more abundant, male and female shrimp may share a similar, shallow, less structure-oriented distribution and be subjected to higher mortality. When both predators are present, mortality rates may be higher still. This predator-, size-, and habitat-specificity of grass shrimp behavior suggests significant population and distribution consequences of fluctuating predator guilds and fluctuating cover of structural habitats in the field.  相似文献

The feeding habits of Okamejei kenojei were studied using 592 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Taean, Korea from April 2008 to March 2009. O. kenojei is a bottom‐feeding carnivore that consumes mainly shrimp, fishes, and crabs. Its diet also includes small quantities of amphipods, mysids, cephalopods, euphausiids, copepods, isopods, and polychaetes. The total length (TL) of individuals in this study ranged from 8.2 to 49.0 cm. Cluster analysis based on %IRI (index of relative importance) identified three size classes. Group A (< 20 cm TL) ate primarily caridean shrimp and amphipods; group B (20–30 cm TL) ate exclusively shrimp; and group C (> 30 cm TL) ate penaeoidean shrimp, fishes, and crabs. O. kenojei showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Although shrimps were the primary food consumed by all size groups, the proportion of shrimp in the total diet decreased and the consumption of fishes and crabs gradually increased with the body size of O. kenojei. Size of the prey organisms also increased. Smaller individuals fed mainly on small prey, such as amphipods, mysids, and small shrimp, whereas larger individuals preferred larger prey, such as larger shrimp, fishes, and crabs. The size‐related diet breadth and the percentage of empty stomachs were significant; the diet breadth gradually increased with body size, whereas the percentage of empty stomachs decreased. Seasonal changes in the O. kenojei diet were not significant, but shrimp constituted 97.3% of the summer diet by %IRI. Seasonal changes in diet breadth and the percentage of empty stomachs were not significant.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted with two predatory fishes, Lagodon rhomboides (Linnaeus) and Syngnathus floridae (Jordan & Gilbert), to determine if prey selection was a result of predator preference or prey accessibility. Prey consisted of two species of caridean shrimp, Tozeuma carolinense (Kingsley) and Hippolyte zostericola (Smith), that commonly inhabit seagrass meadows. Natural diets of both predators revealed that selection ofTozeuma and Hippolyte was not related to their field densities. My experiments demonstrated that natural prey selection was a consequence of prey accessibility, not predator preference. Experiments examining the role of prey size in predator preference revealed that large individuals were significantly preferred over small individuals. Observations of prey behavior indicated that prey motion affected predator choice. These results suggest that predator preference was primarily determined by prey visibility and that the combined effects of prey size and motion contributed to the visibility of these prey.  相似文献

The tadpole shrimp Lepidurus arcticus frequently occurs in Greenland ponds and shallow lakes with a soft bottom. Literature describes it as mainly a scavenger, feeding on the sediment. Previous observations of its behaviour suggest, however, that large specimens can catch Daphnia pulex when swimming in the water. Experiments were set up to test how efficiently Lepidurus hunts Daphnia and if a functional response between predator and prey exists. It was also tested if temperature and Lepidurus size played a significant role for the predation rate. Lepidurus and Daphnia were sampled from ponds at Zackenberg in northeast Greenland (74° N, 21° E) in August 1998 and were placed in small containers (0.5 l) at desired temperatures. Lepidurus was capable of consuming 5–15 Daphnia per hour at ambient temperatures (5–20 °C) and changes in the temperature had apparently no significant effects on the predation rates. There was, however, a clear difference in feeding activity between size groups, the rates of larger Lepidurus (> 12.5 mm) being two to three times greater than that of smaller specimens (8–10 mm). For both size classes, the predation rates rose with increasing prey concentrations and the saturation levels were far above natural prey densities. Small-sized Daphnia (1.6 mm) were removed at significant faster rates (t-test, p<0.05) than larger ones (2.4 mm) by Lepidurus when offered in combination but not when offered separately. Although the recorded predation rates were biased due to the manipulated conditions (e.g. increased encounter rates), Lepidurus appears to be an active and efficient predator on planktonic prey, and its presence in arctic lakes and ponds may consequently have a significant impact on the structure of the planktonic food web. The calculated energetic advantages of plankton as supplement to a benthic diet seemed low (~5% of body weight per day).  相似文献

