A review of the fairly muddled conditions in the early history of Tubifex tubifex (O. F. Müller, 1774) is given. The identity of Müller's (1774) Lumbricus tubifex is discussed, analytical examinations of samples from the most likely type-locality of the species are accounted for, and a neo type has been selected. For comparison, other "Tubifex" specimens, both European and American, are likewise analysed and a scrutiny of the literature concerning the species and its synonyms is undertaken. The survey results in a clearer picture of T. tubifex and a revised view of the qualifying characters on the specific level. Diagnoses of the species T. tubifex (O. F. Müller) and T. fissidens sp.n., Kernall, MS, 1914, are given. 相似文献

Cold-resistance studies of marine invertebrates have concentrated on intertidal sedentary organisms, which are often subjected to subzero air temperatures in winter. Mobile rock pool inhabitants have been rarely studied because such habitats are thought to buffer environmental variation. However, it is not uncommon for small upper-shore rock pools (2 by 1 cm) to become completely frozen. Such supralittoral habitats are subject to extreme physicochemical fluctuations especially in salinity (0 to 300‰) and temperature (−1 to +32°C) due to evaporation and dilution. The dominant invertebrate in such habitats is the harpacticoid copepod Tigriopus brevicornis.Aspects of the cryobiology of T. brevicorniswere investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermograms obtained from DSC allowed determinations of freeze-onset (supercooling point, SCP), melt-onset, and melt-peak (melting point, MP) temperatures, together with estimation of the proportion of water freezing in the samples. The effects of acclimation salinity, temperature, starvation, and reproductive state on these cryobiological parameters were investigated. Acclimation to increasing salinity depressed the SCP, with the highest salinity (70‰) producing the lowest SCP, melt-onset, and MP temperatures at −27.5, −15.2, and −9.5°C respectively. The highest acclimation temperature (20°C) produced the lowest SCP (−23.4°C). Starvation significantly increased the SCP, melt-onset, and MP temperatures in comparison to fed individuals acclimated to the same salinity. The presence of eggs or ovaries in individual copepods elevated the SCP compared to nongravid females and males. LT 50studies showed that acclimation to high salinity improved the ability of T. brevicornisto survive in frozen seawater. Seventy parts per thousand acclimated individuals had an LT 50of 64.9 h compared with just 1.4 h for 5‰ acclimated individuals in frozen seawater at −5°C. The study shows that the cold-resistance capabilities of T. brevicorniscan be affected by several different factors, and the link between the osmoconforming nature of this species and its cold resistance is discussed. 相似文献

Adult specimens of Terebratulina retusa and Crania anomala have one pair of metanephridia. Each metanephridium is composed of a ciliated nephridial funnel (nephrostome) and an outleading nephridial canal, thus, these organs are open ducts connecting the metacoel of the animal with the outer medium. In both species, the inner side of a nephrostome is lined by a columnar monociliated epithelium which contacts the coelothel within one of the two ileoparietal bands. The coelothel contains basal filaments (in C. anomala these are definite myofilaments). The canal epithelium also consists of monociliated columnar cells which differ from the nephrostome epithelial cells in size and some cell components. Within the nephropore, the canal epithelium makes contact with the so-called inner mantle epithelium which lines the mantle cavity. The nephrostome epithelial cells and the canal epithelial cells never contain any contractile filaments. There are always continuous transitions between these different epithelia and distinct borders cannot be observed. The present results, especially in comparison to Phoronida, do not contradict the hypothesis of a coelothelially derived nephridial funnel and an ectodermal nephridial duct in Brachiopoda. But with regard to the differences between Phoronida and Brachiopoda (larval protonephridia and podocytes in the adults are unknown in Brachiopoda), further investigations have to be done to test the hypothesis of such heterogeneously assembled metanephridia. 相似文献

