Summary Three species of lizards (Agama agama, Mabuya perrotetii, and Sceloporus orcutti) were tested for a possible increase in mean selected body temperature (MSBT) in response to intraperitoneal injection of alcohol-killed Aeromonas sobria, a gram-negative bacterium known to be pathogenic to reptiles. A paired experimental design was utilized in which each animal was given an injection of sterile saline and 1 · 1010 A. sobria. Body temperatures were monitored via indwelling cloacal thermocouples at 4-min intervals for one 12-h light period under saline injection and for two consecutive 12-h light periods under bacteria injection. Agama agama demonstrated a significant increase in MSBT on both day 1 and day 2 of bacteria injection with increases of 2.7 and 2.3°C, respectively. The latency period on day 1 averaged 6.4 h. Sceloporus orcutti demonstrated a significant decrease in MSBT on day 1 of bacteria injection and a significant increase in MSBT of 1.0°C on day 2 of bacteria injection. No fever was evident in S. orcutti until the beginning of day 2. Mabuya perrotetii did not exhibit a significant change in MSBT on either day 1 or day 2 of bacteria injection. Agama agama (family Agamidae) is the first Old World reptile to exhibit a fever response to bacteria injection, and with these results fever has now been demonstrated in the lizard families Agamidae, Iguanidae, and Teiidae.Abbreviations MSBT mean selected body temperature - T b body temperature  相似文献

Extracts and perfusate effluents of lungs of the rainbow lizard (Agama agama) were assayed for prostaglandin-like activity. Results of differential bioassay and thin-layer chromatography suggested that the prostanoid was predominantly PGE2-like. The mean PGE2-like content of 10 lizard lung extracts was 2.9 micrograms g-1 wet weight compared with 146 ng g-1 in rat lungs. Mechanical pressure applied to the lung during perfusion through the pulmonary vasculature provoked the release of large quantities of PGE2-like material. This release was blocked by fatty acid cyclooxygenase inhibitors. Compared with guinea-pig and rat lungs, lizard lungs exhibited a markedly low capacity for inactivating PGE2. In view of an apparently high prostaglandin-forming and a low inactivating capacity, we speculate that under certain circumstances, lizard lungs may release vasoactive substances into the circulation.  相似文献

The relaxant effects of isoprenaline, noradrenaline, and adrenaline on the isolated rectum of the rainbow lizard (Agama agama) were studied. Responses were measured as a reduction of carbachol-induced contractions for each sympathomimetic agent. Isoprenaline, adrenaline, noradrenaline produced a dose-dependent relaxation of this preparation and the order of potency was as given. The pD2 value of 8.15 +/- 1.88 obtained for isoprenaline was significantly different (p less than 0.05) from those for adrenaline (5.80 +/- 0.90) and noradrenaline (5.25 +/- 1.18). H35/25, propranolol, and practolol competitively antagonized the relaxant effects of isoprenaline on the isolated lizard rectum. The pA2 values for these beta-adrenoceptor antagonists did not differ significantly (at p less than 0.05). alpha-Adrenoceptor antagonists, phentolamine and phenoxybenzamine, failed to alter the relaxant responses of these sympathometics to any appreciable extent. These results are interpreted to suggest that the relaxant effect produced by these sympathomimetics are mediated predominantly by beta-adrenoceptors that are not significantly differentiated into subtypes. alpha-Adrenoceptors in this preparation contribute minimally to the observed inhibitory response following sympathomimetic stimulation.  相似文献

