Seasonal morphs (spring and sumer forms) of Papilio xuthus L. are determined coincidentally with diapause and non-diapause in pupae by larval exposure to short days and long days respectively. The neuroendocrine principle underlying seasonal-morph determination was studied using surgical operations in P. xuthus. When recipient 0-day old or chilled diapause pupae were joined to donor 0-day old non-diapause pupae, the recipients developed into summer or intermediate morphs. When the same kinds of recipients used above were joined to 0-day old or chilled diapause pupae, there were no significant effects on the adult morph. In contrast, recipient non-diapause pupae all developed into summer morphs, regardless of groups of the type of donors.Furthermore, when the brain of 5th-instar larvae, pharate pupae or pupae, predetermined to be diapause, was transplanted into the abdomen of 0-day old, 30-day old or chilled diapause pupae, the recipients developed into summer or intermediate morphs. The results indicate that the brain of non-diapause pupae secretes a humoral factor producing the summer morph. In non-diapause pupae, the factor may be secreted at about the stage of larval-pupal ecdysis coincidentally with that of prothoracicotropic hormone.  相似文献

The haploid chromosome complement ofCharaxes jasius is n=25 in both males and females. The chromosomes in the mitotic metaphase are rod and dot-shaped; the primary constriction, even after treatment with hypotonic solution, is lacking in them. Meiosis in females is achiasmatic. Phylogeny of the Nymphalidae (Lepidoptera)   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
A generic-level phylogeny for the butterfly family Nymphalidae was produced by cladistic analysis of 234 characters from all life stages. The 95 species in the matrix (selected from the 213 studied) represent all important recognized lineages within this family. The analysis showed the taxa grouping into six main lineages. The basal branch is the Libytheinae, with the Danainae and Ithomiinae on the next branch. The remaining lineages are grouped into two main branches: the Heliconiinae-Nymphalinae, primarily flower-visitors (but including the fruit-attracted Coeini); and the Limenitidinae (sensu strictu), Biblidinae, and the satyroid lineage (Apaturinae, Charaxinae, Biinae, Calinaginae, Morphinae, Brassolinae, and Satyrinae), primarily fruit-attracted. Data partitions showed that the two data sets (immatures and adults) are very different, and a partitioned Bremer support analysis showed that the adult characters are the main source of conflict in the nodes of the combined analysis tree. This phylogeny includes the widest taxon coverage of any morphological study on Nymphalid butterflies to date, and supports the monophyly and relationships of most presently recognized subgroups, providing strong evidence for the presently accepted phylogenetic scheme.  相似文献

Precis coenia exhibits a seasonal color polyphenism. Animals reared under long-day conditions develop a pale tan pigmentation on their ventral hind wing (the linea form), whereas animals reared under short-day conditions develop a dark reddish-brown pigmentation (the rosa form). This developmental switch is mediated by a shift in the timing of ecdysteroid secretion at the outset of adult development. In addition, a single recessive gene mimics the effect of short-day conditions and, when homozygous, produces a constitutive rosa phenotype. This article analyzes the pigment composition of the ventral hind wing pattern of the linea and rosa forms. It presents a new thin layer chromatography system that separates ommochromes with high resolution. The linea pigmentation was found to be due to xanthommatin, while the rosa pigmentation is due to a mixture dihydro-xanthommatin and ommatin-D. Induction of the rosa form thus requires the synthesis of a new pigment (ommatin-D is a sulfate of dihydro-xanthommatin) and the stabilization of the reduced form of xanthommatin. Arch. In the seasonally diphenic butterfly Araschnia levana14C-labelled tryptophan and 3-hydroxykynurenine, the principal precursors of ommochromes, injected into young pupae caused a pattern specific radiolabel of mature red scales. [14C]glucose and [35S]methionine also labelled red scales but only when injected shortly before or during the time of pigment synthesis in the wing. In developing non-diapause pupae contents of 3-hydroxykynurenine increased until an abrupt decrease when pigments appeared in the wings. In diapausing pupae 3-hydroxykynurenine remained low but increased after injection of 20-hydroxyecdysone which induced pupal-adult development. Supply of wing scale cells with ommochrome precursors via the haemolymph was analysed after injection of [3H]tryptophan. In developing pupae haemolymph contents of [3H]tryptophan and [3H]3-hydroxykynurenine increased at the time of wing pigment formation and decreased shortly before adult emergence. In diapausing pupae haemolymph contents of [3H]tryptophan and [3H]3-hydroxykynurenine were low compared to non-diapause pupae but increased at the time of wing pigment formation after injection of 20-hydroxyecdysone. Isolated wings incubated in Grace's medium containing [14C]tryptophan and [14C]3-hydroxykynurenine incorporated radiolabel specifically into red portions of the wing colour pattern due to labelling of ommatin. Incorporation into red wing areas occurred specifically depending on different colour patterns of the spring- and the summer-morph.The results demonstrate that both tryptophan as well as 3-hydroxykynurenine are delivered via the haemolymph, and both can serve as precursors of ommatin formation in the scale cells. Therefore, the complete set of enzymes for the tryptophan-ommatin pathway is present in scale-forming cells.  相似文献