A population of Ascidia mentula O.F. Müller on the Swedish west coast has been studied over an 8-yr period by aid of non-destructive (photographic) recordings of a vertical rock face at a depth of 25 m. Supplemental sampling by diving at a depth of 25 m was carried out over a 1-yr period. A demographical analysis revealed elevated mortality during the late summer and during periods of especially low temperature. The mortality was found to be relatively independent of age and was also rather uniform between different years and generations. The mortality is discussed in relation to reproduction and ambient temperature. Larval settling took place all the year round with maximum activity in August and September, but was subject to high interannual variability. It was concluded that variation in recruitment was the most important factor regulating populations of A. mentula. The growth was measured from settling to death and showed great variability between single individuals and between different generations. Negative growth was recorded especially when the ambient temperature reached a high level. Histological examinations showed mature gonads over the full year of study, but with a quantitative difference. Throughout the year, mature oocytes and sperms were present in the gonoducts in 50 to 80% of the collected animals and in close to 100% during the peak of activity. 相似文献

Samples of the polymorphic cladoceran Bosmina longirostris were collected in several lakes and ponds in Western Germany between 1993 and 1999. The shape of the first antennule was used as a qualitative criterion to classify 1241 individuals to three morphs (` longirostris', ` cornuta', ` pellucida') according to Lieder ( Crustacea: Cladocera: Bosminidae. Stuttgart, Germany: Gustav. Fischer Verlag, 1996). Eight morphometric variables were subsequently measured in each individual to quantify size‐ and shape‐related features. Principal component and discriminant analyses were used to describe the morphological variation within and among the three morphs. Seasonal environmental changes modified several traits and thus, cyclomorphosis accounted for a high proportion of within‐morph variation. However, there was no gradual change from one morph to another. As well among‐morph variation was considerably greater than within‐morph variation. Consequently, the disagreement between the qualitative pre‐classification and the assignment basing on morphometric discriminant functions was low (4.6–12.0%). Considering that each morph is morphologically well‐defined, and that the different morphs coexisted over several generations in the same lake we conclude that they represent different species rather than variants of one polymorphic species. Therefore, we recognize beside the nominal taxon Bosmina longirostris ( 26 ) two more species: Bosmina cornuta ( 10 ) and Bosmina pellucida 30 . 相似文献

Feeding rates of Brachionus plicatilis were studied for two types of food — algae Monochrysis lutheri and baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisae. The main regularities of changes in filtration rate and ration were studied in small culture volumes (1 ml) for adult amictic females depending on food concentration (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 · 10 6 cells · ml −1), ambient temperature (16 and 26 °C), and salinity (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ppt). B. plicatilis ration did not depend on the salinity, but was largely determined by temperature and food concentration. It was found that at 16 and 26 °C the dependence of the ingestion rate (ration) on food concentration differed greatly. A hypothesis was suggested to explain this phenomenon. A critical concentration of both types of food at which the increase in the rotifer ration ceased is 4 · 10 6 cells · ml −1. This is the minimum “background” food concentration for B. plicatilis mass cultivation. The average rations measured at the concentration of M. lutheri and S. cerevisae of 4 · 10 6 cells · ml −1 where 1.3 ± 0.1 and 4.8 ± 1.3 μg dry weight. · ind −1 · day −1 at 26 °C and 0.54 ± 0.1 and 1.9 μg d. w. · ind −1 · day −1 at 16 °C, respectively. The rations obtained in the laboratory were corrected for the conditions of rotifer commercial production in the open field in summer time. The correct values were 0.86 and 0.72 μg d. w. · ind −1 · day −1 for algae and yeast, respectively. 相似文献

The neck region of the mature spermatozoon of Discus rotundatus is described. No evidence for a centriole or centriolar derivative is obtained. Nine striated coarse fibres and the two central fibres of the axoneme extend into the base of the implantation fossa. The axonemal doublet system is disrupted in the neck region. There are two fibrous accessory structures located between the central doublet and the striated coarse fibres. 相似文献

