Freshwater and wetland plant communities of Loch Lomond   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Information on the aquatic and wetland vegetation of Loch Lomond, Scotland, is summarised for the period 1957–90. Aquatic macrophyte growth is estimated to occupy about 1% of the loch's total surface area, being limited to the 0–10 m euphotic zone, and probably excluded from much of this area by wave disturbance and unsuitable substrates. Aquatic vegetation is however abundant in sheltered bays and less-exposed shorelines, particularly in the South Basin of the loch. Although Littorella uniflora (L.) Aschers is the commonest, ubiquitous, submerged plant of the loch, three separate euhydrophyte communities have been identified within the loch. One of these is characterised by abundant stands of Elodea canadensis Michx., which appears to have invaded Loch Lomond some time between 1967–88, and has rapidly spread throughout the loch.  相似文献

The physico-Chemical limnology of Loch Lomond   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0

Loch Lomond, the largest freshwater lake in Britain, is physically divided into a number of distinct basins by geological structures. The northern part of the loch is long, narrow and deep whilst the southern area is broad and shallow with many islands scattered throughout it.The water chemistry of the loch is dictated by the geology of catchment and the quality of the rivers flowing into it. The two major rivers, the Falloch and the Endrick Water, are both of good quality with low nutrient content. Consequently, the loch is regarded as oligotrophic, though the southern area verges towards being mesotrophic.  相似文献

Loch Lomond is the second largest body of freshwater in Great Britain. It is a long, narrow lake (36.4 km long, 8.8 km wide). The northern basin is fjord-like and surrounded by a mountainous, base-poor, rocky catchment. In contrast, the southern basin is much broader and shallower with a mainly lowland, calcareous, agricultural catchment. This causes a trophic gradient along the length of the loch that runs from the oligotrophic northern basin to the more mesotrophic southern basin. Rotifer samples were collected at monthly intervals between May and October 2002 at three locations along the length of the loch. More than 12 species were found, the commonest of which were Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Trichocerca stylata (Gosse). Although the species composition of the rotifer community varied very little among the sites, rotifer abundance increased markedly from north to south, apparently reflecting the trophic gradient along the length of the loch. The results suggest that rotifer abundance may be a more sensitive indicator of trophic state, and changes in trophic state, than species composition.  相似文献

Zooplankton in Loch Lomond: perspectives, predation and powan   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
P. P. Pomeroy 《Hydrobiologia》1994,290(1-3):75-90
Published and unpublished accounts of the zooplankton community of Loch Lomond are reviewed. Loch Lomond's zooplankton community is unique amongst those of Scotland's other large lochs. Holopedium gibberum appeared in Loch Lomond in the years between the studies of Slack & Hamilton in the 1950s and zooplankton surveys in the late 1970s.The annual cycles of Eudiaptomus gracilis, Cyclops strenuus abyssorum and Mesocyclops leuckarti are described for the mid basin of Loch Lomond. E. gracilis overwinter mainly as adult with variable egg production during their lifespan of 5–8 months. The cyclopoid copepods have variable life history characteristics. C. str. abyssorum produce a single generation per year, overwinter by means of resting eggs and a small population of planktonic adults, while M. leuckarti is present in the plankton throughout the year, but in low numbers during winter.Zooplankton populations in Loch Lomond are predated by the diverse fish community which includes a facultative planktivore in the powan, Coregonus lavaretus. Powan feed heavily on zooplankton from late spring until late autumn. Powan display selectivity in the prey species taken, in the size distribution and morph types taken within prey species. Zooplankton species, morphs and forms in Loch Lomond tend to reflect this predation.Zoology Department, University of St. AndrewsZoology Department, University of St. Andrews  相似文献