Prey capture in Agama stellio was recorded by high-speed video in combination with the electrical activity of both jaw and hyolingual muscles. Quantification of kinematics and muscle activity patterns facilitated their correlation during kinematic phases. Changes in angular velocity of the gape let the strike be subdivided into four kinematic phases: slow open (SOI and SOII), fast open (FO), fast close (FC), and slow close-power stroke (SC/PS). The SOI phase is marked by initial activity in the tongue protractor, the hyoid protractor, and the ring muscle. These muscles project the tongue beyond the anterior margin of the jaw. During the SOII phase, a low level of activity in the jaw closers correlates with a decline of the jaw-opening velocity. Next, bilateral activity in the jaw openers defines the start of the FO phase. This activity ends at maximal gape. Simultaneously, the hyoid retractor and the hyoglossus become active, causing tongue retraction during the FO phase. At maximal gape, the jaw closers contract simultaneously, initiating the FC phase. After a short pause, they contract again and the prey is crushed during the SC/PS phase. Our results support the hypothesis of tongue projection in agamids by Smith ([1988] J. Morphol. 196:157–171), and show some striking similarities with muscle activity patterns during the strike in chameleons (Wainwright and Bennett [1992a] J. Exp. Biol. 168:1–21). Differences are in the activation pattern of the hyoglossus. The agamid tongue projection mechanism appears to be an ideal mechanical precursor for the ballistic tongue projection mechanism of chameleonids; the key derived feature in the chameleon tongue projection mechanism most likely lies in the changed motor pattern controlling the hyoglossus muscle. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The principal ovarian structures in Agama agama are non-yolky and yolky follicles, corpora lutea and atretic follicles. Hypophysectomy affects all stages of vitellogenesis and follicular atresia results. Atresia involves resorption and digestion of yolk by the granulosa cells, which eventually undergo a fatty degeneration. Immature follicles and corpora lutea are not affected by hypophysectomy.
Injections of 0.2 mg FSH (NIH-FSH-S3 ovine) on alternate days for 14 days not only maintain vitellogenesis in hypophysectomized animals, but also tend to overstimulate the small follicles to synthesize yolk. A similar dose of LH(NIH-LH-SII ovine) fails to maintain vitellogenesis in hypophysectomized animals, while a higher dose of 0.4 mg LH tends to overstimulate the small follicles. An unusual rupture of yolky follicles in FSH injected lizards is reported and a possible development of such follicles into corpora lutea is discussed.  相似文献

The savannah and tropical forest biomes of Africa have a long history of expansion and contraction, and the recent and rapid spread of dry savannah habitats has influenced the spatial and temporal diversification of vertebrate taxa across this region. We used a combination of species tree and phylogeographic methods to describe the spatio-temporal changes through time and across space (= species diffusion) in a clade of seven West African lizard species in the Agama agama species group. A Bayesian species tree diffusion approach was used to compare the relative rates at which species ranges changed across the landscape. We found that some species have high diffusion rates characterized by significant movement in their range location and minor changes to their overall range size, whereas other species show little movement in their range centre with an exponential increase in range size. This discrepancy between the rates that range locations shift versus change in their relative area could be linked to populations tracking their preferred habitats through time. A continuous Bayesian phylogeography approach using a relaxed random walk model was used to estimate the timing and rate of population size change and geographic diffusion in A. picticauda, the single species in the group with an extensive African distribution from Mauritania to Ethiopia. The mean dispersal rate of A. picticauda increased dramatically throughout the Pleistocene, and a Bayesian skyride analysis supports exponential population growth over this same time period. A comparison of genetic diversity across different loci and species suggests that A. lebretoni experienced a mitochondrial selective sweep that has caused a deficit of variation at this locus in relation to nuclear loci.  相似文献

Tyrosine aminotransferase, induced by dexamethasone in the liver of the rainbow lizard, Agama agama, was extracted under optimal conditions which yield the native undegraded enzyme; purified by heat treatment at 65 degrees C, ammonium sulfate precipitation, chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel and Sephadex G-150-120 and then characterized. The enzyme was purified over 2000-fold to a specific activity of 2653 units/mg of protein. It had an optimum pH of 7.6 in potassium phosphate buffer, KmTyr: 1.0 mM; K alpha-KGm: 0.32 mM; Vmax: 1.33 nmol/min and a molecular weight of about 130,000. It was inhibited by L-glutamate (competitively, Ki, 2.5 mM), and by metal ions Ca2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Hg2+ and Ag2+, but was unaffected by chelating agents and other divalent cations. Lizard hepatic cytosolic tyrosine aminotransferase was specific for L-tyrosine and alpha-ketoglutarate as substrates sensitive to sulfhydryl inactivation and to protection from thermal lability by alpha-ketoglutarate and pyridoxal phosphate.  相似文献