Intra‐ and interpopulation variation was studied, by means of cellulose acetate allozyme electrophoresis, on 16 populations of helicoid snail Bradybaena fruticum (O. F. Müller, 1774) in South Poland. Four enzyme systems, coded by seven loci, were analysed. Calculated with Fisher's technique and Ohta's D‐statistics, four cases of linkage disequilibrium were detected, reflecting population subdivision. The mean number of alleles per locus equalled 2.16 and the mean expected heterozygosity was 0.287. Exact multipopulation and multilocus tests for Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium indicated a statistically significant homozygote excess in all the loci and all populations but three. Each population, however, was at Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium for most loci, though the values of f ( FIS) were usually high. Homozygote excess was ascribed partly to inbreeding and partly to Wahlund's effect (spatial subdivision of population; at least two cohorts of adult, reproducing snails), disrupting selection in this polymorphic species not excluded. F‐statistics showed relatively low values of θ ( FST ; mean for all loci = 0.224) and those of Nm usually below 1 (mean 0.866). Pairwise values of either θ or Cavalli‐Sforza and Edwards arc distance were statistically significantly associated with geographic distances. Contrary to this, no geographic pattern of interpopulation differences was detected by correspondence analysis on allele frequencies, non‐linear multidimensional scaling, UPGMA clustering or neighbour‐joining trees constructed on θ and Cavalli‐Sforza and Edwards arc distance. Accordingly, some most distant populations were more similar to one another than the close ones. 相似文献

The ephippial female of Acantholeberis curvirostris has a dorsal reservoir in the anterior part of the carapace, which is filled with a viscous substance. This cement extrudes through the gap between the cuticule of the head and carapace during moulting and fixes the ephippium to the substrate. 相似文献

Several land snail species are highly polymorphic regarding their shell colouration. This polymorphism has been related to predatory effects as well as climatic reasons, assuming that dark morphs benefit from being more cryptic and therefore less prone to predation, whereas pale morphs are at an advantage under solar radiation, as they are suspected to heat up less. However, the assumption of different thermal capacities of these morphs is based on experiments with little standardisation or little environmental relevance. In this study, we aimed at measuring thermal capacities of two different morphs (pale versus dark-brown banded) of the Mediterranean land snail Theba pisana, applying a standardised and environmentally relevant test set-up, in order to prove whether darker morphs indeed do heat up more than lighter coloured morphs. We did not find any differences in the thermal capacity of the different morphs and conclude that thermal capacity of the shell is predominantly defined by its material rather than its coloration. These results are discussed with regard to previous studies on thermal characteristics of different land snail morphs and correlations between climate and morph distribution. 相似文献

The surface of guanaco footpads is characterized by hairless skin with up to 4‐mm‐thick stratum corneum that protects from abrasion. The horny layer is pliable and elastic, and ensures firm contact with irregular ground. It is padded with a particular structure of the subcutaneous layer, the digital cushion. The flat cushions of each of the two digits are of elongated ovate shape, each about 45‐mm long, up to 20‐mm wide, and 8‐mm thick. The cushions are lined by a 1–2‐mm‐thick capsule that resembles a tunica albuginea. The capsule consists of coarse collagen fibers, with elastic fibers absent. The cushion capsule and dermis approach each other, and fuse along a line that runs parallel to the longitudinal axes of cushion and digit. Loose connective tissue rich in elastic fibers and acidic glycosaminoglycans separates dermis and cushion capsule lateral to the narrow interconnecting zone. The cushion capsule encloses cloudy yellowish, gelatinous material. Microscopy shows bundles of elastic fibers in abundant mucinous matrix. Tightly gathered elastic bundles adjoin the inner surface of the capsule. Rough cords of elastic fibers branch out from there and traverse to the opposite side. The cushion is pressed flat, and elastic fibers are stretched when bearing weight. With relief of load, elastic fibers contract and reset the cushion's shape. Contractile cells are absent. A resistant capsule and easily malleable mucinous contents establish the functioning as a gel pad. Mucinous connective tissue between elastic fiber bundles contains abundant basophilic matrix. Hyaluronan, chondroitin sulfate, and dermatan sulfate are main matrix constituents. Spindle‐shaped or stellate fibroblasts contain vimentin, S100 protein, and neuron specific enolase. Moprhology, staining characteristics and synthesis activities of these cells meet the criteria to be classified as myxoid cells. The connective tissue in guanaco digital cushions represents myxoid tissue. J. Morphol. 276:331–341, 2015. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Fluorescence-labelled phalloidin in combination with confocal laser scanning microscopy (cLSM) has been used to reconstruct the body musculature in Encentrum mucronatum and Dicranophorus forcipatus in order to gain insight into the architecture of body musculature in representatives of the hitherto uninvestigated Dicranophoridae. In both species, a system of outer circular and inner longitudinal muscles has been found. In E. mucronatum, seven circular muscles (musculi circulares I–VII) and six paired longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales I–VI) have been identified. In D. forcipatus, eight circular muscles (musculi circulares I–VIII) and nine paired longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales I–IX) are present. In both species, some of the longitudinal muscles span the whole specimen, while others are shorter and connect head and trunk or foot and trunk. Differences in shape and extension of the circular muscles in both species are related to differences in structure of the trunk integument. Surveying the literature on rotifer musculature, muscles identified in this study are homologised across Rotifera and given individual names. Based on the study of E. mucronatum and D. forcipatus and previous studies on other rotifers, a system of musculature in the ground pattern of Ploima comprising at least three circular muscles (pars coronalis, corona sphincter, musculus circumpedalis) and three pairs of longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales ventrales, musculi longitudinales dorsales and musculi longitudinales capitum) is suggested. 相似文献