Due to their long‐distance migration routes and high longevity, monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are likely to benefit from learning how to discriminate and remember suitable feeding resources. In this study, we assessed monarchs’ abilities to track changing nectar sources over time and to retain learned information presented in two conditioning schedules. Non‐preferred (blue and red) and preferred (yellow) artificial flowers were concomitantly offered to monarchs in a three‐phase experiment. In each phase, flowers of only one color contained sucrose solution, while the others contained water. The rewarding color was changed in each phase. Instantaneous observations were made to assess butterfly visits to each color during each phase; continuous observations over the first 90 min of a new phase allowed us to look in more detail at the transition process. Overall, monarchs tracked sucrose availability, visiting the rewarding flowers more often than the unrewarding ones, regardless of innate preferences. However, butterflies reverted to innate color preferences when the newly rewarding color was different from the initial trained color. In a second experiment, memory decay was compared for butterflies trained according to two schedules: ‘single training’ (sucrose solution in red vs. water in blue artificial flowers in one 15‐min session per day) or ‘intermittent training’ (as above, but in two 7.5‐min sessions per day). Afterwards, butterflies were tested on alternate days for a week in arrays containing unrewarding models of both colors. Following either training schedule, memory persisted for at least 3 d after reinforcement ceased. Our findings reveal that monarchs are able to change their feeding responses according to the flowers’ reward status despite innate preferences, as well as to retain flower information for about half a week regardless of the conditioning dynamics.  相似文献

The skipping flight patterns of three species of Ypthima (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) were analyzed using high‐speed video recordings to clarify how wings move and how driving forces are produced. All three species showed a flight pattern that includes a pause that accounts for about 50% of a flap cycle when their wings completely close after each upstroke. The observed pause causes the “skipping” flight trajectory based on the clap–fling mechanism. Pause duration was correlated with upstroke wing motion, suggesting the contribution of the latter to a long pause duration. This is also supported by the temporal relationship between the wing and body motions. The aerodynamic power necessary for the pause flight was calculated for the three species.  相似文献

Diapause pupae of Papilio xuthus show color polymorphism, represented by diapause-green, orange, and brownish-orange types that are each associated with specific pupation sites. We investigated the role of the site of pupation on the induction of the development of orange types (or brownish-orange types), and the endocrine mechanism underlying the control of color polymorphism in short-day pupae. All short-day larvae of the wandering stage developed into orange or brownish-orange type pupae when they were placed in rough-surfaced containers after gut-purge. Utilizing a pharate pupal ligation between the thorax and abdomen, the endocrine mechanism underlying the control of color polymorphism was shown to involve a head-thorax factor (Orange-Pupa-Inducing Factor: OPIF) that induced orange types in short-day pupae. OPIF was bioassayed using the ligated abdomens of short-day pharate pupae. OPIF was extractable with 2% NaCl solution from 5th-instar larval ganglia complexes following the mesothoracic complex (TG(2,3)-AG(1-7)), but it could not be extracted with either acetone or 80% ethanol solution. OPIF may not exist in the brains of day-0 pupae or in brain-subesophageal ganglion and prothoracic ganglion complexes of 5th-instar larvae. The short-day pharate pupae responded to OPIF in a dose-dependent manner.  相似文献