  • 1 The underwater light climate in Loch Ness is described in terms of mixing depth (Zm) and depth of the euphoric zone (Zeu). During periods of complete mixing, Zm equates with the mean depth of the loch (132 m), but even during summer stratification the morphometry of the loch and the strong prevailing winds produce a deep thermocline and an epilimnetic mixed layer of about 30 m or greater. Hence, throughout the year the quotient Zm/Zeu is exceptionally high and the underwater light climate particularly unfavourable for phytoplankton production and growth.
  • 2 Phytoplankton biomass expressed as chlorophyll a is very low in Loch Ness, with a late summer maximum of less than 1.5 mg chlorophyll a m-3 in the upper 30 m of the water column. This low biomass and the resulting very low photosynthetic carbon fixation within the water column are evidence that a severe restraint is imposed on the rate at which phytoplankton can grow in the loch.
  • 3 The chlorophyll a content per unit of phytoplankton biovolume and the maximum, light-saturated specific rate of photosynthesis are both parameters which might be influenced by the light climate under which the phytoplankton have grown. However, values obtained from Loch Ness for both chlorophyll a content (mean 0.0045 mg mm-3) and maximum photosynthetic rate (1–4 mg C mg Chla-1 h-1) are within the range reported from other lakes.
  • 4 Laboratory bioassays with the natural phytoplankton community from Loch Ness on two occasions in late summer when the light climate in the loch is at its most favourable, suggest that even then limitation of phytoplankton growth is finely balanced between light and phosphorus limitation. Hence, for most of the year, when the light climate is less favourable, phytoplankton growth will be light limited.
  • 5 Quotients relating mean annual algal biomass as chlorophyll a (c. 0.5 mg Chla m-3) and the probable annual specific areal loading of total phosphorus (0.4–1.7 g TP m-2 yr-1) suggest that the efficiency with which phytoplankton is produced in Loch Ness per unit of TP loading is extremely low when compared with values from other Scottish lochs for which such an index has been calculated. This apparent inefficiency can be attributed to suppression of photosynthetic productivity in the water column due to the unfavourable underwater light climate.
  • 6 These several independent sources of evidence lead to the conclusion that phytoplankton development in Loch Ness is constrained by light rather than by nutrients. Loch Ness thus appears to provide an exception to the generally accepted paradigm that phytoplankton development in lakes of an oligotrophic character is constrained by nutrient availability.

Differences in stable‐isotope values, morphology and ecology in whitefish Coregonus lavaretus were investigated between the three basins of Loch Lomond. The results are discussed with reference to a genetic investigation to elucidate any substructuring or spawning site fidelity. Foraging fidelity between basins of Loch Lomond was indicated by δ13C and δ15N values of C. lavaretus muscle tissue. There was, however, no evidence of the existence of sympatric morphs in the C. lavaretus population. A previous report of two C. lavaretus‘species’ in Loch Lomond probably reflects natural variation between individuals within a single mixed population.  相似文献