Hydroxyapatite column chromatography has been used to study some properties of the extensively sheared DNA of the Rainbow lizard, Agama agama agama. Reassociation studies show that the genome has a Cot1/2 of 370. Approximately 15% of the genome is highly repetitive in nature. This repetitive fraction is resolved into thermally stable and less stable fractions. The stable fraction has a base composition of 47% GC, higher than the 40.2% GC for the native DNA. This stable fraction is believed to be of recent origin.Chromatography of the total DNA of the lizard with linear gradients of phosphate buffer containing 1 M urea resolves it into two components which were shown by thermal fractionation, also in the presence of 1 M urea, to vary in base composition. This behaviour may be characteristic of reptilian genomes and may be used as a basis for studying the structural organisation of the reptilian genome.  相似文献

The degeneration of axon terminals in the small-celled part of the mediodorsal cortex (sMDC) of the lizard Agama agama has been studied after lesions in the dorsal cortex at various survival periods. The Fink-Heimer stain was used to map and demonstrate terminal degeneration with the light and electron microscope. Electron microscopy was used to identify and describe degenerating boutons ultrastructurally. One sham-operated and three unoperated animals served as controls. Between 6 and 21 days postsurgically, degenerating terminals can be seen through 80% of the superficial plexiform layer, the zone adjacent to the cellular layer remaining free of degeneration. Swelling of dendrites in the outer part of the superficial plexiform layer and increased numbers of vacuolar invaginations, both present at short (24 hr–6 days; peak at 48–54 hr) survival periods, can be regarded as reaction to the surgical trauma. Degeneration of axon terminals takes three forms, all of the electron-dense type: gray boutons, degenerating bouton-dendritic spine complexes surrounded or engulfed by glia, and degeneration debris inside glial processes. Several forms of terminal degeneration occur concomitantly at any short (3–12 days) survival time. At longer survival times (15–21 days) only debris is present. From 6 days on, considerable numbers of degenerating structures are present, but the majority of degenerating boutons and debris are associated with reactive glia rather than with dendrites. From these observations it is concluded that in this lizard application of the combined degeneration-Golgi-EM technique would probably lead to little success. Electron microscopy of Fink-Heimer-stained sections suggests that degenerating bouton-dendritic spine complexes and degeneration debris accumulate silver particles, whereas gray boutons do not.  相似文献

The distribution of the Hardun, Agama stellio, the Caucasian Agama, Agama caucasia, the Syrian Agama, Agama ruderata, and Phrynocephalus helioscopus, in Turkey is presented with dot maps A. stellio and A. caucasia are sharply separated both horizontally and vertically. The area of A. stellio is defined by the March isotherm of 8°C and the July and August isotherms of 24°C. A. ruderata occurs in the large steppe areas of Inner and South-east Anatolia, but not in those of Eastern Anatolia.  相似文献

The kinematics of prey capture by Ascaphus truei was investigated. High-speed films (100 fps) of 13 successful and one unsuccessful prey capture sequences from six adult frogs were analysed. Ascaphus , the sister group of all living frogs, shares several aspects of feeding kinematics, including rotation of the tongue pad about the mandibular symphysis and mandibular bending during mouth opening and closing, with more derived frogs such as Bufo marinus. The times required for tongue retraction, mouth opening and closing are similar in Ascaphus and Bufo. However, because Bufo is much larger and protracts its tongue much farther than Ascaphus , the velocities of tongue retraction, mouth opening and mouth closing are relatively lower in Ascaphus than in Bufo. Differences in prey capture between Ascaphus and Bufo marinus are (1) the distance of tongue protraction is less in Ascaphus (±0.5 cm) than in Bufo (c. 2 cm); and (2) lunging of the whole body is more pronounced in Ascaphus. Prey capture is highly variable in Ascaphus. An intraoral transport sequence is sometimes (7 of 14 observations) inserted into the prey capture cycle before the completion of mouth closing. The gape cycles range from 80–150 ms for sequences with no oral transport and from 130–280 ms for sequences with oral transport. Also, the time required for tongue retraction is significantly longer in the unsuccessful capture attempt. This variability is generally greater than that observed during prey capture in salamanders, and suggests that frogs and salamanders may differ in the importance of sensory feedback in coordinating prey capture.  相似文献

