The operation is described of a special psychogeriatric ward of 23 beds set up in 1967 to provide treatment for mentally disturbed elderly patients who could not be kept in a general ward or at home. The unit is in a predominantly geriatric hospital which serves a population of 340,000 and in the four and a half years reviewed 600 patients were admitted. Half of the admissions were emergencies. A consultant geriatrician was in charge and the nursing staff were general trained. The number of beds was found to be adequate for the demand. Few patients had to be transferred to a psychiatric hospital, but, since the mental disturbance was often associated with severe illness and the patients were old, the death rate was high. The nursing staff have found the work interesting and stimulating.  相似文献

To study whether mounting an immune response is energetically costly, mice from two lines divergently selected for high (H-BMR) and low (L-BMR) basal metabolic rate (BMR) were immunized with sheep red blood cells. Their energy budgets were then additionally burdened by sudden transfer from an ambient temperature of 23 degrees C to 5 degrees C. We found that the immune response of H-BMR mice was lower than that of L-BMR mice. However, the interaction between line affiliation and ambient temperature was not significant and cold exposure did not result in immunosuppression in either line. At 23 degrees C the animals of both lines seemed to cover the costs of immune response by increasing food consumption and digestive efficiency. This was not observed at 5 degrees C, so these costs must have been covered at the expense of other components of the energy budget. Cold exposure itself elicited a considerable increase in food intake and the mass of internal organs, which were also heavier in H-BMR than in L-BMR mice. However, irrespective of the temperature or line affiliation, immunized mice had smaller intestines, while cold-exposed immunized mice had smaller hearts. Furthermore, the observed larger mass of the liver and kidneys in immunized mice of both lines kept at 23 degrees C was not observed at 5 degrees C. Hence, immunization compromised upregulation of the function of metabolically active internal organs, essential for meeting the energetic demands of cold. We conclude that the difficulties with a straightforward demonstration of the energetic costs of immune responses in these animals stem from the extreme flexibility of their energy budgets.  相似文献

Strains of Drosophila melanogaster homozygous for either the AdhF or the AdhS allele were kept on food supplemented with ethanol for 20 generations. These strains (FE and SE) were tested for tolerance to ethanol and compared with control strains (FN and SN). The E strains showed increased tolerance to ethanol both in the adult and in the juvenile life stages. In adults the increase in tolerance was not accompanied by an increase in overall ADH activity. However, there were changes in the distribution of ADH over the body parts. Flies of the FE strain possessed significantly more ADH in the abdomen, compared with FN. Another set of FN and SN populations were started both on standard food and on ethanol food with reduced yeast concentrations. After 9 months ADH activities were determined in flies from these populations which had been placed on three different media: the food the populations had been kept on, regular food and regular food supplemented with ethanol. The phenotypic effects of yeast reduction on ADH activity were considerably, but longterm genetic effects were limited.  相似文献

Female mice from the strains selected for large and small brain weight (LB, SB) were kept either in "enriched" or in standard laboratory environment for 3 months. At the end of this period they were tested in the open field and for the ability to extrapolate the direction of the food stimulus movement. Scores of the LB mice kept in the "enriched" environment were significantly higher in the extrapolation test as compared to the LB mice kept in the standard environment as well as to the SB mice of both groups.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The toxicity to the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex (L.) of soft water (pH6.0) with three concentrations of XAD-extracted aquatic humus was treated in the laboratory.
2. Exposure to pH6.0 water without humus added resulted in 92% mortality after 3 weeks. Humus, added at concentrations of 7 and 20 g Cm 3, decreased the mortality to 80% and 64% in the same period.
3. Surviving animals kept at pH6.0 had a lower growth rate, lower food conversion efficiency and higher body water content than animals kept at pH 7.3.
4. Humus had no significant effects on growth, food conversion or body composition of G. pulex kept at pH 6.0. However, there was a tendency for growth and food conversion to increase, and for body water content to decrease with increased humus concentration. The effects of humus on growth and food conversion of G. pulex observed in this study do not support the contention that humus acts as a free coupler to lower metabolic efficiency. On the contrary, humus tended to benefit food conversion.
5. It is suggested that low concentrations of humus can be directly beneficial to organisms in acidified water in ways other than by complexing toxic metals.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that social interactions (e.g., the actions and reactions elicited by the interaction of co-specific individuals) induce individual fruit flies (Tephritidae) to ingest more food, especially protein-rich food. Changes in feeding behavior related to social interactions have been associated with reproduction (e.g., when different sexes are present), reproductive facilitation (e.g., when two females interact) and stress and aggression (e.g., flies of the same sex, or crowdedness). The present study investigated the effect of social interaction on the feeding, longevity and resource management of the Ethiopian fruit fly, Dacus ciliatus. Single flies and pairs of flies (of the same or different sexes) were confined to a small arena (the PUB system), in which we measured the amount of liquid food ingested daily by each fly. In addition, we sampled flies of different ages, extracted and quantified their lipid and protein contents, and related individual metabolic contents to the ingestion of a fructose and protein hydrolysate solution. Results showed that individual ingestion was significantly higher in flies maintained in pairs than in flies kept as solitary individuals. The highest intake rates were observed for the female–female pairs. In general, females ingested significantly greater volumes than males. Lipid contents tended to decrease progressively with age in flies kept as solitary individuals, especially in female flies, while lipid levels decreased and then increased in flies maintained in pairs. Protein trends were similar, although less pronounced than the patterns observed for the lipids. The flies kept as solitary individuals lived significantly longer than those kept in pairs. A resource-management analysis points to a decreased metabolic rate in flies kept as solitary individuals, as compared to paired flies. Results are discussed in view of theories of resource management and survival strategies.  相似文献