The distribution of several surface properties, both physical and chemical, of three Scottish sea lochs were studied during the spring phytoplankton bloom.Concentrations of nitrate, phosphate, and silicate have been determined and related to fluctuations in the freshwater input and uptake by the phytoplankton population. The ratios nitrate: phosphate and silicate: phosphate (on atom bases) in Loch Creran and Loch Linnhe were similar, but there were certain marked differences from those in Loch Etive.Nitrate, rather than phosphate, was a critical factor in the productivity of Loch Creran and Loch Linnhe. In Loch Etive the limitation of these nutrients was directly affected by the amount of fresh-water entering into the Loch.Patchiness of chlorophyll a and phaeopigments in Loch Creran and Loch Etive reflected those factors (e.g., freshwater/sea-water inflow, turbulence produced by the loch topography etc.) which affect the surface circulation in the two lochs. The delay in the development of the phytoplankton bloom in Loch Linnhe may be attributed to a poor stability of the surface layers due to low run-off.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The pattern of fluctuations in the total biomass and species composition of phytoplankton in the shallow, eutrophic Loch Leven exhibits considerable inter-annual and within-year variability. Nevertheless, studies over the 18-year period reviewed here (1968–85) show that many of the observed changes can be explained in -terms of light regimes and the concentrations and fluxes of nutrients. On occasion, the incidence of fungal parasitism and of protozoan, rotiferan and crustacean grazing is also important. 2. Changes in annual mean algal biomass from very high levels in the late 1960s and early 1970s to somewhat lower levels in the late 1970s, followed by occasional high peaks in the present decade, are attributed to shifts in phosphorus loading-particularly from a P-rich industrial source. 3. In spite of complex and erratic sequences of algal species, seasonal patterns in the size distribution of the phytoplankton assemblage have been identified. However, these also changed. During the 4 years prior to 1971, Daphnia hyalina was not recorded in the plankton, and small algae have been abundant only in late winter or early spring. 4. The potential importance of the weather is highlighted as one of the possible causes of the irregular appearance of algal species. The effect of the characteristically variable, oceanicclimate of Northern Britain on this large (13.3 km2), shallow (z?= 3.9 m) loch is thought to be of particular importance. 5. The influence of the weather on phytoplankton sequences is explored by comparing records of monthly flushing rate values with time-series data on aspects of the aquatic environment and plankton populations. The preliminary assessment suggests that variation in flushing rate ( p ) has a considerable effect on temperature regimes and the supplies and in-loch dynamics of nutrients; through such changes, p controls major features of phytoplankton succession such as the temporal abundance of diatoms, as well as detailed sequences of events relating to the development and collapse of particular algal species - and. as a consequence, in some cases, of the animals preying on them. 6. Concluding remarks emphasize how little would have been understood about the functioning of shallow lakes, had the long-term commitment to Loch Leven research been abandoned. The view is also expressed that the findings are of considerably greater relevance to research on ‘classic’ stratifying lake systems, than the focus on the shallow waterbody might hitherto have suggested.  相似文献

Phytoplankton ecology of Loch Ard,Scotland   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The results of the ecological investigation discussed in this paper represent the first seasonal study of the phytoplankton to be carried out in Loch Ard. This body of water is a typical warm monomictic lake, with water temperatures during the period of study ranging from 18.6 to 4.4 °C and oxygen saturation from 68 to 112%. Stratification lasted from May to November. Phosphate was generally very low, being almost undetectable for about six months and not exceeding 0.125 µg.at.P 1–1 even at the winter maximum. Dissolved silica showed a regular seasonal pattern ranging from 9 to 21 µg.at.Si 1–1. Nitrate, like silicate, never showed signs of complete exhaustion, with a minimum of 4.0 and a maximum of 21.0 µg.at.N 1–1. The pH remained on the acid side of neutrality while the alkalinity never exceeded 7 mg CaCO3/1.From an examination of net phytoplankton Loch Ard could be described as diatom-desmid in nature. Quantitatively the population was dominated by diatoms(Cyclotella, Asterionella andMelosira) till May whence a mixed population of blue-green algae, desmids and dinoflagellates persisted till late September.  相似文献