Hypolimnas misippus, a sexually dimorphic, nymphalid butterfly with a very variable female, was sampled for 41 consecutive months, along with its supposed model, Danaus chrysippus (Danaidae), at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Hypolimnas larvae collected in the field were reared to compare their range of variation with that of the wild adult population. Some breeding data are presented. Although I show that the colour variations in Danaus and Hypolimnas are remarkably similar, the frequency rankings of the analogous forms within each species differ markedly in the long term. Moreover, 24% of Hypolimnas are transitional forms which are poor mimics. As the range of variation at Dar es Salaam is similar to that reported from Ghana, where the “model” is of quite different appearance, I conclude that mimetic resemblance is not of over-riding importance to its maintenance and perpetuation. The continuous variation in both fore- and hindwing coloration in the field is reflected in reared broods which fail to segregate into discontinuous phenotypes so that H, misippus is not truly polymorphic at Dar es Salaam. Females with transitional forewings have white on their hindwings more often than do the two extreme phenotypes, misippus and inaria. Transitional or white winged females are abundant only at times of high population density, whereas inaria larvae seem to have an advantage in crowded conditions. The extreme rarity of association between the inaria forewing and white hindwing suggests disruptive selection, the former being associated with the conditions of K selection and the latter with r selection. The calculation of selection coefficients supports this interpretation. Phenotypic diversity is greatest at high population density when the proportion of poor mimics is also maximal. At these times, apostatic selection may be important. At low density, diversity is minimal. Recent evidence concerning the efficiency of D. chrysippus as a model is discussed. The origin of colour variation in H. misippus probably owed much to mimicry but other selective forces such as apostatic selection or perhaps sexual selection are now of greater importance in maintaining it.  相似文献

Abstract As in most animals, male butterflies are generally the more proactive sex with respect to seeking out mating opportunities. In most cases, males conduct their search sometime between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, but a few species are active only before dawn or after sunset. These crepuscular species offer a good opportunity to study how males deal with markedly different visual and thermal conditions. Here, I present data from a 5-month behavioural study of male Melanitis leda (Nymphalidae) at a mate-encounter site in tropical Australia. Males of this species defended perching locations along a forest edge in a similar manner to other diurnally active territorial nymphalids. They generally arrived at these sites after sunset and arrived earlier on evenings that darkened earlier. Actively mate-locating males were only seen at the site during a 25−35 min evening period, during which ambient light levels ranged between 50 and 2600 lux. Only 27% of marked territory residents were recorded again at their location of capture, but fidelity in this 'resighted' group ranged up to 23 days. A sample of males, captured under ambient temperatures of 24.0−27.2°C, maintained a mean thoracic excess of 8.25 ± 0.73°C, but did not appear to 'shiver' in the manner of other crepuscular species. Males courted conspecific females and one mating was observed. This species is an excellent candidate for further research into the evolution of mating tactics in crepuscular butterflies.  相似文献

Cytogenetic analysis of an Idaho population of the checkerspot butterfly, Euphydryas colon, has revealed considerable inter- and intra-individual variation in chromosome number which turns out to be a classic case of B chromosome variation. The basic chromosome complement of the species is n (, )=31. The A chromosomes were aligned equatorially at mitotic metaphase and metaphase II, and axially at metaphase I, indicating a restriction of centric activity at the first meiotic division. No failure of pairing between homologous A chromosomes was observed and, although a marked asynchrony of chromatid separation was found to be characteristic of mitotic telophase and telophase II, the frequency of macrospermatid formation was low. The B chromosomes were at least partly heterochromatic but exhibited some variation in both pycnosity and size. Mitotically stable B-containing individuals showed a preponderance of unpaired Bs at first metaphase and these divided at either first or second anaphase. The presence of Bs was associated with a heightened production of abnormal spermatids particularly in individuals with high numbers of B chromosomes. Among the 25 individuals sampled, 21 carried from 1–6 B chromosomes, and of these 14 were mitotically stable. In all 7 unstable individuals the mean number of B chromosomes per cell exceeded the modal number. Assuming that the modal number represents the zygotic number, these results suggest that a mechanism to boost the number of B chromosomes exists in males of E. colon.  相似文献

Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet. However, economic and scientific investment in completing inventories of its biodiversity has been relatively poor in comparison with other Neotropical countries. Butterflies are the best studied group of invertebrates, with the highest proportion of known to expected species. More than 3,200 species of butterflies have been recorded in Colombia, although the study of the still many unexplored areas will presumably increase this number. This work provides a list of Ithomiini butterflies collected in the department of Antioquia and estimates the total number of species present, based on revision of entomological collections, records in the literature and field work performed between 2003 and 2011. The list includes 99 species and 32 genera, representing 27% of all Ithomiini species. We report 50 species of Ithomiini not formerly listed from Antioquia, and found the highest diversity of ithomiine species to be at middle elevations (900–1,800 m). The mean value of the Chao2 estimator for number of species in Antioquia is 115 species, which is close to a predicted total of 109 based on known distributions of other Ithomiini not yet recorded from the department. Nine species are potentially of particular conservation importance because of their restricted distributions, and we present range maps for each species. We also highlight areas in Antioquia with a lack of biodiversity knowledge to be targeted in future studies. This paper contributes to mapping the distribution of the Lepidoptera of Antioquia department in particular and of Colombia in general.  相似文献

Butterflies of the genus Heliconius are well known for their peculiar habits of utilizing pollen as a source of amino acids. Saliva plays a major role in the process of extracting amino acids and proteins from the pollen grains. In this investigation, we obtained samples of saliva from adult Heliconius melpomene by placing pumpkin pollen or fine glass-beads on the proboscis, which stimulates the butterflies to release saliva. Proteolytic activity was determined in the saliva by an insoluble protein-dye that turns blue when cleaved by proteases. Its extinction value was measured with a spectrophotometer at 595 nm. Both the saliva sampled with pollen and the saliva obtained from inert glass-beads exhibit proteolytic activity demonstrating that the saliva contains proteases. The proteolytic activity of the pollen/saliva samples was higher than that of the glass-bead/saliva samples, which we attribute to the stimulating effects of pollen, such as taste, smell, and texture, and not to proteases which might have been liberated from the pollen. This is indicated by the fact that pollen samples without saliva showed only a negligible indication for proteolytic activity. In general, females exhibit higher proteolytic activities than males, presumably due to their greater amino acid investment in reproduction. We present here first evidence for the existence of proteases in the saliva of a butterfly species and suggest that these enzymes are crucial for the use of amino acids and proteins from pollen in Heliconius butterflies.  相似文献

Microsatellite markers are suitable tools for studying dispersal pattern among local populations. I report on the characterization of seven polymorphic microsatellite loci in the scarce heath butterfly (Coenonympha hero), from one unenriched and one enriched genomic library. Number of alleles ranged from two to 20 when 108 individuals from seven populations were screened. HO ranged from 0.140 to 0.889. Primers were also tested on three other butterfly species. Amplification was successful for all loci in Erebia triaria, while only one gave products in Maculinea alcon and Maculinea rebeli. To my knowledge, these are the first microsatellite markers published in the Nymphalidae subfamily Satyrinae.  相似文献

The phylogenetically and morphologically diverse patterns of Charaxes can be reduced to a simple set of pattern elements which can be homologized throughout the genus. At least five types of correspondence (homologies) exist among pattern elements: those between (1) species, (2) forewing and hindwing, (3) dorsal and ventral wing surface, (4) serial wing-cells, and (5) individual pattern elements within a single wing-cell. Differences in Charaxes colour patterns result from the distortion, elaboration, enlargement, reduction or loss of individual pattern elements. Further variation is often the result of dislocation of pattern elements from their serial homologues in neighbouring wing-cells, and fusion of individual pattern elements to create larger areas of colour. The type of analysis presented in this paper should be broadly applicable within the Lepidoptera and may prove useful in studying the systematics of colour patterns and the evolution of the developmental system that gives rise to them.  相似文献

The colour patterns of Heliconius butterflies are composed from a relatively simple set of pattern elements whose homologues are recognizable throughout the genus. Although Heliconius colour patterns look quite different from those of most nymphalids, these pattern elements are seen to derive from the generalized nymphalid groundplan. The differences arise primarily from the loss or positional shift of certain pattern elements, a high degree of fusion between individual pattern elements, and, in the forewing, asymmetries of the pattern elements relative to the wing-cell midline. The scheme of homologies we present is consistent with what is currently known about the comparative morphology and developmental physiology of colour pattern formation in Lepidoptera, and provides a framework for the interpretation of developmental, evolutionary and genetic studies in Heliconius.  相似文献
