Food preferences of two discrete black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis L.) populations were studied in northern Tanzania from 1964–1966 Feeding rhinoceros were watched for a period of one hour, and the plants which they selected and rejected were identified, either as they were feeding or when they had moved on. A technique was used which provided an indication of the relative importance of certain plants in the diet. Observations were made in six different habitat types used by the rhinoceros during the wet and dry seasons. A total of 307 hours was spent actually watching feeding rhinoceros. During this period they were observed eating 191 plant species from 49 botanical families. In all habitat types rhinoceros consume a wide variety of the spectrum of plants available, but are highly selective for herbs and shrubs. At certain periods of the year stenophagous characteristics are apparent, and the species shows a marked preference for legumes. Grasses make up a small proportion of the diet.  相似文献

Feeding and drinking habits of the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis L.) population in Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya, were studied from May 1971 to August 1972. A total of 108 rhinoceros were recorded in the study area. Feeding rhinoceros were followed behind their feeding tracks until they stopped feeding (or changed to another activity) and the plants which they selected were identified. A technique was used which provided an indication of the relative importance of certain plants in the diet during May to September 1971 (wet-semi-dry), October 1971 to February 1972 (dry) and February to May 1972 (wet-semi-dry). A total of 240 h were spent actually watching feeding rhinoceros in thirteen distribution areas. During this period rhinoceros were observed eating seventy plant species from thirty botanical families. In all distribution areas rhinoceros were very selective for herbs and shrubs, and showed a marked preference for Solanum incanum, Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia species. Rhinoceros were also observed to visit salt licks which contained sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium. Two feeding peaks, one in morning and the other in the afternoon were recorded. Black rhinoceros drink water mainly at night. They spend most of the night time near the watering places for they were mostly located in the mornings walking to the feeding grounds.  相似文献

We carried out a postrelease evaluation to determine predictors of habitat use and carrying capacity for the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli), which are critical for monitoring how the Ruma National Park sub-population may contribute to Kenya's meta-population strategy. We determined whether level of elevation, rockiness, shade, distance to fence, roads, and human settlements predict habitat use, differences in habitat and diet preference between female and male black rhinoceros, and the ecological carrying capacity (CC) of black rhinoceros in the park. We used standard ecological methods to collect data on predictors of habitat use, habitat preference and to estimate CC. Results show, first, that none of the environmental and anthropogenic factors evaluated predicted habitat use by black rhinoceros in the park. Second, although there was no significant difference in habitat preference between the sexes (U = 16.50, p = 0.306), there was a 60% difference in Jaccard's dissimilarity in diet selection between the sexes. Third, the park can support 65 black rhinoceros. Altogether, the findings suggest that the park has potential to support other sub-populations in Kenya. We recommend that future similar studies should incorporate population viability analysis and a community-based approach to forecast the species health and extinction risk.  相似文献

The impact of black rhinoceros (Bicornis diceros minor) on the tree euphorbias Euphorbia tetragona and Euphorbia triangularis was studied in the Great Fish River Reserve, South Africa. Black rhinoceros pushed over about 5–7% of the trees in a 2‐month period. There was a preference of rhinos for smaller trees, however this preference did not guarantee euphorbia survival in the larger size classes. This means that tree euphorbias could very well disappear from all areas accessible to rhinos. Rhino feeding choices were correlated with higher plant moisture content, higher nitrogen content, and a higher digestibility.  相似文献

AGE CRITERIA AND VITAL STATISTICS OF A BLACK RHINOCEROS POPULATION   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Tsavo National Park, in Kenya, probably contains the largest population of black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis (L.)) left in existence. Large-scale damage of the vegetation initiated by elephants and aggravated by fire has changed considerable areas of the park. The ecology of the black rhinoceros in this changing environment has been studied; the present status and population structure is considered here, including the development of detailed ageing criteria for the species, an analysis of natural mortality and survivorship, and a record of the structure of the living populations within the major habitat types. Crania and mandibles were collected from 506 rhinoceros found dead in all areas of the park. This material was divided into 20 relative age classes based on dental characteristics. Crude chronological ages, based on an estimate of the maximum expectation of life and the examination of seven known-age dental records of captive animals, were assigned to each age class. These crude ages were then refined by examination of 16 dental records of known-age wild rhinoceros, and a chronological age scale established. A survivorship curve of the population was thus constructed. Annual mortality during the first and second year of life is about 16%, and the indicated mean annual mortality from 5–25 y is 9.8%. A theoretical model of the population structure is shown, and analysis of the annual mortality and recruitment at birth suggests that the population was stable during the 1960's. Assuming the data represent a stable population the mean expectation of life at birth is 8.4 y. Thirteen major habitat types are described. The characteristics of the rhinoceros population within each habitat type were established both from ground studies and aerial observations. Nearly 700 rhinoceros were identified and catalogued on the ground, in sample areas selected for intensive study. Population structures, cow: calf ratios, and recruitment appear to be average in most habitat types. The analysis of recruitment at birth and mortality during the first year of life, both from computations from the survivorship curve and from the structure of the living populations, support the validity of the ageing criteria, and further suggest that the population was stable during the 1960's. Finally, the relationship between the elephant and the rhinoceros in the changing environment is discussed with reference to recent findings in elephant ecology. In conclusion it is recommended that population reduction of the Tsavo elephants should be initiated.  相似文献