Studies on Gull Lake, Michigan   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The seasonal and depth distribution of phytoplankton in Gull Lake, a moderately large, temperate, dimictic, recreational lake in southern Michigan, U.S.A., is described and discussed. Diatoms (Fragilaria crotonensis, Cyclotella michiganiana, Asterionella formosa, and Synechococcus) grow mainly in summer. Diatoms grew under the winter ice, and objections are lodged to the classic explanation of seasonal growth in temperate lakes, and to a recent hypothesis concerning the `paradox of the plankton'. Two raphe-bearing large diatom species were considered to be truly planktonic. A Synechococcus species was similar to that described previously only from Loch Leven.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in phytoplankton community structure within a large flood-control reservoir (Sardis Reservoir, MS, USA) was investigated in relation to variation in physicochemical properties, location within the reservoir, hydraulic residence time (HRT), nutrient concentrations, temperature, and light conditions over a 14-month period. During periods of short HRT, phytoplankton communities throughout the reservoir were homogeneous in biomass, composition, and production. With a gradual increase in HRT from spring to summer, spatially heterogeneous phytoplankton communities developed along the longitudinal axis of the reservoir. During this period of longer HRT, diatoms and chlorophytes were a larger proportion of total phytoplankton biomass at shallow and more turbid locations near the head of the reservoir, whereas cyanobacteria were a larger proportion of the community at deeper and less turbid locations closer to the outflow. Seasonal succession of the phytoplankton community was represented by high abundance of diatoms in spring, increasing biomass of cyanobacteria through summer, and a secondary bloom of diatoms in fall. Species of Cyclotella, Asterionella, Nitzschia, and Ankistrodesmus were among the first colonizers in the early growing season, closely followed by Aulacoseira, whereas species of Staurastrum and Tetraedron appeared later in the spring. Species of Synedra, Crucigenia, Selenastrum, Scenedesmus, and Merismopedia occurred throughout the sampling period. As the diatoms started to decrease during mid-spring, cryptophytes increased, prior to dominance of species of Pseudanabaena in summer. Reservoir management of HRT, in combination with spatial variation in reservoir morphology and seasonal variation in temperature and riverine nutrient inputs, creates seasonally variable yet distinct spatial patterns in phytoplankton community biomass, composition, and production. The concentration of the suspended matter in Loch Etive varies with river discharge, biological production, and water movement. The contribution from phytoplankton production shows a seasonal trend, with the highest values in the spring and the lowest in winter. The carbon: chlorophyll a and nitrogen: chlorophyll a ratios in the photic zone (1,4–5, and 10 m) during the period of high production ranged from 54.0 to 400.0 and 6.0 to 38.0, respectively, the autumn bloom having higher ratios than the spring bloom. The increase of these ratios in the landward direction indicates the influence of terrestrial material. The C/N ratios in the surface (1 m) of the loch throughout the year fluctuated between 6.5–20.0, being the highest in winter. The C/N ratios in the bottom layers of the Lower Basin (40–50 m), Deep Basin (115–140 m) and the Head of the Loch (25–35 m) during the year ranged between 2.25–14.0, 5.0–38.0, and 3.0–28.5, respectively. The lowest ratios were mainly found in early autumn and associated with high levels of dissolved organic nitrogen and amonium. The accumulation of suspended matter in the deeper layers of the Deep Basin was caused by the input of organic detritus from the Lower Basin and eroded sediment from the basin slope. The lateral distribution of the C/N ratios may be related to the hydrographical features of the loch.  相似文献

Diurnal variation of phytoplankton in Loch Lomond   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
A study of diurnal variation over a 48 hour period was undertaken in July 1973 to ascertain the extent and timing of some major chemical, physical and biological variables in Loch Lomond. The phytoplankton population was dominated by the diatom Tabellaria fenestrata, with a maximum abundance between 04.00 and 06.00 h in surface waters on both days. A distinct diurnal variation in cell numbers was also recorded. Chlorophyll a values also showed a regular pattern of variation with a single peak between 10.00 and 14.00 h each day. Some chemical changes appeared to be a direct consequence of phytoplankton multiplication. Nitrate-nitrogen showed a decrease in concentration coinciding with the period of cell multiplication, whereas dissolved silica concentrations only fell on the completion of this process. Other common diatoms displayed less distinct patterns of variation although Fragilaria crotonensis attained its maximum abundance in surface waters. Considerable variation was recorded in the number of organisms and chlorophyll a levels at 25 cm intervals in the upper metre of the water column, with large variations in standing-crop and chemical parameters in the space of one hour. Diurnal oscillations in the position of the thermocline were recorded, with the thermal discontinuity being at its greatest depth in the early hours of the morning. The hypolimnion and thermocline regions clearly acted as a source of nutrient supply to the epilimnion. From this investigation it is apparent that for the proper understanding of diurnal variation a 24 hour study alone is insufficient and may give rise to misleading results.Department of Botany, University of GlasgowDepartment of Botany, University of Glasgow  相似文献

Stomach contents of powan caught throughout the year from Loch Lomond and Loch Eck were examined. Adult powan in Loch Lomond fed mainly on planktonic Cladocera, switching to benthic food during December-April. Bosmina coregoni was the principal planktonic food with Daphnia hyalina an important late summer and autumn prey. Loch Eck powan fed throughout the year on chironomid larvae and Pisidium spp. from the benthos and ingested large amounts of non-food material. Mean dry weights of food in stomachs were correlated with water temperature in Loch Lomond but not in Loch Eck and were higher in powan from Loch Eck over most of the year.  相似文献