Early instar nymphs of the mayfly, Cloeon sp. were kept on an algal or a detrital diet at 20 ± 1 °C in the laboratory. A control group was not given any food. Nymphs kept on algae showed significantly (P = 0.001) higher growth both in terms of length and biomass than for those kept on detritus. None of the nymphs given algae or detritus died during the experiment, and 40 per cent of those fed algae and 20 per cent fed detritus reached maturity by the termination of the experiment. Food retention time as well as gill ventilation rate of nymphs feeding on algae were significantly (P = 0.001) higher than those feeding on detritus. It is probable that these two factors largely enabled the nymphs to survive as well as to grow and reach maturity, though relatively slowly, solely on a detrital diet. However, algae was clearly shown to be a superior food resource for Cloeon sp. nymphs.  相似文献

Daily schedules of many organisms, including birds, are thought to affect fitness. Timing in birds is based on circadian clocks that have a heritable period length, but fitness consequences for individuals in natural environments depend on the scheduling of entrained clocks. This chronotype, i.e., timing of an individual relative to a zeitgeber, results from interactions between the endogenous circadian clock and environmental factors, including light conditions and ambient temperature. To understand contributions of these factors to timing, we studied daily activity patterns of a captive songbird, the great tit (Parus major), under different temperature and light conditions. Birds were kept in a light (L)-dark (D) cycle (12.5?L:11.5 D) at either 8°C or 18°C with ad libitum access to food and water. We assessed chronotype and subsequently tested birds at the same temperature under constant dim light (LL(dim)) to determine period length of their circadian clock. Thermal conditions were then reversed so that period length was measured under both temperatures. We found that under constant dim light conditions individuals lengthened their free-running period at higher temperatures by 5.7?±?2.1?min (p?=?.002). Under LD, birds kept at 18°C started activity later and terminated it much earlier in the day than those kept under 8°C. Overall, chronotype was slightly earlier under higher temperature, and duration of activity was shorter. Furthermore, individuals timed their activities consistently on different days under LD and over the two test series under LL(dim) (repeatability from .38 to .60). Surprisingly, period length and chronotype did not show the correlation that had been previously found in other avian species. The influence of daylength on body mass and food intake of pregnant and lactating voles was tested by comparing animals housed in long versus short daylengths. Pregnancy rates were approximately 50% in long-day females and in voles kept in short days beginning 2 weeks before mating, but were significantly lower in voles preadapted to short days for 8 weeks before mating. Body mass and food intake increased substantially during pregnancy and lactation and the magnitude of the increase was unaffected by daylength; by contrast, body weight was significantly reduced in non-impregnated voles kept in short as compared to long days. The suppressive effects of short photoperiods on body weight were completely counteracted during pregnancy and lactation. Voles that breed during the short days of winter face extreme energetic challenges but the advantages of early breeding appear to justify the costs.  相似文献