The feeding preferences of lechwe, puku and waterbuck and the nutritive values of the major food plants show a correlation. Within their habitat the species show preference for the plants with the highest crude protein value. The preferred habitats of the species, although overlapping to a certain extent, prevented all three species from using the food plants with the highest protein values at all times. Puku and waterbuck, for example, utilized plants which were clearly inferior to the plant growth available to lechwe in August.

Summary Three chance observations on colour preference in birds feeding on berries are presented.Blackbirds (Turdus merula) in Bavaria fed in a cherry-tree irrespective of the colour of the cherries. They began feeding when the first cherries ripened and turned from greenish-yellow to light red. As the cherries were offered in different colours at the same time, and pell-mell in the same tree, the birds presumably quickly learned by trial and error to eat cherries of different colours.A little later Blackbirds, which must have been partly if not exclusively the same individuals, started to feed on red currants. Red and white currants were offered to them at the same time, and side by side but on different bushes. In this case there was a very clear spontaneous selection of red in preference to white. White berries were only eaten after the red bushes had been cleared up by the birds.Sardinian Warblers (Sylvia melanocephala) in Sardinia, feeding on berries ofRhamnus alaterna, which are coral red and hard when unripe and turn to blackish and soft getting ripe, prefered the black ones. It is presumed that they conditioned themselves to black and soft by trial and error learning. Generalisations as to birds preferring certain colours in berries they feed on can not be drawn from any special case.  相似文献

The black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is a critically endangered species facing multiple anthropogenic pressures in its natural home range across Africa. Black rhinoceros are difficult to maintain ex situ and subject to diseases that are linked with captive dietary factors. Hemochromatosis is of particular concern, as it is a common finding at necropsy of captive adults, and has been linked to excessive dietary iron intake. This intake study investigates the select nutrient composition of the diets offered to and consumed by five captive black rhinoceros in a UK zoo to evaluate, ensure adequacy, and/or make adjustments if necessary. Alfalfa hay, pellets and six browse species offered were analyzed for iron (Fe), copper (Cu), vitamin E, and tannic acid content. Intakes were quantified and evaluated against levels found in wild diets and the currently available feeding guidelines for black rhinoceros. Diets eaten by five individual rhinoceros (1.4%–2.3% of bodyweight dry matter [DM] intake), comprising 68%–82% hay, 6%–13% pellets, and 13%–27% browse, contained 76–98 mg/kg Fe (on a DM basis), fell within the ranges of plants eaten by free‐ranging rhinoceros (45–140 mg/kg DM), as well as values recommended for captive‐fed browsing rhinoceros (50–100 mg/kg DM). Consumed diets were found to be marginal to adequate in Cu (9–11 mg/kg DM) compared with the recommended 10 mg/kg DM; dietary vitamin E ranged from 54 to 79 IU/kg DM, and tannic acid measured 13–14 g/kg DM. Commercial pellets were the primary contributor of dietary Fe, Cu, and vitamin E, containing up to 10 times more of each of those nutrients than the forages. Native browses were important sources of lower Fe ingredients, as well as appropriate levels of dietary Cu and vitamin E (dependent on species). Interestingly, pellets (23 g/kg) and alfalfa hay (14 g/kg) contained higher concentrations of tannic acid compared with any of the browses fed (4–13 g/kg). All nutritional parameters evaluated were close to recommended dietary levels, diets resembled values consumed in the wild, and the animals remained clinically healthy throughout the study. Overall, diets were considered nutritionally adequate for captive feeding of black rhinoceros; evaluating the nutrient composition of all ingredients, including browse plants in diets, provides important information for achieving optimal nutrient balance.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Wigeon wintering in the vicinity of Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve is described. The birds roost on mudflats in the Bay during the day and feed, mainly at night, on saltings and wet pastures in the surrounding area. Their food, ascertained from gut analyses, consists largely of grass leaves; with roots, stolons, bulbils and seeds of secondary importance. Analyses including gizzard contents much exaggerated the importance of seeds because they are retained in the gizzard for longer than softer items.
An investigation of Wigeon feeding behaviour and food preferences on salting pasture is described, using the density of the birds' droppings on different vegetation zones to assess usage, and faecal analysis to determine the composition of the selected diet. The technique of faecal analysis is discussed in relation to feeding studies on grazing wildfowl.
Disturbance is a very important factor affecting the availability of feeding habitat, and this can mask the birds' food preferences. Early in the winter, Wigeon select Puccinellia maritima in preference to Agrostis stolonifera and Festuca rubra. They do this initially by selecting the broad zone in which they feed, by selecting feeding sites within zones, and particular plant species from a mixed sward. The birds are more selective when feeding in less preferred zones. The mechanisms and reasons for food selection are discussed in relation to characteristics of the habitat and of the plants. It is concluded that the nutritional value of the plants is important in determining the birds' preference, but that other factors also play a part.
Wigeon are flexible in their feeding habits and are increasingly found on inland habitats. They are adaptable in using new roosts, and in modifying their behaviour in response to changes in food supply and changes in disturbance pressures.  相似文献