Anthropogenic acidification in SW-Scotland, from the early 19th Century onwards, led to the extinction of several loch (lake) brown trout (Salmo trutta) populations and substantial reductions in numbers in many others. Higher altitude populations with no stocking influence, which are isolated above natural and artificial barriers and subjected to the greatest effect of acidification, exhibited the least intrapopulation genetic diversity (34% of the allelic richness of the populations accessible to anadromous S. trutta). These, however, were characterised by the greatest interpopulation divergence (highest pairwise DEST 0.61 and FST 0.53 in contemporary samples) based on 16 microsatellite loci and are among the most differentiated S. trutta populations in NW-Europe. Five lochs above impassable waterfalls, where S. trutta were thought to be extinct, are documented as having been stocked in the late 1980s or 1990s. All five lochs now support self-sustaining S. trutta populations; three as a direct result of restoration stocking and two adjoining lochs largely arising from a small remnant wild population in one, but with some stocking input. The genetically unique Loch Grannoch S. trutta, which has been shown to have a heritable increased tolerance to acid conditions, was successfully used as a donor stock to restore populations in two acidic lochs. Loch Fleet S. trutta, which were re-established from four separate donor sources in the late 1980s, showed differential contribution from these ancestors and a higher genetic diversity than all 17 natural loch populations examined in the area. Genetically distinct inlet and outlet spawning S. trutta populations were found in this loch. Three genetically distinct sympatric populations of S. trutta were identified in Loch Grannoch, most likely representing recruitment from the three main spawning rivers. A distinct genetic signature of Loch Leven S. trutta, the progenitor of many Scottish farm strains, facilitated detection of stocking with these strains. One artificially created loch was shown to have a population genetically very similar to Loch Leven S. trutta. In spite of recorded historical supplemental stocking with Loch Leven derived farm strains, much of the indigenous S. trutta genetic diversity in the area remains intact, aside from the effects of acidification induced bottlenecks. Overall genetic diversity and extant populations have been increased by allochthonous stocking.  相似文献

This study aimed at analyzing the phytoplankton structure and dynamics in Paso de las Piedras Reservoir, Argentina, through the study of dominant species, diversity and similarity in relation with the abiotic environment. Samples were collected weekly or biweekly (January 2004–June 2005) at four sampling stations. The reservoir experienced a seasonal progression in phytoplankton composition that underlines six successional periods, each one characterized by the dominance of one or a few species. Cyanobacteria, green algae and diatoms were the most important constituents of the reservoir’s phytoplankton. Cyanobacteria dominated during summer and early autumn, green algae during late autumn and early winter, and diatoms during winter and spring. A high abundance of R. lacustris (Cryptophyceae) was observed during late September and early October. The general pattern of species succession is coherent with the general model of plankton seasonal succession described by the PEG model; however, the major discrepancy is the extremely short clear water phase observed. Successional periods were associated with changes in abiotic variables, and they showed differences in ecological traits. Cyanobacteria-Dictyosphaerium, Cyclotella, Stephanodiscus and Anabaena-diatom periods were characterized by a low number of cells, high diversity, with both dominance and specific richness low. On the contrary, during Cyanobacteria and Cyanobacteria II periods, the highest abundance was observed associated with low diversity and high dominance.  相似文献

The pelagic fish community of Loch Ness, U.K., is dominated by Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus. Previous studies have shown that the distribution of zooplankton along the south-west to north-east axis of this elongate loch is very dynamic and determined largely by prevailing winds, but Arctic charr are consistently more abundant in the southern half of the loch. In July 1993, the diet compositions of 161 Arctic charr from 53 to 330mm in length were determined and related to their spatial distribution and those of microcrustacean zooplankton and pelagic chironomid larvae and pupae. Diets were dominated by chironomid larvae, with chironomid pupae, Bythotrephes longimanus, Bosmina coregoni and Daphnia hyalina also frequently taken. Over the whole study period, B. longimanus were more important in the diet of fish from the northern half of the loch, while chironomid larvae were more important for fish from the southern half. As a result, per capita prey weight of fish from the south was greater than that of fish from the north. However, wind-induced changes in the distribution of zooplankton along the loch were accompanied by a change in the diet composition of Arctic charr from the south.  相似文献