Although gastropods have been crawling through the ocean and on the land for 60 million years, we still know very little about the sticky mucus produced in their foot. Most research has been focused on marine species in particular and, to a lesser extent, on the well‐known terrestrial species Arion vulgaris and Cornu aspersum. Within this study, we aim to characterize the foot anatomy of a smaller representative of the family Helicidae, the banded snail Cepaea hortensis. We are particularly interested in the microanatomy of the foot glands, their position, and the histochemical nature of their secretory content. Characterization of the dorsal foot region of Cepaea hortensis reveals four glands, differing in their size and in the granules produced. Histochemically, three of them react positively for sugars (PAS staining and lectin affinity tests for mannose, glucose and N‐acetyl‐d ‐glucosamine) and acidic proteins (positive Alcian blue and Toluidine blue staining), indicating the presence of acidic glycosaminoglycans. The fourth gland type does not react to any of these dyes. The ventral pedal region includes two different gland types, which are positive for the presence of acidic glycoproteins, with a lectin affinity for mannose only. A comparison with Helix pomatia indicates differences regarding the number of glands and their contents. In Helix, only three gland types are described in the dorsal region of the foot, which show a similar granular appearance but nevertheless differ in their chemical composition. Congruently, there are two gland types in the ventral region in both species, whereas in Helix an additional sugar moiety is found. This raises the question whether these differences between the pedal glandular systems of both helicid species are the result of protection or size‐related adaptations, as they occur in the same habitat. 相似文献

Randel, N. and Bick, A. 2011. Development, morphology and ultrastructure of the branchial crown of Fabricia stellaris (Müller, 1774) (Polychaeta: Sabellida: Fabriciinae). — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 93 : 409–421. Sabellidae and Serpulidae are well‐known tube‐building polychaetes with a distinctive and often spectacularly colourful branchial crown. Morphological investigations suggest that these taxa form the monophyletic clade Sabellida, with the adelphotaxa Sabellidae and Serpulidae, but the relationship between these taxa remains ambiguous. Molecular investigations have indicated that the Fabriciinae, major taxon of Sabellidae, belongs to Serpulidae, thereby making Sabellidae paraphyletic; however, morphological characters are absent to support this result. We investigate the development, anatomy and ultrastructure of the branchial crown of Fabricia stellaris (Müller, 1774), describing morphological characteristics useful not only for constructing morphological phylogenies but also for understanding the evolution of the branchial crown. The morphology of the radioles and pinnules does not differ from each other. The supporting tissue of the branchial crown consists of myoepithelial cells and a solid extracellular matrix (ECM). Both ciliated and non‐ciliated cells form the epidermal layer; ciliated cells shape the food groove. Most important is the result that radioles and pinnules within Sabellida may not be homologous, because the morphology and the branching of radioles and pinnules are completely different between Sabellinae, Fabriciinae and Serpulidae. The terms ‘primary branch’ for radioles and ‘secondary branch’ for pinnules are proposed for Fabriciinae. The phylogeny of the Sabellida is discussed. 相似文献