This study investigated the impact of introduced rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, on the distribution and feeding of mountain catfish, Amphilius uranoscopus, on the Nyika Plateau, Malawi. Twenty-four sites were sampled over three different periods in three rivers. Fish habitat units were identified as separate riffle or pool, about 100 m in length, at each site. Each habitat unit was sampled for fish, invertebrates and physical habitat characteristics. Twenty four and 20 habitat units were sampled, respectively, from sites with catfish and sites with trout and catfish. In the absence of trout, the mountain catfish was associated with all depth ranges, with strong preference to shallow and moderate depth, and moderate to fast flow on coarse substratum type (gravel, pebble and boulder). In the presence of trout, the catfish was frequently associated with very shallow depth and slow flow. In its natural habitat, the catfish fed randomly, but preferred the most abundant invertebrate taxa, especially black fly larvae (Simuliidae). In the presence of trout, the catfish preferred mostly the chironomids. The preference by catfish for Simuliidae, also preferred by trout, was less in the trout streams than in its natural habitat. The prey taxa in the catfish stream were diverse, and consisted of large invertebrate predators. Trout streams were dominated by few prey taxa, especially black flies and chironomids. The catfish of the Nyika Plateau may represent genetically unique populations in southern Africa. Introductions of trout into rivers where they currently do not occur on the Nyika should be prevented in order to maintain the genetic diversity of the Amphilius uranoscopus species complex. Home range area and habitat utilization by translocated black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis were studied at Sweetwaters Rhino Sanctuary in the Laikipia district of Kenya. Home ranges were estimated from sightings and tracking data; home range area was very variable between individuals (range 2.25–14.39km2, minimum convex polygons), and was independent of age or sex. Groups of rhinoceros shared common home ranges, with little or no overlap between groups; each group consisted of one adult male, one or more adult females and their calves, and sometimes immature animals. Rhinoceros utilize a variety of habitats, but within these show positive selection for certain habitats. Home ranges generally included more Euclea bush, and less grassland and Acacia bush than expected. Rhinoceros make use of regular resting places, or bedding sites, generally situated in bushland in secluded areas, often in dense thickets. Rhinoceros defaecate at dung piles or middens. Middens are located throughout the range not just on the boundaries; the highest density of middens was found in riverine woodland, and the lowest density in grassland and Acacia bush.  相似文献