A series of laboratory experiments was conducted at Inhaca Island Marine Biological Station, Mozambique, in order to assess the separate effects of turbidity, prey density, substrate type, pneumatophore density, and the combined effects of turbidity with the latter three, on rate of predation by the thorn fish Terapon jarbua (Forskål, 1775) on white shrimp Penaeus indicus and brown shrimp Metapenaeus monoceros.Significant interactions between turbidity and the other three factors on shrimp predation for both prey species were detected. Regardless of prey density, increasing turbidity decreased predation on P. indicus, but not on M. monoceros, for which increasing densities reduced the protective effect of turbidity. Increasing prey density increased predation on P. indicus in clear water, and increased predation on M. monoceros in low and high, but not in intermediate turbidity or clear water. The presence of a substrate suitable for burying decreased predation on M. monoceros in clear water, but not in the turbidity levels used. In clear water, solely sandy-shell substrate afforded protection to P. indicus, while in turbid water, no substrate offered significant protection and muddy substrate even increased prey vulnerability to fish probably as a result of increased preys' locomotor activity. Raising pneumatophores density seems to lower the protective value of turbidity for both species. In clear water, only low and high structure density provided a deterrent effect on predation on P. indicus; in turbid water, intermediate and higher structure density increased predation. Increasing structural complexity reduced predation on M. monoceros linearly in clear water; but in low turbid water it increased. In high turbid waters, the increase was only significant in intermediate pneumatophore density. High structural complexities impair the pursuing capacity of fish and thus decreased predation rates. The results indicate that the effective provision of shelter of different habitats depends not only on the various environmental parameters analysed, but also on the way they interact and on the behaviour of prey and predator as well.  相似文献

Rates of body growth were measured for three species of rocky intertidal gastropods: Thais (or Nucella) lamellosa (Gmelin), T. (or N.) canaliculata (Duclos), and T. (or N.) emarginata (Deshayes). Three size classes of each predator species were grown experimentally in cages at two tidal heights on four size classes of each prey species: Semibalanus cariosus (Pallas), Balanus glandula Darwin, and Mytilus edulis L. Growth was also assessed for Thais canaliculata feeding on Mytilus californianus Conrad, and Thais emarginata feeding on Chthamalus dalli Pilsbry.Rates of body growth varied as a function of predator size, prey size and prey species. With one exception (large Thais canaliculata) intermediate sized Balanus glandula promoted the most rapid growth for all sizes of all three species of Thais; thus these potentially competing predator species have the same highest ranked prey. Among prey promoting slower growth, those encountered commonly in the normal habitats of the predator promoted more rapid growth than those encountered rarely, suggesting that past evolutionary experience has influenced present food value (= growth potential) of prey. For some predators, the ranking of prey species changed with predator size; Chthamalus dalli and similar sized Balanus glandula promoted comparable growth in small Thais emarginata but Chthamalus dalli promoted much slower growth than similar sized Balanus glandula in larger Thais emarginata. Rank differences based on prey size in Balanusglandula became more pronounced and in some instances changed with increasing predator size; larger B. glandula promoted relatively faster growth for large snails than for small snails in all Thais species. Finally, growth rates were correlated with two important attributes of fitness in T. canaliculata and T. emarginata; in general, prey promoting more rapid growth also resulted in an earlier age of first reproduction for initially immature snails and higher rate of egg capsule production for mature individuals. Thus, these growth rates provide a basis from which to examine quantitatively patterns of prey selection from an energy- or growth-maximization perspective.These patterns of predator growth also permit inferences about the possible influence of predation on the evolution of prey morphology, life-history, and microhabitat distribution. Size refuges from Thais predation were confirmed for both Semibalanus cariosus and Mytilus californianus. Both Balanus glandula and Mytilus edulis, on the other hand, were vulnerable to predation by all sizes of Thais examined (> 10 mm) regardless of prey size; thus, neither of these species achieves a size refuge. In addition, on rocky shores, vertical distributions of the prey species reflect general preference patterns of their predators: higher value prey species, i.e. those with less well developed defensive morphologies (Balanus glandula, Mytilus edulis), generally occur higher on the shore. This pattern would be expected if preferred prey are consumed first lower on the shore where they are more available.  相似文献

Background

Nociception is the physiological detection of noxious stimuli. Because of its obvious importance, nociception is expected to be widespread across animal taxa and to trigger robust behaviours reliably. Nociception in invertebrates, such as crustaceans, is poorly studied.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Three decapod crustacean species were tested for nociceptive behaviour: Louisiana red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus), and grass shrimp (Palaemonetes sp.). Applying sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, or benzocaine to the antennae caused no change in behaviour in the three species compared to controls. Animals did not groom the stimulated antenna, and there was no difference in movement of treated individuals and controls. Extracellular recordings of antennal nerves in P. clarkii revealed continual spontaneous activity, but no neurons that were reliably excited by the application of concentrated sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid.

Conclusions/Significance

Previously reported responses to extreme pH are either not consistently evoked across species or were mischaracterized as nociception. There was no behavioural or physiological evidence that the antennae contained specialized nociceptors that responded to pH.  相似文献