The utilization of a diet rich in plant cell walls was studied in a large, desert-dwelling, herbivorous lizard, Uromastyx aegyptius (Agamidae). The diet eaten by U. aegyptius in spring in the 'Arava Valley, Israel, consisted almost entirely of leaves and fruits of short-lived annual plant species. The leaves contained only moderate levels of fibre compared with grasses and tree leaves, but those fruits eaten were markedly higher in fibre and lignin. All items had notably high contents of ash.
Following oral doses of [14C] cellulose, 14CO2 was detected in respired air from U. aegyptius , demonstrating that the cellulose was digested and that the lizards gained oxidative energy from cellulose degradation. The hind gut was the principal site of microbial activity and the apparent digestibility of the cell-wall fraction was 69%. Similarly, the caecum/proximal colon had the highest concentrations of SCFA (76–120 mM).
The mean rate of SCFA production at 40 C in vitro was 31 mmol/1 h-1. Assuming that this is representative of daily production rate, 69 kJ/kg d-1 would be made available to the animal. This is 47% of the mean digestible energy intake estimated in free-living animals. Microbial fermentation contributes an important part of the energy budget of U. aegyptius but the effects of variation in body temperature on digestion and fermentation need further consideration.  相似文献

Eimeria sinaitae n. sp. is described from the gall bladder of Agama sinaita from Wasie, Saudi Arabia. Sporulated oocysts are elongate-ellipsoid 34.4 x 22.0 (29.0-40.0 x 17.4-24.5) micron. Oocyst wall is smooth, greenish yellow, 1.2 (1.0-1.4) micron thick, and two-layered. Micropyle, polar granule, and oocyst residuum are absent. Sporocysts are ellipsoid 11.4 x 7.6 (9.8-15.0 x 6.7-9.0) micron. Sporocyst residuum is present. The sporocysts lack a Stieda body. Sporozoites are crescent-shaped, blunt at one end and tapered at the other. Eimeria species from Agamidae are compared.  相似文献

The spleen of Agama stellio is composed mainly of red pulp; the white pulp is poorly developed, and its clusters are scattered throughout the organ and contain lymphocytes, reticular cells, and some plasma cells. The red pulp consists of clear reticular cells intermingled with blood cells, sinusoids, and pigment cells. The spleen of Chalcides ocellatus is encapsulated by connective tissue and is composed of white and red pulp. The white pulp consists of lymphoid tissue that surrounds the central arterioles, forming the periarteriolar lymphocyte sheath (PALS). The red pulp is composed of a system of venous sinuses and cords. The results of various histochemical procedures designed to demonstrate mucosubstances, proteins, and nucleic acids indicate that the spleen in these species resembles the mammalian spleen. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Predictive potential distribution modeling is of increasing importance in modern herpetological studies and determination of environmental and conservation priorities. In this article we provided results of analysis and forecasts of the potential distribution of smallscaled rock agama Paralaudakia microlepis (Blanford, 1874) using the distribution models through Maxent (www.cs.princeton.edu/- schapire / maxent). We made an attempt for comparison of input of bioclimatic factors and characteristics of biotope distribution for three species of genus Paralaudalda. Constructed model identified dissemination of Paralaudakia microlepis enough performance (AUC = 0.972 with dispersion 0.003). According to the map constructed, the most suitable habitats of smallscaled rock agama Paralaudakia microlepis are located in southern and eastern Iran, the west of central Pakistan and southeastern Afghanistan.  相似文献