Summary During winter (May through October) many Lesser Sheathbills Chionis minor at Marion Island in the sub-Antarctic were obliged to leave their preferred foraging habitat in penguin colonies to forage for invertebrates on the island's coastal plain. The study describes factors affecting feeding success, time budgets and predation risk of the sheathbills which exploited these small, patchily dispersed prey. The birds appeared to select prey 1 mm in diameter, and ignore smaller, common invertebrates.Sheathbills were highly selective of foraging habitat. During 17 censuses made through the winter, 97% of the 1,504 birdsightings were at only eight of the 19 available vegetation types. Multiple regression analysis revealed that prey density was the most important criterion in habitat preference, followed by plant canopy height and distance of the habitat from the sea. These variables accounted for 78% of the variance of habitat use. Focal-animal observations in a sample of habitats showed that feeding success was correlated with prey density and distance from the sea. Tall vegetation impeded the locomotion and foraging of sheathbills. The sheathbills reduced predation risk from skuas Catharacta lonnbergi and travelling time by foraging near the shore. The spatial distribution of prey within vegetation types was apparently unimportant in habitat selection.During winter 83% of the sheathbills in the study foraged communally and 98% roosted communally. Flocks occurred only on good quality habitat and flocking probably facilitated habitat selection. Feeding success increased initially with increasing flock size but decreased in flocks greater than 15 birds, which was attributed to localized prey deletions. The sheathbills spent 88% of the daytime foraging; and feeding, looking around and walking comprised 99% of foraging time. Feeding time increased with increasing flock size, looking around decreased but walking was unaffected. Aggression was rare, was unaffected by flock size and did not significantly affect feeding. A probability model showed that sheathbills could greatly reduce predation risk by flocking but the benefits would not improve much in flocks greater than eight birds. The habitat selection, time budgets and feeding success of adults, subadults and juveniles were very similar. The exploitation of terrestrial invertebrates by sheathbills was interpreted as an expansion of the population's trophic niche to tap an underexploited resource on a species-poor island.  相似文献

Mortality rates are high among captive African black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis), due to increased susceptibility to disease. The ability to rescue genetic material from individuals that die unexpectedly represents a practical approach to assist ex situ conservation efforts. The objectives of the present study were to attempt postmortem oocyte recovery from ovaries of African black rhinoceroses (N = 6) and to test the efficacy of equine protocols for rhinoceros oocyte IVM and IVF using cryopreserved rhinoceros sperm. The interval from ovary removal to oocyte recovery was 25.3 ± 13.9 h (mean ± SD). Ovaries were transported at 4 °C or 22 °C and effects of temperature on postmortem oocyte competence was evaluated. Numbers of oocytes collected per female averaged 15.8 ± 6.9. In total, 95 oocytes were recovered. Of these, 85 were inseminated using homologous sperm and 10 were inseminated using heterologous sperm. Overall, substantial numbers of viable oocytes were retrieved from African black rhinoceros ovaries 1 to 2 days postmortem from ovaries stored at ambient temperature. A proportion of these oocytes matured and underwent penetration and fertilization by heterologous or homologous frozen-thawed rhinoceros sperm. The reproductive competence of postmortem oocytes was further demonstrated by development of a single two-cell embryo. Despite the need for further refinements, gamete rescue in the rhinoceros has promise for producing rhinoceros embryos, as well as testing sperm functions in vitro.  相似文献

Although redstarts Phoenicurus phoenicurus and black redstarts P. ochruros breed in different habitats they have been found to interbreed and to produce viable and fertile offspring, which backcross to the parental species. In a dual choice experiment, I investigated the preference of black redstarts and redstarts, and F1-hybrids for different habitat structures in an aviary. Black redstarts strongly preferred a perch type on which they could stand to a perch they had to cling to. Redstarts were less selective and used both perch types equally as long as food was offered between both perches on the ground. If food was given at one of the perches redstarts changed their preference depending on food location. Black redstarts, however, showed only a slight response. They always preferred the same perch type. Hybrids behaved like redstarts. They did not show a preference as long as food was placed on the ground. When food was offered at one of the perch sites they more often chose the one with food. Due to high phenotypic variability among individuals perch type preference overlapped between the three experimental groups.  相似文献

The efficacy of censusing black rhinoceros ( Diceros bicornis Linnaeus) populations from the air was tested. Repeated aerial counts were made of the black rhinoceros population centered on Qlduvai Gorge, Tanzania, where the number of rhinoceros on the ground is known accurately. Even under the most ideal conditions only 50% of the population was detected by observers in an aircraft, and factors accounting for this are considered. It is concluded that the light aircraft is of limited value in providing estimates of black rhinoceros populations, and estimates based purely on aerial counts are subject to considerable variation.  相似文献