A growth model ofPhragmites australis was verified using two independent sets of published field data. The model simulates the growth pattern of a well-established, monospecific stand ofP. australis in the absence of genetic diversity and environmental stresses of mainly nutrient and water deficiency. The model formulated using first order differential equations was combined with plant phenology and comprises five subroutines in which photosynthetically active radiation, shoot, root, rhizome and new rhizome biomass are calculated. Using the model, experimental results were reproduced within reasonable limits having concordance correlation coefficients of more than 0.75 for 70% of the output parameters, which was the main objective of the study. The modelled efficiencies of PAR were 7.15% and 3.09%, as opposed to 7.7% and 2.53% in experimental estimations, for Loch of Forfar and Loch of Balgavies, respectively. Production and seasonal fluxes of dry matter ofP. australis in Scottish lochs were estimated using the modelled quantities for the 1975 growing season in g m−2. They showed that 31% and 37% of total net photosynthate translocated to rhizomes before shoot senescence began in Loch of Forfar and Loch of Balgavies, respectively. Also in both lochs approximately 45% of total downward translocation came from accumulated shoot dry matter during senescence, while the rest came from photosynthesis before the shoots started to senesce.  相似文献

The epilimnetic phytoplankton and its relations to nutrient content in Lake Verevi through the whole vegetation period in 2000 were studied. Lake Verevi (surface 12.6 ha, mean depth 3.6 m, maximum depth 11 m) is a hypertrophic hard-water lake, where the so-called spring meromixis occurs due to an extremely warm spring. Most dissolved nutrients in the epilimnion were low already in spring, and their concentrations were quite stable during the study period. The concentration of total silicon was very low in spring but increased rapidly in summer. Total phosphorus followed the pattern for stratified eutrophic lakes, and total nitrogen was quite high. The stoichiometric N:P ratio fluctuated between 25 and 81. The dynamics of phytoplankton biomass with a spring peak from April to May and a late summer peak from July to August is typical of Estonian eutrophic lakes. Green algae and chrysophytes occurred in the phytoplankton throughout the vegetation period. The spring peak was dominated by diatoms (Synedra ulna and Synedra acus var. angustissima) and the summer peak was caused by Aphanizomenon klebahnii and Ceratium hirundinella. The study showed that in physically stratified systems, the total concentration of limiting resources and plain physical factors (light and temperature) may be more important in the determination of phytoplankton dominants than different resource ratios. A combination of light and temperature optimum, along with nutrient utilization and transport capacity, effectively segregates phytoplankton species and can be used for the explanation of seasonal succession pattern.  相似文献

The phytoplankton of the River Lujan (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied for a period of 18 months, together with physical and chemical variables, in relation to a pollution gradient. 167 taxa were recorded within a seasonal succession characterized by dominance of diatoms with a brief summer green algae facies. A combination of several biotic indices and multivariate analysis was employed to assess the impact of pollution on the phytoplankton community. The biotic indices used were species diversity and richness, algal quotients (green algae/diatom ratio, Centrales/Pennales ratio) and the SD succession rate index. Multivariate procedures included cluster analysis and ordination by PCA of both species and samples, stepwise discriminant analysis and multiple discriminant analysis of variance (MANOVA). Results indicate that community dynamism is attenuated at the more polluted sites, concomitant with an increased predominance of a broad-tolerance algal assemblage, co-dominated by Cyclotella meneghiniana and Nitzschia stagnorum. The changes in the community structure and dynamics described herein involved alterations in the distribution and relative proportions of the algae, rather than modifications in the basic species composition. These changes may not be readily detectable by methods which over-simplify the ecological information, such as systems of indicator species and biotic indices, designed to assess the degree of pollution. The suitability of multivariate analysis and biotic indices in river phytoplankton studies is further discussed.  相似文献