In a previous survey, carried out in 100 dogs in Rome by Tassi and Widenhorn (1977), two animals, which always lived in the urban area, were found infected by Echinococcus granulosus. An urban infection was therefore hypothized. During a following experiment 6 three-month old Beagle dogs were fed for nine months with raw meat sold in the butcheries of Rome as "food for pets". Two dogs of the same breed and origin were fed for the same period with canned food and were kept as control animals. At the end of the experiment three of the six dogs were found infected by E. granulosus, while the renmant three and the two controls resulted negative. An additional similar trial was carried out in Bologna. Three dogs were fed for seven months with the same kind of raw meat sold in three butcheries of Bologna, and a fourth dog was kept as control. At the end of the seven months also one of the three dogs was found infected by E. granulosus. These results seem to confirm the hypothesis of an urban infection by E. granulosus in dogs. Various possibilities of contamination of raw meat sold in butcheries as food for animals are discussed.  相似文献

Four food types held hot at 45 to 60 degrees C were deliberately contaminated with O1 and non-O1 Vibrio cholerae strains. These organisms were assayed for survival and recovery from the foods within 1 h of the time the food was kept hot. The results showed no growth of V. cholerae non-O1 on thiosulfate-citrate bile-sucrose agar plates after 24 h of incubation at 37 degrees C for food held hot at 50 to 60 degrees C. Growth was low for V. cholerae O1 and was not achieved in some instances in which foods were held at either 55 or 60 degrees C after 40 or 60 min of from the time the food was kept hot. Both organisms, however, were recovered equally from all food types held at all temperatures after 48 h of incubation. When incubated for an additional 24 h, the organisms grew to unusually small-sized colonies, measuring 0.1 to 0.3 mm in diameter, on the same agar plates that were negative for growth after an initial 24 h of incubation. It was concluded that V. cholerae survived the period of time held at hot temperatures. Although the organisms were not recovered from some foods when held at some of the temperatures and times after 24 h of incubation, they remained viable. An incubation period of 48 h at 37 degrees C was found to be appropriate for the recovery of V. cholerae from hot foods.  相似文献

The relative force of direct and indirect selection underlying the evolution of polyandry is contentious. When females acquire direct benefits during mating, indirect benefits are often considered negligible. Although direct benefits are likely to play a prominent role in the evolution of polyandry, post‐mating selection for indirect benefits may subsequently evolve. We examined whether polyandrous females acquire indirect benefits and quantified direct and indirect effects of multiple mating on female fitness in a nuptial gift‐giving spider (Pisaura mirabilis). In this system, the food item donated by males during mating predicts direct benefits of polyandry. We compared fecundity, fertility and survival of singly mated females to that of females mated three times with the same (monogamy) or different (polyandry) males in a two‐factorial design where females were kept under high and low feeding conditions. Greater access to nutrients and sperm had surprisingly little positive effect on fitness, apart from shortening the time until oviposition. In contrast, polyandry increased female reproductive success by increasing the probability of oviposition, and egg hatching success indicating that indirect benefits arise from mating with several different mating partners rather than resources transferred by males. The evolution of polyandry in a male‐resource‐based mating system may result from exploitation of the female foraging motivation and that indirect genetic benefits are subsequently derived resulting from co‐evolutionary post‐mating processes to gain a reproductive advantage or to counter costs of mating. Importantly, indirect benefits may represent an additional explanation for the maintenance of polyandry.  相似文献

Growing animals are often able to offset the effects of periods of reduced food availability by subsequently undergoing a phase of elevated compensatory or 'catch-up' growth. This indicates that growth rates are not normally maximized even when food is not limiting, suggesting that fast growth may be costly. Here, we show experimental evidence of a long-term deferred cost of compensatory growth after a period of food shortage. Juvenile salmon subjected to a short-lived low-food regime in autumn subsequently entered a hyperphagic phase, leading to complete restoration of lipid reserves and partial recovery of lost skeletal growth relative to controls. However, several months later they entered a prolonged phase of poorer performance (despite food now being freely available), so that by the following spring they were substantially smaller than controls and had lower lipid reserves for their body size. The incidence of sexual maturation in males the following breeding season was also reduced. Salmon thus appear to trade off the benefits of short-term restoration of fat stores prior to winter against long-term performance.  相似文献