Mating system and reproductive skew in the black rhinoceros   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Only approximately 2600 black rhinoceros survive today, mainly in small, isolated populations of < 100 animals. The management of remaining black rhinoceros populations aims at preserving natural levels of genetic relatedness and optimizing breeding success, which requires an accurate knowledge of the mating system, reproductive skew and effective population size. DNA was extracted from faecal samples from a community of 35 wild black rhinoceros, and microsatellites were used to characterize patterns of paternity of 19 offspring born from eight females in this community. Paternity could be ascribed unequivocally for each offspring. Although our conclusions must be considered tentative, we present the first genetic evidence that black rhinoceros males are polygynous, with a high variance in reproductive success. We also describe a noninvasive management tool that can be used for the genetic management of this critically endangered species, both in the wild and in captivity.  相似文献

The complexity and magnitude of threats to black (Diceros bicornis) and white (Ceratotherium simum) rhinoceros conservation in Africa have triggered global concerns and actions. In this study, we analyzed (i) threats to rhinoceros conservation including external shocks, (ii) historical rhinoceros conservation strategies in Zimbabwe and Africa, more broadly, and (iii) opportunities for enhanced rhinoceros conservation in Zimbabwe and Africa. A literature search from 1975 to 2020 was carried out using a predefined search protocol, involving a number of filters based on a set of keywords to balance search sensitivity with specificity. A total of 193 articles, which were most relevant to key themes on rhinoceros conservation, were used in this study. The common threats to rhinoceros conservation identified in this paper include poaching, habitat fragmentation and loss, international trade in illegal rhino products, and external shocks such as global financial recessions and pandemics. Cascading effects emanating from these threats include small and isolated populations, which are prone to genetic, demographic, and environmental uncertainties. Rhinoceros conservation strategies being implemented include education and awareness campaigns, better equipped and more antipoaching efforts, use of innovative systems and technologies, dehorning, and enhancing safety nets, and livelihoods of local communities. Opportunities for rhinoceros conservation vary across the spatial scale, and these include (a) a well‐coordinated stakeholder and community involvement, (b) strategic meta‐population management, (c) enhancing law enforcement initiatives through incorporating real‐time surveillance technologies and intruder detection sensor networks for crime detection, (d) scaling up demand reduction awareness campaigns, and (e) developing more certified wildlife crime and forensic laboratories, and information repository for international corporation.  相似文献

Background

Ecologically similar species often coexist by partitioning use of habitats or resources. Such partitioning can occur through divergent or shared niches. We investigated overlap in habitat use and spatial co-occurrence by sympatric Asiatic black bears and sun bears in three habitats in Thailand, and thereby assessed which niche model best accounts for their coexistence.

Methods/Principal Findings

We used density of species-specific signs to assess habitat use. Signs of both bear species occurred in all three habitats, and on >60% of sampling transects. Both species fed mostly on fruit; insect feeding signs were uncommon, and were mostly from sun bears. Significant differences in habitat use occurred only in montane forest, the habitat in which fruit was most abundant; incidence of black bear sign there was six times higher than that of sun bears. Habitat use was similar between the two species in the other habitats, which comprised 85% of the area. Of 10 habitat attributes examined, fruiting tree density was the best predictor of occurrence for both species. Models that included interspecific competition (fresh foraging activity of the other species) were less supported than the top models without competition.

Conclusions/Significance

Bear species co-occurrence at both coarse and fine spatial scales and use of the same resources (fruit trees) indicated common niche preferences. However, their habitat use differed in ways expected from their physical differences: larger black bears dominated in the most fruit-rich habitat, and smaller sun bears used less-preferred insects. These results indicate broadly overlapping fundamental niches combined with asymmetric competition—features consistent with the concept of shared preference niches. This model of the niche has received little attention in ecology, but appears to be relatively common in nature.  相似文献

As the population sizes of the black and white rhinoceroses continues to decline, more efforts are needed in multiple areas to help with the conservation efforts. One area being explored is the use of genetic diversity information to aid conservation decisions. In this study, we designed 21 microsatellite primers for white and black rhinoceroses, 16 and 17 of which amplified bands in the white and black rhinoceros, respectively. Out of these primers all 16 were polymorphic in the white rhinoceros and 12 of the 17 were polymorphic in the black rhinoceros. The mean number of alleles was 3.31 and 2.12, the expected heterozygosities were 0.420 and 0.372, and the observed heterozygosities were 0.436 and 0.322 for the white and black rhinoceroses, respectively. Seven of the primers produced different allele sizes and variations that distinguished between black and white rhinoceroses. Further genetic analyses with larger wild population sample sizes and markers are recommended to obtain a better understanding of the genetic structure of the black and white rhinoceros populations in order to be useful in the conservation efforts of these critically endangered species.