Rats were reared in three different kinds of post-weaning environment: (1) with litter-mates and a variety of playthings (objects/social), (2) without either litter-mates or playthings (no-objects/isolates), (3) with litter-mates, but without playthings (no-objects/social). The animals were subsequently tested on a variety of learning tasks. In one task, the rats had to remove an obstacle from an alley in order to enter a food compartment; subsequently they were required to remove the obstacle in a different way from the one they had learned. Another task was to open a door leading to a food compartment; when the rats and learned this, the floor of the apparatus was lowered so they had to reach the door by climbing a ladder. Object-deprived/isolates were slower than the objects/social group in the transfer phase of the above tasks, though not in original acquisition. Object-deprived/social animals were not inferior to an objects/social group. Isolates had a higher free feeding weight than social animals, were more active in an open field, and ran faster for food reward when deprived.  相似文献

Norris and USDA-103 strains of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were compared for growth rate and food conversion ratio under satiation feeding and restricted feeding (1% body weight day−1) regimes. At the start of the experiment Norris fish weighed 2·8 g, USDA-103 fish weighed 14·0 g. Therefore, a regression of the loge of specific growth rate against the loge of mean body size with an empirically derived fixed slope of -0·37 was used to compare growth rates. Under both feeding regimes the USDA-103 strain had faster specific growth rates and more efficient food conversion. In subsequent studies, voluntary food intake of size matched fish (60 g average) from these two strains was compared using a radiographic method. Fish were acclimatized to tank conditions for 3 weeks prior to voluntary food intake measurement. Half of the groups were deprived of food for 2 days prior to food intake measurement, while the remaining groups were fed 1% body weight day−1. The USDA-103 strain fish ate significantly more food and grew faster than the Norris strain fish. Previously fasted Norris fish subsequently ate more than their fed counterparts, whereas the fed USDA-103 fish consumed more food than the fasted USDA-103 group. When the USDA-103 strain fish were deprived of food for 4 , 2 or 0 days, all groups subsequently consumed between 4·5 and 5·0% of body weight in one meal. The USDA-103 fish, unlike the Norris fish were not stimulated to consume more after short-duration fasting. Taken together, these results suggest that there are genetic differences in growth, food conversion ratio and regulation of food intake between Norris and USDA-103 strains.  相似文献

The filter-feeding clam Corbicula fluminea has widely spread from its Asiatic origin into freshwater habitats on several continents, where it often has a considerable impact on ecosystem processes. The present study was stimulated by the observation that C. fluminea can experience mass mortality during warm summers, even when temperatures are still far below the lethal level. We hypothesized that starvation due to low food quantities during summer is a main factor in this context. In order to test nutritional conditions in an environment where summer mortality occurred, the clams’ body mass was tracked in river bypass systems installed at the Lower River Rhine (Germany and The Netherlands). Two food levels were adjusted in the bypass channels: one corresponding to the original chlorophyll level in the river (ambient food) and one with a chlorophyll a level reduced by about 50% (low food). The clams kept at the ambient food level increased their shell length during summer, although growth rates decreased at low food levels in the River Rhine in late summer. In contrast to shell length, body mass decrease in late summer cumulated in 94% reduction from August until October. This trend was enhanced by the experimental food reduction, i.e., clams kept in the low food level treatments weighed 60% less than the clams in the ambient food treatment at the end of summer. However, mortality was low in both treatments. The data demonstrate a high plasticity in the body mass of C. fluminea. The corresponding possibility to respire body mass can be seen as one strategy to survive longer starvation periods.  相似文献

Cannibalism, which is rather common in ladybirds, has been usually studied at the individual level: benefits of cannibalism for cannibals were estimated. Our study was conducted at the group level: we evaluated the overall effect of interlarval cannibalism on a group of Harmonia axyridis larvae of the fourth instar deprived of food, including both cannibals and their victims. Experiments showed that the probability of pupation in larvae which were kept individually was significantly higher than in larvae kept in groups of five, other conditions being the same. The proportion of samples in which at least one of five individuals pupated among the larvae kept individually was also higher than among those kept in groups suggesting that the eventual benefit of cannibalism was outweighed by the negative impact of aggressive interlarval interactions. The mean and minimum survival time in samples where none of five larvae pupated were longer when larvae were kept individually than when larvae were kept in groups. However, the maximum survival time (the survival time of the last larva in a sample) increased when larvae were kept in groups, which was the only one benefit of cannibalism found in our study. Under natural conditions, the possible adaptive value of this effect is that in the absence of natural prey, longer larval survival time proportionally increases the possibility of finding a new prey patch thereby ensuring survival of the population.  相似文献
